RESOURCE AND EXPLOITATION STRATEGY OF RAW ARTIFACT STONE MATERIALS AT THE SHANG DYNASTY DAXINZHUANG SITE, JINAN

摘要: 石器生产是一个动态的生产系统,而石料是石器生产和研究的前提。通过对大辛庄遗址周围考古与地质调查和对出土商代石器标本的细致分析表明,该遗址商代石器原料使用种类丰富,石料的利用率与遗址周围石质类型分布有着极为密切的关系。原料分布广泛,具有高含量、低质量的特点,明显影响着当地石器工业的面貌和开发与利用自然的策略。大辛庄石料应当来源于当地,主要有两种途径:一种是就地取材;另一种主要来源于南部山区和鲍山一带,主要通过水路运输,陆路运输条件具备。在利用与开发石料的战略上,大辛庄人充分认识到石料特性,尤其对沉积岩的认识与利用,重视选材,考虑石器功能和使用方式,并很好地实施到石器制作过程中,制定相应的应对策略。通过对大辛庄商代石料来源地和开发策略的考察,有利于认识当时人地关系和大辛庄人认识自然、开发自然的认知水平。Abstract: The Daxinzhuang Site is located in the plain area around the Southern Mountains of the east suburb of Jinan city. It is a big archaeological site composed mainly of remains of the Shang Dynasty. Although its chronology and relationships with other cultures have been well-studied, its manufacture has been rarely investigated. We have tried to study the technology and use patterns of stone tools of the site, but the research on the stone tools is based mainly on analyzing raw materials of stone tools excavated from the site as well as a regional systematic archaeological and geological survey. In this paper, we have studied the resource and exploitation strategy of raw stone materials of this site.Statistic analysis of archaeological samples indicated that there were various material resources of stone tools at the Daxinzhuang Site. Of 12 kinds of raw stone materials, sandstone and dolomite were the majority and gabbro, schist, diorite, graystone, and quartzite followed, while the others were the least to be used. In generally speaking, the distribution area of raw stone materials was broad around the site. Of all, the distribution areas of dolomite, graystone, and sandstone were the broadest; those of gabbro and diorite were smaller while those of the others were the smallest. Evidence also indicated that the use ratio of different types of materials was clearly related to its distribution. In general, raw materials of stone tools from the Daxinzhuang Site were characterized by high quantity but low quality. This apparently influenced the feature of local stone industry and peoples strategy of exploiting and utilizing natural resources. Regional systematic archaeological and geological survey of the Hua Mountain, the Woniu Mountain to the Bao Mountain, the Lieshi Mountain, the Liuzhiyuan Mountain, and the Mashan Hill around the site indicated that raw stone materials of the Daxinzhuang Site were local. Around the site, sandstone distributes mainly in the west slope of the Bao Mountain; graystone and dolomite mainly around the Southern Mountains and the Bao Mountain; gabbro and diorite mainly in the Wuying Mountain of Jinan city and the Southern Mountains, and the others are rarely found in local place. As far as landform, transportation, and stone texture are considered, raw stone materials should be mainly from the Southern Mountains and the Bao Mountain. The transportation was supposed to include mainly waterway, although landway existed too.Evidence also shows that stone tool makers in Daxinzhuang knew characteristics of stone materials, especially sedimentary stones well and used them widely and efficiently in stone tool manufacture. They have developed capability of using different kinds of raw stone materials to make different patterns of stone tools.
