Based on the data of the four representative sites during 1971－2007,the thunderstorm climatic characteristics of the Urumqi region were statistically analyzed, The results showed that thunderstorm days were more in mountain areas than in Urban and Dabancheng areas, the days of thunderstorm were gradually decreased since 37 years, the regional thunderstorm activity average period happened in Apr. to Sep., and the most was in Jul., they mainly occurred from 14:00 to 2:00 during the day and the most of them with the duration of less than 30 minutes The least activities of thunderstorm were in northerly direction, and the longest duration happened in mountain areas. This studying provides reference for lightning protection and disaster reduction in local area in future.
