Abstract:Winter monsoon indices defined before 2009 were counted and classified in this paper. They were classified into 5 classes, including land-sea contrast(4 cases), characteristics of high pressure(3 cases), characteristics of wind field(9 cases), characteristics of circulation(4 cases), and integrated characteristics of winter monsoon system(2 cases). Then yearly and decadal variation and periodic variation of these indices were analyzed. We also discussed the correlation between these indices and the correlation between winter indices and winter temperature in China. The results show that the east Asian winter monsoon are weakening mainly with a quasi 6 a, 11 a, and 17 a periodic oscillations, so that the weakening tends to slow down. The correlations of indices in the same class are better than that in different classes. Areas, in which good correlation between East Asian winter monsoon index and winter temperature exists, belong to the Loop and central Inner Mongolia, south China, southeast coast of China, the Sichuan Basin and so on.
