Abstract: Based on exploring the evolution of understanding and utilizing ways of natural resources and geoheritage site management, this paper describes in detail the history of geopark, which is divided into four stages, i.e., ① budding stage, ② National/European Geopark, ③ Global Geopark and ④ UNESCO Global Geopark. These stages, each with its own characteristics, reflect the progress of humankind’s understanding, protecting and utilizing natural resources. The modern geopark philosophy and related geoheritage protection, utilization and development model are suitable for our present society, and hence have a bright future. This paper will provide useful information for geopark managers, researchers and local authorities.
