A model is developed for predicting the settling velocity in suspensions of particles of two different sizes based on experimental data for the settling rate of two-size suspensions in various liquids using particles of equal density. In these experiments, the retarding effect of the smaller particles on the settling velocities of the larger ones is taken into account. The model considers Steinour’s fundamental equation and assumes a fixed arrangement of particles and constant velocity in a single-size susp...  相似文献

Non-uniform sediment incipient velocity   总被引:5,自引:3,他引:2
Based on the mechanism of non-uniform sediment incipient motion, the dragging force and uplift force coefficient expressions are put forward for the non-uniform bed material exposure and close alignment state. The incipient velocity formula of the non-uniform sediment is then established. It is shown that the formula structure is reasonable, and fine particles of the non-uniform sediment are more difficult to set into motion than the same sized uniform particles, whereas coarser particles are easier to set into motion than their uniform equivalents. The validity of the formula is verified by field and experiment data.  相似文献

The use of predictive models for the understanding and management of sediment and contaminant transport generally requires knowledge of particle size and settling velocity. Particle size is often obtained by direct measurements, and the settling velocities are usually predicted using the Stokes' law (or a modification thereof) for single‐grained spherical particles. Such measurements and estimates are not satisfactory measures for cohesive sediments, which exist as agglomerated particles called flocs and whose behaviour is significantly different from that of the single‐grained particles. Direct measurement of settling velocity and size using optical methods in settling columns has also been employed to improve these predictions; however, the subjectivity in determining which particles are in focus results in unreliable size data. An out‐of‐focus particle will generally possess a larger size than in reality. This paper evaluates a laser‐assisted particle sizing/settling velocity determination technique's ability to eliminate the subjectivity and improve particle‐sizing accuracy during settling column experiments. Although the diffraction of light by the translucent standard beads (used for evaluating the technique's accuracy for determining particle size) posed a problem, the results suggest that this technique has potential for assisting researchers to obtain the most accurate settling particle size data possible. Experiments on initiation of motion of different fractions of non-uniform sediment mixtures are reported. Four sediment mixes and reference transport method to define the threshold of bed particle movement are used in this analysis. Factors controlling the initiation of motion are analyzed. It is found that relative size of different grains with respect to a median size greatly affects the initiation of movement. The incipient motion of non-uniform sediment is very much dependent on the absolute size for coarser fractions. Considering the factors controlling the initiation of motion the experimental data sets along with the other available data yield a new relationship for the calculation of critical shear stress of non-uniform sediments. A set of equations have found that all the data points fall into a single line for the finer and for coarser fractions.  相似文献

Sheet flow hydrodynamics over a non-uniform sand bed channel   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The current study experimentally investigates the flow characteristics and temporal variations in the sheet flow profile of a non-uniform sand bed channel. Experiments were done to explore turbulent structures in the presence of a sheet flow layer with and without seepage. The turbulent events, such as stream wise velocity, Reynolds shear stresses, and turbulence intensities were found to be increasing and vertical velocity was found decreasing with a sheet layer. The presence of a sheet layer also effects the turbulent energy production and energy dissipation. All the turbulence parameters with and without a sheet layer have also been influenced by the presence of downward seepage. The rate of sheet flow movement is increased with seepage, owing to increased turbulence with seepage. The current study used wavelet analysis on temporally lagged spatial bed elevation profiles obtained from a set of laboratory experiments and synchronized the wavelet coefficients with bed elevation fluctuation at different spatial scales. A spatial cross correlation analysis at multiple scales, based on the wavelet coefficients, has been done on these bed elevation datasets to observe the effect of downward seepage on the dynamic behavior of sheet flow at different length scales. It is found that seepage increases average bed celerity and also increases the celerity of sheet flow of similar length scales. This increase in the celerity has been hypothesized as the increase of sheet flow movement as well as the increase in turbulent parameters with seepage, which destabilizes the bed particles resulting in a disruption in the continuous propagation pattern of the sheet flow. The increase of sheet flow celerity with seepage is confirmed from the saturation level of the wavelet power spectra of the bed elevation series. The presence of seepage also affects the non-uniformity of collective sheet material.  相似文献

When fine particles are involved, cohesive properties of sediment can result in flocculation and significantly complicate sediment process studies. We combine data from field observations and state-of-the-art modeling to investigate and predict flocculation processes within a hypertidal estuary. The study site is the Welsh Channel located at the entrance of the Dee Estuary in Liverpool Bay. Field data consist of measurements from a fixed site deployment during 12–22 February 2008. Grain size, suspended sediment volume concentration, and current velocity were obtained hourly from moored instruments at 1.5 m above bed. Near-bottom water samples taken every hour from a research vessel are used to convert volume concentrations to mass concentrations for the moored measurements. We use the hydrodynamic model Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS) coupled with the turbulence model General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM) and a sediment module to obtain three-dimensional distributions of suspended particulate matter (SPM). Flocculation is identified by changes in grain size. Small flocs were found during flood and ebb periods—and correlate with strong currents—due to breakup, while coarse flocs were present during slack waters because of aggregation. A fractal number of 2.4 is found for the study site. Turbulent stresses and particle settling velocities are estimated and are found to be related via an exponential function. The result is a simple semiempirical formulation for the fall velocity of the particles solely depending on turbulent stresses. The formula is implemented in the full three-dimensional model to represent changes in particle size due to flocculation processes. Predictions from the model are in agreement with observations for both settling velocity and SPM. The SPM fortnight variability was reproduced by the model and the concentration peaks are almost in phase with those from field data.  相似文献

Sediment particles are often colonized by biofilm in a natural aquatic ecological system, especially in eutrophic water body. A series of laboratory experiments on particle size gradation, drag coefficient and settling velocity were conducted after natural sediment was colonized by biofilm for 5, 10, 15 and 20 days. Particle image acquisition, particle tracking techniques of Particle Image Velocimetry and Particle Tracking Velocimetry were utilized to analyze the changes of these properties. The experimental results indicate that the size gradation, the drag force exerted on bio-particles, and the settling velocity of bio-particles underwent significant change due to the growth of biofilm onto the sediment surface. The study proposes a characteristic particle size formula and a bio-particle settling velocity formula based on the regression of experiment results, that the settling velocity is only 50% to 60% as the single particle which has the same diameter and density. However, biofilm growth causes large particle which the settling velocities are approximately 10 times larger than that of primary particles. These results may be specifically used in the low energy reservoir or lake environment.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were performed with rain of uniform drop size (2·7 mm, 5·1 mm) impacting flows over non‐cohesive beds of uniform sized sand (0·11–0·9 mm) and coal (0·2–0·9 mm) particles with flow velocities (20 mm s?1, 40 mm s?1) that were insufficient for the flow to entrain the particles without the aid of raindrop impact. Measurement of particle travel distance under rain made up of 2·7 mm drops confirmed a theoretical relationship between settling velocity and the distance particles travel after being disturbed by drop impact. Although, in theory, a relationship between settling velocity and particle travel distance exists, settling velocity by itself was unable to account for the effect of changes in both particle size and density on sediment discharge from beds of uniform non‐cohesive material. Particle density was also a factor. Further study of how particle characteristics influence sediment discharge will aid modelling of the impact of the soil in process‐based models of erosion by rain‐impacted flow. Threshold criterion for debris flow initiation in seasonal gullies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A series of flume experiments were done to investigate the effect of grain composition on the critical gradient and discharge of debris flows initiated in seasonal gullies. The results indicated that the critical gradient and discharge for debris flow initiation decrease initially, and then increase as the mass content of fine particles (<2 mm) increases. As the mass content of fine particles increases, the angle of repose, permeability of widely graded gravel soils, and the incipient motion conditions of the coarse grains in non-uniform sediments decrease at first, and then increase. The mass content of fine particles of all inflection points is the same. The theoretical model based on the combination of hydrodynamic force and shear stress is more applicable to the prediction of the critical gradient for debris flow initiation. The critical discharge model considering the effect of non-homogeneity of the soil and the size of coarse and fine grains provides a more accurate prediction of debris flow initiation than other models based on the mean diameter.  相似文献

The current research deals with the dispersion of fine settling particles in a fluid flowing through an icecovered channel under the laminar flow condition. An analytical solution of the two-dimensional convection-diffusion equation, based on the multi-scale homogenization technique, is obtained. To validate the current study, analytical results for the dispersion coefficient are compared with the available earlier research work. Moreover, the proposed analytical solutions for mean concentration...  相似文献

Experimental data, obtained from previous studies,on Critical Tractive Stress(CTS) of non-uniform sediments, have been used to verify the adequacy of existing relationships for CTS of non-uniform bimodal sediments.Keeping in view the performance of such relationships,a new relationship for computation of dimensionless CTS of individual size fraction of non-uniform unimodal and bimodal sediments has been proposed in the form of power law.The coefficient and exponent of the proposed power law have been empirically correlated with sediment characteristics for available sediment data. The proposed relationship has been validated with independent flume and field data to assess their applicability for unimodal and bimodal sediments.  相似文献

The study of the fall velocity variation of fine sediment in estuarine areas plays an important role in determining how various factors affect the flocculation process.Previous experimental studies have focused solely on the relation between the median fall velocity and influencing factors, while in the current study, the variation of the fall velocity in quiescent water also was examined. The experimental results showed that the vertical distribution of sediment concentration was more uneven, and larger variations occurred earlier during the settling process under higher salinity and/or sediment concentration conditions. The fall velocity initially increased then decreased over time, peaking at~20 min after settling began, and stabilizing at a value similar to that in freshwater, regardless of the initial sediment concentration and salinity combinations.Along the water depth, the fall velocity increased monotonically with a gradually decreasing gradient. The median fall velocity increased then decreased with increased salinity. The salinity at which the peak fall velocity occurred depended on the initial sediment concentration. The relation between the median fall velocity and initial sediment concentration displayed an obvious two-stage pattern(i.e.,accelerated flocculation and decelerated, hindered settling) at higher salinities;whereas the maximum median fall velocity was observed at two consecutive sediment concentration values under lower salinity conditions. Finally,an empirical equation estimating the median fall velocity of cohesive fine sediment was formulated, incorporating the effects of both salinity and sediment concentration.  相似文献

Bed topography and grain size are predicted for steady, uniform flow in circular bends by consideration of the balance of fluid, gravity and frictional forces acting on bed load particles. Uniform flow pattern is adequately described by conventional hydraulic equations, with bed shear defined as that effectively acting on bed load grains. This analysis is used as a basis to predict bed topography and grain size for steady, non-uniform flow in non-circular bends (represented by a ‘sine-generated’ curve). The non-uniform flow pattern is calculated using the method of Engelund (1974a). Equilibrium bed form, hence sedimentary structure, is found by comparison of existing flow conditions with one of the schemes describing the hydraulic stability limits of the various bed forms. The model was compared with bankfull flow observations from a channel bend on the River South Esk, Scotland. Theoretical bed topography and velocity distribution were very close to the observed data. However, bed shear stress showed only a broad agreement, probably because of the use a constant friction coefficient value. Mean grain size distribution showed good agreement, but theory did not account adequately for gravel sizes in the talweg region and on the upstream, inner part of the bar, possibly due to theoretical underestimation of effective bed shear. Bed form and sedimentary structure are predicted well using the familiar stream power-grain size scheme. The behaviour of the model under unsteady uniform flow conditions in circular bends was analyzed, and suggests that any variation of grain size and bed topography with stage is likely to be limited to deeper parts of the channel.  相似文献

The aerodynamic behaviour of volcanic aggregates   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A large proportion of solid material transported within the atmosphere during volcanic eruptions consists of particles less than 500 m in diameter. The majority of these particles become incorporated into a wide range of aggregate types, the aerodynamic behaviour of which has not been determined by either direct observation or in the laboratory. In the absence of such data, theoretical models of fallout from volcanic plumes make necessarily crude assumptions about aggregate densities and fall velocities. Larger volcanic ejecta often consists of pumice of lower than bulk density. Experimental data are presented for the fall velocities of porous aggregates and single particles, determined in systems analogous to that of ejecta falling from a volcanic plume. It is demonstrated that the fall of aggregates may be modelled in identical fashion to single particles by using a reduced aggregate density dependent on the porosity, and a size corresponding to an enclosing sphere. Particles incorporated into aggregates attain a substantially higher fall velocity than single particles. This is due to the larger physical dimensions of the aggregate, which overcomes the effect of lower aggregate density. Additionally, the internal porosity of the aggregate allows some flow of fluid through the aggregate and this results in a small increase in fall velocity. The increase in fall velocity of particles incorporated into aggregates, rather than falling individually, results in the enhanced removal of fine material from volcanic plumes.  相似文献

Both the floc formation and floc breakup of cohesive sediment are affected by turbulent shear which is recognized as one of the most important parameters, and thus, on the settling and transport of cohesive sediment. In this study, the development of floc characteristics at early stage and steady-state of flocculation were investigated via a three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann numerical model for turbulence-induced flocculation. Simulations for collision and aggregation of various size particles, floc growth, and breakup in isotropic and homogenous turbulent flows with different shear stresses were conducted. Model results for the temporal evolution of floc size distribution show that the normalized floc size distributions is time-independent during early stage of flocculation, and at steady-state, shear rate has no effect on the shape of normalized floc size distribution. Furthermore, the size, settling velocity, and effective density of flocs at the non-equilibrium flocculation stage do not change significantly for shear stresses in the range 0–0.4 N m?2. The relationships between floc size and settling velocity established during floc growth stages and that during steady-states are different.  相似文献

In this work a new expression has been developed to predict the settling velocity of a sediment particle which is dispersed in a sediment-fluid mixture during a turbulent flow. A concept of apparent particle diameter has been introduced and is defined by the diameter of the spherical volume in which the particle can move randomly after collision with other particles in suspension. The effect of suspension concentration is studied on the mass density of the sediment-fluid mixture. It has been shown that the settling velocity of sediment particle in a sediment-fluid mixture is a function of different characteristics of the sediment particle such as settling velocity in clear fluid, suspension concentration, relative mass density and Reynolds number. The model has shown good agreement when compared with previously published experimental data and it’s prediction accuracy is superior than the other existing models.  相似文献

This study investigates turbulence structures in steady and non-uniform flows. Equations of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent velocity fluctuations are derived and their physical interpretations are explained. The theoretical results show that, different from previous studies, the variation of water surface can generate the wall-normal velocity, resulting in deviations of Reynolds shear stress and turbulence intensities from those in uniform flows. A self-similarity relationship is found between the Reynolds shear stress and turbulence intensities in non-uniform flows. The existence of self-similarity indicates that the effect of non-uniformity does not influence the mixing length. An empirical equation has been proposed to express the relationship based on experimental data available in the literature. Good agreement is achieved between the measured and predicted turbulence intensities by applying the self-similarity relationship.  相似文献

The results of a simple computational model for differential settling are presented illustrating the significant role that particle size distribution plays in collision frequency and sedimentation rate of particles in a quiescent environment. The model tracks a large number of particles(order 10~5) with log-normally distributed diameters,as they settle at their Stokes settling velocities.Particle collisions are detected and result in larger particles that fall more rapidly.A number of simplifying assumptions are made in the model in order to avoid empirical correlations for phenomena such as collision efficiency and particle shape. These simplifying assumptions were needed to isolate and quantify the role of the particle size distribution.Simulated concentration profiles indicate that, even in the absence of collisions, the standard deviation(σ_D) of the particle size strongly influences the bulk mass settling rate as,for largerσ_D, more mass is concentrated in larger, faster falling particles. The collision frequency is also a strong function ofσ_D. For a given mass concentration the collision frequency first increases linearly with increasingσ_D as greater variation in particle size leads to greater variation in particle velocity, and shorter times for particles to catch each other. For largerσ_D more mass is concentrated in larger particles,so,for a given mass concentration, there are fewer particles per unit volume, increasing the mean distance between the particles and reducing the collision frequency. The implications of these results for sedimentation measurement using optical attenuation techniques are discussed.  相似文献
