Abstract

Various interactions between small numbers (two and four) of baroclinic, geostrophic point vortices in a two-layer system are studied with attention to the qualitative changes in behavior which occur as size of the deformation radius is varied.

A particularly interesting interaction, which illustrates the richness of baroclinic vortex dynamics, is a collision between two hetons. (A heton is a vortex pair in which the constituent vortices have opposite signs and are in opposite layers. The “breadth” of a heton is the distance between its constituent vortices. A translating heton transports heat.) When two hetons, which initially have different breadths, collide, the result is either an exchange of partners, or a “slip-through” collision in which the initial structures are preserved. It is shown here that the outcome is always an exchange, provided the deformation radius is sufficiently small. This strongly contrasts with a collision between pairs of classical, one-layer vortices in which no exchange occurs if the initial ratio of the breadths is sufficiently extreme.

Finally the transport of passive fluid by a translating baroclinic pair is investigated. A pair of vortices in the top layer transports no lower layer fluid if the distance between the vortices is less than 1.72 deformation radii. By contrast, the size of the region trapped by a heton increases without bound as the spacing between the vortices increases.  相似文献

The principles for ray-tracing and wavefront curvature calculations in a three-dimensional medium are reviewed. A new derivation of the transformation of the wavefront curvature matrix at an interface between two inhomogeneous media is given. The derivation is based on a Taylor series expansion of the ray refraction equation at the interface between two inhomogeneous media, and only elementary geometric arguments are used. The wave-front curvature transformation at the interface is obtained by neglecting all terms in the direction of the surface normal. With proper definition of the variables, the derivation is also valid for a reflected wave-front. A simplified transformation rule is derived for a reflected wave of the same type as the incident wave.  相似文献

The idea of an over-threshold sampling is to retain all the events of a time-series exceeding a given threshold. The probabilistic analysis implies estimating two statistical models, one describing the occurrence of the events (date of the events), the other describing their magnitude (value of the local maximum). These two models are then combined to obtain the distribution of the annual maxima. A well-known result of a Poisson process is that waiting time, defined as the duration between two successive events exceeding the threshold, is exponentially distributed. The assertion that the waiting time of a Negative Binomial process is also exponentially distributed seems to be in obvious contradiction with the Poisson process properties. A theoretical discussion and Monte-Carlo simulations are presented to solve this apparent paradox.  相似文献

A wide range of rock magnetic properties have been determined from two collections of mid-Cretaceous basalts; one from Israel, the other from the Rajmahal traps in northeast India. Deuteric oxidation is rare in both collections, with titanium-rich titanomagnetite being the principal remanence carrier in most cases. There are a number of differences in rock magnetic properties between the two groups. Some of these seem to be primary, whereas others appear to be caused by hydrothermal alteration and weathering, which are more prevalent in the Indian rocks. These rocks are being used in palaeointensity experiments, from which it is hoped to determine the strength of the Earth's magnetic field during the long period of normal polarity in the mid-Cretaceous. Thellier palaeointensity experiments have been performed on two samples from each site. The degree of agreement between the two results is highly variable. The low blocking temperatures and the presence of secondary viscous components in many samples make Thellier palaeointensity experiments very difficult. A further problem is that of thermal alteration, two main types of which are observed. The first manifests itself as a large and sudden increase in partial thermoremanent magnetization (pTRM) capacity, and the second as a steady decrease in the size of pTRM with increasing temperature.  相似文献

A new mesh size field is presented that is specifically designed for efficient meshing of highly irregular oceanic domains: archipelagos. The new approach is based on the standard mesh size field that uses the proximity to the nearest coastline. Here, the proximities to the two nearest coastlines are used to calculate the distance between two islands or the width of a strait through an archipelago. The local value of the mesh size field is taken as the width (or distance between two islands) divided by the number of required elements across the strait (or between the islands). This new mesh size fields are illustrated for three examples: (1) the Aegean Sea, (2) the Indonesian Archipelago, and (3) the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.  相似文献

A combined application of two independent direct current geoelectric methods, potential gradient mapping (PM) and magnetometric resistivity (MMR), is proposed for the investigation of high-resistivity basement structures. From a one-dimensional relation between horizontal electric and magnetic fields (due to currents originating from point electrodes placed on the surface of a two-layered half-space having a high-resistivity basement) several advantages of the combined PM-MMR method are shown for two-dimensional and three-dimensional basement structures. Three-dimensional models have been studied by analogue modeling experiments. This new mapping method embraces two parameters: the horizontal electric conductance map, derived from the ratio of the related electric and magnetic components, and the gradient map of their product. A close relation between structural forms and anomaly maps is obtained by using two orthogonal source-electrode layouts. Based on model results a two-channel measuring instrument was developed. The method and the instrument were tested near Sopron where a gradual deepening of, and faults in, the Paleozoic basement were found.  相似文献

本文介绍如何利用GRACE两颗卫星之间K波段双频微波精密测距和轨道数据,得到星间平均电子密度.发展了一种将连续轨道电子密度极小对齐到零的方法,以消除整周模糊度;借助CHAMP卫星朗缪探针测量得到的轨道电子密度基值以及GPS掩星数据计算的等离子体垂直梯度标高,进一步修正了GRACE星间电子密度所固有的偏差;从而得到大约500 km高度上长达近十年的全球电子密度数据.为了检验消除偏差后GRACE星间电子密度数据的可靠性,对比了GRACE卫星过Millstone Hill雷达上空时,非相干散射雷达观测到的大致同时和相近位置的电子密度数据,结果显示,二者之间的线性相关系数为0.97,平均偏差为-7.26%,GRACE星间电子密度总体稍微偏低,偏差的标准差为18.6%.为进一步验证本文方法所得数据的可用价值,利用消除偏差后的电子密度数据,对GRACE卫星与CHAMP卫星在近乎相同的地方时而高度不同的近圆极轨道上飞行的情况下,两颗卫星观测到的电子密度随经度和纬度的全球分布进行了对比分析.多方面的对比检验证明,本文方法得到的几乎连续10年的GRACE高度上全球电子密度数据基本可靠,为电离层气候学与天气学研究提供了宝贵资料.  相似文献

A 1.5-dimensional, 1.5-layer shallow water model and an ensemble Kalman filter are used to evaluate the feasibility of estimating friction parameters and determining friction laws of oceanic gravity currents. The two friction laws implemented are a linear Rayleigh friction and a quadratic drag law. We demonstrate that the assimilation procedure rapidly estimates the total frictional force, whereas the distinction between the two laws is evolving on a slower time scale. We also demonstrate that parameter estimation can, in this way, choose between different parametrisations and help to discriminate between physical laws of nature by estimating the coefficients presented in such parametrisations.  相似文献

The phenomenon of reflection and transmission of plane harmonic waves at the plane interface between two dissimilar poroelastic solids saturated with two immiscible viscous fluids is investigated. Both porous media are considered dissipative due to the presence of viscosity in pore‐fluids. Four attenuated (three dilatational and one shear) waves propagate in such a dissipative porous medium. A finite non‐dimensional parameter is used to define the effective connections between the surface‐pores of two media at their common interface. Another finite parameter represents the gas‐share in the saturation of pores. An attenuated wave in a dissipative medium is described through the specification of directions of propagation and maximum attenuation. A general representation of an attenuated wave is defined through its inhomogeneous propagation, i.e., different directions for propagation and attenuation. Incidence of an inhomogeneous wave is considered at the interface between two dissipative porous solids. This results in four reflected and four transmitted inhomogeneous waves. Expressions are derived for the partition of incident energy among the reflected and transmitted waves. Numerical examples are studied to determine the effects of saturating pore fluid, frequency, surface‐pore connections and wave inhomogeneity on the strengths of reflected and transmitted waves. Interaction energy due to the interference of different (inhomogeneous) waves is calculated in both the dissipative porous media to verify the conservation of incident energy.  相似文献

Behavior of the Dar-Zarrouk parameters--longitudinal unit conductance, transverse unit resistance, longitudinal resistivity, and transverse resistivity--has been compared with the behavior of the natural recharge in two geological terrains. Contour patterns of the geophysical parameters and those of natural recharge have been analyzed and a qualitative relation in their behavior was recognized. Graphical comparison of the geophysical and hydrogeological parameters clearly illustrates a qualitative relationship between the two parameters. Use of such qualitative relation in the field of ground water exploration and management studies is explained. A modest beginning is attempted to arrive at a quantitative relation between natural recharge and Dar-Zarrouk parameters.  相似文献

近几年来,国家气候中心己经建立了中国主要四大流域气候对水资源影响评估的模式框架.本文拟进一步证明其中之一的两参数分布式月水量平衡水文模式对长江之上汉江和赣江两子流域径流的模拟能力,结果表明该水文模式对目前气候条件下径流模拟效果较好,运行稳定,可用于实时业务运行.在此基础上,利用ECHAM4和HadCM2两GCM(General Circulation Model)未来气候情景模拟结果及目前实测气候情况,对汉江和赣江两子流域的径流对未来气候变化的敏感性进行评估.经检验,两GCM对未来气候,特别是降水情景模拟存在一定差异,因此,造成径流对气候变化的响应不同,这充分反映了全球模式模拟结果不确定性在气候变化影响研究中的重要性.  相似文献

The analysis of Stoneley wave propagation in a fracture is essential for the identification and evaluation of fracture parameters from the borehole Stoneley wave. Also, it is important for many geophysics considerations, e.g. for tremor and long-period events observed in volcanoes and geothermal areas. In this paper, we investigate the guided waves propagation in a fluid layer lying between two viscoelastic vertically transversely isotropic media. The viscoelastic mechanism models the attenuation due to the presence of fluid saturation in the rock. A model based on the superposition of three inhomogeneous partial plane waves: one in the fluid and two heterogeneous waves in the solid is developed. The dispersion equation is obtained for this case. A numerical solution is carried out to obtain the guided wave velocity and attenuation coefficient. The results of this investigation show that there is a strong correlation between the velocity dispersion and attenuation of Stoneley wave and the anisotropic parameters of the medium especially in a sandstone (fast) medium.  相似文献

Parasite species have been widely used as fish host migration tag or as indicators of local pollution. In this paper our approach is to consider the entire parasite community as a biological indicator of the fish environmental conditions. Seven fish species belonging to the Apogonidae, Apogon bandanensis, A. cookii, A. doderleini, A. norfolkensis, A. trimaculatus, Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus and Fowleria variegata, were sampled on six stations in two bays (Grand-Rade and Sainte-Marie) around Nouméa (New-Caledonia). The two bays are submitted to urban wastewater inputs alone or combined with additional industrial inputs which influences decrease from the inner part to the entrance of each bay. A total of 592 fish were dissected for macro parasite examination. Parasites were grouped according to their taxonomical rank and development stage for the analysis. We found an inconsistent effect of the confinement between the two bays, revealing that the parasite community is not the same in the two bays. Moreover, the encysted metacercariae found in the pericardic cavity were found to be significant indicators of the specific anthropogenically impacted environmental conditions prevailing in the inner parts of the two bays. Other parasite taxa were found to be significant indicators of specific environmental conditions in one or two stations among the six sampled. Results on parasite specificity and biological life cycle of the parasite taxa found in sampled Apogonid were further compared with environmental parameters.  相似文献

A complex response algorithm for the dynamic analysis of axisymmetric thin shells supported on an interactive foundation is developed. The substructure deletion method is employed through the utilization of a dynamic boundary system at the contact area between the superstructure and the substructure. A new mathematical formulation in conjunction with the shell behaviour is developed to deal with rigid body motions due to the negation of the fixed base assumption. Four foundation conditions, that is, a fixed base, two pile foundation cases and a flexible base, are to examine the effect of base flexibility on the seismic response of cooling towers. Also, excellent comparative results between the frequency domain solution and a time domain solution are obtained.  相似文献

Oneapproach to the study of the distribution of the Earth's surface elevation is to look for the log normal curves that best fit the hypsographic curve.A new calculation of the parameters of the log normal curves, obtained using elevation data provided by the National Geophysical Data Center Boulder Co., is presented here.A anomalous flattening is observed for the ellipsoid which best fits the oceanic abyssal plain. The global shape of the oceanic floors seems to be less flattened than the geoid, with a marked asymmetry between the two hemispheres. There is a close correlation between the distribution of continents and the elevation of oceanic floors as a function of latitude.  相似文献
