Controversy exists over the spectral character of the class of magnetic pulsations designated Pi2. A novel method of spectral analysis, known as the maximum entropy method, is used to obtain power spectra of Pi2 pulsations with substantially improved resolution. Of the various theories presented for generating Pi2's, only that of Doobov and Mainstone (1973b) is in accord with our results.  相似文献

The Ap Sr(CrEu) star HD 75425 is shown to be pulsating with a 30- min period. This is unusually short for a δ Scuti star and about double the period of any known roAp star. The star is shown to be constant at the level of 0.35 mmag in the normal frequency regime of roAp pulsation (900≤ν≤ 2500 μHz). The pulsations in HD 75425 are modulated in amplitude, but the frequencies causing this modulation cannot be identified with the data in hand. HD 75425 is a very close visual double with an insecure Ap classification which needs to be reexamined. If the Ap classification of HD 75425 is correct, and the pulsations can be linked to the peculiar star, then this δ Scuti-like variability is of considerable interest. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Using magnetic data from the North American IMS network at high latitudes, Pi 3 pulsations are analysed for a period of 412 continuously-disturbed days. The data were obtained from 13 stations in the Alaska and Fort Churchill meridional chains and in the east-west chain along the auroral zone. In the past, Pi 3 pulsations associated with substorms have been classified into two sub-categories, Pi p and Ps 6. However, we find that Pi 3's which have longer periods than Pi p and which are different from Ps 6 are more commonly observed than these two special types. Power spectra, coherence and phase differences are compared among the stations. Results show that noticeable differences for latitudinal dependence of period and amplitude exist among midnight, morning and late-evening Pi 3 pulsations. Results for Pi 3 occurring near midnight indicate that the periods at which the power spectral density is a maximum are longest, and the amplitude largest, near the center of the westward auroral electrojet. On the other hand, for Pi 3 pulsations occurring in the morning, the periods at which the power spectral density is a maximum are longest, and the amplitude largest, near the poleward edge of the westward electrojet. Furthermore, for Pi 3 pulsations occurring in the late evening, their periods are longer and their amplitudes larger near both the Harang discontinuity and the poleward edge of the westward electrojet than near its center. Correlations between pairs of adjoining stations are better in the polar cap than at auroral latitudes. It is also found from hodograms that the sense of polarization often varies from one station to another for the same event, and that the time duration in which the same rotational sense is maintained is shorter near midnight than in the morning and late evening. It is suggested that the source regions of the morning and late-evening Pi 3's lie on the electrojet boundaries; that is at the Harang discontinuity (in the evening) and at the poleward edge of the westward electrojet (in the morning and evening). The generation of midnight Pi 3 pulsations, centered at a location within the westward auroral electrojet appears to be associated directly with the generation of that electrojet.  相似文献

We report the results of a case study of two Pi 2 pulsations observed near the eastward electrojet by the Scandinavian Magnetometer Array. The power of the two Pi 2 pulsations, calculated using a standard Fast Fourier Transform method, peaks near the centre of the eastward electrojet. For both events there is a strong latitudinal gradient in the power poleward of the equatorward border of the electrojet. The sense of polarisation is predominantly clockwise at the northern stations and anticlockwise at the southern stations although the reversal from clockwise to anticlockwise does not occur at a constant latitude. For the first event the polarisation reversal occurs at higher latitudes in the western half of the array; for the second the polarisation reversal occurs at higher latitudes at the edges of the array. The polarisation reversal does not appear to be related to the location of the eastward electrojet. Equivalent current vectors of the Pi 2 pulsations, obtained by rotating the band pass filtered data through 90°, exhibit clear vortex structures in both events. The vortices change sense of direction at half the period of the Pi 2 pulsation. A simple model for the ionospheric electric field in accord with the field line resonance theory reconstructs the basic features of the observed Pi 2 equivalent current system. We thus conclude that Pi 2 signatures in the region of the eastward electrojet and far away from the auroral break-up region are governed by the field line resonance mechanism.  相似文献

Type Pi magnetic-field pulsation bursts were selected for which the associated aurorae were relatively simple and stable and occurred in the ionosphere between College and Fort Yukon in alaska. Power spectral-density traces for College and Fort Yukon HandD were computed and were studied relative to the aurora and to more complex events presented in earlier studies. The power spectral-density traces associated to simpler aurora were found to be consistent with the assumption of simpler 3-dimensional current systems as generators of the Pi waves. The spectra of associated precipitation pulsations had a peak near 10mHz in common with the magnetic field spectra in all events, and also near 3 mHz in one event. The precipitation pulsations at 3 and 10mHz may have enhanced the magnetic field spectra at those frequencies through modulation of the ionospheric resistance to the current.  相似文献

During the type IV burst on 24 April, 1985 we observed at 234 MHz an untypical, strong, nearly six hours lasting continuum emission incorporating several groups of broadband pulsations, zebra patterns, fiber bursts, and a new fine structure phenomenon. The power spectra of the groups of broadband pulsations reveal no simple structure. There is only one common periodic component between 0.3 s and 0.4 s. Slowly drifting chains of narrowband fiber bursts are described as a new fine structure by spectrograms and simultaneously recorded single frequency intensity profiles. A qualitative model of this new fine structure is suggested.  相似文献

It is assumed that the original impulse producing Pi-2 pulsations is generated in the ionosphere at the moment of a brightening of aurora. The electric field is known to decrease in the auroral arc almost by an order of magnitude. The electric impulse that appears will be transferred along magnetic field lines and reflected from the ionosphere of the opposite hemisphere, forming the standing Alfvén wave. The electric field impulse of 100 mVm is capable of causing magnetic field oscillations of order of 100 γ. Reflection of the Alfvén impulse from the ionosphere with horizontal inhomogeneities corresponding to different forms of auroras is studied. The following is found: (a) the resonance is possible only for harmonics with the rotating vector of polarization; (b) the resonance periods appear to depend essentially on the ionospheric conductivity; this may bring a significant error into determination of the magnetospheric plasma density from the pulsation periods; (c) the auroral zone exerts a screening influence on the pulsations excited at latitudes higher than the zone itself.  相似文献

Several models for pulsating type IV radio bursts are presented based on the assumption that the pulsations are the result of fluctuations in the synchrotron emission due to small variations in the magnetic field of the source. It is shown that a source that is optically thick at low frequencies due to synchrotron self-absorption exhibits pulsations that occur in two bands situated on either side of the spectral peak. The pulsations in the two bands are 180° out of phase and the band of pulsations at the higher frequencies is the more intense. In contrast, a synchrotron source that is optically thin at all frequencies and whose low frequency emission is suppressed due to the Razin effect develops only a single band of pulsations around the frequency of maximum emission. However, the flux density associated with the later model would be too small to explain the more intense pulsations that have been observed unless the source area is considerably larger than presently seems reasonable.  相似文献

A criterion for the occurrence of double-mode pulsations is derived from linear adiabatic coupling coefficients The criterion indicates that double-mode pulsations of classical Cepheids occur at a shorter period range than the observed one, and that the evolutionary mass models are preferable for the double-mode pulsations.  相似文献

Radio pulsations observed during the 11 April 2001 event at six single frequencies (237, 327, 408, 610, 1420, and 2695 MHz) by the Trieste radio-polarimeter with a time resolution 10 ms are analyzed. A wavelet analysis method as well as time delay and polarization measurements are used. Both methods reveal pulsations with a period of about 0.1 s at all observed frequencies. Furthermore, the 0.1 s pulsations drift toward higher and lower frequencies, starting at about 1420 MHz. The polarization of pulsations increases with frequency and time. The remarkable fact that the detected 0.1 s period of pulsations does not depend on frequency in a very broad frequency range is discussed in terms of existing models of pulsations.  相似文献

Using the decimetric (700–1500 MHz) radio spectrometer and the synchronous observational system with high temporal resolution at four frequencies (1420, 2130, 2840 and 4260 MHz) of Yunnan Observatory, two rare events were observed on 2001 June 24 and 1990 July 30. The former was a small radio burst exhibiting pulsations with short periods (about 29, 40 and 100 ms) in the impulsive phase. The latter was a large radio burst, which at 2840 MHz produced radio pulsations with period of about 30 ms. This paper focuses on pulsations with very short periods in the range of 29–40 ms. The mechanism of generation of such pulsations may be modulation of radio radiation by the periodic trains of whistler packets originating in unstable regions of the corona. Alternatively, these pulsations can be attributed to wave-wave non-linear interactions of electrostatic upper hybrid waves driven by beams of precipitating electrons in flaring loops.  相似文献

The disciplines of asteroseismology and extrasolar planet science overlap methodically in the branch of high‐precision photometric time series observations. Light curves are, amongst others, useful to measure intrinsic stellar variability due to oscillations, as well as to discover and characterize those extrasolar planets that transit in front of their host stars, periodically causing shallow dips in the observed brightness. Both fields ultimately derive fundamental parameters of stellar and planetary objects, allowing to study for example the physics of various classes of pulsating stars, or the variety of planetary systems, in the overall context of stellar and planetary system formation and evolution. Both methods typically also require extensive spectroscopic follow‐up to fully explore the dynamic characteristics of the processes under investigation. In particularly interesting cases, a combination of observed pulsations and signatures of a planet allows to characterize a system's components to a very high degree of completeness by combining complementary information. The planning of the relevant space missions has consequently converged with respect to science cases, where at the outset there was primarily a coincidence in instrumentation and techniques. Whether space‐ or ground‐based, a specific type of stellar pulsations can themselves be used in an innovative way to search for extrasolar planets. Results from this additional method at the interface of stellar pulsation studies and exoplanet hunts in a beyond‐mainstream area are presented (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Geomagnetic field research carried out at the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory over the past decade is reviewed. An important aspect of this research has been the study of geomagnetic field variations, with particular emphasis on ULF geomagnetic pulsations. Features of geomagnetic pulsations which are unique to low latitude locations have been investigated, such as the cavity mode nature of low latitude Pi 2 pulsations and the role played by ionosphericO + ions in the field line resonances responsible for Pc 3 pulsations. A theoretical model has been developed which is able to account for the observed relationships between geomagnetic pulsations and oscillations in the frequency of HF radio waves traversing ionospheric paths. Other facets of the research have been geomagnetic field modelling, aimed at improving the accuracy and resolution of regional geomagnetic field models, and the development of improved geomagnetic activity indices.  相似文献

In order to investigate Pc3-4 geomagnetic pulsations at very low and equatorial latitudes, L=1.0 to 1.2, we analyzed simultaneous geomagnetic data from Brazilian stations for 26 days during October-November 1994. The multitaper spectral method based on Fourier transform and singular value decomposition was used to obtain pulsation power spectra, polarization parameters and phase. Eighty-one (81) simultaneous highly polarized Pc3-4 events occurring mainly during daytime were selected for the study. The diurnal events showed enhancement in the polarized power density of about 3.2 times for pulsations observed at stations close to the magnetic equator in comparison to the more distant ones. The phase of pulsation observed at stations near the magnetic equator showed a delay of 48-62° in relation to the most distant one. The peculiarities shown by these Pc3-4 pulsations close to the dip equator are attributed to the increase of the ionospheric conductivity and the intensification of the equatorial electrojet during daytime that regulates the propagation of compressional waves generated in the foreshock region and transmitted to the magnetosphere and ionosphere at low latitudes. The source mechanism of these compressional Pc3-4 modes may be the compressional global mode or the trapped fast mode in the plasmasphere driving forced field line oscillations at very low and equatorial latitudes.  相似文献

Geomagnetic pulsations recorded on the ground are the signatures of the integrated signals from the magnetosphere. Pc3 geomagnetic pulsations are quasi-sinusoidal variations in the earth’s magnetic field in the period range 10–45 seconds. The magnitude of these pulsations ranges from fraction of a nT (nano Tesla) to several nT. These pulsations can be observed in a number of ways. However, the application of ground-based magnetometer arrays has proven to be one of the most successful methods of studying the spatial structure of hydromagnetic waves in the earth’s magnetosphere. The solar wind provides the energy for the earth’s magnetospheric processes. Pc3–5 geomagnetic pulsations can be generated either externally or internally with respect to the magnetosphere. The Pc3 studies undertaken in the past have been confined to middle and high latitudes. The spatial and temporal variations observed in Pc3 occurrence are of vital importance because they provide evidence which can be directly related to wave generation mechanisms both inside and external to the magnetosphere. At low latitudes (L < 3) wave energy predominates in the Pc3 band and the spatial characteristics of these pulsations have received little attention in the past. An array of four low latitude induction coil magnetometers were established in south-east Australia over a longitudinal range of 17 degrees at L = 1.8 to 2.7 for carrying out the study of the effect of the solar wind velocity on these pulsations. Digital dynamic spectra showing Pc3 pulsation activity over a period of about six months have been used to evaluate Pc3 pulsation occurrence. Pc3 occurrence probability at low latitudes has been found to be dominant for the solar wind velocity in the range 400–700 km/s. The results suggest that solar wind controls Pc3 occurrence through a mechanism in which Pc3 wave energy is convected through the magnetosheath and coupled to the standing oscillations of magnetospheric field lines.  相似文献

Spectral analysis of recent photometric observations has revealed the existence of narrow frequency band pulsations in the brightness of some auroras. Peaks in the power spectra, between 25 and 32 Hz have been observed. We suggest that these observations are associated with electrostatic ion cyclotron waves, which are excited when the relative drift between ions and electrons due to field aligned (Birkeland) currents, exceeds a certain critical value.  相似文献

The morphological features of Pc5 pulsations during a solar cycle are studied using Fort Churchill data for the years 1962–1972. Some of the characteristics noted are as follows: (1) Increasing sunspot numbers show little influence on the diurnal variation of the occurrence, amplitude and the period except perhaps some noticeable change in the absolute magnitude of these parameters during different hours of the day. (2) The morning occurrence peak dominates during all phases of the solar cycle. (3) As noted earlier (Gupta 1973a), with increasing magnetic activity the day side region(s) of generation of Pc5 is found to shift closer to the subsolar point and in the midnight sector, the occurrence region (presumably the region of open and closed field lines) seemed to shift towards earlier hours with increasing magnetic activity and towards later hours with increasing sunspot numbers. (4) Despite the smaller number of data points for high magnetic activity levels the analysis indicates that the amplitude of Pc5 pulsations is directly related to all the levels of magnetic activity. (5) The periods of Pc5 pulsations show strong correlation with increasing sunspot numbers and the amplitude and occurrences are found to vary in accordance with the magnetic activity all through the cycle. (6) The annual and semi-annual variations of Pc5 parameters have been demonstrated especially for the pulsations occurring in the morning close to 8 ± 1 h LT and for those occurring near the midnight hours. (7) A suspected 27-day recurrence tendency has been clearly noticed for the occurrence, amplitude and period of Pc5 pulsations.  相似文献

Measurements of the properties of Pi 2 pulsations along a magnetic meridian at high latitudes during a number of substorms have been analyzed for their relationship to the auroral electrojet. It is found that the maximum Pi 2 pulsation amplitudes are closely associated with the instantaneous position of the electrojet. That is, the average pulsation amplitude in the Pi 2 band as well as the amplitudes of pulsations at specific frequencies in the band have maximum amplitudes at latitudes close to the instantaneous electrojet location. Stations equatorward of the electrojet tend to observe a classical Pi 2 waveform concurrent with the onset of the substorm electrojet. Stations near the electrojet observe a broad spectrum of pulsations indicating a multiplicity of sources. Stations poleward of the initial electrojet position see little pulsation activity until the electrojet moves overhead. The appearance of large amplitude Pi 2 pulsations at a station which was poleward of the electrojet at the onset of a substorm appears to be coincident with the arrival of the poleward border of the electrojet.  相似文献

Pulsations with periods down to 0.05 s have been observed in continuum emission following flares. In pulsating events several frequencies may be excited, simultaneously or in time succession. Pulsations occur both in classical type IV events and in short-lasting continuum events. The power spectrum shows no large variation during one or two hours. Some implications of fast pulsations for the generation mechanism are discussed.Proceedings of the Workshop on Radio Continua during Solar Flares, held at Duino (Trieste), Italy, 27–31 May, 1985.  相似文献

An hypothesis on the interference origin of millisecond pulsations of solar-burst microwave radio emissions based on the fact that the signal scintillation appears as a result of radio-wave propagation through an inhomogeneous turbulent corona is considered. It is shown that the time profile of pulsations depends on the phase difference of interfering waves and can either look like pulses of “emission” and “absorption” or it can have a sawtooth form with slow buildup and fast drop. The observed properties of pulsations were compared with predictions of this model; this comparison showed that the formation of pulsations and their observed properties are satisfactorily explained by multipath propagation, which takes place at traversal of the coronal plasma by radio waves.  相似文献
