Using near-simultaneous full disk solar X-ray images and Hei 10830 spectroheliograms from three rocket flights, we compare dark points identified on the Hei maps with X-ray bright points identified on the X-ray images. We find that for the largest and most obvious features there is a strong correlation: most Hei dark points correspond to X-ray bright points. However, about two-thirds of the X-ray bright points were not identified on the basis of the helium data alone. Once an X-ray feature is identified it is almost always possible to find an underlying dark patch of enhanced Hei absorption which, however, would not a priori have been selected as a dark point. Therefore, the Hei dark points, using current selection criteria, cannot be used as a one-to-one proxy for the X-ray data. Hei dark points do, however, identify the locations of the stronger X-ray bright points.Visitor, National Solar Observatory. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have different applications in Astronomy, including data reduction and data mining. In this work we propose the use ANNs in the identification of stellar model solutions. We illustrate this method, by applying an ANN to the 0.8M star CG Cyg B. Our ANN was trained using 60,000 different 0.8M stellar models. With this approach we identify the models which reproduce CG Cyg B’s position in the HR diagram. We observe a correlation between the model’s initial metal and helium abundance which, in most cases, does not agree with a helium to metal enrichment ratio ΔYZ = 2. Moreover, we identify a correlation between the model’s initial helium/metal abundance and both its age and mixing-length parameter. Additionally, every model found has a mixing-length parameter below 1.3. This means that CG Cyg B’s mixing-length parameter is clearly smaller than the solar one. From this study we conclude that ANNs are well suited to deal with the degeneracy of model solutions of solar type stars.  相似文献

Several solar active regions were observed during the 1976 vernal equinox with the 3-element interferometer of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The element spacings for these observations were 600, 2100, and 2700 m, resulting in maximum angular resolutions of about 3 arc sec at 3.7 cm and 8.5 arc sec at 11.1 cm. We fitted the fringe visibility for each baseline pair as a function of projected baseline with a single gaussian component, and calculated the extrapolated flux at zero baseline, F 0, the FWHM source size, a, and the peak brightness temperature T b. In an effort to find local sources of the Slowly Varying Component (SVC), an analysis is made of the episodical observations carried out since 1972 during periods of low solar activity at 20 and 25 MHz. In contrast to other writers who reported on successful observations of such sources (Kundu et al., 1977; Sastry et al., 1981, 1983), we have not found local sources, though we used the UTR-2 radio telescope to observe from several to several tens brightness distributions of the quiet Sun per day.The multiple daily measurements allowed tracing the dynamics of the burst development. As has been found, bursts of high intensity can give rise to nonthermal radiation from the region of generation, thus producing a considerable increase in the maximum brightness temperature of scans across the Sun. The relaxation time of this process is 20 to 30 min. It is not improbable that this is the effect responsible for large variations in the maximum brightness temperatures of the scans that Sastry et al. (1981) connected with the SVC.25 MHz radioheliograms of April 29 and 30, 1976, are presented which supplement the data of observations at Clark Lake (Kundu et al., 1977). It is shown that the sources observed there on April 27 and April 29, 1976, were most likely of nonthermal nature.We conclude that at present, in spite of reports of some workers, there is no convincing evidence for the existence of local SVC sources at decameter wavelengths. We present statistics relating shock-associated (SA) kilometric bursts (Cane et al., 1981) to solar metric type II bursts. An SA burst is defined here to be any 1980 kHz emission temporally associated with a reported metric type II burst and not temporally associated with a reported metric type III burst. In this way we extend to lower flux densities and shorter durations the original SA concept of Cane et al. About one quarter of 316 metric type II bursts were not accompanied by any 1980 kHz emission, another quarter were accompanied by emission attributable to preceding or simultaneous type III bursts, and nearly half were associated with SA bursts. We have compared the time profiles of 32 SA bursts with Culgoora Observatory dynamic spectral records of metric type II bursts and find that the SA emission is associated with the most intense and structured part of the metric type II burst. On the other hand, the generally poor correlation found between SA burst profiles and Sagamore Hill Observatory 606 and 2695 MHz flux density profiles suggests that most SA emission is not due to energetic electrons escaping from the microwave emission region. We use 270 pairs of vector magnetograms observed by Haleakala Stokes Polarimeter (HSP) and Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT) of Huairou Solar Observing Station from 1997 to 2000 to compare current helicity derived by these two instruments. We apply the same approach to both data sets to resolve 180 azimuth ambiguity and compute α coefficient of linear force-free field. After careful consideration of various aspects of both data sets, we find that in ≈80% of cases SMFT and HSP data result in the same sign of α, and the Pearson linear correlation coefficient between two data sets is rp = 0.64. As a sequel to the work by Machado et al. (1978), we discuss and evaluate the suggestions made by these authors on how to possibly reconcile the observed temperature enhancements at temperature-minimum levels in solar flares with some form of theoretical heating mechanism. After establishing the H LTE assumption used by Machado et al., we then consider EUV irradiation, and joule heating by steady currents, as heating mechanisms. We find that, unless there are strong inhomogeneities associated with either mechanism, neither can reasonably be reconciled with observations. From a high-resolution spectrum of a sunspot umbra (1.1 < < 2.3 m) we derive models of the temperature stratification in the deep layers of the umbra. The observed spectrum is corrected for straylight using the Hi Paschen line at gl = 1.282 m. A method is described for the iterative fitting of empirical temperature models to spectral information, and the method is applied to the present data. We find that the observed profiles of 3 high-excitation lines of Sii and the observed continuum contrast between umbra and photosphere cannot be reproduced with a single one-component model of the umbral atmosphere: the Si i lines require a model that is 460 K hotter at gt 0.5 = 3 than the continuum model. This indicates that hot and cool components coexist within the umbra. A temperature model derived from the relative intensity in the wings of 3 low-excitation lines of Mgi, Ali, and Sii is not significantly different from the continuum model.Based on observations obtained at Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. We think about the History of Astronomy as the History of men. As the History of a few men: Ptolemy, Copernicus, Kepler, Newton,...- men who have changed our way of looking at the sky. But the History of Astronomy is more than that, it is the History of thousand of people whose daily work has allowed the development of knowledge and scientific theories at the time they lived. This, sometimes, "tedious work" permitted the big steps. Many of these people were women, as Theano who married Pythagoras and taught mathematics and astronomy in his school, Hypatia who managed the Library of Alexandria and wrote several astronomical treatises, Hildegard of Bingen who developed a theory on the origin and structure of the Universe in the 12th century, or Sofie Brahe who, worked with her famous brother. And so many privileged women who after a long process of study, were able to develop their scientific interests in spite of been excluded from most of the educational installations and formal and informal groups of men scientist. Most of the works done by these women have been ignored, or wrongly attributed to men throughout History. It often happens that although they have been recognized as good scientists in their own times, women have been discredited by posterior historians who refused to believe that important women scientist ever existed. Here we intend to make a short summary on the lives of some of these women and their astronomical works. In this paper, economical and stable recurrence formulae for the Earth's zonal potential and its gradient for Burdet's regularized theory will be established for any number N of the zonal harmonic coefficients. A general recursive computational algorithm based on these formulae is also established for the initial value problem of Burdet oscillator for the prediction of artificial satellites in the Earth's gravitational field with axial symmetry. Applications of the algorithm for the problem of the final state prediction are illustrated by numerical examples of three test orbits each for two geopotential models corresponding to N = 2 and N = 36.A final state of any desired accuracy is obtained for each case study, a result which shows the flexibility of the algorithm.Dept. of Astronomy, KAU  相似文献

We have observed the solar Caii H and K lines to obtain well-calibrated ratios of their core residual intensities. From three independent calibrations, one using a standard lamp, we conclude that the residual intensity ratio r(K3)/r(H3) is 1.048 ± 0.03 in the quiet chromosphere and 1.20 ± 0.03 in a plage region. These ratios correspond closely to those observed in stars with quiet and active chromospheres, respectively. For a chromospheric model suggested by the calcium lines and a four-level Caii ion, we compute H and K line profiles varying the direct collisional coupling and indirect radiative and collisional coupling via the 3 2 D level. We present a discussion of the gradual burst event on May 13,1985 which is based on observations of the RATAN-600 telescope at ten fixed frequencies in the range between 37.5 and 0.95 GHz (0.8 and 31.6 cm wavelength) and on time profiles of patrol observations of the Observatory for Solar Radio Astronomy at Tremsdorf near Potsdam. This up to now most complete data set allows new conclusions on the extended spectral/spatial structure of the source region.There is strong evidence that only less than 24% of the microwave flux from this event is emitted by an excessive small-scale burst source while the bulk of the burst emission comes from a larger region consisting of two major components covered by the source area of the S-component radiation. Observations of interplanetary magnetic field polarity, solar wind speed, and geomagnetic disturbance index (C9) during the years 1962–1975 are compared in a 27-day pictorial format that emphasizes their associated variations during the sunspot cycle. This display accentuates graphically several recently reported features of solar wind streams including the fact that the streams were faster, wider, and longer-lived during 1962–1964 and 1973–1975 in the declining phase of the sunspot cycle than during intervening years (Bame et al., 1976; Gosling et al., 1976). The display reveals strikingly that these high-speed streams were associated with the major, recurrent patterns of geomagnetic activity that are characteristic of the declining phase of the sunspot cycle. Finally, the display shows that during 1962–1975 the association between long-lived solar wind streams and recurrent geomagnetic disturbances was modulated by the annual variation (Burch, 1973) of the response of the geomagnetic field to solar wind conditions. The phase of this annual variation depends on the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field in the sense that negative sectors of the interplanetary field have their greatest geomagnetic effect in northern hemisphere spring, and positive sectors have their greatest effect in the fall. Full Stokes polarimetry is obtained using the National Solar Observatory Vacuum Tower Telescope at Sacramento Peak while observing the magnetically sensitive infrared Fei line at wavelength of 1.56. Abstract— Paleomagnetic, rock magnetic, and petrophysical results are presented for impactites and target rocks from the Lake Jänisjärvi impact structure, Russian Karelia. The impactites (tagamites, suevites, and lithic breccias) are characterized by increased porosity and magnetization, which is in agreement with observations performed at other impact structures. Thermomagnetic, hysteresis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis document the presence of primary multidomain titanomagnetite with additional secondary titanomaghemite and ilmenohematite. The characteristic impact‐related remanent magnetization (ChRM) direction (D = 101.5°, I = 73.1°, α95 = 6.2°) yields a pole (Lat. = 45.0°N, Long. = 76.9°E, dp = 9.9°, dm = 11.0°). Additionally, the same component is observed as an overprint on some rocks located in the vicinity of the structure, which provides proofs of its primary origin. An attempt was made to determine the ancient geomagnetic field intensity. Seven reliable results were obtained, yielding an ancient intensity of 68.7 ± 7.6 μT (corresponding to VDM of 10.3 ± 1.1 times 1022 Am2). The intensity, however, appears to be biased toward high values mainly because of the concave shape of the Arai diagrams. The new paleomagnetic data and published isotopic ages for the structure are in disagreement. According to well‐defined paleomagnetic data, two possible ages for magnetization of Jänisjärvi rocks exist: 1) Late Sveconorwegian age (900–850 Myr) or 2) Late Cambrian age (?500 Myr). However, published isotopic ages are 718 ± 5 Myr (K‐Ar) and 698 ± 22 Myr (39Ar‐40Ar), but such isotopic dating methods are often ambiguous for the impactites.  相似文献

We present the results of our study of the H2O maser emission from the source W75N, which is associated with a star-forming region, between November 1994 and March 1999. The observations were carried out with the RT-22 radio telescope of the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Lebedev Physical Institute). The maser emission in 1994–1999 can be represented as a superposition of flares of separate components with a duration from two to six months, which occurred mainly in the radial-velocity range 8–17.5 km s?1. We detected a regular drift of the velocity centroid from 13 to 9 km s?1 and an abrupt change in its velocity from 9 to 5 km s?1, which took place at the initial stage of maser activity. Based on the variability of the total H2O flux in all years of our observations of W75N (from December 1979 through March 1999), we conclude that the long-period variability of the water-vapor maser emission has a period of ~11.5 years. We give arguments that this variability is mainly associated with the most compact group of maser spots, whose positions coincide with the position of the continuum source VLA 2.  相似文献

The profiles of H and Ca ii K lines of a arch quiescent prominence on April 1, 1971 have been analyzed and the two-dimensional distributions of electron temperature T e , micro-turbulence velocity v t and the column number density of hydrogen along the line-of-sight N H have been obtained. T e , t , and N H are found to be 7500 K, 6 km s–1 and 2.2 × 1018 cm–2 on an average, respectively. The electron temperature at the central part of the prominence and along the two arcades are greater than that at the edges, while the distribution of the micro-turbulence velocity in these regions is opposite. There is no systematic variation in T e and v t , from the center to the periphery as described by Hirayama (1971). The column number density in the central region is lower than that at the two edges.The contour lines of T e , t , and N H are predominantly vertical rather than horizontal. This implies that the height-variation of physical parameters in filamentary structure is small. The Bragg-type, flat ADP crystal spectrometer, launched on board the INTERCOSMOS 16 satellite has been used for measurements of the X-ray spectra emitted from solar active region plasmas. During the period of the instrument operation (August–September, 1976) only a few active regions were present on the Sun (minimum of the solar activity). About 60 spectra have been registered. In the present paper using a spectrum averaged over 20 scans, we measured the wavelengths corresponding to the statistically significant spectral features seen in this spectrum in the wavelength range 9.14–9.33 Å. By comparison with the calculated line wavelengths and intensities predicted in the framework of the thermal model of the average active region, we performed the identification of these features. Besides rather prominent resonance, intercombination, and forbidden lines of the He-like ion Mg xi, it was possible to identify the satellite lines which correspond to 1s 2 nl - 1s2p nl transitions from the states with n = 2, 3, and 4. The present paper is the first in a series dealing with the INTERCOSMOS 16 Mg xi spectra.  相似文献
