Cyg X-3 is actively studied in the entire range of the electromagnetic spectrum from the radio band to ultrahigh energies. Based on the detection of ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray emission, it has been suggested that Cyg X-3 could be one of the most powerful sources of charged cosmic-ray particles in the Galaxy. We present the results of long-term observations of the Cygnus Х-3 region at energies 800 GeV–100 TeV by the SHALON mirror Cherenkov telescope. In 1995 the SHALON observations revealed a new Galactic source of very high energy gamma-ray emission coincident in its coordinates with the microquasar Cyg X-3. To reliably identify the detected source with Cyg X-3, an analysis has been performed and an orbital period of 4.8 h has been found, which is a signature of Cyg X-3. A series of flares in Cyg X-3 at energies >800 GeV and their correlation with the activity in the X-ray and radio bands have been observed. The results obtained in a wide energy range for Cyg X-3, including those during the periods of relativistic jet events, are needed to find the connection and to understand the different components of an accreting binary system.

The Seyfert galaxy NGC 1275 is the central, dominant galaxy in the Perseus cluster of galaxies. NGC1275 is known as a powerful source of radio and X-ray emission. The well-known extragalactic object NGC 1275 has been observed by the SHALON high-altitude mirror Cherenkov telescopes within the framework of long-term studies of metagalactic gamma-ray sources. In 1996, the SHALON observations revealed a new metagalactic source of very high energy gamma-ray emission coincident in its coordinates with the galaxy NGC 1275. Having analyzed the SHALON data, we have determined such characteristics of NGC 1275 as the spectral energy distributions and images at energies >800 GeV for the first time. The results obtained at high and very high energies are needed for understanding the emission generation processes in an entire wide energy range.

A TeV emission component has been detected from several active galactic nuclei (AGN). The majority of TeV detections of AGN are for nearby (z < 0.13) X-ray selected BL Lacs in flaring states. The variability of these sources makes continuous monitoring necessary to detect flaring activity. The Milagro gamma-ray observatory is a wide-field (∼2 sr) instrument that operates continuously allowing daily observations of the Northern hemisphere. No significant detections of unidentified sources have been made to date. The observations are used to set limits on the time-integrated behavior of a set of X-ray selected BL Lacs. Costamante and Ghisellini [A&A 384 (2002) 56] present a selection of BL Lacs with X-ray and radio flux levels favorable for TeV emission and make predictions for the TeV flux levels. Twenty-seven objects selected from this sample are the subjects of a search for TeV emission on time scales from 8 days to 2.8 years in data taken between December 15, 2000, and September 8, 2003. None of the selected BL Lacs are detected on any of the time scales. Flux limits will be presented for each galaxy and time scale and comparisons will be made with the predicted emission. TeV γ-ray detections in flaring states without activity in X-rays from blazars have attracted much attention due to the irregularity of these “orphan” flares. Although the synchrotron self-Compton model has been very successful in explaining the spectral energy distribution and spectral variability of these sources, it has not been able to describe these atypical flaring events. On the other hand, an electron–positron pair plasma at the base of the AGN jet was proposed as the mechanism of bulk acceleration of relativistic outflows. This plasma in quasi-thermal equilibrium called Wein fireball emits radiation at MeV-peak energies serving as target of accelerated protons. In this work we describe the “orphan” TeV flares presented in blazars 1ES 1959+650 and Mrk 421 assuming geometrical considerations in the jet and evoking the interactions of Fermi-accelerated protons and MeV-peak target photons coming from the Wein fireball. After describing successfully these “orphan” TeV flares, we correlate the TeV γ-ray, neutrino and UHECR fluxes through interactions and calculate the number of high-energy neutrinos and UHECRs expected in IceCube/AMANDA and TA experiment, respectively. In addition, thermal MeV neutrinos produced mainly through electron–positron annihilation at the Wein fireball will be able to propagate through it. By considering two- (solar, atmospheric and accelerator parameters) and three-neutrino mixing, we study the resonant oscillations and estimate the neutrino flavor ratios as well as the number of thermal neutrinos expected on Earth.

Blazars are the most violent steady/recurrent sources of high-energy gamma-ray emission in the known Universe. They are prominent emitters of electromagnetic radiation throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The observable radiation most likely originates in a relativistic jet oriented at a small angle with respect to the line of sight. This review starts out with a general overview of the phenomenology of blazars, including results from a recent multiwavelength observing campaign on 3C279. Subsequently, issues of modeling broadband spectra will be discussed. Spectral information alone is not sufficient to distinguish between competing models and to constrain essential parameters, in particular related to the primary particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms in the jet. Short-term spectral variability information may help to break such model degeneracies, which will require snap-shot spectral information on intraday time scales, which may soon be achievable for many blazars even in the gamma-ray regime with the upcoming GLAST mission and current advances in Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope technology. In addition to pure leptonic and hadronic models of gamma-ray emission from blazars, leptonic/hadronic hybrid models are reviewed, and the recently developed hadronic synchrotron mirror model for TeV γ-ray flares which are not accompanied by simultaneous X-ray flares (“orphan TeV flares”) is revisited. We report results of our optical photometric observations of ten gamma-ray loud blazers, namely: 0219+428 (3C66A), PKS 0420-014 (OA 129), S5 0716+714, 0754+100 (OI 090.4), 0827+243 (OJ248), 1652+398 (Mrk 501), 2200+420 (BL Lacertae), 2230+114 (CTA 102), 2251+158 (3C 454.3) and 2344+514. The observations were carried out in September-October, 2000 using the 70 cm optical telescope at Abstumani Observatory, Georgia. We found intra-day variations in 0420-014, S5 0716+714, BL Lacertae and CTA 102. A variation of 0.3 magnitude over a time scale of about 3 hours was observed in the R passband in BL Lacertae on JD 2451827. We did not detect any variation in 3C 66A, Mrk 501, or 3C 454.3 during our observations. Nor did we detect any clear evidence of variation in 1ES 2344+514 during our two weeks' observing run of the TeV gamma-ray source.

We report on the optical color variability of a sample of 24 blazars, consisting of nine flat spectrum radio quasars(FSRQs) and 15 BL Lacertae objects(BL Lacs), on timescales of years using simultaneous V-and R-band observations observed by the Kanata telescope at Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory. The correlations between color indices V-R and magnitudes reveal that 11 BL Lacs and one FSRQ exhibited significant(i.e., r 0.2 and P 0.01) bluer-when-brighter(BWB) trend and two FSRQs followed the redder-when-brighter(RWB) tend, indicating a possibility that the BWB chromatic trend is dominant for BL Lacs and the RWB trend is especially found in FSRQs, which has been presented occasionally in different samples of blazars. The superpositions of the red emission component from the Doppler-boosted relativistic jet and the blue component arising from the accretion disk might be a possible interpretation for the long-term color behaviors.

The present status of the search for counterparts of gamma-ray bursts is given. Particular emphasis will be put on the search for flaring counterparts, i.e. emission during or shortly after the gamma-ray emission. In view of a separate review on optical counterparts I will concentrate on GeV/TeV, X-ray, radio and neutrino searches.

Gamma rays have been observed from two blazars at TeV energies. One of these, Markarian 421, has been observed also at GeV energies and has roughly equal luminosity per decade at GeV and TeV energies. Photon-photon pair production on the infrared background radiation is expected to prevent observation above 1 TeV. However, the infrared background is not well known and it may be possible to observe the nearest blazars up to energies somewhat below 100 TeV where absorption on the cosmic microwave background will give a sharp cut-off. Blazars are commonly believed to correspond to low power radio galaxies, seen down along a relativistic jet; as such they are all expected to have the nuclear activity encircled by a dusty molecular torus, which subtends an angle of 90 degrees or more in width as seen from the central source. Photon-photon pair production can also take place on the infrared radiation produced at the AGN by this molecular torus and surrounding outer disk. We calculate the optical depth for escaping γ-rays produced near the central black hole and at various points along the jet axis for the case of blazars where the radiation is observed in a direction closely aligned with the jet. We find that the TeV emission site must be well above the top of the torus. For example, if the torus has an inner radius of 0.1 pc and an outer radius of 0.2 pc, then the emission site in Mrk 421 would have be at least 0.25 pc above the upper surface of the torus, and if Mrk 421 is observed above 50 TeV in the future, the emission site would have to be at least 0.5 pc above the upper surface. This has important implications for models of γ-ray emission in active galactic nuclei.

We study the correlation between the emission from the broad-line region (BLR) and the emission in other wavelength ranges (from radio to x-ray) for the sample of 37 blazars (25 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 10 BLLac blazars). Studying the relation between luminosities in various wavebands and the BLR luminosity is an effective method to examine the connection between the accretion rate and the luminosity of the jet.We used simultaneous RATAN-600measurements of blazar flux densities at six frequencies: 1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2, and 21.7 GHz. The observational data from other bands was taken from the literature. To determine the effect produced by the state of the object on the correlation, for the radio data we used the measurements obtained with the RATAN-600 in two states-namely, the maximum and minimum flux density values. We show that at some frequencies of the radio band, there exists a correlation of emission with the emission in the BLR for two types of blazars. In the FSRQ and BL Lac blazars, the correlation between the flux from the BLR and the flux in the radio band is indistinguishable in all cases, except for the case when a strong flux density variation was considered for the BL Lac-type of blazars (tens of percent). At the same time, the levels of significance for BL Lac (at certain frequencies p is worse than 0.05) in the active state indicate only the probable presence of connection. On the example of the sample, we show that the variability of emission significantly affects the level of correlation. Our results are consistent with the theoretical predictions about the close relationship of the accretion disk and the jet in blazars.

The AMANDA neutrino telescope has recently reported the detection of high-energy neutrinos spatially and temporally coincident with the flaring of the TeV blazar 1ES 1959 + 650. If high-energy neutrinos are in fact generated by this blazar, it would be the first strong evidence for the hadronic acceleration of cosmic rays. At present, the statistical significance of this observation cannot be reliably assessed, however. In this letter, we investigate whether circumstances exist where the source can produce the flux implied by the coincident events. We show that if the TeV gamma-ray emission observed from 1ES 1959 + 650 or other nearby TeV blazars is the result of accelerated protons interacting with nucleons, it is reasonable that AMANDA could detect several events during a flaring period. Such rates require that the spectral index of the source be rather high (for instance 2.8 for 1ES 1959 + 650) and that the Lorentz factor of the jet be fairly small (Γ  1).

In 1998–2011 the blazar (active galactic nucleus) BL Lacertae was observed at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (CrAO) with the second-generation GT-48 Cherenkov telescope at energies >1 TeV with a total significance of 11.8σ. More than 20 flares and a fourfold change in yearly mean fluxes (>1 TeV) were recorded. The optical (B band) data obtained at CrAO and the TeV data are shown to correlate in some time intervals. The optical data are also compared with the X-ray RXTE/ASM (2–10 keV) data. In addition, the data from GT-48 are compared with the gamma-ray fluxes recorded by the Fermi LAT space telescope (0.1–300 GeV). The 2009 flare at TeV and Fermi energies has been studied. As a result, it has been found that as the activity rises the increase in flux at high energies exceeds its increase at low energies. This conclusion may be related to the conversion mechanism of particle acceleration. This is consistent with the results of studies for a similar object, 1ES 1426+428.

Until recently, most of the information on particle acceleration processes in solar flares has been obtained from hard X-ray and cm-microwave observations. As a rule they provide information on electrons with energies below 300 keV. During recent years it became possible to measure the gamma-ray and millimeter radio emission with improved sensitivities. These spectral ranges carry information on much higher energy electrons. We studied the temporal and spectral behaviour of the radio burst emission at centimeter-millimeter wavelengths (8–50 GHz) by using the data from the patrol instruments of IAP (Bern University). We have analyzed more than 20 impulsive and long duration radio bursts (of 10 s to several 100 s duration). The main finding of the data analysis is the presence of spectral flattening throughout the bursts, which occurs always during the decay phase of flux peaks, at frequencies well above the spectral peak frequency and independently of burst duration. Furthermore, for some of the bursts, the flux maxima at higher frequencies are delayed. These findings can serve as evidence of the hardening of the electron spectrum at energies above some hundreds of keV during the decay phase of cm–mm flux peaks. As a most likely reason for such a hardening we consider Coulomb collisions of energetic electrons continuously injected and trapped in a flaring loop.

We collect a sample of 51 Fermi-detected gamma-ray loud blazars with known radio Doppler factors and study properties of the Doppler factors of blazars at optical,X-ray and gamma-ray bands.A basic assumption is that the emission from the radio to gamma-ray bands of the blazars are produced by the nonthermal radiation of accelerated particles in a jet.Our results show that (1) the Doppler factors of blazars are a function of frequency, with the Doppler factor decreasing with frequency from the radio to X-ray ...

We present a calculation of the blazar contribution to the extragalactic diffuse γ -ray background (EGRB) in the EGRET energy range. Our model is based on inverse-Compton scattering as the dominant γ -ray production process in the jets of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lac objects, and on the unification scheme of radio-loud AGN. According to this picture, blazars represent the beamed fraction of the Fanaroff–Riley radio galaxies (FR galaxies).
The observed log  N –log  S distribution and redshift distribution of both FSRQs and BL Lacs constrain our model. Depending slightly on the evolutionary behaviour of blazars, we find that unresolved AGN underproduce the intensity of the extragalactic background radiation. With our model only 20–40 per cent of the extragalactic background emission can be explained by unresolved blazars if we integrate to a maximum redshift of Z max=3. For Z max=5, blazars could account for 40–80 per cent of the EGRB. Roughly 70–90 per cent of the AGN contribution to the EGRB would result from BL Lacs. While the systematic uncertainties in our estimate for the FSRQ contribution appear small, in the case of BL Lacs our model parameters are not consistent with the results from studies in other wavelength regimes, and therefore may have larger systematic uncertainties. Thus we end up with two possibilities, depending on whether we underpredict or overpredict the BL Lac contribution: either unresolved AGN cannot account for the entire EGRB, or unresolved BL Lacs produce the observed background.
We predict a significant flattening of the γ -ray log  N –log  S function in the next two decades of flux below the EGRET threshold.

Most of the extragalactic sources from which very-high-energy (VHE, E > 1011 eV) gamma-ray fluxes have been detected belong to the category of high-energy peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs)—the sources in which the synchrotron radiation peaks in the UV or X-ray band. They often have higher X-ray luminosities than the VHE gamma-ray energy output, which makes them the most valuable objects for studying the characteristic spectral and temporal variations in the region of the synchrotron peak of the spectral energy distribution. The blazar 1ES 1426+428 belonging to this category is a target of many multiwavelength studies, both orbital and ground-based ones. The properties of its X-ray emission have also been investigated using RXTE/PCA, XMM-Newton, and SWIFT observations. Archival PCA/RXTE data with a total exposure time in 2002 and 2004 of ≈120h and the most recent available background and calibration files have been used. The extracted light curves of 1ES 1426+428 in the 2.9–24 keV energy band have shown an intense flaring activity on various time scales. Analysis of the observational data has also confirmed the spectral hardening with increasing X-ray intensity typical of blazars. The flaring state of the object is also characterized by a flat spectrum, which steepens with decreasing flux. The previously detected evidence of a spectral hysteresis in a separate flare has also been confirmed. Observations of 1ES 1426+428 with the SWIFT/XRT telescope and the EPIC instrument onboard XMM-Newton have revealed several intermediate-intensity flares in the 1.5–12 keV energy band with flux variations reaching a factor of 2, while analysis of the light curves has revealed a correlation between two components of the X-ray emission from the object.

We present a review of selected studies based upon simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of solar flares and coronal transients. We use primarily the observations made with large radio imaging instruments (VLA, BIMA, Nobeyama, and Nançay) along with Yohkoh/SXT and HXT and CGRO experiments. We review the recent work on millimeter imaging of solar flares, microwave and hard X-ray observations of footpoint emission from flaring loops, metric type IV continuum bursts, and coronal X-ray structures. We discuss the recent studies on thermal and nonthermal processes in coronal transients such as XBP flares, coronal X-ray jets, and active region transient brightenings.Dedicated to Cornelis de Jager
