In 2005 Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research embarked upon a new initiative for its readers. Key researchers in various fields of geoanalytical technique development and their application were identified and invited to provide reviews pertinent to their expertise. As noted in the first of these publications "…instead of revisiting the historical context or decades of development in each analytical technique, the goal here has been to capture a snapshot of "hot topics" across a range of fields as represented in the… literature" (Hergt et al . 2005). Rather than prepare an annual review, a decision was taken earlier this year to provide a biennial summary of progress and accomplishments, in this case for the years 2004–2005. The principal techniques employed in Earth and environmental sciences are covered here, and include laser ablation and multicollector ICP-MS, ICP-AES, thermal ionisation and secondary ion mass spectrometry, as well as neutron activation analysis, X-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry. A comprehensive review of the development of reference materials, often essential to these techniques, is also provided. The contributions assembled serve both to keep readers informed of advances they may be unfamiliar with, but also as a means of showcasing examples of the breadth and depth of work being conducted in these fields.  相似文献

In 2005 the Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research editorial team, in the true spirit of scientific endeavour, embarked on an experiment of our own. We decided to trial a new kind of review, somewhat different from those more typically observed in journals, and one that would provide readers with a summary of analytical developments across a broad range of topics appropriate to the Earth sciences. The first contribution of this kind appeared in 2005, and reported on developments in 2003 (Hergt et al. 2005). The second, this time a biennial review, was published in 2006 and reported on highlights of the 2004 and 2005 literature (Hergt et al. 2006). Based on reprint requests, positive remarks at conferences and strong citations we consider the experiment a resounding success and proudly present here the third in this series. This comprises six individual review sections that cover the main analytical technologies and topical application fields in geoanalysis and geochemistry, including geological and environmental reference materials, ICP‐thermal and secondary ionisation‐mass spectrometry, as well as neutron activation analysis, X‐ray fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometry.  相似文献

As in all fields of sample analysis, reference materials play a large role in supporting measurements in the geosciences. While a rather large number of materials are in distribution (> 380), not all are equally effective or fit-for-purpose in supporting laboratory data quality and thereby assuring the desired comparability of measurements between laboratories. Equally important, reference values that are not fit-for-purpose cannot be used effectively to establish traceability links between laboratory measurements and national and international standards. The needed fitness-for-purpose is not achieved for reference values either when more than one reference value has been proposed and a consensus does not exist among users as to which should be used by all, or when reference value uncertainties are too large in comparison to those of routine laboratory measurements. The focus of this review will be, first to outline the current reality, and second to suggest ways in which certifications of RMs can be improved to provide reference values that are universally accepted and more fit-for-purpose in general laboratory use. The discussion will be illustrated largely by current uses of USGS BCR-1, NIST SRM 610 and IAEA NBS28, as these three materials are those for which the largest body of newly published data exists, according to recent bibliographies of the geoanalytical literature published annually in Geostandards Newsletter: The Journal of Geostandards and Geoanalysis.  相似文献

Reference materials (RM) are essential to achieve traceability of measurements. Specific uses of RM in analytical laboratories are the validation of methods, the calibration of instruments, the quality control and the demonstration of proficiency. This paper describes the certification of a new geochemical reference material, named BRP-1 (Basalt Ribeirão Preto), and acts as the certificate of analysis for this RM. The rock sample was crushed and pulverised at the USGS (Denver, USA), homogenised and split into 1920 bottles, with 55 g each. BRP-1 was transported back to Brazil and the homogeneity between and within bottles was assessed to demonstrate sufficient homogeneity for certification. The chemical characterisation was performed by twenty-five laboratories. Each laboratory received two bottles of BRP-1 and one of BCR-2 (Basalt Columbia River) used for quality control (QC). Reference values and uncertainties were calculated for forty-four constituents of BRP-1, following ISO Guide 35 recommendations and the IAG Protocol. The calculation of each reference value included data of proven traceability from at least ten laboratories using two or more analytical techniques and the uncertainties combines the characterisation and between bottle homogeneity contributions.  相似文献

标准物质作为地质分析的计量标准,在分析质量监控、仪器校准、方法评价和仲裁分析中发挥着重要作用。铂族元素分析一直是地质材料分析中最棘手的任务之一,铂族元素标准物质研制困难,数量少,严重影响了对铂族元素分析方法的评价和分析数据的质量监控,成为铂族金属矿产资源勘查、评价和相关研究工作的瓶颈。收集了中国及国际上现有的34个铂族元素标准物质和52个其他地球化学标准物质中的101个铂族元素定值数据。为便于使用也收集了这些标准物质中其他元素的含量信息,给出了铂族各元素按含量大小排列的信息简表以方便选择。充分利用这些标准物质对促进铂族元素分析方法研究,保证铂族元素分析数据质量,提高中国和世界铂族金属矿产资源勘查、评价及研究水平具有重要意义。  相似文献

This review gives an overview of the use and development of reference materials of geochemical and environmental interest in the literature of the years 2004 and 2005. In these years the performance of existing methods has been improved and new geochemical applications using new techniques have been developed. Accordingly, there was an increasing need for new reference materials, especially for in situ microanalysis and for precise stable isotope measurements. In addition, there was a notable trend for further characterisation of existing reference materials, mainly for the platinum-group elements. This review focuses on five topics: reference materials for platinum-group elements, reference glasses for in situ microanalysis, zircon reference materials, isotopic reference materials, and the development and certification of reference materials.  相似文献

A dunite reference material has been prepared as part of the reference materials programme at the National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, India. The scarcity of reference materials for undertaking the chemical analysis of ultramafic rocks for major and trace elements justified the preparation of such a rock reference material. A 300 kg sample of starting material was collected from an active quarry near the town of Salem in Tamil Nadu, southern India. The sample was homogenized and an invitation for round robin participation was published in Geostandards Newsletter (October 1995). A total of twenty seven international laboratories participated in the study, providing information on the total element concentration of major, minor, trace and rare earth elements. Following data compilation, outlier rejection, and statistical analysis, proposed and indicative total element concentrations are reported for twenty four elements.  相似文献

Geostandards are needed to intercalibrate environmental research and routine environmental monitoring programs. Because a principal concern in both types of analyses is the elemental concentrations of discrete phases, values for partial extractions of geostandards are also needed. This and other information are solicited for an intercalibration among laboratories which monitor metals in marine sediments and wastewater sludge.  相似文献

The advent of multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry has provided an impetus to the study of isotope abundance variations in natural materials. In particular, the study of "non-traditional" stable isotopes has revealed isotope fractionation variations caused by a range of physiochemical and biological mechanisms. The magnitude of these variations may be < 1 per mil per mass unit, but are significant in terms of the experimental uncertainties involved, provided rigorous mass spectrometric protocols are followed. The double spike technique can be used effectively to evaluate isotope fractionation effects for both multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and thermal ionisation mass spectrometry. The demanding nature of this research implies the need for internationally-accepted reference materials so that interlaboratory comparisons can be made with confidence. At present, isotopically certified reference materials are unavailable for many elements, including Cu, Zn, Mo and Cd, and it is important that this situation be rectified as soon as practicable. Until such time as isotopically certified reference materials become available for every element, stable isotope geochemists should adopt a common reference material as the standard for each element so that rigorous interlaboratory comparisons can be made.  相似文献

A critical aspect of any quality control program is the definition of criteria for “satisfactory’ performance of analytical methods. These criteria should address both expected accuracy and expected precision of the methods, as well as any variation in these figures of merit from one sample type to another. Any review of the analytical literature shows that, while reference materials are routinely used in laboratories world-wide, not all uses follow ISO Guide 33 (1989), which outlines best practices. Analytical data quality can suffer as a result. This paper reviews the various uses that the geoanalytical community has made of reference materials from a historical perspective, and suggests improvements in practice that would more closely follow ISO Guide 33 recommendations.  相似文献

This review gives an overview of the literature on reference materials of geochemical and environmental interest for the two-year period 2008–2009. Reference materials play an increasingly important role in all fields of geoanalytical research. This is demonstrated by the large number of publications containing data on reference materials. Although many reference materials exist, there is still a great need for certified samples, so-called delta zero materials for stable isotopic work and homogeneous microanalytical reference materials. This review focuses on six topics: developments of certification processes of reference materials mainly postulated in ISO guidelines and the IAG protocol, new developments of the GeoReM database, investigations of powdered rock reference materials, Chinese reference materials published in Chinese journals, microanalytical reference materials and isotopic reference materials.  相似文献

Advances in the chemical and isotopic characterisation of geological and environmental materials can often be ascribed to technological improvements in analytical hardware. Equally, the creation of novel methods of data acquisition and interpretation, including access to better reference materials, can also be crucial components enabling important breakthroughs. This biennial review highlights key advances in either instrumentation or data acquisition and treatment, which have appeared since January 2010. This review is based on the assessments by scientists prominent in each of the given analytical fields; it is not intended as an exhaustive summary, but rather provides insight from experts of the most significant advances and trends in their given field of expertise. In contrast to earlier reviews, this presentation has been formulated into a unified work, providing a single source covering a broad spectrum of geoanalytical techniques. Additionally, some themes that were not previously emphasised, in particular thermal ionisation mass spectrometry, accelerator‐based methods and vibrational spectroscopy, are also presented in detail.  相似文献

我国地质调查实验测试研究项目主要来源于中国地质调查局科技外事部。中国地质调查局成立十年来,在地质"野战军"装备计划的大力支持下,在地质行业强大需求的推动下,我国的地质实验测试技术得到发展,分析测试仪器装备得到加强,实验测试人才队伍逐渐壮大,分析测试水平及能力明显提升。基本建立了从主量、微量到痕量元素分析,从无机组分到有机组分分析,从固体、液体到油气样品分析,能全方位覆盖地质调查样品类型、满足地质调查需求的实验测试技术方法体系及相应的样品分析能力。文章介绍了十年来由中国地质调查局科技外事部支持的地质调查实验测试研究项目情况,从无机测试分析技术方法、有机测试分析技术方法、同位素测试技术方法及应用、地球化学系列标准物质研制、地质实验仪器研发及升级改造、实验室信息管理系统应用推广等六方面总结了我国十年地质调查实验测试研究项目取得的主要成果。  相似文献

This GGR biennial critical review covers developments and innovations in key analytical methods published since January 2014, relevant to the chemical, isotopic and crystallographic characterisation of geological and environmental materials. In nine selected analytical fields, publications considered to be of wide significance are summarised, background information is provided and their importance evaluated. In addition to instrumental technologies, this review also presents a summary of new developments in the preparation and characterisation of rock, microanalytical and isotopic reference materials, including a précis of recent changes and revisions to ISO guidelines for reference material characterisation and reporting. Selected reports are provided of isotope ratio determinations by both solution nebulisation MC‐ICP‐MS and laser ablation‐ICP‐MS, as well as of radioactive isotope geochronology by LA‐ICP‐MS. Most of the analytical techniques elaborated continue to provide new applications for geochemical analysis; however, it is noted that instrumental neutron activation analysis has become less popular in recent years, mostly due to the reduced availability of nuclear reactors to act as a neutron source. Many of the newer applications reported here provide analysis at increasingly finer resolution. Examples include atom probe tomography, a very sensitive method providing atomic scale information, nanoscale SIMS, for isotopic imaging of geological and biological samples, and micro‐XRF, which has a spatial resolution many orders of magnitude smaller than conventional XRF.  相似文献

总结了80年代中国化探的成就与不足之处。目的是更好的对中国化探走向2000年进行战略部署。中国的区域化探全国扫面计划在80年代取得了重大成就。已覆盖了400万km2的面积,发现了600余新的矿化产地,其中158个已成为新的有工业价值的矿床。研制了适用于乾旱、半乾旱、高寒山区、卡斯特及黄土覆盖地区的野外工作方法。研制了高效率低检出限的多元素分析系统及质量监控方案。所有这一切使得中国在系统进行地球化学填图工作方面在全世界居于领先地位,并带动了中国化探的全面发展。主要的不足之处是从80年代后半叶起,研究工作在指导整个这项计划的作用逐渐削弱,而整个计划逐渐变成纯生产性的例行工作。地球化学填图将成为地学及勘查地球化学新前沿已为国际上许多杰出科学家所承认。中国在填图技术以及信息累积上所占有的优势将给中国勘查地球化学家在90年代提供激动人心的新机会。简略的提出了一些新的研究方向。  相似文献
