The Planet Formation Imager (PFI, www.planetformationimager.org) is a next-generation infrared interferometer array with the primary goal of imaging the active phases of planet formation in nearby star forming regions. PFI will be sensitive to warm dust emission using mid-infrared capabilities made possible by precise fringe tracking in the near-infrared. An L/M band combiner will be especially sensitive to thermal emission from young exoplanets (and their disks) with a high spectral resolution mode to probe the kinematics of CO and H2O gas. In this paper, we give an overview of the main science goals of PFI, define a baseline PFI architecture that can achieve those goals, point at remaining technical challenges, and suggest activities today that will help make the Planet Formation Imager facility a reality.  相似文献

Making use of the latest available semi-empirical atmospheric models, solar XUV radiations rates of photoionization and absorbed energy profiles have been graphically presented showing the latitudinal, seasonal and solar cycle variations. The photoionization limits of the major neutral constitutents of the terrestrial atmosphere O2, O, and N2 that occur at wavelengths 102.7, 91.2, and 79.6 nm, respectively have been quantified by showing the photoionization rates of O 2 + , O+, and N 2 + for different spectral groups both under quiet and different solar flare conditions. The variability of the photoionization efficiency parameter which is height-dependent, from winter to summer, for solar minimum to solar maximum for four significantly different latitudes under local noon conditions have been investigated during the solar cycle 21. More energy is required to produce an electron-ion pair in a denser atmosphere than in a thinner atmosphere and hence more energy is being deposited in the height range between 100–120 km which itself manifests in raising the electron gas temperatures higher than the neutral gas temperatures.  相似文献

Despite several spacecraft encounters and numerous groundbased investigations, we still do not know much about Jupiter's deep atmosphere; in fact, the Galileo probe results were so different than anyone had anticipated, that we understand even less about this planet's atmosphere now than before the Galileo mission. We formulate four basic questions in Section 1.3, which, if solved, would help to better understand the chemistry and dynamics in Jupiter's atmosphere. We believe that three out of the four questions (explanation of NH3 altitude profile, characterization of hot spots, altitude below which the atmosphere is uniformly mixed) may be solved from passive sounding of Jupiter's deep (∼ tens of bars) atmosphere via a radio telescope orbiting the planet. Question nr. 4 (the water abundance in Jupiter's deep atmosphere) has been singled out by the Solar System Exploration Decadal Survey as a key question, since the water abundance in Jupiter's deep atmosphere is tied in with planet formation models. In this paper we investigate the sensitivity of microwave retrievals to the composition of Jupiter's deep atmosphere, in particular the water abundance. Based upon present uncertainties in the ammonia abundance and other known and unknown absorbers, including uncertainties in clouds (density and index of refraction), and uncertainties in the thermal structure and lineshape profiles, we conclude that the retrieval of water at depth from microwave spectra (disk-averaged and locally) will be highly uncertain. We show that, if the H2O lineshape profile would be accurately known (laboratory data are needed!), an atmosphere with a near-solar H2O abundance can likely be distinguished from one with an abundance of 10-20×solar O based upon the difference in their microwave spectra at wavelengths ?50 cm. This would be sufficient to distinguish between some proposed scenarios by which Jupiter acquired its inventory of volatile elements heavier than helium. If, in addition, limb-darkening measurements are obtained (again, the H2O lineshape profile should be known), tighter constraints on the H2O abundance can be obtained (see also Janssen et al., 2004, this issue).  相似文献

We obtained low resolution (R=100) mid-infrared (8–13 μm wavelengths) spectra of 8 nearby young main sequence stars with the Keck 1 telescope and Long-Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) to search for 10 μm silicate (Si–O stretch) emission from circumstellar dust. No stars exhibited readily apparent emission: Spectra were then analyzed by least-squares fitting of a template based on a spectrum of Comet Hale-Bopp. Using this technique, we were able to constrain the level of silicate emission to a threshold 10 times below what was previously possible from space. We found one star, HD 17925, with a spectrum statistically different from its calibrator and consistent with a silicate emission peak of 7% of the photosphere at a wavelength of 10 μm. Excess emission at 60 μm from this star has already been reported.  相似文献

The transmission of light through a planetary atmosphere can be studied as a function of altitude and wavelength using stellar or solar occultations, giving often unique constraints on the atmospheric composition. For exoplanets, a transit yields a limb-integrated, wavelength-dependent transmission spectrum of an atmosphere. When scattering haze and/or cloud particles are present in the planetary atmosphere, the amount of transmitted flux not only depends on the total optical thickness of the slant light path that is probed, but also on the amount of forward-scattering by the scattering particles. Here, we present results of calculations with a three-dimensional Monte Carlo code that simulates the transmitted flux during occultations or transits. For isotropically scattering particles, like gas molecules, the transmitted flux appears to be well-described by the total atmospheric optical thickness. Strongly forward-scattering particles, however, such as commonly found in atmospheres of Solar System planets, can increase the transmitted flux significantly. For exoplanets, such added flux can decrease the apparent radius of the planet by several scale heights, which is comparable to predicted and measured features in exoplanet transit spectra. We performed detailed calculations for Titan’s atmosphere between 2.0 and 2.8 μm and show that haze and gas abundances will be underestimated by about 8% if forward-scattering is ignored in the retrievals. At shorter wavelengths, errors in the gas and haze abundances and in the spectral slope of the haze particles can be several tens of percent, also for other Solar System planetary atmospheres. We also find that the contribution of forward-scattering can be fairly well described by modelling the atmosphere as a plane-parallel slab. This potentially reduces the need for a full three-dimensional Monte Carlo code for calculating transmission spectra of atmospheres that contain forward-scattering particles.  相似文献

The search for habitable exoplanets centers on planets with Earth-like conditions around late type stars. Radial velocity searches for these planets require precisions of 1 m/s and better. That is now being achieved. At these precisions stellar surface motions might lead to false detections. Of particular interest are variable meridional flows on stellar surfaces. I review the available observations of solar surface meridional flows using both Doppler shift and local helioseismology techniques. Interpretation in terms of Doppler shifts in integrated starlight leads to estimates of the likelihood of false detections. It is unlikely that these false detections occur in the habitability zones of exoplanets. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In this work we discuss effects allowing local habitability of some extraterrestrial planets of low average surface temperatures. We analyze the problem of diurnal and seasonal changes of temperature and biological productivity at different locations on a hypothetical Earth-like planet. We have found, that under some circumstances the temperature may locally rise well above the average value, allowing periods of enhanced biological activity. In this way, bioproductivity can become periodically possible on a planet that has an average temperature clearly below 0°C. Such thermal conditions are encountered on Mars (Smith et al. in Science 306:1750–1753, 2004) generally considered as inhabitable. In reality, an appropriate temperature is not sufficient for habitability. The presence of liquid water at the considered location is also necessary. We discuss how temperature oscillations affect habitability in the framework of a conceptual model. We find that the considered effect of diurnal and seasonal temperature oscillations can extend the outer boundary of the habitable zone up to 2 AU, while global average temperatures are below 0°C for heliocentric distances R h > 1.12 AU (dry atmosphere, low CO2 pressure), or R h > 1.66 AU (humid atmosphere, high CO2 pressure).  相似文献

More than 500 images of Io in eclipse were acquired by the Cassini spacecraft in late 2000 and early 2001 as it passed through the jovian system en route to Saturn (Porco et al., 2003, Science 299, 1541-1547). Io's bright equatorial glows were detected in Cassini's near-ultraviolet filters, supporting the interpretation that the visible emissions are predominantly due to molecular SO2. Detailed comparisons of laboratory SO2 spectra with the Cassini observations indicate that a mixture of gases contribute to the equatorial emissions. Potassium is suggested by new detections of the equatorial glows at near-infrared wavelengths from 730 to 800 nm. Neutral atomic oxygen and sodium are required to explain the brightness of the glows at visible wavelengths. The molecule S2 is postulated to emit most of the glow intensity in the wavelength interval from 390 to 500 nm. The locations of the visible emissions vary in response to the changing orientation of the external magnetic field, tracking the tangent points of the jovian magnetic field lines. Limb glows distinct from the equatorial emissions were observed at visible to near-infrared wavelengths from 500 to 850 nm, indicating that atomic O, Na, and K are distributed across Io's surface. Stratification of the atmosphere is demonstrated by differences in the altitudes of emissions at various wavelengths: SO2 emissions are confined to a region close to Io's surface, whereas neutral oxygen emissions are seen at altitudes that reach up to 900 km, or half the radius of the satellite. Pre-egress brightening demonstrates that light scattered into Jupiter's shadow by gases or aerosols in the giant planet's upper atmosphere contaminates images of Io taken within 13 minutes of entry into or emergence from Jupiter's umbra. Although partial atmospheric collapse is suggested by the longer timescale for post-ingress dimming than pre-egress brightening, Io's atmosphere must be substantially supported by volcanism to retain auroral emissions throughout the duration of eclipse.  相似文献

Angel and co-workers have proposed to detect exoplanets around nearby stars in the infrared (6–17 m) and to analyze their spectra, searching for H2O, CO2, CH4, NH3, and O3 spectral features. The presence or absence of CO2 would indicate either a strong similarity or difference with Solar telluric planet atmospheres. Water would indicate a habitable planet, and O3 would reveal significant photosynthesis activity, due to the presence of carbon chemistry based life. Like these authors, we suggest an infrared nulling interferometer pointing to the star and working as a coronograph. Our main contribution is to propose an observatory made of four to five 1-meter class telescopes observing from about 4 to 5 AU to avoid the Solar Zodiacal Light (ZL) background at 10m instead of four 8-meter ones observing from the Earth vicinity. This allows the mission to be feasible in thenear future. The concept, named DARWIN, is under consideration by the European Space Agency for its Horizon 2000 Plus program.  相似文献

A critical analysis has been made of solar irradiance in the spectral region covering wavelengths from 100 nm upwards; the absorption characteristics of molecules of oxygen and ozone have been taken into account with a view to the direct application of the results to atmospheric photochemistry. The absorption of radiation by these molecules results in the photodissociation of both of them in the homosphere, and it also makes possible the penetration of solar radiation from the thermosphere, through the mesosphere and the stratosphere, down to the troposphere.Special attention has been given to each of the following spectral regions: Lyman-alpha radiation at 121.6 nm, the O2 Schumann-Runge continuum at wavelengths less than 175 nm, the O2 Schumann-Runge band system from 200 to 175 nm, and the O2 Herzberg continuum at 242.4 nm. For absorption by ozone, the solar spectrum has been analysed in the following regions: the Hartley band at wavelengths less than 310 nm, the Huggins bands at wavelengths above 310 nm and the visible Chappuis bands. Finally, for the photodissociation of O3, particular attention has been given to the transition region (300–320 nm) in which there is a change-over from the production of the excited atom O(1D) to that of the atom in its ground state O(3p).  相似文献

We present the results of our long-term photometric and spectroscopic observations at the Russian–Turkish RTT-150 telescope for the optical counterpart to one of the best-known sources, representatives of the class of fast X-ray transients, IGR J17544-2619. Based on our optical data, we have determined for the first time the orbital and physical parameters of the binary system by the methods of Doppler spectroscopy. We have calculated theoretical spectra of the optical counterpart by applying non- LTE corrections for selected lines and obtained the parameters of the stellar atmosphere (T eff = 33 000 K, log g = 3.85, R = 9.5 R , and M = 23 M ). The latter suggest that the optical star is not a supergiant as has been thought previously.  相似文献

An investigation of the capabilities and science goals of a submillimeter-wave heterodyne sounder onboard a Titan orbiter is presented. Based on a model of Titan’s submillimeter spectrum, and including realistic instrumental performances, we show that passive limb observations of Titan’s submillimeter radiation would bring novel and unique information on the dynamical and chemical state of Titan’s atmosphere, particularly in the so far poorly probed 500-900 km region. The 300-360, 540-660 and 1080-1280 GHz spectral ranges appear especially promising, and could be explored with an instrument equipped with a tunable local oscillator system. Vertical temperature profiles can be determined up to ∼1200 km using rotational lines of CH4, CO, and HCN. Winds can be measured over the 200-1200 km altitude range with an accuracy of 3-5 m/s from Doppler shift measurements of any strong optically thin line. Numerous molecular species are accessible, including H2O, NH3, CH3C2H, CH2NH, and several nitriles (HC3N, HC5N, CH3CN, and C2H3CN). Many of them are expected to be detectable in a large fraction of the atmosphere and in some cases at all levels, providing an observational link between stratospheric and thermospheric chemistry. Isotopic variants of some of these species can also be measured, providing new measurements of H, C, N, and O isotopic ratios. Mapping of the thermal, wind, and composition fields, best achieved from a polar orbit and with an articulated antenna, would provide a new view of the couplings between chemistry and dynamics over an extended altitude range of Titan’s atmosphere. Additional science goals at Saturn and Enceladus are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Although Mars is a favored target for planetary exploration, there is still a need for complementary ground-based observing programs of the Martian atmosphere, and this need will remain in the future. Indeed, as the atmosphere is very tenuous (less than 0.01 bar at the surface), the lines are very narrow and a high spectral resolving power (above 104) is required over large spectral intervals. In addition, ground-based observations of Mars allow the instantaneous mapping of the whole planet, and thus the study of diurnal effects, which cannot be achieved from an orbiter. Recent ground-based achievements about the Martian atmospheric science include the first detection of H2O2 in the submillimeter range, the measurement of winds from CO millimetric transitions, the first detection of CH4 and the O3, H2O2, H2O, and CH4 mapping in the infrared. With an ELT, it will be possible to study at high spatial resolution transient atmospheric phenomena and to search for traces of minor constituents with unprecedented sensitivity. With ALMA, it will be also possible to search for minor species and to map the mesospheric winds for better constraining the climate models.  相似文献

We have observed about 16 absorption lines of the ν2 SO2 vibrational band on Io, in disk-integrated 19-μm spectra taken with the TEXES high spectral resolution mid-infrared spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in November 2001, December 2002, and January 2004. These are the first ground-based infrared observations of Io's sunlit atmosphere, and provide a new window on the atmosphere that allows better longitudinal and temporal monitoring than previous techniques. Dramatic variations in band strength with longitude are seen that are stable over at least a 2 year period. The depth of the strongest feature, a blend of lines centered at 530.42 cm−1, varies from about 7% near longitude 180° to about 1% near longitude 315° W, as measured at a spectral resolution of 57,000. Interpretation of the spectra requires modeling of surface temperatures and atmospheric density across Io's disk, and the variation in non-LTE ν2 vibrational temperature with altitude, and depends on the assumed atmospheric and surface temperature structure. About half of Io's 19-μm radiation comes from the Sun-heated surface, and half from volcanic hot spots with temperatures primarily between 150 and 200 K, which occupy about 8% of the surface. The observations are thus weighted towards the atmosphere over these low-temperature hot spots. If we assume that the atmosphere over the hot spots is representative of the atmosphere elsewhere, and that the atmospheric density is a function of latitude, the most plausible interpretation of the data is that the equatorial atmospheric column density varies from about 1.5×1017 cm−2 near longitude 180° W to about 1.5×1016 cm−2 near longitude 300° W, roughly consistent with HST UV spectroscopy and Lyman-α imaging. The inferred atmospheric kinetic temperature is less than about 150 K, at least on the anti-Jupiter hemisphere where the bands are strongest, somewhat colder than inferred from HST UV spectroscopy and millimeter-wavelength spectroscopy. This longitudinal variability in atmospheric density correlates with the longitudinal variability in the abundance of optically thick, near-UV bright SO2 frost. However it is not clear whether the correlation results from volcanic control (regions of large frost abundance result from greater condensation of atmospheric gases supported by more vigorous volcanic activity in these regions) or sublimation control (regions of large frost abundance produce a more extensive atmosphere due to more extensive sublimation). Comparison of data taken in 2001, 2002, and 2004 shows that with the possible exception of longitudes near 180° W between 2001 and 2002, Io's atmospheric density does not appear to decrease as Io recedes from the Sun, as would be expected if the atmosphere were supported by the sublimation of surface frost, suggesting that the atmosphere is dominantly supported by direct volcanic supply rather than by frost sublimation. However, other evidence such as the smooth variation in atmospheric abundance with latitude, and atmospheric changes during eclipse, suggest that sublimation support is more important than volcanic support, leaving the question of the dominant atmospheric support mechanism still unresolved.  相似文献

This paper deals with two common problems and then considers major aspects of chemistry in the atmospheres of Mars and Venus. (1) The atmospheres of the terrestrial planets have similar origins but different evolutionary pathways because of the different masses and distances to the Sun. Venus lost its water by hydrodynamic escape, Earth lost CO2 that formed carbonates and is strongly affected by life, Mars lost water in the reaction with iron and then most of the atmosphere by the intense meteorite impacts. (2) In spite of the higher solar radiation on Venus, its thermospheric temperatures are similar to those on Mars because of the greater gravity acceleration and the higher production of O by photolysis of CO2. O stimulates cooling by the emission at 15 μm in the collisions with CO2. (3) There is a great progress in the observations of photochemical tracers and minor constituents on Mars in the current decade. This progress is supported by progress in photochemical modeling, especially by photochemical GCMs. Main results in these areas are briefly discussed. The problem of methane presents the controversial aspects of its variations and origin. The reported variations of methane cannot be explained by the existing data on gas-phase and heterogeneous chemistry. The lack of current volcanism, SO2, and warm spots on Mars favor the biological origin of methane. (4) Venus’ chemistry is rich and covers a wide range of temperatures and pressures and many species. Photochemical models for the middle atmosphere (58-112 km), for the nighttime atmosphere and night airglow at 80-130 km, and the kinetic model for the lower atmosphere are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The EUV (200–911 Å), FUV (912–1750 Å), and NUV (1750–3200 Å) spectral energy distribution of exoplanet host stars has a profound influence on the atmospheres of Earth-like planets in the habitable zone. The stellar EUV radiation drives atmospheric heating, while the FUV (in particular, Lyα) and NUV radiation fields regulate the atmospheric chemistry: the dissociation of H2O and CO2, the production of O2 and O3, and may determine the ultimate habitability of these worlds. Despite the importance of this information for atmospheric modeling of exoplanetary systems, the EUV/FUV/NUV radiation fields of cool (K and M dwarf) exoplanet host stars are almost completely unconstrained by observation or theory. We present observational results from a Hubble Space Telescope survey of M dwarf exoplanet host stars, highlighting the importance of realistic UV radiation fields for the formation of potential biomarker molecules, O2 and O3. We conclude by describing preliminary results on the characterization of the UV time variability of these sources.  相似文献

Within several days of A. Wesley’s announcement that Jupiter was hit by an object on UT 19 July 2009, we observed the impact site with (1) the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at UV through visible (225–924 nm) wavelengths, (2) the 10-m W.M. Keck II telescope in the near-infrared (1–5 μm), and (3) the 8-m Gemini-North telescope in the mid-infrared (7.7–18 μm). All observations reported here were obtained between 22 and 25 July 2009. Observations at visible and near-infrared wavelengths show that large (~0.75-μm radius) dark (imaginary index of refraction mi  0.01–0.1) particulates were deposited at atmospheric pressures between 10 and 200–300 mbar; analysis of HST-UV data reveals that in addition smaller-sized (~0.1 μm radius) material must have been deposited at the highest altitudes (~10 mbar). Differences in morphology between the UV and visible/near-IR images suggest three-dimensional variations in particle size and density across the impact site, which probably were induced during the explosion and associated events. At mid-infrared wavelengths the brightness temperature increased due to both an enhancement in the stratospheric NH3 gas abundance and the physical temperature of the atmosphere. This high brightness temperature coincides with the center part of the impact site as seen with HST. This observation, combined with (published) numerical simulations of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts on Jupiter and the Tunguska airburst on Earth, suggests that the downward jet from the terminal explosion probably penetrated down to the ~700-mbar level.  相似文献

We present an updated model for the photochemistry of Io's atmosphere and ionosphere and use this model to investigate the sensitivity of the chemical structure to vertical transport rates. SO2is assumed to be the dominant atmospheric gas, with minor molecular sodium species such as Na2S or Na2O released by sputtering or venting from the surface. Photochemical products include SO, O2, S, O, Na, NaO, NaS, and Na2. We consider both “thick” and “thin” SO2atmospheres that encompass the range allowed by recent HST and millimeter-wave observations, and evaluate the possibility that O2and/or SO may be significant minor dayside constituents and therefore likely dominant nightside gases. The fast reaction between S and O2limits the column abundance of O2to ∼104less than that calculated by Kumar (J. Geophys. Res.87, 1677–1684, 1982; 89(A9), 7399–7406, 1984) for a pure sulfur/oxygen atmosphere. If a significant source of NaO2or Na2O were supplied by the surface and mixed rapidly upward, then oxygen liberated in the chemical reactions which also liberate free Na would provide an additional source of O2. Fast eddy mixing will enhance the transport of molecular sodium species to the exobase, in addition to increasing the vertical transport rate of ions. Ions produced in the atmosphere will be accelerated by the reduced corotation electric field penetrating the atmosphere. These ions experience collisions with the neutral gas, leading to enhanced vertical ion diffusion. The dominant ion, Na+, is lost primarily by charge exchange with Na2O and/or Na2S in the lower atmosphere and by diffusion through the ionopause in the upper atmosphere. The atmospheric column abundance of SO, O2, and the upper atmosphere escape rates of Na, S, O, and molecular sodium species are all strong functions of the eddy mixing rate. Most atmospheric escape, including that of molecular sodium species, probably occurs from the low density “background” SO2atmosphere, while a localized high density “volcanic” SO2atmosphere can yield an ionosphere consistent with that detected by the Pioneer 10 spacecraft.  相似文献

Profile variations in the \(\hbox {H}\alpha \) and \(\hbox {H}\beta \) lines in the spectra of the star HD14134 are investigated using observations carried out in 2013–2014 and 2016 with the 2-m telescope at the Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory. The absorption and emission components of the \(\hbox {H}\alpha \) line are found to disappear on some observational days, and two of the spectrograms exhibit inverse P-Cyg profile of \(\hbox {H}\alpha \). It was revealed that when the \(\hbox {H}\alpha \) line disappeared or an inversion of the P-Cyg-type profile is observed in the spectra, the \(\hbox {H}\beta \) line is displaced to the longer wavelengths, but no synchronous variabilities were observed in other spectral lines (CII \( \lambda \) 6578.05 Å, \( \lambda \) 6582.88 Å  and HeI \( \lambda \) 5875.72 Å) formed in deeper layers of the stellar atmosphere. In addition, the profiles of the \(\hbox {H}\alpha \) and \(\hbox {H}\beta \) lines have been analysed, as well as their relations with possible expansion, contraction and mixed conditions of the atmosphere of HD14134. We suggest that the observational evidence for the non-stationary atmosphere of HD14134 can be associated in part with the non-spherical stellar wind.  相似文献

The rise of atmospheric O3 as a function of the evolution of O2 has been investigated using a one-dimensional steady-state photochemical model based on the chemistry and photochemistry of Ox(O3, O, O(1D)), N2O, NOx(NO, NO2, HNO3), H2O, and HOx(H, OH, HO2, H2O2) including the effect of vertical eddy transport on the species distribution. The total O3 column density was found to maximize for an O2 level of 10?1 present atmospheric level (PAL) and exceeded the present total O3 column by about 40%. For that level of O2, surface and tropospheric O3 densities exceeded those of the present atmosphere by about an order of magnitude. Surface and tropospheric OH densities of the paleoatmosphere exceeded those of the present atmosphere by orders of magnitude. We also found that in the O2-deficient paleoatmosphere, N2O (even at present atmospheric levels) produces much less NOx than it does in the present atmosphere.  相似文献
