Riming growth of ice particles is simulated by numerically solving the stochastic collection equations, simultaneously considering coagulation of water droplets. By introducing a special criterion which defines the habit of a riming particle, the influence of this habit on the growth of several kinds of ice particles assumed to be formed during riming was investigated.It was found that (i) hexagonal rimed ice plates are growing more efficiently than lump graupel or rimed columns, (ii) the use of different collection kernels for the lump graupel evolution leads to widely differing results and that (iii) the time dependent decrease of liquid water substance and the size of the resulting ice particles were more strongly influenced by the initial ice crystal concentration than by the initial ice crystal size and the habit of the ice particles. By decreasing the number density of ice crystals gradually a critical ice crystal concentration was found at which the present liquid water was not completely consumed by the riming process even after 1800 s model time, causing large drops of radii >100 m to be formed in appreciable concentrations.  相似文献

An ice microphysics parameterization scheme has been modified to better describe and understand ice fog formation. The modeling effort is based on observations in the Sub-Arctic Region of Interior Alaska, where ice fog occurs frequently during the cold season due to abundant water vapor sources and strong inversions existing near the surface at extremely low air temperatures. The microphysical characteristics of ice fog are different from those of other ice clouds, implying that the microphysical processes of ice should be changed in order to generate ice fog particles. Ice fog microphysical characteristics were derived with the NCAR Video Ice Particle Sampler during strong ice fog cases in the vicinity of Fairbanks, Alaska, in January and February 2012. To improve the prediction of ice fog in the Weather Research and Forecasting model, observational data were used to change particle size distribution properties and gravitational settling rates, as well as to implement a homogeneous freezing process. The newly implemented homogeneous freezing process compliments the existing heterogeneous freezing scheme and generates a higher number concentration of ice crystals than the original Thompson scheme. The size distribution of ice crystals is changed into a Gamma distribution with the shape factor of 2.0, using the observed size distribution. Furthermore, gravitational settling rates are reduced for the ice crystals since the crystals in ice fog do not precipitate in a similar manner when compared to the ice crystals of cirrus clouds. The slow terminal velocity plays a role in increasing the time scale for the ice crystals to settle to the surface. Sensitivity tests contribute to understanding the effects of water vapor emissions as an anthropogenic source on the formation of ice fog.  相似文献

Key processes influencing the aggregation of volcanic ash and hydrometeors are examined with an experimental method employing vibratory pan aggregation. Mechanisms of aggregation in the presence of hail and ice pellets, liquid water (≤30?wt%), and mixed water phases are investigated at temperatures of 18 and ?20?°C. The experimentally generated aggregates, examined in hand sample, impregnated thin sections, SEM imagery, and X-ray microtomography, closely match natural examples from phreatomagmatic phases of the 27?ka Oruanui and 2010 Eyjafjallaj?kull eruptions. Laser diffraction particle size analysis of parent ash and aggregates is also used to calculate the first experimentally derived aggregation coefficients that account for changing liquid water contents and subzero temperatures. These indicate that dry conditions (<5–10?wt% liquid) promote strongly size selective collection of sub-63?μm particles into aggregates (given by aggregation coefficients >1). In contrast, liquid-saturated conditions (>15–20?wt% liquid) promote less size selective processes. Crystalline ice was also capable of preferentially selecting volcanic ash <31?μm under liquid-free conditions in a two-stage process of electrostatic attraction followed by ice sintering. However, this did not accumulate more than a monolayer of ash at the ice surface. These quantitative relationships may be used to predict the timescales and characteristics of aggregation, such as aggregate size spectra, densities, and constituent particle size characteristics, when the initial size distribution and water content of a volcanic cloud are known. The presence of an irregularly shaped, millimeter-scale vacuole at the center of natural aggregates was also replicated during interaction of ash and melting ice pellets, followed by sublimation. Fine-grained rims were formed by adding moist aggregates to a dry mixture of sub-31?μm ash, which adhered by electrostatic forces and sparse liquid bridges. From this, we infer that the fine-grained outer layers of natural aggregates reflect recycled exposure of moist aggregates to regions of volcanic clouds that are relatively dry and dominated by <31?μm ash.  相似文献

Many environmental pollution issues from highway runoff increasingly become a serious concern, which has been revealed by many previous studies. However, very less information is available on the distribution characteristics of pollutants and their mutual influence in highway runoff. In this paper, the partitioning of pollutant and particle size distribution were investigated based on the initial road runoff of 47 rainfall events from July 2007 to May 2009 on the Lukou section of the Nanjing Airport Expressway, China. This study is emphasizing on the analysis of the mutual impact of pollutant distribution and the relationship between particle size and pollutant distribution. The impact of rainfall characteristics, water temperature, and pH values in runoff samples on the pollutant distribution was also studied. Result shows that partitioning of different pollutants was varying significantly. Volume of particles in different sizes was different, with the highest volume of particles of 21–75 µm size. The distribution of COD highly affected the distribution of TN, and somewhat promoted the distribution of Pb in particles. TP, Pb, and Cd promoted distribution of each other's in particles. There was better competition among Zn, Cu, and Cd, when heavy metals combined with particles. The particles ranged between 21 and 75 µm size had an obvious impact on the distribution of COD, Pb, and TN in the particulate matter. TP in the particulate matter mainly distributed in particles ranged in 151–300 µm size. Rainfall duration significantly affected the Pb in particulate matter. The distribution of Zn in the particulate matter mostly was affected by pH values.  相似文献

The particle size distribution and incidence of spherical, glassy particles commonly found in lunar samples has been determined from Apollo 12 surface samples of fine dust. Some of the spherical particles are hollow and this aspect has also been investigated. The atomisation process by which these particles were probably formed is described and the known physics of this phenomenon is used to define the conditions under which the particles were formed. Other physical limitations are also discussed in order to explain the measured particle size.  相似文献

The morphology, grain size characteristics and composition of ash particles in 30 ka to 150 ka tephra layers from the Byrd ice core were examined to characterize the eruptions which produced them and to test the suggestion that they were erupted from Mt. Takahe, a shield volcano in Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica. Volcanic deposits at Mt. Takahe were examined for evidence of recent activity which could correlate with the tephra layers in the ice core.Coarse- and fine-ash layers have been recognized in the Byrd ice core. The coarse-ash layers have a higher mass concentration than the fine-ash layers and are characterized by fresh glass shards > 50 μm diameter, many containing elongate pipe vesicles. The fine-ash layers have a lower mass concentration and contain a greater variety of particles, typically < 20 μm diameter. Many of these particles are aggregate grains composed of glass and crystal fragments showing S and Cl surface alteration. The grain-size distributions of the coarse and fine-ash layers overlap, in part because of the aggregate nature of grains in the fine-ash layers. The coarse-ash layers are interpreted as having formed by magmatic eruption whereas the fine-ash layers are believed to be hydrovolcanic in origin.Mt. Takahe is the favored source for the tephra because: (a) chemical analyses of samples from the volcano are distinctive, being peralkaline trachyte, and similar in composition to the analyzed tephra; (b) Mt. Takahe is a young volcano (< 0.3 Ma); (c) pyroclastic deposits on Mt. Takahe indicate styles of eruption similar to that inferred for the ice core tephra; and (d) Mt. Takahe is only about 350 km from the calculated site of tephra deposition.A speculative eruptive history for Mt. Takahe is established by combining observations from Mt. Takahe and the Byrd ice core tephra. Initial eruptions at Mt. Takahe were subglacial and then graded into alternating subaerial and subglacial activity. The tephra suggest alternating subaerial magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions from 30 to 20 ka B.P., followed by a sustained period of hydrovolcanic eruptions from 20 to 14 ka B.P., which peaked at 18 ka B.P.  相似文献

Volcanic ash, generated in the long-lived eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat, is shown to contain respirable (sub-4 μm) particles and cristobalite, a crystalline silica polymorph. Respirable particles of cristobalite can cause silicosis, raising the possibility that volcanic ash is a respiratory health hazard. This study considers some of the main factors which affect human exposure to respirable volcanic ash, namely, the composition and proportions of respirable ash, and the composition and concentrations of airborne suspended particulates. The composition, size distribution and proportion (by weight) of respirable particles in representative samples of the Soufrière Hills tephra (dome-collapse ash-fall deposits, dome-collapse pyroclastic-flow matrix, Vulcanian explosion ash and mixed ash) have been characterized. Dome-collapse ash-fall deposits are significantly richer in respirable particles (12 wt%) than the other tephra samples, in particular the matrices of dome-collapse pyroclastic-flow deposits (3 wt%). Within the respirable fraction, dome-collapse ash contains the highest proportion of crystalline silica particles (20–27 number%, of which 97 wt% is cristobalite), compared with other primary tephra types (0.4–5.6 number%). This enrichment of crystalline silica in the dome-collapse ash is most pronounced in the very fine particle fraction (sub-2 μm). The results are explained as being due to significant size fractionation during fragmentation of pyroclastic flows, resulting in a fines-depleted dome-collapse matrix and a fines-rich dome-collapse ash deposit. For all sample types, the sub-4 μm fraction comprises 45–55 wt% of the sub-10 μm fraction. Aeolian deposit, lahar deposit and airborne samples of suspended ash, collected on filters, were characterized. These samples show enrichment of crystalline silica in the respirable fraction (10–18 number%). The results are consistent with ash in the environment having a mixed origin but originating predominantly from dome-collapse eruptions. The reworked ash, however, contains low proportions of respirable ash (~3 wt%) compared to primary ash samples. The concentration of ash particles re-suspended by road vehicles on Montserrat is found to decrease exponentially with height above the ground, indicating higher exposure for children compared with adults: PM4 concentration at 0.9 m (height of two-year-old child) is 3 times that at 1.8 m (adult height). The composition of the re-suspended road particles is similar to that re-suspended by the wind.  相似文献

This work examines the first season of polar mesospheric cloud (PMC) observations from the Solar Occultation for Ice Experiment (SOFIE). SOFIE observations of temperature, water vapor, and PMC frequency, mass density, particle shape, and size distribution are used to characterize the seasonal evolution and altitude dependence of mesospheric ice and the surrounding environment. SOFIE indicates that ice is nearly always present during summer, and that the ice layer is continuous from about 81 km altitude to the mesopause and above. Ice particles are observed to be more aspherical above and below the extinction peak altitude, suggesting a relationship between particle shape and mass density. The smallest particles are observed near the top of the ice layer while the largest particles exist at low concentrations near cloud base. A strong correlation was found between water vapor and particle size with small particles existing when H2O is low. This relationship holds when examining variability in altitude, and variability over time at one altitude.  相似文献

The impact of contrail-induced cirrus clouds on regional climate is estimated for mean atmospheric conditions of southern Germany in the months of July and October. This is done by use of a regionalized one-dimensional radiative convective model (RCM). The influence of an increased ice cloud cover is studied by comparing RCM results representing climatological values with a modified case. In order to study the sensitivity of this effect on the radiative characteristics of the ice cloud, two types of additional ice clouds were modelled: cirrus and contrails, the latter cloud type containing a higher number of smaller and less of the larger cloud particles. Ice cloud parameters are calculated on the basis of a particle size distribution which covers the range from 2 to 2000 m, taking into consideration recent measurements which show a remarkable amount of particles smaller than 20 m. It turns out that a 10% increase in ice cloud cover leads to a surface temperature increase in the order of 1K, ranging from 1.1 to 1.2K in July and from 0.8 to 0.9K in October depending on the radiative characteristics of the air-traffic-induced ice clouds. Modelling the current contrail cloud cover which is near 0.5% over Europe yields a surface temperature increase in the order of 0.05 K.  相似文献

The composition and distribution of particles of native iron in eight sections of the Cretaceous-Danian sediments in the Caucasus, Crimea and Kopet Dagh were studied using thermomagnetic analysis up to 800°C. Iron particles are found in 330 of 571 tested samples, their percentage varies from 10−5 to 0.05%, and their distribution is bimodal. It was established that the Santonian sediments of the Caucasus and Kara-Kala are enriched with the iron particles; the upper boundary of these sediments is marked by a sharp drop in the iron content at approximately 84 Ma, which coincides with the upper boundary of the Dzhalal hyperchron. The variations in the Curie point of iron from 680°C up to 780°C reflect the fluctuations of the nickel admixture. A peak of the elevated iron content with nearly constant nickel of 5% was found in all studied sections, i.e., this is a global effect. The global pattern of the distribution and composition of the iron particles clearly indicates that their origin is associated with cosmic dust. At the same time, the particles of Ni-Fe alloy and pure nickel are very rare, and their concentration does not correlate with the content of iron particles. Apparently, there are very few Ni-Fe and pure nickel particles in cosmic dust, and, most likely, the particles of Ni-Fe alloy are mainly due to impact events.  相似文献

基于尘埃等离子体Mie-Debye散射模型,研究平衡态下尘埃等离子体中带电尘埃的电磁散射特性.根据输运理论计算高层大气环境中尘埃等离子体层的电磁散射场,给出电磁波垂直入射时尘埃等离子体层的反射函数,同时分析不同浓度、不同粒径分布状态下尘埃等离子体层对电磁波传播的影响.结果表明:尘埃粒子尺度对其电磁散射特性影响非常大;在对数正态分布情况下,当入射波长远大于Debye半径时,尘埃等离子体的散射主要表现为Debye散射,而入射波长远小于Debye半径时,Mie散射占主要部分;并且尘埃等离子体层对电磁波的衰减随尘埃粒子浓度以及尘埃粒子半径的增大而明显增强.  相似文献

The combination of magnetic and geochemical methods was used to determine the mineralogy, grain size and domain structure of magnetic particles in indoor dust collected in 195 sites in Warsaw, Poland. Data show an asymmetric distribution of magnetic susceptibility (χ) in the wide range of 20–1514 × 10?8 m3 kg?1. Comparison of magnetic parameters shows that the internal dust contains outside pollution characteristic for air and soil. More than 90% of indoor dust samples were characterized by roughly uniform magnetic mineralogy, typical for fine grained magnetite (diameter of 0.2–5 μm), and grain size between pseudo-single-domain and small multi-domain with small contribution of superpara-magnetic particles (~10%). Samples with χ larger than 220 × 10?8 m3 kg?1 contain mainly magnetite and an anthropogenic metallic Fe with T C > 700°C. The indoor dust contains, characteristic for the urban areas, spherical magnetic particles originated from fossil fuel combustion processes and mixture of irregular angular iron-oxides grains containing other elements, including Na, Ca, Al, Si, K, S, Mn, Cl, and Mg.  相似文献

A torn-up road offered the opportunity to sample a dust cloud continuously at different heights during a time interval of 51 hours. In particular the granulometrical characteristics of the dust caught were investigated. It appears that if the air layer in the vicinity of a dust cloud is not too turbulent, the cloud will be clearly granulometrically stratified. The coarse material moves chiefly at the bottom of the cloud, whereas the fine material will occur both at the bottom and at the top. The experiment also shows that the higher the dust in the cloud, the worse it is sorted. Above a critical height, however, the degree of sorting increases again. The variation of the mean dust diameter d50, as a function of the height z, can be expressed in a simple semi-logarithmic equation. The variation of the dust quantity G, as a function of the height z, can also be expressed in a semi-logarithmic form but the correlation is higher when a power equation is used. The ratio of fine silt to coarse silt seems to vary parabolically with height. One can only speak of an optimal transport height in the case of particles > 16 μm. For finer particles, the turbulence of a normal air stream is usually high enough to carry the particles anywhere in the dust cloud, so that one can no longer speak of an optimal transport height. The granulometrical border between aeolian transport in saltation and aeolian transport in suspension lies, according to the results of the experiment, at a diameter of about 63 μm.  相似文献

The size distribution of suspended particles in Lake Zürich water shows always the same shape, irrespective of the total concentration of particles, depth or season. The particle size distribution can be described by a function of the form $$\frac{{\Delta {\rm N}(d_p )}}{{\Delta d_p }} = n(d_p ) = {\rm A}d_p^{ - m} $$ where N (dp)=concentration of particles with diameters between dp and dp+Δdp [cm?3], dp=particle diameter [μm], A=constant of the particle size distribution, n(dp)=particle size distribution function. m was found to be about 3.5. Model calculations show that coagulation determines the particle size distribution. The lake model consists in three completely mixed parts: the epilimnion, the thermocline and the hypolimnion. The effect of outflow of particles by a river, sedimentation and coagulation on the particle size distribution were investigated.  相似文献

北天山泥火山位于新疆天山北麓山前拗陷带内,均处在背斜褶皱的轴部。在了解泥火山的地质背景、活动现状的基础上,对该区泥火山进行了详细的野外考察,对所采样品进行粒度、显微形貌及成分分析。研究发现:该区域的泥火山样品粒径主要集中在0.3~100μm,平均值相近,分选较差,分布对称性呈极正偏。矿物颗粒以石英、长石为主,基质为黏土矿物,白杨沟和艾其沟样品中均含有铁矿物质。根据上述分析结果对北天山泥火山成因机制进行了初步探讨,认为该区域的泥火山物源相同,泥浆最深来源于下中侏罗统,地层压力以构造活动为主。目前泥火山处于弱活动期,短期内造成较大灾害的可能性很小。  相似文献

Thorium isotopes in the airborne dust collected at Tsukuba Science City in Japan from January 1981 to December 1982 show clear seasonal variations. Especially228Th in the airborne particles have a typical maximum cincentration between February and April, which is about an order of magnitude higher than during the remainder of the year. According to the result of size distribution of thorium isotope-bearing particles in the air, about 53% of228Th is associated with the particles less than 1.6 μm aerodynamic diameter. These results reveal that228Th in the airborne particles is present in fine soily matters originating from the East Asian deserts.  相似文献

Magnetic signature of different vegetation species in polluted environment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Detailed magnetic study on vegetation samples from several strongly polluted and clean sites in Bulgaria is carried out in order to evaluate suitability of different species as passive dust collectors in magnetometry. From each location, available species among lichens, mosses, poplar leaves, dandelion, needles have been sampled. Magnetic susceptibility calculated on mass-specific basis shows wide variability between diamagnetic signal up to 846 × 10−8 m3/kg. Lichens and mosses are found to be the species, showing magnetic signals with the strongest contrast between clean and polluted environment. The main magnetic phase is magnetite-like according to the results from thermomagnetic analysis of susceptibility on magnetic extracts. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) microphotographs reveal the presence of abundant particulate matter on vegetation surface both with anthropogenic (spherules) and lithogenic origin. Magnetic grain size deduced by the ratio of saturation remanent magnetization (SIRM) and mass-specific magnetic susceptibility (χ) and coercivities (Bc and Bcr) suggest that different species accumulate preferentially small SD-like grains from pollution emissions. Contrasting relationship of the ratio of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) and χ for polluted vs clean sites deduced by needles and lichens may be related to transformation of the accumulated dust particles within lichens’ tissue. This finding indicates that the exact species used as biological dust collector is of importance when studying spatial grain size distribution of magnetic dust particles. Pilot study on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) content and its relation to magnetic parameters shows good correspondence between high levels of PAHs and high SIRM values for locations affected by non-ferrous industrial production.  相似文献
