We propose a criterion for extending the parameter search method (Krishnakumar and Venkatakrishnan, 1997) of estimating the point spread function to solar data. In the parameter search method, the number of pixels with negative intensity values in the restored object is used as an estimator for determining the unknown parameters of the point spread function. As a solar image has a high background, the restored object does not contain negative values, thereby making the method unsuitable for solar data. We propose to use the intrinsic contrast of solar features as a criterion for identifying the unknown parameter. We validate our method through simulations. This method can not be used for image restoration but can be used for monitoring daytime seeing.  相似文献

Interferometric calibration always yields non unique solutions. It is therefore essential to remove these ambiguities before the solutions could be used in any further modeling of the sky, the instrument or propagation effects such as the ionosphere. We present a method for LOFAR calibration which does not yield a unitary ambiguity, especially under ionospheric distortions. We also present exact ambiguities we get in our solutions, in closed form. Casting this as an optimization problem, we also present conditions for this approach to work. The proposed method enables us to use the solutions obtained via calibration for further modeling of instrumental and propagation effects. We provide extensive simulation results on the performance of our method. Moreover, we also give cases where due to degeneracy, this method fails to perform as expected and in such cases, we suggest exploiting diversity in time, space and frequency.  相似文献

Finding outlier light curves in catalogues of periodic variable stars   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We present a methodology to discover outliers in catalogues of periodic light curves. We use a cross-correlation as the measure of 'similarity' between two individual light curves, and then classify light curves with lowest average 'similarity' as outliers. We performed the analysis on catalogues of periodic variable stars of known type from the MACHO and OGLE projects. This analysis was carried out in Fourier space and we established that our method correctly identifies light curves that do not belong to those catalogues as outliers. We show how an approximation to this method, carried out in real space, can scale to large data sets that will be available in the near future such as those anticipated from the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) and Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).  相似文献

We present a method to construct a mapping for perturbed systems, in which the perturbations do not need to be conservative. We use a variation of Wisdom and Holman's method, where the dissipative term is placed together with the other perturbative terms. The method is applied for two dissipative systems: one including gas drag and the other including Poynting-Robertson drag. We compare the results with those obtained by Malhotra's mapping. Because the dissipative part in our method is treated as a regular perturbative term, there is no need for analytical developments of the nonconservative terms. This is a great advantage in itself and this also allows for a fast performance of the integrator.  相似文献

We developed two approximations of the Newton-Raphson method. The one is a sort of discretization, namely to search an approximate solution on pre-specified grid points. The other is a Taylor series expansion. A combination of these was applied to solving Kepler's equation for the elliptic case. The resulting method requires no evaluation of transcendental functions. Numerical measurements showed that, in the case of Intel Pentium processor, the new method is three times as fast as the original Newton-Raphson method. Also it is more than 2.5 times as fast as Halley's method, Nijenhuis's method, and others.  相似文献

We propose and test new statistical tools to study the distribution of cosmic rays based on the use of the minimal spanning tree. The method described is particularly sensitive to filamentary structures, as those expected to arise from strong sources of charged cosmic rays which get deflected by intervening magnetic fields. We also test the method with data available from the AGASA and SUGAR surface detector arrays.  相似文献

We describe an automated method for assigning the most likely physical parameters to the components of an eclipsing binary (EB), using only its photometric light curve and combined color. In traditional methods (e.g. WD and EBOP) one attempts to optimize a multi-parameter model over many iterations, so as to minimize the chi-squared value. We suggest an alternative method, where one selects pairs of coeval stars from a set of theoretical stellar models, and compares their simulated light curves and combined colors with the observations. This approach greatly reduces the EB parameter-space over which one needs to search, and allows one to determine the components' masses, radii and absolute magnitudes, without spectroscopic data. We have implemented this method in an automated program using published theoretical isochrones and limb-darkening coefficients. Since it is easy to automate, this method lends itself to systematic analyses of datasets consisting of photometric time series of large numbers of stars, such as those produced by OGLE, MACHO, TrES, HAT, and many others surveys.  相似文献

We apply our sky map reconstruction method for transit type interferometers to the Tianlai cylinder array.The method is based on spherical harmonic decomposition,and can be applied to a cylindrical array as well as dish arrays and we can compute the instrument response,synthesized beam,transfer function and noise power spectrum.We consider cylinder arrays with feed spacing larger than half a wavelength and,as expected,we find that the arrays with regular spacing have grating lobes which produce spurious images in the reconstructed maps.We show that this problem can be overcome using arrays with a different feed spacing on each cylinder.We present the reconstructed maps,and study the performance in terms of noise power spectrum,transfer function and beams for both regular and irregular feed spacing configurations.  相似文献

We present a method for solving problems in which a stellar wind interacts with the surrounding environment through the production of a 'double radiative shock' structure. This condition is generally met in problems involving winds ejected from young stars. We describe a method that can be applied to problems of winds with arbitrary time and angular dependence, interacting with a stationary environment with an arbitrary density distribution. We apply the method to the interaction of: a steady wind (with an instantaneous 'turning-on') with a power-law environmental density stratification, a 'wind plus jet' ejection with a toroidal environmental density stratification, and to the interaction of an isotropic wind with a clumpy environment. These three examples illustrate the wide range of possible applications of the proposed method. We also show a comparison between some of our thin-shell solutions and three-dimensional isothermal gasdynamic simulations of the flows. These comparisons are used as an evaluation of the applicability of our thin-shell solutions to the real flows.  相似文献

We describe a method which uses a rather detailed model of coronal loop hosting a siphon flow as a diagnostic tool to interpret solar UV and X-ray observations in selected bands and lines. We apply the method to investigate the deviations from ionization equilibrium induced by stationary plasma flows confined in coronal loops and their effects on the UV and EUV emission lines observed by the instruments on board SOHO. We present results on the detailed synthesis of loop emission in a set of selected emission lines observed by CDS and SUMER, taking into account the non-equilibrium of ionization effects.  相似文献

We have developed a new method to analyse in situ observations of atmospheric variables of state: the reconstruction of the vertical temperature profile from pressure measurements accompanied by rough knowledge of the atmospheric composition and the aerodynamical response properties of the descent vehicle. We can use the method to construct the temperature profile when no direct measurements are available, as well as to analyse the consistency between data from different instruments. We applied the method to the Huygens measurements of Titan's atmosphere, determining the aerodynamical drag properties from radar altimeter data. We discovered that the temperature profile computed in this manner differs from the profile from the temperature sensor (TEM) of the probe by up to 5% in the altitude range of 0–60 km, and up to 10% at higher altitudes due to increased noise. The method gives a tropopause altitude of about 50 km and a surface temperature of about 98 K, in contrast to the TEM temperature measurements. Our error analysis shows that these differences are caused by the known discrepancy in the Huygens altimeter data, with the estimates made by the reconstruction algorithm contributing only 1–2% of error.  相似文献

The method of singular spectral analysis (SSA) is described and used to analyze the series of Wolf numbers that characterizes solar activity from 1748 until 1996. Since this method is relatively new, we detail its algorithm as applied to the data under study. We examine the advantages and disadvantages of the SSA method and the conditions for its applicability to an analysis of the solar-activity data. Certain regularities have been found in the dynamics of this series. Both short and long (80–100-year) periodicities have been revealed in the sunspot dynamics. We investigate whether it is possible to overcome the limitations on the efficient application of Fourier-component phase accumulation method. We suggest the use of an instrument with a composite aperture for observation. It is shown that, in this case, the limitations are shifted as many times as the subaperture’s size is less than the typical size of atmospheric inhomogeneities. The interferograms obtained by means of a multibeam interpherometer are processed with the help of the total phase accumulation method using a computer model and the results are presented in the paper.  相似文献

Secondary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) can be detected by using the cross-correlation between the large-scale structure (LSS) and the CMB temperature fluctuations. In such studies, chance correlations of primordial CMB fluctuations with the LSS are the main source of uncertainty. We present a method for reducing this noise by exploiting information contained in the polarization of CMB photons. The method is described in general terms and then applied to our recently proposed optimal method for measuring the integrated Sachs–Wolfe (ISW) effect. We obtain an expected signal-to-noise ratio of up to 8.5. This corresponds to an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio by 23 per cent as compared to the standard method for ISW detection, and by 16 per cent w.r.t. our recently proposed method, both for the best-case scenario of having perfect (noiseless) CMB and LSS data.  相似文献

We introduce versatile spectral analysis (VESPA): a new method which aims to recover robust star formation and metallicity histories from galactic spectra. VESPA uses the full spectral range to construct a galaxy history from synthetic models. We investigate the use of an adaptative parametrization grid to recover reliable star formation histories on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis. Our goal is robustness as opposed to high-resolution histories, and the method is designed to return high time resolution only where the data demand it. In this paper we detail the method and we present our findings when we apply VESPA to synthetic and real Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic data. We show that the number of parameters that can be recovered from a spectrum depends strongly on the signal-to-noise ratio, wavelength coverage and presence or absence of a young population. For a typical SDSS sample of galaxies, we can normally recover between two and five stellar populations. We find very good agreement between VESPA and our previous analysis of the SDSS sample with MOPED.  相似文献

We introduced a decision tree method called Random Forests for multiwavelength data classification. The data were adopted from different databases, including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release five, USNO, FIRST and ROSAT.We then studied the discrimination of quasars from stars and the classification of quasars,stars and galaxies with the sample from optical and radio bands and with that from optical and X-ray bands. Moreover, feature selection and feature weighting based on Random Forests were investigated. The performances based on different input patterns were compared. The experimental results show that the random forest method is an effective method for astronomical object classification and can be applied to other classification problems faced in astronomy. In addition, Random Forests will show its superiorities due to its own merits, e.g. classification, feature selection, feature weighting as well as outlier detection.  相似文献

We present a new method for analysing multidetector maps containing several astrophysical components. Our method, based on matching the data to a model in the spectral domain, permits us to estimate jointly the spatial power spectra of the components and of the noise, as well as their mixing coefficients. It is of particular relevance for analysis of millimetre-wave maps of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies.  相似文献
