We show that the spectral stability of Hamiltonian equilibria and periodic orbits may be analyzed by the same method. This is accomplished via the Cayley transform, =(+1)/(–1), which maps the unit circle onto the imaginary -axis. The advantages and disadvantages of the new method over previous techniques are elucidated.  相似文献

The paper represents the Earth's gravitational potentialV, outside a sphere bounding the Earth, by means of its difference V from the author's spheroidal potential. The difference V is in turn represented as arising from a surface density on the sphere bounding the Earth. Because of the slow decrease with ordern of the normalized coefficients in the spherical harmonic expansion ofV, the density anomalies from which the higher coefficients arise must occur in regions close to the Earth's surface. The surface density is thus an idealization of the product of the density anomaly and the crustal thicknessb. Values of are computed from potential coefficients obtained from two sources, Rapp and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The two sources give qualitative agreement for the values of and for its contour map. The numerical values obtained for are compatible with the idea that the responsible density anomalies are reasonably small, i.e., less than 0.05 g/cm3, and occur in the crust alone.This paper was prepared under the sponsorship of the Electronics Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration through NASA Grant NGR 22-009-311.  相似文献

The time evolution of the velocity dispersion as a function of radius, called v-profiles, of threeN-body simulations of Wielen are presented in units ofr/R G (whereR G is the gravitational or virial radius) and discussed as a function of mass sample. The evolution of the radial and tangential components of the velocity dispersion is discussed, and each v-profile is fitted to a simple power law in the halo (0.15r/R G2.0). Several structural features appear at late time intervals: (a) an upturn in the radial component of v which occurs in a decreasing shell (closer to the core) in time, (b) the v-profile of the massive particles mimics that of the total sample, since equipartition of kinetic energy does not obtain, and (c) a local minimum atr0.3–0.5R G appears in one model which coincides with the local minimum in the number density profiles and possibly with feature (a).The line-of-sight v-profile, called LS-profile, of each model as a function of time and mass sample are also presented and discussed. They contain the same structural features as the v-profiles. Projection factors at small radii are also discussed. The LS-profiles of the models can be compared with the observed velocity dispersion profiles of clusters of galaxies in Struble (1979a).  相似文献

The Shiva Hypothesis, in which recurrent, cyclical mass extinctions of life on Earth result from impacts of comets or asteroids, provides a possible unification of important processes in astrophysics, planetary geology, and the history of life. Collisions with Earth-crossing asteroids and comets a few km in diameter are calculated to produce widespread environmental disasters (dust clouds, wildfires), and occur with the proper frequency to account for the record of five major mass extinctions (from 108 Mt TNT impacts) and ~ 20 minor mass extinctions (from 107–108 Mt impacts) recorded in the past 540 million years. Recent studies of a number of extinctions show evidence of severe environmental disturbances and mass mortality consistent with the expected after-effects (dust clouds, wildfires) of catastrophic impacts. At least six cases of features generally considered diagnostic of large impacts (e.g., large impact craters, layers with high platinum-group elements, shock-related minerals, and/or microtektites) are known at or close to extinction-event boundaries. Six additional cases of elevated iridium levels at or near extinction boundaries are of the amplitude that might be expected from collision of relatively low-Ir objects such as comets.The records of cratering and mass extinction show a correlation, and might be explained by a combination of periodic and stochastic impactors. The mass extinction record shows evidence for a periodic component of about 26 to 30 Myr, and an ~ 30 Myr periodic component has been detected in impact craters by some workers, with recent pulses of impacts in the last 2–3 million years, and at ~ 35, 65, and 95 million years ago. A cyclical astronomical pacemaker for such pulses of impacts may involve the motions of the Earth through the Milky Way Galaxy. As the Solar System revolves around the galactic center, it also oscillates up and down through the plane of the disk-shaped galaxy with a half-cycle ~ 30±3 Myr. This cycle should lead to quasi-periodic encounters with interstellar clouds, and periodic variations in the galactic tidal force with maxima at times of plane crossing. This galactic carrousel effect may provide a viable perturber of the Oort Cloud comets, producing periodic showers of comets in the inner Solar System. An attempt is made in this paper to determine the coefficient a in a power-law relationship of the form V ~T between the r.m.s. velocity fluctuation, V for raster images with 3 resolution and the temperature, T of line formation using SMM solar data. For T between 8000 and 105 K, the data suggest a best fit with 3/4 < 1. It is argued, however, that unresolved fine structure tends to reduce the observed value of V and that higher resolution data may yield different values for . Skylab data have shown that the non-thermal line broadening velocity, , is proportional to T 1/2. Also, for all temperatures less than 105 K, V . This latter result, however, is again dependent on spatial resolution and may not be true in observations made with sufficient spatial resolution. The magnitudes of both V and indicate that bulk motions play important roles in the structure of the solar atmosphere as well as in its energy and momentum balance. Einstein's equations for a rotating pressure-free space-time are reduced to a system of four first-order non-linear ordinary differential equations in one self-similar dimensionless variable. Numerical results are given for the vacuum solution. A compatible thin disk can be specified by a surface density and an angular velocity . We discuss some fundamental aspects of Earth history as predicted by what has come to be called coherent rather than stochastic catastrophism. The latter essentially seeks to provide an understanding of terrestrial evolution in terms of occasional kilometre-plus impactors from the asteroid belt whereas the former recognises a far more complex extraterrestrial regime arising from the streams of sub-kilometre and kilometre-plus debris due to the disintegration of successive giant comets in sub-Jovian orbits. Periodicities of 15 Myr during the later Phanerozoic (i.e. 250 to 0 Myr BP) and 200 yr during the Holocene (i.e. 10,000 to 0 yr 1313) are likely fundamental signatures in the terrestrial record relating to the action of past and present giant cornets respectively.  相似文献

The object of this paper is to investigate the behavior of a magnetic field in a viscous fluid cosmological model. It has been assumed that the expansion () is proportional to the eigenvalue 1 of the shear tensor i j and the coefficient of shearing viscosity is proportional to the scalar of expansion. Lockwood, Stamper, and Wild (1999) argued that the average strength of the magnetic field of the Sun has doubled in the last 100 years. They used an analysis of the geomagnetic index aa. We calculated the area of polar zones of the Sun, A pz, occupied by unipolar magnetic field on H synoptic magnetic charts, following Makarov (1994), from 1878 to 2000. We found a gradual decrease of the annual minimum latitude of the high-latitude zone boundaries, 2m, of the global magnetic field of the Sun at the minimum of activity from 53° in 1878 down to 38° in 1996, yielding an average decrease of 1.2° per cycle. Consequently the area of polar zones A pz of the Sun, occupied by unipolar magnetic field at the minimum activity, has risen by a factor of 2 during 1878–1996. This means that the behavior of the index aa and consequently the magnetic flux from the Sun may be explained by an increase of the area of polar caps with roughly the same value of the magnetic field in this period. The area of the unipolar magnetic field at the poles (A pz) may be used as a new index of magnetic activity of the Sun. We compared A pz with the aa, the Wolf number W and A* -index (Makarov and Tlatov, 2000). Correlations based on `11-year' averages are discussed. A temperature difference of about 1° between the Maunder Minimum and the present time was deduced. We have found that the highest latitude of the polar zone boundaries of the large-scale magnetic field during very low solar activity reaches about 60°, cf., the Maunder Minimum. It is supposed that the 2m-latitude coincides with the latitude where r=0, with (r,) being the angular frequency of the solar rotation. The causes of the waxing and waning of the Sun's activity in conditions like Maunder Minimum are discussed.  相似文献

Based on EUV observations of eleven sunspot regions obtained with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer, CDS, on SOHO we have studied the spatial distribution, temporal variation and wavelength shift of the Hei 584 line. We find a relatively high spatial correlation between the coronal line Fexvi 360 and the Hei 584 line. This points to coronal back-radiation as an important contributor to the formation of the Hei line in active regions. However, contribution to the line formation from another source is suggested by the following two findings: First, the red-shifted line profiles of both Hei 584 and the transition region lines tend to be more intense than blue-shifted profiles. Second, the Hei 584 emission changes significantly faster than the coronal line emission.  相似文献

We have investigated ROSAT X-ray data of OB stars to search for evidence of time variability in the X-ray emission from early-type stars. As an example for such studies we present a detailed variability analysis for our two program stars Ori and Ori which have been multiply observed with ROSAT. The long-term analysis of both stars now covers a time range of 2.5 years and includes six pointed PSPC observations, an additional pointed HRI observation of Ori and the ROSAT all-sky survey data of both stars. Over a long time range the X-ray light curves of Ori and Ori show no evidence for variability. In the case of Ori we detected a moderate increase in X-ray count rate during a period of 2 days which can be explained as a strong shock propagating in the wind of an O-type star.  相似文献

Theoretical distributions of pulsar dispersion measures (times sinb II) are computed for various assumed pulsar spatial distributions above (and below) the galactic plane, assuming a distribution for the ionized gas. The statistics on the twelve high-latitude pulsars lead to the conclusion that the pulsar distribution inz is at least as broad as the distribution of the ionized gas. The value derived for the local mean interstellar electron density in the galactic plane is 0.12 cm–3 and is interpreted to be due to a uniform ionized intercloud medium.Interstellar absorption of radio waves at low frequencies and cosmic X-rays at low energies are considered with regard to irregularities in the distribution of ionized gas. It is shown that if the obervations are made with a wide angle receiver the effective absorption optical deph is –2/2 where is the mean value and is the dispersion in . This relation assumes is much larger than . Analysis of recent low-frequency radio measurements from a satellite-borne receiver, however, leads to the conclusion that effects of irregulatirities are large.  相似文献

The study of uniformly polytropes with axial symmetry is extended to include all rotational terms of order 4, where is the angular velocity, consistently within the first post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. The equilibrium structure is determined by treating the effects of rotation and post-Newtonian gravitation as independent perturbations on the classical polytropic structure. The perturbation effects are characterized by a rotation parameter = 2/2G c and a relativity parameter, =p c / c C 2 , wherep c and c are the central pressure and density respectively. The solution to the structural problem is obtained by following Chandrasekhar's series expansion technique and is complete to the post-Newtonian rotation terms of order 2. The critical rotation parameterv c , which characterizes the configuration with maximum uniform rotation, is accurately evaluated as a function of . Numerical values for all the structural parameters needed to determine the equilibrium configurations are presented for polytropes with indicesn=1, 1.5, 2, 2 5, 3, and 3.5.  相似文献

Le satellite possède une symétrie dynamique et un moment magnétique propre dirigé suivant l'un des axes principaux d'inertie; le champ magnétique terrestre est assimilé au champ d'un dipôle dont les pôles coïncident avec les pôles terrestres. On néglige les perturbations de la trajectoire du satellite qui est supposée circulaire. La position du satellite par rapport à son centre de gravité est repérée dans un système d'axes lié au plan de l'orbite et le mouvement est décrit à l'aide des angles d'Euler , , . La symétrie sphérique et le choix du moment magnétique sur l'un des axes d'inertie permettent d'éliminer l'angle .La solution pour et peut se développer en séries de puissance d'un petit paramètre . Les séries convergent pour ||<1.Lorsque le moment magnétique est faible on la rotation du satellite rapide, est faible. Les développements sont calculés effectivement jusqu'à 2.La comparaison des résultats avec l'intégration numérique du système d'équations différentielles est satisfaisante.
The effect of the Earth's magnetic field on the motion of a satellite around its centre of mass is investigated. The satellite is assumed to be dynamically symmetric and to be magnetized in the same direction as that of a principal axis. The Earth's magnetic field is assumed to be a dipole field whose poles coincide with the rotation poles of the Earth. The satellite's orbit is circular and perturbations are neglected. The position of the satellite with respect to its centre of mass is given with respect to a coordinate system fixed in the orbital plane and the motion is described by Euler's angles , , . The spherical symmetry and the coincidence of the magnetic moment with a principal axis allow one to eliminate the angle .The solution for and , can be expanded in power series for small parameter .The series converge for <1. is small for a small magnetic moment or a high angular velocity of the rotating satellite. The terms of the expansion of the series are calculated up to 2.The comparison of the results with those obtained by numerical integration of the differential equation is satisfactory.

The Einstein Field Equations for homogeneous cosmologies are considered within the viscosity approximation. It is shown that some power laws T m (whereT is the temperature) for the cross-section lead to collisionless behavior near the initial singularity in a big bang model. The relation between the amplitude of light m and the amplitude of the radial velocity 2K for Canis Majoris stars is investigated. A linear relationship between m and 2K is found. An empirical relation which relates the 408 MHz galactic continuum background temperature (408GCBT) to dispersion measures, position and radio-luminosity of 325 pulsars is obtained by means of multple stepwise regression analysis. This relation showns that pulsars may be considered as galactic probes for the distribution of 408GCBT and interstellar electron density (IED) in interstellar medium (ISM).Peculiar pulsars (O-C±2.5) point out galactic regions where the observedT 408 are higher (or lower) andn e lower (or higher) than the averaged ones.Normal pulsars (–2.5T 408 andn e are in agreement, on, the average.Standard pulsars (O-C±0.05) show galactic regions where observed and computedT 408 andn e are in good agreement. Recent models of pulsar disk systems, suggested by Michel and Dessler (1981) could justify the conclusions drawn for peculiar pulsars having O-C>2.5.  相似文献

The radial and the non-radial (l=2) modes of oscillation of a gaseous polytrope with a toroidal magnetic field are examined using a variational principle. It is found that the frequencies of oscillation of the radial mode and the Kelvin mode (l=2) decrease due to the presence of the magnetic field. The shift in the frequency of the Kelvin mode may be split up into two parts, viz. the shift in frequency due to the magnetic field on the unperturbed sphere [(12)m, say] and the shift in frequency due to the distortion of the structure by the magnetic field [(12)s, say]. In the first order calculations using one parameter trial function, it is found that (12)m is indeed positive but is overweighed by a negative (12)s. In the second order calculations using a trial function with two variational parameters, we find that the general behaviour of (12)m and (12)s is unchanged but that (12)m becomes negative for polytropic indicesn1.5.In Appendix I we study the effect of a small rotation and toroidal magnetic field on the structure of a polytrope. It is found that the resulting configuration is a prolate spheroid, a sphere or an oblate spheroid according as respectively. Here denotes the magnetic energy andT the kinetic energy due to rotation andq is a constant which depends on the polytropic indexn. The values ofq are given in Table I.  相似文献
