Gonyostomum semen is a bloom-forming freshwater raphidophyte that is currently on the increase, which concerns stakeholders and ecologists alike. Much indicates that the success of G. semen is linked to its diel vertical migration (DVM). The DVM was therefore studied in its natural setting using environmental sensors with data logging. DVM happened partly in the absence of light detectable by sensors, suggesting that the DVM involved gravitaxis, although an involvement of phototaxis could not be fully excluded. G. semen migrated downwards the earlier the warmer the water was. The upwards migration showed features of endogenous rhythms, implying that the temporal control of the DVM also has a circadian component that ensures synchronization with the day-night cycle. It is hypothesized that by causing an early descent, exposure to warm water may give G. semen more time to exploit the nutrient-rich lower part of the water column before the circadian control initiates upwards migration. The warming of lakes, caused by global warming or by the more effective conversion of light energy into heat due to the brownification of lakes, may therefore be of advantage to G. semen. In addition, the steep temperature gradient, which is typical for humic lakes during summer stratification, may help avoid the desynchronizing effect that turbulence can have on gravitactic DVMs. Above features of the DVM of G. semen therefore provide putative explanations for why the alga is particularly successful in humic lakes and why it profits from lake brownification and global warming.  相似文献

Microbial biodegradation of organic substances takes place during drinking water treatment, but also in the distribution net, if the drinking water still contains biodegradable organic substances. This phenomenon is called regrowth. The regrowth potential of a drinking water is high, when for instance ozonation is used as the last step of treatment. It was proved before, that ozonation increases the biodegradability of humic substances, which are the main fraction of organic carbon in drinking water. In this work the objective was to check, if chlorination has a similar effect on humic substances. Using the method developed by Werner of measuring the regrowth potential of a water it could be shown by dilution series with chlorinated and unchlorinated humic substances that the substrate quality of these organics is increased by chlorination. The better substrate quality is seen in the chlorinated solutions, which might contain also low molecular weight organic compounds, but also in the fulvic acid fraction after XAD-enrichment, which removes most of the low molecular weight organic compounds. The chlorination creates in the fulvic acid solutions a shift of molecular size to smaller molecules and higher polar substances, which might be the reasons for the better biodegradability. From these results it can be concluded, that chlorination produces substances, which are more easily biodegradable. But this will not produce regrowth problems as long as there is free chlorine present as a disinfectant. In contrast, when the chlorine demand is very high and no free chlorine is left, this might produce high colony counts in the distribution net.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is one of the most abundant fractions of organic matter in aquatic systems and plays an important role in the dynamics of aquatic environments, controlling both the penetration and the underwater light radiation climate. DOC can be photodegraded by light, thus facilitating biodegradation, especially in regions where the incidence of solar radiation is high, such as higher altitudes and lower latitudes. This study quantified the photodegradation of dissolved organic material in a natural tropical lake surrounded by native forests (Brazilian Atlantic Forest) through two experiments: i) the first experiment exposed concentrated autochthonous, allochthonous, and lake water to in situ solar radiation; ii) this experiment also exposed the same organic material to artificial UV radiation in an incubator under controlled conditions. The quality and quantity of dissolved organic carbon were measured using indices based on carbon absorbance and fluorescence spectrum. In the in situ experiment, it was observed that the DOC degradation profile of the concentrated allochthonous and autochthonous organic material were distinct from each other in the absorbance indices, and the lake water mostly resembled the latter one. On the other hand, we did not see evidence of any significant difference among treatments in the laboratory experiment. An increase in the SR index and a concomitant decrease in the fluorescence of humic compounds and SUVA254 over time were observed. In both experiments, the amount of degraded organic material over time was low and some possible explanations are discussed.  相似文献

A combination of sephadex gel-chromatography and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to obtain stable electrophoretic fractions with different molecular sizes from a preparation of humic substances isolated from river water by reverse osmosis. The photochemical activity of humic substances and their fractions was determined. For the first time it is shown that low-molecular fractions of aquatic humic substances, when irradiated by polychromatic light, can intensely fluoresce and initiate the formation of singlet O2, effectively destroying model compound furfural. The photochemical activity and intensity of fluorescence of high-molecular fractions is insignificant. The obtained data will help to extend the current knowledge in the field of natural water hydrochemistry about the ways of its natural self-purification from anthropogenic pollutants.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional fluorescence spectra of water samples from an eucalyptus bleached kraft pulp mill and from a river, upstream and downstream of the discharge of the effluent, revealed the existence of a peak at δexc = 280 nm and δem = 340 nm Δδ = 60 nm), characteristic of effluentπs organic matter. Humic substances were isolated from the effluent by sequential adsorption onto resins XAD‐8 and XAD‐4 in series. Their synchronous fluorescence spectra with Δδ = 60 nm do also exhibit an intense signal at δexc = 280 nm (≈ 300 nm in the humic acid fraction). The peak is absent in the spectra of humic substances isolated from a non‐polluted site of the river, but it is clearly seen in the spectra of the humic substances from a site downstream of the discharge of the effluent. Synchronous fluorescence spectra (Δδ = 60 nm) of water samples from the river and its lagoon were recorded and revealed to be an easy and fast way of tracing the organic contamination from the effluent.  相似文献

The paper presented here describes experiments with a nanofiltration pilot plant treating spring water which contains high amounts of humic substances. With this process, water components such as humic substances, iron, manganese, and aluminum may be very well removed. However, the low pH value of the NF filtrate does not conform with the German standards. This is why the pH value will be increased in a second treatment step by limestone filtration. Prior to limestone filtration, CO2 dosage is required in order to make sure that the pH value stays below the upper limit of the German standards of 9.5. With this treatment, a drinking water results which meets the German standards and has good chemical properties with respect to corrosion. The operation of the nanofiltration pilot plant for the treatment of the very soft spring water did not require the continuous addition of chemicals in order to prevent scaling. Although the spring water entered the NF without chemical pretreatment, there was no decrease in filtrate capacity observed over a period of six months. This is in contrast to other investigations involving colour reduction from very hard surface waters. When treating very hard waters by nanofiltration, the addition of complexing agents or acid is required in order to prevent scaling of the membranes. Such intricate pretreatment procedures cause doubt of the application of nanofiltration for the treatment of hard waters in large plants. However, in the case presented here, the application of NF in combination with the hardening step is quite simple, so that the full-scale plant may be operated mainly automatically and will require only little maintenance.  相似文献

The decomposition of plant litter is a fundamental ecological process in small forest streams. Litter decomposition is mostly controlled by litter characteristics and environmental conditions, with shredders playing a critical role. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of leaf species (Maprounea guianensis and Inga laurina, which have contrasting physical and chemical characteristics) and water nutrient enrichment (three levels) on leaf litter chemical characteristics and fungal biomass, and subsequent litter preference and consumption by Phylloicus sp. (a typical shredder in tropical streams). Maprounea guianensis leaves had lower lignin and nitrogen (N) concentrations, higher polyphenols concentration and lower lignin:N ratio than I. laurina leaves. Phosphorus concentrations were higher for both leaf species incubated at the highest water nutrient level. Fungal biomass was higher on M. guianensis than on I. laurina leaves, but it did not differ among nutrient levels. Relative consumption rates were higher when shredders fed on M. guianensis than on I. laurina leaves, due to the lower lignin:N ratio and higher fungal biomass of M. guianensis. Consumption rates on M. guianensis leaves were higher for those exposed to low water nutrient levels than for those exposed to moderate water nutrient levels. Feeding preferences by shredders were not affected by leaf species or nutrient level. The low carbon quality on I. laurina leaves makes it a less attractive substrate for microbial decomposers and a less palatable resource for shredders. Changes in litter input characteristics may be more important than short-term nutrient enrichment of stream water on shredder performance and ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

As a special sedimentary grain type, the coated grain (with an ooid model) has been known for two centuries due to its fascinating special fabric and genesis developments. The leading factors in forming the coated grain consist mainly of: (1) microorganism movement field; (2) chemical sedimentary effect; (3) hydrodynamic force environment and topography condition; (4) abundant core material supply; (5) embedding condition; and (6) humic acids condition in water medium. With the development of the coated grain genesis, the single factor theory cannot reasonably explain the exact formation of the surface sediment of coated grain. Here, we find a new way to study the coated grain on the basis of traditional research methods. The Wenquan area on the northeast edge of the Qiangtang Basin is one of the few areas where the coated grain is developing, and is a rare “natural laboratory” for the study of the coated grain and the thermal spring sediment. The oolitic sinter of the area has the triaxiality modality of pea polymer, and is obviously different from the karst travertine and the normal lacustrine ooid. We found that the hot spring water in the Wenquan area has higher partial pressure of CO2 \(\left( {P_{CO_2 } } \right)\) and saturation index of the calcite (SIc) than normal. Macrocosmically, the oolitic sinter is shaped like a pea, and its grains and gap fillings are light yellow. Microcosmically, the sinter grain forms six types of fundamental lamina, and those six types are developed to be four grain types with different combinations. The C-axis of the mineral grain of sinter cement (calcite) is normal to the lamina face, and grows on it with distinct generation formations. In short, the grain type of oolitic sinter is the oncoid, with the grain development caused by the factors such as the shallow water of strong hydrodynamic force, the special hydrochemistry condition, and the extensive algae activities (diatom).  相似文献

The molecular characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) reflect both its source material and its biogeochemical history. In glacial systems, DOM characteristics might be expected to change over the course of a melt season as changes in the glacier drainage system cause the mobilization of DOM from different OM pools. To test this hypothesis we used Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of synchronous fluorescence spectra to detect and describe changes in the DOM in meltwater from a glacier system in the Coast Mountains of northern British Columbia, Canada. For most of the melt season, the dominant component of subglacially routed meltwater DOM is characterized by a tyrosine‐like fluorophore. This DOM component is most likely derived from supraglacial snowmelt. During periods of high discharge, a second component of DOM is present which is humic in character and similar to DOM sampled from a nearby non‐glacial stream. This DOM component is inferred to be derived from a moss‐covered soil environment that has been glacially overrun. It is probably entrained into glacial melt waters when the supraglacial meltwater flux exceeds the capacity of the principal subglacial drainage channels and water floods areas of the glacier bed that are normally isolated from the subglacial drainage system. Another source of DOM also appears to be mobilized during periods of high air temperatures. Sediment and seawater samples were taken in a sewage affected channel in Blanca Bay, Argentina. Protein content, ‘humic substances’ and silt-clay percentage were evaluated in the sediments; NH4+, PO43? and ‘dissolved organic matter’ in seawater. A highly significant correlation (r=0.747, n=59) was obtained for the relation between protein and % silt-clay. The ‘humic substances’ distribution depends more on the distance from the outfall than does the protein content, probably because of the important relation of the latter with the sediment particle size. The dissolved components showed a dilution pattern similar to that of a contaminant plume in a moving water mass, reaching normal values at 1700 m from the outfall.  相似文献

As part of a study on microbial redox alteration of humic substances we investigated the potential effect of this metabolism on the fate of heavy metals and hydrocarbons as a result of conformational alteration of the humic molecular structure due to microbial reduction. Our studies indicate that the microbial reduction of humic acids (HA) results in significant morphological and geochemical alterations. X‐ray microscopy analysis indicate that the conformational structure of the humic colloids is altered as a result of the redox change. In the reduced state, the HA appeared as small dense particles, on reoxidation, large loose aggregates were formed. In addition, spectrofluorometric studies indicated that the binding capacity of the HA for naphthalene was decreased by 10% when the HA was reduced. Similarly, the reduced HA yielded higher surface tension values at all concentrations tested which is indicative of a more hydrophilic and less hydrophobic solute. On reoxidation, the surface tension values reverted back to values similar to those obtained for the untreated oxidized HA. These data indicate that the hydrophobicity of the HA is altered on biological reduction of the HA and that this alteration is reversible. In contrast the reduced HA demonstrated a 15% higher affinity for heavy metals such as divalent cobalt than the oxidized HA. In addition to increasing the binding capacity of HA for heavy metals, the reduction of the HA also decreased the bioavailability and toxicity of bound heavy metals such as chromium. When incubated in the presence of Cr(III) and HA, cells of Escherichia coli grew much more rapidly in the presence of the reduced HA suggesting that the higher metal binding capacity of the reduced humic substances resulted in a removal of the Cr(III) from solution and hence reduced its bioavailability and toxicity. These studies demonstrate that HA redox state and reduction of humic acids by microorganisms can have a significant effect on the molecular morphology and binding constants of HA for heavy metals and hydrocarbons and also directly affects the bioavailability of these compounds in the environment.  相似文献

Investigations of the Adsorptive Separation of Volatile Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (VCHC) from Water with Humic Substance by Novel Polymeric Adsorbents and Activated Carbons. Part II: Dynamics of Adsorption In this publication, the dynamics of adsorption of different volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHC) (1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethene) and a humic substance from water as well as of these VCHC from water with humic substance onto novel polymeric ad-[QJ][HR] sorbents (WOFATIT EP 63, DOWEX XUS 43493, MACRONET MN 100 and MN 200) was studied in comparison to activated carbons (NORIT ROW 0.8 SUPRA, PRECOLITH BKK 3, HYDRAFFIN CG). The obtained breakthrough curves and the following predicted characteristic values reveal that the polymeric adsorbents do not remove or remove the humic substance only with low adsorption capacity in contrast to the activated carbons. At the adsorption of the VCHC from water with humic substance it was determined that the influence of the humic substance on the adsorption capacity is substantially less on polymeric adsorbents than on activated carbons.  相似文献

由于严重的水体富营养化,太湖长期暴发蓝藻水华,这些蓝藻在代谢及消亡过程中大量释放包括腐植酸在内的有机物,不仅影响供水水质,并且进一步加重了水华程度.以太湖水华优势藻种——水华微囊藻(Microcystis flos-aquae T34)为研究对象,对藻株生长周期中的藻细胞、浮游细菌进行计数,并使用TOC仪与三维荧光光谱对培养液中提取的腐殖酸进行定量与定性分析,探究水华微囊藻在生长过程中藻细胞密度、浮游细菌密度与腐殖酸浓度的变化规律.结果表明,培养液中腐殖酸浓度的变化趋势与细菌数量变化趋势一致,但与细菌数量曲线拐点相比,腐殖酸浓度曲线拐点出现两周的延迟.腐殖酸产量在藻细胞对数期较低,当水华微囊藻进入稳定期与衰亡期后,腐殖酸大量产生,其浓度迅速增加,最高可达到28.6 mg/L.根据三维荧光光谱分析,水华微囊藻所产生的腐殖酸特征峰出现在(235~245 nm)/(380~425 nm),属于类富里酸荧光峰.本研究初步探究蓝藻与水体腐殖酸之间的关系,为水体腐殖酸来源的研究提供了新的思路.  相似文献

Humic material isolated from six Himalayan lakes was investigated for its elemental composition, exchange behaviour and spectrophotometric properties. The carbon content was 36.8… 56.6 %. The C: H ratio was lower than for soil humic acids. The nitrogen content was 3.8… 5.8 % and was higher than reported for soil humic acids. Zinc and copper were higher at the sites with high pollution load. On a strong cation exchanger copper showed the highest stability and calcium was least stable. The Δ log K values suggested that comparatively deep water sediments show lower degrees of humification.  相似文献

Water relation characteristics of the desert legumeAlhagi sparsifolia were investigated during the vegetation period from April to September 1999 in the foreland of Qira oasis at the southern fringe of the Taklamakan Desert, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. The seasonal variation of predawn water potentials and of diurnal water potential indicated thatAlhagi plants were well water supplied over the entire vegetation period. Decreasing values in the summer months were probably attributed to increasing temperatures and irradiation and therefore a higher evapotranspirative demand. Data from pressure-volume analysis confirmed thatAlhagi plants were not drought stressed and xylem sap flow measurements indicated thatAlhagi plants used large amounts of water during the summer months. Flood irrigation had no influence on water relations inAlhagi probably becauseAlhagi plants produced only few fine roots in the upper soil layers. The data indicate thatAlhagi sparsifolia is a drought-avoiding species that utilizes ground water by a deep roots system, which is the key characteristic to adjust the hyper-arid environment. Because growth and survival ofAlhagi depends on ground water supply, it is important that variations of ground water depth are kept to a minimum. The study will provide a theoretical basis for the restoration and management of natural vegetation around oasis in arid regions.  相似文献

Humic acid plays an important role in the distribution of heavy metals in the environment. The aims of this study were conducted to evaluate the spectroscopic characteristics and aluminum (Al) adsorption of humic acids which were extracted from four composts. The functional groups were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and solid‐state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C‐NMR). The results showed that the aromatic groups were all found in the humic acids of the four composts, and the surface of humic acids included carboxylic group, hydroxylic group, and amino group. The experiment of Al adsorption was described by Freundlich equation. It showed that the adsorption of Al by humic acid from compost of cattle manure was higher, but that from the compost of pig manure, lemon manure, tea manure in equal preparation was lower. The adsorptive behavior was different due to the interaction by functional groups ( OH and  COOH) with Al. These results can describe the fate and transportation of Al in the soil of different organic fertilizer.  相似文献

The monitoring of water quality, especially of karst springs, requires methods for rapidly estimating and quantifying parameters that indicate contamination. In the last few years, fluorescence-based measurements of tryptophan and humic acid have become a promising tool to assess water quality in near real-time. In this study, we conducted comparative tracer tests in a karst experimental site to investigate the transport properties and behavior of tryptophan and humic acid in a natural karst aquifer. These two tracers were compared with the conservative tracer uranine. Fluorescence measurements were conducted with an online field fluorometer and in the laboratory. The obtained breakthrough curves (BTCs) and the modeling results demonstrate that (1) the online field fluorometer is suitable for real-time fluorescence measurements of all three tracers; (2) the transport parameters obtained for uranine, tryptophan, and humic acid are comparable in the fast flow areas of the karst system; (3) the transport velocities of humic acid are slower and the resulting residence times are accordingly higher, compared to uranine and tryptophan, in the slower and longer flow paths; (4) the obtained BTCs reveal additional information about the investigated karst system. As a conclusion, the experiments show that the transport properties of tryptophan are similar to those of uranine while humic acid is partly transported slower and with retardation. These findings allow a better and quantitative interpretation of the results when these substances are used as natural fecal and contamination indicators.  相似文献

The stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium is the smallest native European crayfish, restricted to central and southeast Europe. Northeast boundary of its range is located within the Elbe basin but considerable uncertainties existed regarding its status in this area. Until recently, known stone crayfish populations in the Elbe basin were very scattered and human translocations have been implicated in such distribution pattern. Discoveries of additional populations in the Czech Republic and Saxony (east Germany) nevertheless suggest that the species may have been more widespread there. We provide data on genetic variation (based on 181 sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene) of 20 representative populations from the Elbe basin (both from the Czech Republic and Saxony). We tested whether the haplotype variation is consistent with a scenario of natural dispersal or whether long-range transport has been involved. All analysed individuals from the easternmost, geographically isolated Czech stone crayfish population carried a haplotype previously recorded only in Slovenia and its vicinity; it is therefore likely that such population has been introduced by humans. In contrast, all remaining studied populations were dominated by a haplotype widespread in adjacent regions of species’ distribution in Germany, and additional haplotypes differing by point mutations were occasionally detected. This is consistent with a scenario of a postglacial colonization from Bavaria (southeast Germany). Our study provides evidence for a double origin of stone crayfish populations in the upper Elbe basin, with both natural and anthropogenic factors likely affecting the present diversity and distribution of this species.  相似文献

At the beginning of the drought in the Sahel in the 1970s and 1980s, rainfall decreased markedly, but runoff coefficients and in some cases, absolute runoff increased. This situation was due to the conversion of the land cover from natural vegetation with a low annual runoff coefficient, to cropland and bare soils, whose runoff coefficients are higher. Unless they are adapted, hydrological conceptual models, such as GR2M, are unable to reproduce this increase in runoff. Despite the varying environmental and climatic conditions of the West African Sahel, we show that it is possible to increase the performance of the GR2M model simulations by elaborating a time‐varying soil water holding capacity and to incorporate this value in the annual maximum amount of water to be stored in reservoir A of the model. We looked for interactions between climate, rural society, and the environment. These interactions drive land‐cover changes in the Sahel, which in turn drive the distribution of rainfall between infiltration, evaporation, and runoff and hence the water resources, which are vital in this region. We elaborated several time series of key indicators linked to these interactions. We then integrated these changes in the runoff conditions of the GR2M model through the maximum value of the reservoir capacity. We calculated annual values of water holding capacity using the annual values of four classes of land cover, natural vegetation, cultivated area, bare soil, and surface water. We then used the hydrological model with and without this time‐varying soil value of A and compared the performances of the model under the two scenarios. Whatever the calibration period used, the Nash–Sutcliffe index was always greater in the case of the time‐varying A time series.  相似文献
