We collected infrared and radio data on 110 OH/IR stars, 65 S stars and 184 C-rich stars from the literature. We analyzed their spectral energy distributions, bolometric magnitudes, infrared colors and mass-loss rates. Our study confirms that OH/IR stars and C-rich stars reach similarly high mass-loss rates at similar luminosities, supporting the idea that mass-loss rates are determined by internal stellar activities such as pulsation rather than the properties of their envelopes. The mass-loss rates of OH/IR stars and C-rich stars are strongly correlated with the color indices K-[A], K-[C], K-[D] and K-[E], and the two populations can be described with one formula. Our study also reveals that only those stars with color indices K-[A]<4 or K-[C]<5 have SEDs that peak in the near-infrared waveband.  相似文献

If we follow recent work and in order to extend theuvby photometric calibrations to spectral types later than G0, we present an attempt to use the combineduvby and systems for stars in the range G5-K7 and luminosity classes V to III.The behaviour in the MK-, (by)– and cl– diagrams of the 200 stars, only good spectroscopic data being considered, suggests the usefulness of the index as an independent parameter for late-type Main-Sequence stars, following in a natural way the general trend defined by Crawford for F- and G-type stars.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meetings of the IAU on New Windows to the Universe, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain  相似文献

The Hipparcos mission discovered a few dozen M giant stars with periods P shorter than 10 d. Similar stars may be found in other large data bases of new variables (e.g., OGLE). The three possible sources of the magnitude variations – pulsation, starspots and ellipsoidal deformation – are discussed in general terms. The parallaxes and V − I colour indices are used to calculate radii and temperatures for all M giant variables with P <100 d. Masses are estimated from the positions of the stars in a Hertzsprung–Russell (HR) diagram, using evolutionary tracks. Using these data, it is shown that starspots can be ruled out as a variability mechanism in almost all cases, and ellipsoidal variations in about half of the stars. Pulsation in very high-overtone modes appears to be the only viable explanation for the stars with P <10 d. Many of the stars may be multiperiodic. IRAS data are used to deduce information about reddening and circumstellar dust. The apparently low level of mass-loss, as well as the kinematics and the spatial distribution of the stars, indicates that they are from a relatively young (i.e., thin disc) giant star population.  相似文献

This paper is the third in our series of papers devoted to the investigation of X-ray emission from OB stars.In our two previous papers,we study the high-resolution X-ray spectra of 32 O stars and 25 B stars to investigate the correlations between the properties of X-ray emission and stellar parameters.We checked if the X-ray hardness and post-shock plasma temperature grow with increasing stellar magnetic field,mass loss rate and terminal wind velocity.Our previous analysis of high-resolution spectra showed that the correlations are weak or even absent.In the present paper,we analyzed low-resolution X-ray spectra,using model-independent X-ray hardness values for checking the above mentioned dependencies.We establish that X-ray luminosities L_X weakly depend on the stellar magnetic field.At the same time,Lx ∝ M~(0.5) and L_X ∝ E_(kin)~(0.5),where M is the mass loss rate and E_(kin) is the kinetic energy of the wind.The X-ray luminosities decrease with growing magnetic confinement parameter η.We also argue that there is an additional(probably non-thermal) component contributed to the stellar X-ray emission.  相似文献

Reported mode changes in δ Scuti stars can usually be explained by data insufficient to obtain multiperiodic solutions and by the effect of time-variable amplitudes. The extensive data on 4 CVn obtained by the Delta Scuti Network are used to illustrate that the large changes in the appearance of the power spectra over the years from 1966 to 1996 can be ascribed to amplitude variability. The period changes of δ Scuti stars have been collected or redetermined from the available observations and are compared with values computed from evolutionary models. For the radial pulsators of Pop. I, the observations indicate (1/P)(dP/dt) values around 10−7 yr−1 with equal distribution between period increases and decreases. The evolutionary models, on the other hand, predict that the vast majority should show increasing periods a factor of about ten smaller than observed. Arguments are given why the rate of evolution for these relatively unevolved stars cannot yet be deduced from the observed period changes.  相似文献

Following the discovery, by IRAS, of the dust disc around Vega and three other main sequence stars, searches have been made for other candidates. The-Pic-like candidates have 12µm excesses and 100µm fluxes (unlike the Vega-like candidates), so they can be further investigated using ground-based techniques. Data are presented here, comprising 10µm spectroscopy and sub-mm observations, for several candidates from the Walker & Wolstencroft list, showing that the stars have silicate dust, and optically thick dust discs even at 1300µm.  相似文献

We evaluate the feasibility of Bose–Einstein condensate stars (BECS) as models for the interior of neutron stars (NSs). BECS are compact objects composed of bosons, formed through the spin-parallel pairing of neutrons. Here, we utilize the astronomical data from GW170817, XMMU J173203.3-344518 (the lightest NS known), and a novel lower limit on NS core heat capacity to scrutinize the compatibility of BECS with these recent observations of NSs. Our specific focus is to constrain the values of the scattering length a $$ a $$ , parameter determining the strength of particle interactions in the model. Our analysis suggests that if the stars involved in GW170817 were BECSs, the scattering length of their constituent bosons should fall within the 4 $$ 4 $$ to 10 $$ 10 $$ fm range. Additionally, at a scattering length of a 3.1 4 $$ a\sim 3.1-4 $$ fm, stars with mass and radius characteristics akin to XMMU J173203.3-344518 are identified. Moreover, we find that the heat capacity depends on the mass and temperature of BECS, and surpasses the established lower bound for NS cores when a > 2 5 $$ a>2-5 $$ fm. In summary, our results endorse BECS models with a 4 $$ a\sim 4 $$ fm, providing NS observables in agreement with diverse observations and contributing to the understanding of NS interiors.  相似文献

In the usual and most widespread textbook picture of the Milky Way Galaxy, disk stars like the Sun are referred to as Population I, the spheroidal or halo component in turn as Population II. The latter is thought of as the pressure-supported, metal-poor relic of the early Galaxy, with renewed interest in recent years in the search for dark matter via microlensing. Modelling the putative massive compact halo objects however, faces the problem that the stellar halo is generally considered to consist of only a few billion solar masses. Here we present observational evidence that even this low budget may be a factor ten too high. If so, this immediately implies that the classical population II of halo stars is fairly irrelevant, not only in the dark matter context, but, in particular, in models of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy.  相似文献

The chemical-dynamical properties of stars with giant planets are compared to those of a nearby star sample within the framework of a stellar orbital diffusion model. The stars-with-planets sample includes recently discovered extrasolar planets and the Sun. We find that the planet-bearing stars, 14 Her, ρ 1 Cnc and τ Boo, are much more metal-rich than stars of similar age and this cannot be easily explained by orbital diffusion. We also confirm previous claims that the motion of the Sun relative to the local standard of rest is very small compared to other G dwarfs of similar age, and we offer a possible explanation for this apparent anomaly.  相似文献

In this paper an attempt has been made to determine the effect of Coriolis force on the shapes of Roche equipotential surfaces of rotating stars and stars in binary systems. Equations of Roche equipotential surfaces have been obtained for rotating and binary stars which take into account the effects of Coriolis force besides the centrifugal and gravitational forces. Shapes of Roche equipotentials and values of Roche limits are obtained for different values of angular velocity of rotation for rotating stars and for different values of mass ratios for the binary stars. The obtained results have been compared with the corresponding results in which the effect of Coriolis force has not been considered.  相似文献

Among the mechanisms suggested for the creation of discs around Be stars is interaction with binary companions. This idea has largely been dismissed, because the majority of Be stars have no observed companion. This difficulty can be circumvented if single Be stars are actually ejected from binary systems (owing, for instance, to the supernova of the companion). Using Hipparcos data, we show that this explanation is not likely, by comparing the velocity distributions of Be stars with those of normal B stars. We find that the distributions are consistent to within 1 σ uncertainties, and thus do not support the formation of single Be stars through binary breakup.  相似文献

Empirical period-luminosity-colour (P-L-C) relations are obtained for the four lowest modes corresponding to radial pulsations. Trapezium type multiple stars are centers of star formation in stellar associations. Theoretical and observational studies show that they are dynamically instable. Due to the special space configurations of the components, Trapezium type multiple stars disintegrate completely or partly after several rotations around their centers. These stars have a main role in the origin and evolution of stars on OB- and T-associations. According to observations of 15 Trapezium type multiple stars having the brightest star of OB-class 14 are in expansion. The age of the Trapezium type multiple stars is of the order of 21(P years. There are weighty arguments to assume that the majority of them are in a state of expansion with positive total energy. Based on high resolution spectroscopic observations hydrogen-line profiles of six Bootis stars: HD 31295, HD 101108, HD 105058, HD 106223, HD 142703 and HD 183324 are presented. Peculiar line profiles with weak cores and broad but shallow wings are found for four of the stars. Influence of metallicity parameter [Z/H] and effective temperature on the appearance of the observed hydrogen lines is discussed.  相似文献

One interesting method of constraining the dense matter Equations of State is to measure the advancement of the periastron of the orbit of a binary radio pulsar (when it belongs to a double neutron star system). There is a great deal of interest on applicability of this procedure to the double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 (A/B). Although the above method can be applied to PSR A in future within some limitations, for PSR B this method cannot be applied. On the other hand, the study of genesis of PSR B might be useful in this connection and its low mass might be an indication that it could be a strange star.  相似文献

The behaviour of the spectral metallicity parameters S of the RR Lyrae stars in the course of light change is considered. Electrophotometry results of 9 stars of the given class inUVbY are presented. We fit the colour–magnitude diagrams of stars between the zero-age main-sequence and terminal-age main sequence in young clusters and associations. The ages we derive are a factor of 1.5–2 longer than the commonly used ages for these regions, which are derived from the positions of pre-main-sequence stars in colour–magnitude diagrams. From an examination of the uncertainties in the main-sequence and pre-main-sequence models, we conclude that the longer age scale is probably the correct one, which implies that we must revise upwards the commonly used ages for young clusters and associations. Such a revision would explain the discrepancy between the observational lifetimes of protoplanetary discs and theoretical calculations of the time to form planets. It would also explain the absence of clusters with ages between 5 and 30 Myr.
We use the  τ2  statistic to fit the main-sequence data, but find that we must make significant modifications if we are to fit sequences which have vertical segments in the colour–magnitude diagram. We present this modification along with improvements to the methods of calculating the goodness-of-fit statistic and parameter uncertainties.

The observations of the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory show that the spatial distribution of -ray burst sources is isotropic but radially non-uniform. As is well known, the spectral features, the time histories and the X-ray tails present in some -ray bursts suggest that they may arise from galactic neutron stars. But, low velocity neutron stars born in the Galactic disk would concentrate toward the galactic plane and center, and could not fit the BATSE results. However, the high velocity neutron stars with velocity 1000 km s–1 may escape from the Galactic gravitational field and form a nearly isotropic distribution. Here we calculate the three statistical values of V/V max, sin2 b and cos as functions of the intensitiesC max/C min and find that they could be fitted by the distribution of high velocity neutron stars under the assumption that the high velocity neutron stars should turn on as -ray burst sources only after some time (perhaps after they have ceased to be radio pulsars). Our calculation shows that the statistical value of cos is more sensitive than sin2 b to the angular distribution of high velocity neutron stars, i.e. the deviation of cos from 0 is more readily detected than the deviation of sin2 b from 1/3, so we expect that with the increasing sensitivity of instrument and the more exact value of cos , it is possible to determine whether this high velocity neutron star model is correct. Recent theoretical and observational progress has substantially improved the definition of the lower main sequence and established a new basis for a comparison of main sequence stars and the secondaries in CVs. The evolutionary sequences of Kolb & Baraffe (1999) imply that the secondaries in many CVs are expanded compared with main sequence stars of the same mass as a consequence of unusually high mass transfer rates and/or pre-CV nuclear evolution. We show that the location of the secondaries of all well-studied CVs in the spectral type period diagram implies that they are consistent with having near-solar metallicities. We show, furthermore, that the surface brightness of K/M stars depends on gravity and metallicity and present new Barnes–Evans relations valid for dwarfs of near-solar metallicity and the secondaries in CVs of the galactic disk population. Distances derived by the surface brightness method agree with recent measurements of the trigonometric parallaxes of a few selected systems.  相似文献
