Using isentropic and homogeneous stellar models the final stages of stellar evolution are discussed. These primitive models are a natural generalization of polytropic models to cases of complex equations of state. The equations of state used in the present work include the effects of radiation, quantum degeneracy, relativistic electrons and pairs, and of a Fe-He transition.A limiting mass-entropy relation is discussed. This relation is a direct generalization of Chandrasekhar's limiting mass for white dwarfs, and is useful for obtaining a general picture of the evolutionary tracks at late stages.Tracks of central conditions on thep, T plane are calculated for isentropic models and the occurrence of various instabilities is discussed.Supported in part by the National Science Foundation [GP-7976] formerly [GP-5391] and the Office of Naval Research [Nonr-220 (47)].  相似文献

The motion of convective cells in an environment which changes rapidly with depth is examined. In such an environment a cell may move through regions with different levels of ionization and with associated differences in heat capacity. The energy equation is cast in a manner which is independent of the history of these cells. The convective flux at a given level of the atmosphere is written as an average over an ensemble of cells originating at a range of other levels. A procedure for correcting the temperature gradient for these non-local effects is described and results for a model solar atmosphere are given. The principal results are: (1) The rms velocity varies smoothly and is non-zero well into the photosphere (e.g.,v rsm=1.4 km/sec at =0.2); (2) Convective overshoot reduces the radiative flux to 60% and 90% of the total at =2.5 and 0.2 respectively; and (3) The interior adiabat of the convective envelope is less sensitive to the assumed value of the average cell size than in the usual treatment of convection.Supported in part by the National Science Foundation [GP-9433, GP-9114], the Office of Naval Research [Nonr-220(47)], and Air Force Grant AG-AFOSR-171-67.  相似文献

We describe a combined dynamic atmosphere and maser propagation model of SiO maser emission in Mira variables. This model rectifies many of the defects of an earlier model of this type, particularly in relation to the infrared (IR) radiation field generated by dust and various wavelength-dependent, optically thick layers. Modelled masers form in rings with radii consistent with those found in very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations and with earlier models. This agreement requires the adoption of a radio photosphere of radius approximately twice that of the stellar photosphere, in agreement with observations. A radio photosphere of this size renders invisible certain maser sites with high amplification at low radii, and conceals high-velocity shocks, which are absent in radio continuum observations. The SiO masers are brightest at an optical phase of 0.1–0.25, which is consistent with observed phase lags. Dust can have both mild and profound effects on the maser emission. Maser rings, a shock and the optically thick layer in the SiO pumping band at 8.13 μm appear to be closely associated in three out of four phase samples.  相似文献

Collapsing white dwarf stars (or degenerate cores) may occur in binary systems, in the formation of Type I supernovae or in the formation of pulsars. These collapsing configurations may explode their nuclear fuel (12C or16O) by the detonation wave mechanism. A combination of analytical and numerical models is used to investigate the formation of detonation waves. The tentative conclusion is that a detonation wave will form which will lead to the ignition of esentially all the fuel in such a collapsing star. This potentially explosive configuration will be strongly affected, however, by rapid beta processes which occur in the detonated matter and which should cause a fraction of the stellar mass to collapse toward a neutron star state. The nature and effect of such beta processes, which have not yet been incorporated in the dynamical calculations, are discussed. An appendix gives approximate expressions for the pressureP(,T) and the internal energy densityU(,T) for a degenerate relativistic electron gas and an analysis of the errors expected in making such approximations to the standard parametric form of the equation of state. These expressions are useful in analyzing shock waves in a degenerate electron gas.Supported in part by the National Science Foundation [GP-15911, GP-9114, GP-19887] and the Office of Naval Research [Nonr-220 (47)] at the California Institute of Technology, and National Science Foundation Grant GP-12455 at the University of Colorado.  相似文献

A theory for the brightness fluctuations of the Sun as a star under the effect of its global oscillations has been developed. Formulas for the darkening and visibility of p-modes are derived and their calculations are performed in the local approximation for adiabatic oscillations. Observational data from the DIFOS multichannel photometer onboard the CORONAS-F satellite are used to solve the inverse problem of determining the amplitude of the five-minute temperature fluctuations in the solar photosphere as a function of the height. Analysis of the solution and comparison with the results of other authors suggest that the predicted temperature waves resulting from a linear transformation of p-modes in the photosphere exist in the photosphere. The wavelength and phase velocity of the temperature waves are considerably smaller than those of acoustic waves. It turns out that the solar brightness fluctuations should be produced mainly by the temperature waves in the photosphere, not by the p-modes themselves. The darkening function for the brightness fluctuations is oscillatory in behavior, while the visibility function can differ markedly from that for the Doppler shifts of spectral lines produced by p-modes. These properties are important for interpreting the observations of stellar oscillations based on stellar brightness fluctuations.  相似文献

A number of late [WC] stars have unique infrared properties, not foundamong the non-[WC] planetary nebulae, and together define a class of IR-[WC]stars. They have unusual IRAS colours, resembling stars in theearliest post-AGB evolution and possibly related to PAH formation. Most or all show a double chemistry, with both a neutral (molecular)oxygen-rich and an inner carbon-rich region. Their dense nebulae indicaterecent evolution from the AGB, suggesting a fatal-thermal-pulse (FTP)scenario. Although both the colours and the stellar characteristicspredict fast evolution, it is shown that this phase must last for104 yr. The morphologies of the nebulae are discussed. Forone object in Sgr, the progenitor mass (1.3 M) is known. The stellar temperatures of the IR-[WC] stars appear much higher inlow metallicity systems (LMC, Sgr). This may be indicative of anextended `pseudo' photosphere. It is proposed that re-accretion ofejected gas may slow down the post-AGB evolution and so extend the lifetime of the IR-[WC] stars.  相似文献

We present a method of determining lower limits on the masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars and so constraining the PMS evolutionary tracks. This method uses the redshifted absorption feature observed in some emission-line profiles of T Tauri stars, indicative of infall. The maximum velocity of the accreting material measures the potential energy at the stellar surface, which, combined with an observational determination of the stellar radius, yields the stellar mass. This estimate is a lower limit owing to uncertainties in the geometry and projection effects. Using available data, we show that the computed lower limits can be larger than the masses derived from PMS evolutionary tracks for M   0.5 M. Our analysis also supports the notion that accretion streams do not impact near the stellar poles but probably hit the stellar surface at moderate latitudes.  相似文献

A new model of the internal structure of certain types of celestial bodies is proposed. It is based on the concept that some neutron stars might have been formed earlier than all other type of stars, at an early stage of expansion of the universe, directly from continuous cosmic matter. Under such conditions, a neutron star after forming becomes an efficient center for the accretion of cosmic plasma. The plasma streams falling onto the neutron star carry magnetic fields with them that are created in the process (by thermoelectric currents and the dynamo process) and pack the fields tightly around the star. After a certain time, an extended and strongly magnetized plasma layer is formed around the neutron star. As a result, a stellar configuration is formed with an outer layer, mass, radius, and luminosity similar to those of an ordinary star. In the magnetized part of such a configuration, the gravitational attraction of the masses is compensated for by a magnetic pressure gradient, while the plasma is confifned by the magnetic field itself. Numerical estimates corroborate the possibility that magnetized stars exist. The radii and masses of the magnetized spheres of such stars are considerably less than the radii and masses of the corresponding configurations, so in observations they should not differ from ordinary stars: the outer layers (intermediate layer, photosphere, and chromosphere) of the magnetized configuration are the same as for an ordinary star. Structural differences may appear in the inner regions, however, involving magnetic activity and neutrino luminosity, for example.  相似文献

The study of He-r stellar photospheres aiming at detection of vertical stratification of helium is presented. Using high resolution data and the spectrum synthesis method, helium enhancement was indicated in several stars in a sample and in the two He layer model (minimum model), and it is suggested for the photosphere. The break point of helium abundance is often around a depth-mass variable of 0.2. The He-r stars are slightly evolved, the interval of the surface gravities being (3.8–4.2), in agreement with standard B type stars. The giant star HD68450 possesses a strong vertical stratification of helium. Previous reports on the elemental stratification were confirmed for our sample.  相似文献

Assuming the clouds as plane parallel structures above the photosphere, center-to-limb contrast variations of various cloud models for solar faculae with approximations such as optically thin or thick, hot or cold, and with or without surface reflections, have been investigated. It has been found that the observed facular contrast data from Frazier (1971) and Taylor et al. (1998) at the 525 nm continuum is best represented by a cloud which is 230 K hotter than the undisturbed photosphere, with an optical depth =0.4283, and with isotropic surface reflections causing 11% of the background photons to be lost before penetrating into the cloud. This model and some other cloud models are shown to provide a fit better than the other physical and non-physical facular models presented previously.  相似文献

The method of Goldberg and Unno for the determination of microturbulent velocities in a stellar atmosphere is only applicable if there are no macroturbulent or convective motions. If such motions occur, as in the solar photosphere, the derived results are false and may lead to misinterpretations such as an increase of the microturbulent velocity with depth or anisotropic microturbulence.  相似文献

The activity of the variable star IN Com is considered using the latest multicolor UBVRI photometry and linear polarimetric observations carried out during a decade. The photometric variability of the star is fully described using the zonal spottedness model developed at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (CrAO). Spotted regions cover up to 22% of the total stellar surface, with the difference in temperatures between the quiet photosphere and the spot umbra being 600 K. The spots are located at middle and low latitudes (40°–55°). The intrinsic broad-band linear polarization of IN Com and its rotational modulation in the U band due to local magnetic fields at the most spotted (active) stellar longitudes were detected for the first time.  相似文献

Starspots
Starspots are created by local magnetic fields on the surfaces of stars, just as sunspots. Their fields are strong enough to suppress the overturning convective motion and thus block or redirect the flow of energy from the stellar interior outwards to the surface and consequently appear as locally cool and therefore dark regions against an otherwise bright photosphere (Biermann in Astronomische Nachrichten 264:361, 1938; Z Astrophysik 25:135, 1948). As such, starspots are observable tracers of the yet unknown internal dynamo activity and allow a glimpse into the complex internal stellar magnetic field structure. Starspots also enable the precise measurement of stellar rotation which is among the key ingredients for the expected internal magnetic topology. But whether starspots are just blown-up sunspot analogs, we do not know yet. This article is an attempt to review our current knowledge of starspots. A comparison of a white-light image of the Sun (G2V, 5 Gyr) with a Doppler image of a young solar-like star (EK Draconis; G1.5V, age 100 Myr, rotation 10 × Ω Sun) and with a mean-field dynamo simulation suggests that starspots can be of significantly different appearance and cannot be explained with a scaling of the solar model, even for a star of same mass and effective temperature. Starspots, their surface location and migration pattern, and their link with the stellar dynamo and its internal energy transport, may have far reaching impact also for our understanding of low-mass stellar evolution and formation. Emphasis is given in this review to their importance as activity tracers in particular in the light of more and more precise exoplanet detections around solar-like, and therefore likely spotted, host stars.  相似文献

p-mode oscillations in solar-like stars are excited by the outer convection zone in these stars and reflected close to the surface. The p modes are trapped inside an acoustic cavity, but the modes only stay trapped up to a given frequency [known as the acoustic cut-off frequency  (νac)  ] as modes with larger frequencies are generally not reflected at the surface. This means that modes with frequency larger than the acoustic cut-off frequency must be travelling waves. The high-frequency modes may provide information about the physics in the outer layers of the stars and the excitation source and are therefore highly interesting as it is the estimation of these two phenomena that cause some of the largest uncertainties when calculating stellar oscillations.
High-frequency modes have been detected in the Sun, in β Hydri and in α Cen A and α Cen B by smoothing the so-called echelle diagram and the large frequency separation as a function of frequency has been estimated. The large frequency separation has been compared with a simple model of the acoustic cavity which suggests that the reflectivity of the photosphere is larger at high frequency than predicted by standard models of the solar atmosphere and that the depth of the excitation source is larger than what has been estimated by other models and might depend on the order n and degree l of the modes.  相似文献

The following instability regions for blueward evolving-supergiants are outlined and compared. (1) Areas in the Hertzsprung–Russell (HR) diagram where stars are dynamically unstable. (2) Areas where the effective acceleration in the upper part of the photospheres is negative, hence directed outward. (3) Areas where the sonic points of the stellar winds (where     are situated inside the photospheres, at a level deeper than     . We compare the results with the positions of actual stars in the HR diagram and we find evidence that the recent strong contraction of the yellow hypergiant HR 8752 was initiated in a period during which     , whereupon the star became dynamically unstable. The instability and extreme shells around IRC+10420 are suggested to be related to three factors:     the sonic point is situated inside the photosphere; and the star is dynamically unstable.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of the planetary nebula M4–18 (G146.7+07.6) and its WC10-type Wolf–Rayet (WR) central star, based on high‐quality optical spectroscopy (WHT/UES, INT/IDS, WIYN/DensPak) and imaging ( HST /WFPC2). From a non-LTE model atmosphere analysis of the stellar spectrum, we derive T eff=31 kK,     v =160 km s−1 and abundance number ratios of H/He<0.5, C/He=0.60 and O/He=0.10. These parameters are remarkably similar to those of He 2–113 ([WC10]). Assuming an identical stellar mass to that determined by De Marco et al. for He 2–113, we obtain a distance of 6.8 kpc to M4–18 [ E ( B−V )=0.55 mag from nebular and stellar techniques]. This implies that the planetary nebula of M4–18 has a dynamical age of ∼3100 yr, in contrast to ≥270 yr for He 2–113. This is supported by the much higher electron density of the latter. These observations may be reconciled with evolutionary predictions only if [WC]-type stars exhibit a range in stellar masses.
Photoionization modelling of M4–18 is carried out using our stellar WR flux distribution, together with blackbody and Kurucz energy distributions obtained from Zanstra analyses. We conclude that the ionizing energy distribution from the WR model provides the best consistency with the observed nebular properties, although discrepancies remain.  相似文献

We examine the structure of cool magnetic spots in the photospheres of evolved stars, specifically asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. We find that the photosphere of a cool magnetic spot will be above the surrounding photosphere of AGB stars, which is the opposite of the situation in the Sun . This results from the behaviour of the opacity, which increases with decreasing temperature, which again is the opposite of the behaviour of the opacity near the effective temperature of the Sun . We analyse the formation of dust above the cool magnetic spots, and suggest that the dust formation is facilitated by strong shocks, driven by stellar pulsations, which run through and around the spots. The presence of both the magnetic field and cooler temperatures makes dust formation easier as the shock passes above the spot. We review some observations supporting the proposed mechanism, and suggest further observations to check the model.  相似文献

The presence of convective and turbulent motions, and the evolution of magnetic fields give rise to existence of temperature fluctuations in stellar atmospheres, active galactic nuclei and other cosmic objects. We observe the time and surface averaged radiation fluxes from these objects. These fluxes depend on both the mean temperature and averaged temperature fluctuations. The usual photosphere models do not take into account the temperature fluctuations and use only the distribution of the mean temperature into surface layers of stars. We investigate how the temperature fluctuations change the spectra in continuum assuming that the degree of fluctuations (the ratio of mean temperature fluctuation to the mean temperature) is small. We suggest the procedure of calculation of continuum spectra, which takes into account the temperature fluctuations. As a first step one uses the usual model of a photosphere without fluctuations. The observed spectrum is presented as a part depending on mean temperature and the additional part proportional to quadratic value of fluctuation degree. It is shown that for some forms of absorption factor the additional part in Wien’s region of spectrum can be evaluated directly from observed spectrum. This part depends on the first and second wavelength derivatives, which can be calculated numerically from the observed spectrum. Our estimates show that the temperature dependence of absorption factors is very important by calculation of continuum spectra corrections. As the examples we present the estimates for a few stars from Pulkovo spectrophotometric catalog and for the Sun. The influence of temperature fluctuations on color indices of observed cosmic objects is also investigated.  相似文献

A new crossing method for the study of turbulent velocities in solar and stellar photospheres is considered. The method does not need knowledge of the abundance and oscillator strengths for determining the microturbulent velocity, if the macroturbulent velocity is adopted; or it allows investigation of the micro- and macro-velocities simultaneously, if the abundance and oscillator strengths are known. Using the crossing method for 200 lines of neutral iron we obtain microturbulent velocities for a large range of depths in the solar photosphere. The distribution of macroturbulent velocities with depth is also investigated. The total velocity field calculated from the obtained micro- and macro-velocities agrees with previous results from independent methods. This demonstrates the reliability of using the crossing method for separate determination of the micro- and macroturbulent velocities in solar and stellar atmospheres.  相似文献
