This paper summarizes a study of the development of a large number of geomagnetic storms in terms of the solar wind—magnetosphere energy coupling function ε, the AE and Dst indices. It is shown that the maximum magnitude of the main phase decrease (¦Dst¦) is determined primarily by the peak value of ε; for ε < 1019 erg s?1, ~1019 erg s?1, 1019–1020 erg s?1, ? 1020 erg s?1, the maximum values of ¦Dst¦ are < 50γ, ~50γ, ~100γ and ? 200γ, respectively. A few examples for different peak values of ε (and thus of ¦Dst¦) are presented and examined in detail. Substorm activity during storms is well controlled by ε.  相似文献

The recent finding of the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling function ε has advanced significantly our understanding of magnetospheric disturbances. It is shown that the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling system responds somewhat differently to three different input energy flux levels of ε. As ε increases from < 1017 erg s?1 to > 019 erg s?1, typical responses of the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling system are:ε < 1017 erg s?1: an enhancement of the Sqp, etc,ε ≈ 1018 erg s?1: substorm onset,1018 erg s?1 < ε < 1019 erg s?1f: a typical substorm,ε >1019 erg s?1: an abnormal growth of the ring current belt, resulting in a magnetospheric storm. It is stressed that the magnetospheric substorm results as a direct response of the magnetosphere to a rise and fall of ε above ≈ 1018 erg s?1, so that it is not caused by a sudden conversion of magnetic energy accumulated prior to substorm onset. The variety of the development of the main phase of geomagnetic storms is also primarily controlled by ε.  相似文献

When a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is ejected by the Sun, it reaches the Earth orbit in a modified state and is called an ICME (Interplanetary CME). When an ICME blob engulfs the Earth, short-scale cosmic-ray (CR) storms (Forbush decreases, FDs) occur, sometimes accompanied by geomagnetic Dst storms, if the B z component in the blob is negative. Generally, this is a sudden process that causes abrupt changes. However, sometimes before this abrupt change (FD) due to strong ICME blobs, there are slow, small changes in interplanetary parameters such as steady increases in solar wind speed V, which are small, but can last for several hours. In the present communication, CR changes in such an event are illustrated in the period 1?–?3 October 2013, when V increased steadily from ~?200 km?s?1 to ~?400 km?s?1 during 24 hours on 1 October 2013. The CR intensities decreased by 1?–?2 % during some hours of this 24-hour interval, indicating that CR intensities do respond to these weak but long-lasting increases in interplanetary solar wind speed.  相似文献

It is shown that by monitoring time variations of the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling function ?(t) upstream of the solar wind, one should be able to predict fairly accurately the growth and decay of individual magnetospheric substorms and storms.  相似文献

We have examined the relationships among coronal holes (CHs), corotating interaction regions (CIRs), and geomagnetic storms in the period 1996?–?2003. We have identified 123 CIRs with forward and reverse shock or wave features in ACE and Wind data and have linked them to coronal holes shown in National Solar Observatory/Kitt Peak (NSO/KP) daily He i 10?830 Å maps considering the Sun?–?Earth transit time of the solar wind with the observed wind speed. A sample of 107 CH?–?CIR pairs is thus identified. We have examined the magnetic polarity, location, and area of the CHs as well as their association with geomagnetic storms (Dst≤?50 nT). For all pairs, the magnetic polarity of the CHs is found to be consistent with the sunward (or earthward) direction of the interplanetary magnetic fields (IMFs), which confirms the linkage between the CHs and the CIRs in the sample. Our statistical analysis shows that (1) the mean longitude of the center of CHs is about 8°E, (2) 74% of the CHs are located between 30°S and 30°N (i.e., mostly in the equatorial regions), (3) 46% of the CIRs are associated with geomagnetic storms, (4) the area of geoeffective coronal holes is found to be larger than 0.12% of the solar hemisphere area, and (5) the maximum convective electric field E y in the solar wind is much more highly correlated with the Dst index than any other solar or interplanetary parameter. In addition, we found that there is also a semiannual variation of CIR-associated geomagnetic storms and discovered new tendencies as follows: For negative-polarity coronal holes, the percentage (59%; 16 out of 27 events) of CIRs associated with geomagnetic storms in the first half of the year is much larger than that (25%; 6 out of 24 events) in the second half of the year and the occurrence percentage (63%; 15 out of 24 events) of CIR-associated storms in the southern hemisphere is significantly larger than that (26%; 7 out of 27 events) in the northern hemisphere. Positive-polarity coronal holes exhibit an opposite tendency.  相似文献

A solar wind parameter ε, known as the energy coupling function, has been shown to correlate with the power consumption in the magnetosphere. It is shown in the present paper that the parameter ε can be identified semi-quantitatively as the dynamo power delivered from the solar wind to an open magnetosphere. This identification not only provides a theoretical basis for the energy coupling function, but also constitutes an observational verification of the solar wind-magnetosphere dynamo along the magnetotail. Moreover, one can now conclude that a substorm results when the dynamo power exceeds 1018 ergs ?1.  相似文献

A high time resolution study of the relationship between the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling function ? and the total energy dissipation rate UT of the magnetosphere is made using 5-min average values of solar wind data and of the geomagnetic indices AE and Dst. All the results are essentially the same as those obtained by the earlier studies which were based on the hourly average data set. Therefore, we confirm that the magnetosphere is primarily a driven system.  相似文献

The behavior of a number of solar wind, radiation belt, auroral and geomagnetic parameters is examined during the recent extended solar minimum and previous solar cycles, covering the period from January 1972 to July 2010. This period includes most of the solar minimum between Cycles 23 and 24, which was more extended than recent solar minima, with historically low values of most of these parameters in 2009. Solar rotational periodicities from 5 to 27 days were found from daily averages over 81 days for the parameters. There were very strong 9-day periodicities in many variables in 2005?–?2008, triggered by recurring corotating high-speed streams (HSS). All rotational amplitudes were relatively large in the descending and early minimum phases of the solar cycle, when HSS are the predominant solar wind structures. There were minima in the amplitudes of all solar rotational periodicities near the end of each solar minimum, as well as at the start of the reversal of the solar magnetic field polarity at solar maximum (~?1980, ~?1990, and ~?2001) when the occurrence frequency of HSS is relatively low. Semiannual equinoctial periodicities, which were relatively strong in the 1995?–?1997 solar minimum, were found to be primarily the result of the changing amplitudes of the 13.5- and 27-day periodicities, where 13.5-day amplitudes were better correlated with heliospheric daily observations and 27-day amplitudes correlated better with Earth-based daily observations. The equinoctial rotational amplitudes of the Earth-based parameters were probably enhanced by a combination of the Russell-McPherron effect and a reduction in the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling efficiency during solstices. The rotational amplitudes were cross-correlated with each other, where the 27-day amplitudes showed some of the weakest cross-correlations. The rotational amplitudes of the >?2 MeV radiation belt electron number fluxes were progressively weaker from 27- to 5-day periods, showing that processes in the magnetosphere act as a low-pass filter between the solar wind and the radiation belt. The A p/K p magnetic currents observed at subauroral latitudes are sensitive to proton auroral precipitation, especially for 9-day and shorter periods, while the A p/K p currents are governed by electron auroral precipitation for 13.5- and 27-day periodicities.  相似文献

The geomagnetic Kp-index data for the 1932–1969 period have been investigated by means of a modified power spectrum technique on the basis of overlapping 2-yr intervals. The observed 27-, and 13.5-day periodicities show an obvious solar cycle dependence through the whole period concerned. Also, periodicities in the range of 9?4 days have been observed through years of minimum and decreasing phases of solar activity. The periodicities observed are found to be related to the existence of variations in the interplanetary medium structure which modulates the geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

An empirical model of thermospheric temperature (TT120, and s) and composition (H, He, N, O, N2, O2, and Ar) was derived from measurements of 8 satellites (AE-C, AE-E, AEROS-A, AEROS-B, ARIEL-3, ESRO-4, OGO-6, and SAN MARCO-3) and 4 incoherent scatter stations (Arecibo, Jicamarca, Millstone Hill, and St Santin). The altitude covered extends from 120 km up to about 600 km over the time period 1967 to 1976. The analytical framework used in the model resembles closely the MSIS setup: time independent terms, solar flux terms, geomagnetic activity (Kp) effect, annual (semiannual) and diurnal (semidiurnal, terdiurnal) variations, longitudinal terms, the U.T. effect, and corrections compensating for deviations from diffusive equilibrium at altitudes below 200 km. The model describes quiet to medium disturbed geomagnetic conditions (Kp ? 4) at solar fluxes (10.7cm) ranging from 60 to 180 × 10?22 Wm?2Hz?1. To get an impression of the accuracy presently obtained, the model is compared with MSIS, Jacchia (1977), and the models of Thuillier (T and Engebretson (N). The best agreement is found for the temperature and the constituents He, O, and N2 with increasing deviations in the order of H, N, Ar, and O2.  相似文献

We study the interplanetary features and concomitant geomagnetic activity of the two high-speed streams (HSSs) selected by the Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI) campaign participants: 20 March to 16 April 2008 in Carrington rotation (CR) 2068. This interval was chosen to perform a comprehensive study of HSSs and their geoeffectiveness during this ??deep?? solar minimum. The two HSSs within the interval were characterized by fast solar-wind speeds (peak values >?600 km?s?1) containing large-amplitude Alfvénic fluctuations, as is typical of HSSs during normal solar minima. However, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude [B o] was exceptionally low (??3??C?5 nT) during these HSSs, leading to lower than usual IMF B z values. The first HSS (HSS1) had favorable IMF polarity for geomagnetic activity (negative during northern Spring). The average AE and Dst for the HSS1 proper (HSS1P) were +?258 nT and ??21 nT, respectively. The second HSS (HSS2) had a positive sector IMF polarity, one that is less favorable for geomagnetic activity. The AE and Dst index averages were +?188 nT and ??7 nT, both lower than corresponding numbers for the first event, as expected. The HSS1P geomagnetic activity is comparable to, and the HSS2P geomagnetic activity lower than, corresponding observations for the previous minimum (1996). Both events?? geomagnetic activities are lower than HSS events previously studied in the declining phase (in 2003). In general, V sw was faster for the HSSs in 2008 compared to 1996. The southward IMF B z was lower in the former. The product of these two parameters [V sw and IMF B z ] comprises the solar-wind electric field, which is most directly associated with the energy input into the magnetosphere during the HSS intervals. Thus the combined effects led to the solar wind energy input in 2008 being slightly less than that in 1996. A detailed analysis of magnetic-field variances and Alfvénicity is performed to explore the characteristics of Alfvén waves (a central element in the geoeffectiveness of HSSs) during the WHI. The B z variances in the proto-CIR (PCIR) were ???30 nT2 and <?10 nT2 in the high speed streams proper.  相似文献

A three-dimensional, time-dependent model of thermospheric dynamics has been used to interpret recent experimental measurements of high altitude winds by rocket-borne and ground-based techniques. The model is global and includes a self-consistent treatment of the non-linear, Coriolis and viscosity terms. The solar u.v. and e.u.v. energy input provides the major energy source for the thermosphere. Solar u.v. and e.u.v. heating appear to be inadequate to explain observed thermospheric temperatures if e.u.v. heating efficiency (ε) lies in the range 0.3 < ε < 0.35. If the recent solar e.u.v. data are correct, then a value of ε between 0.4 and 0.45 would bring fluxes and observed temperatures into agreement. The Heppner (1977) and Volland (1978) models of high-latitude electric field are used to provide sources of both momentum (via ion drag) and energy (via Joule heating). We find that the Heppner Model CO (equivalent to Volland Model 1) is most appropriate for very quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp ? 2) while Model A (equivalent to Volland Model 2) provides the necessary enhancement at high latitudes for conditions of moderate activity (Kp ~ 4). Even with the addition of a polar electric field, there still appears to be a shortage of high-latitude energy input in that model winds tend to be 10 m s?1 poleward of observed winds under quiet or average geomagnetic conditions. This extra energy cannot be provided by enhancing the polar electric fields since the extra momentum would cause disagreement with the observed high latitude winds. High latitude particulate sources of relatively low energies, ~100 eV, seem the most likely candidates depositing their energy above about 200km. Relatively modest amounts of energy are then required, < 1010W global, to bring the model into agreement with both high- and mid-latitude neutral wind results.  相似文献

We study the solar sources of an intense geomagnetic storm of solar cycle 23 that occurred on 20 November 2003, based on ground- and space-based multiwavelength observations. The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) responsible for the above geomagnetic storm originated from the super-active region NOAA 10501. We investigate the H?? observations of the flare events made with a 15 cm solar tower telescope at ARIES, Nainital, India. The propagation characteristics of the CMEs have been derived from the three-dimensional images of the solar wind (i.e., density and speed) obtained from the interplanetary scintillation data, supplemented with other ground- and space-based measurements. The TRACE, SXI and H?? observations revealed two successive ejections (of speeds ???350 and ???100 km?s?1), originating from the same filament channel, which were associated with two high speed CMEs (???1223 and ???1660 km?s?1, respectively). These two ejections generated propagating fast shock waves (i.e., fast-drifting type II radio bursts) in the corona. The interaction of these CMEs along the Sun?CEarth line has led to the severity of the storm. According to our investigation, the interplanetary medium consisted of two merging magnetic clouds (MCs) that preserved their identity during their propagation. These magnetic clouds made the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) southward for a long time, which reconnected with the geomagnetic field, resulting the super-storm (Dst peak=?472 nT) on the Earth.  相似文献

The geomagnetic activity is the result of the solar wind–magnetosphere interaction. It varies following the basic 11-year solar cycle; yet shorter time-scale variations appear intermittently. We study the quasi-periodic behavior of the characteristics of solar wind (speed, temperature, pressure, density) and the interplanetary magnetic field (B x , B y , B z , β, Alfvén Mach number) and the variations of the geomagnetic activity indices (D ST, AE, A p and K p). In the analysis of the corresponding 14 time series, which span four solar cycles (1966?–?2010), we use both a wavelet expansion and the Lomb/Scargle periodograms. Our results verify intermittent periodicities in our time-series data, which correspond to already known solar activity variations on timescales shorter than the sunspot cycle; some of these are shared between the solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices.  相似文献

We report kinematic properties of slow interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) identified by SOHO/LASCO, interplanetary scintillation, and in situ observations and propose a modified equation for the ICME motion. We identified seven ICMEs between 2010 and 2011 and compared them with 39 events reported in our previous work. We examined 15 fast (V SOHO?V bg>500 km?s?1), 25 moderate (0 km?s?1V SOHO?V bg≤500 km?s?1), and 6 slow (V SOHO?V bg<0 km?s?1) ICMEs, where V SOHO and V bg are the initial speed of ICMEs and the speed of the background solar wind. For slow ICMEs, we found the following results: i) They accelerate toward the speed of the background solar wind during their propagation and reach their final speed by 0.34±0.03 AU. ii) The acceleration ends when they reach 479±126 km?s?1; this is close to the typical speed of the solar wind during the period of this study. iii) When γ 1 and γ 2 are assumed to be constants, a quadratic equation for the acceleration a=?γ 2(V?V bg)|V?V bg| is more appropriate than a linear one a=?γ 1(V?V bg), where V is the propagation speed of ICMEs, while the latter gives a smaller χ 2 value than the former. For the motion of the fast and moderate ICMEs, we found a modified drag equation a=?2.07×10?12(V?V bg)|V?V bg|?4.84×10?6(V?V bg). From the viewpoint of fluid dynamics, we interpret this equation as indicating that ICMEs with 0 km?s?1V?V bg≤2300 km?s?1 are controlled mainly by the hydrodynamic Stokes drag force, while the aerodynamic drag force is a predominant factor for the propagation of ICME with V?V bg>2300 km?s?1.  相似文献

The Solar Wind Energy Flux   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The solar-wind energy flux measured near the Ecliptic is known to be independent of the solar-wind speed. Using plasma data from Helios, Ulysses, and Wind covering a large range of latitudes and time, we show that the solar-wind energy flux is independent of the solar-wind speed and latitude within 10?%, and that this quantity varies weakly over the solar cycle. In other words the energy flux appears as a global solar constant. We also show that the very high-speed solar wind (V SW>700?km?s?1) has the same mean energy flux as the slower wind (V SW<700?km?s?1), but with a different histogram. We use this result to deduce a relation between the solar-wind speed and density, which formalizes the anti-correlation between these quantities.  相似文献

We report radial-speed evolution of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) detected by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/LASCO), interplanetary scintillation (IPS) at 327 MHz, and in-situ observations. We analyze solar-wind disturbance factor (g-value) data derived from IPS observations during 1997?–?2009 covering nearly the whole period of Solar Cycle 23. By comparing observations from SOHO/LASCO, IPS, and in situ, we identify 39 ICMEs that could be analyzed carefully. Here, we define two speeds [V SOHO and V bg], which are the initial speed of the ICME and the speed of the background solar wind, respectively. Examinations of these speeds yield the following results: i) Fast ICMEs (with V SOHO?V bg>500 km?s?1) rapidly decelerate, moderate ICMEs (with 0 km?s?1V SOHO?V bg≤500 km?s?1) show either gradually decelerating or uniform motion, and slow ICMEs (with V SOHO?V bg<0 km?s?1) accelerate. The radial speeds converge on the speed of the background solar wind during their outward propagation. We subsequently find; ii) both the acceleration and the deceleration are nearly complete by 0.79±0.04 AU, and those are ended when the ICMEs reach a 480±21 km?s?1. iii) For ICMEs with (V SOHO?V bg)≥0 km?s?1, i.e. fast and moderate ICMEs, a linear equation a=?γ 1(V?V bg) with γ 1=6.58±0.23×10?6 s?1 is more appropriate than a quadratic equation a=?γ 2(V?V bg)|V?V bg| to describe their kinematics, where γ 1 and γ 2 are coefficients, and a and V are the acceleration and speed of ICMEs, respectively, because the χ 2 for the linear equation satisfies the statistical significance level of 0.05, while the quadratic one does not. These results support the assumption that the radial motion of ICMEs is governed by a drag force due to interaction with the background solar wind. These findings also suggest that ICMEs propagating faster than the background solar wind are controlled mainly by the hydrodynamic Stokes drag.  相似文献

A ring current model has been obtained which permits calculations ofDst variations on the Earth's surface during magnetic storms. The changes in Dst are described by the equation
ddtDsto = F(EM)?Dstotau;
where Dsto = Dst-bp12+~tc; p = mnv2 is solar wind pressure; F(EM) is the function, controlled by the electromagnetic parameters of interplanetary medium, of injection into ring current ; τ is the constant of ring current decay. C = Cuτ?=18 nT, where C is the level of the Dst-variation field measurements; ? is the injection function characterizing the quasisteady-state injection of energy into the ring-current region. The constant Ç is determined from the condition that the change of the ring current energy from magnetic storm commencement to end should equal the difference between the injected and dissipated energy throughout the storm. The values of the factors b and τ were found by the method of minimizing the sum of the quadratic deviations of the calculated Dst from the values observed throughout the storm : b = 0.23 nT/(eV cm?3)12, τ = 8.2 h at Dst? ? 55 nT and τ = 5.8 h at -120 ? Dst ? — 55 nT. The injection function F(EM) is of the form F(EM) = d(Ey? A) at the values of the azimuthal component of the solar wind electric field Ey ? A, and F(EM) =0 at A?Ey.d = ? 1.2 × 10?3 Ts?1 (mV/m)?1 and A = ? 0.9 mV m?1 . Thus, the injection to ring current is possible at the northward Bz component of the IMF.  相似文献

This paper presents a correlative study between the peak values of geomagnetic activity indices (Dst, Kp, ap and AE) and the peak values of various interplanetary field (Bt, Bz, E and σB) and plasma (T, D, V, P and β) parameters along with their various products (BV, BzV and B2V) during intense geomagnetic storms (GMSs) for rising, maximum and decay phases as well as for complete solar cycle 23. The study leads to the conclusion that the peak values of different geomagnetic activity indices are in good correlation with Bt, Bz, σB, V, E, BV, BzV and B2V, therefore these parameters are most useful for predicting GMSs and substorms. These parameters are also reliable indicators of the strength of GMSs. We have also presented the lag/lead time analysis between the maximum of Dst and peak values of geomagnetic activity indices, various interplanetary field/plasma parameters for all GMSs. We have found that the average of peak values of geomagnetic activity indices and various field/plasma parameters are larger in decay phase compare to rising and maximum phases of cycle 23. Our analyses show that average values of lag/lead time lie in the ≈?4.00 h interval for Kp, ap and AE indices as well as for Bt, Bz, σB, E, D and P. For a more meaningful analysis we have also presented the above study for two different groups G1 (CME-driven GMSs) and G2 (CIR-driven GMSs) separately. Correlation coefficients between various interplanetary field/plasma parameters, their various products and geomagnetic activity indices for G1 and G2 groups show different nature. Three GMSs and associated solar sources observed during three different phases of this solar cycle have also been studied and it is found that GMSs are associated with large flares, halo CMEs and their active regions are close to the solar equator.  相似文献

A model is developed to represent a toroidal mode of Pc5 geomagnetic pulsations. It is shown that this model is consistent in its predictions, such as the latitude profiles of amplitude and phase and their dependence on the height integrated Pedersen conductivity, Σp, with those of Walker's (1980) theory. It is also shown that this theory is relatively easily capable of accommodating (i) a variety of field line plasma mass density distributions, (ii) a variety of external excitation schemes, (iii) unequal Σp's at each end of the field lines and (iv) non-dipolar geomagnetic fields. The theory yields the transient as well as the steady state response, an important feature permitting application to short-lived events or to those for which the generator is amplitude modulated. It is shown, for instance, that the amplitude-latitude profile varies during the transient. It is also shown that the steady state latitude profiles of amplitude and phase are the dual of those observed as a function of frequency when the excitation frequency is scanned through a resonance. A more realistic steady state energy flow from a generator along the field lines to the ionosphere is inherent in this theory compared with that from the mode to the ionosphere which is inherent in Walker's theory.  相似文献
