An intense, localized auroral disturbance observed by Intercosmos-Bulgaria-1300 satellite in the morning sector at the altitude 850 km is analyzed in detail. The disturbance is characterized by strong “jumps” of electric and magnetic fields reaching ~ 80 mV/m and ~ 100 nT, fluctuations of ion density (Δn/n ~ 70%) and bursts of downward and upward energetic electron fluxes. Electric and magnetic disturbances display a distinct spatial-temporal relationship typical for the standing quasi-monochromatic wave (? ~ 1 Hz, λx ~ 10 km). The ratio of amplitudes of electric and magnetic fluctuations is equal to Alfvén velocity (ΔE/ΔBvA/c). However, a strong parallel component of the electric field (~ 30 mV/m) and large ion density fluctuations indicate significant changes of plasma properties (the effects of anomalous resistivity are possible).  相似文献

An attempt has been made to estimate the east-west component (Ew) of the magnetospheric equatorial electric field near L = 1.12 during a magnetic storm period from the whistlers observed at our low latitude ground station, Nainital (geomag.lat. 19°1'N), on March 25, 1971 in the 0130–0500 IST sector. The method of measuring Ew from the observed cross L-motions of whistler ducts within the plasmasphere, indicated by changes in nose frequency of whistlers, has been outlined. The nose frequencies of non-nose whistlers under consideration have been deduced from Dowden-Allcock linear Q-technique. The variation of (?n)23 with local time has been shown, the slope of which can be directly related to the convection electric field. The estimated equatorial electric field at L? 1.12 is in the range 0.1–0.5 mV m?1 (in the 0130–0500 IST sector) during a storm period, which is in agreement with the results reported by earlier workers. The departure from a dipole field and the contribution of an induced electric field from the temporal changes have been discussed. The importance of an electric field study has been indicated.  相似文献

Daytime Pc 3–4 pulsation activities observed at globally coordinated low-latitude stations [SGC (L = 1.8,λ = 118.0°W), EWA(1.15,158.1°W), ONW(1.3,141.5°E)] are evidently controlled by the cone angle θXB of the IMF observed at ISEE 3. Moreover, the Pc 3–4 frequencies (?) at the low latitudes and high latitude (COL; L = 5.6 and λ = 147.9°W) on the ground and that of compressional waves at geosynchronous orbit (GOES 2; L = 6.67 and λ = 106.7°W) are also correlated with the IMFmagnitude(BIMF).The correlation of ? of the compressional Pc 3–4 waves at GOES 2 against BIMF is higher than those of the Pc 3–4 pulsations at the globally coordinated ground stations, i.e., γ = 0.70 at GOES 2, and (0.36,0.60,0.66,0.54) at (COL, SGC, EWA, ONW), respectively. The standard deviation (σn = ± Δ? mHz) of the observed frequencies from the form ? (mHz) = 6.0 × BIMF (nT) is larger at the ground stations than at GOES 2, i.e., Δ? = ± 6.6 mHz atGOES 2, and ±(13.9, 9.1, 10.7, 12.1) mHz at (COL, SGC, EWA, ONW), respectively. The correlations between the IMF magnitude BIMF and Pc 3–4 frequencies at the low latitudes are higher than that at the high latitude on the ground, which can be interpreted by a “filtering action” of the magnetosphere for daytime Pc 3–4 magnetic pulsations. The scatter plots of pulsation frequency ? against the IMF magnitude BIMF for the compressional Pc 3–4 waves at GOES 2 are restricted within the forms ? = 4.5 × BIMFand ? = 7.5 × BIMF. The frequency distribution is in excellent agreement with the speculation (scΩi = 0.3 ~ 0.5) of the spacecraft frame frequency of the magnetosonic right-hand waves excited by the anomalous ion cyclotron resonance with reflected ion beams with V6 = 650 ~ 1150 km s?1 in the solar wind frame observed by the ISEE satellite in the Earth's foreshock. These observational results suggest that the magnetosonic right-handed waves excited by the reflected ion beams in the Earth's foreshock are convected through the magnetosheath to the magnetopause, transmitted into the magnetosphere without significant changes in spectra, and then couple with various HM waves in the Pc 3–4 frequency range at various locations in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

An expression for the vertical velocity of the neutral atmosphere in the F-region is derived for Joule heating by the electric field that drives the auroral electrojet. When only vertical expansion is allowed, it is found that the vertical wind must always increase monotonically with altitude. The heating rate is proportional to the F-region ion density, so that appreciable heating, even during high electric fields, requires some production mechanism of ionization such as auroral secondary ionization or solar photoionization, in the lower F-region. Once started at night, when an ionizing source is present in the lower F-region, the expansion of the atmosphere transports ionization upward, thereby increasing the heating rate, and hence the expansion rate, i.e. positive feedback. Electric field strengths and F-region ion densities of 50 mV/m and 2 × 1011e/m3, respectively, will produce vertal neutral wind speeds of several tens of m/sec in the 300–500 km altitude range. During periods of high magnetic activity, i.e. high electric field, Joule heating can produce large increases in the relative N2 concentration in the upper F-region; computations made with a simple model suggest that tenfold increases can occur at 400 km altitude 12?1 hr after the onset of magnetic activity, a result in agreement with satellite observations. When the Joule heating theory is applied to incoherent scatter data taken during one period of high heating, the horizontal electric field in the F-region is found to decrease markedly, possibly approaching zero as the field penetrates a weak, discrete auroral arc; the decrease began 10–20 km from the arc.  相似文献

Monte Carlo calculations of the expansion of space-faring civilizations are presented for a wide range of values of the population growth coefficient (α) and emigration coefficient (γ). Even for the very low values proposed by Newman and Sagan (α = 10?4per year; γ = 10?8per year) the migration wavefront expands at 1.4 × 10?5 pc per year. Even with this low expansion velocity, such a civilization would fill the Galaxy in about 109 years. Filling times of the order of 60 million years seem probable. The wavefront velocity is approximated by υ = Δr[(Δxυs) + (1α) ln(γ)], where Δr is the average radial distance traveled, δx the average distance traveled, and υs the ship speed. This approximation was derived by Newman.  相似文献

Whistlers recorded at Eights (L ? 4) and Byrd (f ? 7), Antarctica have been used to study large-scale structure in equatorial plasma density at geocentric distances ?3–6 RE. The observations were made during conditions of magnetic quieting following moderate disturbance. The structures were detected by a “scanning” process involving relative motion, at about one tenth of the Earth's angular velocity or greater, between the observed density features and the observing whistler station or stations. Three case studies are described, from 26 March 1965, 11 May 1965 and 29 August 1966. The cases support satellite results by showing outlying high density regions at ?4–6 RE that are separated from the main plasmasphere by trough-like depressions ranging in width from ?0.2 to 1 RE. The structures evidently endured for periods of 12 hr or more. In the cases of deepest quieting their slow east-west motions with respect to the Earth are probably of dynamo origin. The cases observed during deep quieting (11 May 1965 and 29 August 1966) suggest the approximate rotation with the Earth of structure formed during previous moderate disturbance activity in the dusk sector. The third case, from 26 March 1965, may represent a structure formed near local midnight. The reported structures appear to be closely related to the bulge phenomenon. The present work supports other experimental and theoretical evidence that the dusk sector is one of major importance in the generation of outlying density structure. It is inferred that irregularities of the type reported here regularly develop near 4–5 RE during moderate substorm activity. This research suggests that at least a major class of the density structures that develop near 4 RE are tail-like in nature, joined to the main body of the plasmasphere. The apparent disagreement with Chappell's results from OGO 5, which are interpreted as showing regions of “detached” plasma beyond 5 RE, may be related to the pronounced spatial structure of electric fields observed in high-latitude ionospheric regions that are conjugate to the magnetospheric regions in which the OGO-5 observations were made.  相似文献

An outline is presented of a method of calculating relative rates of association of oxygen atoms by energy transfer into the different bound states of molecular oxygen. The method takes account of the detailed form of the potential energy curves for the different states. Results are presented for seven bound states of O2 at temperatures between 100 and 600 K and are compared with laboratory and airglow data. The 5Πg state, not known experimentally, accounts for over 70% of the total association below 200 K. At higher temperatures it is redissociated, and the variation in its effective association rate is primarily responsible for the variation of the total rate of oxygen association with temperature. The 5Πg state is probably involved in the production at night of the a1Δg and b1Σg+ states of O2, and in the production of O(1S) in the airglow. It may also be produced by electron impact on O2, and contribute to O(1S) production in aurorae.  相似文献

The possibility of investigation of the cosmic plasma dynamics by the radio interference technique based on a finite time of radio wave propagation between the sounding and responding stations is shown. By locating the sounding station on a spacecraft the greatest contribution to the phase difference ΔΦ(t)or the phase difference growth rate Δ? between the sounding and response signals are caused by disturbances in close proximity to the spacecraft. This method permits interplanetary shock waves and tangential discontinuities to be registered and the velocities and plasma density changes on their fronts to be determined. By using experimental data of ΔΦ(t) or Δ?(t) one can also obtain information about plasma concentration jump, location and motion of bow shock wave and magnetopause and plasmapause. Available experimental data about different disturbances of cosmic plasma were analysed and the requirements on frequency stability of spacecraft-borne and groundbased radio equipment were estimated to register those disturbances. In most cases relative stability 10?11–10?13 provided by present atomic frequency standards is sufficient.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical model was developed with the goal of studying limited dynamical problems relevant to the latest stage of planet growth in the accretion theory. A small number of large protoplanets (~ Moon size) of different masses, moving around the Sun, are considered. The dynamical evolution and growth of the population is studied under mutual gravitational perturbations, accretion, and collisional fragmentation processes. Gravitational encounters are treated exactly by numerical integration of the N-body problem. Outcomes of collisional fragmentation are modeled according to the results of R. Greenberg et al. (1978, Icarus, 35, 1–26). In the present work, we consider 25 protoplanets with uniform mass distribution in the range 2 × 1025?4 × 1026 g on heliocentric orbits in the Earth zone. These bodies are initially confined to a small volume of space to permit gravitational perturbations by close approaches and collisions within a finite length of integration time. The dynamical evolution of the swarm is followed for four different sets of initial ranges in semimajor axis, eccentricity, and inclination: Δa=0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08 AU; Δe= 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04; Δi=0°3, 0°6, 1°2, 2°4. Among other results, it is found that average eccentricities and inclinations evolve toward a steady state such that i ? 12, e; it is also found that, whatever the initial conditions, the population evolves toward a quasi-equilibrium relative velocity distribution corresponding to a Safronov parameter value θ?10. Moreover, the growth process of the growing planet presents very similar behavior in the four cases considered, except for the time scale of evolution, which increases with the initial range of orbital elements. Earlier works of this kind have been presented by L.P. Cox and J.S. Lewis (1980, Icarus, 44, 706–721) and by G.N. Wetherill (1980b, In Geol. Soc. Canad. Spec. Publ., p. 20), although a number of differences exist between the three approaches.  相似文献

The basis for “quasipolar” absorption (QPA) by CH4 is the existence of a small electric dipole moment in its ground state. The integrated intensity αQPA at a temperature of 90K is calculated to be between 4.8 × 10?5 and 1.9 × 10?2 cm?2 atm?1. With an assumed mean pressure of 0.1 atm and a relative abundance of [CH4][H2] = 1, it is estimated that the ratio of quasipolar to pressure-induced absorption (PIA) is 0.05 ? αQPA/αPIA ? 18 for the spectral range from 0 to 300 cm?1. This result suggests that quasipolar absorption may contribute to a weak, CH4-induced greenhouse in the atmosphere of Titan.  相似文献

The temperature and density of the plasma in the Earth's distant plasma sheet at the downstream distances of about 20–25 Re are examined during a high geomagnetic disturbance period. It is shown that the plasma sheet cools when magnetospheric substorm expansion is indicated by the AE index. During cooling, the plasma sheet temperature, T, and the number density, N, are related by T ∝ N23 (adiabatic process) in some instances, while by TN?1 (isobaric process) in other cases. The total plasma and magnetic pressure decreases when T ∝ N23 and increases when TN?1. Observation also indicates that the dawn-dusk component of plasma flow is frequently large and comparable to the sunward-tailward flow component near the central plasma sheet during substorms.  相似文献

It is shown that Titan's surface and plausible atmospheric thermal opacity sources—gaseous N2, CH4, and H2, CH4 cloud, and organic haze—are sufficient to match available Earth-based and Voyager observations of Titan's thermal emission spectrum. Dominant sources of thermal emission are the surface for wavelenghts λ ? 1 cm, atmospheric N2 for 1 cm ? λ ? 200 μm,, condensed and gaseous CH4 for 200 μm ? λ ? 20 μm, and molecular bands and organic haze for λ ? 20 μm. Matching computed spectra to the observed Voyager IRIS spectra at 7.3 and 52.7° emission angles yields the following abundances and locations of opacity sources: CH4 clouds: 0.1 g cm? at a planetocentric radius of 2610–2625 km, 0.3 g cm?2 at 2590–2610 km, total 0.4 ± 0.1 g cm–2 above 2590 km; organic haze: 4 ± 2 × 10?6, g cm, ?2 above 2750 km; tropospheric H2: 0.3 ± 0.1 mol%. This is the first quantitative estimate of the column density of condensed methane (or CH4/C2H6) on Titan. Maximum transparency in the middle to far IR occurs at 19 μm where the atmospheric vertical absorption optical depth is ?0.6 A particle radius r ? 2 μm in the upper portion of the CH4 cloud is indicated by the apparent absence of scattering effects.  相似文献

The ionospheric electric field has been measured in the E region above the Churchill auroral research range under quiet and under disturbed conditions. Results were obtained 112 and 212 hr before local midnight over an altitude range of 115–165 km. The instruments and analysis differ from those used by other workers. An unusually advantageous vehicle motion resulted in dipole measurements along the magnetic field being modulated by the vehicle motion. Under quiet conditions and in the presence of a diffuse, east-west 2 kR auroral arc, the predominant vector component of the electric field was also quiet and between 35 and 40 mVm perpendicular to the magnetic field, southward. Parallel to the magnetic field, the vector component increased from ?17 mV/m at 130 km, reversed direction at 160 km during the latter third of the flight and fluctuated around + 6 mV/m between 155 and 135 km on the descent. Under disturbed conditions during the recovery phase of a large magnetic storm, the electric field was also more disturbed; however, there was no significant electric field along B. Analysis of effects caused when parts of the measurement system are connected by a common magnetic field line, and when one of the probes lies in the wake of the vehicle, shows that measurement perturbations produced by those effects are dominated by the magnetic field line connections and that wake effects are relatively unimportant.  相似文献

Recent progress in modeling ionospheric current systems requires global conductivity models which can reflect substorm conditions on an instantaneous basis. For this purpose, empirical relations of the North-South component (ΔH) of the magnetic disturbance field observed at College with the Pedersen (Σp) and Hall (ΣH) conductivities deduced from the Chatanika radar data and their ratio (ΣHΣp) are examined. These empirical formulas allow us to construct approximate distribution patterns of Σp and Σ>H over the entire polar region on the basis of the distribution of ΔH at given instants by devising an appropriate weighting function for both the polar cap and the subauroral region. The global conductivity distributions thus obtained are compared with those employed by Kamide et al. (1981) and Spiro et al. (1982). The comparisons show that the gross features are similar among them. In addition, we also examine the relationship of ΔH with the North-South component of the electric field with the particle energy injection rate (uA) estimated from the Chatanika radar data. Based on the empirical relation between ΣH and uA the global distribution of the latter over the entire polar region at particular instants can also be obtained.  相似文献

New characteristics of VLF chorus in the outer magnetosphere are reported. The study is based on more than 400 hours of broadband (0.3–12.5 kHz) data collected by the Stanford University/Stanford Research Institute VLF experiment on OGO 3 during 1966–1967. Bandlimited emissions constitute the dominant form of whistler-mode radiation in the region 4? L? 10. Magnetospheric chorus occurs mainly from 0300 to 1500 LT, at higher L at noon than at dawn, and moves to lower L during geomagnetic disturbance, in accord with ground observations of VLF chorus. Occurrence is moderate near the equator, lower near 15°, and maximum at high latitudes (far down the field lines). The centre frequency ? of the chorus band varies as L?3> and at low latitudes is closely related to the electron gyrofrequency on the dipole field line through the satellite. Based on the measured local gyrofrequency ?H, the normalized frequency distribution of chorus observed within 10° of the dipole equator shows two peaks, at ??H ? 0.53 and ??H ? 0.34. This bimodal distribution is a persistent statistical feature of near equatorial chorus, independent of L, LT and Kp. However there is considerable variability in individual events, with chorus often observed above, below, and between these statistical peaks; in particular, it is not unusual for single emissions to cross ??H = 0.50. When two bands are simultaneously present individual emission elements only rarely show one-to-one correlation between bands. For low Kp the median bandwidth of the upper band, gap and lower band are all ~16% of their centre frequencies, independent of L; for higher Kp the bandwidth of the lower band increases. Bandwidth also increases with latitude beyond ~10°. Starting frequencies of narrowband emissions range throughout the band. The majority of the emissions rise in frequency at a rate between 0.2 and 2.0 kHz/sec; this rate increases with Kp and decreases with L. Falling tones are rarely observed at dipole latitudes <2.5°. The observations are interpreted in terms of whistler-mode propagation theory and a gyroresonant feedback interaction model. An exact expression is derived for the critical frequency, ??H ? 0.5, at which the curvature of the refractive index surface vanishes at zero wave normal angle. Near this frequency rays with initial wave normal angles between 0° and ?20° are focused along the initial field line for thousands of km, enhancing the phase-bunching of incoming gyroresonant electrons. The upper peak in the bimodal normalized frequency distribution is attributed to this enhancement near the critical frequency, at latitudes of ~5°. Slightly below the critical frequency interference between modes with different ray velocities may contribute to the dip in the bimodal distribution. The lower peak may reflect a corresponding peak in the resonant electron distribution, or guiding in field-aligned density irregularities. The observations are consistent with gyroresonant generation of emissions near the equator, followed by spreading of the radiation over a range of L shells farther down the field lines.  相似文献

A ring current model has been obtained which permits calculations ofDst variations on the Earth's surface during magnetic storms. The changes in Dst are described by the equation
ddtDsto = F(EM)?Dstotau;
where Dsto = Dst-bp12+~tc; p = mnv2 is solar wind pressure; F(EM) is the function, controlled by the electromagnetic parameters of interplanetary medium, of injection into ring current ; τ is the constant of ring current decay. C = Cuτ?=18 nT, where C is the level of the Dst-variation field measurements; ? is the injection function characterizing the quasisteady-state injection of energy into the ring-current region. The constant Ç is determined from the condition that the change of the ring current energy from magnetic storm commencement to end should equal the difference between the injected and dissipated energy throughout the storm. The values of the factors b and τ were found by the method of minimizing the sum of the quadratic deviations of the calculated Dst from the values observed throughout the storm : b = 0.23 nT/(eV cm?3)12, τ = 8.2 h at Dst? ? 55 nT and τ = 5.8 h at -120 ? Dst ? — 55 nT. The injection function F(EM) is of the form F(EM) = d(Ey? A) at the values of the azimuthal component of the solar wind electric field Ey ? A, and F(EM) =0 at A?Ey.d = ? 1.2 × 10?3 Ts?1 (mV/m)?1 and A = ? 0.9 mV m?1 . Thus, the injection to ring current is possible at the northward Bz component of the IMF.  相似文献

The development of an auroral absorption substorm has been studied using riometer measurements in the northern hemisphere. In the events studied, the onset is preceded by an absorption bay which begins to develop 1?112h before the onset. The bay may occur between L-values 3–19 and can cover as much as 150° of geomagnetic longitude, generally in the same longitudinal sector where the substorm breaks up and to the west of it. Whereas the substorm breaks up at or near the midnight meridian, the preceding bay may, in some geophysical conditions, appear in the afternoon sector. The preceding bay moves southward with a velocity between 60 and 600 ms?1, intensifying during the movement. This equatorward movement is consistent with an E × B drift in a cross-magnetotail electric field of between 0.5 and 1 mV m?1. The absorption at the onset exceeds that in the bay, and in the sector of break up the absorption shows a minimum just before the onset; to the west-of the break up the preceding bay continues its southward movement. In 14 cases studied, the sharp onset moved to the west with a velocity of 1–31 km s?1, median 6 km s?1. The onset was seen at higher L-values to the west than in the break-up sector. This applied also to the preceding bay. Whereas most onsets showed westward movement, in only about half of the cases studied was there movement towards the east. The injection area affected during the first minute of the onset was typically 1–2 L-value units, but as much as 30° of geomagnetic longitude. The onset later spread to cover 1–10 L-value units, and up to 130° of longitude. The contouring method used in the analysis of the data from the riometer is described in the Appendix.  相似文献

A numerical model of current F-region theory is use to calculate the diurnal variation of the mid-latitude ionospheric F-region over Millstone Hill on 23–24 March 1970, during quiet geomagnetic conditions. From the solar EUV flux, the model calculates at each altitude and time step primary photoelectron spectra and ionization rates of various ion species. The photoelectron transport equation is solved for the secondary ionization rates, photoelectron spectra, and various airglow excitation rates. Five ion continuity equations that include the effects of transport by diffusion, magnetospheric-ionospheric plasma transport, electric fields, and neutral winds are solved for the ion composition and electron density. The electron and ion temperatures are also calculated using the heating rates determined from chemical reactions, photoelectron collisions, and magnetospheric-ionospheric energy transport. The calculations are performed for a diurnal cycle considering a stationary field tube co-rotating with the Earth; only the vertical plasma drift caused by electric fields perpendicular to the geomagnetic field line is allowed but not the horizontal drift. The boundary conditions used in the model are determined from the incoherent scatter radar measurements of Te, Ti and O+ flux at 800km over Millstone Hill (Evans, 1971a). The component of the neutral thermospheric winds along the geomagnetic field has an important influence on the overall ionospheric structure. It is determined from a separate dynamic model of the neutral thermosphere, using incoherent scatter radar measurements. The calculated diurnal variation of the ionospheric structure agrees well with the values measured by the incoherent scatter radar when certain restrictions are placed on the solar EUV flux and model neutral atmospheric compositions. Namely, the solar EUV fluxes of Hinteregger (1970) are doubled and an atomic oxygen concentration of at least 1011cm3 at 120 km is required for the neutral model atmosphere. Calculations also show that the topside thermal structure of the ionosphere is primarily maintained by a flow of heat from the magnetosphere and the night-time F2-region is maintained in part by neutral winds, diffusion, electric fields, and plasma flow from the magnetosphere. The problem of maintaining the calculated night-time ionosphere at the observed values is also discussed.  相似文献

Partial reflection radiowave wind observations have been made continuously at Saskatoon for 1 year (September 1978–August 1979). The winds have been obtained in real-time from a twin micro-processor system, that produces profiles (32 heights from 49 to 142km) at 5-min intervals: daytime/night-time profiles normally involve values from 6070 to 120 km.These data have been analyzed to give the daily mean wind and the amplitudes and phases of planetary, tidal (24, 12 h) and internal gravity (I.G.) waves (0.20 ? τ ? 6h). There are oscillations in the mean daily wind, with periods of 2–30 days: the disturbance from 60 to 100 km caused by the stratwarm of February and March is documented. The characteristics of the semi-diurnal tide undergo significant changes in vertical wavelength and time of maxima between summer months (May–August) and winter months (November–February): during summer the S22 mode (λz ? 150km) seems to dominate, and in other months a mixture of modes (λz ? 50km) exist. The diurnal tide is less regular, but during winter and spring λz ? 30–60 km, and for other months is very large, suggesting the S?11 mode. Energy densities and scale heights (h0) are given, and the relative magnitudes of these for the various waves are discussed with respect to height and season: there is a general trend for the growth of the wave amplitude with height (shown by h0) to increase in the order planetary, tidal and I.G. waves (h0, ~3–15 km): largest values are in winter and spring. Wave energies are largest in winter, decrease during spring and increase throughout late summer and fall.  相似文献
