In this paper, we discuss a rigorous treatment of the refractive scintillation caused by a two-component interstellar scattering medium and a Kolmogorov form of density spectrum. It is assumed that the interstellar scattering medium is composed of a thin-screen interstellar medium (ISM) and an extended interstellar medium. We consider the case that the scattering of the thin screen concentrates in a thin layer represented by a δ function distribution and that the scattering density of the extended irregular medium satisfies the Gaussian distribution. We investigate and develop equations for the flux density structure function corresponding to this two-component ISM geometry in the scattering density distribution and compare our result with the observations. We conclude that the refractive scintillation caused by this two-component ISM scattering gives a more satisfactory explanation for the observed flux density variation than does the single extended medium model. The level of refractive scintillation is strongly sensitive to the distribution of scattering material along the line of sight (LOS). The theoretical modulation indices are comparatively less sensitive to the scattering strength of the thin-screen medium, but they critically depend on the distance from the observer to the thin screen. The logarithmic slope of the structure function is sensitive to the scattering strength of the thin-screen medium, but is relatively insensitive to the thin-screen location. Therefore, the proposed model can be applied to interpret the structure functions of flux density observed in pulsar PSR B2111 + 46 and PSR B0136 + 57. The result suggests that the medium consists of a discontinuous distribution of plasma turbulence embedded in the interstellar medium. Thus our work provides some insight into the distribution of the scattering along the LOS to the pulsar PSR B2111 + 46 and PSR B0136 + 57.  相似文献

Spectra of an Ellerman bomb in the NOAA 11024 active region were obtained in spectropolarimetric observations with the French–Italian THEMIS telescope (Tenerife, Spain). The variations of profiles of the Stokes parameters I, Q, U, and V of photospheric lines were analyzed. The chosen lines had different intensities and magnetic-field sensitivities. It was found that the photospheric line profiles in the Ellerman bomb spectra differed greatly from the profiles for the quiet photosphere outside the active region. The Stokes I profiles of photospheric lines in the Ellerman bomb spectra were much weaker. The largest values of the Stokes parameters Q, U, and V were derived for the Fe I λ 630.25 nm magnetosensitive line. The Stokes parameter V was the highest in the central region of the Ellerman bomb, while the maximum Q and U parameters were observed at one of the edges of the Ellerman bomb. It follows from the comparison of the Stokes parameters for the Ellerman bomb and microflares that the Q, U, and V parameters for the bomb are much higher than those for flares.  相似文献

Theoretical line contours calculated for fixed values of the line constants and a given model atmosphere show an increase of the Stokes parameters Q, U, and V but a decrease of I if the portion of non-coherent scattering increases. These effects increase from the centre of the solar disk to the limb. The action of scattering may be approximately simulated in LTE contours by increasing the gradient of the source function and fitting in this way theoretical contours to observed ones. There remains, however, the effect of V-reversal near the line core, which is caused by anomalous dispersion and is abnormally increased by scattering.  相似文献

We have detected giant pulses from the millisecond pulsar PSR B1937+214 at the lowest frequency of 112 MHz. The observed flux density at the pulse peak is ~40 000 Jy, which exceeds the average level by a factor of 600. Pulses of such intensity occur about once per 300 000 periods. The brightness temperature of the observed giant pulses is T B≈1035 K. We estimated the pulse broadening by interstellar scattering to be τsc=3–10 ms. Based on this estimate and on published high-frequency measurements of this parameter, we determined the frequency dependence of the pulse broadening by scattering: τsc(f)=25 × (f/100)?4.0±02.  相似文献

Time series of 2-dimensional spectro-polarmetric data were obtained with the intent of studying the temporal behavior of velocity, magnetic flux, and characteristics of the Stokes V profile in a small region of a larger sunspot. Full Stokes profiles in I, Q, U, and V were obtained. Velocity oscillations were found at frequencies of 3.3 mHz in each of the profiles. Acoustic power maps indicate that locations of highest power correspond to areas in which the polarization signal was greatest, therefore no conclusion about the type of wave mode participating in the oscillations can be made. Velocity amplitudes were I: 71 m s–1, Q: 47 m s–1, U: 65 m s–1 and V: 86 m s–1. Oscillatory behavior was also detected in longitudinal field strength, with an r.m.s. amplitude of 22 G, at 2.6 and 3.3 mHz. The power was localized at the umbral/penumbral boundary. A phase analysis indicates a –130° phase difference with Stokes V velocity oscillations at 3.3 mHz and a 75° difference at 2.6 mHz. Results are consistent with magnetic field lines swaying in response to a p-mode driver. No oscillatory behavior was seen in Stokes V asymmetry or amplitude splitting.  相似文献

Polarized intensity and polarization angles are calculated from Stokes parameters Q and U in a nonlinear way. The statistical properties of polarized emission hold information about the structure of magnetic fields in a large range of scales, but the contributions of different stages of data processing to the statistical properties should first be understood. We use 1.4 GHz polarization data from the Effelsberg 100‐m telescope of emission in the Galactic plane, near the plane and far out of the plane. We analyze the probability distribution function and the wavelet spectrum of the original maps in Stokes parameters Q, U and corresponding PI. Then we apply absolute calibration (i.e. adding the large‐scale emission to the maps in Q and U), subtraction of polarized sources and subtraction of the positive bias in PI due to noise (“denoising”). We show how each procedure affects the statistical properties of the data. We find a complex behavior of the statistical properties for the different regions analyzed which depends largely on the intensity level of polarized emission. Absolute calibration changes the morphology of the polarized structures. The statistical properties change in a complex way: Compact sources in the field flatten the wavelet spectrum over a substantial range. Adding large‐scale emission does not change the spectral slopes in Q and U at small scales, but changes the PI spectrum in a complex way. “Denoising” significantly changes the p.d.f. of PI and raises the entire spectrum. The final spectra are flat in the Galactic plane due to magnetic structures in the ISM, but steeper at high Galactic latitude and in the anticenter. For a reliable study of the statistical properties of magnetic fields and turbulence in the ISM based on radio polarization observations, absolute calibration and source subtraction are required. The paper presents a new class of parametric interior solutions of Einstein–Maxwell field equations in general relativity for a static spherically symmetric distribution of a charged perfect fluid with a particular form of electric field intensity. This solution gives us wide range of parameter, K (0.69≤K≤7.1), for which the solution is well behaved hence, suitable for modeling of superdense star. For this solution the gravitational mass of a superdense object is maximized with all degree of suitability by assuming the surface density of the star equal to the normal nuclear density ρ nm=2.5×1017kg?m?3. By this model we obtain the mass of the Crab pulsar M Crab=1.401M and the radius, R Crab=12.98 km constraining the moment of inertia I NS,38>1.61 for the conservative estimate of Crab nebula mass 2M and M Crab=2.0156M with radius, R Crab=14.07 km constraining the moment of inertia I NS,38>3.04 for the newest estimate of Crab nebula mass 4.6M which are quite well in agreement with the possible values of mass and radius of Crab pulsar. Besides this, our model yields the moments of inertia for PSR J0737-3039A and PSR J0737-3039B are I A,38=1.4624 and I B,38=1.2689 respectively. It has been observed that under well behaved conditions this class of parametric solution gives us the maximum gravitational mass of causal superdense object 2.8020M with radius 14.49 km, surface redshift z R =0.4319, charge Q=4.67×1020 C, and central density ρ c =2.68ρ nm.  相似文献

We investigate the effects of inverse Compton scattering by electrons and positrons in the unshocked winds of rotationally-powered binary pulsars. This process can scatter low energy target photons to produce gamma rays with energies from MeV to TeV. The binary radio pulsars PSR B1259−63 and PSR J0045−73 are both in close eccentric orbits around bright main sequence stars which provide a huge density of low energy target photons. The inverse Compton scattering process transfers momentum from the pulsar wind to the scattered photons, and therefore provides a drag which tends to decelerate the pulsar wind. We present detailed calculations of the dynamics of a pulsar wind which is undergoing inverse Compton scattering, showing that the deceleration of the wind of PSR B1259−63 due to ‘inverse Compton drag' is small, but that this process may confine the wind of PSR J0045−73 before it attains pressure balance with the outflow of its companion star. We calculate the spectra and light curves of the resulting inverse Compton emission from PSR B1259−63 and show that if the size of the pulsar wind nebula is comparable to the binary separation, then the γ-ray emission from the unshocked wind may be detectable by atmospheric Cherenkov detectors or by the new generation of satellite-borne γ-ray detectors such as INTEGRAL and GLAST. This mechanism may therefore provide a direct probe of the freely-expanding regions of pulsar winds, previously thought to be invisible.  相似文献

The cycle-stationary Poison model for the photon arrival of X-ray pulsars and the estimation of the pulse's time of arrival (TOA) are discussed. Based on this model, the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of the TOA, as well as the Cramer-Rao boundary (CRB), are presented, especially the approximate formulation of the likelihood function and the Cramer-Rao boundary are derived for the low-RSN (signal-to-noise ratio) cases. By using the analytical pulse profile, we have made the Monte-Carlo simulation on the TOA estimation of PSR B1821-24, discussed the estimate error for different observation times and signal-to-noise ratios, and presented the corresponding RSN-thresholds. The results show that this method of data analysis can estimate effectively the timing accuracy of X-ray pulsar pulses and help to evaluate the corresponding performances in other applications.  相似文献

We measured the frequency dependence of the pulsar pulse broadening by scattering over a wide frequency range, from 40 to 2228 MHz, based on direct measurements of this parameter using giant pulses from the pulsar PSR B0531+21 in the Crab Nebula. Our measurements were carried out at the following seven frequencies: 40, 60, and 111 MHz at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Astrospace Center, Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences), 406 MHz at the Medicina Observatory (Instituto di Radioastronomia, Italy), and 594, 1430, and 2228 MHz at the Kalyazin Radio Astronomy Observatory (Astrospace Center, Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences). The measured frequency dependence of the pulse broadening by scattering τSC (υ) ? υγ, where γ=?3.8±0.2, agrees with a model Gaussian distribution of interstellar inhomogeneities (γ=?4) but falls outside the error limits of correspondence to a Kolmogorov model spectrum of inhomogeneities (γ=?4.4).  相似文献

This paper describes the analysis, design and characterization of a polarimetric receiver developed for covering the 35 to 47 GHz frequency band in the new instrument aimed at completing the ground-based Q-U-I Joint Tenerife Experiment. This experiment is designed to measure polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background. The described high frequency instrument is a HEMT-based array composed of 29 pixels. A thorough analysis of the behaviour of the proposed receiver, based on electronic phase switching, is presented for a noise-like linearly polarized input signal, obtaining simultaneously I, Q and U Stokes parameters of the input signal. Wideband subsystems are designed, assembled and characterized for the polarimeter. Their performances are described showing appropriate results within the 35-to-47 GHz frequency band. Functionality tests are performed at room and cryogenic temperatures with adequate results for both temperature conditions, which validate the receiver concept and performance.  相似文献

We determined the features of pulsars that were disregarded in standard amplitude-calibration procedures for VLBI observations. We suggest additional amplitude-calibration methods. These methods were used to process the VLBI observations of the pulsar PSR B0329+54 carried out with the HALCA ground—space interferometer. Data from the space radio telescope are corrected for a nonuniform reception band. We estimated the diameter of the scattering disk for this pulsar at a frequency of 1600 MHz: \( < 1\mathop .\limits^{''} 8 \times 10^{ - 3}\).  相似文献

We have obtained the spectrum of a middle-aged PSR B0656+14 in the 4300–9000 Å range with the ESO/VLT/FORS2. Preliminary results show that at 4600–7000 Å the spectrum is almost featureless and flat with a spectral index α ν ??0.2 that undergoes a change to a positive value at longer wavelengths. Combining with available multiwavelength data suggests two wide, red and blue, flux depressions whose frequency ratio is about 2 and which could be the 1st and 2nd harmonics of electron/positron cyclotron absorption formed at magnetic fields ~108 G in upper magnetosphere of the pulsar.  相似文献

We investigated the kinematics of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) in the old supernova remnant CTB 80 using the Fabry-Perot interferometer of the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. In addition to the previously known expansion of the system of bright filaments with a velocity of 100–200 km s?1, we detected weak high-velocity features in the Hα line at least up to velocities of 400–450 km s?1. We analyzed the morphology of the PWN in the Hα, [S II], and [O III] lines using HST archival data and discuss its nature. The shape of the central filamentary shell, which is determined by the emission in the [O III] line and in the radio continuum, is shown to be consistent with the bow-shock model for a significant (about 60°) inclination of the pulsar’s velocity vector to the plane of the sky. In this case, the space velocity of the pulsar is twice as high as its tangential velocity, i.e., it reaches ?500 km s?1, and PSR B1951+32 is the first pulsar whose radial velocity about 40 km s?1 has been estimated from PWN observations. The shell-like Hα-structures outside the bow shock front in the east and the west could be associated with both the pulsar’s jets and the pulsar wind breakthrough due to the layered structure of the extended CTB 80 shell.  相似文献

The pulsar time defined by a single pulsar is affected by many kinds of noise sources. Its short-term and long-term degrees of stability are both not good enough. In order to weaken the influence of these noise sources on the single pulsar time, an appropriate algorithm can be adopted to make a synthesis of many single pulsar times, then the ensemble pulsar time is obtained, thereby increasing the long-term degree of stability of the ensemble pulsar time. In this article four kinds of algorithms of the ensemble pulsar time are introduced, i.e., the classical weighting algorithm, wavelet analysis algorithm, Wiener filtering algorithm and Wiener filtering algorithm in wavelet domain. These four algorithms are respectively applied to the timing residuals obtained from the observation of two millisecond pulsars, PSR B1855+09 and PSR B1937+21 made at the Arecibo Astronomical Observatory, and comparisons are carried out.  相似文献

On three nights in February 1976 we carried out polarimetric measurements, in V, of the short periodic eclipsing binary XY UMa, covering a complete cycle. The results are as follows:
  1. Within all phase intervals the linear polarization does not exceed 0.1%.
  2. In the phase range 0 p .95–1 p .35 the scatter of the Stokes parametersQ andU is about twice that within the phase interval 0 p .35–0 p .95.
  3. A periodogram analysis of these data revealed a period of 21000 s, which is equal to half the orbital periodP o=0d.47899 within 1.5%.
From these we derive the conclusions that no circumstellar envelope can be made responsible for the observed long-term changes of the light curve and system brightness, supporting the earlier spectroscopic finding. The different scatter of the Stokes parameters at different phase intervals and theP o/2 periodicity are in favor of the star spot model for XY UMa proposed by one of the authors (E. G.).  相似文献

Seven giant radio pulses were recorded from the millisecond pulsar PSR B1937+21 during ≈8.1 min observation by the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) at 326.5 MHz. Although sparse, these observations support most of the giant pulse behaviour reported at higher radio frequencies (430 to 2380 MHz). Within the main component of the integrated profile, they are emitted only in a narrow (≲47 μs) window of pulse phase, close to its peak. This has important implications for doing super-high precision timing of PSR B1937+21 at low radio frequencies.  相似文献

In an earlier paper, based on simultaneous multifrequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), we reported the variation of pulsar dispersion measures (DMs) with frequency. A few different explanations are possible for such frequency dependence, and a possible candidate is the effect of pulse shape evolution on the DM estimation technique. In this paper we describe extensive simulations we have done to investigate the effect of pulse profile evolution on pulsar DM estimates. We find that it is only for asymmetric pulse shapes that the DM estimate is significantly affected due to profile evolution with frequency. Using multifrequency data sets from our earlier observations, we have carried out systematic analyses of PSR B0329+54 and PSR B1642−03. Both these pulsars have central core-dominated emission which does not show significant asymmetric profile evolution with frequency. Even so, we find that the estimated DM shows significant variation with frequency for these pulsars. We also report results from new, simultaneous multifrequency observations of PSR B1133+16 carried out using the GMRT in phased array mode. This pulsar has an asymmetric pulse profile with significant evolution with frequency. We show that in such a case, amplitude of the observed DM variations can be attributed to profile evolution with frequency. We suggest that genuine DM variations with frequency could arise due to propagation effects through the interstellar medium and/or the pulsar magnetosphere.  相似文献

Semiempirical models of the photosphere of an Ellerman bomb in the NOAA 11024 active region were obtained using profiles of Stokes parameters I, Q, U, and V of photospheric lines. Spectropolarimetric observations were conducted using the French–Italian THEMIS telescope (Tenerife, Spain). The SIR inversion code [28] was used in the modeling. The models have two components: a magnetic flux tube and nonmagnetic surroundings. The dependences of temperature, magnetic field strength, inclination of the magnetic field vector, and line-of-sight velocity in the tube on the optical depth were obtained. The models demonstrate that the thermodynamic parameters of the Ellerman bomb photosphere differ considerably from those of the quiet photosphere. The temperature in the tube model varied nonmonotonically with height and deviated by up to 700–900 K from its values for the quiet photosphere. Downflows were observed in the lower and the upper photospheric layers. The line-of-sight velocity in the upper layers of the photosphere was as high as 17 km/s. The magnetic field strength in the models varied from 0.1–0.13 T in the lower photospheric layers to 0.04–0.07 T in the upper ones. The physical state of the photosphere did change in the course of observations.  相似文献
