Two synthetic series of spinels, MgCr2O4–Fe2+Cr2O4 and MgCr2O4–MgFe2 3+O4 have been studied by Raman spectroscopy to investigate the effects of Fe2+ and Fe3+ on their structure. In the first case, where Fe2+ substitutes Mg within the tetrahedral site, there is a continuous and monotonic shift of the Raman modes A1g and Eg toward lower wavenumbers with the increase of the chromite component into the spinel, while the F2g modes remain nearly in the same position. In the second series, for low Mg-ferrite content, Fe3+ substitutes for Cr in the octahedral site; when the Mg-ferrite content nears 40 %, a drastic change in the Raman spectra occurs as Fe3+ starts entering the tetrahedral site as well, consequently pushing Mg to occupy the octahedral one. The Raman spectral region between 620 and 700 cm?1 is associated to the octahedral site, where three peaks are present and it is possible to observe the Cr–Fe3+ substitution and the effects of order–disorder in the tetrahedral site. The spectral range at 500–620 cm?1 region shows that there is a shift of modes toward lower values with the increase of the Mg-ferrite content. The peaks in the region at 200–500 cm?1, when observed, show little or negligible Raman shift.  相似文献

Synthetic ringwoodite γ-(Mg1?x Fe x )2SiO4 of 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 1.0 compositions and variously colored micro-grains of natural ringwoodite in shock metamorphism veins of thin sections of two S6-type chondrites were studied by means of microprobe analysis, TEM and optical absorption spectroscopy. Three synthetic samples were studied in addition with Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Mössbauer spectra consist of two doublets caused by VIFe2+ and VIFe3+, with IS and QS parameters close to those established elsewhere (e.g., O’Neill et al. in Am Mineral 78:456–460, 1993). The Fe3+/Fetotal ratio evaluated by curve resolution of the spectra, ranges from 0.04 to 0.1. Optical absorption spectra of all synthetic samples studied are qualitatively very similar as they are directly related to the iron content. They differ mostly in the intensity of the observed absorption features. The spectra consist of a very strong high-energy absorption edge and a series of absorption bands of different width and intensity. The three strongest and broadest absorptions of them are attributed to splitting of electronic spin-allowed 5 T 2g → 5 E g transitions of VIFe2+ and intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transition between ferrous and ferric ions in adjacent octahedral sites of the ringwoodite structure. The spin-allowed bands at ca. 8,000 and 11,500 cm?1 weakly depend on temperature, whilst the Fe2+/Fe3+ IVCT band at ~16,400 cm?1 displays very strong temperature dependence: i.e., with increasing temperature it decreases and practically disappears at about 497 K, a behavior typical for bands of this type. With increasing pressure the absorption edge shifts to lower energies while the spin-allowed bands shift to higher energy and strongly decreases in intensity. The IVCT band also strongly weakens and vanishes at about 9 GPa. We assigned this effect to pressure-induced reduction of Fe3+ in ringwoodite. By analogy with synthetic samples three broad bands in spectra of natural (meteoritic) blue ringwoodite are assigned to electronic spin-allowed transitions of VIFe2+ (the bands at ~8,600 and ~12,700 cm?1) and Fe2+/Fe3+ IVCT transition (~18,100 cm?1), respectively. Spectra of colorless ringwoodite of the same composition consist of a single broad band at ca. 12,000 cm?1. It is assumed that such ringwoodite grains are inverse (Fe, Mg)2SiO4-spinels and that the single band is caused by the split spin-allowed 5 E → 5 T 2 transition of IVFe2+. Ringwoodite of intermediate color variations between dark-blue and colorless are assumed to be partly inversed ringwoodite. No glassy material between the grain boundaries in the natural colored ringwoodite aggregates was found in our samples and disprove the cause of the coloration to be due to light scattering effect (Lingemann and Stöffler in Lunar Planet Sci 29(1308), 1998).  相似文献

The assignment of spin-allowed Fe2+-bands in orthopyroxene electronic absorption spectra is revised by studying synthetic bronzite (Mg0.8 Fe0.2)2Si2O6, hypersthene (Mg0.5 Fe0.5)2Si2O6 and ferrosilite (Fe2Si2O6). Reheating of bronzite and hypersthene single crystals causes a redistribution of the Fe2+-ions over the M1 and M2 octahedra, which was determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy and correlated to the intensity change of the spin-allowed Fe2+ d-d bands in the polarized absorption spectra. The 11000 cm-1 band is caused by Fe2+ in M1 (5B2g5A1g) and Fe2+ in M2 (5A15A1), the 8500 cm-1 band by Fe2+ in M1 (5B2g5B1g) and the 5000 cm-1 band by Fe2+ in M2 octahedra (5A15B1). The Fe2+-Fe3+ charge transfer band is identified at 12500cm-1 in the spectra of synthetic Fe3+ -Al bearing ferrosilite. This band shows a strong γ-polarization and therefore is caused by Fe2+ -Fe3+-ions in edge-sharing octahedra.  相似文献

Spectra of seven aluminate, ferrite and chromate spinels were collected at the oxygen K-edge in order to examine the effect of octahedral ion composition on the near edge structures and explore whether these may shed some light on previously reported major variations in the optical absorption coefficient (ε) for the spin-allowed d–d band transitions due to tetrahedrally coordinated Fe2+ in optical spectra of oxide spinels. Interpretation of the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) spectra was aided using the multiple scattering code FEFF8.40. For the chromate samples spin polarised calculations were included. Gold’s iterative deconvolution method was utilized to improve on energy resolution, resulting in spectra equal in merit to those recorded by technically superior instruments. Results include absolute energy positions and interpretation of ELNES features in terms of transitions to available states. We conclude that the major causes of differences in the optical absorption coefficient mentioned above are hybridization between oxygen p- and octahedral metal orbitals. Our study does not support the idea presented by other authors that there exists a local antiferromagnetic ordering in MgCr2O4 at room temperature.  相似文献

The influence on the spinel structure of Fe3+ → Cr substitution was studied in flux-grown synthetic single crystals of the magnesiochromite–magnesioferrite (MgCr2O4–MgFe2O4) solid solution series. Samples were analysed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analyses, optical absorption and Mössbauer spectroscopy. With the exception of iron-poor samples (3–12 mol-% MgFe2O4), optical absorption and Mössbauer spectra show that iron occurs almost exclusively as trivalent Fe in the present samples. A very intense and broad absorption band at ca 7,800 cm?1 dominates the optical absorption spectra of samples with higher Fe-contents. The appearance of this band is related to a distinct structural disorder of Fe3+ and a development of magnetic ordering as demonstrated by Mössbauer spectra. Profound composition-related changes are observed in the Mössbauer spectra, which are magnetically unsplit in the range 2–41 mol-% magnesioferrite, but become magnetically split in the range 59–100 mol-% magnesioferrite. Structural parameters a 0 and M–O increase with magnesioferrite content and inversion degree, while u and T–O decrease. Our study confirms the previously reported (Lavina et al. 2002) influence of Fe3+ at the M site on T–O bond lengths in the spinel structure.  相似文献

The crystal structure and chemical composition of a crystal of (Mg14?x Cr x )(Si5?x Cr x )O24 (x ≈ 0.30) anhydrous Phase B (Anh-B) synthesized in the model system MgCr2O4–Mg2SiO4 at 12 GPa and 1600 °C have been investigated. The compound was found to be orthorhombic, space group Pmcb, with lattice parameters a = 5.900(1), b = 14.218(2), c = 10.029(2) Å, V = 841.3(2) Å3 and Z = 2. The structure was refined to R 1 = 0.065 using 1492 independent reflections. Chromium was found to substitute for both Mg at the M3 site (with a mean bond distance of 2.145 Å) and Si at the octahedral Si1 site (mean bond distance: 1.856 Å), according to the reaction Mg2+ + Si4+ = 2Cr3+. Such substitutions cause a reduction in the volume of the M3 site and an increase in the volume of the Si-dominant octahedron with respect to the values typically observed for pure Anh-B and Fe2+-bearing Anh-B. Taking into account that Cr3+ is not expected to be Jahn–Teller active, it appears that both the Cr3+–for–Mg and Cr3+–for–Si substitutions in the Anh-B structure decrease the distortion of the octahedra. Electron microprobe analysis gave the Mg13.66(8)Si4.70(6)Cr0.62(4)O24 stoichiometry for the studied phase. The successful synthesis of this phase provides new information for the possible mineral assemblages occurring in the Earth’s deep upper mantle and shed new light on the so-called X discontinuity that has been observed at 275–345 km depth in several subcontinental and subduction zone environments.  相似文献

Unusual Ti–Cr–Zr-rich garnet crystals from high-temperature melilitic skarn of the Maronia area, western Thrace, Greece, were investigated by electron-microprobe analysis, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Chemical data showed that the garnets contain up to 8 wt.% TiO2, 8 wt.% Cr2O3 and 4 wt.% ZrO2, representing a solid solution of andradite (Ca3Fe3+ 2Si3O12 ≈46 mol%), uvarovite (Ca3Cr2Si3O12 ≈23 mol%), grossular (Ca3Al2Si3O12 ≈10 mol%), schorlomite (Ca3Ti2[Si,(Fe3+,Al3+)2]O12 ≈15 mol%), and kimzeyite (Ca3Zr2[Si,Al2]3O12 ≈6 mol%). The Mössbauer analysis showed that the total Fe is ferric, preferentially located at the octahedral site and to a smaller extent at the tetrahedral site. Single-crystal XRD analysis, Raman and IR spectroscopy verified substitution of Si mainly by Al3+, Fe3+ and Ti4+. Cr3+ and Zr4+ are found at the octahedral site along with Fe3+, Al3+ and Ti4+. The measured H2O content is 0.20 wt.%. The analytical data suggest that the structural formula of the Maronia garnet can be given as: (Ca2.99Mg0.03)Σ=3.02(Fe3+ 0.67Cr0.54Al0.33Ti0.29Zr0.15)Σ=1.98(Si2.42Ti0.24Fe0.18Al0.14)Σ=2.98O12OH0.11. Ti-rich garnets are not common and their crystal chemistry is still under investigation. The present work presents new evidence that will enable the elucidation of the structural chemistry of Ti- and Cr-rich garnets.  相似文献

We define and calibrate a new model of molar volume as a function of pressure, temperature, ordering state, and composition for spinels in the supersystem (Mg, Fe2+)(Al, Cr, Fe3+)2O4 ? (Mg, Fe2+)2TiO4. We use 832 X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements performed on spinels at ambient and in situ high-P, T conditions to calibrate end-member equations of state and an excess volume model for this system. The effect on molar volume of cation ordering over the octahedral and tetrahedral sites is captured with linear dependence on Mg2+, Al3+, and Fe3+ site occupancy terms. We allow standard-state volumes and coefficients of thermal expansion of the end members to vary within their uncertainties during extraction of the mixing properties, in order to achieve the best fit. Published equations of state of the various spinel end members are analyzed to obtain optimal values of the bulk modulus and its pressure derivative, for each explicit end member. For any spinel composition in the supersystem, the model molar volume is obtained by adding excess volume and cation order-dependent terms to a linear combination of the five end-member volumes, estimated at pressure and temperature using the high-T Vinet equation of state. The preferred model has a total of 9 excess volume and order-dependent parameters and fits nearly all experiments to within 0.02 J/bar/mol, or better than 0.5 % in volume. The model is compared to the current MELTS spinel model with a demonstration of the impact of the model difference on the estimated spinel-garnet lherzolite transition pressure.  相似文献

The crystal structure and chemical composition of crystals of (Mg1?x Cr x )(Si1?x Cr x )O3 ilmenite (with x = 0.015, 0.023 and 0.038) synthesized in the model system Mg3Cr2Si3O12–Mg4Si4O12 at 18–19 GPa and 1,600 °C have been investigated. Chromium was found as substitute for both Mg at the octahedral X site and Si at the octahedral Y site, according to the reaction Mg2+ + Si4+ = 2Cr3+. Such substitutions cause a shortening of the <X–O> and a lengthening of the <Y–O> distances with respect to the values typically observed for pure MgSiO3 ilmenite and eskolaite Cr2O3. Although no high Cr contents are considered in the pyrolite model, Cr-bearing ilmenite may be the host for chromium in the Earth’s transition zone. The successful synthesis of ilmenite with high Cr contents and its structural characterization are of key importance because the study of its thermodynamic constants combined with the data on phase relations in the lower-mantle systems can help in the understanding of the seismic velocity and density profiles of the transition zone and the constraining composition and mineralogy of pyrolite in this area of the Earth.  相似文献

Thirteen Cr-bearing spinels from major horizons of magma replenishment in the open-system Rum Layered Suite have been analysed by X-ray single crystal diffraction and electron microprobe analyses. On the basis of the structural parameters and the chemistry of these spinels the so-called Rum trend, in which Al-content increases at the expense of Cr and Fe3+, has been easily recognised. In addition, natural spinels with Fe3+ content similar to synthetic spinels on the MgCr2O4?CMgFe2O4 join have been analysed for the first time. Layers of chromitite, anorthosite and peridotite situated within several cm of one another have yielded different intracrystalline exchange temperatures using an intercrystalline spinel-olivine thermometer. The Rum anorthosite Cr-spinels are interpreted as having crystallised within the cumulus pile following rejuvenation of the crystal mush. Their low Al-content is a function of simultaneous plagioclase crystallisation, reducing the amount of Al3+ present for the Cr-spinel. By contrast, Cr-spinels in well-known Archean anorthosites (e.g. Ujaragssuit nunat and Fisken?sset, western Greenland) and Sittampundi (southern India) are very aluminous in composition, attributed to crystallisation of Cr-spinel from high-alumina basalts in lower crustal magma chambers and linked to the control exerted by plagioclase crystallisation on Al content of the melt, in the absence of clinopyroxene crystallisation. The compositional differences between the Rum anorthosite Cr-spinels and the Fisken?sset and Sittampundi Cr-spinels suggest that postcumulus reaction of Cr-spinel and melt to low (800?C900°C) temperatures, as invoked for the Rum crystals, may not have been as important a process in the Archean anorthosites.  相似文献

Data on the structural and valence distribution of Cr and Fe in chrysoberyl and in alexandrite, its gem variety, are given. It is shown that the Cr3+ line in the natural Ural and Tanzania samples is the strongest in the M1 site and for the synthetic stones, in the M2 site. During the annealing of the alexandrite crystals, Cr3+ passes from the smaller M1 site into the larger M2 site. The M?ssbauer spectroscopy quantitatively determined the distribution of different valence Fe ions. The various proportions of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions isomorphically entering the octahedral sites in the BeAl2O4 crystal structure were established.  相似文献

The influence on the structure of Fe2+ Mg substitution was studied in synthetic single crystals belonging to the MgCr2O4–FeCr2O4 series produced by flux growth at 900–1200 °C in controlled atmosphere. Samples were analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analyses, optical absorption-, infrared- and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Mössbauer data show that iron occurs almost exclusively as IVFe2+. Only minor Fe3+ (<0.005 apfu) was observed in samples with very low total Fe. Optical absorption spectra show that chromium with few exceptions is present as a trivalent cation at the octahedral site. Additional absorption bands attributable to Cr2+ and Cr3+ at the tetrahedral site are evident in spectra of end-member magnesiochromite and solid-solution crystals with low ferrous contents. Structural parameters a0, u and T–O increase with chromite content, while the M–O bond distance remains nearly constant, with an average value equal to 1.995(1) Å corresponding to the Cr3+ octahedral bond distance. The ideal trend between cell parameter, T–O bond length and Fe2+ content (apfu) is described by the following linear relations: a0=8.3325(5) + 0.0443(8)Fe2+ (Å) and T–O=1.9645(6) + 0.033(1)Fe2+ (Å) Consequently, Fe2+ and Mg tetrahedral bond lengths are equal to 1.998(1) Å and 1.965(1) Å, respectively.  相似文献

The crystal structure and cation distributions in the spinels MgCr2O4, ZnCr2O4, Fe3O4 and a suite of ZnAl2O4 samples annealed at 900 to 1400° C and then rapidly quenched, have been determined by powder X-ray diffraction, using several different X-ray procedures and both conventional structure-factor refinement and whole-pattern (or Rietveld) refinement methods. The chromite spinels are expected from crystal chemical considerations to have an almost completely normal cation distribution (inversion parameter, x, equal to zero). In agreement with this expectation, three samples of MgCr2O4 annealed at 900, 1100 and 1300° C, and ZnCr2O4 were all found to have x=0 within two estimated standard deviations (esd), suggesting that the accuracy with which cation distributions in spinels may be determined by powder XRD is close to the estimated precision. Slightly better results are obtained assuming neutral-atom scattering curves rather than half-ionized or fully ionized, but the differences are small (within the esd). The results from the Rietveld refinements are similarly in good agreement with those using the conventional structure factor refinement approach (agreement within the combined esd's), although in detail the Rietveld procedure sometimes produces small systematic differences in refined parameters. The suite of ZnAl2O4 spinels show a smooth increase in x from 0.01 at 900° C to 0.05 at 1300° C, and this behaviour is well described by the simple thermodynamic model for disordering in spinels with αZn-Al=89 kJ/mol, assuming β=?20 kJ/mol. The oxygen positional parameters for Fe3O4 are similar to those from published single crystal studies, indicating that the powder method also yields accurate interatomic distances in spinels.  相似文献

The high-pressure equation of state of the normal spinels MgCr2O4 (picrochromite), MnCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4, and their reaction of decomposition into Cr2O3 (eskolaite) and MO (rocksalt-type) component oxides, were investigated by periodic unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations. All-electron basis sets, and an a posteriori correction for the electron correlation energy, based on Density-Functional-Theory, were employed. Interpolation of results by the P-V Murnaghan equation of state yielded the equilibrium volume and energy, and the bulk modulus and its pressure derivative, for each of the seven phases (three spinels, three rocksalt oxides and eskolaite) considered. The simulated behaviour of interatomic distances vs pressure shows similar compressibilities of M-O bonds in both octahedral and tetrahedral coordinations. Binding energies and formation enthalpies of spinels from oxides are also computed and compared to available experimental data. The predicted decomposition pressures of Mg, Mn and Zn chromium spinels are 19, 23 and 34 GPa, respectively. The greater stability of ZnCr2O4 is related to Zn2+ being better suited to tetrahedral coordination than the other M2+ cations. Such results are strongly supported by the excellent agreement previously obtained between simulated (11 GPa) and experimental (13 GPa) pressures of the decomposition of MgAl2O4 spinel into corundum and periclase. Violet, non-pleochroic and greenish-blue, pleochroic chromium-substituted sapphirines were found in corundum-bearing spinel-websterite xenolites from the Yakutian kimberlite pipes Noyabrskaya (N) and Sludyanka (Sl), respectively. The crystallochemical formulae of sapphirine crystals from such xenolites were determined by EMP to be (Mg3.40Fe0.23Al3.25Cr0.16)[6] Al 1.00 [6] [O2/Al4.53Si1.47O18] (N) and (Mg2.53Fe0.55 Mn0.04Ti 0.03 4+ Al3.55Cr 0.08 3+ )[6]Al 1.00 [16] [O2/Al4.28Si1.73O18] (Sl). Single crystal spectra in the range 35000–6000 cm1- showed a slightly polarization dependent absorption edge near 3200 cm1- (N) or 30000 cm1- (Sl) and unpolarized bands at 25300 and 17300 cm1-, typical of spin-allowed transitions, derived from 4A2g4T1g and 4A2g4T2g, of Cr3+ in octahedral sites, with point symmetry C1, of the structure. Another weak band at 23000 cm?1 in the sapphirine-N spectra is attributed to low symmetry splitting of the excited 4T1 (F)-State of Cr3+. These assignments lead to crystal field parameters Dq=1730cm?1 and B= 685cm?1 of Cr3+ in sapphirine. Crystallochemical and spectroscopic arguments suggest that Cr3+ subsitutes for Al in the M(1) or M(8) sites of the sapphirine structure. In addition to Cr3+-transitions, spectra of Sl exhibit weak dd-bands of Fe2+ at 10000 and 7700 cm1-, which are unpolarized in consistency with the C1 site symmetry of the octahedra in the structure. Spectra of Sl show also prominent, broad bands (Δv1/2~-5000 cm1-) at 15000 and 11000 cm1-, which occur in E//Y(//b) and E//Z(//c=12°) only and exhibit an intensity ratio αY∶αz close to 1∶3. This result, the large half width, as well as band energy — MM distance considerations suggest that these bands originate from Fe2+[6]-Fe3+[6] charge-transfer transitions in wall octahedra M(1)M(2), M(6)M(7) etc., forming MM vectors of 30° with the c-axis. The lack of Fe2+-Fe3+ charge-transfer bands in sapphirine N might indicate a lower oxygen fugacity during the formation of the websterite from the Noyabrskaya pipe compared to that from the Sludyanka pipe.  相似文献

Unpolarized absorption spectra of single crystals of Cr3+ doped Al2O3 (synthetic ruby) have measured using a new, time-resolving, dispersive, streak photographic system over the range ~350 to ~700 nm during a series of shock loading experiments. The crystal field absorptions assigned to the transition 4 A 2g4 T 2g were observed to shift in a series of experiments from 555±1 nm at atmospheric pressure to 503±5 nm at 46 GPa. In a single experiment at 32 GPa the 4 A 2g4 T 1g transition was observed to shift from 405±1 to 386±5 nm. The present data extrapolate downwards in compression toward the 10 GPa data of Stephens and Drickamer (1961) although both crystal field absorption energies increase considerably less with compression than predicted by the simple ionic point charge model. The single datum observed for the Racah parameter B, 588±38 cm?1 at 32 GPa, is consistant with previous results to 10 GPa and the trend of decreasing B, with compression expected from the divergence of the data from the point charge model due to increasing covalancy.  相似文献

Lithian ferrian enstatite with Li2O = 1.39 wt% and Fe2O3 7.54 wt% was synthesised in the (MgO–Li2O–FeO–SiO2–H2O) system at P = 0.3 GPa, T = 1,000°C, fO2 = +2 Pbca, and a = 18.2113(7), b = 8.8172(3), c = 5.2050(2) Å, V = 835.79(9) Å3. The composition of the orthopyroxene was determined combining EMP, LA-ICP-MS and single-crystal XRD analysis, yielding the unit formula M2(Mg0.59Fe 0.21 2+ Li0.20) M1(Mg0.74Fe 0.20 3+ Fe 0.06 2+ ) Si2O6. Structure refinements done on crystals obtained from synthesis runs with variable Mg-content show that the orthopyroxene is virtually constant in composition and hence in structure, whereas coexisting clinopyroxenes occurring both as individual grains or thin rims around the orthopyroxene crystals have variable amounts of Li, Fe3+ and Mg contents. Structure refinement shows that Li is ordered at the M2 site and Fe3+ is ordered at the M1 site of the orthopyroxene, whereas Mg (and Fe2+) distributes over both octahedral sites. The main geometrical variations observed for Li-rich samples are actually due to the presence of Fe3+, which affects significantly the geometry of the M1 site; changes in the geometry of the M2 site due to the lower coordination of Li are likely to affect both the degree and the kinetics of the non-convergent Fe2+-Mg ordering process in octahedral sites.  相似文献

Low-temperature heat capacity measurements for MgCr2O4 have only been performed down to 52 K, and the commonly quoted third-law entropy at 298 K (106 J K−1 mol−1) was obtained by empirical extrapolation of these measurements to 0 K without considering the magnetic or electronic ordering contributions to the entropy. Subsequent magnetic measurements at low temperature reveal that the Néel temperature, at which magnetic ordering of the Cr3+ ions in MgCr2O4 occurs, is at ∼15 K. Hence a substantial contribution to the entropy of MgCr2O4 has been missed. We have determined the position of the near-univariant reaction MgCr2O4+SiO2=MgSiO3+Cr2O3. The reaction, which has a small positive slope in P-T space, has been bracketed at 100 K intervals between 1273 and 1773 K by reversal experiments. The reaction is extremely sluggish, and lengthy run times with a flux (H2O, BaO-B2O3 or K2O-B2O3) are needed to produce tight reversal brackets. The results, combined with assessed thermodynamic data for Cr2O3, MgSiO3 and SiO2, give the entropy and enthalpy of formation of MgCr2O4 spinel. As expected, our experimental results are not in good agreement with the presently available thermodynamic data. We obtain Δ f H 298=−1759.2±1.5 kJ mol−1 and S 298=122.1±1.0 J K−1 mol−1 for MgCr2O4. This entropy is some 16 J K−1 mol−1 more than the calorimetrically determined value, and implies a value for the magnetic entropy of MgCr2O4 consistent with an effective spin quantum number (S') for Cr3+ of 1/2 rather than the theoretical 3/2, indicating, as in other spinels, spin quenching. Ti-andradites were synthesized at a pressure of P(H2O)=3 kbar and temperatures of 700–800° C. Oxygen fugacities were controlled by solid state buffers (Ni/NiO; SiO2 + Fe/Fe2SiO4). The Fe2+-and Fe3+-distribution was determined by low temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy. The water content was measured by a solid's moisture analyzer. The chemical composition of the synthetic and the natural sample has been determined by electron microprobe. Ti-andradites from runs at high oxygen fugacities have Fe3+ on octahedral and tetrahedral sites; Ti-andradites from runs at low oxygen fugacities have tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated Fe2+ as well. These “reduced” garnets must also contain Ti3+ on octahedral sites. Charge balance is maintained due to substitution of O2? by (OH)? by two mechanisms: (SiO4)4? ? (O4H4)4? and (Fe3+O6)9? ? (Fe2+O5OH)9?. FTIR spectra of the synthetic samples do show the presence of structurally bound (OH)?. In a natural sample tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated Fe3+ are observed together with Fe2+ on all three cation sites of the garnet structure.  相似文献

A model is developed for the thermodynamic properties of Fe2+–Mg2+-aluminate-titanate-ferrite spinels of space group Fd3m. The model incorporates an expression for the configurational entropy of mixing which accounts for long-range order over tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Short-range order or departures from cubic symmetry are not considered. The non-configurational Gibbs energy is formulated as a second degree Taylor expansion in six linearly independent composition and ordering variables. The model parameters are calibrated to reproduce miscibility gap constraints, order-disorder phenomena in MgAl2O4 and MgFe2O4, and Fe2+–Mg2+ partitioning data between olivine and: (1) aluminate spinels; (2) ferrite spinels; (3) titanate spinels; (4) mixed aluminate-ferrite spinels. This calibration is achieved without invoking non-configurational excess entropies of mixing. The model predicts that the ordering state of FeAl2O4 is more normal than that of MgAl2O4. It also successfully accounts for heat of solution measurements and activity-composition relations in the constituent binaries. Phase equilibrium constraints require that the structure of Fe3O4 is more inverse than random at all temperatures and that Mg2+ has a strong tetrahedral site preference with respect to that of Fe2+. The analysis suggests that in the titanates short range order on octahedral sites may be significant at temperatures as high as 1300° C. Constraints developed from calibrating the thermodynamic properties of Fe2+–Mg2+-aluminatetitanate-ferrite spinel solid solutions permit extension of the database of Berman (1988) to include estimates of the end-member properties of hercynite (FeAl2O4), ulvöspinel (Fe2TiO4), MgFe2O4 and cubic Mg2TiO4. In constructing these estimates, provision is made for low-temperature magnetic entropy contributions and the energetic consequences of disordering the aluminates and the ferrites. These estimates are consistent with all of the available low-temperature adiabatic calorimetry, high-temperature heat content, and heat of solution measurements on the end-members. The analysis implies that there is a substantial heat capacity anomaly in the range 300°–900° C associated with disordering of the MgAl2O4 structure while that in FeAl2O4 becomes significant at temperatures above 700° C. The same heat capacity response in the ferrites indicates that the order/disorder transformation is coupled to the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition in MgFe2O4 but takes place well above the ferrimagnetic-paramagnetic transition in magnetite. The proposed model is internally consistent with solution theory reported elsewhere for Fe2+–Mg2+ olivines and orthopyroxenes (Sack and Ghiorso 1989), rhombohedral oxides (Ghiorso 1990a) and the remaining end-member properties of Berman (1988).  相似文献
