Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have performed stellar photometry of several fields in the isolated spiral galaxies NGC 6503 and NGC 6946 with high peculiar velocities. Based on the TRGB method, we have determined the distances to the galaxies: D = 6.30 ± 0.10 Mpc for NGC 6503 and D = 6.72 ± 0.15 Mpc for NGC 6946. The current stellar content of the galaxies does not differ from that of other similar galaxies. The metallicity for young stars in NGC 6503 is Z = 0.02 (corresponding to the solar metallicity), while the metallicity for stars in NGC 6946 reaches Z = 0.05. Very few old globular clusters have been found in NGC 6946, while they have not been found at all in NGC 6503. The number density distribution of stars with different ages in NGC 6503 does not differ from the analogous distributions in other galaxies. The large sizes of the thick disk in NGC 6503, which is clearly seen up to 6 kpc from the galactic disk plane and whose possible extension is noticeable up to 8.6 kpc from the plane, are a difference. The sizes of the region occupied by red giants of the disk in NGC 6503 are 51 × 17 kpc, which are not much larger than the sizes of this galaxy from H I radio observations.  相似文献

We have performed photometric B, V, and R observations of nine disk galaxies that presumably have abnormally low total mass-to-light (M/L) ratios for given color indices. Our data on surface photometry are used to analyze the possible causes of anomalous M/L estimates. In many cases, these can be the result of errors in photometry or rotational velocity determination but can also reflect the real peculiarities of the stellar composition of galaxies. Comparison of the photometric and dynamical disk mass estimates obtained by analyzing the rotational velocities shows that low M/L values for a given color index are probably real for some of the galaxies. This is primarily true of NGC 4826 (Sab), NGC 5347 (Sab), and NGC 6814 (Sb). The small number of such galaxies suggests that the stellar initial mass function is universal. However, a small fraction of galaxies probably may have a non-typical mass function “depleted” in low-mass stars. Such galaxies require a more careful study.  相似文献

We present the results of observations of a sample of isolated lenticular galaxies, performed at the SCORPIO and SCORPIO-2 spectrographs of the 6-meter BTA telescope of the SAO RAS in the long-slit mode. By direct spectra approximation, using the evolutionary synthesis models, we have measured the radial profiles of the rotation velocity as well as the dispersions of velocities, average age, and average metallicity of stars in 12 objects. The resulting average ages of the stellar population in bulges and discs fill an entire range of possible values from 1.5 to 15 Gyr which indicates the absence in the isolated lenticular galaxies, unlike in the members of groups and clusters, of a certain epoch when the structural components are formed: they could have been formed at a redshift of z > 2 as well as only several billion years ago. Unlike the S0 galaxies in a more dense environment, isolated galaxies typically have the same age of stars in the bulges and discs. The lenses and rings of increased stellar brightness, identified from the photometry of 7 of 11 galaxies, do not significantly differ from the stellar discs by the properties of stellar populations and velocity dispersion of stars. We draw a conclusion that the final arrangement of the morphological type of a lenticular galaxy in complete isolation is critically dependent on the possible modes of accretion of the cold external gas.  相似文献

Dynamical modeling of stellar disks without bulges is used to derive the dependence of the central stellar radial-velocity dispersion on the dark-halo mass. A sample of late-type galaxies with known central stellar velocity dispersions and maximum gas rotation velocities was drawn from the LEDA database. The sample-averaged ratio of the halo mass within four radial disk scale lengths to the disk mass is 80%. Objects whose halo mass can be a factor of 2 or more larger than the disk mass were identified.  相似文献

Stellar photometry of images from the ACS and WFPC2 cameras on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is used to study the star composition and spatial distribution of stars in three edge-on visible spiral galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4144, and NGC 4244. Measurements of the surface number density of old stars revealed two stellar subsystems in these galaxies: a thick disk and a halo. The boundaries of these subsystems, which consist mainly of red giants, are determined from the change in the gradient of the number density of the stars. The halos are flattened at the poles of the galaxies and extend to distances of 8–25 kpc from the planes of the galaxies. The present results on the number density distribution of stars with different ages perpendicular to the planes of these galaxies make it possible to improve our model for the stellar structure of spiral galaxies. The distances to these galaxies are calculated using a determination of the tip of the red giant branches (the TRGB method): D = 9.82 Mpc (NGC 891), D = 7.24 Mpc (NGC 4144), and D = 4.29 Mpc (NGC 4244).__________Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 2, pp. 261–280 (May 2005).  相似文献

We present an analysis of new observations of a peculiar galaxy PGC60020, obtained with the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS with a multimode SCORPIO instrument. The observational data includes direct images in the B, V, R c photometric bands and long-slit spectra in the red range (the H?? line spectral region). Based on the analysis of these data it was found that PGC60020 belongs to the type of classical polar-ring galaxies. Its main body is an S0 galaxy, around the major axis of which a disk of gas, dust and stars is rotating in the plane inclined at an angle of about 60° to the galactic plane. A loop-shaped structure stretches from the southern part of this disk (possibly, a tidal tail) towards the SDSS J 171745.58+404137.1 galaxy.  相似文献

We analyze the relationship between the mass of a spherical component and the minimum possible thickness of stable stellar disks. This relationship for real galaxies allows the lower limit on the dark halo mass to be estimated (the thinner the stable stellar disk is, the more massive the dark halo must be). In our analysis, we use both theoretical relations and numerical N-body simulations of the dynamical evolution of thin disks in the presence of spherical components with different density profiles and different masses. We conclude that the theoretical relationship between the thickness of disk galaxies and the mass of their spherical components is a lower envelope for the model data points. We recommend using this theoretical relationship to estimate the lower limit for the dark halo mass in galaxies. The estimate obtained turns out to be weak. Even for the thinnest galaxies, the dark halo mass within four exponential disk scale lengths must be more than one stellar disk mass.  相似文献

We present our observations of the pair of interacting galaxies NGC 6285/86 carried out with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) telescope using 1D and 2D spectroscopy. The observations of NGC 6286 with a long-slit spectrograph (UAGS) near the Hα line revealed the rotation of the gaseous disk around an axis offset by 5″–7″ from the photometric center and a luminous gas at a distance up to 9 kpc in a direction perpendicular to the galactic plane. Using a multipupil fiber spectrograph (MPFS), we constructed the velocity fields of the stellar and gaseous components in the central region of this galaxy, which proved to be similar. The close radial velocities of the pair and the wide (5′×5′) field of view of the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (IFP) allowed us to simultaneously obtain images in the Hα and [N II]λ6583 lines and in the continuum, as well as to construct the radial velocity fields and to map the distribution of the [N II]λ6583/Hα ratio for both galaxies. Based on all these data, we studied the gas kinematics in the galaxies, constructed their rotation curves, and estimated their masses (2 × 1011M for NGC 6286 and 1.2 × 1010M for NGC 6285). We found no evidence of gas rotation around the major axis of NGC 6286, which argues against the assumption that this galaxy has a forming polar ring. The IFP observations revealed an emission nebula around this galaxy with a structure characteristic of superwind galaxies. The large [N II]λ6583/Hα ratio, which suggests the collisional excitation of its emission, and the high infrared luminosity are additional arguments for the hypothesis of a superwind in the galaxy NGC 6286. A close encounter between the two galaxies was probably responsible for the starburst and the bipolar outflow of hot gas from the central region of the disk.  相似文献

We analyze new observational data obtained at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the multimode SCORPIO instrument and the Multi-Pupil Fiber Spectrograph for the group of galaxies NGC 7465/64/63. For one of the group members (NGC 7465), the presence of a polar ring has been suspected. We have constructed the large-scale brightness distributions, the ionized-gas velocity and velocity dispersion fields for all three galaxies as well as the line-of-sight velocity curves based on emission and absorption lines and the stellar velocity field in the central region for NGC 7465. As a result of our analysis of the data obtained, we have discovered an inner stellar disk (r ?? 0.5 kpc) and a warped gaseous disk in NGC 7465, in addition to the main stellar disk. Based on a joint study of our photometric and spectroscopic data, we have established that NGC 7464 is an irregular IrrI-type galaxy whose structural and kinematic peculiarities most likely resulted from its gravitational interaction with NGC 7465. The velocity field of the ionized gas in NGC 7463 turns out to be typical of barred spiral galaxies, and the warp of the outer parts of its disk could arise from a close encounter with one of the galaxies of the environment.  相似文献

The radial dependences of the star formation efficiency??SFE = ??SFR/??gas (per unit disk surface area) in normal surface brightness spiral galaxies and low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are compared with the radial variations of the gas and stellar disk surface and volume densities. The volume density of the components in the disk midplane is found through a self-consistent solution of the disk equilibrium equations by taking into account the dark halo. The disk thickness variation with radius R is calculated within the model of a galaxy with a marginally stable disk by taking into account the increase of the stability parameter Q T,c along the radius. We show that the star formation efficiency depends weakly (for LSB galaxies, does not depend at all) on the gas density but correlates well with the disk surface and volume density, with the normal and LSB galaxies forming a single sequence. The dependence vanishes only at extremely low disk densities (?? disk ? (1?3) M ?? pc?2, ?? stars ?? (1?3) × 10?24 g cm?3), where star formation probably ceases to be related to disk properties. Estimations of the gas volume density allow us to check the expected form of the ??SFR-?? disk relationship that follows from the model by Ostriker et al., which relates the star formation rate to the pressure of the diffuse gas medium. For most of the galaxies considered, there is satisfactory agreement with the model, except for the densest (of the order of several hundred M ?? pc?2) and least dense (several M?? pc?2 or less) disk regions.  相似文献

We have discovered a new type of galaxy in the Fornax Cluster: `ultra-compact' dwarfs (UCDs). The UCDs are unresolved in ground-based imaging and have spectra typical of old stellar systems. Although the UCDs resemble overgrown globular clusters, based on VLT UVES echelle spectroscopy, they appear to be dynamically distinct systems with higher internal velocity dispersions and M/L ratios for a given luminosity than Milky Way or M31 globulars. Our preferred explanation for their origin is that they are the remnant nuclei of dwarf elliptical galaxies which have been tidally stripped, or `threshed' by repeated encounters with the central cluster galaxy, NGC1399. If correct, then tidal stripping of nucleated dwarfs to form UCDs may, over a Hubble time, be an important source of the plentiful globular cluster population in the halo of NGC1399, and, by implication, other cD galaxies. In this picture, the dwarf elliptical halo contents, up to 99% of the original dwarf luminosity, contribute a significant fraction of the populations of intergalactic stars, globulars, and gas in galaxy clusters. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present new Planetary Nebula Spectrograph observations of the ordinary elliptical galaxy NGC 4494, resulting in positions and velocities of 255 planetary nebulae out to seven effective radii (25 kpc). We also present new wide-field surface photometry from MMT/Megacam, and long-slit stellar kinematics from VLT/FORS2. The spatial and kinematical distributions of the planetary nebulae agree with the field stars in the region of overlap. The mean rotation is relatively low, with a possible kinematic axis twist outside  1 R e  . The velocity dispersion profile declines with radius, though not very steeply, down to  ∼70 km s−1  at the last data point.
We have constructed spherical dynamical models of the system, including Jeans analyses with multi-component Λ cold dark matter (CDM) motivated galaxies as well as logarithmic potentials. These models include special attention to orbital anisotropy, which we constrain using fourth-order velocity moments. Given several different sets of modelling methods and assumptions, we find consistent results for the mass profile within the radial range constrained by the data. Some dark matter (DM) is required by the data; our best-fitting solution has a radially anisotropic stellar halo, a plausible stellar mass-to-light ratio and a DM halo with an unexpectedly low central density. We find that this result does not substantially change with a flattened axisymmetric model.
Taken together with other results for galaxy halo masses, we find suggestions for a puzzling pattern wherein most intermediate-luminosity galaxies have very low concentration haloes, while some high-mass ellipticals have very high concentrations. We discuss some possible implications of these results for DM and galaxy formation.  相似文献

The Galactic orbits of 27 440 stars of all classes with accurate coordinates and parallaxes of more than 3 mas from the Hipparcos catalogue, proper motions from the Tycho-2 catalogue, and radial velocities from the Pulkovo Compilation of Radial Velocities (PCRV) are analyzed. The sample obtained is much more representative than the Geneva-Copenhagen survey and other studies of Galactic orbits in the solar neighborhood. An estimation of the influence of systematic errors in the velocities on orbital parameters shows that the errors of the proper motions due to the duplicity of stars are tangible only in the statistics of orbital parameters for very small samples, while the errors of the radial velocities are noticeable in the statistics of orbital parameters for halo stars. Therefore, previous studies of halo orbits may be erroneous. The distribution of stars in selection-free regions of the multidimensional space of orbital parameters, dereddened colors, and absolute magnitudes is considered. Owing to the large number of stars and the high accuracy of PCRV radial velocities, nonuniformities of this distribution (apart from the well-known dynamical streams) have been found. Stars with their peri- and apogalacticons in the disk, perigalacticons in the bulge and apogalacticons in the disk, perigalacticons in the bulge and apogalacticons in the halo, and perigalacticons in the disk and apogalacticons in the halo have been identified. Thus, the bulge and the halo are inhomogeneous structures, each consisting of at least two populations. The radius of the bulge has been determined: 2 kpc.  相似文献

We describe the results of our spectroscopy for a sample of barred galaxies whose inner regions exhibit an isophotal twist commonly interpreted as a secondary bar. The line-of-sight velocity fields of the ionized gas and stars and the light-of-sight velocity dispersion fields of the stars were constructed from two-dimensional spectroscopy with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. We detected various types of noncircular motions of ionized gas: radial flows within large-scale bars, counterrotation of the gas and stars at the center of NGC 3945, a polar gaseous disk in NGC 5850, etc. Our analysis of the optical and near-infrared galaxy images (both ground-based and those from the Hubble Space Telescope) revealed circumnuclear minispirals in five objects. The presence of an inner (secondary) bar in the galaxy images is shown to have no effect on the circumnuclear kinematics of the gas and stars. Thus, contrary to popular belief, the secondary bar is not a dynamically decoupled galactic structure. We conclude that the so-called double-barred galaxies are not a separate type of galaxy but are a combination of objects with distinctly different morphologies of their circumnuclear regions.  相似文献

We discuss the problem of using stellar kinematics of early-type galaxies to constrain the orbital anisotropies and radial mass profiles of galaxies. We demonstrate that compressing the light distribution of a galaxy along the line of sight produces approximately the same signature in the line-of-sight velocity profiles as radial anisotropy. In particular, fitting spherically symmetric dynamical models to apparently round, isotropic face-on flattened galaxies leads to a spurious bias towards radial orbits in the models, especially if the galaxy has a weak face-on stellar disc. Such face-on stellar discs could plausibly be the cause of the radial anisotropy found in spherical models of intermediate luminosity ellipticals such as NGC 2434, 3379 and 6703.
In the light of this result, we use simple dynamical models to constrain the outer mass profiles of a sample of 18 round, early-type galaxies. The galaxies follow a Tully–Fisher relation parallel to that for spiral galaxies, but fainter by at least 0.8 mag ( I -band) for a given mass. The most luminous galaxies show clear evidence for the presence of a massive dark halo, but the case for dark haloes in fainter galaxies is more ambiguous. We discuss the observations that would be required to resolve this ambiguity.  相似文献

A deep H I survey with the VLA of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403 has revealed the existence of a thick, low density layer of neutral gas surrounding the thin ‘cold’ disk. This layer has a mean rotation velocity 25–50 km s-1 lower than that of the disk and a 10–20 km s-1inflow towards the centre of the galaxy. In the central parts there are velocity differences from rotation of up to 150 km s-1.Chandra observations of NGC 2403 show a diffuse, hot X-ray emitting gas component with a temperature of a few 106 K. These results point at galactic fountain type of flows between disk and halo. ‘Halo’ gas with similar characteristics has also been observed in other spiral galaxies(e.g. NGC 6946, NGC 891). Such gas is probably similar to the IVCs and to some of the HVCs of the Milky Way.  相似文献

Based on our compiled catalogue of fundamental astrophysical parameters for 593 open clusters, we analyze the relations between the chemical composition, spatial positions, Galactic orbital elements, age, and other physical parameters of open star clusters. We show that the population of open clusters is heterogeneous and is divided into two groups differing by their mean parameters, properties, and origin. One group includes the Galactic clusters formed mainly from the interstellar matter of the thin disk with nearly solarmetallicities ([Fe/H] > ?0.2) and having almost circular orbits a short distance away from the Galactic plane, i.e., typical of the field stars of the Galactic thin disk. The second group includes the peculiar clusters formed through the interaction of extragalactic objects (such as high-velocity clouds, globular clusters, or dwarf galaxies) with the interstellar matter of the thin disk, which, as a result, derived abnormally low (for field thin-disk stars) metallicities and/or Galactic orbits typical of objects of the older Galactic subsystems. About 70% of the clusters older than 1Gyr have been found to be peculiar, suggesting a slower disruption of clusters with noncircular high orbits. Analysis of orbital elements has shown that the bulk of the clusters from both groups were formed within a Galactocentric radius of ??10.5 kpc and closer than ??180 pc from the Galactic plane, but owing to their high initial velocities, the peculiar clusters gradually took up the volumes occupied by the objects of the thick disk, the halo, and even the accreted halo of the Galaxy. Analysis of the relative abundances of magnesium (a representative of the ??-elements) in clusters that, according to their kinematical parameters, belong to different Galactic subsystems has shown that all clusters are composed of matter incorporating the interstellar matter of a single protogalactic cloud in different proportions, i.e., reprocessed in genetically related stars of the Galaxy. The [Mg/Fe] ratios for the clusters with thick-disk kinematics are, on average, overestimated, just as for the field stars of the socalled ??metal-rich wing?? of the thick disk. For the clusters with halo kinematics, these ratios exhibit a very large spread, suggesting that they were formed mainly from matter that experienced a history of chemical evolution different from the Galactic one. We point out that a large fraction of the open clusters with thindisk kinematics have also been formed from matter of an extragalactic nature within the last ??30 Myr.  相似文献

Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for an isolated pair of interacting galaxies, IC 1727 and NGC 672, and constructed their Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams. The galaxy IC 1727 exhibits a strong asymmetry in the apparent distribution of young stars. The distribution of old stars is smoother and less asymmetric. In the galaxy NGC672, there is no noticeable asymmetry in the distribution of stars of different ages. Based on the TRGB method, we have determined an accurate distance to each galaxy for the first time: D = 7.14 ± 0.10 Mpc for IC 1727 and D = 7.22 ± 0.10 Mpc for NGC 672, confirming that these galaxies are closely spaced. The luminosity functions of red supergiants and peripheral AGB stars in both galaxies have positionally coincident local maxima, suggesting the simultaneous enhancement of star formation in the two galaxies occurred in the intervals 20–30 and 450–700 Myr ago. The results obtained point to an enhancement of star formation processes in the interacting galaxies.  相似文献

We present high-resolution (R~20,000) spectra in the blue and the far red of circumnuclear star-forming regions (CNSFRs) in three early-type spirals (NGC3351, NGC2903 and NGC3310), which have allowed the study of the kinematics of the stars and the ionized gas in these structures and, for the first time, the derivation of their dynamical masses for the first two. In some cases, these regions, about 100 to 150 pc in size, are composed of several individual star clusters with sizes between 1.5 and 4.9 pc, estimated from Hubble Space Telescope images. The stellar dispersions have been obtained from the Calcium triplet (CaT) lines at λ λ 8494, 8542, 8662 Å, while the gas velocity dispersions have been measured by means of Gaussian fits to the Hβ and [Oiii]λ 5007 Å lines in the high-dispersion spectra. Values of the stellar velocity dispersions are between 30 and 68 km?s?1. We apply the virial theorem to estimate dynamical masses of the clusters, assuming that systems are gravitationally bounded and spherically symmetric, and using previously measured sizes. The measured values of the stellar velocity dispersions yield dynamical masses of the order of 107 to 108 M for the entire CNSFRs. Stellar and gas velocity dispersions are found to differ by about 20 to 30 km?s?1, with the Hβ emission lines being narrower than both the stellar lines and the [Oiii]λ 5007 Å lines. The douby-ionized oxygen, on the other hand, exhibits velocity dispersions comparable to those of the stars or, in some cases, even larger. We have found indications of the presence of two different kinematical components in the ionized gas of the regions. We have mapped the velocity field in the central kpc of the spiral galaxies NGC3351 and NGC2903. For the first object, the radial velocity curve shows deviations from circular motions for the ionized hydrogen consistent with its infall towards the central regions of the galaxy, at a velocity of about 25 km?s?1. For NGC3310, we present preliminary results for the velocity dispersions for one of the two observed slit position angles, two CNSFRs and the nucleus.  相似文献

Highly noncircular outer stellar disks have been detected in two SA0 (unbarred) galaxies by comparing the spectroscopic data on the rotation of stars and the photometric data on the shape and orientation of isophotes. In NGC 502, the oval distortion of the disk is manifested in the shape of the inner and outer elliptical rings occupying wide radial zones between the bulge and the disk and at the outer disk edge; such a structure can be a consequence of the so-called “dry minor merger,” multiple cannibalization of gas-free satellites. In NGC 5485, the stellar kinematics is absolutely unrelated to the orientation of isophotes in the disk region, and for this galaxy the conclusion about its global triaxial structure is unavoidable.  相似文献
