Numerical simulation is made of the transient heat conduction during local heating in a model coronal magnetic loop with an axial electric current. It is assumed that a segment near the top of the normal coronal loop is heated to above 107 K by a sufficiently small heat input as compared with the total flare energy. A hump appears in the velocity distribution of electrons moving down the temperature gradient with speeds slightly below the thermal one. Consequently, electron plasma waves are excited. The high intensity of the waves persists in the upper region of the loop for more than a second until the termination of the simulation. The energy density of the plasma waves normalized with respect to thermal density is 10–3.5 at maximum. A theoretical estimate gives an anomalous resistivity 5 orders of magnitude greater than an initial value. Based on the above result, we propose a model for impulsive loop flares.  相似文献

Numerical simulation is made of the impulsive loop flare caused by transient heat conduction along the loop with an applied axial electric current. It is assumed that a segment near the top of the coronal loop is heated to above 107 K by a heat input that is small compared with the total flare energy, which is given by the magnetic energy of the initial current. Due to the heat conduction, a hump appears in the velocity distribution of electrons, which may excite electron plasma waves with a sufficiently high intensity to cause an anomalous resistivity, as shown theoretically in a previous paper. In that paper, an effect of the plasma waves on the dynamics of electrons was taken into account consistently, but an anomalous heating due to an ohmic dissipation of the initial current under the anomalous resistivity was not taken into account. The aim of the present study is to study the subsequent dynamics of the heated gas caused by the anomalous heating, but in order to avoid an unpractically long computation time, the energy density of the plasma waves is estimated by the energy density of electrons in the velocity hump, without taking into account the effect of the plasma waves consistently in the dynamics of the electrons. The initial current starts to decay gradually by an ohmic dissipation under the anomalous resistivity occurring near the top of the loop to heat this region more. The enhanced heat conduction causes the velocity humps in a wider location. Consequently, the anomalous heating continues and spreads in a self-generating way even after the end of the initial minor heating. Thus the temperature near the loop top becomes above 108 K and the high-temperature region spreads in both directions along the loop with such a high speed as (2–3) × 104 km s–1, which is nearly equal to the speed of flux-limited heat conduction. On the other hand, induced electric field estimated from the anomalous resistivity is 3.3 × 107 V at the termination of the present simulation, under the modest initial current of 1.5 A m–2.X-ray emissions expected from the present model loop, show three sources, two footpoints with unequal brightness and a coronal source expanding along the loop in both directions.  相似文献

We have shown that a current-carrying plasma loop can be heated by magnetic pinch driven by the pressure imbalance between inside and outside the loop, using a 3-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) particle code. Both electrons and ions in the loop can be heated in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, therefore the perpendicular temperature can be increased about 10 times compared with the parallel temperature. This temperature anisotropy produced by the magnetic pinch heating can induce a plasma instability, by which high-frequency electromagnetic waves can be excited. The plasma current which is enhanced by the magnetic pinch can also excite a kinetic kink instability, which can heat ions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The heating mechanism of ions as well as the electromagnetic emission could be important for an understanding of the coronal loop heating and the electromagnetic wave emissions from active coronal regions.  相似文献

A mechanism of electron acceleration and storage of energetic particles in solar and stellar coronal magnetic loops, based on oscillations of the electric current, is considered. The magnetic loop is presented as an electric circuit with the electric current generated by convective motions in the photosphere. Eigenoscillations of the electric current in a loop induce an electric field directed along the loop axis. It is shown that the sudden reductions that occur in the course of type IV continuum and pulsating type III observed in various frequency bands (25?–?180 MHz, 110?–?600 MHz, 0.7?–?3.0 GHz) in solar flares provide evidence for acceleration and storage of the energetic electrons in coronal magnetic loops. We estimate the energization rate and the energy of accelerated electrons and present examples of the storage of energetic electrons in loops in the course of flares on the Sun or on ultracool stars. We also discuss the efficiency of the suggested mechanism as compared with the electron acceleration during the five-minute photospheric oscillations and with the acceleration driven by the magnetic Rayleigh–Taylor instability.  相似文献

The studied region is a part of the current circuit of a magnetic loop in a solar active region in the altitude range of 1400–2500 km above the photosphere. At the earliest stage of development of a flare process, the magnetic field of the loop was assumed to be stationary and uniform in the interval corresponding to weak fields (the so-called deca-hectogauss fields). The conditions for emergence and development of instability of the second harmonic of Bernstein modes in this previously unexamined region were determined. This instability (and low-frequency instabilities emerging later) was assumed to be caused by the sub-Dreicer electric field of the loop, while pair Coulomb collisions were considered to be the major factor hindering its development. The obtained extremely low instability thresholds point to the possibility of subsequent emergence of low-frequency instabilities (and plasma waves corresponding to them) with much higher threshold values against the background of saturated Bernstein turbulence. The frequency of electron scattering by turbulence pulsations in this scenario normally exceeds the frequency of pair Coulomb (primarily ion–electron) collisions. Both the quasistatic sub-Dreicer field in the loop and the weak spatial inhomogeneity of plasma temperature and density were taken into account in the process of derivation and analysis of the dispersion relation for low-frequency waves. It was demonstrated that the solutions of the obtained dispersion relation in the cases of prevalent pair Coulomb collisions and dominant electron momentum losses at pulsations of saturated Bernstein turbulence are morphologically similar and differ only in the boundary values of perturbation parameters. In both cases, these solutions correspond to the two wave families, namely, kinetic Alfven waves and kinetic ion acoustic waves. These waves have their own electric fields and may play the important role in the process of preflare acceleration of energetic electrons.  相似文献

Using a 2 1/2-D fully relativistic electromagnetic particle-in-cell code (PIC) we have investigated a potential electron acceleration mechanism in solar flares. The free energy is provided by ions which have a ring velocity distribution about the magnetic field direction. Ion rings may be produced by perpendicular shocks, which could in turn be generated by the super-Alfvénic motion of magnetic flux tubes emerging from the photosphere or by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Such ion distributions are known to be unstable to the generation of lower hybrid waves, which have phase velocities in excess of the electron thermal speed parallel to the field and can, therefore, resonantly accelerate electrons in that direction. The simulations show the transfer of perpendicular ion energy to energetic electrons via lower hybrid wave turbulence. With plausible ion ring velocities, the process can account for the observationally inferred fluxes and energies of non-thermal electrons during the impulsive phase of flares. Our results also show electrostatic wave generation close to the plasma frequency: we suggest that this is due to a bump-in-tail instability of the electron distribution.

Numerical simulation for the dynamics of a coronal filamentary magnetic loop has been made under the assumption that the field is initially force-free and an electric resistivity suddenly increases at a given moment due to an appearance of ion sound waves, which can be excited due to a high current density if a characteristic radius r 0 of the magnetic loop is about 3 km or less in a magnetic field B 0 of 1000 G. During the resistive decay of the magnetic field a strong field-aligned electric field is created and maintained for a sufficient time to acceleratie both electrons and protons to a high energy, which is proportional to B 0/r 0 and can be 100 MeV if r 0 = 10 km and B 0 = 1000 G. If the coronal magnetic tube is composed of many such filamentary loops, the total number of accelerated electrons is consistent with the observations.  相似文献

In an earlier paper (Harvey and Aubier, 1973) the large scale radial electron density gradient in the corona and solar wind was shown to cause the phase velocity of plasma waves to decrease as they propagate away from the Sun, thus leading to appreciable Landau damping of the plasma waves. It is proposed here that this same phase velocity decrease creates conditions which facilitate the stabilisation of a beam of exciter electrons of finite duration, provided that three conditions are fulfilled. Two of these conditions concern the velocity-time distribution of the exciter electrons at their point of ejection from the Sun, while the third is simply that, above a certain altitude, the coronal electron density decreases with altitude r faster than r ?2. The plasma wave source is then associated with the leading edge of the electron stream. The spatial density of the power converted into plasma waves is calculated as a function of position and time, and is shown to be independent of the nature of the stabilisation mechanism. The maximum of this power density is found to move outwards from the Sun at a uniform speed when a simple electron injection model with a Maxwellian velocity distribution is introduced.  相似文献

In coronal holes the electron (proton) density is low, and heating of the proton gas produces a rapidly increasing proton temperature in the inner corona. In models with a reasonable electron density in the upper transition region the proton gas becomes collisionless some 0.2 to 0.3 solar radii into the corona. In the collisionless region the proton heat flux is outwards, along the temperature gradient. The thermal coupling to electrons is weak in coronal holes, so the heat flux into the transition region is too small to supply the energy needed to heat the solar wind plasma to coronal temperatures. Our model studies indicate that in models with proton heating the inward heat conduction may be so inefficient that some of the energy flux must be deposited in the transition region to produce the proton fluxes that are observed in the solar wind. If we allow for coronal electron heating, the energy that is needed in the transition region to heat the solar wind to coronal temperatures, may be supplied by heat conduction from the corona.  相似文献

We study a model of particle acceleration coupled with an MHD model of magnetic reconnection in unstable twisted coronal loops. The kink instability leads to the formation of helical currents with strong parallel electric fields resulting in electron acceleration. The motion of electrons in the electric and magnetic fields of the reconnecting loop is investigated using a test-particle approach taking into account collisional scattering. We discuss the effects of Coulomb collisions and magnetic convergence near loop footpoints on the spatial distribution and energy spectra of high-energy electron populations and possible implications on the hard X-ray emission in solar flares.  相似文献

Low‐frequency instabilities of plasma waves in the arch structures in solar active regions have been investigated before a flare. In the framework of mechanism of “direct initiation” of instability by slowly increasing (quasi‐static) large‐scale electric field in a loop the dispersion relation has been studied for the perturbations which propagate almost perpendicularly to the magnetic field of the loop. The case has been considered, when amplitude of weak (“subdreicer”) electric field sharply increases before a flare, low‐frequency instability develops on the background of ion‐acoustic turbulence and thickness of this turbulent plasma layer plays the role of mean characteristic scale of inhomogeneity of plasma density. If the values of the main plasma parameters, i.e. temperature, density, magnetic field amplitude allow to neglect the influence of the shear of magnetic strength lines on the instability development, then two types of the waves can be generated in preflare plasma: the kinetic Alfvén waves and some new kind of the waves from the range of slowly magneto‐acoustic ones. Instability of kinetic Alfvén waves has clearly expressed threshold character with respect to the amplitude of “subdreicer” electric field. This fact seems to be useful for the short‐time prediction of a flare in arch structure. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In an earlier paper, Bowers (1973), ion plasma oscillations were found to be unstable in the steady state developed by Cowley (1972) for the neutral sheet in the Earth's geomagnetic tail. In this paper a similar stability analysis is carried out but for a different steady state, suggested by Dungey, with the result that unstable waves with frequencies near the electron plasma frequency are found. In the Dungey steady state the current necessary for magnetic field reversal is carried by plasma originating from both the magnetosheath and the lobes of the tail. This modifies the steady state proposed by Alfvén and subsequently developed by Cowley in which all the current is carried by plasma from the lobes of the tail thereby fixing the cross-tail potential Φ. With magnetosheath plasma present the value of Φ is no longer fixed solely by parameters in the lobes of the tail but the cross-tail electric field is still assumed localised in the dusk region of the sheet as in the Cowley model due to the balance of charge required in the neutral sheet. The value of Φ can be expected to increase as magnetic flux is transported to the tail which inflates and causes flux annihilation because the magneto-sheath plasma in the neutral sheet has insufficient pressure to keep the two lobes of the tail apart. The Vlasov-Maxwell set of equations is perturbed and linearised enabling a critical condition for instability to be found for modes propagating across the tail. Typically, this condition requireseΦ≳KT m whereT m is the temperature of magnetosheath electrons. The instability occurs in the presence of cold plasma which hasE×B drifted into the neutral sheet from the lobes of the tail. This contrasts with the usual two stream instability which is stabilised by the cold plasma. Once precipitated the instability may be explosive provided current disruption occurs, for then a further increase in Φ will result which drives a greater range of wave numbers unstable thereby causing even more turbulence and an even larger cross-tail electric field. Because of this behaviour the instability may be a trigger for a substorm.  相似文献

When the K-corona is formed by the scattering of photospheric radiation from free electrons, the Fraunhofer lines are greatly broadened by the thermal motions of the hot electrons. This paper discusses the possibility of measuring the coronal electron temperature from the residual depressions in the K-coronal spectrum. If the ratio of the intensities at 4100 Å and 3900 Å can be measured to an accuracy of ±1%, the coronal temperature can be inferred to an accuracy of ±0.2 MK. The temperature of a coronal inhomogeneity may also be measured by this method, provided the position angle is known. Now at Fraunhofer Institute, Freiburg, Germany.  相似文献

The process of origination and development of instabilities of the longitudinal waves of two types, namely, low-frequency ion-acoustic and high-frequency (“electronic”) Langmuir waves, in the preflare atmosphere of an active solar region are studied. The area under study is located at the chromospheric part of the flare loop near its footpoint. A weak large-scale electric field of flaring loop is the main source of these instabilities. The velocity of an electronic flow in the preflare plasma is supposed to be much lower than thermal electron velocity. Instability development is considered against the background of small-scale Bernstein wave turbulence, which exists in the preflare plasma and has an extremely low threshold of excitation. The necessary conditions for the instability origination and development, as well as the boundary values of the main plasma and wave perturbation parameters, are calculated.  相似文献

We investigate how fast magnetosonic waves can be produced from a pinching current sheet, by using 3-D MHD code. We show that after magnetic pinch of the current sheet due to pressure imbalance, the current sheet begins to expand by an excess of plasma pressure at the center of the current sheet. During the expansion phase, strong fast magnetosonic waves can be created at the steep region of the density gradient and propagate away from the current sheet. It is shown that the fast magnetosonic waves become unstable against modulational instability, as found by Sakai (1983). After the emission of the fast magnetosonic waves, the current sheet will relax to a new equilibrium state, where the current sheet can be heated by adiabatic compression. The emission processes of the fast magnetosonic waves from the current sheet, as well as the modulational instability of these waves that can lead to effective plasma heating through the Landau damping of the slow waves, are important for an understanding of coronal heating and coronal transient brightening.  相似文献

We consider the plasma mechanism of sub-terahertz emission from solar flares and determine the conditions for its realization in the solar atmosphere. The source is assumed to be localized at the chromospheric footpoints of coronal magnetic loops, where the electron density should reach n ≈ 1015 cm?3. This requires chromospheric heating at heights h ? 500 km to coronal temperatures, which provides a high degree of ionization needed for Langmuir frequencies ν p ≈ 200–400 GHz and reduces the bremsstrahlung absorption of the sub-THz emission as it escapes from the source. The plasma wave excitation threshold for electron-ion collisions imposes a constraint on the lower density limit for energetic electrons in the source, n 1 > 4 × 109 cm?3. The generation of emission at the plasma frequency harmonic ν ≈ 2ν p rather than the fundamental tone turns out to be preferred. We show that the electron acceleration and plasma heating in the sub-THz emission source can be realized when the ballooning mode of the flute instability develops at the chromospheric footpoints of a flare loop. The flute instability leads to the penetration of external chromospheric plasma into the loop and causes the generation of an inductive electric field that efficiently accelerates the electrons and heats the chromosphere in situ. We show that the ultraviolet radiation from the heated chromosphere emerging in this case does not exceed the level observed during flares.  相似文献

Requirements for the number of nonthermal electrons which must be accelerated in the impulsive phase of a flare are reviewed. These are uncertain by two orders of magnitude depending on whether hard X-rays above 25 keV are produced primarily by hot thermal electrons which contain a small fraction of the flare energy or by nonthermal streaming electrons which contain > 50% of the flare energy. Possible acceleration mechanisms are considered to see to what extent either X-ray production scenario can be considered viable. Direct electric field acceleration is shown to involve significant heating. In addition, candidate primary energy release mechanisms to convert stored magnetic energy into flare energy, steady reconnection and the tearing mode instability, transfer at least half of the stored energy into heat and most of the remaining energy to ions. Acceleration by electron plasma waves requires that the waves be driven to large amplitude by electrons with large streaming velocities or by anisotropic ion-acoustic waves which also require streaming electrons for their production. These in turn can only come from direct electric field acceleration since it is shown that ion-acoustic waves excited by the primary current cannot amplify electron plasma waves. Thus, wave acceleration is subject to the same limitations as direct electric field acceleration. It is concluded that at most 0.1% of the flare energy can be deposited into nonthermal streaming electrons with the energy conversion mechanisms as they have been proposed and known acceleration mechanisms. Thus, hard X-ray production above 10 keV primarily by hot thermal electrons is the only choice compatible with models for the primary energy release as they presently exist.  相似文献

Numerical analysis has been carried out on the one-dimensional quasi-linear relaxation of a group of fast electrons travelling through the plasma. It is demonstrated that the electron velocity distribution of fast electrons tends to be a plateau form exciting the electron plasma waves and that the plasma waves are almost completely reabsorbed later by electrons arriving later. Both the velocity range and time interval in which quasi-plateau distribution is formed increase with distance from the origin of the fast electrons. There is no net energy loss of the electron cloud during the travel through the plasma if we neglect both the collisional losses and the scattering of plasma waves. Although the present computation is preliminary and limited to rather low beam density, we can see that the characteristics of both the electron beam and the plasma waves tend, with distance, to those of the analytical solution given by Ryutov and Sagdeev; though a modification to set a low velocity cutoff on the plasma waves due to the thermal electrons is necessary.  相似文献
