We studied experimental data on ultra-violet (UV) nightglow in the wavelength range 300-400 nm, and energetic electron fluxes measured by low-altitude polar satellite Universitetskii-Tatiana. From statistical analysis we have found three latitudinal regions of enhanced UV emission at low, middle and high latitudes. Modeling the electron precipitations to the atmosphere gave numerical estimation of the generated UV radiation. We found that the stable and quasi-stable fluxes of electrons precipitating at middle and low latitudes are too weak to explain the observed intensities of UV radiation. The high-latitude UV nightglow with intensity of several kiloRayleighs results from particle precipitation in the regions of aurora and outer radiation belt. The low-latitude UV enhancements of several hundreds Rayleighs can be related to the emission of mesospheric atomic oxygen whose concentration increases substantially at latitudes from 20° to 40°. A mechanism of the mid-latitude UV enhancements is still unknown and requires further investigations.  相似文献

The moon Enceladus, embedded in Saturn’s radiation belts, is the main internal source of neutral and charged particles in the Kronian magnetosphere. A plume of water ice molecules and dust released through geysers on the south polar region provides enough material to feed the E-ring and also the neutral torus of Saturn and the entire magnetosphere. In the time period 2005–2010 the Cassini spacecraft flew close by the moon 14 times, sometimes as low as 25 km above the surface and directly through the plume. For the very first time measurements of plasma and energetic particles inside the plume and its immediate vicinity could be obtained. In this work we summarize the results of energetic electron measurements in the energy range 27 keV to 21 MeV taken by the Low Energy Magnetospheric Measurement System (LEMMS), part of the Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) onboard Cassini in the vicinity of the moon in combination with measurements of the magnetometer instrument MAG and the Electron Spectrometer ELS of the plasma instrument CAPS onboard the spacecraft. Features in the data can be interpreted as that the spacecraft was connected to the plume material along field lines well before entering the high density region of the plume. Sharp absorption signatures as the result of losses of energetic electrons bouncing along those field lines, through the emitted gas and dust clouds, clearly depend on flyby geometry as well as on measured pitch angle/look direction of the instrument. We found that the depletion signatures during some of the flybys show “ramp-like” features where only a partial depletion has been observed further away from the moon followed by nearly full absorption of electrons closer in. We interpret this as partially/fully connected to the flux tube connecting the moon with Cassini. During at least two of the flybys (with some evidence of one additional encounter) MIMI/LEMMS data are consistent with the presence of dust in energetic electron data when Cassini flew directly through the south polar plume. In addition we found gradients in the magnetic field components which are frequently found to be associated with changes in the MIMI/LEMMS particles intensities. This indicates that complex electron drifts in the vicinity of Enceladus could form forbidden regions for electrons which may appear as intensity drop-outs.  相似文献

Previous work by Scoffield, H.C., Yeoman, T.K., Wright, D.M., Milan, S.E., Wright, A.N., Strangeway, R.J. [2005. An investigation of the field aligned currents associated with a large scale ULF wave using data from CUTLASS and FAST. Ann. Geophys. 23, 487–498) investigated a large-scale ULF wave, occurring in the dusk sector (∼1900 MLT). The wave had a period of ∼800 s (corresponding to 1.2 mHz frequency), an azimuthal wave number of ∼7 and a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) across the resonance of 350 km. IMAGE ground magnetometer and SuperDARN radar observations of the wave's spatial and temporal characteristics were used to parameterise a simple, two-dimensional field line resonance (FLR) model. The model-calculated field-aligned current (FAC) was compared with FACs derived from the FAST energetic particle spectra and magnetic field measurement. Here the authors use the same method to investigate the FAC structure of a second large-scale ULF wave, with a period of ∼450 s, occurring the dawn sector (∼0500 MLT) with an opposite sense background region 1–region 2 current system. This wave has a much larger longitudinal scale (m∼4.5) and a smaller latitude scale (FWHM=150 km). Unlike the dusk sector wave, which was dominated by upward FAC, FAST observations of the dawn sector wave show an interval of large-scale downward FAC of ∼1.5 μA m−2. Downgoing magnetospheric electrons with energies of a few keV were observed, which are associated with upward FACs of ∼1 μA m−2. For both wave studies, downward currents appear to be carried partially by upgoing electrons below the FAST energy detection threshold (5 eV), but also consist of a mixture of hotter downgoing magnetospheric electrons and upgoing ionospheric electrons of energies 30 eV–1 keV. Strong intervals of upward current show that small-scale structuring of scale ∼50 km has been imposed on the current carriers. In general, this study confirms the findings of Scoffield, H.C., Yeoman, T.K., Wright, D.M., Milan, S.E., Wright, A.N., Strangeway, R.J. [2005. An investigation of the FACs associated with a large-scale ULF wave using data from CUTLASS and FAST. Ann. Geophys. 23, 487–498).  相似文献

Mid-infrared images of almost the entire Venus nightside hemisphere obtained by the Longwave Infrared Camera (LIR) onboard Akatsuki on December 9 and 10, 2010 reveal that the brightness temperature of the cloud-top ranges from 237 K in the cold polar collars to 243 K in the equatorial region, significantly higher than the values obtained by Venera 15. Other characteristic features of the temperature distributions observed are zonal belt structures seen in the middle and low latitudes and patchy temperature structures or quasi-periodic streaks extending in a north–south direction in the northern middle latitudes and southern low latitudes.  相似文献

An automated cloud tracking algorithm is applied to Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem high-resolution apoapsis images of Saturn from 2005 and 2007 and moderate resolution images from 2011 and 2012 to define the near-global distribution of zonal winds and eddy momentum fluxes at the middle troposphere cloud level and in the upper troposphere haze. Improvements in the tracking algorithm combined with the greater feature contrast in the northern hemisphere during the approach to spring equinox allow for better rejection of erroneous wind vectors, a more objective assessment at any latitude of the quality of the mean zonal wind, and a population of winds comparable in size to that available for the much higher contrast atmosphere of Jupiter. Zonal winds at cloud level changed little between 2005 and 2007 at all latitudes sampled. Upper troposphere zonal winds derived from methane band images are ~10 m s?1 weaker than cloud level winds in the cores of eastward jets and ~5 m s?1 stronger on either side of the jet core, i.e., eastward jets appear to broaden with increasing altitude. In westward jet regions winds are approximately the same at both altitudes. Lateral eddy momentum fluxes are directed into eastward jet cores, including the strong equatorial jet, and away from westward jet cores and weaken with increasing altitude on the flanks of the eastward jets, consistent with the upward broadening of these jets. The conversion rate of eddy to mean zonal kinetic energy at the visible cloud level is larger in eastward jet regions (5.2 × 10?5 m2 s?3) and smaller in westward jet regions (1.6 × 10?5 m2 s?3) than the global mean value (4.1 × 10?5 m2 s?3). Overall the results are consistent with theories that suggest that the jets and the overturning meridional circulation at cloud level on Saturn are maintained at least in part by eddies due to instabilities of the large-scale flow near and/or below the cloud level.  相似文献

Unusual wave activity in the Pc 1–2 frequency band (0.1–5 Hz) was observed by the Cluster spacecraft in association with the two large geomagnetic storms of late 2003. During the onset of the Hallowe’en storm on October 29, 2003, intense broadband activity between ∼0.1 and 0.6 Hz appeared at all 4 spacecraft on both sides of the magnetic equator at perigee (near 1400 UT and 08:45 MLT). Power was especially strong and more structured in frequency in the compressional component: a minimum in wave power was observed at 0.38 Hz, corresponding to the oxygen ion cyclotron frequency. Poynting vector calculations indicated that wave power was primarily directed radially inward rather than along the magnetic field. Narrowband purely compressional waves near 0.15 Hz appeared at higher dayside latitudes in the southern hemisphere. CIS ion spectrometer data during this pass revealed that O+ was the dominant energetic ion. During the recovery phase of the November storm, on November 22, 2003, predominantly transverse 1.8 Hz waves with peak-to-peak amplitude of 10 nT were observed by all four spacecraft near perigee at L=4.4. During this more typical Pc 1 event, wave power was directed along B, toward the northern ionosphere. An unusually polarized 2.3 Hz emission (with power in the radial and compressional, but not azimuthal directions) was observed at L=5.4–5.9, 10–15° south of the magnetic equator. We infer that this wave event may have been generated on lower L shells and propagated obliquely to Cluster's location. Consistent with other recent observations, anisotropic plasma sheet/ring current proton distributions appeared to be a necessary condition for occurrence of waves during both passes, but was not always a sufficient condition. The transverse waves of November 22 occurred in regions which also contained greatly increased fluxes of cool ions (E<1 keV). On both days, Cluster observed features not previously reported, and we note that the purely compressional nature of the October 29 events was not anticipated in previous theoretical studies. The fact that these unusually polarized waves occurred in association with very intense geomagnetic storms suggests that they are likely to be extremely rare.  相似文献

In view of the renewed interest in the study of energetic particles in the outer radiation belt of the earth, we feel it will be helpful in looking for the energy dependence of the electron energy spectrum at geostationary orbit. This may give us some insight into how we can safeguard geostationary satellites from functional anomalies of the deep dielectric charging type, which are caused by charge accumulation and subsequent discharge of relativistic electrons. In this study we examine whether there is any energy dependence in relativistic electron enhancements at geosynchronous altitudes during solar energetic proton events of 2005.  相似文献

Observations of the dayside of Venus performed by the high spectral resolution channel (–H) of the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on board the ESA Venus Express mission have been used to measure the altitude of the cloud tops and the water vapor abundance around this level with a spatial resolution ranging from 100 to 10 km. CO2 and H2O bands between 2.48 and 2.60 μm are analyzed to determine the cloud top altitude and water vapor abundance near this level. At low latitudes (±40°) mean water vapor abundance is equal to 3 ± 1 ppm and the corresponding cloud top altitude at 2.5 μm is equal to 69.5 ± 2 km. Poleward from middle latitudes the cloud top altitude gradually decreases down to 64 km, while the average H2O abundance reaches its maximum of 5 ppm at 80° of latitude with a large scatter from 1 to 15 ppm. The calculated mass percentage of the sulfuric acid solution in cloud droplets of mode 2 (~1 μm) particles is in the range 75–83%, being in even more narrow interval of 80–83% in low latitudes. No systematic correlation of the dark UV markings with the cloud top altitude or water vapor has been observed.  相似文献

Water is not currently stable in liquid form on the martian surface due to the present mean atmospheric pressure of ~7 mbar and mean global temperature of ~220 K. However, geomorphic features and hydrated mineral assemblages suggest that Mars’ climate was once warmer and liquid water flowed on the surface. These observations may indicate a substantially more massive atmosphere in the past, but there have been few observational constraints on paleoatmospheric pressures. Here we show how the 40Ar/36Ar ratios of trapped gases within martian meteorite ALH 84001 constrain paleoatmospheric pressure on Mars during the Noachian era [~4.56–3.8 billion years (Ga)]. Our model indicates that atmospheric pressures did not exceed ~1.5 bar during the first 400 million years (Ma) of the Noachian era, and were <400 mbar by 4.16 Ga. Such pressures of CO2 are only sufficient to stabilize liquid water on Mars’ surface at low latitudes during seasonally warm periods. Other greenhouse gases like SO2 and water vapor may have played an important role in intermittently stabilizing liquid water at higher latitudes following major volcanic eruptions or impact events.  相似文献

A heliopause spectrum at 122 AU from the Sun is presented for galactic electrons over an energy range from 1 MeV to 50 GeV that can be considered the lowest possible local interstellar spectrum (LIS). The focus of this work is on the spectral shape of the LIS below ∼1.0 GeV. The study is done by using a comprehensive numerical model for solar modulation in comparison with Voyager 1 observations at ∼112 AU from the Sun and PAMELA data at Earth. Below ∼1.0 GeV, this LIS exhibits a power law with E−(1.55 ± 0.05), where E is the kinetic energy of these electrons. However, reproducing the PAMELA electron spectrum averaged for 2009, requires a LIS with a different power law of the form E−(3.15 ± 0.05) above ∼5 GeV. Combining the two power laws with a smooth transition from low to high energies yields a LIS over the full energy range that is relevant and applicable to the modulation of cosmic ray electrons in the heliosphere. The break occurs between ∼800 MeV and ∼2 GeV as a characteristic feature of this LIS. The power-law form below ∼1 GeV produces a challenge to the origin of these low energy galactic electrons. On the other hand, the results of this study can be used as a gauge for astrophysical modeling of the local interstellar spectrum for electrons.  相似文献

We perform and present a wavelet analysis on all 31 Cassini electron density profiles published to date (Nagy, A.F. et al. [2006]. J. Geophys. Res. 111 (A6), CiteID A06310; Kliore, A.J. et al. [2009]. J. Geophys. Res. 114 (A4), CiteID A04315). We detect several discrete scales of variability present in the observations. Small-scale variability (S < 700 km) is observed in almost all data sets at different latitudes, both at dawn and dusk conditions. The most typical scale of variability is 300 km with scales between 200 km and 450 km being commonly present in the vast majority of the profiles. A low latitude dawn/dusk asymmetry is noted in the prevalent scales with the spectrum peaking sharply at the 300 km scale at dusk conditions and being broader at dawn conditions. Compared to dawn conditions the dusk ionosphere also shows more significant variability at the 100 km scale. The 300 km vertical scale is also present in the few available profiles from the northern hemisphere. Early observations from 2005 show a dominant scale at 350 km whereas later in 2007–2008 the spectrum shifts to the shorter scales with the most prominent scale being 300 km. The performed wavelet analysis and the obtained results are independent of assumptions about the nature of the layers and do not require a definition for a “background” electron density profile. In the second part of the paper we present a gravity wave propagation/dissipation model for Saturn’s upper atmosphere and compare the wave properties to the characteristics of the observed electron density variability at different scales. The general features observed in the data are consistent with gravity waves being present in the lower ionosphere and causing layering of the ions and the electrons. The wave-driving mechanism provides a simultaneous explanation for several of the properties of the observed variability: (i) lack of variability in the electron density above the predicted region of wave dissipation; (ii) in most cases the peak amplitude of variability occurs within the altitude range for dissipation of gravity waves or below; (iii) shorter scales have smaller amplitudes than the longer scales; (iv) shorter scales are present at lower altitudes whereas longer scales persist to higher altitudes; and (v) several layers often form a system of equally spaced maxima and minima that can be traced over a large altitude range.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectra of FK Comae and V1794 Cygni observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (HST COS) and the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellites were analyzed for the period 1981–2011. Temporal variations of line fluxes of the O I 1306 Å, C II 1336 Å, C IV 1550 Å, He II 1640 Å and Mg II k & h 2800 Å, produced in the transition regions and chromospheres of these stars, imply variations in density and temperature changes in the line emitting regions as a result of the rapid rotation and magnetic fields responsible for stellar activity. Results are consistent with the models of Ramsey et al. (1981), Oliveira and Foing (1999), and Korhonen et al. (2000).  相似文献

Recent papers suggest the significant variability of conditions in Saturn’s magnetosphere at the orbit of Titan. Because of this variability, it was expected that models would generally have a difficult time regularly comparing to data from the Titan flybys. However, we find that in contrast to this expectation, it appears that there is underlying organization of the interaction features roughly above ~1800 km (1.7 Rt) altitude by the average external field due to Saturn’s dipole moment. In this study, we analyze Cassini’s plasma and magnetic field data collected at 9 Titan encounters during which the external field is close to the ideal southward direction and compare these observations to the results from a 2-fluid (1 ion, 1 electron) 7-species MHD model simulations obtained under noon SLT conditions. Our comparative analysis shows that under noon SLT conditions the Titan plasma interaction can be viewed in two layers: an outer layer between 6400 and 1800 km where interaction features observed in the magnetic field are in basic agreement with a purely southward external field interaction and an inner layer below 1800 km where the magnetic field measurements show strong variations and deviate from the model predictions. Thus the basic features inferred from the Voyager 1 flyby seem to be generally present above ~1800 km in spite of the ongoing external variations from SLT excursions, time variability and magnetospheric current systems as long as a significant southward external field component is present. At around ~1800 km kinetic effects (such as mass loading and heavy ion pickup) and below 1800 km ionospheric effects (such as drag of ionospheric plasma due to coupling with neutral winds and/or magnetic memory of Titan’s ionosphere) complicate what is observed.  相似文献

We present ultraviolet spectra of the AE Aqr binary system taken by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) during the period from 1978 to 1993, to accomplish a large scale study of what happens to the ultraviolet fluxes of different emission lines during different orbital phases. Five profiles of AE Aqr binary system show variations of line fluxes at different orbital phases are presented. We concentrated on studying N V emission line at 1240 Å, O I emission line at 1306 Å, He II emission line at 1640 Å, N III emission line at 1749 Å and Si III emission line at 1892 Å, produced in the line emitting gas (Eracleous et al., 1994, Eracleous and Horne, 1996), by calculating the line fluxes of these spectral lines. Our results show that there are spectral variations of line fluxes for the aforementioned emission lines at different times, similar to the light curves found for AE Aqr binary system by using ASCA, XMM – Newton and Chandra X-ray observations (Mauche, 2006). We attributed these spectral variations to the variations of the mass-transfer rate (Ikhsanov et al., 2004) and to the collisions between the compact blobs and the fluffy blobs, where the collisions are supersonic, shocking the gas, causing heating, then expansion (Eracleous et al., 1994, Eracleous and Horne, 1996, Horne, 2009).  相似文献

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the association of solar energetic particle (SEP) events with halo coronal mass ejections (CME) and with their associated solar flares during the period 1997–2014 (solar cycle 23 and 24). We have found that halo CMEs are more effective in producing SEP events. The occurrence probability and peak fluxes of SEPs strongly depend on the halo CMEs speed (V) as follows. The highest associations, 56% for occurrence probability and 90% for average peak fluxes, are found for the halo CMEs with V> 1400 km s−1 but the lowest associations, 20% for occurrence probability and 5% for average peak fluxes, are found for halo CMEs with speed range 600 ≤ V ≤ 1000 km s−1. We have also examined the relationship between SEP events and halo CME associated solar flares and found that 73% of events are associated with western solar flares while only 27% are with eastern solar flares. For longitudinal study, 0–20° belt is found to be more dominant for the SEP events. The association of SEP events with latitudinal solar flares is also examined in the study. 51% of events are associated with those halo CMEs associated solar flares which occur in the southern hemisphere of the Sun while 49% are with those solar flares that occur in the northern hemisphere of the Sun. Also, 10–20° latitudinal belt is found to be likely associated with the SEP events. Further, 45% of SEP events are associated with M-class solar flares while 44% and 11% are with X and C-class respectively. Maximum number of SEP events are found for the fast halo CME associated X- class solar flares (68%) than M and C- class solar flares.  相似文献

Both the MARSIS ionospheric sounder and the charged particle instrument package ASPERA-3 are experiments on board the Mars Express spacecraft. Joint observations have shown that events of intense ionospheric electron density enhancements occur in the lower ionosphere of magnetic cusp regions, and that these enhancements are not associated with precipitation of charged particles above a few hundred electron volts (<300 eV). To account for the enhancement by particle precipitation, electron fluxes are required with mean energy between 1 and 10 keV. No ionizing radiation, neither energetic particles nor X-rays, could be identified, which could produce the observed density enhancement only in the spatially limited cusp regions. Actually, no increase in ionizing radiation, localized or not, was observed during these events. It is argued that the process causing the increase in density is controlled mainly by convection of ionosphere plasma driven by the interaction between the solar wind and crustal magnetic field lines leading to excitation of two-stream plasma waves in the cusp ionosphere. The result is to heat the plasma, reduce the electron–ion recombination coefficient and thereby increase the equilibrium electron density.  相似文献

Near-infrared observations of Uranus were made in October/November 2010 with the Gemini-North telescope in Hawaii, using NIFS, an integral field spectrograph, and the NIRI instrument in imaging mode. Observations were acquired using adaptive optics and have a spatial resolution of approximately 0.1–0.2″.The observed spectra along Uranus’ central meridian were analysed using a multiple-scattering retrieval algorithm to infer the vertical/latitudinal variation in cloud optical depth, which we compare with previous observations made by Gemini-North/NIFS in 2009 and UKIRT/UIST observations made between 2006 and 2008. Assuming a continuous distribution of small particles (r  1 μm, and refractive index of 1.4 + 0i) with the single scattering albedo set to 0.75 and using a Henyey–Greenstein phase function with asymmetry parameter set to 0.7 at all wavelengths and latitudes, the retrieved cloud density profiles show that the north polar zone at 45°N has continued to steadily brighten while the south polar zone at 45°S has continued to fade. As with our previous analyses we find that, assuming that the methane vertical profile is the same at all latitudes, the clouds forming these polar zones at 45°N and 45°S lie at slightly lower pressures than the clouds at more equatorial latitudes. However, we also find that the Gemini data can be reproduced by assuming that the main cloud remains fixed at ~2 bar at all latitudes and adjusting the relative humidity of methane instead. In this case we find that the deep cloud is still more opaque at the equator and at the zones at 45°N and 45°S and shows the same seasonal trends as when the methane humidity remain fixed. However, with this approach the relative humidity of methane is seen to rise sharply from approximately 20% at polar latitudes to values closer to 80% for latitudes equatorward of 45°S and 45°N, consistent with the analysis of 2002 HST observations by Karkoschka and Tomasko (Karkoschka, E., Tomasko, M. [2009]. Icarus 202, 287–302), with a possible indication of seasonal variability. Overall, Uranus appeared to be less convectively active in 2010 than in the previous 4 years, supporting the conclusion that now the northern spring equinox (which occurred in 2007) has passed, the atmosphere is settling back into the more quiescent state seen by Voyager 2 in 1986.  相似文献

Unusual auroral emission at mid-latitudes, showing nearly exclusively the green oxygen line (557.7 nm) and occurring during the early part of the recovery phase after strong magnetic storms is described. The emission has a life-time of up to several hours, consists of cloud-like patches and appears quite isolated at medium latitudes with no simultaneous aurorae at higher latitudes. The name “post-storm mid-latitude green aurora” is proposed for this emission. For the event observed during the night of 29–30 August 1978, additional ionospheric measurements from heights below the mid-latitude aurora (?min, A3-LF data) are available from nearby observations. Our investigation shows that the emission was observed just at the beginning of a post-storm effect (PSE) in ionospheric absorption. The optical and absorption data have been used to extract information on precipitating high-energy electrons, assumed to be the cause of both the optical emisson and the excessive absorption. During the night in question precipitating electrons with fluxes above the quiet-time level and energies upto at least 200 keV were found in a region extended in latitude (2.7 < L < 3.3) and probably even more extended in longitude. Latitudinally narrow bands, elongated along shells of constant L, with extremely high fluxes of 10–20keV electrons (according to our estimates at least 5. 107 el cm?2s?1) were embedded within this region.  相似文献

Using the STEERB (storm-time evolution of electron radiation belt) code, we simulate the evolution of radiation belt energetic electrons during geomagnetic storms in the case of low energy electron injection. The STEERB code is used to solve the three-dimensional Fokker–Planck diffusion equation which incorporates wave-particle interaction, Coulomb collisions and radial diffusion. Numerical simulations show that under the short time (~1 h) injection of low energy (0.1 MeV≤E k ≤0.2 MeV) fluxes of radiation belt energetic electrons can increase during the entire storm period. During the main and recovery phases, such injection efficiently enhances chorus-driven acceleration of radiation belt energetic electrons, allowing fluxes of energetic electrons by a factor of 1–2 orders higher than those in the absence of injection. The current results indicate that substorm-induced electron injection must be incorporated to investigate the evolution of radiation belt energetic electrons.  相似文献

Methane clathrate hydrate reservoirs capped by overlying permafrost have been proposed as potential sources of atmospheric methane plumes on Mars. However, the surface flux of methane from hydrate dissociation is limited by the diffusion rate of methane through the overlying ice. Assuming hydrates underlay the entire plume footprint, the maximum diffusion path length is expected to be less than 15 m, depths too shallow to stabilize pure methane hydrates under Mars geothermal and lithostatic conditions at low to mid latitudes. Therefore, pure methane hydrates confined within permafrost could not produce methane surface fluxes of the magnitude observed near the equator. However, the addition of 10% H2S, a secondary gas commonly associated with methane production on Earth, expands the hydrate stability field, with clathrates expected within 10 m of the surface at the equator and at depths less than 1 m at higher latitudes. This indicates that H2S would also be expected to be released as well as methane if the plumes have a confined hydrate reservoir source.  相似文献
