Activities of the naturally occurring radionuclides, 210Pb and 210Po, were measured in both dissolved (<0.45 μm) and particulate (>0.45 μm) phases from surface waters of the southern South China Sea. The average activity of particulate 210Pb, 0.23 Bq/m3 (n=23), accounted for about 12% of the total 210Pb, which corresponds with values of open oceans. Particulate 210Po, with an average activity of 0.43 Bq/m3, accounted for about 40% of the total 210Po, which was much higher than those of open and eutrophic oceans. The residence times of total 210Po and 210Pb in surface waters estimated from an irreversible steady-state model were 0.82 a and 1.16 a, respectively. The consistently high fractionation factor calculated either by scavenging rate constants (5.42) or Kd values (6.69) suggested that a significant fractionation occurred between 210Po and 210Pb during their removal from solution to particles and that the two radionuclides had different biogeochemical cycling pathways in the oligotrophic South China Sea. Furthermore, our results indicated that there exist different fractionation mechanisms between 210Po and 210Pb in different marine environments: in eutrophic ocean, plankton detritus and fecal pellets are the main carrier of 210Po and 210Pb, by which 210Po and 210Pb have been scavenged and removed; while in oligotrophic ocean, microbes could become the main carrier of 210Po and fractionate 210Po and 210Pb significantly as a result of scarce plankton detritus and fecal pellets. These results suggest the use of 210Po to trace marine biogeochemical processes relating to microbial activities and the cycling of sulfur group elements (S, Se, Te and Po).  相似文献

The 1977–1978 French New-Zealand summer campaign at Mount Erebus took place during a period of rather low activity. In such conditions, we could measure an output of 3 Ci of 210Pb, 100 Ci of 210Po and 1010 tons of sulfate per year.The 210Po seems to be the only element emitted by Mount Erebus whose contribution to the Antarctic atmosphere is significant: sulfur compounds as well as radon emitted by Mount Erebus during a period of quiescent activity, have a negligible contribution to the overall Antarctic budgets.The presence of long-lived radon daughters in volcanic gases, highly enriched in volatile elements, seems to be a characteristic of gases emitted directly from the magma at high temperature.  相似文献

The distribution of210Po and210Po in dissolved (<0.4 μm) and particulate (>0.4 μm) phases has been measured at ten stations in the tropical and eastern North Atlantic and at two stations in the Pacific. Both radionuclides occur principally in the dissolved phase. Unsupported210Pb activities, maintained by flux from the atmosphere, are present in the surface mixed layer and penetrate into the thermocline to depths of about 500 m. Dissolved210Po is ordinarily present in the mixed layer at less than equilibrium concentrations, suggesting rapid biological removal of this nuclide. Particulate matter is enriched in210Po, with210Po/210Pb activity ratios greater than 1.0, similar to those reported for phytoplankton. Box-model calculations yield a 2.5-year residence time for210Pb and a 0.6-year residence time for210Po in the mixed layer. These residence times are considerably longer than the time calculated for turnover of particles in the mixed layer (about 0.1 year). At depths of 100–300 m,210Po maxima occur and unsupported210Po is frequently present. Calculations indicate that at least 50% of the210Po removed from the mixed layer is recycled within the thermocline. Similar calculations for210Pb suggest much lower recycling efficiencies.Comparison of the210Pb distribution with the reported distribution of226Ra at nearby GEOSECS stations has confirmed the widespread existence of a210Pb/226Ra disequilibrium in the deep sea. Vertical profiles of particulate210Pb were used to test the hypothesis that210Pb is removed from deep water by in-situ scavenging. With the exception of one profile taken near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, significant vertical gradients in particulate210Pb concentration were not observed, and it is necessary to invoke exceptionally high particle sinking velocities to account for the inferred210Pb flux. It is proposed instead that an additional sink for210Pb in the deep sea must be sought. Estimates of the dissolved210Pb/226Ra activity ratio at depths greater than 1000 m range from 0.2 to 0.8 and reveal a systematic increase, in both vertical and horizontal directions, with increasing distance from the sea floor. This observation implies rapid scavenging of210Pb at the sediment-water interface and is consistent with a horizontal eddy diffusivity of 3?6 × 107 cm2/sec. The more reactive element Po, on the other hand, shows evidence of rapid in-situ scavenging. In filtered seawater,210Po is deficient, on the average, by ca. 10% relative to210Pb; a corresponding enrichment is found in the particulate phase. Total inventories of210Pb and210Po over the entire water column, however, show no significant departure from secular equilibrium.  相似文献

The distribution of “ash” (the non-combustible fraction of marine suspended matter) and concentrations of particulate Al, Ca, Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Sr and234Th in surface waters and of210Pb,230Th and234Th in two vertical profiles (385–4400 m) of the Indian Ocean are reported.The ash concentrations in surface waters follow the primary productivity pattern, with higher abundances in samples south of 40°S and lower concentrations in the equatorial and subtropical regions. Opaline silica and CaCO3 are the dominant components of the ash in samples from >40°S and from 7°N to 39°S, respectively. Aluminosilicates are only a minor constituent of the surface particulate matter. The metal/Al ratios in the surface particles are significantly higher compared to their corresponding crustal ratios for all the metals analyzed in this work. Comparison of enrichment factors between marine aerosols, plankton and surface oceanic particles, seem to indicate that this high metal/Al ratio in surface particles most likely arises from their involvement in marine biogeochemical cycles. Particulate234Th activity in surface waters parallels the ash abundance implying that its scavenging efficiency from surface waters depends on the particulate concentration.The particulate230Th and210Pb concentration profiles increase monotonously with depth. It is difficult to ascribe this increase to a process other than the in-situ vertical scavenging of230Th and210Pb from the water column by settling particles. The mean settling velocities of particles calculated from the particulate230Th data using a one-dimensional settling model is about 2 × 10?3 cm/s. The settling velocity computed from the particulate230Th profiles does not appear to be compatible with the particulate210Pb depth profiles; one possible explanation to account for the disparity would be that230Th and210Pb are scavenged by different size populations of particles.On the whole, the geographic distribution of particulate matter, their composition and settling velocities in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans are similar indicating that they are controlled by quite similar processes in the marine hydrosphere.  相似文献

The progressive weakening and final disappearance (in 1979) of the long-term meromictic structure of the Dead Sea are clearly reflected in the depth profiles of210Pb and210Po. In 1977/78, prior to overturn, dissolved210Pb (35–50 dpm kg?1) predominated over particulate210Pb (1–2 dpm kg?1) in the oxic upper waters, whereas the reverse was true in the anoxic deep waters (16–20 dpm kg?1 particulate vs. 2–5 dpm kg?1 dissolved). The exact extent of the disequilibrium between210Pb and226Ra is hard to evaluate in the upper oxic layers, because the progressive deepenings resulted in mixing with deep waters. By contrast, one can estimate the residence time of dissolved210Pb in the unperturbed anoxic deepest layers, because these remained isolated, at about 3 years. Following the overturn of 1979, dissolved210Pb exceeded particulate210Pb at all depths. The210Po profiles of the stratified lake resembled in shape those of its grandparent210Pb, but with distinct characteristics of their own in the oxic upper waters where particulate210Po (8–12 dpm kg?1) was greatly in excess over particulate210Pb, while dissolved210Po (25–40 dpm kg?1) was slightly deficient. Immediately following the overturn, dissolved and particulate210Po were similar (about 15 dpm kg?1), at all depths. The destruction of the lake's meromictic structure was accompanied by a reduction of its210Pb inventory, while that of210Po was almost unaffected. Thus, at overturn a transient state was created with the inventory of210Po exceeding that of210Pb.  相似文献

This study shows the assessment of radiation hazard parameters due to terrestrial radionuclides in the soil around artisanal gold mining for addressing the issue of natural radioactivity in mining areas. Hence, the levels 238U, 232Th, 40K and 226Ra in soil (using gamma spectrometry), 222Rn in soil and 222Rn in air were determined. Radiation hazard parameters were then computed. These include absorbed dose D, annual effective dose E, radium equivalent activity Raeq, external hazard Hex, annual gonadal dose equivalent hazard index AGDE and excess lifetime cancer risk ELCR due to the inhalation of radon (222Rn) and consumption of radium (226Ra) in vegetation. Uranium (238U), thorium (232Th) and potassium (40K) averages were, respectively, 26, 36 and 685 Becquerel per kilogram (Bq kg?1). Soil radon (4671 Bq m?3) and radon in air (14.77 Bq m?3) were found to be less than worldwide data. Nevertheless, the average 40K concentration was 685 Bq kg?1. This is slightly higher than the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation average value of 412 Bq kg?1. The obtained result indicates that some of the radiation hazard parameters seem unsavory. The mean value of absorbed dose rate (62.49 nGy h?1) was slightly higher than average value of 57 nGy h?1 (~?45% from 40K), and that of AGDE (444 μSv year?1) was higher than worldwide average reported value (300 μSv year?1). This study highlights the necessity to launch extensive nationwide radiation protection program in the mining areas for regulatory control.  相似文献

The concentrations of radionuclides of the U-Th series (238U,234Th,234U,230Th,226Ra,210Pb,210Po, and232Th,228Ra,228Th) in the water of Narragansett Bay are reported. Analysis of the total, particulate, dissolved and colloidal forms of Th isotopes reveal a consistent removal behavior which is controlled mainly by the particulate matter concentration and the sediment resuspension rate. Half-removal times of Th from solution onto particles range from 1.5 to 15 days, and settling velocities of Th containing particles range generally between 1 and 11 m/day.210Pb and210Po concentrations are seasonally dependent, with higher concentrations and slower removal during the early summer (half-removal times from solution onto particles of 1–5 days in winter and up to 2 months in early summer).  相似文献

Disequilibrium between210Po and210Pb and between210Pb and226Ra has been mapped in the eastern and central Indian Ocean based on stations from Legs 3 and 4 of the GEOSECS Indian Ocean expedition.210Po/210Pb activity ratios are less than 1.0 in the surface mixed layer and indicate a residence time for Po of 0.6 years.210Po and210Pb are generally in radioactive equilibrium elsewhere in the water column except at depths of 100–500 m, where Po may be returned to solution after removal from the surface water, and in samples taken near the bottom at a few stations.210Pb excesses relative to226Ra are observed in the surface water but these excesses are not as pronounced as in the North Pacific and North Atlantic. The difference is attributable to a lower flux of210Pb from the atmosphere to the Indian Ocean. Below the main thermocline,210Pb activities increase with depth to a broad maximum before decreasing to lower values near the bottom. Departures from this pattern are especially evident at stations taken in the Bay of Bengal (where210Pb/226Ra activity ratios as low as 0.16 are observed) and near the Mid-Indian Ridge. The data suggest that removal of210Pb at oceanic boundaries, coupled with eddy diffusion along isopycnals, can explain gradients in210Pb near the boundary. Application of a simple model including isopycnal diffusion, chemical removal, production and radioactive decay produces fits the observed210Pb/226Ra gradients for eddy diffusion coeffients of ~ 107 cm2/s. High productivity in surface waters of the Bay of Bengal makes this region a sink for reactive nuclides in the northern Indian Ocean.  相似文献

In Funka Bay of Hokkaido, Japan, seawater, suspended matter and settling matter were collected once every month in the summer of 1974. These samples were analyzed for234Th, a short-lived daughter of dissolved238U. A pronounced disequilibrium between234Th and238U, and a highly variable concentration of234Th were found. Positive correlation, however, exist among the deficiency of234Th relative to238U in seawater, the concentration of particulate234Th, the fraction of particulate234Th to total234Th in seawater, the total dry weight of suspended matter, and the primary productivity during the month previous to sampling. The specific activity of234Th for the settling particles (620 ± 170 dpm/g) was nearly equal to that for suspended particles (720 ± 600 dpm/g) but much greater than that for plankton (47 ± 24 dpm/g). These facts suggest that suspended particles are somehow closely related to the removal of heavy metals from seawater, in spite of the negligibly small settling flux of suspended matter. The residence time of thorium in Funka Bay (mean depth: 60 m) is found to be about 60 days, which is nearly equal to those of210Pb and210Po.  相似文献

Profiles of226Ra and dissolved210Pb have been measured at several stations in the Red Sea. At one station in the central Red Sea an expanded profile was measured including226Ra and dissolved and particulate210Pb and210Po. These profiles show several distinct features: (1)226Ra displays a mid-depth maximum of about 13 dpm/100 kg at about 500 m; (2) dissolved210Pb concentrations are uniformly low at about 2 dpm/100 kg with little lateral or vertical variation; (3) the surface-water210Pb excess which is commonly observed in low-latitude open ocean regions is entirely lacking; (4)210Pb and210Po activities are essentially identical to each other in both particulate and dissolved phases although210Po activities appear somewhat lower; (5) about 20% of the210Pb and210Po in the water column residues on particulate matter.Assuming the atmospheric210Pb flux to be in the dissolved form and at the lower level of the normal range i.e. 0.5 dpm/cm2 yr, the residence time of the dissolved Pb is about 1.5 years. However, if the same atmospheric flux is entirely in particulate form, then the residence time of the dissolved Pb is about 5 years. The residence time of Pb in the particulate phase is less than 0.4 years if all the Pb is removed only by sinking particles.  相似文献

Polonium‐210 (210Po) is a highly toxic alpha emitter that is rarely found in groundwater at activities exceeding 1 pCi/L. 210Po activities in 63 domestic and public‐supply wells in Lahontan Valley in Churchill County in northern Nevada, United States, ranged from 0.01 ± 0.005 to 178 ± 16 pCi/L with a median activity of 2.88 pCi/L. Wells with high 210Po activities had low dissolved oxygen concentrations (less than 0.1 mg/L) and commonly had pH greater than 9. Lead‐210 activities are low and aqueous 210Po is unsupported by 210Pb, indicating that the 210Po is mobilized from aquifer sediments. The only significant contributors to alpha particle activity in Lahontan Valley groundwater are 234/238U, 222Rn, and 210Po. Radon‐222 activities were below 1000 pCi/L and were uncorrelated with 210Po activity. The only applicable drinking water standard for 210Po in the United States is the adjusted gross alpha radioactivity (GAR) standard of 15 pCi/L. 210Po was not volatile in a Nevada well, but volatile 210Po has been reported in a Florida well. Additional information on the volatility of 210Po is needed because GAR is an inappropriate method to screen for volatile radionuclides. About 25% of the samples had 210Po activities that exceed the level associated with a lifetime total cancer risk of 1× 10?4 (1.1 pCi/L) without exceeding the GAR standard. In cases where the 72‐h GAR exceeds the uranium activity by more than 5 to 10 pCi/L, an analysis to rule out the presence of 210Po may be justified to protect human health even though the maximum contaminant level for adjusted GAR is not exceeded.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to optimize the slow release biostimulant ball (BSB) for bioremediation of contaminated coastal sediment using response surface methodology (RSM). Metals contamination and stabilization of metals in coastal sediments using BSB were investigated. The effects of BSB size (1–5 cm), distance (1–10 cm), and time (1–4 months) on the stabilization of metals including Fe, Cd, Cu, and Pb were determined. The maximum stabilization percentages of Fe, Cd, Cu, and Pb, of 64.5%, 54.9%, 63.8%, and 47.6%, respectively, were observed at a 3 cm ball size, 5.5 cm distance, and a period of 4 months; these values are the optimum conditions for effective treatment of contaminated coastal sediment. The determination coefficient of the R2 value suggests that > 91.55%, 89.97%, 96.10%, and 86.40% of the variance is attributable to the variables of Fe, Cd, Cu, and Pb, respectively.  相似文献

The temporal variability of 210Po and 210Pb was examined in the overlying water of the Zhubi Coral Reef flat to detect nutrient-like behavior of 210Po. Different mechanisms influencing their geochemical behaviors were observed. Excess 210Po relative to 210Pb revealed an additional input of 210Po other than in situ production from 210Pb. The 210Po input comes from the reef flat sediment through diffusion. The diffusion contributes 62% of the total 210Po. This diffusion of 210Po directly highlights its nutrient-like behavior. No input, but the slight removal, of 210Pb was observed. Fractionation factors indicate that particulate matter prefers to adsorb 210Po rather than 210Pb. In combination with particulate composition, 210Po diffusion was closely related to organic matter. These results reveal that 210Po might be a potential tracer for quantifying nutrient recycling in the Coral Reef system.  相似文献

Radionuclide activities (210Pb, 210Bi, 210Po) were investigated in Mount Etna plume from 1983 to 1995. At SE crater the long-term observation (12 years) of the 210Po/210Pb ratio shows that it can behave as a degassing vent not directly related to the main magma reservoir depending on the magma level inside the volcano. Since 1992, the simultaneous determination of radionuclides and sulfur in the main plume results in new constraints on the degassing model of Lambert et al. (Earth Planet. Sci. Lett., 76 (1986) 185). The 210Po/SO2 and 210Pb/SO2 ratios enable us to identify two sources of 210Po in the plume: one is magmatic, correlated with SO2, the other one is an additional component issued from the decay of 210Pb in the shallow degassing cell, and depends directly on the residence time of the gases before their emission. Estimations of the volume of degassing magma, the residence time of the gases and the proportion of undegassed magma renewing the shallow degassing cell are given for the period 1992–1995. During the 1992 eruption, the rate of degassing magma volume is estimated to have been as high as 5×106 m3/day, and the volume of the shallow degassing magma reservoir about 0.5 km3. In 1994 and 1995 the rate of non-erupted degassing magma volume was estimated to have been about 0.18 km3/year. During the entire 1983–1995 period, only 15–20% of the degassed magma was erupted.  相似文献

In earthquake prediction studies, the regional behaviour of accurate 222Rn measurements at a set of sites plays a significant role. Here, measurements are obtained using active and passive radon detector systems in an earthquake-active region of Turkey. Two new methods are proposed to explain the spatial behaviours and the statistical uncertainties in the 222Rn emission measurements along fault lines in relation to earthquake occurrence. The absolute point cumulative semivariogram (APCSV) and perturbation method (PM) help to depict the spatial distribution patterns of 222Rn in addition to the joint effects of the K dr, the radon distribution coefficient, and the perturbation radon distribution coefficient (PRDC). The K dr coefficient assists in identifying the spatial distributional behaviour in 222Rn concentrations and their migration along the Earth’s surface layers. The PRDC considers not only the arithmetic averages but also the variances (or standard deviations) and the correlation coefficients, in addition to the size of the error among the 222Rn measurements. The applications of these methodologies are performed for 13,000 222Rn measurements that are deemed to be sufficient for the characterization of tectonics in the Keban Reservoir along the East Anatolian Fault System (EAFS) in Turkey. The results are evaluated for the ?çme earthquake (M L 5.4, 5.7 km, 23 June 2011), which occurred in the vicinity of the EAFS.  相似文献

By modelling the observed distribution of210Pb and210Po in surface waters of the Pacific, residence times relative to particulate removal are determined. For the center of the North Pacific gyre these are τPo = 0.6years andτPb = 1.7years. The surface ocean τPb is determined by particulate transport rather than plankton settling. The fact that it is about two orders of magnitude smaller than τPb for the deep ocean implies a sharp change in the adsorptive quality of particles during descent through the water column.  相似文献

Abstract Geochemical and Sr–Nd–Pb isotope characteristics, as well as K–Ar geochronology of a massive pitchstone (volcanic glass) stock erupted into Late Cretaceous lapilli tuff and rhyolite in the Gohado area, southwestern Okcheon Belt, South Korea, are reported. The pitchstones are highly evolved with SiO2 contents ranging from ~72 to 73 wt%, K2O/Na2O ratios of 1.04–1.23 and low MgO/FeOt values (0.17–0.20). The pitchstones are weakly peraluminous and the ASI (molar Al2O3/Na2O + K2O + CaO) values are significantly lower than 1.1. The pitchstones also display a general calc‐alkaline nature with significant alkali contents. The rare earth elements (REE) compositions show moderately fractionated nature with (La/Yb)N ranging from 11 to 16. Chondrite normalized REE patterns show relative enrichment of light REE over heavy REE and moderate Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* ratio varies from 0.53 to 0.57). A distinct negative Nb anomaly is observed for all pitchstones on a primitive mantle normalized trace element diagram, typical of subduction‐related magmatism and crustal‐derived granites. All these features are characteristic of I‐type granites derived from a continental arc. The pitchstones have Zr contents of 98.5–103.5 ppm with zircon thermometry yielding temperatures of 749–755°C (mean 752°C). The K–Ar analyses of representative pitchstone samples yielded ages of 58.7 ± 2.3 and 62.4 ± 2.1 Ma with a mean age of 61 Ma. The rocks show nearly uniform initial 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios of 0.7104–0.7106 and identical 143Nd/144Nd initial ratio of 0.5120. The rocks display negative εNd (61 Ma) values of ?12. The depleted mantle model ages (TDM) range from 1.54 Ga to 1.57 Ga. The Pb isotope ratios are 206Pb/204Pb = 18.522–18.552, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.642–15.680 and 208Pb/204Pb = 38.794–38.923. These ratios suggest that the Gohado pitchstones were formed in a continental arc environment by partial melting of a 1.54 Ga to 1.57 Ga parental sources of lower crustal rocks probably of mafic or intermediate compositions.  相似文献

Mussels from the Portuguese coast collected during several seasons of the year have shown 210Po and 210Pb body burdens (Bq mussel−1) that increased with mussels’ body size but displayed significant decrease in radionuclide concentrations (Bq kg−1). For example, the increase of mussel size from 2.5 cm to 5.0 cm maximum shell length corresponded in average to a 50% decrease of 210Po activity concentration in soft tissues from 1065 Bq kg−1 (dw) to 540 Bq kg−1 (dw). A similar reduction in concentration was observed for 210Pb. The physiological condition of mussels, relating to fat and glycogen storage, had an effect on radionuclide concentrations, although the total body burden of radionuclide in mussels remained nearly constant throughout the year. These factors may play an important role in data interpretation for environmental monitoring programmes. Besides the mussel size and condition index, due to the inter-individual variation even inside narrow mussel size classes, the sample size, i.e., the number of specimens in one mussel sample is another key factor to be considered when obtaining environmentally representative radionuclide concentrations.  相似文献
