Abstract

Large volumes of groundwater are contained in the deep intermontane valleys of Basin and Range regions. Determining the shape and storage capacity of these basins by drilling can be expensive and difficult because of the depth of alluvium and large areas involved. These difficulties can often be overcome by combining gravimetric and seismic refraction interpretations. The basin boundaries are determined by gravimetric methods, with bulk density samples taken of all representative formations. Density values can then be correlated with seismic velocities to estimate subsurface porosities. Studies indicate that seismic velocity varies inversely with porosity for the alluvial deposits. These values can be correlated with their respective formations in the basin from geologic sections derived from the seismic refraction survey. Thus, with volume and porosity of the alluvium known, storage capacity (both present and potential) can be computed.  相似文献

Buried Pleistocene subglacial valleys are extensively used as groundwater reservoirs by waterworks in northern Germany, although little is known about the locations and size of these valleys and the internal structure of the sediment fill. This lack of knowledge about important groundwater reservoirs is a challenge for geophysics.This paper summarizes the geophysical investigation of two buried Pleistocene subglacial valleys in northern Germany—the Ellerbeker Rinne and the Bremerhaven–Cuxhavener Rinne—including seismic, gravity, and airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys. Seismic sections show the detailed structure of the paleovalleys. The reliability of interpretation is enhanced by vertical seismic profiles in wells. The maximum depths of the Ellerbeker Rinne and the Bremerhaven–Cuxhavener Rinne were found to be 360 and about 400 m, respectively. Gravity survey revealed Bouguer anomalies above the sediment fill of both buried valleys. The Ellerbeker Rinne produces a negative residual anomaly of −0.5 mGal, whereas the sediments of the Bremerhaven–Cuxhavener Rinne produce a positive anomaly. The latter one is superimposed by negative gravity anomalies due to near-surface structures. The Bremerhaven–Cuxhavener Rinne can be mapped by airborne electromagnetics at locations without saltwater intrusion, which would affect the measurements. The electrical conductivity of the clay layer at the top of the valley fill differs significantly from that of the surrounding sand. The combined use of these three geophysical methods, which measure different physical parameters, leads to a better understanding of the subsurface geology and the hydrogeology of the Pleistocene subglacial valleys.  相似文献

白龙江流域构造活动频繁,是本区自然灾害频发的重要控制因素之一.众多学者对该区域的构造运动及影响进行了大量研究,但针对本区隐伏活断层勘查的例子较少.针对白龙江流域隐伏活断层,笔者通过高密度电法、地震反射法、地震折射层析法三种手段进行有效组合勘查,形成了一套行之有效的、适用于白龙江流域隐伏活断层勘查的综合物探方法,该方法不仅查明了断层的性质,还证实了断层的活动性.分别以含水断层与非含水断层两种类型进行举例说明,两者的地球物理特征既有相似点也有区别,所提出的综合物探技术对这两类断层均有较好的勘查效果,可以广泛应用于白龙江流域隐伏活断层的勘查工作,对其他地区的勘查也有一定的借鉴意义.  相似文献

本文介绍浅层地震折射波法勘探的Hagiwara方法和将其应用于辽宁省海城市西荒地热水区隐伏花岗岩体分布特征的探测结果。结果表明,该项工作效率高,勘探效果好,花岗岩体的勘探深度与钻井资料极其一致。由此作者认为,在地震勘探中,折射波方法对查明工程场地沉积覆盖层的厚度和结晶基底的研究是十分有效的  相似文献

In northern Chile, which is part of the Atacama Desert, groundwater supply and storage are controlled by deep structural phenomena. Several geophysical exploration techniques were used to determine the structure and depth of the basement of a broad valley filled with unconsolidated alluvial deposits. The gravity method was applied to obtain a general picture of the basement. This was followed by seismic refraction measurements along two traverse lines which appeared to be of major interest. Additional experiments with the magnetic and the telluric methods supplemented the geophysical investigations. In this paper the results of the different geophysical methods are presented, compared, and evaluated with respect to the usefulness in arid regions. It is concluded that a complementary use of the gravity method and the seismic refraction method is a very fruitful and efficient approach for the geophysical reconnaissance of water-bearing basins in flat and arid zones like the Atacama Desert.  相似文献

Refraction seismic and gravity investigations were executed to solve geological and hydrographical problems in recent strata: These loose sediments necessitated a special arrangement for the energy source in the seismic measurements, By the use of a falling weight the refracted wave could be registered from a depth of more than 30 m. Quaternary fluviatile sands are characterized by lower velocities than the Tertiary sediments. Even a marked velocity difference between different Tertiary formations could be observed. Sand-filled valleys in Tertiary clays give relatively important variations in the gravity field caused by the small differences of densities. Thus buried channels in a clay subsoil can be found by accurate gravity measurements.  相似文献

在城市活断层探测中 ,浅层结构常常表现为强烈的非均匀性 ,界面横向强烈起伏 ,层内速度变化较大 ,传统的基于平界面均匀层模型的折射资料处理方法不能适用。研究开发能应用于复杂介质结构中折射资料处理的方法就显得十分必要。文中基于惠更斯原理 ,用波前扩张法对波场作正演计算 ,根据哈格多恩折射波前成像原理 ,在lecomte算法和Hole有限差分计算程序的基础上 ,开发出 1种复杂介质结构中折射资料的处理方法与软件 ,并用此方法处理了福州城市活断层折射探测试验中在义序完成的 2条折射剖面资料。结果表明 :探测区浅层为 3层结构 ,分别为盖层、强风化层和基岩。基岩顶界面的埋深约为 5 8~ 5 2m ,盖层P波速度变化较大  相似文献

Buried Quaternary valleys in Denmark are complex structures filled with various deposits consisting primarily of glacio-lacustrine clay, till and meltwater sand, and gravel. The valleys are important geophysical targets, because they often contain significant volumes of groundwater used for public water supply. About 700 km of buried valley structures have been imaged in the western part of Denmark by the transient electromagnetic (TEM) method. The ability to map the valleys depends primarily on valley geometry, infill architecture and the resistivity of the fill sediments as well as the substratum. One-dimensional (1-D) inversion models of the TEM soundings have been used to construct contour maps of 20 m average resistivities and depth to a good conductor, which provide images for geological interpretation. Images of buried valley morphology, fill properties, infill architecture, such as cut-and-fill structures, valley distribution and valley generations, are characterized for case studies from Hornsyld, Holstebro and the Vonsild/Agtrup areas of Denmark.  相似文献

In the Andes mountains of North Chile seismic refraction measurements revealed the existence of a buried graben structure. The special geological environment permitted the deduction, by detailed analyses of diffraction patterns and delayed arrival times, of a low velocity layer underneath a high velocity ignimbritic sheet. The gravity method was chosen as an economic secondary aid to trace the course of the buried structure. This unusual combination of detailed gravity measurements following a general seismic survey was not only successful in detecting and tracing a buried structure, but also provided complementary data about the deeper subsurface conditions.  相似文献

In recent years, geophysical methods (shallow seismic, electromagnetic, resistivity, ground penetrating radar) have been increasingly applied to overburden investigations. Their effectiveness has been found to depend significantly on local geological conditions. Compared with advanced seismic techniques, EM methods are faster and hence more cost-effective, but they have not been considered sufficiently accurate. Analysis is carried out of data obtained with the multifrequency horizontal-loop method (HLEM) in northeastern Ontario, where the overburden consists of Quaternary glacial and glaciolacustrine sediments. Surveying along 1-6 km long profiles permitted recognition of bedrock inhomogeneities and selection of sites suitable for HLEM data interpretation using the layered model. Phasor diagrams and computer inversion based on the ridge regression technique were used to interpret HLEM soundings obtained at eight frequencies. Interpreted layer resistivities and thicknesses were correlated with the results of Rotasonic drilling at 70 sites. Relatively accurate estimates of overburden thickness (within 10%) could be obtained in about 80% of the cases. Nine examples of HLEM soundings are given and discussed: three each of one-, two- and three-layer situations. An appropriate interpretation model cannot be selected simply by minimizing the rms error or by analysing the parameter resolution matrix. Frequently, the most effective way of evaluating a solution is to consider whether resistivity values determined by inversion fit any of the ranges determined by statistical analyses of sediment resistivities. A previously published study of electrical properties of Quaternary sediments indicated that resistivities of clay, till and sand are stable within a fairly large area, such as the one under investigation. While the application of HLEM methods to mapping of Quaternary sediments can be considered a success, interpretation of EM data in regions covered by glacial sediments is more difficult than in weathered terrains, where near-surface layering is more predictable. The problem of equivalence causes non-uniqueness in interpretation. Thickness equivalence, which results in poor resistivity estimates, was found to affect areas convered by sand and till. Conductance equivalence caused poor resolution of thickness and resistivity for thin clay layers (less than 10 m).  相似文献

Organic solvent (i.e., dense nonaqueous phase liquid, DNAPL) migration in the subsurface is known to be extremely sensitive to geologic heterogeneity. There is often a focus on heterogeneity that results from changing depositional conditions over short spatial scales. Similar or even more extreme spatial heterogeneity can result postdeposition due to erosional processes. This study applies a synergistic approach based on a combination of high‐resolution lithologic logs of continuous cores, borehole geophysical logs, surface electrical resistivity, and seismic refraction tomography models to assess spatial heterogeneity in a shallow bedrock sequence subject to multiple unconformities and contaminated with a mixture of organic chemicals. The persistence of DNAPL in the source zone and an associated dissolved‐phase plume led to variable impacts on formation resistivity across the study site. Seismic refraction in combination with electrical resistivity tomography improved interpretation of highly irregular erosional boundaries by delineating sharp lateral transitions in lithologic composition near the source zone and across the dissolved‐phase plume. Electrical resistivity was effective at differentiating between clean and mud‐rich sandstones and their unconformable contact with an underlying dolostone. Geophysical measurements revealed eroded dolostone mounds encased by a network of younger mud‐rich sandstones channelized by clean semi‐lithified sand, all of which was buried beneath variable glacial drift. Our synergistic multidimensional approach resulted in the development of a detailed three‐dimensional shallow bedrock geospatial model, which has led to an improved understanding of DNAPL migration and contaminant plume heterogeneity.  相似文献

浅层人工地震勘探是探查城市隐伏活动断层最有效的手段之一,然而受近地表探测盲区和探测分辨率的限制,该方法难以获取活动断层超浅层上断点的准确埋深位置。地质雷达探测方法在一定程度上可弥补浅层人工地震勘探的不足。为探索浅层人工地震勘探和地质雷达探测的联合应用效果,分析其在城市隐伏活动断层探测中的应用潜力,选取河南省鹤壁市汤东断裂西支为研究对象,并在冯屯村和前交卸村分别开展联合探测,获取高信噪比的浅层人工地震反射剖面和地质雷达剖面。浅层人工地震勘探揭示的冯屯村处汤东断裂西支上断点埋深为60~70 m,地质雷达探测揭示的上断点埋深约为2.5 m,结合平均沉积速率推测汤东断裂西支在冯屯村的最新活动时代约为25 ka。浅层人工地震勘探揭示的前交卸村处汤东断裂西支上断点埋深为50~60 m,地质雷达探测揭示出汤东断裂西支在前交卸村处未造成近地表约10 m以内的地层断错。研究结果表明,在城市隐伏活动断层探测中,采用浅层人工地震勘探和地质雷达探测相结合的方法,不但可有效确定活动断层的位置,且可进一步约束活动断层上断点的准确埋深,有利于指导后期地震地质勘探中的探槽和钻孔布设。  相似文献

用地震方法探测城市直下型活动断裂是一种不可替代的勘探技术。地震方法能够准确确定断层的位置,但对于断层的地质年代问题,地震方法本身难以解决,然而结合钻孔资料和测区标准地质剖面,根据地震深度剖面,可以定性地(或半定量地)确定反射波组的地质年代。确定城市直下型活动断裂的上断点需要采用高分辨率的地震反射技术,为有效地确定深部断裂的几何特征,特别是确定深浅断裂构造之间的关系,反射地震方法优于折射地震方法。  相似文献

Seven villages in southeastern Kenya surround Mt. Kasigau and depend on the mountain's cloud forest for their water supply. Five of these villages have regularly experienced water shortages, and all village water supplies were contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria. There is a need to economically find new sources of fresh ground water. Remote sensing offers a relatively quick and cost-effective way of identifying areas with high potential for ground water development. This study used spectral properties of features on Landsat remote sensing imagery to map linear features, soil types, surface moisture, and vegetation. Linear features represented geologic or geomorphologic features indicating either shallow ground water or areas of increased subsurface hydraulic conductivity. Regarding soil type, black soils were identified as potential indicators of shallow aquifers based on their relatively lower elevation and association with river valleys. A vegetation map was created using unsupervised classification, and three of the resulting vegetation classes were observed to be commonly associated with wet areas and/or ground water discharge. A wetness map, created using tasseled cap analysis, was used to identify all areas of high ground moisture, including those that corresponded to vegetated areas. The linear features, soil type, vegetation, and wetness maps were overlaid to produce a composite that highlighted areas with the highest potential for ground water development. Electrical resistivity surveys confirmed that areas highlighted by the composite image had relatively shallow depths to the water table. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) has been used to experimentally detect shallow buried faults in urban areas in the past a few years, with some progress and experience obtained. According to the results from Olympic Park, Beijing, Shandong Province, Gansu Province and Shanxi Province, we have generalized the method and procedure for inferring the discontinuity of electrical structures (DES) indicating a buried fault in urban areas from resistivity tomograms and its typical electrical features. In general, the layered feature of the electrical structure is first analyzed to preliminarily define whether or not a DES exists in the target area. Resistivity contours in resistivity tomograms are then analyzed from the deep to the shallow. If they extend upward from the deep to the shallow and shape into an integral dislocation, sharp flexure (convergence) or gradient zone, it is inferred that the DES exists, indicating a buried fault. Finally, horizontal tracing is be carried out to define the trend of the DES. The DES can be divided into three types-type AB, ABA and AC. In the present paper, the Zhangdian-Renhe fault system in Zibo city is used as an example to illustrate how to use the method to infer the location and spatial extension of a target fault. Geologic drilling holes are placed based on our research results, and the drilling logs testify that our results are correct. However, the method of this paper is not exclusive and inflexible. It is expected to provide reference and assistance for inferring the shallow buried faults in urban areas from resistivity tomograms in the future.  相似文献

Lake shapes and their spatial distribution are important geomorphological indicators in previously glaciated areas. Their shapes are influenced by the underlying geological structure and processes of glacial sediment deposition or erosion. Since these processes act on large areas, distribution of lakes can reflect the intensity of glacial erosional/depositional processes and their spatial extent. Landsat imagery was used to extract lake outlines from a selected pilot‐study area on the widest ice‐free coastal margin of the south‐western Greenland north of Kangerlussuaq. Analysis included image classification and spatial analysis of lakes with elevation data using geographic information system (GIS) tools. A morphometric index was applied to extract kettle lakes as indicators of a specific glacial process – ice stagnation. Analysis of their spatial distribution helped in the reconstruction of glacial dynamics in formerly glaciated terrain. Our results show that spatial lake distribution combined with elevation analysis can be used to identify zones of glacial erosion and deposition. The highest concentrations of lakes within the study area occupy the elevation range between 164 and 361 m above sea level (a.s.l.). This zone can be identified as an area where intensive glacial erosion took place in the past. The widespread distribution of modeled kettle lake features within the same elevation range and across the study area suggests that the last deglaciation process was accompanied by abandonment of blocks of stagnant ice. 2001~2003年为奥运工程规划、建设开展了对北京奥林匹克公园区域中黄庄-高丽营断裂的探测,本项工作另一探索性任务是为随后即将在全国开展的城市地区隐伏断裂探测工作摸索有效方法、积累经验.本次探测先采用电阻率层析成像和浅层地震勘探方法进行断裂定位,再钻探进行断裂准确定位并探测断裂结构和地层结构,结合对所采集样品进行的14C、红外释光、古地磁、孢粉等多种测年方法进行地层年代划分.通过多种方法并行对比、验证、综合分析,以多方面综合性大量研究工作明确给出了断裂位置、结构、活动性,认为本段断裂最新活动时代为早更新世(非地震活断层).根据实践经验探讨了城市地区隐伏断裂探测的有效方法.  相似文献

结合地质和遥感图像解译资料,以物探方法查找活断层是行之有效的方法。针对单一的物探方法在反演解释中具有多解性的弊端,本文提出以高密度电阻率法为主,浅层地震反射波法为辅的综合物探勘察组合模式。经实际钻探证明,这种综合物探模式对隐伏活断层的勘察是完全可行的,并具有较强的实用推广性。  相似文献
