Landslides in blanket peat on Cuilcagh Mountain, northwest Ireland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The northern and eastern sides of the Cuilcagh Mountain upland, in northwest Ireland, are mantled with over 50 km2 of blanket bog that has experienced an unusually high spatial and temporal frequency of peat mass movements. In all, 29 peaty-debris slides, nine bog slides, two peat slides and five more peat landslides of uncertain type have been recorded within this study area. More than 27 km2 of this peatland has been afforded several levels of statutory protection as well as international recognition of its geo-environmental importance. Field and laboratory investigations of the peat at several of the more recent failure sites showed it to be typical of Irish and Pennine (northern England) blanket bogs in most physical and hydrological respects. Field geomorphological evidence and modelling of stability thresholds indicate that the particular susceptibility of the Cuilcagh Mountain blanket bog to failure arises from two local factors: (i) the attainment of threshold maximum peat depths on the East Cuilcagh plateau, and (ii) the unconformable deposition of thin layers of glacial till (in places) and blanket peat over the pre-existing topographic surface formed from the major shale formations that underlie the northern slopes. With two exceptions, there is no conclusive evidence that human activities and management strategies for the area have had any significant influence on the occurrence of the peat landslides. The high frequency of large rainfall events since 1961 that did not trigger landslides suggests that failures are unlikely to become more frequent in response to climate change effects because they are controlled by slowly changing internal thresholds.  相似文献

The suitability of a south Pennine reservoir as an archive of recent industrial pollution (Pb deposition) and vegetation change was assessed by comparing the sediment record of Pb and pollen with a local blanket peat profile, and the modelled regional SO2 deposition since 1840. The pollen-based record of vegetation change from the reservoir sediments was obscured by high inputs of eroded peat from the surrounding catchment. Total fluxes of Pb from the catchment into the reservoir varied between 0.05 and 2.67 kg km−2 year−1 during a 7 year period of increased peat erosion (1976–1984). The presence of concentration peaks in the Pb profile of the blanket peat may have been caused by changes in sulphide or redox chemistry within the peat profile. Large variations in influxes of Pb to the reservoir occurred during periods of increased peat erosion, suggesting the record of aerial pollution deposition has been obscured by terrestrial inputs. Extensive areas of blanket peat in the south Pennines have been subject to denudation, suggesting reservoirs in the region and other areas of high erosion and sediment flux are unsuitable for producing accurate records of the aerial deposition of pollen rain and Pb pollution. The ecological implications of highly variable fluxes of heavy metal contaminants from extensively eroded blanket bogs to ecosystems downstream are poorly understood.  相似文献

Reducing solid fuel use for home heating can reduce both carbon emissions and air pollution within residential areas and thereby provide for improved environmental and health outcomes. The general models used to identify the determinants of solid fuel use often focus upon socioeconomic factors. Utilising an extended spatial econometric approach our results show proximity to a solid fuel resource as the most significant factor. Other spatially evaluated attributes, such as temperature, legislated solid-fuel sale restrictions and gas network coverage, are also found to have significant impacts on solid fuel use choices. Clear spatial dependence patterns are found for the effects of these attributes, with further evidence of large spill-over effects for neighbouring areas in the case of proximity to either a peat bog or an area subject to a ban on the sale of smoky coal. The research engages a blend of GIS and spatial econometric analysis to generate maps for both a fuel poverty risk and a resistance to fuel change index. These outcomes can serve to inform the design and deployment of effective and equitable solid-fuel and environmental policy interventions. Suggested policy interventions include conservation of peat bogs, expansion of smoky coal ban areas and the development of gas network coverage to specific areas. In addition to the policy support outcomes, the paper offers technical and methodological innovations in relation to combining spatial attributes with econometric models, handling large spatial matrices, understanding direct and indirect effects, and visibly presenting estimated values with spatial dependence.  相似文献

Analysis of the retail structure in three local government areas in southern Sydney revealed many changes over the period 1969–1989: the number of establishments grew by more than 20 per cent despite a significant population decline; there was considerable evidence of the suburbanisation of the professions; and the composition of shopping centres reflected changing suburban lifestyles, notably as regards an increased concern for eating out, fitness and health, and personal services. Over time, the hierarchy of shopping centres became less clear‐cut and more attenuated. The geographical pattern of growth and decline suggests that the retail structure of the area is becoming increasingly complex.  相似文献

土地沙漠化是在干旱、半干旱地区,由于特定的自然条件和人类不合理地利用自然资源,所引起的环境退化过程。随着这个过程的进一步发展对人类的不利影响越来越大。因此,对土地沙漠化的问题,也越来越得到人们的普遍重视。在内蒙伊克昭盟及宁夏、陕北地区,沙漠化的土地面积,分别占总土地面积的32%、25.2%和45.9%。这说明了在上述地区土地沙漠化是相当严重的。造成土地沙漠化的自然因素,除气候的干旱、多风外,地表物质的组成是其物质基础。而地表物质组成与沉积条件密切相关,因此,不同的沉积环境形成不同的沉积物,其质地性质差异很大。这些不同的沉积物,对土地沙漠化的发生及发展速度、类型和治理措施都有直接关系。因此,研究地表物质组成与土地沙漠化之间的关系是极为重要。  相似文献

This paper examines spatial and temporal patterns of large to medium‐sized fires across the Indonesian Archipelago using remote sensing, particularly the MODIS fire products, over a 14 years period (2000–13 inclusive) in conjunction with climatic and land data in a GIS. Results showed fires (burned area and number of fires) were detected the most in year 2002 and least in 2010. The extent of burning was correlated with the annual Southern Oscillation Index with most burning occurring during times of sustained negative SOI values, which generally means drier conditions across the region. Most of the detected fires occurred in the middle of the dry season and in drier eastern Indonesia. Across Indonesia, approximately 1.5 per cent of available open vegetation area burned, whereas only 0.5 per cent of forest area burned. Most open vegetation burning was detected in the savanna with an area equivalent to 11.1 per cent of its extent being burned over the 14 years. On Sumba Island, where the pronounced dry season extends for at least four months, open vegetation is the most common land cover type, of which 99 per cent burned by area over the study period making it the island with the most burned areas in the Indonesian Archipelago.  相似文献

CLIMATE ENVELOPES OF MIRE COMPLEX TYPES IN FENNOSCANDIA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Peatlands are characteristic features of the Fennoscandian landscape, about one‐quarter of the land surface being classified as peatland. The aim of this work was to determine the extent to which the distribution of four main mire complex types (aapa mire, blanket bog, palsa mire, raised bog) can be modelled on the basis of climatological parameters. Additionally, the relative importance of different climatological variables in influencing the distribution of different mire complex types was scrutinized using the variation partitioning method. Variation partitioning is a novel statistical approach that provides deeper understanding of the importance of different explanatory variable groups for geographical patterns than traditional regression methods. The variation in the distribution of mire complex types was decomposed into independent and joint effects of temperature, precipitation and spatial variables. The distributional limits of aapa mires, palsa mires and raised bogs were primarily associated with thermal factors, whereas moisture regime also played an obvious role for blanket bogs. A considerable amount of variation in the distribution of mire complex types was accounted for by the joint effects of explanatory variables and may thus be causally related to two or all three groups of variables. Although the present distribution of mire complex types corresponded well to the contemporary climate in Fennoscandia, our results indicate that the climate envelopes of palsa mires are narrow. Thus, they can be expected to be extremely sensitive to changes in future climatic conditions.  相似文献

This paper presents new data on the rate and patterns of loss of tropical moist forest cover to agriculture in Cross River State, Nigeria. Data from sequential aerial photographs and field surveys are used to derive an estimate of forest loss of 0.6 per cent per year. This rate is relatively modest, yet current conservation and forestry policy in the area is based on assumptions of rapid conversion of forest. The implications of these findings for debates about conservation and policy are discussed.  相似文献

以北方土石山区27个小流域样本数据为基础,针对流域粮食生产、经济发展和生态保护对土地的需求,构建了土地压力定量评估方法,评估了各流域的土地压力,并将其与实际土地生产力进行了比较,进而从各小流域的经验事实中提取出使两者平衡的有效途径。结果表明,土地压力在空间上具有非均衡性,但相对于土地生产力的相对土地压力则存在空间均衡化的趋势。2000年前后,只有76%的样本小流域能够支撑人均300 kg/a的粮食生产压力,只有约20%的样本小流域能够支撑其经济发展压力,但这些小流域的土地压力最终都得到了有效缓解。劳动力转移、发展经济林果和特色产业等是缓解上述压力的主要途径。  相似文献

Conservation planning and resulting ecological target identification require selection of both a planning area boundary and temporal baseline or reference condition. We examined the effects that these selections can have on resulting amount and location of identified conservation targets. A gap analysis for California was conducted using five different sets of ecoregion boundaries to identify and compare existing conservation shortfalls in major land cover type representation in protected areas using a threshold of 30 percent per ecoregion per type as the minimum required for future ecological viability. Another gap analysis was run for a single ecoregion using two temporal baselines (current and pre-1900) for the land cover followed by a comparison of identified conservation needs. We found that the boundaries of different ecoregional schemes affected both the total area needed to meet the per ecoregion land cover conservation goals and the spatial location of underprotected land cover types. Choice of temporal baseline also had a significant effect on the establishment of conservation targets for the highly human-impacted Central Valley ecoregion. To meet the given conservation threshold using a historic rather than contemporary baseline, a substantial amount of restoration is required. The results can help identify areas of both conservation needs consensus and those that vary widely based on the chosen planning boundary, as well as aid in the selection of appropriate restoration targets in degraded ecosystems. Because all landscapes are continuous in nature and planning area boundaries are discrete, similar results are likely to be found in analyses conducted in other regions.  相似文献

Wetlands are important environmental resources for rural livelihoods in Ethiopia. The study investigated spatiotemporal change of wetlands, drivers and effects in North Central Ethiopian Highlands. Landsat satellite imageries of 1984, 1993, 2000, and 2013 were used to analyse wetland changes over the last three decades. Practical observations, interviews and discussions with local communities and officers were also conducted to address the main objective. Furthermore, secondary data on crop yields were collected to supplement the primary data. The study shows that wetlands have been converted into built‐up areas and farmlands. Wetlands in the study area experienced annual loss across the entire study period. Consequently, the area size of wetlands decreased from 7.4 per cent in 1984 to 2.6 per cent in 2013. About 66 per cent of the total wetlands was lost within 30 years mainly due to farmland encroachment and urban expansions. The highest rate of wetland change was recorded between 2000 and 2013. Such wetland changes increased conflicts among land users. However, the converted wetlands increased short‐term benefits due to wetland recession agriculture. To conclude, wetland resources are under enormous threats, and challenge the sustainability of livelihoods. Thus, integrated and adaptive wetland restoration policies could improve the degraded wetlands.  相似文献

Past studies of the climatic influence on tree growth at peat bogs in northern latitudes have shown weak correlation between annual tree-ring widths and climatic parameters during the growing season. At Hanvedsmossen, a raised peat bog in south central Sweden, tree-ring width chronologies from one drained and one undrained growth site, as well as one dry site outside the bog, were compared to meteorological records. Low temperatures, which means less evaporation, as well as high precipitation appear to be inhibiting pine growth at the undisturbed bog site as the trees are sensitive to changes in the local water table. Drainage causes an instant increase in annual tree growth for approximately 10 years. If draining is maintained, the response to climate of the pines resembles that of pines growing on mineral soils. The variance in annual tree-ring growth explained by temperature/precipitation or both was low for the entire lengths of all chronologies, but high for some analysed subperiods; the significant months changed with time. The reason for this seems to be that pines at Hanvedsmossen are growing in a region where precipitation and temperature are less limiting to tree growth than at higher and lower latitudes.  相似文献

The Nord region of northern France, comprising the départements of the Nord and the Pas-de-Calais, epitomises the economic and social problems endured by many areas of the developed world which underwent rapid industrial growth and urbanisation in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but have experienced economic contraction and social depression since 1950. In 1968 the Nord region contained 3.8 million inhabitants (7.6 per cent of the French population) on 12,000 km2 (2.3 per cent of the national area) at an average density of 308 persons/km2, by comparison with the national average of 91/km2 (Roques 1969, p. 7). Eighty-one per cent of the regional population lived in urban areas, by contrast with 67 per cent nationally.  相似文献

Sand mining is a type of open-cast mining that provides material for the construction sector in Ghana. The construction sector in the coastal areas of Ghana relies heavily on coastal sand and pebbles in the building of houses, bridges and roads. Its contribution to Ghana's industrial output has increased from 17.4 per cent in 1986 to 20.8 per cent in 1993. However, the process of sand mining has accelerated coastal environmental degradation to an alarming rate in many areas. As a result the government has been compelled to spend millions of dollars to combat sea erosion. This paper examines the causes and effects of coastal sand mining in three communities in the Ahanta West District of Ghana. It argues that coastal sand needs to be exploited to satisfy human demands but this requires efficient and effective resource management to ensure sustainable development. It also calls for a concerted effort by policy makers, sand contractors, engineers, traditional rulers and local residents to find a solution to the coastal environmental crisis.  相似文献

This study evaluates the dynamics and identifies the indirect biophysical and socio‐economic factors related to the recovery, degradation and deforestation of the tropical dry forest (TDF) cover in the municipality of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Annual rates and transition matrices were determined to identify indirect factors; the cartographic information of 25 variables with shift points were overlaid and Generalized Linear Models (GLM) were applied. The change process with the greatest impact in TDF during the study period (1993–2011) was degradation, with 10468 ha degraded (12 per cent of the initial tropical cover); recovery of coverage was the second most important change process, with 4808 ha (5.5 per cent); and deforestation was the change process with the lowest impact, with a loss of 2800 ha (3.23 per cent). The net balance was negative, with a decrease (through land degradation and deforestation) of 8460 ha (9.75 per cent). The recovery of coverage was mainly associated with biophysical factors such as land suitability and accessibility to natural vegetation. On the other hand, deforestation and degradation of coverage were associated with both biophysical and socioeconomic factors such as land suitability, accessibility to natural vegetation, migration, marginalization, population pressure, economy, education and health. The findings of this study determined the spatial distribution of forest recovery, deforestation and degradation processes at a regional level, allowing for future researchers to focus their efforts at local and landscape levels. Also, the work allows for an approximation of the factors associated with the change processes studied, hence supporting the allocation of resources for the establishment of management, conservation, development and restoration strategies of tropical dry forests at the regional level.  相似文献

Five wooden trackways in raised bogs located along a precipitation gradient in Northwest Europe (Ireland, England, The Netherlands and Germany), and all dated toc. 2600 cal.BC, show differences in building method related to variable hydrological conditions in the local bog surfaces. Differences in the bearing strength of the highly humified hummock-hollow surfaces can be largely attributed to differences in the climatically related water content of the peat. Water balance studies, based on current climatic data and using the concept of system-linked discharge, can explain the hydrological differences between the ombrotrophic bogs established by archaeological excavations of the wooden trackways. Active peat growth at the time of construction and building methods used indicate mean annual precipitation values similar to present reflecting the modern rainfall gradient.This publication is the fourth paper in a series of papers presented at the session on Past Climatic Change and the Development of Peatlands at the ASLO and SWS Meetings in Edmonton, Canada, May 30–June 3, 1993. 以长白山区泥炭沼泽为研究对象,沿不同海拔选择赤池、锦北、大牛沟、金川和哈尔巴岭5个代表性采样点。通过对沼泽垂直剖面的精细采样,利用210Pb和137Cs方法对5个剖面进行高精度定年,综合研究和分析泥炭沉积物质量磁化率沿深度垂直分布特征,进而揭示其环境意义。结果表明,长白山区泥炭沼泽磁化率在表层具有明显的富集规律,富集时间始于20世纪初,并在20世纪后期达到峰值,且其富集含量可达以下层位富集平均值的5~10倍;长白山区泥炭磁化率的表聚性特征反映了在盛行西风等自然因素作用下,大气降尘和城市扩张等多种人类活动对区域环境的影响,很好地指示了区域磁性颗粒物污染扩大和加剧趋势。  相似文献

The biophysical environment of rangelands in the arid and semi-arid lowland parts of Africa is customarily viewed as a homogenous entity. Such notion has encouraged employing a blanket management approach. However, there are perceptible variations within them which necessitate site-specific range management. This study has attempted to identify the variability of soil and forage attributes and assess the existing management practices of those resources in the Baro River plain, Ethiopia. Sample transects, representing pre- and post-fire conditions, were used to collect composite soil samples and vegetation attributes. Alongside the physical survey, a household survey was undertaken to validate the laboratory-generated information. The result showed significant differences of soil and forage attributes among different management regimes, distances from river course and dominant cover types. In general, the distribution of soil nutrients showed a 'distance decay effect', while the distribution of pH showed the reverse pattern. Application of heavy fire load and congested grazing are the principal range management related factors. About 80 per cent of sample pastoralists employ heavy fire without due consideration for the sustainability of the range resource and without considering the local variability. Recognition of site-specific information is the key to effective management of range resources in the study area.  相似文献
