The importance of glacigenic dust in the Earth's system during glacial periods is widely acknowledged. Under contemporary conditions, the world's largest dust sources are in low‐lying, hot, arid regions and this is where most aeolian research is focused. However the processes of dust production and emissions are still operating in cold climate regions, particularly in proglacial areas. This paper assesses current understanding of the relationship between glacierised landscapes and dust emissions and inputs to the global dust cycle. It focuses on how elements in the glacial and aeolian geomorphic sub‐systems interact to determine the magnitude, frequency and timing of aeolian dust emissions, and on feedback mechanisms between the systems. Where they have been measured, dust emission intensity and deposition rates in glacierised catchments are very high, in some cases far exceeding those in lower latitudes, however, few studies span long time scales. The impact of future glacier retreat on the balance between sediment supply, availability and aeolian transport capacity and implications for glacigenic dust emissions is also considered. This balance depends on relative spatial and temporal changes in meltwater suspended sediment concentration and wind strengths, which promote dust emissions, and patterns and rates of soil development and vegetation succession on recently‐deglaciated terrain which protect sediments from deflation. Retreat of the Antarctic ice sheet could mean that in future glacigenic contributions to the dust cycle exceed those of non‐glacigenic sources in the southern hemisphere. Stratospheric aerosol loading from early 1981 to late 1985 was investigated by remote optical measurements using the twilight sounding method and by in situ mineral dust collections. Both experiments tracked the decay of aerosol abundances after the El Chichón eruption. A comparison between the remote optical observations and dust samplings suggests that aerosol maxima in 1985 were probably associated with a minor eruption of the Bezymianny volcano. Considering the different dynamical behavior of volcanic ash and condensed sulfuric acid aerosol, we traced the origin of collected dust to a minor eruption of Una Una volcano. This collected dust that could not be detected by remote sensing techniques against the high background level due to condensed aerosol from El Chichón highlights the complimentary nature of stratospheric dust collections and the twilight sounding method.  相似文献

The Saharan dust event that occurred between the 22nd and 30th of June 2012 influenced the atmospheric radiative properties over North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, the Western Mediterranean basin, extending its effects to France and Southern England. This event is well documented in satellite imagery, as well as on the air quality stations over the Iberian Peninsula and the AERONET NASA network. In order to assess the effect of the model vertical resolution on the extinction coefficient fields, as a proxy to the particulate matter concentrations in the atmosphere, the WRF-Chem model was applied during this period over a mother domain with a resolution of 18 km, covering Europe and North Africa. To this end five model setups differing in the number of vertical levels were tested. Model skills were evaluated by comparing the model results with CALIPSO and EARLINET LIDAR data. Results show that the model is able to simulate the higher level aerosol transport but it is susceptible to the vertical resolution used. This is due to the thickness of the transport layers which is, eventually, thinner than the vertical resolution of the model. When comparing model results to the observed vertical profiles, it becomes evident that the broad features of the extinction coefficient profile are generally reproduced in all model configurations, but finer details are captured only by the higher resolution simulations.  相似文献

This article presents a simple physical concept of aeolian dust accumulation, based on the behaviour of the subprocesses of dust deposition and dust erosion. The concept is tested in an aeolian dust wind tunnel. The agreement between the accumulation curve predicted by the model and the accumulation curve obtained in the experiments is close to perfect and shows that it is necessary to discriminate between the processes of aeolian dust deposition and aeolian dust accumulation. Two important thresholds determine the accumulation process. For wind speeds below the deflation threshold, the aeolian accumulation of dust increases linearly with the wind speed. For wind velocities between the deflation threshold and the accumulation limit, the sedimentation balance is above unity and there is still accumulation, though it rapidly drops once the deflation threshold has been exceeded. At wind speeds beyond the accumulation limit, the sedimentation balance is below unity and there will no longer be an accumulation of dust. The thresholds have been determined in a wind tunnel test at friction velocity u* = 0·34 m s?1 (deflation threshold) and u* = 0·43 m s?1 (accumulation limit), but these values are only indicative since they depend heavily on the characteristics of the accumulation surface and of the airborne grains. The prediction of wind erosion and dust emissions is important for controlling erosion and identifying dust sources in arid and semiarid regions of the world. This study predicts quantitatively wind erosion and dust emissions in Xinjiang Province, central Asia. The wind erosion prediction system (WEPS) was used to simulate annual soil and PM10 (particulate matter ≤10 μm in aerodynamic diameter) loss at 64 meteorological stations across the province. Soil and PM10 loss were simulated from bare surfaces at all 64 stations and from cotton and wheat fields at 11 stations. Simulated annual bare soil and PM10 loss were lowest in the Junggar (soil and PM10 loss were, respectively, 121.7 and 7.6 kg m-2) and Tarim basins (soil loss was 78.2 kg ha-1 and PM10 loss was 6.5 kg m-2) and highest in the Tu-ha Basin (soil and PM10 loss were, respectively, 638.2 and 37.7 kg m-2). Stations with the highest annual soil loss in the Tarim and Tu-ha basins also had the highest number of days with wind speeds >8 m s-1. This indicated wind influenced erosion, but other factors such as soil type also affect wind erosion. The maximum monthly bare soil and PM10 loss occurred in May in the three basins, substantiating that dust storms occur most frequently during spring in the region. Simulated soil and PM10 loss were lower for cotton and wheat than bare soil, thus suggesting that maintaining vegetative cover during a portion of the year provided some protection to the soil surface from wind erosion. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Nutrient supply in the area off Northwest Africa is mainly regulated by two processes, coastal upwelling and deposition of Saharan dust. In the present study, both processes were analyzed and evaluated by different methods, including cross-correlation, multiple correlation, and event statistics, using remotely sensed proxies of the period from 2000 to 2008 to investigate their influence on the marine environment. The remotely sensed chlorophyll-a concentration was used as a proxy for the phytoplankton biomass stimulated by nutrient supply into the euphotic zone from deeper water layers and from the atmosphere. Satellite-derived alongshore wind stress and sea-surface temperature were applied as proxies for the strength and reflection of coastal upwelling processes. The westward wind and the dust component of the aerosol optical depth describe the transport direction of atmospheric dust and the atmospheric dust column load.  相似文献

Wind tunnel experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of topography on the grain size characteristics of aeolian dust deposits. Experiments were performed on three isolated hills having various size and aspect ratios. The longitudinal profile of the median grain diameter was investigated for each hill. The longitudinal dust deposition profile was also studied for nine grain size classes of between 10 and 104 µm, as were wind and dust concentration profiles in the atmosphere upwind of, over and downwind of a hill. The wind tunnel experiments show that the grain size characteristics of aeolian dust deposits are affected by topography. Most apparent is the occurrence of a zone of reduced grain size on the leeside of hills, which extends from just upwind of the summit to a distance of several times the height of the hill. Slightly coarser than normal dust is deposited on the concave windward hill slope and in a zone downwind of the area of reduced grain size, but the increase in grain size in these zones remains very small. Although the normalized dust deposition profile for a hill does not vary substantially as a function of grain size, systematic trends are observed. The most important tendencies are: (1) a progressive extension, in the downwind direction, of a zone of decreased dust deposition on the leeside of a hill (the coarser the grains, the further downwind the zone of reduced deposition extends); (2) a progressive increase in dust deposition immediately upwind of a hill (the finer the grains, the higher the deposition value upwind of a hill becomes). This paper reports the first Raman study of a representative set of interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) belonging to different infrared spectral classes. Six different groups of Raman spectra can be discerned among the 20 IDPs studied. All particles, except the four belonging to group 6, exhibit the Raman signature of poorly crystallized carbonaceous material. The degree of “disorder” of this material, as evidenced by the width and relative strength of the two first-order Raman bands at 1360 relative cm−1 and 1600 relative cm−1, varies among particles from different spectral groups (increasing from group 1 to group 5). The most ordered carbonaceous material, with an estimated upper crystallite size limit of 60Å(group 1), is found in particles that tend to show deuterium depletions and that have infrared spectra characteristic of olivines. Raman spectra of particles belonging to groups 2, 3 and 4 (none of which have FTIR spectra characteristic of olivines) show clear evidence for the presence of carbonaceous material, although the “degree of order” is noticeably less than for carbons in group 1 particles. All seven particles with documented deuterium enrichments [1,2] fall into these three intermediate Raman groups. This relationship of the hydrogen isotopic compositions with the Raman data suggests different carbonaceous carrier phases for deuterium depletions and enrichments. Particles from Raman groups 5 and 6, whose spectra show little or no evidence for the presence of carbonaceous material, show deuterium abundances within the range of terrestrial rocks. In general, there is no obvious relationship between Raman groups and infrared classes which are based on the 10 μm absorption band due to silicates. In part, this is due to the fact that no Raman bands for silicates are seen, although silicates are known to be present from infrared and analytical electron microscopic measurements. The lack of silicate bands indicates that the silicate grains are coated with and/or imbedded in a carbonaceous material, which is presumably the reason that the particles look black in the visible. Several particles also show broad visible laser-induced photoluminescence, which is also probably produced by a carbonaceous component.  相似文献

Residual meteoritic material has been detected on the surface of crater interiors on lunar samples 60315,29 and 65315,68. Iron-nickel micrometeoroid residues are present in the form of mettallic spherules embedded in or attached to the crater glass-linings; stony-iron meteorite residual material is homogeneously mixed with the glass-linings.Crater simulation experiments show the dependence of crater diameter to depth ratio on projectile density. On the other hand, the projectile velocities exceeding 4 km/s have no measurable influence on the D/T ratios of microcraters. As a result, diameter-to-depth measurements on lunar microcraters yield three groups of micrometeorites in the size range between 1 μm and 1 mm: iron-nickel, stony-iron and low-density particles. The measured D/T values correspond directly to the kind of determined projectile residues: craters showing residues of iron-nickel meteorites have ratios of D/T = 1.3–1.4 and craters with stony-iron residues have ratios ofD/T = 1.9–2.1.Craters with diameters ?30 μm seem to have been formed predominantly by iron-nickel micrometeorites, whereas craters with diameters ?80 μm predominantly by stony meteorites.  相似文献

Hazardous electric arc furnace dust containing dioxins/furans and heavy metals is blended with harbor sediment, fired at 950–1100 °C to prepare lightweight aggregates. Dust addition can lower the sintering temperature by about 100 °C, as compared to a typical industrial process. After firing at 950 °C and 1050 °C, more than 99.85% of dioxins/furans originally present in the dust have been removed and/or destructed in the mix containing a dust/sediment ratio of 50:100. The heavy metals leached from all fired mixes are far below Taiwan EPA legal limits. The particle density of the lightweight aggregates always decreases with increasing firing temperature. Greater addition of the dust results in a considerably lower particle density (mostly <2.0 g cm−3) fired at 1050 °C and 1100 °C. However, firing at temperatures lower than 1050 °C produces no successful bloating, leading to a denser particle density (>2.0 g cm−3) that is typical of bricks.  相似文献

The roles of pre‐frontal, frontal and post‐frontal winds as the primary wind systems for dust entrainment and transport in Australia are well established. While the relevance of each system has been observed across different wind erosion events in central Australia, the entrainment of dust by all three winds during the passage of an individual front has not been demonstrated until now. Synoptic information, satellite aerosol and imagery, meteorological and dust concentration data are presented for a single case study erosion event in the lower Lake Eyre Basin. This event demonstrates variable dust transport in three different directions from one of the southern Hemisphere's most significant source regions, and the changing nature of the active dust pathways during the passage of a frontal system. While only a single dust event is considered, the findings show the complexity of mineral aerosol emission and transport patterns even within an individual dust outbreak. For the lower Lake Eyre Basin, this appreciation of pathway behaviour is significant for better understanding the role of aeolian inputs from the dominant Australian source to surrounding marine systems. In a wider context, the findings exhibit the detailed insights into major dust source dynamics that can be obtained from high resolution spatial and particularly temporal data, as used in combination. This work highlights the importance of adequately resolved data for the accurate determination of dust entrainment and transport patterns of major dust sources. A torn-up road offered the opportunity to sample a dust cloud continuously at different heights during a time interval of 51 hours. In particular the granulometrical characteristics of the dust caught were investigated. It appears that if the air layer in the vicinity of a dust cloud is not too turbulent, the cloud will be clearly granulometrically stratified. The coarse material moves chiefly at the bottom of the cloud, whereas the fine material will occur both at the bottom and at the top. The experiment also shows that the higher the dust in the cloud, the worse it is sorted. Above a critical height, however, the degree of sorting increases again. The variation of the mean dust diameter d50, as a function of the height z, can be expressed in a simple semi-logarithmic equation. The variation of the dust quantity G, as a function of the height z, can also be expressed in a semi-logarithmic form but the correlation is higher when a power equation is used. The ratio of fine silt to coarse silt seems to vary parabolically with height. One can only speak of an optimal transport height in the case of particles > 16 μm. For finer particles, the turbulence of a normal air stream is usually high enough to carry the particles anywhere in the dust cloud, so that one can no longer speak of an optimal transport height. The granulometrical border between aeolian transport in saltation and aeolian transport in suspension lies, according to the results of the experiment, at a diameter of about 63 μm.  相似文献

Summary The inter-dependences between local dust, thermal stability of the air and precipitation have been examined from the available data of two selected pairs of years for the station, Delhi, in northwest India. The indications are that the dust enters into the precipitation picture by virtue of its role in radiation balance during the relatively dry period, January to June, and by virtue of its role in cloud microstructure during the wet period, July to September.  相似文献

Thorium isotopes in the airborne dust collected at Tsukuba Science City in Japan from January 1981 to December 1982 show clear seasonal variations. Especially228Th in the airborne particles have a typical maximum cincentration between February and April, which is about an order of magnitude higher than during the remainder of the year. According to the result of size distribution of thorium isotope-bearing particles in the air, about 53% of228Th is associated with the particles less than 1.6 μm aerodynamic diameter. These results reveal that228Th in the airborne particles is present in fine soily matters originating from the East Asian deserts.  相似文献

Marine algae from intertidal habitats, when shaken in iron ore dust suspensions in seawater, take up appreciable quantities of the dust load. The quantities taken up vary with the modes of thallus construction. Considerable quantities of ore dust are retained by the plants after shaking for periods of up to 15h in dust free seawater. Marine algae can be used as a monitoring system for ore dust loading of seawater due to accidental spillages in the v vicinity of ore unloading terminals.  相似文献
