The possible existence of strong magnetic fields in stars is discussed and a method of constructing highly distorted models of magnetic, rotating stars developed. For stars with both poloidal and toroidal fields at the surface a force-free outer boundary condition is necessary. Non-linear solutions of the force-free equations must be used. The force-free equations and the structure equations for a white dwarf are solved simultaneously by a finite difference method. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

In Paper I (Hu, 1982), we discussed the the influence of fluctuation fields on the force-free field for the case of conventional turbulence and demonstrated the general relationships. In the present paper, by using the approach of local expansion, the equation of average force-free field is obtained as (1+b)?×B 0=(α#x002B;a)B 0#x002B;a (1)×B 0#x002B;K. The average coefficientsa,a (1),b, andK show the influence of the fluctuation fields in small scale on the configurations of magnetic field in large scale. As the average magnetic field is no longer parallel to the average electric current, the average configurations of force-free fields are more general and complex than the usual ones. From the view point of physics, the energy and momentum of the turbulent structures should have influence on the equilibrium of the average fields. Several examples are discussed, and they show the basic features of the fluctuation fields and the influence of fluctuation fields on the average configurations of magnetic fields. The astrophysical environments are often in the turbulent state, the results of the present paper may be applied to the turbulent plasma where the magnetic field is strong.  相似文献

The theoretical force-free magnetic fields in the first paper of this series, modeling magnetic configurations associated with polarity intrusion in active regions, are established to be all stable to linear ideal hydromagnetic perturbations under the boundary condition that anchors the lines of force rigidly to the photosphere. It is shown first that these force-free fields belong to an even larger class found by Chang and Carovillano (1981). A proof by the energy principle is then given to establish that all force-free magnetic fields in the larger class are absolutely stable. The physical implications of this result are discussed. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Force-free magnetic fields (f.f.f) are considered as the first approximation of magnetic hydrodynamic equations in the case when the energy of the field exceeds the thermal energy of the medium. Such a relation of energies takes place in the upper atmosphere of the Sun in active regions. The consequence of the virial theorem obtained shows that for any solution of the corresponding non-linear system of equations only two cases are possible: either the total energy of the field is given by a divergent integral, or in some regions the force-free character of field is destroyed. This permits the conclusion that it is impossible to build f.f. current systems everywhere, and therefore boundary problems for this type of fields are of the same importance as for harmonic fields.Integral relations are obtained which are the necessary conditions for the solution of boundary problems. According to the classical principle of Thompson the harmonic fields are always stable, while f.f.f. may be stable or unstable. It is shown that: (1) arbitrary f.f.f. are stable to small changes of boundary conditions; (2) among f.f.f. the hydrodynamically stable configurations exist. The hydrodynamic stability condition restricts the size of force-free currents in such configurations.  相似文献

A method is developed which for a certain day permits the approximate calculation of closed small and large scale magnetic field lines. From the photospheric longitudinal components of the magnetic field measured at this day normal components are derived taking into account the curvature of the solar surface. The magnetic fields are assumed to be potential or force-free fields. The method is applied to observations of September 5 and September 7, 1973. The projected magnetic field lines are compared with the loop structures which are visible in XUV pictures taken on these days. In the cases where no good agreement could be obtained for potential fields, force-free fields are calculated and fitted to the observed structures.  相似文献

We have obtained a complete set of the zeroth-order equations for a force-free field at large magnetic Reynolds numbers. One of the equations has often been overlooked in previous works. We discuss the question of uniqueness of solution of the Cauchy problem and outline a general method of solution in the plane and axisymmetric cases.  相似文献

Computation of solar magnetic fields from photospheric observations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The observational difficulties of obtaining the magnetic field distribution in the chromosphere and corona of the Sun has led to methods of extending photospheric magnetic measurements into the solar atmosphere by mathematical procedures. A new approach to this problem presented here is that a constant alpha force-free field can be uniquely determined from the tangential components of the measured photospheric flux alone. The vector magnetographs now provide measurements of both the solar photospheric tangential and the longitudinal magnetic field. This paper presents derivations for the computation of the solar magnetic field from these type of measurements. The fields considered are assumed to be a constant alpha force-free fields or equivalent, producing vanishing Lorentz forces. Consequently, magnetic field lines and currents are related by a constant and hence show an identical distribution. The magnetic field above simple solar regions are described from the solution of the field equations.  相似文献

Several methods currently used to extrapolate the structure of the solar magnetic field from surface measurements are examined and compared. In particular, the differences between the methods of Schmidt for potential fields and of Nakagawa and Raadu for force-free fields are explained. Suggestions are made regarding the use of these theoretical procedures in making physical conclusions.  相似文献

We begin with some comments on the methods of computation of the magnetic fields of solar active regions in terms of force-free field, and point out some mistakes in the solutions. Then we propose a method of quasi-linear force-free field, and probe the application of fast Fourier transform (FFT) in its computation. The magnetic field of the active region NOAA 9165 on 2000-09-15 is taken as an example, and three different methods are used in the determination of the configuration of magnetic lines. The results are then compared with the fine Hα filtergrams of Ganyu Station of Purple Mountain Observatory.  相似文献

On practical representation of magnetic field   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Various manners of determination of a magnetic field are reviewed briefly from the standpoint of practicality and uniqueness. Then a practical representation of magnetic fields in terms of a class of force-free magnetic field is described. The proposed scheme is based on the physical consideration that in the chromosphere and lower corona a quasistatic magnetic field must be nearly force-free and that for the class of force-free magnetic field, i.e., ×B=B with = constant, the magnetic field can be determined uniquely from the observed distribution of the vertical component of a magnetic field. The applicability of the representation is demonstrated by examples and the limitations are discussed. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

In this paper, dynamic processes in the solar atmosphere are studied numerically from a complete set of MHD equations. Dynamic evolution of the non-linear magnetic field is produced by the finite amplitude of the azimuthai magnetic field at the base of the flux tube of the solar atmosphere. It is assumed that the initial configuration of the magnetic field is a force-free and potential field, the magnetic field is disturbed at the base, the plasma is driven and a part of the magnetic energy is transformed into the kinetic energy of the plasma. The compressed flow of the plasma has the features of fast MHD waves. The computation results give quantitatively the non-linear evolution of strong magnetic fields. These results could be used in an explanation of coronal transients, surge, spray and eruptive prominence events in the solar atmosphere, as well as in a modelling of plasma behaviour in high-β structure experiments in the laboratory.  相似文献

This paper presents a new class of exact solutions describing the non-linear force-free field above a spatially localized photospheric bipolar magnetic region. An essential feature is the variation in all three Cartesian directions and this could not be modelled adequately with previously known symmetric force-free fields. Sequences of force-free fields are constructed and analyzed to simulate the slow growth of a pair of spots on the photosphere. The axis connecting the spots executes rotational motion, distorting the photospheric neutral line separating fluxes of opposite signs. We show directly from the analytic solutions that the resulting reversal of the positions of the spots relative to the background field is associated with (i) the creation of magnetic free energy, (ii) the severe shearing of localized low-lying loops in the vicinity where the photospheric transverse field aligns with the photospheric neutral line, and (iii) the emergence and disappearance of flux from the photosphere at these highly stressed regions. The model relates theoretically for the first time these different magnetic field features that have been suggested by observation and theoretical considerations to be flare precursors. A general formula, based on the virial theorem, is also given for the free energy of a force-free field, strictly in terms of the field value at the photosphere. This formula has obvious practical application. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Simple analytic models for the passive evolution of arcade-like magnetic fields through a series of force-free equilibria are presented. At the photospheric boundary, the normal magnetic field component is prescribed together with either the longitudinal field component or the photospheric shear. Analytic progress is made by considering either cylindrically symmetric solutions or using the separation of variables technique. Two distinct cylindrically symmetric force-free fields are obtained that possess the same normal field component and photospheric shear. The scond field contains a magnetic bubble. As the shear increases beyond a critical value, so the magnetic energy of the first configuration exceeds that of the second. The possibility is therefore suggested of an eruption of the first field outwards towards the second. Such an eruptive instability is proposed as the origin of a two-ribbon solar flare.A new analytic solution to the force-free field equations, of separable form, is discovered and it is pointed out that the existence of shear in a magnetic field does not preclude it from being potential. Now at AWRE, Aldermaston, Reading, Berkshire.  相似文献

Magnetic field extrapolation is an alternative method to study chromospheric and coronal magnetic fields. In this paper, two semi-analytical solutions of force-free fields (Low and Lou in Astrophys. J. 352:343, 1990) have been used to study the errors of nonlinear force-free (NLFF) fields based on force-free factor α. Three NLFF fields are extrapolated by approximate vertical integration (AVI) Song et al. (Astrophys. J. 649:1084, 2006), boundary integral equation (BIE) Yan and Sakurai (Sol. Phys. 195:89, 2000) and optimization (Opt.) Wiegelmann (Sol. Phys. 219:87, 2004) methods. Compared with the first semi-analytical field, it is found that the mean values of absolute relative standard deviations (RSD) of α along field lines are about 0.96–1.19, 0.63–1.07 and 0.43–0.72 for AVI, BIE and Opt. fields, respectively. While for the second semi-analytical field, they are about 0.80–1.02, 0.67–1.34 and 0.33–0.55 for AVI, BIE and Opt. fields, respectively. As for the analytical field, the calculation error of 〈|RSD|〉 is about 0.1∼0.2. It is also found that RSD does not apparently depend on the length of field line. These provide the basic estimation on the deviation of extrapolated field obtained by proposed methods from the real force-free field.  相似文献

Reliable measurements of the solar magnetic field are restricted to the level of the photosphere. For about half a century attempts have been made to calculate the field in the layers above the photosphere, i.e. in the chromosphere and in the corona, from the measured photospheric field. The procedure is known as magnetic field extrapolation. In the superphotospheric parts of active regions the magnetic field is approximately force-free, i.e. electric currents are aligned with the magnetic field. The practical application to solar active regions has been largely confined to constant-α or linear force-free fields, with a spatially constant ratio, α, between the electric current and the magnetic field. We review results obtained from extrapolations with constant-α force-free fields, in particular on magnetic topologies favourable for flares and on magnetic and current helicities. Presently, different methods are being developed to calculate non-constant-α or nonlinear force-free fields from photospheric vector magnetograms. We also briefly discuss these methods and present a comparison of a linear and a nonlinear force-free magnetic field extrapolation applied to the same photospheric boundary data. To seek nonlinear solutions of force-free magnetic fields, some symmetries or approximations are usually invoked. We consider magnetic fields lying on coordinate surfaces of an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. We conclude that only fields on parallel planes or spherical shells can be expressed in the form provided by Low in 1980s. These force-free fields are stable against small perturbations with rigid boundaries. Fields on cylindrical shells are also considered.  相似文献

The magnetodynamic (in)stability of a conducting fluid cylinder subject to the capillarity and electromagnetic forces has been developed. The cylinder is pervaded by a uniform magnetic field but embedded in the Lundquist force-free varying field that allows for flowing a current surrounding the fluid. A general eigenvalue relation is derived based on a study of the equilibrium and perturbed states. The stability criterion is discussed analytically in general terms. The surface tension is destabilizing for small axisymmetric mode and stable for all others. The principle of the exchange of stability is allowed for the present problem due to the non-uniform behaviour of the force-free field. Each of the axial and transverse force-free fields separately exerts a stabilizing influence in the most dangerous mode but the combined contribution of them is strongly destabilizing. Whether the model is acted upon the electromagnetic force (with the Lundquist field) the stability restrictions or/and the capillarity force are identified.Several reported works can be recovered as limiting cases with appropriate simplifications.  相似文献

We developed a code for the reconstruction of nonlinear force-free and non-force-free coronal magnetic fields. The 3D magnetic field is computed numerically with the help of an optimization principle. The force-free and non-force-free codes are compiled in one program. The force-free approach needs photospheric vector magnetograms as input. The non-force-free code additionally requires the line-of-sight integrated coronal density distribution in combination with a tomographic inversion code. Previously the optimization approach has been used to compute magnetic fields using all six boundaries of a computational box. Here we extend this method and show how the coronal magnetic field can be reconstructed only from the bottom boundary, where the boundary conditions are measured with vector magnetographs. The program is planed for use within the Stereo mission.  相似文献
