Recent numerical investigations of wave propagation near coronal magnetic null points (McLaughlin and Hood: Astron. Astrophys. 459, 641, 2006) have indicated how a fast MHD wave partially converts into a slow MHD wave as the disturbance passes from a low-β plasma to a high-β plasma. This is a complex process and a clear understanding of the conversion mechanism requires the detailed investigation of a simpler model. An investigation of mode conversion in a stratified, isothermal atmosphere with a uniform, vertical magnetic field is carried out, both numerically and analytically. In contrast to previous investigations of upward-propagating waves (Zhugzhda and Dzhalilov: Astron. Astrophys. 112, 16, 1982a; Cally: Astrophys. J. 548, 473, 2001), this paper studies the downward propagation of waves from a low-β to high-β environment. A simple expression for the amplitude of the transmitted wave is compared with the numerical solution.  相似文献

In this work we build a detailed dynamic model for an S0 galaxy possibly hosting a central massive dark object (MDO). We show that the photometric profiles and the kinematics along the major and minor axes, including the h 3 and h 4 profiles, imply the presence of a central MDO of mass     i.e. 0.3–2.8 per cent of the mass derived for the stellar spheroidal component. Models without MDO are unable to reproduce the kinematic properties of the inner stars and of the rapidly rotating nuclear gas.
The stellar population consists of an exponential disc (27 per cent of the light) and a diffuse spheroidal component (73 per cent of the light) that cannot be represented by a simple de Vaucouleurs profile at any radius. The M L ratios we found for the stellar components (3.3 and 6.6 respectively) are typical of those of disc and elliptical galaxies.  相似文献

Here the effect of rotation up to third order in the angular velocity of a star on the p, f and g modes is investigated. To do this, the third-order perturbation formalism presented by Soufi et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 334:911, 1998) and revised by Karami (Chin. J. Astron. Astrophys. 8:285, 2008), was used. I quantify by numerical calculations the effect of rotation on the oscillation frequencies of a uniformly rotating β-Cephei star with 12 M . For an equatorial velocity of 90 km s−1, it is found that the second- and third-order corrections for (l,m)=(5,−4), for instance, are of order of 0.07% of the frequency for radial order n=−3 and reaches up to 0.6% for n=−20.  相似文献

This paper has two parts: one about observational constraints related to the empirical differential oxygen abundance distribution (EDOD), and the other about inhomogeneous models of chemical evolution, in particular the theoretical differential oxygen abundance distribution (TDOD). In the first part, the EDOD is deduced from subsamples related to two different samples involving (i) N=532 solar neighbourhood (SN) stars within the range, −1.5<[Fe/H]<0.5, for which the oxygen abundance has been determined both in presence and in absence of the local thermodynamical equilibrium (LTE) approximation (Ramirez et al. in Astron. Astrophys. 465:271, 2007); and (ii) N=64 SN thick disk, SN thin disk, and bulge K-giant stars within the range, −1.7<[Fe/H]<0.5, for which the oxygen abundance has been determined (Melendez et al. in Astron. Astrophys. 484:L21, 2008). A comparison is made with previous results implying use of [O/H]–[Fe/H] empirical relations (Caimmi in Astron. Nachr. 322:241, 2001b; New Astron. 12:289, 2007) related to (iii) 372 SN halo subdwarfs (Ryan and Norris in Astron. J. 101:1865, 1991); and (iv) 268 K-giant bulge stars (Sadler et al. in Astron. J. 112:171, 1996). The EDOD of the SN thick + thin disk is determined by weighting the mass, for assumed SN thick to thin disk mass ratio within the range, 0.1–0.9. In the second part, inhomogeneous models of chemical evolution for the SN thick disk, the SN thin disk, the SN thick + thin disk, the SN halo, and the bulge, are computed assuming the instantaneous recycling approximation. The EDOD data are fitted, to an acceptable extent, by their TDOD counterparts with the exception of the thin or thick + thin disk, where two additional restrictions are needed: (i) still undetected, low-oxygen abundance thin disk stars exist, and (ii) a single oxygen overabundant star is removed from a thin disk subsample. In any case, the (assumed power-law) stellar initial mass function (IMF) is universal but gas can be inhibited from, or enhanced in, forming stars at different rates with respect to a selected reference case. Models involving a strictly universal IMF (i.e. gas neither inhibited from, nor enhanced in, forming stars with respect to a selected reference case) can also reproduce the data to an acceptable extent. Our main conclusions are (1) different models are necessary to fit the (incomplete) halo sample, which is consistent with the idea of two distinct halo components: an inner, flattened halo in slow prograde rotation, and an outer, spherical halo in net retrograde rotation (Carollo et al. in Nature 450:1020, 2007); (2) the oxygen enrichment within the inner SN halo, the SN thick disk, and the bulge, was similar and coeval within the same metallicity range, as inferred from observations (Prochaska et al. in Astron. J. 120:2513, 2000); (3) the fit to thin disk data implies an oxygen abundance range similar to its thick disk counterpart, with the extension of conclusion (2) to the thin disk, and the evolution of the thick + thin disk as a whole (Haywood in Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 388:1175, 2008) cannot be excluded; (4) leaving outside the outer halo, a fit to the data related to different environments is provided by models with a strictly universal IMF but different probabilities of a region being active, which implies different global efficiencies of the star formation rate; (5) a special case of stellar migration across the disk can be described by models with enhanced star formation, where a fraction of currently observed SN stars were born in situ and a comparable fraction is due to the net effect of stellar migration, according to recent results based on high-resolution N-body + smooth particle hydrodynamics simulations (Roškar et al. in Astrophys. J. Lett. 684:L79, 2008).  相似文献

Computer models of galaxy fields are generated using the Monte-Carlo simulation technique described in Paper I (MacGillivrayet al., 1982b). In the models, various scenarios for the true 3-dimensional distribution of galaxies (e.g., clustering on continuous or hierarchical scales) are incorporated and the galaxies projected onto a synthetic photographic plate. All factors affecting the light from distant galaxies are taken into account in the simulations and also factors affecting the detection and measurement of faint galaxy images on photographic plates scanned with an automatic plate-measuring machine. The model fields are compared, both qualitatively and statistically, with a field obtained from measures with COSMOS on a deep photograph taken with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The results indicate that the observed distribution of faint galaxies on photographic plates can only be represented by a model involving second order clustering of galaxies. However, the exact nature of this second-order clustering cannot be unambiguously ascertained from the 2-D distributions, both a uniformly-populated supercluster model and the cellular model being able to represent statistically the observed projected distribution of galaxies.  相似文献

Popular models for describing the luminosity-density profiles of dynamically hot stellar systems (e.g. Jaffe, Hernquist, Dehnen) were constructed with the desire to match the deprojected form of an   R 1/4  light profile. Real galaxies, however, are now known to have a range of different light-profile shapes that scale with mass. Consequently, although highly useful, the above models have implicit limitations, and this is illustrated here through their application to a number of real galaxy density profiles. On the other hand, the analytical density profile given by Prugniel & Simien closely matches the deprojected form of Sérsic   R 1/ n   light profiles – including deprojected exponential light profiles. It is thus applicable for describing bulges in spiral galaxies, dwarf elliptical galaxies, and both ordinary and giant elliptical galaxies. Moreover, the observed Sérsic quantities define the parameters of the density model. Here we provide simple equations, in terms of elementary and special functions, for the gravitational potential and force associated with this density profile. Furthermore, to match galaxies with partially depleted cores, and better explore the supermassive black hole/galaxy connection, we have added a power-law core to this density profile and derived similar expressions for the potential and force of this hybrid profile. Expressions for the mass and velocity dispersion, assuming isotropy, are also given. These spherical models may also prove appropriate for describing the dark matter distribution in haloes formed from ΛCDM cosmological simulations.  相似文献

We develop a diagnostic tool for determination of the electron densities in solar prominences using eclipse data. The method is based on analysis of the hydrogen Balmer-line intensities (namely Hα and Hβ) and the white-light emission due to Thomson scattering on the prominence electrons. Our approach represents a generalization of the ratio method already used by Koutchmy, Lebecq, and Stellmacher (Astron. Astrophys. 119, 261, 1983). In this paper we use an extended grid of non-LTE prominence models of Gouttebroze, Heinzel, and Vial (Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. Ser. 99, 513, 1993) and derive various useful relations between prominence radiation properties and electron densities. Simultaneously, an effective geometrical thickness of the prominence can also be obtained. As an example we apply our general technique to original eclipse data of Koutchmy, Lebecq, and Stellmacher (Astron. Astrophys. 119, 261, 1983). Finally, we use our results to determine the color of prominences as it should be seen during total eclipses.  相似文献

The decrease in the rms contrast of time-averaged images with the averaging time is compared between four data sets: (1) a series of solar granulation images recorded at La Palma in 1993, (2) a series of artificial granulation images obtained in numerical simulations by Rieutord et al. (Nuovo Cimento 25, 523, 2002), (3) a similar series computed by Steffen and his colleagues (see Wedemeyer et al. in Astron. Astrophys. 44, 1121, 2004), (4) a random field with some parameters typical of the granulation, constructed by Rast (Astron. Astrophys. 392, L13, 2002). In addition, (5) a sequence of images was obtained from real granulation images by using a temporal and spatial shuffling procedure, and the contrast of the average of n images from this sequence as a function of n is analysed. The series (1) of real granulation images exhibits a considerably slower contrast decrease than do both the series (3) of simulated granulation images and the series (4) of random fields. Starting from some relatively short averaging times t, the behaviour of the contrast in series (3) and (4) resembles the t −1/2 statistical law, whereas the shuffled series (5) obeys the n −1/2 law from n=2 on. Series (2) demonstrates a peculiarly slow decline of contrast, which could be attributed to particular properties of the boundary conditions used in the simulations. Comparisons between the analysed contrast-variation laws indicate quite definitely that the brightness field of solar granulation contains a long-lived component, which could be associated with locally persistent dark intergranular holes and/or with the presence of quasi-regular structures. The suggestion that the random field (4) successfully reproduces the contrast-variation law for the real granulation (Rast in Astron. Astrophys. 392, L13, 2002) can be dismissed.  相似文献

The NGC 5044 galaxy group is dominated by a luminous elliptical galaxy that is surrounded by ∼160 dwarf satellites. The projected number density profile of this dwarf population deviates within ∼1/3 of the virial radius from a projected Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile, which is assumed to approximate the underlying total matter distribution. By means of a semi-analytic model, we demonstrate that the interplay between gravitation, dynamical friction and tidal mass loss and destruction can explain the observed number density profile. We use only two parameters in our models: the total to stellar mass fraction of the satellite haloes and the disruption efficiency. The disruption efficiency is expressed by a minimum radius. If the tidal radius of a galaxy (halo) falls below this radius, it is assumed to become unobservable. The preferred parameters are an initial total to stellar mass fraction of ∼20 and a disruption radius of  4 kpc  . In that model, about 20 per cent of all the satellites are totally disrupted on their orbits within the group environment. Dynamical friction is less important in shaping the inner slope of the number density profile because the reduction in mass by tidal forces lowers the impact of the friction term. The main destruction mechanism is tide. In the preferred model, the total B -band luminosity of all disrupted galaxies is about twice the observed luminosity of the central elliptical galaxy, indicating that a significant fraction of stars are scattered into the intragroup medium. Dwarf galaxy satellites closer to the centre of the NGC 5044 group may exhibit optical evidence of partial tidal disruption. If dynamical friction forces the satellite to merge with the central elliptical, the angular momentum of the satellite tends to be removed at the apocentre passage. Afterwards, the satellite drops radially towards the centre.  相似文献

We present the first observations of molecular line emission in NGC 3718 with the IRAM 30m and the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. This galaxy is an excellent example for a strongly warped gas disk harboring an active galactic nucleus (AGN). An impressive dust lane is crossing the nucleus and a warp is developing into a polar ring. The molecular gas content is found to be typical of an elliptical galaxy with a relatively low molecular gas mass content (∼ 4 × 108 M ). The molecular gas distribution is found to warp from the inner disk together with the HI distribution. The CO data were also used to improve the kinematic modeling in the inner part of the galaxy, based on the so-called tilted ring-model. The nature of NGC 3718 is compared with its northern sky `twin' Centaurus A and the possible recent swallowing of a small-size gas-rich spiral is discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

It is shown that the radial velocity dispersion of the elongated HCGs (b/a ≤ 0.2) with smaller two‐dimensional galaxy‐galaxy median projected separation R is, on average, higher than those of the groups with larger R. It shows that galaxies in a group move preferentially along its elongation. Inspection of radial velocities of member galaxies in chain‐like and in roundish HCGs shows that galaxies in HCGs most probably rotate around the gravitational center of the corresponding group. Other two possible mechanisms: flying apart of galaxies from the group in opposite directions, and infall of field galaxies upon the group are excluded. It follows that HCGs are, probably, more stable formations, than it has been assumed. In this case the known inconsistencies between the results of the N‐body simulations and the observational facts are being excluded.  相似文献

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) was successfully launched on April 28, 2003. Over the last 7 years, the GALEX mission has expanded our understanding of the process of star formation and galaxy evolution. GALEX data, consisting of far-UV (1344-1786A) and near-UV (1771-2831A) imaging over most of the sky, and grism spectroscopy, are available to the entire astronomical community and to the general public via the Multi-mission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). The main characteristics and access tools to the large data archive (16TB) are presented. Groups within the GALEX Science Team, and the MAST archive teams, have undertaken complementary projects to conduct all-sky searches for time-variable and transient sources within GALEX data (e.g. Welsh et al. in Astron. J. 130:823, 2005; Wheatley et al. in Astron. J. 136:259, 2008). Results and tools for variability searches developed by MAST during this process, will be made available to the general community.  相似文献

Kubo (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 110:143–168, 2011) investigated the kinematical structure of the perturbation in the rotation of the elastic Earth due to the deformation caused by the outer bodies. In that paper, while the mechanism for the perturbation of the figure axis was made clear, that for the rotational axis was not shown explicitly. In the present study, following the same method, the structure of the perturbation of the rotational axis is investigated. This perturbation consists of the direct perturbation and the convective perturbation. First the direct perturbation is shown to be (AC)/A times as large as that of the figure axis, coinciding with the analytical expressions obtained in preceding studies by other authors. As for the convective perturbation, which appears only in the perturbation of the rotational axis but not in that of the figure axis, it is shown to be (AC)/A times the angular separation between the original figure axis and the induced figure axis produced by the elastic deformation, A and C being the principal moments of inertia of the Earth. If the perturbing bodies are motionless, the conclusion of Kubo (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 105:261–274, 2009) holds strictly, i.e. the sum of the direct and the convective perturbations of the rotational axis coincides with the perturbation of the figure axis.  相似文献

Numerical experiments undertaken to investigate the longevity and behavior of dark-lane elliptical galaxies are described. This is dynamically the same problem as a disk galaxy in a massive halo. Spiral galaxies are disks from a dynamical point of view. A disk of particles embedded in a self-consistent galaxy provides the basic model used for the experiments. This model is applicable to ordinary disk galaxies if the disk is interpreted as the visible galaxy and the galaxy is interpreted as the massive halo thought to be present around disk galaxies. Fully three-dimensional fully self-consistentn-body computer programs that can handle 100,000 particles are used for the experiments. The background galaxy is oblate, and the disk is inclined to the axis of the oblate galaxy, so the disk precesses differentially to produce a warp. A surprising result is that the galaxy center shifted, leaving the disk center orbiting around the galaxy center. This produces interesting phenomena reminiscent of observations in the region of the Galactic center.  相似文献

We present deep wide-field (16.4×16.4 arcmin2) Washington CT 1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member of the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider and deeper field than any previous CCD photometry. A single King model does not give a good fit to the surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472, but they can be fitted approximately using two King models: with the separate models representing the inner and outer regions . Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fitted approximately by a de Vaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative colour gradient within 3 arcmin of NGC 4472, in the sense that the colour gets bluer with increasing radius. The slope of the colour gradient for this region is derived to be Δ μ ( C − T 1)=−0.08 mag arcsec−2 for Δ log  r =1, which corresponds to a metallicity gradient of Δ[Fe/H]=−0.2 dex. However, the surface colour becomes gradually redder with increasing radius beyond 3 arcmin. A comparison of the structural parameters of NGC 4472 in C and T 1 images has shown that there is little difference in the shapes of ellipses observed using isochromes or isophotes. In addition, photometric and structural parameters of NGC 4472 have been determined.  相似文献

The colour–magnitude relation (CMR) of cluster elliptical galaxies has been widely used to constrain their star formation histories (SFHs) and to discriminate between the monolithic collapse and merger paradigms of elliptical galaxy formation. We use a Λ cold dark matter hierarchical merger model of galaxy formation to investigate the existence and redshift evolution of the elliptical galaxy CMR in the merger paradigm. We show that the SFH of cluster ellipticals predicted by the model is quasi-monolithic , with only ∼10 per cent of the total stellar mass forming after   z ∼ 1  . The quasi-monolithic SFH results in a predicted CMR that agrees well with its observed counterpart in the redshift range  0 < z < 1.27  . We use our analysis to argue that the elliptical-only CMR can be used to constrain the SFHs of present-day cluster ellipticals only if we believe a priori in the monolithic collapse model. It is not a meaningful tool for constraining the SFH in the merger paradigm, since a progressively larger fraction of the progenitor set of present-day cluster ellipticals is contained in late-type star-forming systems at higher redshift, which cannot be ignored when deriving the SFHs. Hence, the elliptical-only CMR is not a useful discriminant between the two competing theories of elliptical galaxy evolution.  相似文献

We present a study of magnetic fields in umbral dots (UDs) and its consequences on the Joule heating of the UDs. Hamedivafa (Astron. Astrophys. 407, 761, 2003) studied the Joule heating using the vertical component of the magnetic field. In this paper the magnetic field profile in the UDs is investigated by including a new azimuthal component of the magnetic field that might explain a relatively large enhancement of Joule heating causing higher brightness near the circumference of the UDs.  相似文献

We use the flux-transport dynamo prediction scheme introduced by Dikpati, de Toma, and Gilman (Geophys. Res. Lett. 33, L05102, 2006) to make separate simulations and predictions of sunspot cycle peaks for northern and southern hemispheres. Despite the division of the data, the skill level achieved is only slightly lower than that achieved for the sum of both hemispheres. The model shows skill at simulating and predicting the difference in peaks between North and South, provided that difference is more than a few percent. The simulation and prediction skill is achieved without adjustment to any parameters of the model that were used when peaks for the sum of North and South sunspot areas was simulated. The results are also very insensitive to the averaging length applied to the input data, provided the simulations and predictions are for peaks defined by averaging the observations over at least 13 rotations. However, in its present form, the model is not capable of skillfully simulating or predicting short-time-scale features of individual solar cycles.  相似文献

To determine the relationship between transient coronal (soft X-ray or EUV) sigmoids and erupting flux ropes, we analyse four events in which a transient sigmoid could be associated with a filament whose apex rotates upon eruption and two further events in which the two phenomena were spatially but not temporally coincident. We find the helicity sign of the erupting field and the direction of filament rotation to be consistent with the conversion of twist into writhe under the ideal MHD constraint of helicity conservation, thus supporting our assumption of flux rope topology for the rising filament. For positive (negative) helicity the filament apex rotates clockwise (counterclockwise), consistent with the flux rope taking on a reverse (forward) S shape, which is opposite to that observed for the sigmoid. This result is incompatible with two models for sigmoid formation: one identifying sigmoids with upward arching kink-unstable flux ropes and one identifying sigmoids with a current layer between two oppositely sheared arcades. We find instead that the observations agree well with the model by Titov and Démoulin (Astron. Astrophys. 351, 707, 1999), which identifies transient sigmoids with steepened current layers below rising flux ropes.  相似文献
