The first supersoft source (SSS) identification with an optical nova in M 31 was based on ROSAT observations. Twenty additional X‐ray counterparts (mostly identified as SSS by their hardness ratios) were detected using archival ROSAT, XMM‐Newton and Chandra observations obtained before July 2002. Based on these results optical novae seem to constitute the major class of SSS in M 31. An analysis of archival Chandra HRC‐I and ACIS‐I observations obtained from July 2004 to February 2005 demonstrated that M 31 nova SSS states lasted from months to about 10 years. Several novae showed short X‐ray outbursts starting within 50 d after the optical outburst and lasting only two to three months. The fraction of novae detected in soft X‐rays within a year after the optical outburst was more than 30%. Ongoing optical nova monitoring programs, optical spectral follow‐up and an up‐to‐date nova catalogue are essential for the X‐ray work. Re‐analysis of archival nova data to improve positions and find additional nova candidates are urgently needed for secure recurrent nova identifications. Dedicated XMM‐Newton/Chandra monitoring programs for X‐ray emission from optical novae covering the centre area of M 31 continue to provide interesting new results (e.g. coherent 1105 s pulsations in the SSS counterpart of nova M31N 2007‐12b). The SSS light curves of novae allow us – together with optical information – to estimate the mass of the white dwarf, of the ejecta and the burned mass in the outburst. Observations of the central area of M 31 allow us – in contrast to observations in the Galaxy – to monitor many novae simultaneously and proved to be prone to find many interesting SSS and nova types (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report the spectroscopic observations of four extragalactic novae in M31 and in M33, secured at Loiano Observatory, Italy. Nova M31 2009-10b is a luminous nova that needed some days to achieve the peak brightness. We confirm that it is a Fe II nova and we show that it is one of the most luminous novae ever observed in M31, showing an evolution close to that of the bright extragalactic novae M31 2007-11d, LMC 1991 and SN 2010U. The novae M31 2010-07a and M31 2011-07b are standard Fe II novae. Nova M33 2010-07a is a Fe II nova that showed a peculiar rebrightening, during which we observed emission lines with P Cyg profiles: we suggest that it is the first observed nova in M33 that underwent a second mass ejection.  相似文献

Abstract— Infrared observations reveal that classical novae often form dust in their expanding shells ejected into the interstellar medium as a consequence of violent outbursts. Recent experimental efforts have led to the identification of presolar nova candidate grains from the Acfer 094 and Murchison meteorites. Recently, however, concerns have been raised about the stellar paternity of these grains by new measurements on another sample of SiC grains: these grains are characterized by 12C/13C and 14N/15N ratios similar to the ones reported for the nova grains, but a number of different imprints suggest that a possible supernova origin cannot be excluded. Here we review the predicted nucleosynthetic imprints accompanying nova explosions and discuss the chances to synthesize heavier species, such as titanium, in nova‐like events.  相似文献

We present results obtained from near-infrared JHK spectroscopic observations of novae V2491 Cygni and V597 Puppis in the early declining phases of their 2007 and 2008 outbursts, respectively. In both objects, the spectra displayed emission lines of H  i , O  i , He  i and N  i . In V597 Pup, the He  i lines were found to strengthen rapidly with time. Based on the observed spectral characteristics, both objects are classified as He/N novae. We have investigated the possibility of V2491 Cyg being a recurrent nova as has been suggested. By studying the temporal evolution of the linewidths in V2491 Cyg, it appears unlikely that the binary companion is a giant star with heavy wind as in recurrent novae of the RS Oph type. Significant deviations from that of recombination case B conditions are observed in the strengths of the H  i lines. This indicates that the H  i lines, in both novae, are optically thick during the span of our observations. The slope of the continuum spectra in both cases was found to have a  λ−(3−3.5)  dependence which deviates from a Rayleigh–Jeans spectral distribution. Both novae were detected in the post-outburst supersoft X-ray phase; V2491 Cyg being very bright in X-rays has been the target of several observations. We discuss and correlate our infrared observations with the observed X-ray properties of these novae.  相似文献

The current status of our knowledge about the formation and evolution of dust and molecules in the environments of classical novae is reviewed. We discuss the chemistry that leads to the formation of diatomic molecules and nucleation sites, dust formation in nova winds, the properties and the processing of dust in nova environments, and the eventual fate of the dust. We also discuss the environment of nova progenitors, and what this can tell us about the pre-nova evolution of close binary systems. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

On the Venusian surface, there can be found a rather large population of structures with prominent radial features. The term “nova” or “astrum/astra” are used to describe this special group of volcanotectonic structures with a stellate fracture pattern radiating around a central summit or fracture. In this paper, we studied the distribution and characteristics of 74 novae to determine if there are suitable ways to categorize them and to find out how this categorization could explain the differences in nova characteristics. The nova locations establish that these structures are not distributed sporadically, but they display both latitudinal and longitudinal concentrations. In addition, it is evident that the geological environments represent the major differences between individual novae. Most of them, in general, are connected to some larger volcanotectonic unit. The differences in geological surroundings can be used as the basis for characterizing novae by dividing them into different categories: (a) novae located either within or close to a rather large deformation zone, (b) novae located on plains, (c) novae located close to tessera terrain, and (d) novae situated within volcanic areas either close to volcanoes or within an area with a high density of coronae. The analysis of this characterization establishes that geological environments are the main cause for divergent nova characteristics, i.e., differences in morphology, volcanism, and topography, which, on the other hand, are possible ways to classify novae. In particular, the morphological classification (Type I, novae with features radiating from the same point; Type II, radial structures radiating from a fissure or other linear structure; Type III, lava flows or fields covering radiant point area; Type IV, semiradial structures which do not radiate from a well-defined radiant point, fissure, or area) shows some correlations between geological environments and the type of nova, indicating that the morphological appearance and the location—and, thereby, the geologic environment—of the novae are correlated to some extent.  相似文献

Nova outbursts on rotating oblate white dwarfs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A novel hypothesis is proposed in which the prolate geometry and latitudinal abundance gradients observed in nova ejecta are simultaneously explained as a natural consequence of the rotation and oblate distortion of the white dwarf. Thermonuclear runaway on the surface of an oblate rotating white dwarf is strongly affected by the local gravity, leading to stronger outbursts and faster outflows at the poles than in the equatorial regions. A unified scheme is presented which is capable of explaining the gross structures of the shells of classical novae, those 'recurrent novae' with giant companions, and symbiotic novae, which also show evidence for bipolar outbursts. It is shown that this hypothesis is capable of producing the observed geometry of the ejecta of the classical novae DQ Her 1934, V1500 Cyg 1975 and GK Per 1901, the recurrent nova RS Oph (1985 outburst), and the symbiotic nova HM Sge. Some observationally testable predictions which follow from this hypothesis are discussed.  相似文献

We present our spectroscopic observations of the novae V1425, V1493, and V1494 Aql carried out with the 125-cm telescope at the Crimean Station of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute in the wavelength range 4000–11000 Å. We measured the emission-line intensities, determined the nova shell expansion velocities from the line profile FWHMs and components, and estimated the interstellar reddening from the first members of the Balmer series. The chemical composition of the nova shells is analyzed. Nitrogen and oxygen were found to be overabundant in V1425 and V1494 Aql; the helium abundance turned out to be normal in the two stars.  相似文献

Models of Galactic 1.275‐MeV emission produced by the decay of the radionuclide 22Na have been computed. Several frequency–spatial distributions of novae have been investigated using recent results of nova rates and spatial distributions of novae in our Galaxy. These models allow us to estimate the lower limit of the 22Na mass ejected per ONe nova detectable with the future spectrometer (SPI) of the INTEGRAL observatory as a function of the frequency–spatial distribution of ONe novae in the Galaxy. Calculations using recent estimations of the expected 22Na mass ejected per ONe nova show that the detection of the Galactic emission of 1.275‐MeV photons will be difficult with the future spectrometer of the INTEGRAL observatory, whereas the cumulative emission around the Galactic Centre has some chance of being detected during the deep survey of the central radian of the Galaxy.  相似文献

We present the results of our study of 19 novae in the galaxy M31 on photographs taken with wide-field telescopes in 1999–2005. Two of the six novae discovered in our program (ShA 65 and ShA 67) have been identified with supersoft X-ray sources, the discovery of one nova (ShA 69) was reported in IAU Circulars, and the other three novae (ShA 66, ShA 68, and ShA 70) are reported for the first time.  相似文献

Nova explosions are caused by the explosive burning of hydrogen in the envelope of accreting white dwarfs. During the thermonuclear runaway some radioactive isotopes are synthesized, which emit γ -rays when they decay. The γ -ray signatures of a nova explosion still remain undetected, because even the best instruments like SPI onboard INTEGRAL are not sensitive enough for the dim and broad lines emitted by novae at their typical distances. A very different situation is expected with a focusing telescope, like MAX. Prospects for detectability with a future γ -ray lens telescope are presented, with a special emphasis on the important information that γ -rays would provide about the explosion mechanism and the underlying white dwarf star  相似文献

Novae are expected to form in all stellar systems with a binary population. Detection of extragalactic novae provides direct evidence of close binary populations and possible spatial variations in those populations. Comparison of extragalactic novae with their local counterparts can yield valuable tests of close binary evolution theory. I report early results from surveys of globular clusters, the Large Magellanic Cloud and M81 for classical novae in eruption and in quiescence. T Sco, the nova of 1860 A.D. in the globular cluster M80, has now been recovered. It is three magnitudes fainter than canonical old novae, though this might be an inclination effect. Seven quiescent old novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been recovered (at brightnesses comparable to their Galactic counterparts). Their orbital periods are now within reach. Twenty-three novae have been detected on archival 5 meter Palomar plates of M81. The spatial distribution of these novae strongly suggests that most come from the spiral arm population.  相似文献

Recurrent novae
A brief review of recurrent novae studies which have been undertaken in South Africa during the last ten years is given. These works have substantially altered our view of these objects as distinct sub-classes of cataclysmic variable stars. Observational results which led to new developments in our understanding of the recurrent novae are reviewed in some detail. Observations of V1017 Sgr, which had been suggested as a recurrent nova, are also mentioned.  相似文献

To investigate the transient nature of supersoft sources (SSSs) in M 31, we compared SSS candidates ofthe XMM‐Newton Deep Survey, ROSAT PSPC surveys and the Chandra catalogues in the same field. We found 40 SSSs in the XMM‐Newton observations. While 12 of the XMM‐Newton sources were brighter than the limiting flux of the ROSAT PSPC survey, only two were detected with ROSAT ∼10 yr earlier. Five correlate with recent optical novae which explains why they were not detected by ROSAT. The remaining 28 XMM‐Newton SSSs have fluxes below the ROSAT detection threshold. Nevertheless we found one correlation with a ROSAT source, which had significantly larger fluxes than during the XMM‐Newton observations. Ten of the XMM‐Newton SSSs were detected by Chandra with <1– ∼6yr between the observations. Five were also classified as SSSs by Chandra. Of the 30 ROSAT SSSs three were confirmed with XMM‐Newton, while for 11 sources other classifications are suggested. Of the remaining 16 sources one correlates with an optical nova. Of the 42 Chandra very‐soft sources five are classified as XMM‐Newton SSSs, while for 22 we suggest other classifications. Of the remaining 15 sources, nine are classified as transient by Chandra, one of them correlates with an optical nova. These findings underlined the high variability of the sources of this class and the connection between SSSs and optical novae. Only three sources, were detected by all three missions as SSSs. Thus they are visible for more than a decade, despite their variability (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We review the properties of classical novae, with particular emphasison their dust formation. Recent observational and theoretical workindicates that CO formation in nova winds does not go to saturation,so that both oxygen- and carbon-rich condensates can appearsimultaneously in the ejected material. The UIR carrier in novaeappears to be near-unique to novae, although whether this is due toenvironmental, excitation or abundance effects is not yet clear.  相似文献

Space densities and galacticz-distributions of novae, recurrent novae, dwarf novae and symbiotic stars are newly determined and discussed in the context of earlier determinations. The data are then compared with the distributions of single and binary stars of possibly related types (late type giants, Mira variables, Algol systems, W UMa systems).Novae and dwarf novae have similar distributions, those of fairly young stellar populations. The observed space density of potential novae (novalike objects) indicates that the mean recurrence time of novae might be as small as a few hundred years, which leads, with given nova shell masses and mass transfer rates in the minimum stage, to a secular decrease of the masses of the components undergoing nova outbursts.Recurrent novae and symbiotic stars have distributions of older stellar populations, similar to those of late type giants and Mira variables. On the basis of galactic distribution, novae and dwarf novae are closely related and may be final stages of W UMa systems, as well as progenitors of supernovae of type I. A small fraction of W UMa systems seems to belong to an older population. If evolutionary transitions between these types of stars can be substantiated, the presence of a minority of novae and dwarf novae in globular clusters and of supernovae I in elliptical galaxies can be explained.Due to the lack of sufficiently well determined space distributions of Algol binaries, the suggestion that long-period Algol systems might be the progenitors of cataclysmic binaries can as yet neither be substantiated nor refuted. A very high space density of long-period Algol systems in the solar neighbourhood is derived. The observed space density of cataclysmic binaries could be explained by the transformation of a small percentage of the long-period Algol systems by common envelope evolution.Paper presented at the Lembang-Bamberg IAU Colloquium No. 80 on Double Stars: Physical Properties and Generic Relations, held at Bandung, Indonesia, 3–7 June, 1983.  相似文献

A review of light curves of known x-ray novae made it possible to identify criteria by which x-ray nova candidates were selected among old novae: amplitude of optical outburst 7–10 m, shape of light curve during the outburst with a temporary fading by 2–3m lasting up to four days and an abrupt final fading from the 6m level (relative to the quiet state). We identified LS And, AL Com, V592 Her, and HV Vir as x-ray nova candidates. Recurrent outbursts should be expected for the first and third stars. Less reliable candidates are V341 Nor, V787 Sgr, and V719 Sco. A possible recurrent nova candidate may be V1330 Cyg. We report spectroscopic orbital periods of 0.147 d (=3.53 h) for V533 Her, 0.207 d (=4.97 h) for V446 Her and 1.478 d for X Ser. V533 Her (Nova Herculis 1963) shows absorption features in its He  i and Balmer lines which appear only in a limited range of orbital phase, suggesting that it is a low-inclination SW Sextantis star. V446 Her is unusual in that it has started normal dwarf nova eruptions after a nova outburst, but we find nothing else unusual about it – in particular, a distance estimate based on its dwarf nova outbursts agrees nicely with another based on the rate of decline of its nova eruption, both giving d ∼1 kpc. In X Ser, unlike in other old novae with long periods, no spectral features of the secondary star are visible. This and its outburst magnitude both suggest that it is quite distant and luminous, and at least 1 kpc from the Galactic plane.  相似文献

A V-band nova search was carried out in NGC 3627 with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 data which was obtained in the period between November 1997 and January 1998. A total of four novae candidates were discovered which corresponds to a global nova rate of R = 83.65 ± 7.58 yr−1. Taking into account the K-band luminosity obtained from 2MASS (Jarrett et al., 2003) yielded a luminosity specific nova rate (LSNR) of νK = 9.60 ± 1.64 novae per year per 1010L⊙,K. Excluding one of the candidates which may be a long-period variable leads to a LSNR of νK = 7.20 ± 1.23 novae per year per 1010L⊙,K. These values are higher than other known nova rates for external galaxies except the Magellanic Clouds.  相似文献

The light curve and spectra of Nova Centauri 1995 (V888 Cen) are analysed. The spectra were obtained a few days post-maximum. The nova is found to be a very fast nova, declining by 2 mag within about 5±2 d of maximum. The light curve shows strong oscillations in the transition region, of peak-to-peak amplitude about 1.5 mag and period 12–15 d. The light curve of Nova Centauri resembles closely that of Nova Aquilae 1918 (V603 Aql).
The early blue and red spectra obtained at Mt John show broad emission lines, many with P Cygni profiles. The absorption lines are found in two velocity systems at about −1765 and −3010 km s−1, in respectively the principal and diffuse-enhanced stages of spectral development, as defined by McLaughlin. Nova Centauri has many Fe  ii lines in emission, indicating that it is a member of the Williams Fe  ii class of classical novae.  相似文献
