Initial results on the iron K‐shell line and reflection component in several AGN observed as part of the Suzaku Guaranteed Time program are reviewed. This paper discusses a small sample of Compton‐thin Seyferts observed to date with Suzaku; namely MCG‐5‐23‐16, MCG‐6‐30‐15, NGC4051, NGC3516, NGC2110, 3C 120 and NGC2992. The broad iron Kα emission line appears to be present in all but one of these Seyfert galaxies, while the narrow core of the line from distant matter is ubiquitous in all the observations. The iron line in MCG‐6‐30‐15 shows the most extreme relativistic blurring of all the objects, the red‐wing of the line requires the inner accretion disk to extend inwards to within 2.2R g of the black hole, in agreement with the XMM‐Newton observations. Strong excess emission in the Hard X‐ray Detector (HXD) above 10 keV is observed in many of these Seyfert galaxies, consistent with the presence of a reflection component from reprocessing in Compton‐thick matter (e.g. the accretion disk). Only one Seyfert galaxy (NGC 2110) shows neither a broad iron line nor a reflection component. The spectral variability of MCG‐6‐30‐15, MCG‐5‐23‐16 and NGC 4051 is also discussed. In all 3 cases, the spectra appear harder when the source is fainter, while there is little variability of the iron line or reflection component with source flux. This agrees with a simple two component spectral model, whereby the variable emission is the primary power‐law, while the iron line and reflection component remain relatively constant. We present an X-ray spectroscopic study of the bright Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies NGC 1068 and the Circinus Galaxy, performed with BeppoSAX . Matt et al. interpreted the spectrum above 4 keV as the superposition of Compton reflection and warm plasma scattering of the nuclear radiation. When this continuum is extrapolated downwards to 0.1 keV, further components arise. The NGC 1068 spectrum is rich in emission lines, mainly owing to K α transitions of He-like elements from oxygen to iron, plus a K α fluorescent line from neutral iron. If the ionized lines originate in the warm scatterer, its thermal and ionization structure must be complex. From the continuum and line properties, we estimate a column density, N warm, of the warm scatterer less than a few×1021 cm−2. In the Circinus Galaxy, the absence of highly ionized iron is consistent with a scattering medium with U X≲5 and N warm∼ a few×1022 cm−2. In both cases the neutral iron line is most naturally explained as fluorescence in the medium responsible for the Compton reflection continuum. In NGC 1068 an optically thin plasma emission with kT ≃500 eV and strongly sub-solar metallicity is required, while such a component is only marginal in the Circinus Galaxy. We tentatively identify this component as emission of diffuse hot gas in the nuclear starbursts. Possible causes for the metal depletion are discussed.  相似文献

We study the N H distribution in a complete sample of 88 active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected in the 20–40 keV band from INTEGRAL /Imager on Board the Integral Satellite (IBIS) observations. We find that the fraction of absorbed  ( N H≥ 1022 cm2)  sources is 43 per cent while the Compton thick AGN comprise 7 per cent of the sample. While these estimates are fully compatible with previous soft gamma-ray surveys, they would appear to be in contrast with results reported by Risaliti, Maiolino & Salvati using an optically selected sample. This apparent difference can be explained as being due to a selection bias caused by the reduction in high energy flux in Compton thick objects rendering them invisible at our sensitivity limit. Taking this into account, we estimate that the fraction of highly absorbed sources is actually in close agreement with the optically selected sample. Furthermore, we show that the measured fraction of absorbed sources in our sample decreases from 80 to ∼20–30 per cent as a function of redshift with all Compton thick AGN having   z ≤ 0.015  . If we limit our analysis to this distance and compare only the type 2 objects in our sample with the Risaliti et al. objects below this redshift value, we find a perfect match to their N H distribution. We conclude that in the low-redshift bin we are seeing almost the entire AGN population, from unabsorbed to at least mildly Compton thick objects, while in the total sample we lose the heavily absorbed 'counterparts' of distant and therefore dim sources with little or no absorption. Taking therefore this low z bin as the only one able to provide the 'true' distribution of absorption in types 1 and 2 AGN, we estimate the fraction of Compton thick objects to be ≥24 per cent.  相似文献

We report on a joint ASCA and RXTE observation spanning an ∼400 ks time interval of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG–6-30-15. The data clearly confirm the presence of a broad skewed iron line ( W ∼266 eV) and Compton reflection continuum at higher energies reported in our previous paper. We also investigate whether the gravitational and Doppler effects, which affect the iron line, may also be manifest in the reflected continuum. The uniqueness of this data set is underlined by the extremely good statistics that we obtain from the approximately four million photons that make up the 2–20 keV RXTE PCA spectrum alone. This, coupled with the high energy coverage of HEXTE and the spectral resolution of ASCA in the iron line regime, has allowed us to constrain the relationship between abundance and reflection fraction for the first time at the 99 per cent confidence level. The reflection fraction is entirely consistent with a flat disc, i.e. the cold material subtends 2π sr at the source, to an accuracy of 20 per cent. Monte Carlo simulations show that the observed strong iron line intensity is explained by an overabundance of iron by a factor of ∼2 and an underabundance of the lower- Z elements by a similar factor. By considering non-standard abundances, a clear and consistent picture can be made in which both the iron line and reflection continuum come from the same material such as, e.g., an accretion disc.  相似文献

We report on a 50-ks observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG–6-30-15 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer . The data clearly show the broad fluorescent iron line (equivalent width ∼ 250 eV) and the Compton reflection continuum at higher energies. A comparison of the iron line and the reflection continuum has enabled us to constrain the reflective fraction and the elemental abundances in the accretion disc. Temporal studies provide evidence that spectral variability is a result of changes in both the amount of reflection seen and the properties of the primary X-ray source itself.  相似文献

We present a full set of model atmosphere equations for the accretion disc around a supermassive black hole irradiated by a hard X-ray lamp of power-law spectral distribution. Model equations allow for multiple Compton scattering of radiation on free electrons, and for large relative photon–electron energy exchange at the time of scattering. We present spectra in specific intensities integrated over the disc surface. Theoretical outgoing intensity spectra show soft X-ray excess below 1 keV, and distinct Kα and Kβ fluorescent lines of iron. We demonstrate the existence of the Compton Shoulder and claim that it can contribute to the asymmetry and equivalent widths of some observed Fe Kα lines in active galactic nuclei. Our models exhibit the effect of limb-brightening in reflected X-rays.  相似文献

We present new BeppoSAX observations of seven BL Lacertae objects selected from the 1-Jy sample plus one additional source. The collected data cover the energy range     (observer's frame), reaching ∼50 keV for one source (BL Lac). All sources characterized by a peak in their multifrequency spectra at infrared/optical energies (i.e., of the low-energy peaked BL Lac type, LBL) display a relatively flat     X-ray spectrum, which we interpret as inverse Compton emission. Four objects (two-thirds of the LBLs) show some evidence for a low-energy steepening, which is probably due to the synchrotron tail merging into the inverse Compton component around ∼     . If this were generally the case with LBLs, it would explain why the     ROSAT spectra of our sources are systematically steeper than the BeppoSAX ones     . The broad-band spectral energy distributions fully confirm this picture, and a synchrotron inverse Compton model allows us to derive the physical parameters (intrinsic power, magnetic field, etc.) of our sources. Combining our results with those obtained by BeppoSAX on BL Lacs covering a wide range of synchrotron peak frequency, ν peak, we confirm and clarify the dependence of the X-ray spectral index on ν peak originally found in ROSAT data.  相似文献

We present simultaneous ASCA and RXTE observations of Ark 564, the brightest known 'narrow-line' Seyfert 1 in the 2–10 keV band. The measured X-ray spectrum is dominated by a steep (Γ≈2.7) power-law continuum extending to at least 20 keV, with imprinted Fe K-line and edge features and an additional 'soft excess' below ∼1.5 keV. The energy of the iron K-edge indicates the presence of highly ionized material, which we identify in terms of reflection from a strongly irradiated accretion disc. The high reflectivity of this putative disc, together with its strong intrinsic O  viii Ly α and O  viii recombination emission, can also explain much of the observed soft excess flux. Furthermore, the same spectral model also provides a reasonable match to the very steep 0.1–2 keV spectrum deduced from ROSAT data. The source is much more rapidly variable than 'normal' Seyfert 1s of comparable luminosity, increasing by a factor of ∼50 per cent in 1.6 h, with no measurable lag between the 0.5–2 keV and 3–12 keV bands, consistent with much of the soft excess flux arising from reprocessing of the primary power-law component in the inner region of the accretion disc. We note, finally, that if the unusually steep power-law component is a result of Compton cooling of a disc corona by an intense soft photon flux, then the implication is that the bulk of these soft photons lie in the unobserved extreme ultraviolet.  相似文献

We estimate the power of relativistic, extragalactic jets by modelling the spectral energy distribution of a large number of blazars. We adopt a simple one-zone, homogeneous, leptonic synchrotron and inverse Compton model, taking into account seed photons originating both locally in the jet and externally. The blazars under study have an often dominant high-energy component which, if interpreted as due to inverse Compton radiation, limits the value of the magnetic field within the emission region. As a consequence, the corresponding Poynting flux cannot be energetically dominant. Also the bulk kinetic power in relativistic leptons is often smaller than the dissipated luminosity. This suggests that the typical jet should comprise an energetically dominant proton component. If there is one proton per relativistic electrons, jets radiate around 2–10 per cent of their power in high-power blazars and 3–30 per cent in less powerful BL Lacs.  相似文献

We report on the iron Kα line properties of a sample of Seyfert galaxies observed with the XMM‐Newton EPIC pn instrument. Using a systematic and uniform analysis, we find that complexity at iron‐K is extremely common in the XMM‐Newton spectra. Once appropriate soft X‐ray absorption, narrow 6.4 keV emission and associated Compton reflection are accounted for, ∼75% of the sample show an improvement when a further component is introduced. The typical properties of the broad emission are both qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with previous results from ASCA. The complexity is in general very well described by relativistic accretion disk models. In most cases the characteristic emission radius is constrained to be within ∼50R g, where strong gravitational effects become important. We find in about 1/3 of the sample the accretion disk interpretation is strongly favoured over competing models. In a few objects no broad line is apparent. We find evidence for emission within 6R g in only two cases, both of which exhibit highly complex absorption. Evidence for black hole spin based on the X‐ray spectra therefore remains tentative. We present analyses of the ASCA X-ray spectra of two Seyfert galaxies, Tololo 0109383 and ESO 138G1. In both cases, spectral fitting reveals two statistically acceptable continuum models: Compton reflection and partial covering. Both spectra have strong iron K lines, with equivalent widths greater than 1.5 keV. These large equivalent widths are suggestive of heavier obscuration than that directly indicated by the partial-covering models (  21023 cm-2),  with the actual column densities being 'Compton-thick' (i.e.   N H1.51024 cm-2).  We use the hard X-ray/[O  iii ] flux correlation for Seyferts and data from the literature to provide additional support for this hypothesis. Since Tololo 0109383 is known to have optical type 1 characteristics such as broad Balmer line components and Fe  ii emission, this result marks it as a notable object.  相似文献

We report on ROSAT HRI observations of the nearby powerful radio galaxies 3C 33 and 111, which both have detected optical hotspots. We find nuclear X-ray sources in both objects, but no X-ray emission from the hotspots. This confirms the presence of a high-energy cut-off in the spectrum of synchrotron-emitting electrons. Since these electrons necessarily scatter the synchrotron photons by the inverse Compton process, our upper limits on the X-ray fluxes of the hotspots allow us to set lower limits of a few nanotesla on their magnetic flux density, close to or greater than the fields implied by equipartition of energy between radiating particles and magnetic field.  相似文献

We report the first detection of a sharp spectral feature in a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy. Using XMM-Newton we have observed 1H     and find a drop in flux by a factor of more than 2 at a rest-frame energy of ∼ 7 keV without any detectable narrow Fe K α line emission. The energy of this feature suggests a connection with the neutral iron K photoelectric edge, but the lack of any obvious absorption in the spectrum at lower energies makes the interpretation challenging. We explore two alternative explanations for this unusual spectral feature: (i) partial-covering absorption by clouds of neutral material; and (ii) ionized disc reflection with lines and edges from different ionization stages of iron blurred together by relativistic effects. We note that both models require an iron overabundance to explain the depth of the feature. The X-ray light curve shows strong and rapid variability, changing by a factor of 4 during the observation. The source displays modest spectral variability which is uncorrelated with flux.  相似文献

We present an XMM–Newton observation of the bright, narrow-line, ultrasoft type 1 Seyfert galaxy Ton S180. The  0.3–10 keV  X-ray spectrum is steep and curved, showing a steep slope above 2.5 keV  (Γ∼ 2.3)  and a smooth, featureless excess of emission at lower energies. The spectrum can be adequately parametrized using a simple double power-law model. The source is strongly variable over the course of the observation but shows only weak spectral variability, with the fractional variability amplitude remaining approximately constant over more than a decade in energy. The curved continuum shape and weak spectral variability are discussed in terms of various physical models for the soft X-ray excess emission, including reflection off the surface of an ionized accretion disc, inverse Compton scattering of soft disc photons by thermal electrons, and Comptonization by electrons with a hybrid thermal/non-thermal distribution. We emphasize the possibility that the strong soft excess may be produced by dissipation of accretion energy in the hot, upper atmosphere of the putative accretion disc.  相似文献

We present a new population of radio quasars whose X-ray band, unlike previously known sources which have (flat) inverse Compton radiation, is characterized by (steep) synchrotron emission, with a broad-band spectral energy distribution similar to that of BL Lacs with high energy synchrotron peaks. We discuss how this new class was discovered, the class properties, and the implications of its existence for our understanding of jets and active galactic nuclei in general.  相似文献

We discuss the importance of feedback via photoionization and Compton heating on the co-evolution of massive black holes (MBHs) at the centre of spheroidal galaxies, and their stellar and gaseous components. We first assess the energetics of the radiative feedback from a typical quasar on the ambient interstellar medium (ISM). We then demonstrate that the observed   M BH–σ  relation could be established following the conversion of most of the gas of an elliptical progenitor into stars, specifically when the gas-to-stars mass ratio in the central regions has dropped to a low level  ∼0.01  or less, so that gas cooling is no longer able to keep up with the radiative heating by the growing central massive black hole (MBH). A considerable amount of the remaining gas will be expelled and both MBH accretion and star formation will proceed at significantly reduced rates thereafter, in agreement with observations of present-day ellipticals. We find further support for this scenario by evolving over an equivalent Hubble time a simple, physically based toy model that additionally takes into account the mass and energy return for the spheroid evolving stellar population, a physical ingredient often neglected in similar approaches.  相似文献

Recent work by Risaliti, Maiolino & Salvati suggests that more than half of all Seyfert 2 galaxies in the local Universe are Compton-thick ( N H>1024 cm−2). This has implications for AGN synthesis models for the X-ray background, the flexibility of which for the inclusion of large numbers of high- z type 2 sources we examine here. We highlight the importance of Compton down-scattering in determining the individual source spectra and the fit to the X-ray background spectrum, and demonstrate how parameter space 'opens up' considerably if a super-solar iron abundance is assumed for the absorbing material. This is illustrated with a model which satisfies the present constraints, but which predicts substantial numbers of type 2 sources at the faint flux levels soon to be probed for the first time by the Chandra and XMM missions. We demonstrate also how a strong negative K -correction facilitates the detection of sources with 10∼24 N H1025 cm−2 out to the highest redshifts at which they could plausibly exist.  相似文献

The fluorescent iron K α emission-line profile provides an excellent probe of the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei. Fe  xxv and Fe  xxvi in diffuse plasma above the accretion disc can affect the X-ray spectrum by iron K α resonant absorption. This in turn can influence the interpretation of the data and the estimation of the accretion disc and black hole parameters. We embark on a fully relativistic computation of this effect and calculate the iron line profile in the framework of a specific model in which rotating, highly ionized and resonantly absorbing plasma occurs close to the black hole. This can explain the features seen in the iron K α line profile recently obtained by Nandra et al. for the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. We show that the redshift of this feature can be mainly gravitational in origin and accounted for without the need to invoke fast accretion of matter on to the black hole. New X-ray satellites such as XMM , ASTRO-E and Chandra provide excellent opportunities to test the model against high-quality observational data.  相似文献

The fate of the cooling gas in the central regions of rich clusters of galaxies is not well understood. In one plausible scenario clouds of atomic or molecular gas are formed. However the mass of the cold gas, inferred from measurements of low-energy X-ray absorption, is hardly consistent with the absence of powerful CO or 21-cm emission lines from the cooling flow region. Among the factors which may affect the detectability of the cold clouds are their optical depth, shape and covering fraction. Thus, alternative methods to determine the mass in cold clouds, which are less sensitive to these parameters, are important.   For the inner region of the cooling flow (e.g. within a radius of ∼50–100 kpc) the Thomson optical depth of the hot gas in a massive cooling flow can be as large as ∼ 0.01. Assuming that the cooling time in the inner region is few times shorter than the lifetime of the cluster, the Thomson depth of the accumulated cold gas can be accordingly higher (if most of the gas remains in the form of clouds). The illumination of the cold clouds by the X-ray emission of the hot gas should lead to the appearance of a 6.4-keV iron fluorescent line, with an equivalent width proportional to τT. The equivalent width only weakly depends on the detailed properties of the clouds, e.g. on the column density of individual clouds, as long as the column density is less than a few 1023 cm−2. Another effect also associated exclusively with the cold gas is a flux in the Compton shoulder of bright X-ray emission lines. It also scales linearly with the Thomson optical depth of the cold gas. With the new generation of X-ray telescopes, combining large effective area and high spectral resolution, the mass of the cold gas in cooling flows (and its distribution) can be measured.  相似文献

We have calculated the equivalent widths of the absorption lines produced by Fe  xxv and Fe  xxvi in a Compton-thin, low-velocity photoionized material illuminated by the nuclear continuum in active galactic nuclei. The results, plotted against the ionization parameter and the column density of the gas, are a complement to those presented by Bianchi & Matt for the emission lines from the same ionic species. As an extension to the work by Bianchi & Matt, we also present a qualitative discussion on the different contributions to the He-like iron emission line complex in the regimes where recombination or resonant scattering dominates, providing a useful diagnostic tool to measure the column density of the gas. Future high-resolution missions (e.g. Astro-E2 ) will allow us to fully take advantage of these plasma diagnostics. In the meantime, we compare our results with an up-to-date list of Compton-thick and unobscured (at least at the iron line energy) Seyfert galaxies with emission and/or absorption lines from H- and He-like iron observed with Chandra and XMM–Newton .  相似文献
