The investigation of L g attenuation characteristics in the region bounding the western branch of the East African rift system using digital recordings from a seismic network located along the rift between Lake Rukwa and Lake Malawi is reported. A set of 24 recordings of L g waves from 12 regional earthquakes has been used for the determination of anelastic attenuation, Q Lg , and regional body-wave magnitude, m b Lg , scale. The events used have body-wave magnitudes, m b , between 4.6 and 5.5, which have been determined teleseismically and listed in ISC bulletins. The data were time-domain displacement amplitudes measured at 10 different frequencies (0.7–5.0  Hz). Q Lg and its frequency dependence, η , in the region can be represented in the form Q Lg = (186.2 ± 6.5)  f  (0.78±0.05). This model is in agreement with models established in other active tectonic regions. The L g -wave-based magnitude formula for the region is given by m b Lg = log   A + (3.76 ± 0.38)  log   D − (5.72 ± 1.06), where A is a half-peak-to-peak maximum amplitude of the 1  s L g wave amplitude in microns and D is the epicentral distance in kilometres. Magnitude results for the 12 regional earthquakes tested are in good agreement with the ISC body-wave magnitude scale.  相似文献

We explore a practical approach to earthquake early warning in southern California by determining a ground-motion period parameter  τ c   and a high-pass filtered displacement amplitude parameter Pd from the initial 3 s of the P waveforms recorded at the Southern California Seismic Network stations for earthquakes with M > 4.0. At a given site, we estimate the magnitude of an event from  τ c   and the peak ground-motion velocity ( PGV ) from Pd . The incoming three-component signals are recursively converted to ground acceleration, velocity and displacement. The displacements are recursively filtered with a one-way Butterworth high-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of 0.075 Hz, and a P -wave trigger is constantly monitored. When a trigger occurs,  τ c   and Pd are computed. We found the relationship between  τ c   and magnitude ( M ) for southern California, and between Pd and PGV for both southern California and Taiwan. These two relationships can be used to detect the occurrence of a major earthquake and provide onsite warning in the area around the station where onset of strong ground motion is expected within seconds after the arrival of the P wave. When the station density is high, the methods can be applied to multistation data to increase the robustness of onsite early warning and to add the regional warning approach. In an ideal situation, such warnings would be available within 10 s of the origin time of a large earthquake whose subsequent ground motion may last for tens of seconds.  相似文献

Summary . Vertical component Rayleigh-wave amplitudes from 1461 shallow earthquakes recorded in the distance range 0–150° are analysed to separate the effects of earthquake size, epicentral distance (Δ) and recording station.
The estimated decay of amplitude with distance has the form of a theoretical curve for the decay of Rayleigh waves with distance if the assumption is made that the decay due to dispersion for the data analysed is that of an Airy phase. Writing the decay due to anelastic attenuation as exp (- k Δ), k is estimated to be 0.676/rad over the whole range of distance. If the distance effects are represented by a straight line of the form h log Δ+ constant, h is estimated to be 1.15. The calibration function for computing M s derived from the estimated distance effects is very similar to that of Marshall & Basham.
Station effects on Rayleigh-wave amplitudes though statistically significant are small, and can probably be ignored in the computation of M s.
Comparing the estimated surface-wave magnitudes (earthquake size) obtained in this study with the long and short period body-wave magnitudes ( m LPb and m SPb respectively) obtained by Booth, Marshall & Young for the same earthquake shows that m LPb is about equal to M s over the magnitude range of interest (˜4.0–7.0). The m LPb and Ms relationship shows that the greater the long-period energy radiated by an earthquake the smaller proportionately is the short-period energy.  相似文献

Summary. Spectral analysis of P and P coda from NTS explosions recorded at NORSAR shows that magnitudes based on spectral integration of P coda provide a significantly more precise measure of yield than those based on the initial P . Coda amplitudes and spectra are considerably less sensitive to near-source variations than the direct P . A plot of P -coda magnitude, after correcting for the effects of attenuation in the upper mantle and the source spectrum based on knowledge of approximate yield or mb , versus log yield appears to have a slope of unity. This implies that P coda from several stations (with different but known t * values) can be combined to improve the yield determinations further. Single station P coda from Soviet explosions can also be used to determine relative yields that appear to be at least as precise as those from Lg based on a network of stations.  相似文献

Summary. More than seventy underground nuclear explosions detonated in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia have been detected on the short-period vertical Benioff seismograph at Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Early data suggested that the duration of the T -phase provides a better estimate of the magnitude of the events than does the amplitude, but with more data now available it has been shown that amplitude is in fact the more reliable parameter. Data prior to 1980 are more scattered than those since. This appears to be related to the substantially different station network in those early years, compared with the later period, and suggests some unreliability in early data. Station corrections have been extracted and improved estimates of the magnitudes of the events obtained.  相似文献

A massive vapour cloud explosion occurred at the Buncefield fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead, UK, in the morning of 2005 December 11. The explosion was the result of an overflow from one of the storage tanks with the release of over 300 tons of petrol and generating a vapour cloud that spread over an area of 80 000 m2, before being ignited. Considerable damage was caused in the vicinity of the explosion and a total of 43 people were injured. The explosion was detected by seismograph stations in the UK and the Netherlands and by infrasound arrays in the Netherlands. We analysed the seismic recordings to determine the origin time of 06:01:31.45 ±0.5 s (UTC) from P -wave arrival times. Uncertainties in determination of origin time from acoustic arrival times alone were less than 10 s. Amplitudes of P -, Lg and primary acoustic waves were measured to derive decay relationships as function of distance. From the seismic amplitudes we estimated a yield of 2–10 tons equivalent to a buried explosion. Most seismic stations recorded primary and secondary acoustic waves. We used atmospheric ray tracing to identify the various travel paths, which depend on temperature and wind speed as function of altitude, leading to directional variation. Refracted waves were observed from the troposphere, stratosphere and thermosphere with a good match between observed and calculated traveltimes. The various wave types were also identified through array processing, which provides backazimuth and slowness, of recordings from an infrasound array in the Netherlands. The amplitude of stratospheric refracted acoustic waves recorded by the array microbarometers was used to estimate a yield of 21.6 (±5) tons TNT equivalent. We have demonstrated through joint seismo-acoustic analysis of the explosion that both the seismic velocity model and the atmospheric model are sufficient to explain the observed traveltimes.  相似文献

In view of increasing damage due to earthquakes, and the current problems of earthquake prediction, real-time warning of strong ground motion is attracting more interest. In principle, it allows short-term warning of earthquakes while they are occurring. With warning times of up to tens of seconds it is possible to send alerts to potential areas of strong shaking before the arrival of the seismic waves and to mitigate the damage, but only if the seismic source parameters are determined rapidly. The major problem of an early-warning system is the real-time estimation of the earthquake's size.
We investigated digitized strong-motion accelerograms from 244 earthquakes that occurred in North and Central America between 1940 and 1986 to find out whether their initial portions reflected the size of the ongoing earthquake. Applying conventional methods of time-series analyses we calculate appropriate signal parameters and describe their uncertainties in relation to the magnitude and epicentral distance. The study reveals that the magnitude of an earthquake can be predicted from the first second of a single accelerogram within ±1.36 magnitude units. The uncertainty can be reduced to about ±0.5 magnitude units if a larger number (≥8) of accelerograms are available, which requires a dense network of seismic stations in areas of high seismic risk.  相似文献

Summary. Short period P -wave amplitudes at Soviet seismic stations are analysed to determine an amplitude–distance curve in the range 0°–180° from the USSR. Station amplitude terms, corrected for crustal amplification effects, are determined from seismic sources located between 30° and 90°. A relationship between these station terms and regional Pn wave speed and regional heat flow is determined and is found to be in close agreement with similar observations in North America. Station amplitude terms were found to be reasonably uniform across the continental portion of the USSR but the Baikal Rift valley is characterized by very low P -wave amplitudes and is the most significant feature discemible from the P -wave amplitude terms.  相似文献

Fundamental-mode Rayleigh and Love waves generated by several earthquakes situated along great-circle paths between pairs of seismograph stations have been analysed to obtain coefficients of attenuation, group velocities, phase velocities, and specific quality factors in the period range 18–80s in two regions of the South American continent. One set of paths crosses the shield region which lies on the eastern coast and another set traverses the mountainous region inland. the average attenuation coefficient values are clearly higher in the tectonically active western region throughout the entire period range than in the eastern or shield region.
Inversion of the attenuation data yielded shear wave internal friction ( Q -1β) models as a function of depth in the crust and upper mantle in both regions. A low- Q zone below the lithosphere is prominent in both regions. the results show that substantial variations of Q β occur in the two regions of South America. the Qβ values were found to be inversely related to the heat flow values or to the temperature.  相似文献

We investigate the particle orbits of long-period (about 20 s) P waves observed with the global seismic network. By analysing 84 three-component seismograms recorded at 25 stations from 60 earthquakes occurring beneath 300 km, we quantitatively evaluate the orbits by three sets of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, using a covariance matrix method. The eigenvalues for P waves recorded at stations located on continents are explained by the standard horizontal layered structure model (iasp91). On the other hand, the orbits observed at stations close to island arcs are affected not only by the horizontal layered structure but also by heterogeneity due to subducting plates, mantle diapirs and so on. On the basis of a single-scattering model for a plane P wave, we quantify the heterogeneities by an isotropic scattering coefficient g0. Fitting the theoretical eigenvalues to the observed ones, we estimate g0 for the crust and upper mantle beneath continents to be less than 0.0005 km-1, and the mean g0 for the structure beneath island arcs to be about 0.0015 to 0.003 km-1.  相似文献

Summary. This note presents an exact analytical formula for determining the magnitude of coseismic surface volume change (δ V ) of earthquake faults in a half-space. For a Poisson solid, the formula is remarkably simple; δ V = M zz |8μ, where M zz is one of the moment tensor elements of the source. Maximum δ V values derive from dip slip on faults plunging 45°. For these events, surface volume changes of 0.0001 and 4.3 km3 can be expected for magnitude 5 and 8 earthquakes respectively. All of the coseismic surface volume change is recovered in the interseismic period through relaxation of the Earth and rebound of the surface. A useful rule of thumb for estimating the magnitude of vertical rebound in 45° dip slip events is δ h p=Δ s /24, where Δ s is the coseismic slip on the fault.  相似文献

Shear-wave splitting is analysed on data recorded by the High Resolution Seismic Network (HRSN) at Parkfield on the San Andreas fault, Central California, during the three-year period 1988-1990. Shear-wave polarizations either side of the fault are generally aligned in directions consistent with the regional horizontal maximum compressive stress, at some 70° to the fault strike, whereas at station MM in the immediate fault zone, shear-wave polarizations are aligned approximately parallel to the fault. Normalized time delays at this station are found to be about twice as large as those in the rock mass either side. This suggests that fluid-filled cracks and fractures within the fault zone are elastically or seismically different from those in the surrounding rocks, and that the alignment of fault-parallel shear-wave polarizations are associated with some fault-specific phenomenon.
Temporal variations in time delays between the two split shear-waves before and after a ML = 4 earthquake can be identified at two stations with sufficient data: MM within the fault zone and VC outside the immediate fault zone. Time delays between faster and slower split shear waves increase before the ML = 4 earthquake and decrease near the time of the event. The temporal variations are statistically significant at 68 per cent confidence levels. Earthquake doublets and multiplets also show similar temporal variations, consistent with those predicted by anisotropic poroelasticity theory for stress modifications to the microcrack geometry pervading the rock mass. This study is broadly consistent with the behaviour observed before three other earthquakes, suggesting that the build-up of stress before earthquakes may be monitored and interpreted by the analysis of shear-wave splitting.  相似文献

Summary. Based on accurately located 23 very shallow earthquakes ( h = 1–14 km) in northern and central Greece by portable networks of seismic stations and by the joint epicentre method, the travel times of the Pn -waves from the foci of these earthquakes to the sites of 54 permanent stations in the Balkan region have been determined. The travel times of Pn -waves in the central and eastern part of the area (eastern Greece, south-eastern Yugoslavia, the Aegean Sea, Bulgaria, southern Romania, western Turkey) fit a straight line very well with the Pn velocity equal to 7.9 ± 0.1 km s-1. On the contrary, the travel times of Pn -waves to stations in the western part of the area (Albania, western Greece) do not fit this curve because the Pn -waves travelling to these stations are delayed by more than 1 s due to the thicker crust under the Dinarides–Hellenides mountain range. Time delays for Pn -waves have been calculated for each permanent station in the Balkan area with respect to the mean travel-time curve of these waves in the central and eastern part of the area. Corrections of the travel times for these delays contribute very much to the improvement of the accuracy in the location of the shallow earthquakes in the Aegean and surrounding area.  相似文献

Summary. It is well known that the time of occurrence of the minimum in the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field ( H min) on quiet days at a mid-latitude station on the poleward side of the Sq focus shows considerable variability from day to day. This variability has previously been discussed in terms of the incidence of so-called 'abnormal quiet days'(AQD), arbitrarily defined for the station Hartland as quiet days when H min occurred outside an interval of ± 2½ hr centred on the most common time of 1130 LT. AQDs have some interesting properties, which have been documented, but their precise nature and cause have not been elucidated. In this paper we report the results of a study of AQDs as identified at Hartland using a chain of Northern hemisphere stations situated approximately along the 0° longitude meridian and extending on both sides of the Sq focus. It is found that there are two effects on AQDs: (i) a northward component field varying in LT is superposed at all latitudes throughout the day, so reducing the amplitude of the normal Sq(H) variation at stations poleward of the focus and increasing it on the equatorward side, (ii) a southward perturbation field, of most probable magnitude 6.0 nT for the period studied, is imposed for about 4 hr at a fixed UT at all latitudes, so constituting an 'AQD event' which can lead to the occurrence of H min at an anomalous local time for a station poleward of the focus. It is shown that the AQD event may be of large geographical extent and that it is related to the interplanetary magnetic field. All the main properties of AQD occurrences are explained, and it is suggested that much of the day-to-day variability in the amplitude and phase of the normal Sq(H) variation probably also arises from the occurrence of AQD events at times close to the diurnal turning points.  相似文献

It has long been known that S waves on seismograms of local explosions are often accompanied by strong low-frequency, low-velocity, Rg surface wave trains, often significantly diminished for earthquakes. We utilize this fact to construct a new formal discriminator between earthquakes and explosions by measuring the S -surface-wave group velocity. The method is based on analysing the velogram; that is, the display of the envelope of ground motion versus group velocity V = R/T , where R is the epicentral distance and T  the traveltime. We examine the distribution of seismic energy in time and space using envelopes of records from the Israel Seismic Network (ISN), from which we compute the velograms and observe differences in the velograms of quarry blasts and earthquakes. The data include 143 seismic events occurring in three areas (Galilee, Dead Sea, and Gilad) monitored by the ISN; the magnitude range is M L = 1.0–2.8 at distances of 15–310 km. From the velograms we measure the group velocity, V m s , within the 1–4 km s1 range at which the velogram reaches its maximum for each available station. The resulting V m s (R) function is closely fitted by the empirical relationship a + b  ln  R , with a and b coefficients varying from event to event. A simple linear function c = b + 0.33a at a threshold C = 0.69 completely separates ( a,b ) pairs for the 67 Galilee events, and, for the 76 remaining events, one earthquake and four explosions are wrongly classified. After data validation and application of the Fisher linear discriminator, adapted to the events from Galilee, only two misidentified events remain for the whole data set.  相似文献

The ratio of shear to compressional travel times from a local earthquake gives a good estimate of the average velocity ratio for the wave path, providing the origin time has been moderately well determined. Thus changes of velocity ratio can be identified and mapped from standard observatory data. The method is applied to the principal New Zealand earthquakes since 1964: Gisborne, 1966, M L= 6. 2; Seddon, 1966, M L= 6.0; Inangahua, 1968, M L= 7.1. The results suggest that monitoring could be achieved with a station spacing of 100 km. It appears that velocity change is essentially a rapid process and that the return to normality may not begin until the earthquake is imminent.  相似文献

We investigate the propagation-efficiency characteristics of long-period (3-12 s) Lg waves in continental South America as recorded in the last few years on stations of the GTSN, IRIS/USGS, IRIS/IDA and GEOSCOPE networks. This paper reports the results of a first look at the available Lg data for events with M s > 5.0 from 1990 to 1995. In this period seven main seismic events and aftershocks along the length of the Andes produced a total of 29 usable paths from which preliminary results indicate that (1) long-period Lg waves are unusually prominent in seismograms of continental paths covering the shield areas of South America, and are clearly observed on broad-band instruments at epicentral distances exceeding 3500 km, (2) Lg propagation is substantially attenuated (weak or absent) for paths along the strike of the Andes and along the three active volcanic chains of Chile, Peru and Colombia, (3) away from the active volcanoes, the data show Lg propagating more efficiently across than along the strike of the Andes, and (4) in general, the ratio of the transverse to the vertical components of the Lg phase decreases with decreasing propagation efficiency.
These first results also raise a number of exciting questions regarding the exploration of the crustal waveguide in South America, such as the potential for Lg -based tomography to detect a postulated fossil plume in southeastern Brazil, or how the propagation efficiency of high-frequency Lg in volcanically active areas may be used to detect magma chambers. Consequently, we intend to carry out a systematic study of Lg in the continent as part of the ongoing Surface-wave Inversion for the South American Lithosphere (SISAL) project, a collaborative effort (Vdovin et al. 1996) to determine the crustal and lithospheric structure of the South American Plate from measurements of surface-wave dispersion in the period range 2–200 s.  相似文献

An isolated swarm of small earthquakes occurred in 1992, near Dongfang on Hainan Island, southern China. The Institute of Geophysics, State Seismological Bureau of China, monitored the swarm with five DCS-302 digital accelerometers for three months from 1992 June 1. 18 earthquakes, with magnitudes M L ranging from 1.8 to 3.6, were well located by five stations, and shear-wave splitting varying azimuthally was analysed on 27 seismic records from these events. The mean polarization azimuth of the faster shear wave was WNW. Time delays between the split shear waves at two stations varied with time and space. The time delays at one station fell abruptly after earthquakes of magnitudes 3.1 and 3.6, but did not change significantly at the second station. This behaviour is consistent with the delay-time changes being caused by changes in the aspect ratio of vertical liquid-filled (EDA) cracks. Thus, the variation in shear-wave-splitting time delay could be due to changes in crustal stress related to nearby small-magnitude earthquake activity. The connection between earthquake activity and crustal stress variation measured by shear-wave splitting leaves the door open for possible observations of crustal stress transients related to the onset of an earthquake; however, our data cannot be considered as definite evidence for such precursors.  相似文献

We propose a two-step inversion of three-component seismograms that (1) recovers the far-field source time function at each station and (2) estimates the distribution of co-seismic slip on the fault plane for small earthquakes (magnitude 3 to 4). The empirical Green's function (EGF) method consists of finding a small earthquake located near the one we wish to study and then performing a deconvolution to remove the path, site, and instrumental effects from the main-event signal.
The deconvolution between the two earthquakes is an unstable procedure: we have therefore developed a simulated annealing technique to recover a stable and positive source time function (STF) in the time domain at each station with an estimation of uncertainties. Given a good azimuthal coverage, we can obtain information on the directivity effect as well as on the rupture process. We propose an inversion method by simulated annealing using the STF to recover the distribution of slip on the fault plane with a constant rupture-velocity model. This method permits estimation of physical quantities on the fault plane, as well as possible identification of the real fault plane.
We apply this two-step procedure for an event of magnitude 3 recorded in the Gulf of Corinth in August 1991. A nearby event of magnitude 2 provides us with empirical Green's functions for each station. We estimate an active fault area of 0.02 to 0.15 km2 and deduce a stress-drop value of 1 to 30 bar and an average slip of 0.1 to 1.6 cm. The selected fault of the main event is in good agreement with the existence of a detachment surface inferred from the tectonics of this half-graben.  相似文献

Summary. Records of 21 earthquakes with ray paths crossing south-eastern China have been examined to establish the nature of propagation of the seismic wave Sn . Sn is seen at stations within 1500km of earthquakes, but not beyond 1500km. No single localized region of attenuation can account for all the missing or weak Sn waves. The inefficient propagation of Sn through south-eastern China is surprising in light of efficient Sn propagation in other continental platforms which, like south-eastern China, appear to have been stable throughout the Cenozoic.  相似文献
