Paleomagnetic data from 46 sites (674 specimens) of the Westcoast Crystalline Gneiss Complex on the west coast of Vancouver Island using AF and thermal demagnetization methods yields a high blocking temperature WCB component (> 560°C) with a pole at 335°W, 66°N (δp = 4°, δm = 6°) and a lower coercivity WCA component ( 25 mT, < 500°C) with a pole at 52°W, 79°N (δp = 7°, δm = 8°). Further thermal demagnetization data from 24 sites in the Jurassic Island Intrusions also defines two high blocking temperature components. The IIA component pole is at 59°W, 79°N (δp = 7°, δm = 8°) and IIB pole at 130°W, 73°N (δp = 12°, δm = 13°). Combined with previous data from the Karmutsen Basalts and mid-Tertiary units on Vancouver Island and from the adjacent Coast Plutonic Complex, the geotectonic motions are examined for the Vancouver Island segment of the Wrangellian Subterrane of composite Terrane II of the Cordillera. The simplest hypothesis invokes relatively uniform translation for Terrane II from Upper Triassic to Eocene time producing 39° ± 6° of northward motion relative to the North American craton, combined with 40° of clockwise rotation during the Lower Tertiary.  相似文献

The results of a detailed paleomagnetic study of a 68 m section of Upper Siwalik sediments in the Soan syncline, northern Pakistan, are presented. A palaeolithic artefact and other pieces of struck quartzite were found in situ in a gritstone/conglomerate horizon near the base of the section. Incremental thermal demagnetization was used to remove later magnetic overprints in these sediments, since alternating field demagnetization was shown to be inappropriate. With the exception of the lowest stratigraphic level, the Upper Siwalik sediments examined in the Riwat section show reverse polarity magnetization. The declination values are consistent with a 16° (±4°) counterclockwise rotation of the Soan syncline tectonic block since deposition of the sediments. On the basis of the palaeomagnetic analyses and the tectonic and stratigraphic context of the section, our current best estimate of the age of the artefact-bearing horizon is 2.0 ± 0.2Ma.  相似文献

We present new paleomagnetic results from the well dated Miyako Cretaceous sediments (100–110 Ma) from Northeast Japan. These results, combined with those of Tosha [1], yield an in-situ characteristic directionD = 321°,I = 54.5° (α95 = 4.5°),N = 14 sites; reduced to a reference point at 40°N, 142°E). This direction is found to coincide with that of most older plutonic and sedimentary rocks of Devonian to lower Cretaceous age. It is also identical with the westerly pre-folding direction which is preserved in many Oligocene (20–40 Ma) formations from Northeast Japan [1,2]. In contrast, all recent formations (0–17 Ma) have been magnetized in the direction of the present axial dipole field. Only the Oligocene and Miocene results appear to be primary, or at least pre-folding. The Miyako sulfide-bearing sediments and lower Cretaceous (110–125 Ma) magnetite-bearing granites could either still bear a primary magnetization or be completely remagnetized by a low temperature chemical event. Evidence for such events is now found in many places, and as close as South Korea. Available data constrain the Oligo-Miocene history of Northeast Japan and indicate at least20/30° counterclockwise rotation with respect to mainland Asia during the opening of the Sea of Japan. On the other hand, the pre-40 Ma history of Northeast Japan is not well constrained and three models are proposed which are compatible with various interpretations of the data. None of them can presently document pro-Oligocene motion of Northeast Japan with respect to Asia. The most “economical” model implies widespread remagnetization. We conclude that, because of the scarcity of well tested primary magnetization directions, the classical bending of the Japanese Islands rests on weaker grounds than generally realized and that no pre-40 Ma apparent polar wander path of the Japanese Islands can safely be proposed.  相似文献

Garnets in an amphibolite-facies metasediment from Sulitjelma, North Norway yield precise and concordant SmNd, UPb and RbSr ages that relate directly to the pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions of mineral growth. Differential mineral reaction between graphitic and non-graphitic layers within this sample preserves a record of theP-T and time (t) history experienced during Barrovian regional metamorphism. Garnets in graphitic layers grew during prograde metamorphism at462 ± 16°C and5.2 ± 0.5 kbar under conditions of lowaH2O, and yield indistinguishable147Sm143Nd and238U206Pb ages of434.1 ± 1.2 Ma and433.9 ± 1.0 Ma, respectively. In contrast, garnet growth in adjacent graphite-free layers did not occur untilP-T conditions of540 ± 18°C and8.0 ± 1.0 kbar were attained, with continued growth in response to minor heating and decompression with final matrix equilibration at544 ± 16°C and7.0 ± 1.0 kbar. The inclusion-free garnet rims in this assemblage record indistinguishable147Sm143Nd and238U206Pb ages of424.6 ± 1.2 Ma and423.4± 1.7 Ma, respectively. These results provide precise estimates for average heating and burial rates during prograde metamorphism of 8.6−4.4+7.5°C Ma−1 and 0.8−0.5+0.9 km Ma−1, respectively. Rb and Sr exchange between coexisting silicates in the graphite-free assemblage continued for some 37 Ma after the “peak” of metamorphism, and require an average cooling rate of about 4.0°C Ma−1 during uplift. These results illustrate a clear relationship between reaction history and the timing of mineral growth and provide definitive constraints on the rates of thermal and tectonic processes accompanying regional metamorphism.  相似文献

The Medina Wrenth in the central Mediterranean is a transform fault connecting the plate collision in northwest Africa and northern Sicily with that occurring at the Aegean plate boundary, south of Greece. The more than 800 km long crescent-shaped wrench zone is currently seismically quiet but exhibits major deformation since 5 Ma within a belt 30–100 km wide. It forms the southern boundary of two microplates moving eastward with respect to Africa and Europe. A simple plate rotation model constrained by recent paleomagnetic data indicates that a continental Iblean microplate and a hybrid continental/oceanic Ionian microplate, separated along the Malta Escarpment, have rotated anticlockwise by 11° and 12°, respectively, around poles in southern Italy. These rotations involved some 100 km of dextral eastward movement relative to Africa of the Ionian Basin north of the Medina Wrench since 5 Ma. Combining the published 26° clockwise rotation of the Peloponnesus and northwest half of the Aegean with the 12° anticlockwise rotation of the Ionian microplate results in (a) a 99% agreement between the length of the seismic Benioff Zone beneath Greece and the total convergence of the microplates, and (b) an average rate of convergence across the Aegean plate boundary southwest of the Peloponnesus of 6.6 ± 1cm a−1 since the Miocene. Relative motion between microplates in a collision zone thus may be as much as 6 times faster than convergence between the major plates which spawned them, and they can be considered rigid to the first order over the time span involved.  相似文献

The paleomagnetic data sets from the British Tertiary Igneous Province (BTIP) have recently been criticized as being unreliable and discordant with data from elsewhere in the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) [Riisager et al. Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 201 (2002) 261–276; Riisager et al. Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 214 (2003) 409–425]. We offer new paleomagnetic data for the extensive lava flow sequence on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, and can confirm the paleomagnetic pole positions emanating from important earlier studies. Our new north paleomagnetic pole position for Eurasia at 59 ± 0.2 Ma has latitude 73.3°N, longitude 166.2°E (dp/dm = 5.2/7.0).A re-evaluation and an inter-comparison of the paleomagnetic database emanating from the NAIP were carried out to test for sub-province consistency. We find a general agreement between the Eurasian part of NAIP (BTIP and Faeroes) and East Greenland data. However a compilation of West Greenland data displays a large and unexplained dispersion. We speculate on if this is related to different sense of block rotation of the Tertiary West Greenland constituents. Combining all data from the NAIP constituents, give a pole position at 75.0°N, 169.9°E (N = 25, K = 84.3, A95 = 3.2) in Eurasian reference frame.  相似文献

SmNd isotopic data indicate that differential REE mobility occurred on a whole-rock scale during transitional amphibolite- to granulite-facies regional metamorphism ( 700°C, 7 kbar) in early Archaean rocks ( 3930 Ma) of the Napier Complex of Enderby Land, Antarctica. The degree of mobility is independent of metamorphic grade but correlates directly with development of tectonic fabric. Whole-rock samples with D3-M3 internal fabrics lie along an array corresponding to an age of 2410 ± 100Ma, whereas samples preserving only earlier fabrics preserve an older, albeit imprecisely defined isochron age. In contrast to a widely held belief, such changes did not require the presence of a large hydrous fluid flux. If the mechanism responsible for SmNd resetting at this locality (where TCHUR ages range from 1990 Ma to 6090 Ma) is more widespread than is currently recognised, isolated SmNd model ages, particularly in complex terrains should be treated with caution.  相似文献

Peak amplitudes of surface strains during strong earthquake ground motion can be approximated by ε = Aνmax1, where νmax is the corresponding peak particle velocity, β1 is the velocity of shear waves in the surface layer, and A is a site specific scaling function. In a 50 m thick layer with shear wave velocity β1 300 m/s, A 0·4 for the radial strain εrr, A 0·2 for the tangential strain εrθ, and A 1·0 for the vertical strain, εz. These results are site specific and representative of strike slip faulting and of soil in Westmoreland, in Imperial Valley, California. Similar equations can be derived for other sites with known shear wave velocity profile versus depth.  相似文献

The present paper aims to synthesize results of a systematic paleomagnetic investigation performed on metamorphic, plutonic and volcanic series from the Central Massif. Detailed, thermal and alternating field demagnetizations yield a large set of paleomagnetic directions. Several groups of directions corresponding to different age intervals are identified. The group D mean direction: D = 288°, I = 57° (37°S, 110°E), characterizes Late Devonian/Early Carboniferous metamorphic and plutonic rocks from Limousin. The group C′ directions: D = 301°, I = 24° (30°S, 79°E), represent Late Visean/Namurian magnetizations, present in the major investigated areas. The group B directions: D = 249°, I = 7° (12°N, 111°E), exist not only in the whole Central Massif, but also in other Paleozoic outcrops of the Variscan belt. They were acquired during the Namurian/Westphalian. The group A′-A directions are the only typically “European” magnetic directions. They have taken place in Stephanian/Autunian times, mainly during the Kiaman reversed interval. Interpretation of these directions in terms of geodynamics leads to a probable large S-N drift of the massif during the Latest Devonian/Early Carboniferous followed by two important rotation phases, first in the Middle Carboniferous, then at the end of the Westphalian. These rotations have also affected other massifs of the Variscan belt.  相似文献

A paleomagnetic study of about 95 samples from 16 sites sampled in the Early Cretaceous in Luanping basin in Hebei Province was reported. Stepwise thermal demagnetization was used to isolate magnetic components. Most samples have a characteristic direction with a high temperature component above 500°C. The tectonic-corrected data areD = 347.8°,I = 50.4°, α95 = 7.l°, and the corresponding pole position is at 76.1°N, 346.3°E,with dp =6.4°,dm = 3.8°, paleolatitude λ = 31.1°N. This result indicates a counterclockwise post-Cretaceous rotation of 30.7° ±9.8° with respect to the stable Ordos basin in the west of North China Block, and a non-significant northward motion. This rotation could be related to local fault action or structural detachment, or regional NNW-NWWward motion and collision of Kula-Pacific plate with eastern China since the Early Cretaceous.

One hundred samples from nine sites in Upper Cretaceous volcanics (K/Ar age 85–99 m.y.) of the magmatic province of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Pernambuco (8.4°S, 35.0°W) yield a mean direction of magnetizationD = 0.4°, I = ?20.6°withα95 = 4.8°, k = 114 after AF cleaning. All sites have normal polarity with a mean pole, named SAK10, at 87.6°N, 135°E withA95 = 4.5° which is close to other Upper Cretaceous poles for South America. These poles are compared with Upper Cretaceous poles of Africa for various reconstructions of the two continents.  相似文献

The equilibrium distribution of CO2H2O fluids in synthetic rock samples (principally dunite and quartzite) has been characterized by measurements of the dihedral wetting angle, θ, resulting from 5-day annealing periods at 950–1150°C and 1 GPa. For fluids in equilibrium with polycrystalline quartz, θ varies systematically from 57° for pure H2O to 90° at XCO2 0.9. Similarly, for San Carlos olivine, θ varies from 65° for pure H2O to 90° at XCO2 0.9. The addition of solutes (NaCl, KCl, CaF2, Na2CO3) to H2O causes a major decrease in θ in the quartz/fluid system (to values as low as 40°), but has no effect on fluid wetting in dunite. Reconnaissance experiments on other mono- and polymineralic aggregates indicate universally high wetting angles (θ 60°) in upper mantle assemblages and for CO2 in felsic compositions. For diopside + H2O, θ 80°, with large variation due to crystalline anisotropy. In no case does θ approach 0°, the condition necessary for fluid to be present along all grain boundaries.Because a value of θ greater than 60° precludes the existence of an interconnected fluid phase in a rock, our results have important implications not only for fluid transport but also for the physical properties of the bulk fluid/rock system. Any static fluid present in the upper mantle must exist as isolated pores located primarily at grain corners, and transport can occur only by hydrofracture. In the continental crust, aqueous fluids (especially saline ones) are likely to form an interconnected network along grain edges, thus contributing to high electrical conductivity and allowing the possibility of fluid transport by porous flow or surface energy-driven infiltration.  相似文献

In view of the recent recognition of widespread Late Paleozoic remagnetization of Devonian formations across North America, we undertook a reinvestigation of the Upper Devonian Perry Formation of coastal Maine and adjacent New Brunswick. Thermal demagnetization of samples from the redbeds yielded a characteristic direction (D = 166°, I = 4°) that fails a fold test. Comparison of the corresponding paleopole (312°E, 41°S) with previously published Paleozoic poles for North America suggests that the sediments were remagnetized in the Late Carboniferous. After the removal of a steep, northerly component, the volcanics also reveal a shallow and southerly direction ( D = 171°, I = 25° without tilt correction). No stability test is available to date the magnetization of the volcanics; however, similarity of several of the directions to those seen in the sediments raises the suspicion that the volcanics are also remagnetized. Although the paleopole without tilt correction (303°E, 32°S) could be taken to indicate an early Carboniferous age for the remagnetization, scatter in the data suggests that the directions are contaminated by the incomplete removal of a steeper component due to present-day field. Thus, it is more likely that the volcanics were remagnetized at the same time as the sediments. Isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) acquisition curves, blocking temperatures, coercivities and reflected light microscopy indicate that the magnetization is carried by hematite in the sediments and by both magnetite and hematite in the volcanics. It is therefore likely that the remagnetization of the Perry Formation involved both thermal and chemical processes related to the Variscan/Alleghenian orogeny. Our results indicate that previously published directions for the Perry Formation were based on the incomplete resolution of two magnetic components. These earlier results can no longer be considered as representative of the Devonian geomagnetic field.  相似文献

Silica chimneys were discovered in 1985 at 86°W in the rift valley of the Galapagos Spreading Center at 2600 m depth (“Cauliflower Garden”). The inactive chimneys lack any sulfides and consist almost entirely of amorphous silica (up to 96 wt.% SiO2, opal-A); Fe and Mn oxides are minor constituents. Oxygen isotope data show that formation of the silica chimneys took place at temperatures between 32°C (+29.9‰ δ18O) and 42°C (+27.8‰ δ18O).Th/Udating reveals a maximum age of 1440 ± 300y. Amorphous silica solubility relations indicate that the silica chimneys were formed by conductive cooling of pure hydrothermal fluids or by conductive cooling of a fluid/seawater mixture. Assuming equilibrium with quartz at 500 bars, initial fluid temperatures of more than 175°C (i.e., a concentration of > 182 ppm SiO2) were required to achieve sufficient supersaturation for the deposition of amorphous silica at 40°C and 260 bars. If the silica chimneys originate from the same or a similar fluid as higher-temperature ( < 300°C) sulfide-silica precipitates found nearby (i.e., 2.5 km away), then subsurface deposition of sulfides may have occurred.  相似文献

Two organic maturity indices, the statistical thermal alteration index (stTAI) and vitrinite reflectance (RO), are used to gain insight into the geological histories of sequences of Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous sediments in northern Japan that contain an unconformity and which are affected by faulting and contact metamorphism. The stTAI is based on the brightness, or gray level, of fossil pollen of Pinus, Podocarpus, Abies, and Picea species. Pollen brightness is measured using a transmitted‐light microscope equipped with a computer‐driven digital image processor. The stTAI represents the mean value of the modes for the complete array of indigenous pollen in rock samples. The stTAI indicates the level of organic maturation for Neogene sedimentary rocks of Japan, from incipient diagenesis to early catagenesis (RO ≤1.0%). With the progressive diagenesis and catagenesis of sedimentary rocks, stTAI values generally show a progressive decrease, whereas RO values increase. The effects of an unconformity and faulting are more clearly recorded in stTAI trends than in RO trends. During early stages of organic maturation (RO ≤0.7%), stTAI shows a rapid decrease, while RO shows a rapid increase during the mature and post‐mature stages (RO ≥0.8%). The occurrence of a range in RO values for a given level of organic maturity makes it difficult to determine the influence of the unconformity on the increasing RO trend. RO values show a progressive increase toward an igneous dyke, but this trend is not apparent in stTAI values. Measurements of Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous rocks in Japan reveal that stTAI is more sensitive to heating duration than RO, although RO is more sensitive to heating temperature.  相似文献

Extensive Upper Cretaceous volcanism in southern Madagascar was fed in part by mantle sources resembling those expressed today in the Indian Ocean at Marion and Prince Edward islands and on the central Southwest Indian Ridge. In addition, very low εNd(T) (to −17.4), high(87Sr/86Sr)T (to 0.72126) tholeiites in southwestern Madagascar were variably but highly contaminated by ancient continental material broadly like that affecting the Bushe and Poladpur Formations of the later Deccan Traps in India. Alkalic dikes in southwestern Madagascar have a rough analogue in the Mahabaleshwar Formation of the Deccan, in that they document the influence of a low 206Pb/204Pb, negative εNd, relatively low 87Sr/86Sr reservoir. A very similar reservoir is manifested at present in mid-ocean ridge basalts on the central Southwest Indian Ridge near 40°E. The original location of this end-member appears likely to have been in the Madagascan lithospheric mantle, a portion of which may have been removed in the Middle Cretaceous by the action of the Marion hotspot or the rifting of Indo-Madagascar. An origin within the hotspot itself also may be possible; however, recent products of the hotspot appear to lack completely the necessary low 206Pb/204Pb, low εNd signatures.  相似文献

Paleomagnetic analysis of Cenozoic sediments from the Iblean platform (12 sites, 100 samples) has provided four new poles. These data are combined with those available from volcanic series to yield a new apparent polar wander path for “stable” Sicily since the Upper Cretaceous. This curve, when compared to a revised curve for Africa (using a selection of available data points), demonstrates a 15° rotation of Sicily with respect to Africa during the Plio-Pleistocene. This rotation accounts for the extensional tectonic regime that prevails in the Pelagian Sea and which is evidenced by “en relais” rifts (Malta, Pantelleria, Linosa), associated with alkaline volcanism of Pliocene and Quaternary age. Paleomagnetic directions from various areas of the Italian Peninsula also indicate anticlockwise rotations with diverse amplitudes. The chronology of these rotations is consistent with a deformation of the western Italian margin during progressive suturation from north to south of the Corsican-Sardinian block since the end of the Oligocene.  相似文献

Porcellanite has been found in Antarctic deep-sea sediments of shallow burial depth at four different sites in host sediments younger than 4 Ma. Oxygen isotope analysis shows that the opal-CT samples are extremely rich in18O (δ18O= 41.2to44.7‰ rel. SMOW). According to the quartz/water fractionation the calculated isotopic opal-CT formation temperature is in the range of 0 to 4°C. This agrees well with sediment temperature measurements. The low opal-CT precipitation temperature contrasts with current ideas about later diagenetic formation of opal-CT at higher temperatures of 18 to 56°C.  相似文献

The Platanares geothermal area in western Honduras consists of more than 100 hot springs that issue from numerous hot-spring groups along the banks or within the streambed of the Quebrada de Agua Caliente (brook of hot water). Evaluation of this geothermal area included drilling a 650-m deep PLTG-1 drill hole which penetrated a surface mantling of stream terrace deposits, about 550 m of Tertiary andesitic lava flows, and Cretaceous to lower Tertiary sedimentary rocks in the lower 90 m of the drill core.Fractures and cavities in the drill core are partly to completely filled by hydrothermal minerals that include quartz, kaolinite, mixed-layer illite-smectite, barite, fluorite, chlorite, calcite, laumontite, biotite, hematite, marcasite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and sphalerite; the most common open-space fillings are calcite and quartz. Biotite from 138.9-m depth, dated at 37.41 Ma by replicate 40Ar/39 Ar analyses using a continuous laser system, is the earliest hydrothermal mineral deposited in the PLTG-1 drill core. This mid-Tertiary age indicates that at least some of the hydrothermal alteration encountered in the PLTG-1 drill core occured in the distant past and is unrelated to the present geothermal system. Furthermore, homogenization temperatures (Th) and melting-point temperatures (Tm) for fluid inclusions in two of the later-formed hydrothermal minerals, calcite and barite, suggest that the temperatures and concentration of dissolved solids of the fluids present at the time these fluid inclusions formed were very different from the present temperatures and fluid chemistry measured in the drill hole.Liquid-rich secondary fluid inclusions in barite and caicite from drill hole PLTG-1 have Th values that range from about 20°C less than the present measured temperature curve at 590.1-m depth to as much as 90°C higher than the temperature curve at 46.75-m depth. Many of the barite Th measurements (ranging between 114° and 265°C) plot above the reference surface boiling-point curve for pure water assuming hydrostatic conditions; however, the absence of evidence for boiling in the fluid inclusions indicates that at the time the minerals formed, the ground surface must have been at least 80 m higher than at present and underwent stream erosion to the current elevation. Near-surface mixed-layer illite-smectite is closely associated with barite and appears to have formed at about the same temperature range (about 120° to 200°C) as the fluid-inclusion Thvalues for barite. Fluid-inclusion Th values for calcite range between about 136° and 213°C. Several of the calcite Th values are significantly lower than the present measured temperature curve. The melting-point temperatures (Tm) of fluid-inclusion ice yield calculated salinities, ranging from near zero to as much as 5.4 wt. % NaCl equivalent, which suggest that much of the barite and calcite precipitated from fluids of significantly greater salinity than the present low salinity Platanares hot-spring water or water produced from the drill hole.  相似文献
