Extensive and meticulous observations of the rotation curves of galaxies show that they are either flat or gently going up, but rarely decreasing, at large galactocentric distances. Here we show that the gravitational potential which would lead to such rotation curves arises naturally when the visible matter modelled as a collisionless Maxwellian gas is embedded in a dark halo of collisionless particles with a much higher dispersion in velocities.  相似文献

Purely gravitational perturbations are considered in a thin rotating disc composed of gas and several stellar components. The dispersion relation for the axisymmetric density waves propagating through the disc is found and the criterion for the local axisymmetric stability of the whole system is formulated. In the appropriate limit of two-component gas we confirm the findings of Jog & Solomon and extend consideration to the case when one component is collisionless. Gravitational stability of the Galactic disc in the solar neighbourhood based on the multicomponent instability condition is explored using recent measurements of the stellar composition and kinematics in the local Galactic disc obtained by the Hipparcos satellite.  相似文献

We study how the internal structure of dark halos is affected if cold dark matter particles are assumed to have a large cross section for elastic collisions. We identify a cluster halo in a large cosmological N-body simulation and resimulate its formation with progressively increasing resolution. We compare the structure found in the two cases in which dark matter is treated as collisionless or as a fluid. For the collisionless case, the overall ellipticity of the cluster, the central density cusp, and the amount of surviving substructure are all similar to those found in earlier high-resolution simulations. Collisional dark matter results in a cluster that is more nearly spherical at all radii, has a steeper central density cusp, and has less-but still substantial-surviving substructure. As in the collisionless case, these results for a "fluid" cluster halo are expected to carry over approximately to smaller mass systems. The observed rotation curves of dwarf galaxies then argue that self-interacting dark matter can only be viable if intermediate cross sections produce structure that does not lie between the extremes we have simulated.  相似文献

In the relativistic case, the dispersion equation of longitudinal oscillations in unmagnetized, collisionless and isotropic plasmas of fast electron distribution is derived from the longitudinal dielectric constant of plasma. The equation is analytically solved, and the long-wavelength and short-wavelength dispersion relations are obtained. Because of the discontinuity of the analytical dispersion curve, the dimensionless dispersion equation of longitudinal oscillations is numerically calculated to obtain the full dispersion curve of longitudinal oscillations in relativistic plasmas of fast electron distribution. Further more, by fitting the numerical solution, a simple functional expression of the dispersion curve is given in favor of applications. Finally, in the extremely relativistic case, the dispersion relation of fast electron distribution is compared with that of Maxwell distribution. It is shown that the two kinds of dispersion relations have similar properties in a certain range of wave numbers.  相似文献

Dispersion relations are obtained and analysed for a non-uniform, non-rotating gravitational system. A restriction to short wavelengths makes it possible to consider a linearized form of the collisionless Boltzmann equation, differing from that for homogeneous systems by the appearance of a term expressing the effect of the mean self-gravitational field upon the motion. The mean field affects the radially directed wave perturbations, with a breaking of symmetry. Inwardly and outwardly directed modes have quite different propagation characteristics, inward modes being preferentially propagated. Locally, the stability of the system is found to be enhanced due to the effect of the mean field.  相似文献

By employing the anisotropic plasma distribution function, the stability of circularly polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves is studied in a relativistically hot electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasma, investigating two specific scenarios. First, linear dispersion relations associated with the transverse EM waves are analyzed in different possible frequency regimes. The expression of the aperiodic hydrodynamic instability is obtained and numerically the transverse EM modes are shown to grow exponentially. Secondly, we have found that the transverse electromagnetic wave interact with a collisionless anisotropic e-p-i plasma and damp through the nonlinear Landau damping phenomena. Taking the effects of the latter into consideration, a kinetic nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived with local and nonlocal nonlinearities, computing the damping rates. The present work should be helpful to understand the linear and nonlinear properties of the intense EM waves in hot relativistically astrophysical plasmas, e.g., pulsars, black holes, neutron stars, etc.  相似文献

A theoretical investigation is carried out for the nonlinear properties of small amplitude electron acoustic solitary waves (EAWs) in an unmagnetized collisionless plasma consisting of a cold electron fluid and hot electrons obeying κ velocity distribution, and stationary ions. The Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation that contains the lowest-order nonlinearity and dispersion is derived from the lowest order of perturbation and a linear inhomogeneous (KdV-type) equation that accounts for the higher-order nonlinearity and dispersion is obtained. A stationary solution for equations resulting from higher-order perturbation theory has been found using the renormalization method. The effects of the spectral index κ and the higher-order corrections are found to significantly change the properties (viz. the amplitude, width, electric field ) of the EASWs. A comparison with the Viking Satellite observations in the dayside auroral zone are also discussed.  相似文献

Properties of fully nonlinear electron-acoustic solitary waves in an unmagnetized and collisionless electron-positron-ion plasma containing cold dynamical electrons, superthermal electrons and positrons obeying Cairns’ distribution have been analyzed in the stationary background of massive positive ions. A linear dispersion relation has been derived, from which it is found that even in the absence of superthermal electrons, the superthermal positron component can provide the restoring force to the cold inertial electrons to excite electron-acoustic waves. Moreover, superthermal electron and positron populations seem to enhance the electron acoustic wave phase speed. For nonlinear analysis, Korteweg-de Vries equation is obtained using the reductive perturbation technique. It is found that in the presence of positron both hump and dip type solitons appear to excite. The present work may be employed to explore and to understand the formation of electron acoustic soliton structures in the space and laboratory plasmas with nonthermal electrons and positrons.  相似文献

Using the Viking Satellite observations data in the dayside auroral zone, a theoretical investigation is carried out for contribution of the higher-order nonlinearity to nonlinear obliquely electron-acoustic solitary waves (EASWs) in a magnetized collisionless plasma consisting of a cold electron fluid and non-thermal hot electrons obeying a non-thermal distribution, and stationary ions. A Zakharov–Kuznetsov (ZK) equation that contains the lowest-order nonlinearity and dispersion is derived from the lowest order of perturbation and a linear inhomogeneous (ZK-type) equation that accounts for the higher-order nonlinearity and dispersion is obtained. A stationary solution for equations resulting from higher-order perturbation theory has been found using the renormalization method. The effects of the external magnetic field and the obliqueness are found to significantly change the higher-order properties (viz. the amplitude, width, electric field and energy) of the EASWs. The effect of higher-order nonlinearity on the amplitude and width of the soliton are also discussed. A comparison with the Viking Satellite observations in the dayside auroral zone are taken into account.  相似文献

This paper discusses the development of two-stream instability in a collisionless plasma. The plasma is described by velocity moments of Vlasov equation where heat flow tensor has been neglected. A dispersion relation for arbitrary propagation is derived for a collisionless electron fluid. Special cases of propagation parallel and perpendicular to the field lines are discussed. Growth rate is computed for parameters representative of the shear layers of solar wind at one AU. It is found that the shear layers are likely to be overstable.  相似文献

The density, parallel and perpendicular pressures and temperatures distributions of a collisionless thermal plasma trapped in a dipole magnetic field are described and discussed. The effect of rotation on the plasma distribution is illustrated. The relative population of the different types of trapped particles is shown to influence drastically the temperature anisotropy of the cold plasma in the ion-exosphere. The total contents of mass, potential energy and kinetic energy in the magnetic flux tubes are estimated.  相似文献

The CrossScale mission will advance our understanding of fundamental plasma processes in collisionless plasmas. It will exploit the excellent natural plasma laboratory provided by the Earth’s magnetosphere and the near-Earth solar wind and, in particular, carry out multi-scale studies that will strongly complement plasma studies in ground-based laboratories. Previous studies of collisionless plasmas in space environments across the solar system have shown the ubiquitous nature of suprathermal particles and that these particles exhibit a power-law energy spectrum. In this paper we discuss the great significance of these suprathermal particles for CrossScale studies. We show that the presence of these particles is a natural consequence of the collisionless regime as they can propagate across the heliosphere with little spectral change and are not thermalised by collisions. They are a key indicator of the non-equilibrium nature of collisionless plasmas and an important source of free energy that can drive plasma processes. We discuss how these suprathermal particles influence the overall properties of the plasma. In particular, the energy distribution of particles follows a Kappa, rather than Maxwellian, distribution and thus the plasma does not have a single thermodynamic temperature. We also discuss the importance of the suprathermal tail as a tool to diagnose the processes responsible for particle energisation in collisionless plasmas. Such energisation is a common feature in collisionless plasmas, especially in terms of the primary science targets for CrossScale: reconnection, shocks and turbulence. Finally we also touch on the value of using CrossScale studies to provide ground truth measurements for a number of astrophysical techniques that exploit the effects of energetic electrons in the distant universe. Throughout the paper, we stress that suprathermal (30 keV-1 MeV) measurements are essential to fully characterise particle distributions. We show that such measurements will benefit greatly from the improved spatial and temporal resolution (compared to Cluster) that is proposed for the HEP instrument on CrossScale.  相似文献

Electron-acoustic waves are studied with orbital angular momentum (OAM) in an unmagnetized collisionless uniform plasma, whose constituents are the Boltzmann hot electrons, inertial cold electrons and stationary ions. For this purpose, we employ the fluid equations to obtain a paraxial equation in terms of cold electron density perturbations, which admits both the Gaussian and Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam solutions. Furthermore, an approximate solution for the electrostatic potential problem is found, which also allows us to express the components of the electric field in terms of LG potential perturbations. Calculating the energy flux of the electron-acoustic waves, an OAM density for these waves is obtained. Numerically, it is found that the parameters, such as, azimuthal angle, radial and angular mode numbers, and the beam waist strongly modify the LG potential profiles associated with electron-acoustic waves. The present results should be helpful to study the trapping and transportation of plasma particles and energy as well as to understand the electron-acoustic mode excitations produced by the Raman backscattering of laser beams in a uniform plasma.  相似文献

Wave propagation is considered in self-gravitating collisionless magnetized plasma, when the Larmor frequency exceeds the plasma frequency. The external magnetic field is assumed to be strong and a modified two-fluids theory is used to describe the plasma. We find that there are three modes of wave propagation parallel to the magnetic field. The condition of hose instability is affected. The change in the dispersion relation due to the two-fluids theory is also discussed.  相似文献

The particle aspect approach is adopted to investigate the trajectories of charged particles in the electromagnetic field of kinetic Alfven wave. Expressions are found for the dispersion relation, damping rate and associated currents in homogenous plasma. Kinetic effects of electrons and ions are included to study kinetic Alfven wave because both are important in the transition region. It is found that the ratio β of electron thermal energy density to magnetic field energy density and the ratio of ion to electron thermal temperature (Ti/Te) affect the dispersion relation, damping-rate and associated currents in both cases (warm and cold electron limits). The treatment of kinetic Alfven wave instability is based on the assumption that the plasma consists of resonant and non-resonant particles. The resonant particles participate in an energy exchange process, whereas the non-resonant particles support the oscillatory motion of the wave.  相似文献

The stability of a contact discontinuity in a collisionless plasma is examined. It is shown that the discontinuity can become unstable when the pressure component normal to the magnetic field is not continuous across the discontinuity. Even when the system is unstable, the growth rates are very small and unimportant in the context of wave propagation, except when the propagation is almost normal to the field. The instability could, however, lead to the slow dissipation of contact discontinuities in the solar wind and in the day side of the cusp region of the solar wind-magnetosphere boundary.  相似文献

Linear stability of a system of stars, gas and magnetic fields under the existence of a relative motion between the stars and the gas is investigated by the use of the magnetohydrodynamic and the polytropic equations for the gas and the collisionless Boltzmann equation for the stars together with the Poisson equation. The star system is supposed to have the anisotropic Schwarzschild distribution. The critical wavenumber is calculated and it is found that the system becomes universally unstable under some conditions.  相似文献

The macroscopic electric fields in the magnetosphere originate from internal as well as external sources. The fields are intimately coupled with the dynamics of magnetospheric plasma convection. They also depend on the complicated electrical properties of the hot, collisionless plasma. Macroscopic electric fields are responsible for some important kinds of energization of charged particles that take place in the magnetosphere and affect not only particles of auroral energy but also, by multistep processes, trapped high-energy particles.A particularly interesting feature of magnetospheric electric fields is the fact that they can have substantial components along the geomagnetic field. Several physical mechanisms have been identified by which such electric fields can be supported even when collisions between particles are negligible. Comments are made on the magnetic-mirror effect, anomalous resistivity, collisionless thermoelectric effect and electric double layers, emphasizing key features and differences and their significance in the light of recent observational data.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May, 1978.Reprinted, with due permission fromRev. Magnetohydrodynamic waves in a high β, collisionless plasma with smooth variations in plasma parameters across the boundary is studied. The heating of collisionless plasma is analyzed in one dimension, including the effects of shear magnetic field and compressibility of plasma. Energy absorption rate and dispersion relation between central plasma, surrounded by tenuous plasma have also been derived.  相似文献
