The paper presents simulations of the energetic neutral atom (ENA) production in the Mercury magnetosphere and the obtained ENA images for the equatorial and polar vantage points. The ENA fluxes are found to be 102–103 (cm2 srskeV)−1 and up to 104–105 (cm2 srskeV)−1 in the energy range 10–50 keV. Due to the small size of the magnetosphere, the particles injected in the tail can fill up the entire dayside magnetosphere making possible ENA imaging of the magnetospheric shape. The high variability of the Hermean magnetosphere gives rise to pulsating ENA emissions (ENA “flashes”) which can be used to study the global dynamics. The ENA instrument requirements, 10°×10° angular resolution and 20 s accumulation time, can be easily met by modern ENA instrumentation. Therefore, ENA imaging of the Mercury magnetosphere is feasible.  相似文献

The feasibility of neutral atom detection and imaging in the Hermean environment is discussed in this study. In particular, we consider those energetic neutral atoms (ENA) whose emission is directly related to solar wind entrance into Mercury's magnetosphere. In fact, this environment is characterised by a weak magnetic field; thus, cusp regions are extremely large if compared to the Earth's ones, and intense proton fluxes are expected there. Our study includes a model of H+ distribution in space, energy and pitch angle, simulated by means of a single-particle, Monte-Carlo simulation. Among processes that could generate neutral atom emission, we focus our attention on charge-exchange and ion sputtering, which, in principle, are able to produce directional ENA fluxes. Simulated neutral atom images are investigated in the frame of the neutral particle analyser-ion spectrometer (NPA-IS) SERENA experiment, proposed to fly on board the ESA mission BepiColombo/MPO. The ELENA (emitted low-energy neutral atoms) unit, which is part of this experiment, will be able to detect such fluxes; instrumental details and predicted count rates are given.  相似文献

During the first and second Mercury flyby the MESSENGER spacecraft detected a dawn side double-current sheet inside the Hermean magnetosphere that was labeled the “double magnetopause” (Slavin, J.A. et al. [2008]. Science 321, 85). This double current sheet confines a region of decreased magnetic field that is referred to as Mercury’s “dayside boundary layer” (Anderson, M., Slavin, J., Horth, H. [2011]. Planet. Space Sci.). Up to the present day the double current sheet, the boundary layer and the key processes leading to their formation are not well understood. In order to advance the understanding of this region we have carried out self-consistent plasma simulations of the Hermean magnetosphere by means of the hybrid simulation code A.I.K.E.F. (Müller, J., Simon, S., Motschmann, U., Schüle, J., Glassmeier, K., Pringle, G.J. [2011]. Comput. Phys. Commun. 182, 946–966). Magnetic field and plasma results are in excellent agreement with the MESSENGER observations. In contrast to former speculations our results prove this double current sheet may exist in a pure solar wind hydrogen plasma, i.e. in the absence of any exospheric ions like sodium. Both currents are similar in orientation but the outer is stronger in intensity. While the outer current sheet can be considered the “classical” magnetopause, the inner current sheet between the magnetopause and Mercury’s surface reveals to be sustained by a diamagnetic current that originates from proton pressure gradients at Mercury’s inner magnetosphere. The pressure gradients in turn exist due to protons that are trapped on closed magnetic field lines and mirrored between north and south pole. Both, the dayside and nightside diamagnetic decreases that have been observed during the MESSENGER mission show to be direct consequences of this diamagnetic current that we label Mercury’s “boundary-layer-current“.  相似文献

The integral photometric properties of Mercury and the Moon were studied, and the similarities in the reflectance characteristics of small surface areas determined by centimeter-sized irregularities were found. The relations obtained were used to pattern the surface of the Hermean soil on a specified scale. In a first approximation, the resulting image shows the character of the photometric relief of Mercury and the fine-grained structure of the surface in a range of phase angles, where the shadow function of centimeter-sized irregularities most affects the brightness of the mantle material. Probable variations of the photometric-relief types were revealed in processing the images selected from a series obtained from the Mariner 10 flyby. According to the data analysis, three main types of photometric relief were distinguished, which correspond to different morphological types of the Hermean surface formations. The relationship between the morphological types and the properties of the surface structure of the Hermean mantle material was revealed via morphological studies.Translated from Astronomicheskii Vestnik, Vol. 38, No. 6, 2004, pp. 504–512.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Molodensky  相似文献

The latest measurements from the two encounters of the MESSENGER spacecraft in year 2008 have discovered several interesting features of the magnetosphere of Mercury. We have performed high-resolution 3D hybrid model calculations to simulate the solar wind interaction with the Hermean magnetosphere during the first two Mercury encounters of the MESSENGER spacecraft in 2008. It is found that the global structure of the Hermean magnetosphere is significantly controlled by the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field. The bow shock size and shape and the magnetotail configuration have very large differences in these two encounters with northward-pointing and southward-pointing interplanetary magnetic field, respectively. Comparisons are also given with the observed magnetic field profiles and the computational results. In general, good agreement can be found including the interesting feature of the relatively thick magnetopause current layer at outbound measurements. Our work shows that 3D hybrid simulation is a promising method to study in detail the Hermean magnetosphere in parallel with the post-MOI observations of the MESSENGER spacecraft and the Bepi-Colombo mission in future.  相似文献

Analytical models of the Hermean exosphere for specific surface processes are described here. A numerical, Monte-Carlo model, for separately describing ion-sputtering, photon stimulated and thermal desorption from the surface of Mercury, is used to determine the trajectories of ejected particles, calculated by using the full equation of motion. These are accumulated into a matrix to obtain the spatial and energy distributions of atmospheric particles, assuming uniform surface concentration of the ejecta. Then, analytical models are obtained by fitting the numerical data with parametric functions. We focus on the effect of those physical quantities that are not well constrained in describing the role of the source processes, and on the global loss from the planet. Hence, we run several numerical simulations with different values of the source-associated physical quantities, studying the effect on the morphology of the exosphere for the various analytical-model parameters. In this way, it is possible to model the exosphere of Mercury, for each source separately, when different source configurations are involved. Moreover, we can investigate the role of each physical source quantity separately. This study shows possible strong variations in the Hermean exospheric profiles; hence, it demonstrates the importance of taking into account different surface or external conditions while modelling the Hermean exosphere.  相似文献

Mercury is the little known innermost terrestrial planet. A number of significant questions remain unanswered. We describe areas in which a compact imaging X-ray spectrometer could make a valuable contribution. It can provide high quality spectroscopic analysis of Mercury, using the fluorescence technique. A solar monitor is required to provide the calibration of the illumination necessary to produce a global map of absolute Hermean elemental abundances. In the case of Mercury studies of the surface and the magnetosphere form a single linked problem. The intense level of the radiation observed by Mariner 10 suggests that the auroral zone, where the energetic radiation interacts with the surface, is a potential intense source of X-rays. We estimate the fluxes. The solar wind may also contribute to X-ray generation, if it can reach the surface during highly excited periods. We describe briefly the instrument characteristics that could produce these observations.  相似文献

Abstract— The plasma environment at Mercury is a rich laboratory for studying the interaction of the solar wind with a planet. Three primary populations of ions exist at Mercury: solar wind, magnetospheric, and pickup ions. These pickup ions are generated through the ionization of Mercury's exosphere or are sputtered particles from the Mercury surface. A comprehensive mission to Mercury, such as MESSENGER (MErcury: Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, Ranging), should include a sensor that is able to determine the dynamical properties and composition of all these plasma components. An instrument to measure the composition of these ion populations and their three‐dimensional velocity distribution functions must be lightweight, fast, and have a very large field of view. The fast imaging plasma spectrometer (FIPS) is an imaging mass spectrometer, part of NASA's MESSENGER mission, the first Mercury orbiter. This versatile instrument has a very small footprint, and has a mass that is ?1 order of magnitude less than other comparable systems. It maintains a nearly full‐hemisphere field of view, suitable for either spinning or three‐axis‐stabilized platforms. The major piece of innovation to enable this sensor is a new deflection system geometry that enables a large instantaneous (?1.5π) field of view. This novel electrostatic analyzer system is then combined with a position sensitive time‐of‐flight system. We discuss the design and prototype tests of the FIPS deflection system and show how this system is expected to address one key problem in Mercury science, that of the nature of the radar‐bright regions at the Hermean poles.  相似文献

We use a global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model to simulate Mercury's space environment for several solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions in anticipation of the magnetic field measurements by the MESSENGER spacecraft. The main goal of our study is to assess what characteristics of the internally generated field of Mercury can be inferred from the MESSENGER observations, and to what extent they will be able to constrain various models of Mercury's magnetic field generation. Based on the results of our simulations, we argue that it should be possible to infer not only the dipole component, but also the quadrupole and possibly even higher harmonics of the Mercury's planetary magnetic field. We furthermore expect that some of the crucial measurements for specifying the Hermean internal field will be acquired during the initial fly-bys of the planet, before MESSENGER goes into orbit around Mercury.  相似文献

A series of observations of Mercury were performed at the Special Astrophysical Observatory using the short-exposure method to image a hitherto unknown part of the Hermean surface. Several thousand electronic frames of the planet were taken during its morning elongation in the period from November 20–24, 2006. The phase angle of Mercury varied from 103° to 80°, and the interval of planetocentric longitudes observed spanned from 260 to 350°W. Observations were made with a CCD camera attached to the 1-m Zeiss-1000 Ritchey-Chretien telescope operating with a KS-19 filter (short-wavelength border at 700 nm). The Hermean surface is known to be almost impossible to resolve on ordinary images. A reduction of a large number of frames taken with millisecond-long exposures made it possible to obtain a rather sharp image of the observed part of the Hermean surface. One of the primary aims of new observations was to have a general outline of the basin earlier found by one of the authors (L. Ksanfomaliti). We are the first to image this giant feature. The size of its inner part exceeds that of the largest lunar Mare — Mare Imbrium, however, unlike the latter the studied basin is of impact origin. The synthesized images reveal a number of large impact craters of various ages, as well as smaller features. The highest resolution achieved corresponds to the diffraction limit for the instrument employed, or about 100 km on the Hermean surface.  相似文献

On the basis of the data from ground-based polarimetric, photometric, and other observations, as well as from space measurements (Mariner 10), we survey the investigations of the properties and peculiarities of Mercury's regolith in detail. We also present the results of our own observations performed during three apparitions of the planet in 2000–2002. An analysis of the published data points to essentially more intensive maturation processes in the Hermean surface regolith compared to that on the lunar surface. In addition, the orbital characteristics of Mercury allow us to suppose that the intensity of its regolith maturation and, therefore, the optical properties of its surface can noticeably depend on the planetocentric longitude. Polarimetric observations of Mercury's surface (the planetocentric longitude range was 265°–330°) carried out in 2000–2002 with a 70-cm reflector actually detected a polarization degree varying with an amplitude of about 1.5%. To ascertain the nature of these variations, additional observations of Mercury in a maximally wide range of planetocentric longitudes of the viewed surface are required.  相似文献

The BepiColombo space mission is one of the European Space Agency's cornerstone projects; it is planned for launch in 2013 to study the planet Mercury. One of the imaging instruments of BepiColombo is a STereo Camera (STC), whose main scientific objective is the global stereo mapping of the entire surface of Mercury. STC will permit the generation of a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of Mercury's surface, improving the interpretation of morphological features at different scales and clarifying the stratigraphic relationships between different geological units. To evaluate the effectiveness of the STC-derived DTM for geological purposes, a series of simulations has been performed to find out to what extent the errors expected in the DTM may prevent the correct classification and interpretation of geological features. To meet this objective, Earth analogues (a crater, a lava cone and an endogenous dome) of likely components of the Hermean surface, small enough to be near the detection limit of the STC, were selected and a photorealistic three-dimensional (3D) model of each feature was generated using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) stereo images. Stereoscopic pairs of synthetic images of each feature were then generated from the 3D model at different locations along the BepiColombo orbit. For each stereo pair, the corresponding Hermean DTM was computed using image correlation and compared to the reference data to assess the loss of detail and interpretability. Results show that interpretation and quantitative analysis of simple craters morphologies and small volcanic features should be possible all along the periherm orbit arc. At the apoherm only the larger features can be unequivocally distinguished, but they will be reconstructed to a poor approximation.  相似文献

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is believed to be an important means for the transfer of energy, plasma, and momentum from the solar wind into planetary magnetospheres, with in situ measurements reported from Earth, Saturn, and Venus. During the first MESSENGER flyby of Mercury, three periodic rotations were observed in the magnetic field data possibly related to a Kelvin-Helmholtz wave on the dusk side magnetopause. We present an analysis of the event, along with comparisons to previous Kelvin-Helmholtz observations and an investigation of what influence finite ion gyro radius effects, believed to be of importance in the Hermean magnetosphere, may have on the instability. The wave signature does not correspond to that of typical Kelvin-Helmholtz events, and the magnetopause direction does not show any signs of major deviation from the unperturbed case. There is thus no indication of any high amplitude surface waves. On the other hand, the wave period corresponds to that expected for a Kelvin-Helmholtz wave, and as the dusk side is shown to be more stable than the dawn side, we judge the observed waves not to be fully developed Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, but they may be an initial perturbation that could cause Kelvin-Helmholtz waves further down the tail.  相似文献

We employ Mariner 10 measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field in the vicinity of Mercury to estimate the rate of magnetic reconnection between the interplanetary magnetic field and the Hermean magnetosphere. We derive a time-series of the open magnetic flux in Mercury's magnetosphere, from which we can deduce the length of the magnetotail. The length of the magnetotail is shown to be highly variable, with open field lines stretching between 15RH and 850RH downstream of the planet (median 150RH). Scaling laws allow the tail length at perihelion to be deduced from the aphelion Mariner 10 observations.  相似文献

To explore the dynamics of a test particle in the near-Mercury’s environment, the orbital motion of an orbiter around Mercury is considered. Different perturbing forces, namely the Mercurian gravity field, the solar radiation pressure, the solar wind and the coronal mass ejections, are taken into account. The order of magnitude of each perturbing term is assessed. The equations of motion in canonical representation are obtained. The Hamiltonian in terms of Hansen coefficients is expressed. A procedure for solution is presented. The short and long periodic terms are removed from the Hamiltonian and the solution is obtained. Long periodic perturbations on the orbital dynamics of an orbiter around Mercury due to the solar events are found as revealed by Eq. (26) in the text. Resonance cases are discussed and the different resonant inclinations are obtained. A procedure for the computation of the position and velocity is presented.  相似文献

In the framework of the space missions to Mercury, an accurate model of rotation is needed. Librations around the 3:2 spin-orbit resonance as well as latitudinal librations have to be predicted with the best possible accuracy. In this paper, we use a Hamiltonian analysis and numerical integrations to study the librations of Mercury, both in longitude and latitude. Due to the proximity of the period of the free libration in longitude to the orbital period of Jupiter, the 88-day and 11.86-year contributions dominate Mercury’s libration in longitude (with the Hermean parameters chosen). The amplitude of the libration in latitude is much smaller (under 1 arcsec) and should not be detected by the space missions. Nevertheless, we point out that this amplitude could be much larger (up to several tens of arcsec) if the free period related to the libration in latitude approaches the period of the Jupiter-Saturn Great Inequality (883 years). Given the large uncertainties on the planetary parameters, this new resonant forcing on Mercury’s libration in latitude should be borne in mind.  相似文献

Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) are formed when singly charged magnetospheric ions undergo charge exchange collisions with exospheric neutral atoms. The energy of the incident ions is almost entirely transferred to the charge exchange produced ENAs, which then propagate along nearly rectilinear ballistic trajectories. Thus the ENAs can be used like photons in order to form an image of the energetic ion distribution. The Cassini spacecraft is equipped with the Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA), a magnetospheric imaging ENA camera which is part of MIMI (Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument) [Mitchell, D.G., Cheng, A.F., Krimigis, S.M., Keath, E.P., Jaskulek, S.E., Mauk, B.H., McEntire, R.W., Roelof, E.C., Williams, D.J., Hsieh, K.C., Drake, V.A., 1993. INCA: the ion neutral camera for energetic neutral imaging of the Saturnian magnetosphere. Opt. Eng. 32, 3096; Krimigis, S.M., Mitchell, D.G., Hamilton, D.C. et al., 1998. Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument (MIMI) on the Cassini Mission to Saturn/Titan, Space Sci. Rev., submitted]. In this paper we study the production of energetic neutral atoms resulting from the interaction of Titan’s inner exosphere with Saturn’s magnetosphere. We then simulate the ENA images of this interaction, that we anticipate to get from INCA, by using a 3-D model of the ENA production. This first necessitated the development of a model for the altitude density profile and composition of the Titan exosphere [Amsif, A., Dandouras, J., Roelof, E.C., 1997. Modeling the production and the imaging of energetic neutral atoms from Titan’s exosphere. J. Geophys. Res. 102, 22,169]. We thus used the Chamberlain model [Chamberlain, J.W., 1963. Planetary corona and atmospheric evaporation. Planet. Space Sci. 11, 901] and included the five major species: H, H2, N, N2 and CH4. The density and composition profiles obtained were then used to calculate the ENA production, considering a proton spectrum measured by Voyager in the Saturnian magnetosphere as the parent ion population. In order to generate simulated ENA images of the interaction of Titan’s exosphere with Saturn’s magnetosphere, we developed a model based on 3-D trajectory tracing techniques for the parent ions. Since the parent ions (E>10 keV) have gyroradii comparable with the Titan diameter, the screening effect of Titan on the parent ion population was also taken into account. This effect results in highly anisotropic ion distributions, which produce ‘shadows’ in the ENA fluxes, in certain directions. These shadows depend on the ENA energy and on the relative geometry of Titan, the magnetic field and the Cassini spacecraft position. The INCA images will thus enable us to remotely sense the ion fluxes and spectra. They are also expected to give information about the magnetic field in the vicinity of Titan and thus to Titan’s interaction with the magnetosphere of Saturn.  相似文献

The magnetic field of Mercury and the structure and dynamics of Mercury's magnetosphere, which will be studied by the spacecraft orbiting Mercury, are strongly influenced by the interaction of the solar wind with Mercury. In order to understand the internal magnetic field, it will be necessary to correct the observations of the external field for the distortions produced by the solar wind. Understanding of the solar wind interaction with Mercury is essential for understanding the structure and dynamics of the magnetosphere and phenomena such as magnetic storms. Helios 1 and 2 made a number of passes in the region traversed by the orbit of Mercury, and each pass provided a sample of the solar wind environment of Mercury. This paper reviews the plasma and magnetic field observations from Helios that provide a general basis for interpreting the observations of Mercury that will be made by orbiting spacecraft. The variables that govern the structure and dynamics of the magnetospheres of Mercury and Earth are approximately 5–10 times larger at Mercury than at Earth. Thus, the solar wind interaction with Mercury will be much stronger than the interaction with Earth. Moreover, the solar wind at Mercury is probably more variable than that at Earth. There is a clear need for measurements of the solar wind during the approach of spacecraft to Mercury and while they are in orbit around Mercury.  相似文献

Two new missions to Mercury are planned in the next few years (according to the NASA Messenger project in 2004 and the ESA BepiColomboproject in 2009). Many aspects of the study of Mercury concerning the origin of the planet, its interior structure, the formation and composition of the regolith, the surface cratering processes, the magnetosphere, the very tenuous atmosphere (exosphere) of Mercury, the orbital and rotational dynamics, and the thermal history of the planet's surface and interior are intensely developing at present. The presence of rocks on Mercury's surface, such as anorthosites (consisting mainly of calcium plagioclase) and feldspars, was reliably established in the course of such investigations. There are obvious signatures of old lava outflows and the heterogeneous composition of the crust depleted in FeO (less than 3%) and enriched with feldspar, with the possible presence of low-iron pyroxenes and alkali basalts. The sole spectral feature in the near infrared, observed at some longitudes, is a possible pyroxene absorption band at 0.95 m, which can be used to investigate the abundance and distribution of FeO in the regolith. Mercury represents a geologically intriguing planetary object. Its exosphere contains Na and K, the origin of which is undoubtedly related to the nature of Mercury's surface. The physical properties of Mercury's regolith, its structure, the grain sizes, the refractive index, and even the characteristic sizes of block material, lend themselves, in principle, to investigation by remote sensing methods. It is possible that deposits of buried water ice and/or elemental sulfur are present in the polar regions of the planet. The results of the study of the structure, physical properties, and composition of Mercury's regolith can be used to single out fundamental features in the origin of Mercury's surface. Thermal infrared spectra are also indicative of the presence of feldspars, pyroxenes, and igneous nepheline-bearing alkali syenites. The wavelengths of the thermal emissivity maxima indicate intermediate or slightly mafic rocks with a pronounced heterogeneous composition. The iron absorption bands give evidence for the presence of FeO in the Hermean crust and mantle. To some extent, the physical properties of the crustal layers may be associated with the odd magnetic field of the planet. The resulting Hermean magnetic field may be produced, at least partly, by randomly oriented paleomagnetic fields of individual large magnetized blocks of the planet's crust.  相似文献

A formalism has been developed for the calculation of the insolation on the planets Mercury and Venus neglecting any atmospheric absorption. For Mercury, the instantaneous insolation curves are repeated in a 2-tropical year cycle, the distribution of the solar radiation being perfectly symmetric between both hemispheres. In addition to latitudinal variations, one observes a longitudinal effect expressed by different instantaneous insolation distributions during the course of the time; on the equator, the relative diurnal insolation variability may attain a factor of 3. The small obliquity of Venus results in a nearly symmetric solar radiation distributions with respect to the equator except at the poles, where an important seasonal effect has been found. It has to be noted that no longitudinal dependence exists. Finally, the insolation curves are repeated in a nearly half-year cycle.  相似文献
