The objective of this paper is to compare the spectral features of the recently derived Group Sunspot Numbers (R G) and the traditional Wolf Sunspot Numbers (R Z) for the 1700–1995 period. In order to study the spectral features of both time series, two methods were used, including: (a) the multitaper analysis and (b) the wavelet analysis. Well-known features of the solar variability, such as the 98.6-yr (Gleissberg cycle), 10–11-yr (Schwabe cycle) and 5-yr (second solar harmonic) periodicities were identified with high confidence using the multitaper analysis. Also observed was a larger amount of power spread in high frequencies for R Z than for R G spectra. Furthermore, a multitaper analysis of two subsets, A (1700–1850) and B (1851–1995), has indicated that the main differences occurred in the first subset and seem to be due to uncertainties in the early observations. The wavelet transform, which allows observing the spectra evolution of both series, showed a strong and persistent 10–11-yr signal that remained during the whole period. The Meyer Wavelet Transform was applied to both R Z and R G. This study indicates that the main spectral characteristics of both series are similar and that their long-term variability has the same behavior.  相似文献

Northward flowing coastal currents along the western margin of India during winter–spring advect low-salinity Bay of Bengal water in to the Eastern Arabian Sea producing a distinct low-salinity tongue, the strength of which is largely governed by the freshwater flux to the bay during summer monsoons. Utilizing the sedimentary records of δ18OG. sacculifer, we reconstructed the past salinity-gradient within that low-salinity tongue, which serves as a proxy for the variation in freshwater flux to the Bay of Bengal and hence summer monsoon intensity. The north–south contrast in the sea level corrected (residual)-δ18OG. sacculifer can be interpreted as a measure of surface salinity-contrast between those two locations because the modern sea surface temperature and its past variation in the study region is nearly uniform. The core-top residual-δ18OG. sacculifer contrast of 0.45‰ between the two cores is assumed to reflect the modern surface salinity difference of 1 psu and serves as a calibration for past variations. The residual-δ18OG. sacculifer contrast varies between 0.2‰ at 75 ky B.P. (i.e., late-Marine Isotope Stage 5) and 0.7‰ at 20 ky B.P. (i.e., Last Glacial Maximum), suggesting that the overall salinity difference between the northern- and southern-end of the low-salinity tongue has varied between 0.6 and 1.6 psu. Considerably reduced difference during the former period than the modern suggests substantially intensified and northward-extended low-salinity tongue due to intense summer monsoons than today. On the other hand, larger difference (1.6 psu) during the latter period indicates that the low-salinity tongue was significantly weakened or withdrawn due to weaker summer monsoons. Thus, the salinity-gradient in the eastern Arabian Sea low-salinity tongue can be used to understand the past variations in the Indian summer monsoons.  相似文献

The helium and nitrogen enrichment of the atmospheres of early B-type stars during the main sequence (MS) evolutionary phase is re-analysed. It is confirmed that the effect depends on both the aget and the stellar massM. For example, the helium abundanceHe/H increases by 0.04 (60–70% of initial value) for stars withM=8–13M and by 0.025 (about 30%) for stars withM=6M . The nitrogen abundance rises by three times forM=14M and by, two times forM=10M . According to the latest theoretical computations, the observed appearance of CNO-cycled material in surface layers of the stars can be a result of the rotationally induced mixing, in particular, of the turbulent diffusion. Carbon is in deficiency in B stars, but unexpectedly does not show any correlation with the stellar age. However it is shown that the total C+N abundance derived for early B stars conflicts with the theory.Basing on modern data the helium enrichment is first examined in O-type MS stars, as well as in components of binaries. As compared with early B stars, the He abundance for more massive O stars and for components of binaries show a different relation with the relative aget/t MS . Namely during short time betweent/t MS 0.5 and 0.7 a sharp jump is observed up toHe/H=0.2 and more. In particular, such a jump is typical for fast rotating O stars (v sini200 km s–1),. Therefore the effect of mixing depends on massM, relative aget/t MS , rotational velocityv and duplicity. The mass problem (the discrepancy betweenM ev andM sp ) is also analysed, because some authors consider it as a possible evidence of early mixing, too. It is shown that the accurate data for components of binaries lead to the conclusion that the discrepancy is less than 30%. Such a difference can be removed at the expense of theM ev lowering, if the displacement of evolutionary tracks, owing to the rotationally induced mixing is taken into consideration.  相似文献

The resonant scattering spectrometers of the IRIS ground-based network for measuring whole-disc solar velocity oscillations make use of a piezoelastic modulator. The velocity noise generated by this optical component is analysed with particular emphasis on the required stability of the amplitude of oscillation, a. The product of the absolute stability ¦ aa m ¦/a m and the relative stability a r.m.s./a m may not be larger than 10 –4 to 10 –5 (depending on specific wishes), where a m is the optimum amplitude. The velocity noise due to photon statistics is slightly enhanced, but other instrumental sources of velocity noise remain unaffected.  相似文献

For nearly two decades, the aperature synthesis telescope known as the Very Large Array (VLA) has been providing a wealth of data on all types of astronomical objects. This telescope fills the need for more powerful and more sensitive instruments to gather data on a vast range of plasma phenomena in astrophysical settings. Currently the VLA is capable of observing at eight radio frequency bands (four corresponding to important spectral lines) with sensitivities on the order of 10–29 Wm –2 Hz –1, or 10–3 Jansky (1 mJy), and noise levels ten times lower. This paper describes the VLA and its capabilities, and describes how researchers interested in plasma astrophysics can use the instrument.  相似文献

Seven-band near-IR adaptive optics imaging of Uranus by the Keck II telescope during 2004, with the assistance of selected Hubble Space Telescope images, provides new constraints on the uranian vertical cloud structure and CH4 mixing ratio, after tuned deconvolutions are applied to remove significant limb darkening distortions. The most strongly absorbing bands approximately agree with the stratospheric haze model of Rages et al. [Rages, K., Pollack, J.B., Tomasko, M.G., Doose, L.R., 1991. Icarus 89, 359–376]. The next most absorbing bands suggest a CH4 relative humidity of 50–60% above the 1.2-bar condensation level. Window channels imply effective cloud pressures at 12° S that vary from 9 to 3.5 bars, and reflectivity values that vary from 7 to 4%, as the assumed CH4 mixing ratio varies from 0.75 to 4%. The shape of the center-to-limb radiance profile is in best agreement with the deep cloud being translucent, with relatively low optical depth, and is most consistent with low methane mixing ratios (0.75–1%) if the cloud particles are conservative. Non-conservative particles provide good fits over a wide range of mixing ratios. If C and S are enhanced by the same factor over solar mixing ratios, then the cloud pressures inferred from near-IR observations would be less than H2S condensation pressures for methane mixing ratios of 1.3% or greater. The bright band at 45° S must be partly produced by increased particulate scattering at pressures 2 bars to be consistent with its absence in 1.9-μm images and its presence in 0.619-μm images. The reflectivity of the lower clouds declines to nearly negligible values in the northern hemisphere, where I/F observations beyond 50° N are nearly those of a clear atmosphere. The most surprising result is the general lack of scattering originating from the 1.2-bar region where methane is expected to condense. Exceptions occur for discrete features. A large and long-lived discrete feature at 34° S is associated with particulates near 700 mb and 4.5 bars. The highest discrete feature, near 26° N, reached pressures 200 mb and was eleven times brighter than the background atmosphere in K images.  相似文献

High precision estimation of the equation of state of dark energy depends on constraints external to analyses of Cosmic Microwave Background fluctuations. A geometric estimation of the local expansion rate, H0, would provide the most direct and robust constraint. Traditional techniques to estimate H0 have depended on observations of standard candles for which systematic effects can be 10% or more. Observations of water maser sources in the accretion disks that feed the central engines of active galaxies enable simplified, robust, and largely geometric analyses. Many thousand maser sources will be discovered in studies with the SKA, owing to its great sensitivity. Spectroscopic monitoring and interferometric mapping – with intercontinental baselines – will allow estimation of H0 to 1% and possibly better.  相似文献

V andB light curves for supernova 1987A covering some 120 days from the outburst are here presented and discussed; they are shown to be rather atypical for a type II supernova. The absolute magnitude at maximum brightness is also analyzed, and after applying a correction for interstellar absorption we obtainM V, max, 0 =–16.1, andM B, max, 0 =–14.7; is is then concluded that 1987A is a supernova quite fainter than average. A comparison with other known supernova is made and some similarity is found with peculiar objects such as 1948B in NGC 6946, and probably, 1909 A in M 101.Research supported in part by SECyT and CONICOR.  相似文献

Strong absorption satellite lines of CaI 6572 were found on spectrograms taken on three successive days just after the fourth contact of the 1971–72 eclipse of Zeta Aurigae. The radial velocities of the satellite lines are –88 km s–1, –74 km s–1, and –180 km–1, respectively, relative to the K-type primary star (K4 Ib). These absorptions should be due to a circumstellar cloud in which the column density of neutral calcium atoms is 1×1017 cm–2 and the turbulent velocities come to 20–50 km s–1. It is suggested that the cloud may be formed by the rocket-effect of the Lyman quanta of the B-type component (B6 V). We estimate the density in the cloud to be 2×1011 atoms cm–3 fors=10R K and 2×1010 atoms cm–3 fors=102 R K, wheres denotes the distance of the cloud from the K star andR K the K star's radius. The mass loss rate of the K-type component is also estimated to be about 10–7 M yr–1, assuming that the expansion of the K star occurs isotropically.  相似文献

The masers of E-type methanol in orion KL and SGR B2   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Using a simplified model the statistical equilibrium and radiative transfer equations of E-type-CH3OH are solved for Orion KL and SgrB2. According to our calculation results and the observation data taken by Matsakiset al. (1980) and Morimotoet al. (1985a, b), the physical conditions of both sources are estimated. In theJ 2-J 1 E methanol maser region of Orion KL, the density, kinetic temperature, dust temperature, and the fractional abundance are 0.8–2×106 cm–3, 150, 30–90 K, 0.8–8×10–6. In the 4–1-30 E and 5–1-40 E methanol maser region of Sgr B2 the correspondance physical conditions above are 104 cm3, 45, 23 K, and 7×10–7, respectively.  相似文献

A highly anisotropic packet of solar electron intensities was observed on 6 April 1971 with a sensitive electrostatic analyzer array on the Earth-orbiting satellite IMP-6. The anisotropies of intensities at electron energies of several keV were factors 10 favoring the expected direction of the interplanetary magnetic lines of force from the Sun. The directional, differential intensities of solar electrons were determined over the energy range 1–40 keV and peak intensities were 102 cm–2 s–1 sr–1 eV–1 at 2–6 keV. This anisotropic packet of solar electrons was detected at the sattelite for a period of 4200 s and was soon followed by isotropic intensities for a relatively prolonged period. This impulsive emission was associated with the onsets of an optical flare, soft X-ray emission and a radio noise storm at centimeter wavelengths on the western limb of the Sun. Simultaneous measurements of a type III radio noise burst at kilometric wavelengths with a plasma wave instrument on the same satellite showed that the onsets for detectable noise levels ranged from 500 s at 178 kHz to 2700 s at 31.1 kHz. The corresponding drift rate requires a speed of 0.15c for the exciting particles if the emission is at the electron plasma frequency. The corresponding electron energy of 6 keV is in excellent agreement with the above direct observations of the anisotropic electron packet. Further supporting evidence that several-keV solar electrons in the anisotropic packet are associated with the emission of type III radio noise beyond 50R is provided by their time-of-arrival at Earth and the relative durations of the radio noise and the solar electron packet. Electron intensities at E 45 keV and the isotropic intensities of lower-energy solar electrons are relatively uncorrelated with the measurements of type III radio noise at these low frequencies. The implications of these observations relative to those at higher frequencies, and heliocentric radial distances 50R , include apparent deceleration of the exciting electron beam with increasing heliocentric radial distance.Research supported in part by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under contracts NAS5-11039 and NAS5-11074 and grant NGL16-001-002 and by the Office of Naval Research under contract N000-14-68-A-0196-0003.  相似文献

We consider the concept of a quasi-axisymmetric circulation to explore the global scale dynamics of planetary atmospheres. The momentum and energy transport processes in the smaller scales are formulated in terms of anisotropic eddy diffusion. In the early work of Williams and Robinson (1973) these concepts have been introduced to describe the Jovian circulation. Our study differs in that we adopt a spectral model (with vector spherical harmonics) and consider a linear system; we are also examining a different parameter regime. The troposphere of Jupiter is assumed to be weakly convectively unstable, and the circulation is driven by the fundamental component of solar differential heating with a broad maximum at the equator. Mode coupling arising from the Coriolis action is considered in self consistent form, and momentum and energy are allowed to cascade from lower to higher order modes. With a limited number of spherical harmonics, up to order 40, and with homogeneous boundary conditions, the conservation equations are integrated between the 25 and 10–5 bar pressure levels. In addition, a simplified single layer model is discussed which, even though heuristic in nature, elucidates and complements the numerical results. Our analysis leads to the following conclusions: (a) For a negative stability, S 0 = T 0/r + , the energy transports arising from large scale advection by the meridional circulation can amplify the response to the external heating. This crucially depends on the latitudinal structure of the circulation, so that banded wind fields with equatorial zonal jets are preferentially excited. (b) With a negative stability of order S 0 ~ – 10–6 K cm–1, the computed number of positive (and negative) zonal jets is similar to that observed on Jupiter. (c) The observed magnitudes in the zonal wind velocities require that the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient is of the order K r ~ 3 × 105 cm2 s–1, which in turn is consistent with the observed outward flux of energy from the planetary interior (F K r S 0 ); this diffusion rate is also of the right order of magnitude to obey mixing length theory. (d) The ratio between the horizontal and vertical eddy diffusion coefficients (relative mixing factor) is of critical importance. If it is too large ( 105), differential rotation or alternating zonal jets cannot be maintained; if it is too small ( 104), the equator tends to corotate. The intermediate value of order R ~ 5 × 104 is again consistent with mixing length theory. (e) With the above constraints on the transport coefficients, the flow is quasigeostrophic. (f) The meridional circulation is multicellular and of the Ferrel-Thomson type. It is consistent with the observed cloud striations in the Jovian atmosphere. (g) In the stable stratosphere at higher altitudes the fundamental component, directly driven by the Sun, dominates. The circulation degenerates, and broad, positive zonal jets develop at middle latitudes, resembling the observed wind field in the visible cloud cover of the Venus atmosphere.Applied Research Corporation, Landover, Maryland, U.S.A.  相似文献

The magnetic field in an axisymmetric pore is current free and can be represented by a flux tube with a magnetic potential of the formAJ 0(kr)e -kz. For a given magnetic flux the field in this pore model is uniquely defined if the magnetic pressure balances the gas pressure at two levels. For models with fluxes of 0.5–3.0 × 1020 mx the surface radius varies from 1100–2700 km (diameters of 3–8 arc-sec) and the Wilson depression is estimated at 200 km. As the flux increases, the field becomes nearly horizontal at the edge of the pore and eventually a penumbra is formed. The distinction between pores and sunspots is investigated; the critical flux is about 1020 Mx, corresponding to a radius of 1500 km.Visitor, as a member of the High Altitude Observatory Solar Project, at Sacramento Peak Observatory, Sunspot, N.M., U.S.A.  相似文献

Deflection of coronal mass ejection in the interplanetary medium   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

A solar coronal mass ejection (CME) is a large-scale eruption of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun. It is believed to be the main source of strong interplanetary disturbances that may cause intense geomagnetic storms. However, not all front-side halo CMEs can encounter the Earth and produce geomagnetic storms. The longitude distribution of the Earth-encountered front-side halo CMEs (EFHCMEs) has not only an east–west (E–W) asymmetry  (Wang et al., 2002), but also depends on the EFHCMEs' transit speeds from the Sun to 1 AU. The faster the EFHCMEs are, the more westward does their distribution shift, and as a whole, the distribution shifts to the west. Combining the observational results and a simple kinetic analysis, we believe that such E–W asymmetry appearing in the source longitude distribution is due to the deflection of CMEs' propagation in the interplanetary medium. Under the effect of the Parker spiral magnetic field, a fast CME will be blocked by the background solar wind ahead and deflected to the east, whereas a slow CME will be pushed by the following background solar wind and deflected to the west. The deflection angle may be estimated according to the CMEs' transit speed by using a kinetic model. It is shown that slow CMEs can be deflected more easily than fast ones. This is consistent with the observational results obtained by Zhang et al. (2003), that all four Earth-encountered limb CMEs originated from the east. On the other hand, since the most of the EFHCMEs are fast events, the range of the longitude distribution given by the theoretical model is E40°,W70°, which is well consistent with the observational results (E40°,W75°).  相似文献

In a closed expanding-contracting Universe, matter will be subject to an inward acceleration large enough to prevent perpetual expansion. A closed Universe must also perform a simple harmonic motion, which might consist either of one single cycle or of an infinite series of oscillations about a central point. It is the purpose of this study to find the rate ofa 0, the cosmic acceleration, from which the gravitational constantG can be determined. It will be shown from Ampère's equation and Planck's radiation law that it is possible to derivea 0=7.623×10–12 ms–2, a value which also conforms with the uncertainty principle. The relationship betweena 0 and electromagnetic radiation is based on the concept that charges (such as electrons) must emit radiation while accelerating. The rate ofa 0 yields a universal gravitational constant ofG=6.645×10–11 N m2 kg–2.  相似文献

The Ulysses spacecraft encountered the planet Jupiter in February 1992, on its journey towards high heliospheric latitude. During the approach to the planet, as well as on the outbound pass, while receding from the Jovian bow shock, the Plasma Frequency Receiver that is part of the Unified Radio and Plasma Wave experiment (URAP) recorded bursts of plasma waves in the frequency range of a few kHz. These emissions, first observed by the PWS experiment onboard the Voyager spacecraft, have been identified as upstream electron plasma waves. In this paper, we present the first analysis of the characteristics of these emissions, which are very similar to those found in the Earth's electron foreshock, upstream of the Earth's bow shock. These bursty emissions, with a peak frequency very close to the local electron plasma frequency Fpe, have a typical electric field amplitude in the range 0.01–0.1 mV m−1, with some bursts above 1 mV m−1. The frequency bandwidth over which significant power can be found above the instrument background noise ranges from below 0.2 Fpc to about 2 Fpc. On the basis of our present knowledge of similar emissions observed at Earth, we suggest that the broadband emissions are triggered by suprathermal (a few tens of eV) electrons, streaming back from Jupiter's bow shock.  相似文献

Hydrographic changes in the NW Arabian Sea are mainly controlled by the monsoon system. This results in a strong seasonal and vertical gradient in surface water properties, such as temperature, nutrients, carbonate chemistry and the isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC). Living specimens of the planktic foraminifer species Globigerina bulloides and Globigerinoides ruber, were collected using depth stratified plankton tows during the SW monsoon upwelling period in August 1992 and the NE monsoon non-upwelling period in March 1993. We compare their distribution and the stable isotope composition to the seawater properties of the two contrasting monsoon seasons. The oxygen isotope composition of the shells (δ18Oshell) and vertical shell concentration profiles indicate that the depth habitat for both species is shallower during upwelling (SW monsoon period) than during non-upwelling (NE monsoon period). The calcification temperatures suggest that most of the calcite is precipitated at a depth level just below the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), however above the main thermocline. Consequently, the average calcification temperature of G. ruber and G. bulloides is lower than the sea surface temperature by 1.7±0.8 and 1.3±0.9 °C, respectively. The carbon isotope composition of the shells (δ13Cshell) of both species differs from the in situ δ13CDIC found at the calcification depths of the specimens. The observed offset between the δ13Cshell and the ambient δ13CDIC results from (1) metabolic/ontogenetic effects, (2) the carbonate chemistry of the seawater and, for symbiotic G. ruber, (3) the possible effect of symbionts or symbiont activity. Ontogenetic effects produce size trends in Δδ13Cshell–DIC and Δδ18Oshell–w: large shells of G. bulloides (250–355μm) are 0.33‰ (δ13C) and 0.23‰ (δ18O) higher compared to smaller ones (150–250 μm). For G. ruber, this is 0.39‰ (δ13C) and 0.17‰ (δ18O). Our field study shows that the δ13Cshell decreases as a result of lower δ13CDIC values in upwelled waters, while the effects of the carbonate system and/or temperature act in an opposite direction and increase the δ13Cshell as a result lower [CO32−] (or pH) values and/or lower temperature. The Δδ13Cshell–DIC [CO32−] slopes from our field data are close to those reported literature from laboratory culture experiments. Since seawater carbonate chemistry affects the δ13Cshell in an opposite sense, and often with a larger magnitude, than the change related to productivity (i.e. δ13CDIC), higher δ13Cshell values may be expected during periods of upwelling.  相似文献

The various physical parameters of a SNR can easily be worked out from graphs established on the basis of the recalibrated relation between the radio surface brightness , and the linear diameterD of a SNR (Ilovaisky and Lequeux, 1972). These graphs lead to the estimation of the distancer (kpc), linear diameterD (pc), monochromatic power at 1 GHz,P 1 GHz (W Hz–1); and total powerP tot (a) (erg. s–1) of a SNR, given its mean angular diameter <> (arc min), flux density at 1 GHz, S1 GHz (f.u.) and spectral indexa. Three SNR (W28A1, Monoceros SNR, W49B) are used to illustrate the case. The radio spectrum of one of these (W49B), curved at low frequencies, is explained in terms of absorption by the diffuse interstellar medium. Various cases are discussed and some physical parameters of the absorbing matter are established.  相似文献
