Petrographic and microprobe investigations of calc-alkaline (CA) rocks from the High Cascade Range (i.e., Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Jefferson, Crater Lake and Mt. Shasta) of western North America show that crystal clots represent primary igneous phase assemblages and are not products of amphibole reactions with melt. For each eruptive complex, crystal clots display diverse modal proportions even within a single eruptive unit. Nevertheless, in all cases the crystal-clot minerals are also represented in the rock as phenocrysts or microphenocrysts. Basalts contain clots of ol+plag+mgt, ol+mgt, cpx+ plag+mgt, cpx+mgt and plag+mgt; andesites, clots of cpx+mgt, opx+mgt, cpx+opx+plag+mgt, cpx+plag+mgt, opx+plag+mgt and plag±mgt; and dacites, clots of opx+mgt, cpx+opx+plag+ mgt, opx+plag+mgt, amph+plag+mgt±ilm, amph+mgt±ilm and plag±mgt. The bulk compositions of most of these clot assemblages could not have been derived from amphibole percursors. Although some amphiboles in dacitic rocks display a breakdown reaction of amph=plag+cpx+opx +mag, these mineral clusters, unlike those of clots, typically have a relict amphibole crystal outline and a fine-grained metamorphic texture. Plagioclase grains in the mineral clusters lack oscillatory zoning which is typical of crystal clot plagioclase grains. The euhedral to subhedral shapes of most clot minerals and the oscillatory zoning present in most clot plagioclase grains are not likely to have formed from the breakdown of amphibole. Crystal clots are also observed in Hawaiian and ocean floor basalts, although amphibole fractionation has not been proposed for those lavas. Magnetite fractionation may be the controlling process limiting iron enrichment in CA magmas rather than amphibole fractionation. Textural evidence indicates that magnetite is an early-forming phase in CA magmas. V, which is concentrated in magnetite, shows a strong decrease with increasing silica in many CA rocks, supporting a magnetite fractionation model.Hawaii Institute of Geophysics Contrib. Several petrologic experiments have demonstrated that in igneous and metamorphic reactions amphibole minerals can break down by a subsolidus dehydration reaction, but evidence for the reaction in natural rocks has been lacking. Evidence for the breakdown of an edenite-pargasite amphibole by a subsolidus dehydration reaction has now been found in an andesite flow from Garner Mountain, southern Cascase Range. The andesite contains one modal percent of crystal clots formed of crystallites of opx, cpx, plag, K-spar, opaque and quartz. The crystal clots retain the original amphibole morphology and intra-clot pyroxenes are aligned with crystallographic c parallel to c in the amphibole precursor; these conditions would not be duplicated by a melting reaction.Microprobe analyses of the bulk clot and the intra-clot minerals suggest the solid-state reaction: 100 amph+10 SiO2=>55 cpx+33 plag+22 opx+ 1 opq+1 ksparPyroxene thermometry of the andesite groundmass pyroxenes and the intra-clot pyroxenes demonstrates that the amphibole dehydration reaction occurred in the xenocrystic amphiboles as a result of heating by the near-solidus andesite magma.  相似文献

To model magmatic crystallization processes for mafic to intermediatecompositions at high pressure, liquidus phase relations in theforsterite–anorthite–diopside–silica (FADS)tetrahedron within the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2system have been determined at 2·0 GPa. Compositionsof five liquidus invariant points have been determined and theapproximate compositions of five others have been inferred. These involve primary phase volumes for forsterite (fo), enstatite(en), diopside (di), high quartz (qz), spinel (sp), sapphirine(sa), garnet (gt), anorthite (an), and corundum (cor). The determined(with wt % coefficients) and inferred reactions (without coefficients)that define each isobaric invariant point are as follows: 23 en + 68 di + 9 sp = 84 liq + 16 fo 37 di + 63 sa = 47 liq + 40 sp + 13 en 100 gt = 21 liq + 27 sa + 55 en + 18 di 1 di + 59 en + 41 an = 43 liq + 57 gt 18 di + 21 qz + 15 en + 47 an = 100 liq di + an + gt = liq + sa an + gt = liq + sa + en sa + an + di = liq + sp sa + an = liq + cor + sp di + cor = liq + an + sp. These phase relations provide a diverse range of constraintson igneous processes at pressures near 2 GPa. They show thatfractional crystallization of a model basalt gives a residualliquid strongly enriched in SiO2, strongly depleted in MgO,and mildly enriched in Al2O3. Such a trend is consistent withthe calc-alkaline fractionation trend observed at subductionzones, but is in disagreement with suggestions that fractionationof tholeiitic basalt in this pressure range yields an alkalicbasalt. Both trends may occur for natural basalts dependingon the Na2O content of the parental magma. Also, the data showthat the minimum pressure for the formation of cumulate eclogitesand garnet pyroxenites is about 1·8–1·9GPa. The lower limit of pressure at which sapphirine can crystallizefrom a liquid in the FADS tetrahedron is estimated to be 1·1–1·5GPa and the upper limit is >3 GPa. Sapphirine crystallizesfrom magmas intermediate in composition between basalt and andesite.Probable igneous sapphirine in mafic associations is rare, butit occurs as part of a pyroxenite xenolith from Delegate, Australia, that we suggest is a cumulate assemblage and in a sapphirinenorite at Wilson Lake, Labrador, Canada. Three groups of ultramafix xenoliths were collected from alkali basalt in the island of Hierro, Canary Islands: (1) Cr-diopside series (spinel harzbugite, lherzolite, dunite); (2) Al-augite series xenoliths (spinel wherlite, olivine clinopyroxenite, dunite, olivine websterite); (3) gabbroic xenoliths. The main textures are granoblastic, porphyroclastic and granular, but poikilitic textures, and symplectitic intergrowths of clinopyroxene (cpx) + spinel (sp)±orthopyroxene (opx)±olivine (ol) (in rare cases cpx+opx), occur locally. Textural relations and large inter- and intra-sample mineral chemical variations testify to a complex history of evolution of the mantle source region, involving repeated heating, partial melting, and enrichment associated with infiltration by basaltic melts. The oldest assemblage in the ultramafic xenoliths (porphyroclasts of ol+opx±sp±cpx) represents depleted abyssal mantle formed within the stability field of spinel lherzolite. The neoblast assemblage [ol+cpx+ sp±opx±plagioclase (plag)±ilmenite (il)±phlogopite (phlog)] reflect enrichment in CaO+Al2O3+Na2O+ FeO±TiO2±K2O±H2O through crystal/liquid separation processes and metasomatism. The Al-augite-series xenoliths represent parts of the mantle where magma infiltration was much more extensive than in the source region of the Cr-diopside series rocks. Geothermometry indicates temperature fluctuations between about 900–1000 and 1200°C. Between each heating event the mantle appears to have readjusted to regional geothermal gradient passing 950°C at about 12 kbar. The gabbroic xenoliths represent low-pressure cumulates.  相似文献

Evolution of the magma chamber at Mount Mazama involved repeated recharge by two types of andesite (high-Sr and low-Sr), crystal fractionation, crystal accumulation, assimilation, and magma mixing (Bacon and Druitt 1988). This paper addresses the modal compositions, textures, mineral chemistry and magmatic temperatures of (i) products of the 6845±50 BP climactic eruption, (ii) blocks of partially fused granitoid wallrock found in the ejecta, and (iii) preclimactic rhyodacitic lavas leaked from the chamber in late Pleistocene and early Holocene time. Immediately prior to the climactic eruption the chamber contained ≳ 40 km3 of rhyodacite (10 vol% plag + opx + aug + hb + mt + ilm, ∼880° C) overlying high-Sr andesite and cumulus-crystal mush (28–51 vol% plag + hb ± opx ± aug + mt ± ilm, 880° to ≥950° C), which in turn overlay low-Sr crystal mush (50–66 vol% plag + opx + aug ± hb ± ol + mt + ilm, 890° to ≥950† C). Despite the well known compositional gap in the ejecta, no thermal discontinuity existed in the chamber. Pre-eruptive water contents of pore liquids in most high-Sr and low-Sr mushes were 4–6 wt%, but on average the high-Sr mushes were slightly richer in water. Although parental magmas of the crystal mushes were andesitic, xenocrysts of bytownite and Ni-rich magnesian olivine in some scoriae record the one-time injection of basalt into the chamber. Textures in ol-bearing scoriae preserve evidence for the reactions ol + liq = opx and ol + aug + liq(+ plag?) = hb, which occurred in andesitic liquids at Mount Mazama. Strontium abundances in plagioclase phenocrysts constrain the petrogenesis of preclimactic and climactic rhyodacites. Phenocryst cores derived from high-Sr and low-Sr magmas have different Sr contents which can be resolved by microprobe. Partition coefficients for plagioclase in andesitic to rhyolitic glasses range from 2 to 7, and increase as glass %SiO2 increases. Evolved Pleistocene rhyodacites (∼30–25,000 BP) and rhyodacites of the Holocene Llao Rock center (7015±45 BP) contain Sr-poor plagioclase and are derivatives from low-Sr magma. Rhyodacites of the Pleistocene Sharp Peak domes, Holocene Cleetwood flow (∼6850 BP), and climactic ejecta contain discrete Sr-rich and Sr-poor plagioclase phenocryst populations and are hybrids produced by mixing low-Sr rhyodacite (containing Sr-poor plag + opx + aug) with a more mafic high-Sr magma (with Sr-rich plag [ + hb?]). The data reinforce the conclusions of crystal-liquid mixing calculations (Bacon and Druitt 1988), and suggest some important refinements to the magma chamber model.  相似文献

Sapphirine-bearing rocks occur in the northern part of the Western Gneiss Region, Vestranden, central Norway. The sapphirine-bearing rocks are characterized by a high MgO/(MgO + FeO) ratio, high Al2O3, MgO and CaO, and low SiO2 contents. These rocks form layers within larger complexes which originated as layered magmatic rocks. High PT-metamorphism produced a cpx+ky+gt assemblage. The P and T estimates are P = 14.5±2 kbar and T= 870±50° C. During retrogression, the high-P granulite assemblage broke down to form an intermediate-P granulite mineralogy comprising orthopyroxene, spinel, anorthite, andesine, sapphirine and corundum. Textural relationships suggest that sapphirine formed by the reaction: spinel+kyanite sapphirine+corundum, and probably also by a reaction between corundum, spinel and orthopyroxene. All reactions took place within the stability field of kyanite. Textural and micro-chemical relationships indicate equilibrium, conditions during the peak metamorphism, whereas pronounced disequilibrium characterizes the mineral associations formed during the early retrogression at low P H2O. The investigation shows that parts of the northern segment of the Western Gneiss Region underwent a metamorphic evolution similar to the Caledonian one recorded from eclogite/granulite terrains further south.  相似文献

Electron microprobe analyses sensitive to 20ppmw (2σ) were made for Na, P, K and Ti in garnet, pyroxenes and olivine from peridotite and eclogite xenoliths from African kimberlites and volcanic rocks in Tanzania. Average concentrations (ppmw) in peridotite (mostly garnet lherzolite) are: Na2O gt 340 ol 90 opx 1070 cpx 2.1 (wt.%); P2O5 gt 460 ol 130 opx 50 cpx 350; K2O gt <20 ol <20 opx 30 cpx 170; TiO2 gt 1470 ol 130 opx 480 cpx 1630. For eclogites and a cpx megacryst with gt inclusions: Na2O gt 610 cpx 4.3 (wt.%); P2O5 gt 530 cpx 300; K2O gt <20 cpx 370; TiO2 gt 1990 cpx 1980.In garnet, Na can be explained by coupled substitution with P and Ti, and there is no need to invoke six-coordinated silicon. The Na distribution between garnet and clinopyroxene correlates with the Fe/Mg distribution for both eclogites and peridotites, and for the peridotites correlates with estimates of pressure and temperature from pyroxene composition. When calibrated experimentally, the Na distribution may be a useful indicator of physical conditions at depths for which the Fe/Mg distribution is insensitive; furthermore the Na distribution may be less sensitive to oxidation state.  相似文献

Rare inclusions in Holocene basanite within the western GrandCanyon are comprised of poikilitic titaniferous amphibole togetherwith variable proportions of relatively Fe-rich clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, Cr-poor spinel, and pyropic garnet, magnesian ilmenite, and titaniferous phlogopite. No feldsparhas been found in the 219 inclusions investigated. Availableexperimental data suggest crystallization at approximately 20kb (65 km depth) in a region where the crust is 30–40km thick. On the basis of their fabric, the inclusions appear to representcumulates, but other modes of origin cannot be completely ruledout. Anhydrous grains, including some considered to be postcumulusprecipitates, experienced extensive resorption into the interstitialhydrous melt before it ultimately crystallized, perhaps 100?C below liquidus temperatures, as the poikilitic amphibole. In spite of these crystal-melt reactions, and some probablesubsolidus recrystallization as well, systematic variationsin cumulus phase compositions exist and indicate one main precipitationsequence was ol+sp, ol+sp+cpx, cpx+cpx+sp, cpx+sp, cpx+sp+ilm. The local pyropic garnet appears postcumulus in the last threecumulus assemblages. The igneous bodies represented by the inclusions comprised arelatively small portion of the upper mantle sampled by theascending basanitic magma. But in contrast to the thin amphibole-bearingveins in the mantle-derived massif at Etang de Lherz, the igneousbodies beneath the Grand Canyon are considered to be substantiallylarger in dimension, on the order of at least meters ratherthan a few centimeters. Primary nephelinite-basanite melts produced by variable butsmall degrees of partial melting of hydrous upper mantle arenot represented by the poikilitic amphiboles because of complexprocesses at the site of emplacement, including reactions betweenmelt and chromian-spinel peridotite wall rocks.  相似文献

Garnet granulite facies xenoliths hosted in Devonian lamprophyresfrom the Kola Peninsula are interpreted to represent the high-grademetamorphic equivalents of continental flood tholeiites, emplacedinto the Baltic Shield Archaean lower crust in early Proterozoictime. Geochronological data and similarities in major and traceelement geochemistry suggest that the xenoliths formed duringthe same plume-related magmatic event that created a widespreadPalaeoproterozoic large igneous province (LIP) at 2·4–2·5Ga. They are, thus, the first samples of the lower crust ofa Palaeoproterozoic LIP to be studied in petrological detail. The suite includes mafic granulites (gar + cpx + rutile ±plag ± opx ± phlog ± amph), felsic granulites(plag + gar + cpx + rutile ± qtz ± Kspar ±phlog ± amph) and pyroxenites (± phlog ±amph), but mafic garnet granulites predominate. Although somesamples are restites, there is no evidence for a predominanceof magmatic cumulates, as is common for Phanerozoic lower-crustalxenolith suites. Metasediments are also absent. Phlogopite and/oramphibole occur in xenoliths of all types and are interpretedto be metasomatic in origin. The K-rich metasomatic event occurredat  相似文献

“Lower-crustal suite” xenoliths occur in “on-craton” and “off-craton” kimberlites located across the south-western margin of the Kaapvaal craton, southern Africa.

Rock types include mafic granulite (plagioclase-bearing assemblages), eclogite (plagioclase-absent assemblages with omphacitic clinopyroxene) and garnet pyroxenite (“orthopyroxene-bearing eclogite”). The mafic granulites are subdivided into three groups: garnet granulites (cpx + grt + plag + qtz); two pyroxene garnet granulites (cpx + opx + grt + plag); kyanite granulites (cpx + grt + ky + plag + qtz). Reaction microstructures preserved in many of the granulite xenoliths involve the breakdown of plagioclase by a combination of reactions: (1) cpx + plag → grt + qtz; (2) plag → grt + ky + qtz; (3) plag → cpx (jd-rich) + qtz. Compositional zoning in minerals associated with these reactions records the continuous transition from granulite facies mineral assemblages and pressure (P) — temperature (T) conditions to those of eclogite facies.

Two distinct P-T arrays are produced: (1) “off-craton” granulites away from the craton margin define a trend from 680 °C, 7.5 kbar to 850 °C, 12 kbar; (2) granulite xenoliths from kimberlites near the craton margin and “on-craton” granulites produce a trend with similar geothermal gradient but displaced to lower T by ˜ 100 °C. Both P-T fields define higher geothermal gradients than the model steady state conductive continental geotherm (40 mWm2) and are not consistent with the paleogeotherm constructed from mantle-derived garnet peridotite xenoliths.

A model involving intrusion of basic magmas around the crust/mantle boundary followed by isobaric cooling is proposed to explain the thermal history of the lower crust beneath the craton margin. The model is consistent with the thermal evolution of the exposed Namaqua-Natal mobile belt low-pressure granulites and the addition of material from the mantle during the Namaqua thermal event (c. 1150 Ma). The xenolith P-T arrays are not interpreted as representing paleogeotherms at the time of entrainment in the host kimberlite. They most likely record P-T conditions “frozen-in” during various stages of the tectonic juxtaposition of the Namaqua Mobile Belt with the Kaapvaal craton.  相似文献

Trace element analyses have been obtained employing RNAA andINAA techniques for 23 bulk-rock specimens and for five pairsof mechanically separated opx and cpx from Western Alpine peridotites.Investigated rocks include 5 garnet lherzolites from Alpe Arami, and spinel (+plagioclase) lherzolites from Finero (2), Balmuccia(7), Baldissero (6) and Lanzo (3). Three pyroxene pairs wereanalysed from Balmuccia and two from Baldissero. All rocks exhibit marked LREE depletions relative to chondriticabundances except for the two Finero samples which appear tobe HREE depleted. Separated minerals also show LREE depletionsand HREE enrichments relative to chondrites. However, intermediaterare earths are markedly depleted in opx whereas they are enrichedin coexisting cpx. Higher overall concentrations and patternssimilar to those of the bulk rocks indicate that REE distributionsin lherzolites are dominated by clinopyroxene chemistry. Incontrast, both opx and cpx appear to contribute equally to the3d transition element geochemistry of the investigated peridotites. Most of the investigated rocks show the effects of early partialmelting of a pre-existing mantle source material characterizedby ‘chondritic’ REE fractionation and by a 3d transitionelement composition near the estimated values of Jagoutz etal. (1979). The melting process probably developed in a closed system (equilibriummelting) and at temperatures which, for the spinel peridotiteprotolith, seemingly were compatible with estimates of Presnallel al. (1979) for the ‘melting at the cusp’ process(T = 1200–1250 °C). In some cases the residual rocksunderwent a further contamination event. This is particularlyevident for the Lanzo peridotites, but possibly also for singleBaldissero and Balmuccia specimens. During ascent to the surface, the rocks underwent subsolidusannealing which occurred at temperatures around 900–1000°C under more or less closed system conditions.  相似文献

In the Sveconorwegian granulite region of SW Sweden, sapphirine occurs in reaction coronas in Mg- and Al-rich kyanite eclogites which form parts of mafic complexes. Aluminous to peraluminous sapphirine forms symplectitic intergrowths with plagioclase±corundum±spinel after kyanite. Kyanite and omphacite were the main reactants in the formation of sapphirine. The sapphirine formed during decompression from the eclogite facies ( P >15  kbar) through the high- to medium-pressure granulite and upper amphibolite facies at c. 750  °C. Preserved growth zoning in garnet, frozen-in reaction textures, and chemical disequilibrium suggest a rapid tectonic exhumation. Ductile deformation in the surrounding gneisses and parts of the mafic complex is characterized by foliation development, WNW–ESE stretching and dynamic recrystallization under granulite to upper amphibolite facies conditions, simultaneous with the sapphirine formation. This decompression, high-grade re-equilibration and associated deformation took place during the exhumation of the Sveconorwegian eclogites, bracketed between 969±14 and 956±7  Ma. Probable tectonic causes are late-orogenic gravitational collapse and/or plate divergence following the Sveconorwegian–Grenvillian continent–continent collision. There are no indications of metastability of aluminous and peraluminous sapphirine in the decompressed kyanite eclogites; sapphirine is stable in amphibole-poor and amphibolitized varieties, including rocks that have undergone dynamic recrystallization. Close similarities between rocks from different parts of the world with respect to reaction textures suggests that sapphirine+plagioclase-forming reactions are a universal feature in high-temperature decompressed kyanite eclogites.  相似文献

The massif-type anorthosite complex at Bolangir in the northern part of the Eastern Ghats belt occurs in a milieu of predominantly supracrustal granulite-grade rocks. The massif is separated from the host gneisses by coarse-grained garnetiferous granitoid gneisses which are interpreted as coeval crustallyderived melts. Melanocratic ferrodiorite rocks occur at the immediate contact with the anorthosite massif which they intrude in cross-cutting dikes and sheets. The emplacement age of the anorthosite diapir and the associated igneous suites is deemed to be pre-D2. Recrystallization of the igneous assemblages of the ferrodiorite suite (750–800°C, 7–8kbar, ) during a period of near-isobaric cooling from the igneous crystallization stage to the regionalP-T regime led to extensive development of coronitic garnet at the interface of plagioclase phenocrysts with the mafic matrix assemblage (opx + fay + cpx + ilm ± amph, bio). Abundant accessory phases are zircon, apatite and thorite. The mafic phases have extremely ferrous compositions (XFe gar: 0.93-0.87, fay: 0.90-0.87, opx: 0.80-0.60, cpx: 0.70-0.47, amph: 0.81-0.71) reflecting the low Mg-number (16-8) of the rocks. Compared to worldwide occurrences of similar rocks, the Bolangir ferrodiorites (SiO2 36–58 wt.%, FeO*: 39-10 wt.%) are characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of HFSE and REE (TiO2: 4.8-1.0 wt.%, P2O5: 1.7-0.5 wt.%, Zr: 5900-1300 ppm, Y: 240-80 ppm, La: 540-100 ppm, Ce: 1100-200 ppm, Yb: 22-10 ppm, Th: 195-65 ppm). Well defined linear variation trends for major and trace elements reflect progressive plagioclase accumulation towards the felsic members of the suite. The ferrodiorites are interpreted to represent residual liquids of anorthosite crystallization which after segregation and extraction from the ascending diapir became enriched in HFSE and REE through selective assimilation of accessory phases (zircon, monazite, apatite) from crustal felsic melts. Ferromonzodioritic rock presumably formed through hybridization between the ferrodiorite and overlying felsic melts.  相似文献

The Beni Bousera ultramafic massif, Morocco, is composed ofperidotite with subordinate garnet pyroxenitc units which belongto two different families: (1) the Type I pyroxenites, whichare characterized by an Fe-enrichment trend; and (2) the TypeII pyroxenites, which are characterized by high but nearly constantMg/Fe ratios and highly variable concentrations of Ca and Al;the latter family includes corundum-bearing garnet pyroxeniteswhich resemble the peraluminous eclogites and grospydites describedas xenoliths in kimberlite diatremes. The Type II pyroxenites appear as layered sheets in the peridotite, and have granuloblastic metamorphic texture. They contain aprimary association of a coarse-grained assemblage (cpx + gt;cpx + gt + sp; cpx + gt + co), and a variety of secondary andtertiary associations includ ng clinopyrox-ene, orthopyroxene, olivine, spinel, corundum, sapphirine, plagioclase, and amphibole. The primary assemblage in the corundum-bearing pyroxenite ischaracterized by clinopyroxene rich in A12O3 (up to 20 wt%),and poor in Na2O (generally less than 2 wt.%). The clinopyroxenephase is therefore richer in the Ca-Ts molecule than in thejadeite molecule. On the other hand, the composition of theprimary and secondary clinopyroxene and garnet phases showsstrong variation across the pyroxenite sheets. These variationsexpress compositional variations of the rock system across thesheets. The cpx-gt associations indicate high temperatures (1200–1350?C) in the central parts of the sheets. The crystallizationpressure may have reached at least 20 kb in the corundum-bearingassemblages. The bulk-rock composition and the compatible element's behaviourin the Type II pyroxenite sheets suggest that the modal andcryptic layering mainly resulted from igneous fractionationprocesses. The REE patterns of corundum-bearing Type II pyroxeniteare characterized by low concentrations of HREE and by significantEu anomalies. These, together with the high bulk-rock Sr/Ndratios, suggest that plagioclase segregation may have playeda significant part in the rock genesis. These geochemical featuresare similar to those described, in the literature, in some low-pressure,plagioclase-bearing adcumulates (e.g., in the crustal sequenceof the Oman ophiolite). They are quite different from thoseobserved in the Type I pyroxenite sheets in the Beni Bouseramassif, whose geochemistry suggests that plagioclase playedno part in the fractionation process, whereas garnet probablyfractionated as an early igneous phase. The Type II pyroxenitesheets have a primary isotopic signature similar to MORB, basedon the composition of leached clinopyroxene. It is concluded that the Mg-rich Type II pyroxenite sheets resultedultimately from the fractionation of a basaltic melt at lowpressure, and from the accumulation of olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase along dykes cross-cutting the surrounding peridotite. The close similarities with the geochemical features in theOman ophiolite lead us to suggest that these processes may havebeen operative in an oceanic crustal environment. The high-pressureand high-temperature crystallization of the ‘primary’cpx+gt + co assemblage was achieved deep in the mantle, aftersubduction and/or dragging down in convection currents of thisparticular piece of the (oceanic?) lithosphere. Further ascentmay have resulted in partial melting of peridotite and/or pyroxenite, and in the emplacement of the Type I pyroxenite sheets.

Abstract Late Archaean orthogneisses and aluminous and iron-rich metasedimentary rocks intruded by anorthosite and a ferrodiorite-granite suite were completely recrystallized during Proterozoic granulite facies metamorphism. Geobarometry and geothermometry indicate P-T conditions of around 7.5kbar. 700°C, with a CO2-rich fluid phase and logfO2 at or below -16. A two-stage high-grade history of near isochemical corona growth is preserved in metasediments with the reaction cycle opx + plag + H2O → hbl+gar+SiO2→ opx+plag+H2O. End product compositions resemble those of the initial phases, and the only mobile components were SiO2 and/or H2O. The coronas reflect shortlived fluctuations in chemical activity at essentially constant P and T, contrary to simple progressive change in equilibrium parameters recorded by most corona-bearing textures.  相似文献

Mantle xenoliths from Paleogene basanites of East Serbia were studied using EMP and LA-ICP-MS techniques in order to better understand mantle characteristics in this region. Five different mantle lithologies have been distinguished: a dunite/harzburgite/lherzolite (D/HZ/L) group, clinopyroxene-rich lherzolites (Cpx-L), clinopyroxene megacrysts (Cpx-M), spinel-rich olivine websterites (OWB1) and spinel-poor olivine websterites (OWB2). D/HZ/L xenoliths are the most common and represent normal mantle composed of typical anhydrous spinel peridotites with well equilibrated, unzoned silicates characterized by high Mg# s. Negative correlations between Mg# and TiO2, Al2O3 and CaO wt% in clinopyroxenes (cpx) and orthopyroxenes (opx) and the Cr–Al trend in spinel (sp) suggest depletion via extraction of basaltic melts. The modal composition of D/HZ/L xenoliths and unusual low-Al opx suggest that the lithospheric mantle underneath East Serbia is more depleted than normal European lithosphere. D/HZ/L xenoliths contain numerous pockets and veins filled by Cr-rich cpx, Ti-rich spinel, altered glass, apatite and rare ilmenite and phlogopite. Petrographic observations, supported by major element contents in sp and cpx, and modelling using trace element contents in cpx, indicate that the pockets and veins formed from infiltration of alkaline melts and reaction with peridotite wall-rock causing opx and spinel replacement. The same alkaline melt-related metasomatism gave rise to the Cpx-L and OWB1 mantle xenoliths and Cpx-M xenocrysts. Trace element contents of cpx in these xenoliths show a distinctively concave downwards REE pattern with a HFSE depletion, very similar to cpx megacrysts from the Pannonian Basin and to vein cpx from Eifel. In contrast, the OWB2 xenoliths show evidence of precipitation from subduction-related mafic to ultramafic melts, as inferred from their opx-rich lithology and unusual Cr-rich spinels. They are probably related to subduction magmatism during the Late Cretaceous.Milivoje Jovanovi: deceased in April 2004  相似文献

The sapphirine granulites from G. Madugula, Eastern Ghats preserve a variety of mineral textures and reactions. Corona and reaction textures are used in conjunction with mineral compositions to construct a sequence of metamorphic reactions describing the mineralogical evolution of sapphirine granulites. An early stage is characterized by the development of sapphirine + quartz, spinel + quartz in textural equilibrium, and possible relicts after osumilite during peak metamorphic conditions. Sapphirine/spinel crystals were later detached from quartz in the form of mineral coronas. During a subsequent sapphirine-cordierite stage, several cordierite forming reactions reflect decreasingP-T conditions. Finally during the late stage, a few samples show evidence of retrogressive hydration. Sapphirine is rather iron-rich (12.8 wt%) and the Mg number in the analysed minerals varies in the order: cordierite > phlogopite > sapphirine > orthopyroxene > spinel > garnet.P-T conditions of metamorphism have been constrained through the application of geothermobarometry and thermodynamically calibrated MAS equilibria.P-T vectors from granulite facies rocks in the G. Madugula area indicate that the rocks experienced substantial decompression (up to 3 kbar) and moderate cooling (150–200°C) subsequent to peak conditions of metamorphism (8.4 kbar, > 900°C). The decompressionalP-T history of sapphirine granulites interpreted from textural features and thermobarometric estimates suggest that they may have eventually resulted from exhumation of thickened crust.  相似文献

The peridotitic and gabbroic rocks described occur a) as a tectonically emplaced layered body in Piton des Neiges volcano, b) as blocks in basaltic agglomerate, Piton des Neiges, and c) as nodular inclusions in lavas of both Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise volcanoes. All are associated with the olivine basalts of the early shield-forming growth stages and not later alkaline lavas, thereby contrasting with the Hawaiian situation. Rock-types include dunite, clinopyroxenite, wehrlite, feldspathic wehrlite, olivine eucrite, allivalite, (bytownite) anorthosite and gabbro. The peridotites and most of the gabbroic rocks are inferred to be cumulates formed in floored magma chambers occurring at depths from 30 km upwards. The inclusion suite is probably derived from repetitive layered units consisting predominantly of ol + sp cumulates with sporadic development of ol + cpx±sp and ol + cpx + plag cumulate horizons.  相似文献

Geological and petrological studies indicate that three phases of metabasic dykes are present in theTaipingzhai-Jinchangyu area within the high-grade metamorphic terrane of eastern Hebei. Garnet andhornblende in metabasic dykes of the second and third phases occur separately, forming two mineral aggregateareas gl+cpx+pl±hy and hb+cpx+pl-hy. P_(H_2O) in the rocks appears to be the main factor controlling theformation of the two aggregate areas. Both were formed simultaneously at the same metamorphic temperature. The second-phase basic dykes underwent metamorphism of pyroxene-granulite facies at a temperature ofsome 825C: later the dykes, together with the third-phase basic dykes experienced metamorphism ofamphibole-granulite facies at a temperature of about 750C under pressure of 0.9GPa.  相似文献
