We present the results of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) H  i line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of the galaxy quartet NGC 6845. The H  i emission extends over all four galaxies but can only be associated clearly with the two spiral galaxies, NGC 6845A and B, which show signs of strong tidal interaction. We derive a total H  i mass of at least  1.8 × 1010 M  , most of which is associated with NGC 6845A, the largest galaxy of the group. We investigate the tidal interaction between NGC 6845A and B by studying the kinematics of distinct H  i components and their relation to the known H  ii regions. No H  i emission is detected from the two lenticular galaxies, NGC 6845C and D. A previously uncatalogued dwarf galaxy, ATCA  J2001−4659  , was detected 4.4 arcmin NE from NGC 6845B and has an H  i mass of  ∼5 × 108 M  . No H  i bridge is visible between the group and its newly detected companion. Extended 20-cm radio continuum emission is detected in NGC 6845A and B as well as in the tidal bridge between the two galaxies. We derive star formation rates of  15–40 M yr−1  .  相似文献

NGC 3783 is a nearby SBa, type 1 Seyfert galaxy. We present H  i and radio continuum images of the galaxy made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We find that NGC 3783 has an H  i mass of 8.4×109 M, an H  i diameter of 1.9 D 0 ( D 0=37 kpc for h =0.5), and a nuclear depression in the H  i surface density. The H  i rotation curve is dominated by differential rotation, with little evidence of warping. The rotation curve suggests a mass-to-light ratio M L B =7.2 and a bar-pattern speed of 19±7 km s−1 kpc−1. The total mass of gas in the inner 50 arcsec is ≳10 per cent of the dynamical mass, and consistent with models that require significant gas content to fuel the Seyfert nucleus. There is no evidence that the nuclear activity in NGC 3783 is being stimulated by an interaction or merger: it may be a self-generated, perhaps bar-driven, process.  相似文献

We present H  i line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of the NGC 1511 galaxy group obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The data reveal an extended, rather disturbed H  i distribution for the peculiar starburst galaxy NGC 1511 and a narrow bridge to its small companion galaxy, NGC 1511B, which has been severely distorted by the interaction/collision between the two galaxies. No stellar counterpart to the gaseous bridge has been detected. In addition, we find that the peculiar optical ridge to the east of NGC 1511 is probably the stellar remnant of a galaxy completely disrupted by interactions with NGC 1511. The slightly more distant neighbour, NGC 1511A, shows a regular H  i velocity field and no obvious signs of interactions.
Radio continuum emission from NGC 1511 reveals three prominent sources on top of a more diffuse, extended distribution. We derive an overall star formation rate of  7 M yr−1  . The most enhanced star formation is found in the south-eastern part of the disc, coincident with several bright H  ii regions, and closest to the peculiar optical ridge. No continuum emission was detected in the companions, but NGC 1511B appears to show an H  ii region at its faint western edge, closest to NGC 1511. The group displays a prime example of interaction-induced star formation activity.  相似文献

We present multifrequency radio continuum as well as H  i observations of the superwind galaxy NGC 1482, with both the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and the Very Large Array (VLA). This galaxy has a remarkable hourglass-shaped optical emission-line outflow as well as bipolar soft X-ray bubbles on opposite sides of the galactic disc. The low-frequency, lower-resolution radio observations show a smooth structure. From the non-thermal emission, we estimate the available energy in supernovae, and examine whether this would be adequate to drive the observed superwind outflow. The high-frequency, high-resolution radio image of the central starburst region located at the base of the superwind bi-cone shows one prominent peak and more extended emission with substructure. This image has been compared with the infrared, optical red continuum, Hα, and soft and hard X-ray images from Chandra to understand the nature and relationship of the various features seen at different wavelengths. The peak of the infrared emission is the only feature that is coincident with the prominent radio peak, and possibly defines the centre of the galaxy.
The H  i observations with the GMRT show two blobs of emission on opposite sides of the central region. These are rotating about the centre of the galaxy and are located at ∼2.4 kpc from it. In addition, these observations also reveal a multicomponent H  i absorption profile against the central region of the radio source, with a total width of ∼250 km s−1. The extreme blue- and redshifted absorption components are at 1688 and 1942 km s−1, respectively, while the peak absorption is at 1836 km s−1. This is consistent with the heliocentric systemic velocity of  1850 ± 20 km s−1  , estimated from a variety of observations. We discuss possible implications of these results.  相似文献

This paper describes submm, 12CO (J = 2–1) observations of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 4490 and 4485, and together with high resolution H  i and multifrequency radio continuum data we investigate the evolution of the ISM in this system. We find the following. (i) The smaller member of the pair, NGC 4485, has had the atomic, molecular and dust components of its ISM stripped via ram pressure during its recent passage through the extended H  i distribution of NGC 4490. A bow-shock is identified in the H  i ahead of the stripped gas. (ii) Within the disc of NGC 4490 we find a very low H2-to-H  i ratio as well as a strong correlation between thermal emission and mass of H2 suggesting that the star formation rate is limited in this case by the conversion of H  i to H2. (iii) 12CO emission from an H  i and radio-continuum bridge between the two galaxies is detected.  相似文献

We present subarcsec angular resolution observations of the neutral gas in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 520. The central kpc region of NGC 520 contains an area of significantly enhanced star formation. The radio continuum structure of this region resolves into ∼10 continuum components. By comparing the flux densities of the brightest of these components at 1.4 GHz with published 15-GHz data we infer that these components detected at 1.4 and 1.6 GHz are related to the starburst and are most likely to be collections of several supernova remnants within the beam. None of these components is consistent with emission from an active galactic nuclei. Both neutral hydrogen (H  i ) and hydroxyl (OH) absorption lines are observed against the continuum emission, along with a weak OH maser feature probably related to the star formation activity in this galaxy. Strong H  i absorption  ( N H∼ 1022 atoms cm−2)  traces a velocity gradient of 0.5 km s−1 pc−1 across the central kpc of NGC 520. The H  i absorption velocity structure is consistent with the velocity gradients observed in both the OH absorption and in CO emission observations. The neutral gas velocity structure observed within the central kpc of NGC 520 is attributed to a kpc-scale ring or disc. It is also noted that the velocity gradients observed for these neutral gas components appear to differ with the velocity gradients observed from optical ionized emission lines. This apparent disagreement is discussed and attributed to the extinction of the optical emission from the actual centre of this source hence implying that optical ionized emission lines are only detected from regions with significantly different radii to those sampled by the observations presented here.  相似文献

We present both observations and modelling of the atomic hydrogen in the closely interacting galaxies NGC 3395 and 3396. The observations were made with the VLA in both C- and D-arrays. We detect a large 'tail' of H  i extending to a projected distance of 63 kpc (10 arcmin) south-west of the pair, as well as two smaller galaxies, IC 2604, 14 arcmin to the south-west, and IC 2608, 14 arcmin to the south-east. However, these galaxies appear to have had at most a minor influence on the dynamics of NGC 3395/6. By means of N -body simulation we show that the tail is gas that has been stripped from NGC 3395 during a prograde encounter with NGC 3396, and that the pair has had one previous close approach. It is shown that the galaxies are within 5 × 107 yr of their second perigalactic passage. Comparison of the time-scales for starburst activity with those from the simulations shows that the current starbursts are a result of the current close approach and not the first one. The interaction between NGC 3395 and 3396 has flattened the rotation curve of NGC 3396 owing to the parameters of the interaction. This naturally explains the more nucleated radio continuum structure observed in this galaxy, as significant infall and a subsequent central starburst would be expected in this scenario. The velocity structure and line profiles of the H  i are best explained if both cloud–cloud collisions between the two gas discs and tidal forces have been important.  相似文献

We have used the Swedish ESO Submillimeter Telescope to observe the molecular gas in the Circinus galaxy using the CO(1 → 0) transition as a tracer. The central region and major axis have been mapped and several other points were also observed. The gas in the galaxy is concentrated towards the nucleus, the peak being coincident with the radio/optical core. The inclination of the molecular galactic disc is more comparable to that of the radio continuum than to that of the large-scale H  i emission. Evidence for an anomalous spur structure pointing radially away from the galactic centre is presented, and may indicate a causal link between it and similar features seen in optical lines and radio continuum. Our data suggest the presence of a central molecular ring or disc with radius 300 ± 50 pc and a rotation velocity of about 200 km s−1 (assuming i  = 73°). The dynamical mass of the nucleus is estimated to be no greater than 3.9 × 109 M. Assuming that the distribution of gas varies smoothly in the outer regions, we calculate the mass of molecular gas in the galaxy to be at least M mol = 1.1 × 109 M, and the star-forming efficiency to be 11 ± 2 L M−1. These results imply that Circinus is undergoing a massive central starburst which may be, at least partially, responsible for its extended minor axis emission seen in several wavebands.  相似文献

We present 0.15-arcsec (25-pc) resolution MERLIN observations of neutral hydrogen absorption detected towards the nuclear region of the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 5929. Absorption is detected only towards the north-eastern radio component with a column density of (6.5 ± 0.6) × 1021 cm−2. Based on comparison with an HST WFPC2 continuum image, we propose that the absorption is caused by a 1.5-arcsec structure of neutral gas and dust offset 0.3 arcsec south-east of the nucleus and running NE–SW. A separate cloud of dust is apparent 1.5 arcsec to the south-west of the nucleus in the HST image. A comparison of the centroid velocity (2358 ± 5 km s−1) and full width at half-maximum (43 ± 6 km s−1) of the absorbing gas with previous [O  III ] observations suggests that both the neutral and ionized gas are undergoing galactic rotation towards the observer in the north-east and away from the observer in the south-west. The main structure is consistent with an inclined ring of gas and dust encircling the active galactic nucleus (AGN); alternatively it may be a bar or inner spiral arm. We do not detect neutral hydrogen absorption or dust obscuration against the radio nucleus (column density < 3.1 × 1021 cm−2) expected by a torus of neutral gas and dust in unified models of AGNs for a type 2 Seyfert galaxy.  相似文献

We present the results of new radio interferometer H  i line observations for the merging galaxy pair NGC 4038/9 ('The Antennae'), obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The results improve substantially with respect to those of van der Hulst and show in detail the two merging galactic discs and the two tidal tails produced by their interaction. The small edge-on spiral dwarf galaxy ESO 572–G045 is also seen near the tip of the southern tail, but distinct from it. It shows no signs of tidal interaction. The northern tidal tail of the Antennae shows no H  i connection to the discs and has an extension towards the west. The southern tidal tail is continuous, with a prominent H  i concentration at its tip, roughly at the location of the tidal dwarf galaxy observed optically by Mirabel, Dottori & Lutz. Clear velocity structure is seen along the tidal tails and in the galactic discs. Radio continuum images at 20 and 13 cm are also presented, showing the discs in detail.  相似文献

We present radio observations and optical spectroscopy of the giant low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy PGC 045080 (or 1300+0144). PGC 045080 is a moderately distant galaxy having a highly inclined optical disc and massive H  i gas content. Radio continuum observations of the galaxy were carried out at 320, 610 MHz and 1.4 GHz. Continuum emission was detected and mapped in the galaxy. The emission appears extended over the inner disc at all three frequencies. At 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz it appears to have two distinct lobes. We also did optical spectroscopy of the galaxy nucleus; the spectrum did not show any strong emission lines associated with active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity but the presence of a weak AGN cannot be ruled out. Furthermore, comparison of the Hα flux and radio continuum at 1.4 GHz suggests that a significant fraction of the emission is non-thermal in nature. Hence we conclude that a weak or hidden AGN may be present in PGC 045080. The extended radio emission represents lobes/jets from the AGN. These observations show that although LSB galaxies are metal poor and have very little star formation, their centres can host significant AGN activity. We also mapped the H  i gas disc and velocity field in PGC 045080. The H  i disc extends well beyond the optical disc and appears warped. In the H  i intensity maps, the disc appears distinctly lopsided. The velocity field is disturbed on the lopsided side of the disc but is fairly uniform in the other half. We derived the H  i rotation curve for the galaxy from the velocity field. The rotation curve has a flat rotation speed of ∼190 km s−1.  相似文献

We present observations of H i in the nearby interacting galaxies NGC 4490 and 4485 made with the VLA in both C and D arrays. The galaxies are embedded in an extensive envelope of neutral hydrogen which is elongated in a direction approximately perpendicular to the plane of NGC 4490, with an extent of about 56 kpc. We argue that this distribution of neutral hydrogen can best be explained by a galactic-scale bipolar outflow of H  i driven by supernovae in NGC 4490. The flow from the disc appears to be reasonably well collimated and has probably persisted for approximately 6 × 108 yr. The implications for galaxy evolution when such mass loss occurs are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We present new continuum VLA observations of the nearby Sy 1.5 galaxy NGC 5033, made at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz on 2003 April 8. Combined with VLA archival observations at 1.4- and 4.9-GHz made on 1993 August 7, 1999 August 29 and 1999 October 31, we sample the galaxy radio emission at scales ranging from the nuclear regions (≲100 pc) to the outer regions of the disc (∼40 kpc). The high-resolution VLA images show a core–jet structure for the Sy 1.5 nucleus. While the core has a moderately steep non-thermal radio spectrum ( S ν∝να; α4.91.5≈−0.4), the inner kpc region shows a steeper spectrum (α8.41.5≈−0.9). This latter spectrum is typical of galaxies where energy losses are high, indicating that the escape rate of cosmic ray electrons in NGC 5033 is low. The nucleus contributes little to the total 1.4-GHz radio power of NGC 5033 and, based on the radio to far-infrared (FIR) relation, it appears that the radio and FIR emission from NGC 5033 are dominated by a starburst that during the last 10 Myr produced stars at a rate of 2.8 M yr−1 yielding a supernova (type Ib/c and II) rate of 0.045 yr−1. This supernova rate corresponds to about 1 SN event every 22 yr. Finally, from our deep 8.4-GHz VLA-D image, we suggest the existence of a radio spur in NGC 5033, which could have been due to a hot superbubble formed as a consequence of sequential supernova explosions occurring during the lifetime of a giant molecular cloud.  相似文献

We present new observations at three frequencies (326, 615 and 1281 MHz) of the radio lobe spiral galaxy, NGC 3079, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. These observations are consistent with previous data obtained at other telescopes and reveal the structure of the nuclear radio lobes in exquisite detail. In addition, new features are observed, some with H  i counterparts, showing broad-scale radio continuum emission and extensions. The galaxy is surrounded by a radio halo that is at least 4.8 kpc in height. Two giant radio extensions/loops are seen on either side of the galaxy out to ∼11 kpc from the major axis, only slightly offset from the direction of the smaller nuclear radio lobes. If these are associated with the nuclear outflow, then the galaxy has experienced episodic nuclear activity. Emission along the southern major axis suggests motion through a local intergalactic medium (not yet detected), and it may be that NGC 3079 is itself creating this local intergalactic gas via outflows. We also present maps of the minimum energy parameters for this galaxy, including cosmic ray energy density, electron diffusion length, magnetic field strength, particle lifetime and power.  相似文献

We present and discuss optical, near-infrared and H  i measurements of the galaxy Markarian 1460 at a distance of 19 Mpc in the Ursa Major Cluster. This low-luminosity ( M B =−14) galaxy is unusual because (i) it is blue ( B − R =0.8) and has the spectrum of an H  ii galaxy, (ii) it has a light profile that is smooth and well fitted by an r 1/4 and not an exponential function at all radii larger than the seeing, and (iii) it has an observed central brightness of about μ B =20 mag arcsec−2 , intermediate between those of elliptical galaxies (on the bright μ B side) and normal low-luminosity dwarf irregular (on the low μ B side) galaxies. No other known galaxy exhibits all these properties in conjunction. On morphological grounds this galaxy looks like a normal distant luminous elliptical galaxy, since the Fundamental Plane tells us that higher luminosity normal elliptical galaxies tend to have lower surface-brightnesses. Markarian 1460 has 2×107 M of H  i and a ratio M (H  i )/ L B of 0.2, which is low compared to the typical values for star-forming dwarf galaxies. From the high surface-brightness and r 1/4 profile, we infer that the baryonic component of Markarian 1460 has become self-gravitating through dissipative processes. From the colours, radio continuum, H  i and optical emission line properties, and yet smooth texture, we infer that Markarian 1460 has had significant star formation as recently as ∼1 Gyr ago but not today.  相似文献

We report on a search for atomic hydrogen holes and shells in the nearby starburst galaxy M82, using high angular resolution (∼1.3 arcsec) VLA H  i absorption observations. From this study, we have detected four H  i shells in the central kiloparsec of M82. The sizes of these shells (∼30–50 pc) are smaller than those of the majority of shells observed in the Large Magellanic Cloud, although the M82 shells have higher expansion velocities (∼30 km s−1) and typical kinetic energies of  1051–1052 erg  . Because our observations were made in absorption, strong selection effects are present which hinder the detection of shells that could be present outside, or behind, the extended radio continuum associated with the starburst. Nevertheless, our detection of four shells in M82 actually represents a higher density of shells per unit area compared with the Large Magellanic Cloud.
We also discuss the gas dynamics in the central kiloparsec of M82, and discuss the velocity structure of gas in a barred potential and in wind-driven shells. We conclude that in M82 the observed gas dynamics are most likely a superposition of both effects.  相似文献

Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen converts the UV continuum around Lyβ into optical continuum around Hα, and the basic atomic physics has been discussed in several works on symbiotic stars. We propose that the same process may operate in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and calculate the linear polarization of the broad emission lines Raman-scattered by high-column neutral hydrogen component. The conversion efficiency of the Raman scattering process is discussed and the expected scattered flux is computed using the spectral energy distribution of an AGN given by a typical power law. The high-column H  i component in AGN is suggested by many observations, encompassing the radio through UV and X-ray ranges.   When neutral hydrogen component with a column density ∼1022 cm−2 is present around the active nucleus, it is found that the scattered Hα is characterized by a very broad width ∼20 000 km s−1 and that the strength of the polarized flux is comparable to that of the electron-scattered flux expected from a conventional unified model of narrow-line AGN. The width of the scattered flux is mainly determined by the column density of the neutral scatterers where the total scattering optical depth becomes of order unity. The asymmetry in the Raman scattering cross-section around Lyβ introduces red asymmetric polarized profiles around Hα. The effects of the blended Lyβ and O  vi 1034 doublet are also investigated.   We briefly discuss the spectropolarimetric observations performed on the Seyfert galaxy IRAS 110548-1131 and the narrow line radio galaxy Cyg A. Several predictions regarding the scattering by the high-column neutral hydrogen component in AGN are discussed.  相似文献

We present Chandra , Very Large Array (VLA) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the nucleus of NGC 4696, a giant elliptical in the Centaurus cluster of galaxies. Like M87 in the Virgo cluster, PKS 1246−410 in the Centaurus cluster is a nearby example of a radio galaxy in a dense cluster environment. In analysing the new X-ray data, we have found a compact X-ray feature coincident with the optical and radio core. While nuclear emission from the X-ray source is expected, its luminosity is low,  <1040 erg s−1  . We estimate the Bondi accretion radius to be 30 pc and the accretion rate to be  0.01 M yr−1  , which under the canonical radiative efficiency of 10 per cent would overproduce by 3.5 orders of magnitude the radiative luminosity. Much of this energy can be directed into the kinetic energy of the jet, which over time inflates the observed cavities seen in the thermal gas. The VLBA observations reveal a weak nucleus and a broad, one-sided jet extending over 25 pc in position angle −150°. This jet is deflected on the kiloparsec-scale to a more east–west orientation (position angle of −80°).  相似文献

We have observed broad H  i absorption in the radio galaxy 3C 293 using Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometric Network (MERLIN) at 0.2-arcsec angular resolution and the Giant Meterwavelength Radio Telescope (GMRT) at arcsec resolution. Extensive H  i is found in absorption across the centre of this peculiar radio galaxy, allowing a detailed study of the dynamics of the neutral gas on linear scales down to ∼160 pc. In optical depth position–velocity diagrams across the central few kpc we detect a distinct velocity gradient of 179 km s−1 arcsec−1 associated with the broad absorption. This is interpreted as a ring of neutral gas rotating around the suspected position of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) . The radius of this high velocity gradient ring is found to be >0.74 arcsec (600 pc), implying an upper limit upon the enclosed mass of     , assuming a near edge-on disc with an inclination of i . The optical depth of H  i is mapped across the entire central region of 3C 293 showing enhancements of a factor of 4 in the areas that are co-spatial with dust lanes seen in Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) imaging of this galaxy.  相似文献

Using MERLIN with 0.2-arcsec resolution we have observed neutral hydrogen absorption against the central region of the starburst galaxy NGC 3628. The central region resolves into ∼16 continuum components at 1.4 GHz. From comparison with published 15-GHz data, we infer that these components are supernova remnants, although three components may be consistent with a weak active galactic nucleus. Neutral hydrogen absorption is seen against the continuum emission with column densities ∼1022 cm−2. The absorption appears to be from two separate absorbing structures. Assuming a simple morphology, the main velocity structure can be attributed to a ring of neutral gas with a radius 130 pc rotating around a central starburst with a velocity gradient of 1270 km s−1 kpc−1. From simple assumptions, the mass interior to this ring is 0.9 × 109 M. The second absorption structure may represent outflow from the starburst region or a large-scale galactic structure. Alternatively the absorption structure may be non-axisymmetric, such as a bar.  相似文献
