The galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 is observed to be in one of two X-ray spectral states: either the low/hard (low soft X-ray flux and a flat power-law tail) or high/soft (high blackbody-like soft X-ray flux and a steep power-law tail) state. The physical origin of these two states is unclear. We present here a model of an ionized accretion disc, the spectrum of which is blurred by relativistic effects, and fit it to the ASCA , Ginga and EXOSAT data of Cygnus X-1 in both spectral states. We confirm that relativistic blurring provides a much better fit to the low/hard state data and, contrary to some previous results, find the data of both states to be consistent with an ionized thin accretion disc with a reflected fraction of unity extending to the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole. Our model is an alternative to those that, in the low/hard state, require the accretion disc to be truncated at a few tens of Schwarzschild radii, within which there is a Thomson-thin, hot accretion flow. We suggest a mechanism that may cause the changes in spectral state.  相似文献

Multicolour photometry of the polar AM Her was obtained during 3 observational seasons (1994/95/96). The star was in its high state for most of the observations. It was in its low state in '96 April. It was established that these two states differ not only in the average light level but in the larger amplitudes of variations at low state than at high state. Moreover the energy distributions of the two states differ in the stronger dependence of the flux on ν at high state than at low state. The Fourier analysis of the photometric data shows variability with the spectroscopic (orbital) period. The amplitudes of this variability in all colours are about two times bigger at low state than at high state. An attempt to explain the photometric behaviour of AM Her by a model of dominant emission of two hot spots at the magnetic poles of the white dwarf was made and the spot parameters were determined. The short high state in Her X-1 was observed with good coverage and good sensitivity with the Ginga LAC in 1989. These observations have so far not been analysed in any detail. Here are reported the results of analyses of the light curves and spectra from this data set. The spectral model has absorbed and unabsorbed components. The behaviour of these two components during the short high state indicates a spatially extended continuum source. The iron-line intensity is linearly dependent on the total intensity, indicating that the total intensity is reprocessed emission. The equivalent width of ≃0.7 keV is consistent with an illuminated disc geometry, with most of the radiation of the central source (the pulsar) blocked from the observer's view. An extended ingress is seen which is a persistent feature during the short high state. The ingress duration gives a source size of ∼3×109 cm, corresponding to the inner disc.  相似文献

We report the results of a two-month campaign conducted with the Chandra X-ray observatory to monitor the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5204 X-1. This was composed of a 50-ks observation, followed by ten 5-ks follow-ups spaced initially at ∼3, then at ∼10-d intervals. The ULX flux is seen to vary by factors ∼5 on time-scales of a few days, but no strong variability is seen on time-scales shorter than an hour. There is no evidence for a periodic signal in the X-ray data. An examination of the X-ray colour variations over the period of the campaign shows the ULX emission consistently becomes spectrally harder as its flux increases. The X-ray spectrum from the 50-ks observation can be fitted by a number of disparate spectral models, all of which describe a smooth continuum with, unusually for a ULX, a broad emission feature evident at 0.96 keV. The spectral variations, both within the 50-ks observation and over the course of the whole campaign, can then be explained solely by variations in the continuum component. In the context of an optically thick corona model (as found in other recent results for ULXs) the spectral variations can be explained by the heating of the corona as the luminosity of the ULX increases, consistent with the behaviour of at least one Galactic black hole system in the strongly Comptonized very high state. We find no new evidence supporting the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole in this ULX.  相似文献

We present evidence of flux variability, on both short (hours) and long (months) time-scales, of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7172. These results are based on the ASCA observation of NGC 7172 performed in 1996 May. The source was detected at a rather low flux level, about 3 times fainter than its usual state (including 1 yr before, when it was also observed by ASCA ).   The source also varied by about 30 per cent during the observation, confirming the presence of a type 1 nucleus in its centre. However, its spectrum appears to be flatter than the typical Seyfert 1 spectrum (in agreement with findings on other Seyfert 2s), posing problems for the unification model unless complex absorption is invoked.  相似文献

The black hole candidate Cyg X-1 was observed in ultra low state on march 30, 1997 using Large Area Scintillation counter Experiment (LASE) in the hard X-ray energy region of 20–180 keV. During the 30 minute exposure a combined signal of 68 sigma was obtained, however, the measured flux at 50 keV was lower by a factor of 2 than the minimum flux reported so far. Using the recent orbital ephemeris of the source, our snap-shot observations were made at ϕ5.6 = 0.915, which corresponds to the binary minimum revealed by the ASM light curves. The daily average data from the BATSE detectors give the source intensity level to be higher by a factor of 5. Very low flux values measured in the present experiment suggest that the hard X-ray source may have been partially occulted by the primary companion during its transit near the X-ray minimum.  相似文献

The paper presents an evidence for a steady-state flux of high-energy photons from Her X-1. The results are obtained from the analysis of the existing spectral measurements of the X-ray source. The continuum emission has three times more energy than that emitted during the pulse mode. An analysis of the publicly available Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE ) archive on Her X-1, including data on 23 34.85-d cycles, is performed. The turn-on times for these cycles are determined. The number of cycles with a duration of 20.5 orbits has been found to be much larger than the number of shorter (20 orbits) or longer (21 orbits) cycles. A correlation between the duration of a cycle and its mean X-ray flux is noted. The mean X-ray light curve shows a very distinct short on-state. The anomalous X-ray absorption dip is found during the first orbit, after the turn-on in the main on-state for the cycles starting near the binary phase 0.25, and is present during two successive orbits in the low on-state. The post-eclipse recovery feature has not been found in the main on-state but appears at least for two orbits during the low on-state. The pre-eclipse dips are present in both main and low on-states and demonstrate a behaviour like that of early observations. The comparison of durations of the main and short on-states enables us to constrain the accretion disc semithickness and its inclination to the orbital plane.  相似文献

We analyze the observations of the X-ray pulsar LMCX-4 performed by the INTEGRAL observatory and the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) of the RXTE observatory over a wide energy range. The observed hard X-ray flux from the source is shown to change by more than a factor of 50 (from ~70 mCrab in the high state to ~1.3 mCrab in the low state) on the time scale of the accretion-disk precession period, whose mean value for 1996–2004 was determined with a high accuracy, Pprec = 30.275 ± 0.004 days. In the low state, a flare about 10 h in duration was detected from the source; the flux from the source increased by more than a factor of 4 during this flare. The shape of the pulsar’s broadband spectrum is essentially invariable with its intensity; no statistically significant features associated with the possible resonance cyclotron absorption line were found in the spectrum of the source.  相似文献

Results of the analysis of four balloon observations of Cyg X-1 in the energy range 20–200 keV are reported. Long term time variability of the flux is confirmed and is estimated to amount to a factor 1.5–2. The source appears to remain in a state of lower flux for longer times. No obvious correlation with the low energy behaviour following the transition detected by Uhuru is found.  相似文献

We present Swift observations of the black hole X-ray transient, GRO J1655−40, during the recent outburst. With its multiwavelength capabilities and flexible scheduling, Swift is extremely well suited for monitoring the spectral evolution of such an event. GRO J1655−40 was observed on 20 occasions and data were obtained by all instruments for the majority of epochs. X-ray spectroscopy revealed spectral shapes consistent with the 'canonical' low/hard, high/soft and very high states at various epochs. The soft X-ray source (0.3–10 keV) rose from quiescence and entered the low/hard state, when an iron emission line was detected. The soft X-ray source then softened and decayed, before beginning a slow rebrightening and then spending ∼3 weeks in the very high state. The hard X-rays (14–150 keV) behaved similarly but their peaks preceded those of the soft X-rays by up to a few days; in addition, the average hard X-ray flux remained approximately constant during the slow soft X-ray rebrightening, increasing suddenly as the source entered the very high state. These observations indicate (and confirm previous suggestions) that the low/hard state is key to improving our understanding of the outburst trigger and mechanism. The optical/ultraviolet light curve behaved very differently from that of the X-rays; this might suggest that the soft X-ray light curve is actually a composite of the two known spectral components, one gradually increasing with the optical/ultraviolet emission (accretion disc) and the other following the behaviour of the hard X-rays (jet and/or corona).  相似文献

We report the first observation of a transient relativistic jet from the canonical black hole candidate, Cygnus X-1, obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN). The jet was observed in only one of six epochs of MERLIN imaging of the source during a phase of repeated X-ray spectral transitions in 2004 Jan–Feb, and this epoch corresponded to the softest 1.5–12 keV X-ray spectrum. With only a single epoch revealing the jet, we cannot formally constrain its velocity. Nevertheless, several lines of reasoning suggest that the jet was probably launched 0.5–4.0 d before this brightening, corresponding to projected velocities of  0.2 c ≲ v app≲ 1.6 c   , and an intrinsic velocity of  ≳0.3 c   . We also report the occurrence of a major radio flare from Cyg X-1, reaching a flux density of ∼120 mJy at 15 GHz, and yet not associated with any resolvable radio emission, despite a concerted effort with MERLIN. We discuss the resolved jet in terms of the recently proposed 'unified model' for the disc–jet coupling in black hole X-ray binaries, and tentatively identify the 'jet line' for Cyg X-1. The source is consistent with the model in the sense that a steady jet appears to persist initially when the X-ray spectrum starts softening, and that once the spectral softening is complete the core radio emission is suppressed and transient ejecta/shock observed. However, there are some anomalies, and Cyg X-1 clearly does not behave like a normal black hole transient in progressing to the canonical soft/thermal state once the ejection event has happened.  相似文献

We present spectral variations of the binary X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 observed with the RXTE/PCA during different phases of its 30.5 day long third period. Only out-of-eclipse data were used for this study. The 3–25 keV spectrum, modeled with high energy cut-off power-law and iron line emission is found to show strong dependence on the intensity state. Correlations between the Fe line emission flux and different parameters of the continuum are presented here.  相似文献

Using data from the XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observatories, we have detected a cutoff at energies above 10 keV in the X-ray spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray sources HoIX X-1 and M82 X-1. The spectra obtained can be described by amodel of Comptonization of radiation in a gas cloud of moderate temperature (kT ~ 2–3 keV) and high optical depth (τ ~ 15–25). Such conditions can be fulfilled during supercritical accretion of matter onto a stellar-mass black hole accompanied by a strong gas outflow. The results of this work confirm the existence of a spectral state specific to ultraluminous X-ray sources, which is unlike any of the known spectral states in normal X-ray binaries.  相似文献

The hydrogen column density along the line of sight to Cyg X-1 is 7×1021 cm–2 as determined from the extinction of its optical counterpart HD 226 868. This value may be used to interpret soft X-ray measurements, including those previously reported, where it is not possible to determine the column density independently from the intrinsic spectral function. The correction for interstellar absorption is larger than previously thought. Application to an old observation suggests that an intense soft X-ray component was present in Cyg X-1, even though the data at 1 keV suggests that it was probably in a low state. Previous observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE ) have suggested that the power spectral density (PSD) of NGC 3783 flattens to a slope near zero at low frequencies, in a similar manner to that of Galactic black hole X-ray binary systems (GBHs) in the 'hard' state. The low radio flux emitted by this object, however, is inconsistent with a hard state interpretation. The accretion rate of NGC 3783 (∼7 per cent of the Eddington rate) is similar to that of other active galactic nuclei (AGN) with 'soft'-state PSDs and higher than that at which the GBH Cyg X-1, with which AGN are often compared, changes between 'hard' and 'soft' states (∼2 per cent of the Eddington rate). If NGC 3783 really does have a 'hard'-state PSD, it would be quite unusual and would indicate that AGN and GBHs are not quite as similar as we currently believe. Here we present an improved X-ray PSD of NGC 3783, spanning from ∼10−8 to ∼10−3 Hz, based on considerably extended (5.5 yr) RXTE observations combined with two orbits of continuous observation by XMM–Newton . We show that this PSD is, in fact, well fitted by a 'soft' state model which has only one break, at high frequencies. Although a 'hard'-state model can also fit the data, the improvement in fit by adding a second break at low frequency is not significant. Thus NGC 3783 is not unusual. These results leave Arakelian 564 as the only AGN which shows a second break at low frequencies, although in that case the very high accretion rate implies a 'very high', rather than 'hard' state PSD. The break frequency found in NGC 3783 is consistent with the expectation based on comparisons with other AGN and GBHs, given its black hole mass and accretion rate.  相似文献

The X-ray and γ-ray flux densities of 18 γ-loud BL Lac objects as well as their average spectral indices of X-ray wave band (1 keV) and γ-ray wave band (>100 MeV) are collected, and the correlations among the various quantities are examined. The results indicate: (1) The X-ray flux density and the γ-ray flux density exhibit rather strong correlations in all the states, high, low or mediate. (2) Between the mean spectral indices in X-ray and γ-ray wave bands there is a comparatively intense anti-correlation. (3) Between the average spectral indices and the X-ray and γ- flux densities there is no evident correlation either in the high or the mediate state. (4) Between the average spectral index of γ-ray wave band and the flux density of X-rays in low state there is a rather strong anticorrelation. Between the mean spectral index of X-ray wave band and the γ-flux density in low state there also exists a weak correlation. The results of our analysis support the viewpoint that both the X-ray and γ-ray emissions of BL Lac objects come from the synchrotron radiation and synchrotron self Compton (SSC) radiation with one and the same distribution of relativistic electrons.  相似文献

We have investigated the long-term flux variation in Cen X-3 using orbital modulation and pulsed fraction in different flux states using observations made with the All-Sky Monitor and the Proportional Counter Array on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer . In the high state, the eclipse ingress and egress are found to be sharp whereas in the intermediate state the transitions are more gradual. In the low state, instead of eclipse ingress and egress, the light curve shows a smooth flux variation with orbital phase. The orbital modulation of the X-ray light curve in the low state shows that the X-ray emission observed in this state is from an extended object. The flux-dependent orbital modulations indicate that the different flux states of Cen X-3 are primarily due to varying degree of obscuration. Measurement of the pulsed fraction in different flux states is consistent with the X-ray emission of Cen X-3 having one highly varying component with a constant pulsed fraction and an unpulsed component and in the low state, the unpulsed component becomes dominant. The observed X-ray emission in the low state is likely to be due to scattering of X-rays from the stellar wind of the companion star. Though we cannot ascertain the origin and nature of the obscuring material that causes the aperiodic long-term flux variation, we point out that a precessing accretion disc driven by radiative forces is a distinct possibility.  相似文献

We present a detailed classification of the X-ray states of Cyg X-3 based on the spectral shape and a new classification of the radio states based on the long-term correlated behaviour of the radio and soft X-ray light curves. We find a sequence of correlations, starting with a positive correlation between the radio and soft X-ray fluxes in the hard spectral state, changing to a negative one at the transition to soft spectral states. The temporal evolution can be in either direction on that sequence, unless the source goes into a very weak radio state, from which it can return only following a major radio flare. The flare decline is via relatively bright radio states, which results in a hysteresis loop on the flux–flux diagram. We also study the hard X-ray light curve, and find its overall anticorrelation with the soft X-rays. During major radio flares, the radio flux responds exponentially to the level of a hard X-ray high-energy tail. We also specify the detailed correspondence between the radio states and the X-ray spectral states. We compare our results to those of black hole and neutron star binaries. Except for the effect of strong absorption and the energy of the high-energy break in the hard state, the X-ray spectral states of Cyg X-3 closely correspond to the canonical X-ray states of black hole binaries. Also, the radio/X-ray correlation closely corresponds to that found in black hole binaries, but it significantly differs from that in neutron star binaries. Overall, our results strongly support the presence of a black hole in Cyg X-3.  相似文献

When observed by XMM–Newton in 2003, the type 1.5 quasi-stellar object 2MASS 0918+2117 was found to be in a low state, with an X-ray flux approximately four to five times fainter than during an earlier Chandra observation. The 2–6 keV spectrum was unusually hard (photon index  Γ∼ 1.25  ), with evidence for a reflection-dominated continuum, while a soft excess visible below ∼1 keV prevented confirmation of the anticipated low energy absorber. In a second XMM–Newton observation in 2005, the X-ray flux is found to have recovered, with a 2–10 keV continuum spectrum now typical of a broad-line active galaxy  (Γ∼ 2)  and a deficit of flux below ∼1 keV indicative of continuum absorption in a column   N H∼ 4 × 1021 cm−2  . We find the preferred ionization state of the absorbing gas to be low, which then leaves a residual soft excess of similar spectral form and flux to that found in the 2003 XMM–Newton observation. Although observed at different epochs, we note that dust in the absorbing column could also explain the red nucleus and strong optical polarization of 2MASS 0918+2117.  相似文献
