Results from optical photometric observations of the pre-main sequence star GM Cep are reported in the paper. The star is located in the field of the young open cluster Trumpler 37—a region of active star formation. GM Cep shows a large amplitude rapid variability interpreted as a possible outburst from EXor type in previous studies. Our data from BVRI CCD photometric observations of the star are collected from June 2008 to February 2011 in Rozhen observatory (Bulgaria) and Skinakas observatory (Crete, Greece). A sequence of sixteen comparison stars in the field of GM Cep was calibrated in the BVRI bands. Our photometric data for a 2.5 years period show a high amplitude variations ($\Delta V \sim2\mbox{$\Delta V \sim2\mbox{) and two deep minimums in brightness are observed. The analysis of collected multicolor photometric data shows the typical of UX Ori variables a color reversal during the minimums in brightness. On the other hand, high amplitude rapid variations in brightness typical for the Classical T Tauri stars also present on the light curve of GM Cep. Comparing our results with results published in the literature, we conclude that changes in brightness are caused by superposition of both: (1) magnetically channeled accretion from the circumstellar disk, and (2) occultation from circumstellar clouds of dust or from features of a circumstellar disk.  相似文献

We present our 2-year-long photometric (V, R c, I c) observations of the T Tauri star V1184 Tau. They show that the relatively quiet “photometric life” of this object, which ended in 2004 with a sharp brightness decline by four magnitudes, was succeeded by a qualitatively new (in nature) period of activity characterized by high-amplitude irregular photometric variability. Judging by its color variations, the object belongs to the class of UX Ori stars and, hence, variable circumstellar extinction is responsible for its brightness variations. Moreover, the (V?I c)/V color-magnitude diagram for the object is identical to that for UX Ori itself, suggesting that the optical properties of dust grains in the circumstellar space of these stars are similar. At the same time, V1184 Tau is quite dissimilar to UX Ori stars in its light curve, variability amplitude (reaching 4.5 magnitudes in the V band), and some other parameters.  相似文献

Radical readjustments in the photometric activity of young stars owing to sudden changes in the circumstellar extinction are discussed using the light curves of two UX Ori type stars, CQ Tau and V1184 Tau, as examples. Changes of this sort can be caused by large deviations from axial symmetry in the distribution of circumstellar dust, as well as by large variations in the mass accretion rate in circumstellar disks. We have calculated the circumstellar extinction curves produced by dust grains which absorb and scatter the stellar radiation in the shells of pre-main-sequence stars. A Monte Carlo method was used to model the radiative transfer in non-spherical shells. The dependence on the particle size distribution and the dust shell parameters has been examined.The application of the theoretical results to explain the extinction and polarization of the Herbig Be star HD 45677 shows that the dust shell is not disk-like and that very small grains are absent in it.  相似文献

We present the results of our infrared JHK photometry for the unusual UX Ori star V1184 Tau. Comparison with previous observations performed before the catastrophic decline in its optical brightness in 2004 (when the star faded approximately by a factor of 100) has shown the following: the star faded approximately by 2 m and 1 m in the J and H bands, respectively, while its K brightness remained almost constant. This pattern of infrared variability seems incompatible with the mechanism of variable circumstellar extinction responsible for the dramatic decline in the star’s optical brightness. However, if this mechanism is considered in the context of an accretion disk model with a puffed-up inner rim in the dust sublimation zone and with a disk wind producing an expanding gas-dust atmosphere above the disk surface, then the paradox can be resolved. In this model, the photometric activity of V1184 Tau in both visible and near-infrared spectral ranges, including the sharp brightness decline in 2004, can be explained by an increase in the geometric thickness of the disk in the dust sublimation zone caused by enhanced accretion of circumstellar matter onto the star. There is reason to believe that such events occur periodically and result from the presence of a companion to V1184 Tau moving in a highly eccentric orbit. The offered interpretation of the photometric activity of V1184 Tau allows this object to be classified as an UX Ori star based on the observed photometric effect and, at the same time, as a FU Ori star based on the pattern of the physical process that produced this effect.  相似文献

We present new high- and low-resolution spectroscopic and photometric data of nine members of the young association CMa R1. All the stars have circumstellar dust at some distance, as could be expected from their association with reflection nebulosity. Four stars (HD 52721, HD 53367, LkH α  220 and LkH α  218) show H α emission and we argue that they are Herbig Be stars with discs. Our photometric and spectroscopic observations of these stars reveal new characteristics of their variability. We present first interpretations of the variability of HD 52721, HD 53367 and the two LkH α stars in terms of a partially eclipsing binary, a magnetic activity cycle and circumstellar dust variations, respectively. The remaining five stars show no clear indications of H α emission in their spectra, although their spectral types and ages are comparable with those of HD 52721 and HD 53367. This indicates that the presence of a disc around a star in CMa R1 may depend on the environment of the star. In particular we find that all H α emission stars are located at or outside the arc-shaped border of the H  ii region, which suggests that the stars inside the arc have lost their discs through evaporation by UV photons from nearby O stars, or from the nearby (<25 pc) supernova, about 1 Myr ago.  相似文献

We present new results of our photometry for the Herbig Be star HD 52721 obtained from January 16 to March 25, 2013. A new data reduction technique is used. Using this technique, we have also reanalyzed the previous results of our photometry for this object pertaining to the period from March 7 to March 28, 2010. The Be star HD 52721 is known as an eclipsing variable with the period P = 1d. 610. Two photometric minima observed during one period are a peculiarity of its photometric variability. They are separated in phase of the period P by 0.5 and differ from one another in depth by 0 m . 04. We have also detected additional minima observed at the phases of maximum brightness. We hypothesize that they can be associated with the existence of local azimuthal inhomogeneities rotating synchronously with the orbital motion of the binary component stars in the circumstellar envelope. When processing our CCD frames, we have applied an efficient CCD-frame rejection method that has allowed the accuracy of observations to be increased considerably. The CCD frames have been further processed using the Apex II software package, which is a universal software platform for astronomical image processing. We justify the need for additional photometric observations of HD 52721 in various color bands to confirm the hypothesis about the existence of azimuthal inhomogeneities in the program binary system and to analyze their physical properties.  相似文献

In the course of photopolarimetric monitoring of the Herbig Ae star WW Vul, an unusual variation of linear polarization upon energence from a deep minimum was recorded, which cannot be explained by the standard mechanism for such objects (UX Ori stars): a variable contribution of radiation scattered by circumstellar dust. An analysis of possible causes of the anomalous behavior of polarization shows that it was most likely due to the presence of aligned, aspherical dust grains in the dust cloud crossing the line of sight at that time.  相似文献

We present optical spectra of four intermediate-mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062, are members of the young Orion nebula cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be ≲1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near-infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. However, they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust as revealed by the large excess emission observed at far-infrared wavelengths. The fractional infrared luminosities  ( L ir/ L )  and the dust masses computed from IRAS fluxes are systematically lower than those found for Herbig Ae/Be stars but higher than those for Vega-like stars. These stars may thus represent the youngest examples of the Vega phenomenon known so far. In contrast, the other star in our sample, HD 58647, is more likely to be a classical Be star, as is evident from the low   L ir/ L   , the scarcity of circumstellar dust, the low polarization, the presence of H α emission and near-infrared excess, and the far-infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with free–free emission similar to other well-known classical Be stars.  相似文献

The rotational velocities of young stars of the UX Ori type and related objects are analyzed. It is shown that there is a weak but statistically significant correlation between υsin i and the amplitudes of photometric variability of these stars. It reflects the fact that the brightness variability of this type of star is determined mainly by variations in the column density of circumstellar dust along the line of sight. The latter depends, in turn, on the orientation of the circumstellar disk and is greatest when the disk is oriented edgeon to the observer or at a small angle to the line of sight. An historical light curve for the UX Ori star CQ Tau is constructed for the period from 1939 through 2003. The star’s photometric behavior includes a cyclical component with a period of about 21 years. An analysis of the periodogram reveals a shorter cycle with a duration of about 1020 days after this cycle is subtracted. Since the photometric activity of UX Ori type stars is caused by variations in the circumstellar extinction, both of these cycles indicate the existence of large-scale deviations from axial symmetry in the distribution of matter in the circumstellar disk of CQ Tau. The orbiting of these inhomogeneities about the star also causes oscillatory variations in its brightness. An analysis of the color-magnitude diagrams reveals differences in the optical parameters of the circumstellar dust along the line of sight in various phases of the 21-year cycle: absorption by larger particles predominates near the brightness maximum of CQ Tau. This means that the reduced circumstellar extinction in this part of the circumstellar disk is the result of a smaller contribution from small particles; this may be evidence of the onset of a process of coagulation of the dust particles and their conversion into large-scale bodies and planetesimals.__________Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 2, pp. 165–174 (May 2005).  相似文献

We consider the problem of dust grain survival in the disk winds from T Tauri and Herbig Ae stars. For our analysis, we have chosen a disk wind model in which the gas component of the wind is heated through ambipolar diffusion to a temperature of ~104 K. We show that the heating of dust grains through their collisions with gas atoms is inefficient compared to their heating by stellar radiation and, hence, the grains survive even in the hot wind component. As a result, the disk wind can be opaque to the ultraviolet and optical stellar radiation and is capable of absorbing an appreciable fraction of it. Calculations show that the fraction of the wind-absorbed radiation for T Tauri stars can be from 20 to 40% of the total stellar luminosity at an accretion rate ? a = 10?8-10?6 M yr?1. This means that the disk winds from T Tauri stars can play the same role as the puffed-up inner rim in current accretion disk models. In Herbig Ae stars, the inner layers of the disk wind (r ≤ 0.5 AU) are dust-free, since the dust in this region sublimates under the effect of stellar radiation. Therefore, the fraction of the radiation absorbed by the disk wind in this case is considerably smaller and can be comparable to the effect from the puffed-up inner rim only at an accretion rate of the order of or higher than 10?6 M yr?1. Since the disk wind is structurally inhomogeneous, its optical depth toward the observer can be variable, which should be reflected in the photometric activity of young stars. For the same reason, moving shadows from gas and dust streams with a spiral-like shape can be observed in high-angular-resolution circumstellar disk images.  相似文献

We have detected X-ray emission (1 keV) from young intermediate-mass stars (Herbig Ae/Be stars). Since these stars are not supposed to produce intrinsic X-ray emission (no convection, no coronae), we believe that our results suggest that the X-ray emission actually traces the shock interaction of the Ae/Be star stellar winds with remnant circumstellar matter left over from the star formation process, the presence of which is also indicated by far-infrared (IRAS) and submm/mm continuum data.  相似文献

Having analyzed the light curve for the Herbig Ae star BF Ori, we justify the hypothesis of a giant protocomet, GPC I BF Ori, with a period of 6.3 years and semimajor axis a = 10 ± 3 AU. Passing through periastron, such a giant protocomet partially breaks up. During each passage through periastron, the protocomet and the fragments that follow it supply dust to circumstellar space for a certain period of time. This hypothesis can account for the entire complex of observable phenomena of cyclic Algol-like activity in Herbig Ae/Be and T Tauri stars. Conditions in a protoplanetary disk after cocoon breakup are discussed. We adduce arguments for the absence of a dust disk and for the weak effect of objects other than comets on cyclic large-scale variability.  相似文献

The very large brightness decrease of late-type Herbig Ae/Be stars is believed to be caused by obscuring dust clouds orbiting in the outer parts of their circumstellar disks. The distances of the dust clouds to the central stars have been estimated using the wavelength at maximum flux of the excess near-IR radiation, Wien's displacement law, and a formula derived by Rowan-Robinson (1980). The critical masses of these clouds were calculated employing Chandrasekhar's (1943) formula. The minimum size of the dust grains in the obscuring clouds was estimated using Aumannet al.'s (1984) formula they had applied to the star Lyr. However, it can be about ten times smaller if the dust grains are situated at the back of the cloud. The average size of these grains has been determined by assuming a size distribution similar to that in the asteroidal belt (Dohnanyi, 1969) and in the interstellar medium (Mathiset al., 1977). Their number density was determined by means of the extinction power of the dust cloud at theV pass-band. The results of our calculations show that above parameters are similar to those in our solar system. Therefore, we believe that most probably (a) the formation of planetesimals in the circumstellar disks of Herbig Ae/Be stars is on-going; and (b) the obscuring clouds will, in the long run, become planet-like objects.Paper presented at the Conference onPlanetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection held 7–10 December, 1992 at CalTech, Pasadena, California, U.S.A.  相似文献

New photometric observations of the variable star FG Sge, a rapidly evolving planetary nebula nucleus, were performed in 2003–2008. On 230 nights, we obtained 86 UBV and 155 BV RI (or R c , I c ) magnitude estimates. The maximum amplitude of the V-band light variations was >8 m . Six deep minima and four high maxima were observed. Analysis of the light curve has shown that the pulsation period of the star remained constant since 1991 and was P = 115 days. We have studied the wavelength dependence of the extinction at various phases of the light curve. The blueing of the B-V color at deep minima is interpreted as the result of light scattering in the circumstellar dust shell of the star formed by preceding dust ejections since 1992. Our spectroscopic observations performed on nine nights in 2003–2007 with the 125-cm telescope at the Crimean Station of the Sternberg Institute have confirmed the previously detected intensity variations of the Swan bands and the sodium doublet with brightness. It is noted that the Swan bands originate in the upper atmosphere, the star’s extended envelope, while the sodium doublet originates mainly in the circumstellar shell of FG Sge. We suggest that the star is currently located in the temperature-luminosity diagram at the turning point of the horizontal track of cooling in the direction of hot stars—evolution caused by the last helium shell flash at the planetary nebula stage.  相似文献

A number of variable stars of the Orion population has been identified with IRAS point sources by us. This finding supports the conclusion that the prominent Algol-like minima in the lightcurves of these stars originate from obscurations by dust clouds in a circumstellar shell. The discussion of the existingUBVR data leads to the remarkable conclusion that the extinction properties of the grain populations contained in individual dust clouds moving in one and the same circumstellar shell are quite different.From the multicolour photometric data of the different Algol-like minima we derived individual values of the reddening parameterR = A v /E(B - V). It covers a remarkable wide range of values from that one typical of the interstellar extinction law up to 7. In the case of SV Cep one of the grain populations produces a virtually neutral extinction. The large values ofR speak in favour of larger than normal (interstellar) dust grains, which may have grown by coagulation processes. The cloudy circumstellar dust shell provides a natural explanation for the observed infrared excess. The properties derived from the optical light variations are fully compatible with the properties deduced from the infrared radiation. The photometric activity of the star BF Ori, which belongs to the family of UX Ori-type stars, is studied. New data obtained with the ASAS robotic telescope confirm the existence of a cyclical component in the light curve for this star with a duration of roughly 11-12 years. The form of the photometric cycle resembles the theoretical light curves for a young binary system with a low-mass secondary component, and which is accreting matter from a surrounding common disk. Alternative mechanisms for the cyclical variability of UX Ori stars are also discussed.  相似文献

We report on the long-term variability of the Be/X-ray binary LS I +61° 235/RX J0146.9+6121. New optical spectroscopic and infrared photometric observations confirm the presence of global one-armed oscillations in the circumstellar disc of the Be star, and allow us to derive a V R band quasi-period of 1240±30 d. Pronounced shell events, reminiscent of the spectacular variations in Be stars, are also seen. We have found that the J , H and K infrared photometric bands vary in correlation with the spectroscopic V R variations, implying that the one-armed disc oscillations are prograde. The effect of the oscillations is not only seen in the H α line but is also seen in the He  i λ 6678 and Paschen lines. As these lines are formed at different radii in the equatorial disc of the Be star, such effects confirm the global nature of the perturbation. The Keplerian disc has been found to be denser than the average for a sample of isolated Be stars, which may be indicative of some kind of interaction with the compact companion. Finally, from a Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation we derive a spin period of the neutron star of 1404.5±0.5 s.  相似文献
