Existence and characteristics of ion-acoustic (IA) wave modulation are studied in a plasma with two-temperature electron satisfying kappa distribution. Based on the multiple time scales perturbation, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) is derived. Similar to the case of double Maxwellian electrons, both polarities of envelope soliton can exist over restricted ranges of the fractional hot electron density ratio and two-temperature superthermal electrons. The transition from stable dark solitons to unstable bright ones shifts to the smaller wavelength regions in the presence of cool and hot superthermal electrons. It is shown that the small values of the hot electron populations leads to shrinking the modulation instability region. It is also found the instability growth rate reduces due to the presence of hot electrons. The result of present investigation contributes to the physics of wave modulation in Saturn’s magnetosphere where two-temperature electrons with kappa distribution exist.  相似文献

A rigorous theoretical investigation has been made on multi-dimensional instability of obliquely propagating electrostatic dust-ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary structures in a magnetized dusty electronegative plasma which consists of Boltzmann electrons, nonthermal negative ions, cold mobile positive ions, and arbitrarily charged stationary dust. The Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation is derived by the reductive perturbation method, and its solitary wave solution is analyzed for the study of the DIA solitary structures, which are found to exist in such a dusty plasma. The multi-dimensional instability of these solitary structures is also studied by the small-k (long wave-length plane wave) perturbation expansion technique. The combined effects of the external magnetic field, obliqueness, and nonthermal distribution of negative ions, which are found to significantly modify the basic properties of small but finite-amplitude DIA solitary waves, are examined. The external magnetic field and the propagation directions of both the nonlinear waves and their perturbation modes are found to play a very important role in changing the instability criterion and the growth rate of the unstable DIA solitary waves. The basic features (viz. speed, amplitude, width, instability, etc.) and the underlying physics of the DIA solitary waves, which are relevant to many astrophysical situations (especially, auroral plasma, Saturn’s E-ring and F-ring, Halley’s comet, etc.) and laboratory dusty plasma situations, are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Existence of compressive relativistic solitons is established in an arbitrary ξ-direction, inclining at an angle to the direction of the weak magnetic field (ω pi ω Bi ) in this plasma compound with ions, relativistic electrons and relativistic electron beams. It is observed that the absolute linear growth of amplitudes of compressive solitons is due to inactive role of the weak magnetic field and the initial streaming speeds of relativistic electrons, electron beams, and Q b (ion mass to electron beam mass). Besides, the small initial streaming of electrons is found to be responsible to generate relatively high amplitude compressive solitons. The non-relativistic ions in the background plasma, but in absence of electron-beam drift and in presence of weak magnetic field are the causing effect of interest for the smooth growth of soliton amplitudes in this model of plasma.  相似文献

Whistler mode wave emissions in the magnetosheath, known as lion roars, are thought to be generated by an electron cyclotron instability. Using reported satellite data we model a magnetosheath medium where lion roars emissions occurred and we study the character, absolute or convective, of the associated electron cyclotron instability. We use a linear hot plasma dispersion equation for parallel and oblique propagation to the static magnetic field and apply Derfler's frequency cusp criterion to discriminate between absolute and convective instability. Our results show that an absolute instability is compatible with experimental data. From the linear temporal growth rate we extrapolate the saturated wave magnetic field and find a good agreement with the measurements.  相似文献

The linear self-gravitational instability of finitely conducting, magnetized viscoelastic fluid is investigated using the modified generalized hydrodynamic (GH) model. A general dispersion relation is obtained with the help of linearized perturbation equations using the normal mode analysis and it is discussed for longitudinal and transverse modes of propagation. In longitudinal propagation, we find that Alfven mode is uncoupled with the gravitating mode. The Jeans criterion of instability is determined which depends upon shear viscosity and bulk viscosity while it is independent of magnetic field. The viscoelastic effects modify the fundamental Jeans criterion of gravitational instability. In transverse mode of propagation, the Alfven mode couples with the acoustic mode, compressional viscoelastic mode and gravitating mode. The growth rate of Jeans instability is compared in weakly coupled plasma (WCP) and strongly coupled plasma (SCP) which is larger for SCP in both the modes of propagations. The presence of finite electrical resistivity removes the effect of magnetic field in the condition of Jeans instability and expression of critical Jeans wavenumber. It is found that Mach number and shear viscosity has stabilizing while finite electrical resistivity has destabilizing influence on the growth rate of Jeans instability.  相似文献

The effect of nonthermal electrons on ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) driven modes is investigated in the presence of variable dust charge and ion shear flow. The dust charge fluctuating expression is obtained in the presence of kappa distributed electrons. A dispersion relation is derived and analyzed numerically by choosing space plasma parameters of Jupiter/Saturn magnetospheres. It is found that the presence of nonthermal electrons population reduces the growth rate of ITG mode driven instability. The effects of ion temperature, electron density and magnetic field variation on the growth rate of ITG instability are presented numerically. It is also pointed out that the present results will be useful to understand the ITG driven modes with variable dust charge and kappa distributed electrons, present in most of the space plasma environments.  相似文献

The instability of dust ion acoustic waves (DIAWs) driven by ions and electrons with different drift velocities in an unmagnetized, collisionless, isotropic dusty plasma was investigated. The electrons, ions and dust particles are assumed to be the generalized q-nonextensive distributions. The spectral indices of the q-distributions for the three plasma components are different from each other. Based on kinetic theory, the dispersion relation and the instability growth rate of DIAWs are obtained. It is found that the presence of the nonextensive distribution electrons and ions significantly modify the domain of the instability growth rate, as well as the ion-electron density ratio (ρ) and drifting-thermal velocity ratio (u i0/v Te ). In reverse, the index of dust grains has nearly no any effect on the instability growth rate. Furthermore, the effects of these parameters on the growth rate have also been discussed in detail.  相似文献

We have shown that a current-carrying plasma loop can be heated by magnetic pinch driven by the pressure imbalance between inside and outside the loop, using a 3-dimensional electromagnetic (EM) particle code. Both electrons and ions in the loop can be heated in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, therefore the perpendicular temperature can be increased about 10 times compared with the parallel temperature. This temperature anisotropy produced by the magnetic pinch heating can induce a plasma instability, by which high-frequency electromagnetic waves can be excited. The plasma current which is enhanced by the magnetic pinch can also excite a kinetic kink instability, which can heat ions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The heating mechanism of ions as well as the electromagnetic emission could be important for an understanding of the coronal loop heating and the electromagnetic wave emissions from active coronal regions.  相似文献

Mars Global Surveyor detected cold electrons above the Martian ionopause, which can be interpreted as detached ionospheric plasma clouds. Similar observations by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter electron temperature probe showed also extreme spatial irregularities of electrons in the form of plasma clouds on Venus, which were explained by the occurrence of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Therefore, we suggest that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability may also detach ionospheric plasma clouds on Mars. We investigate the instability growth rate at the Martian ionopause resulting from the flow of the solar wind for the case where the interplanetary magnetic field is oriented normal to the flow direction. Since the velocity shear near the subsolar point is very small, this area is stable with respect to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We found that the highest flow velocities are reached at the equatorial flanks near the terminator plane, while the maximum plasma density in the terminator plane appears at the polar areas. By comparing the instability growth rate with the magnetic barrier formation time, we found that the instability can evolve into a non-linear stage at the whole terminator plane but preferably at the equatorial flanks. Escape rates of O+ ions due to detached plasma clouds in the order of about 2×1023-3×1024 s-1 are found. Thus, atmospheric loss caused by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability should be comparable with other non-thermal loss processes. Further, we discuss our results in view of the expected observations of heavy ion loss rates by ASPERA-3 on board of Mars Express.  相似文献

The instability of a linearly-polarised electromagnetic ordinary mode in counterrotating plasmas and propagating perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field caused by a counterstreaming of electrons along the latter is studied using a cold-plasma model. It is found that: (i) In the presence of either a streaming or a rotation or both, the ordinary-wave propagation is possible even for frequencies less than the plasma frequency; (ii) the Coriolis forces like the applied magnetic field stabilise the ordinary modes.  相似文献

The effects of arbitrary radiative heat-loss functions and Hall current on the self-gravitational instability of a homogeneous, viscous, rotating plasma has been investigated incorporating the effects of finite electrical resistivity, finite electron inertia and thermal conductivity. A general dispersion relation is obtained using the normal mode analysis with the help of relevant linearized perturbation equations of the problem, and a modified Jeans criterion of instability is obtained. The conditions of modified Jeans instabilities and stabilities are discussed in the different cases of our interest. We find that the presence of arbitrary radiative heat-loss functions and thermal conductivity modifies the fundamental Jeans criterion of gravitational instability into a radiative instability criterion. The Hall parameter affects only the longitudinal mode of propagation and it has no effect on the transverse mode of propagation. For longitudinal propagation, it is found that the condition of radiative instability is independent of the magnetic field, Hall parameter, finite electron inertia, finite electrical resistivity, viscosity and rotation; but for the transverse mode of propagation it depends on the finite electrical resistivity, the strength of the magnetic field, and it is independent of rotation, electron inertia and viscosity. From the curves we find that the presence of thermal conductivity, finite electrical resistivity and density-dependent heat-loss function has a destabilizing influence, while viscosity and magnetic field have a stabilizing effect on the growth rate of an instability. The effect of arbitrary heat-loss functions is also studied on the growth rate of a radiative instability.  相似文献

We have applied numerical simulations and modeling to the particle acceleration, magnetic field generation, and emission from relativistic shocks. We investigate the nonlinear stage of theWeibel instability and compare our simulations with the observed gamma-ray burst emission. In collisionless shocks, plasma waves and their associated instabilities (e.g., the Weibel, Buneman and other two-stream instabilities) are responsible for particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration and magnetic field generation. 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) simulations with three different electron-positron jet velocity distributions and also with an electron-ion plasma have been performed and show shock processes including spatial and temporal evolution of shocks in unmagnetized ambient plasmas. The growth time and nonlinear saturation levels depend on the initial jet parallel velocity distributions. Simulations show that the Weibel instability created in the collisionless shocks accelerates jet and ambient particles both perpendicular and parallel to the jet propagation direction. The nonlinear fluctuation amplitude of densities, currents, electric, and magnetic fields in the electron-positron shocks are larger for smaller jet Lorentz factor. This comes from the fact that the growth time of the Weibel instability is proportional to the square of the jet Lorentz factor. We have performed simulations with broad Lorentz factor distribution of jet electrons and positrons, which is assumed to be created by photon annihilation. Simulation results with this broad distribution show that the Weibel instability is excited continuously by the wide-range of jet Lorentz factor from lower to higher values. In all simulations the Weibel instability is responsible for generating and amplifying magnetic fields perpendicular to the jet propagation direction, and contributes to the electron’s (positron’s) transverse deflection behind the jet head. This small scale magnetic field structure contributes to the generation of “jitter” radiation from deflected electrons (positrons), which is different from synchrotron radiation in uniform magnetic fields. The jitter radiation resulting from small scale magnetic field structures may be important for understanding the complex time structure and spectral evolution observed in gamma-ray bursts or other astrophysical sources containing relativistic jets and relativistic collisionless shocks. The detailed studies of shock microscopic process evolution may provide some insights into early and later GRB afterglows.  相似文献

A one-dimensional electrostatic particle simulation of plasma streaming perpendicular to a magnetic field with nonperiodic boundary condition has been carried out. When a bulk of plasma in injected across an ambient magnetic field, a stream of neutral plasma, consisting of equal numbers of ions and electrons, polarizes, and the resulting polarization electric field gives rise to the penetration of plasma across the magnetic field so that the integrity of plasma maintains. Computer simulation demonstrates the properties of cross-field propagation of plasma stream in a magnetic field with different plasma parameters.  相似文献

The problem of two-stream instability in plasmas where electrons move through ions with arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field is discussed. Electrostatic and electromagnetic instabilities have both been discussed. It is found that the strength and orientation of the magnetic field both affect the electrostatic waves propagating along the streaming direction to a considerable extent. The electromagnetic instability with a cross-field orientation is associated with a larger range of unstable wavenumber and larger growth rates compared to any other coexisting electrostatic instability.  相似文献

Nonlinear dynamics of electron acoustic waves (EAWs) in a plasma consisting of stationary ions, cool inertial electrons and hot electrons having a nonextensive distribution is studied. Under transverse perturbations, the nonlinear wave can be described by the general form of the Davey-Stewartson (DS) equations. The reductive perturbation technique is employed to derive Davey-Stewartson equations. From the solutions of these equations, amplitude modulation properties and stability regions of EAWs are studied in two-dimensional plasma. Further, the influence of nonextensivity of hot electrons (via q) on the characteristics of EAWs has been analysed.  相似文献

Requirements for the number of nonthermal electrons which must be accelerated in the impulsive phase of a flare are reviewed. These are uncertain by two orders of magnitude depending on whether hard X-rays above 25 keV are produced primarily by hot thermal electrons which contain a small fraction of the flare energy or by nonthermal streaming electrons which contain > 50% of the flare energy. Possible acceleration mechanisms are considered to see to what extent either X-ray production scenario can be considered viable. Direct electric field acceleration is shown to involve significant heating. In addition, candidate primary energy release mechanisms to convert stored magnetic energy into flare energy, steady reconnection and the tearing mode instability, transfer at least half of the stored energy into heat and most of the remaining energy to ions. Acceleration by electron plasma waves requires that the waves be driven to large amplitude by electrons with large streaming velocities or by anisotropic ion-acoustic waves which also require streaming electrons for their production. These in turn can only come from direct electric field acceleration since it is shown that ion-acoustic waves excited by the primary current cannot amplify electron plasma waves. Thus, wave acceleration is subject to the same limitations as direct electric field acceleration. It is concluded that at most 0.1% of the flare energy can be deposited into nonthermal streaming electrons with the energy conversion mechanisms as they have been proposed and known acceleration mechanisms. Thus, hard X-ray production above 10 keV primarily by hot thermal electrons is the only choice compatible with models for the primary energy release as they presently exist.  相似文献

Encounter of Voyager with Saturn’s environment revealed the presence of electromagnetic ion-cyclotron waves (EMIC) in Saturnian magnetosphere. Cassini provided the evidence of dynamic particle injections in inner magnetosphere of Saturn. Also inner magnetosphere of Saturn has highest rotational flow shear as compared to any other planet in our solar system. Hence during these injections, electrons and ions are transported to regions of stronger magnetic field, thus gaining energy. The dynamics of the inner magnetosphere of Saturn are governed by wave-particle interaction. In present paper we have investigated those EMIC waves pertaining in background plasma which propagates obliquely with respect to the magnetic field of Saturn. Applying kinetic approach, the expression for dispersion relation and growth rate has been derived. Magnetic field model has been used to incorporate magnetic field strength at different latitudes for radial distance of \(6.18~R_{{s}}\) (\(1~R_{{s}}= 60{,}268~\mbox{km}\)). Various parameters affecting the growth of EMIC waves in cold bi-Maxwellian background and after the hot injections has been studied. Parametric analysis inferred that after hot injections, growth rate of EMIC waves increases till \(10^{\circ}\) and decreases eventually with increase in latitude due to ion density distribution in near-equatorial region. Also, growth rate of EMIC waves increases with increasing value of temperature anisotropy and AC frequency, but the growth rate decreases as the angle of propagation with respect to \(B_{0}\) (Magnetic field at equator) increases. The injection events which assume the Loss-cone distribution of particles, affect the lower wave numbers of the spectra.  相似文献

The role of electrostatic instabilities in the critical ionization velocity mechanism is investigated. The analysis is based on the theory developed by Sherman, which interprets Alfvén's critical velocity in terms of a circular process. This process involves the acceleration of electrons by a two-stream instability modified by the presence of a magnetic field. A general expression for the energy and momentum of ions and electrons associated with an electrostatic mode is derived in terms of the plasma dielectric constant. This is used in the case of the modified two-stream instability to determine the distribution of energy between ions and electrons. An extrapolation from the linear phase then gives an estimate of the energy delivered to the electrons which is compared to that required to ionize the neutral gas.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May, 1978.  相似文献

We have studied the stability of the electrostatic electron cyclotron wave in a plasma composed of hydrogen, oxygen and electrons. To conform to satellite observations in the low latitude boundary layer we model both the ionic components as drifting perpendicular to the magnetic field. Expressions for the frequency and the growth rate of the wave have been derived. We find that the plasma can support electron cyclotron waves with a frequency slightly greater than the electron cyclotron frequency ω ce ; these waves can be driven unstable when the drift velocities of both the ions are greater than the phase velocity of the wave. We thus introduce another source of instability for these waves namely multiple ion beams drifting perpendicular to the magnetic field.  相似文献

Ion acoustic solitary waves and periodic waves in an unmagnetized plasma with superthermal (kappa distributed) cool and hot electrons have been investigated using non-perturbative approach. We have transformed basic model equations to an ordinary differential equation involving electrostatic potential. Then we have applied the bifurcation theory of planar dynamical systems to the obtained equation and we have proved the existence of solitary wave solutions and periodic wave solutions. We have derived two exact solutions of solitary and periodic waves depending on the parameters. From the solitary wave solution and periodic wave solution, we have shown the effects of density ratio p of cool electrons and ions, spectral index κ, and temperature ratio σ of cool electrons and hot electrons on characteristics of ion acoustic solitary and periodic waves.  相似文献
