Abstract: Two adjacent volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, the Main Malusok and the Malusok Southeast, are delineated within Barangay Tabayo, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines. These deposits comprise massive to semi-massive sulfide lenses representing the down-dip equivalent of oxidized gossans. The massive sulfides have a primary mineral assemblage of pyrite-chalcopyrite-sphalerite with significant amounts of supergene copper in the form of chal-cocite. Owing to structural and metamorphic overprinting combined with intense alteration, primary textures are generally obliterated. Rock types are classified according to dominant mineral assemblages whereas the main lithologic units comprising the Malusok volcanic package are divided based on the position of each unit relative to the mineralized zone. The main lithologic units are designated as the hanging wall, the host, and the footwall sequences. In correlating the stratigraphy of the Main Malusok zone with that of the Malusok Southeast zone, a chlorite/epidote-rich interval located at the base of the hanging wall sequence serves as a distinct stratigraphic marker from which all lithologies are referred to. Comparisons between the stratigraphy of the two areas show that massive to semi-massive sulfide lenses are confined within a single stratigraphic interval representing the favorable horizon for the entire Malusok area. However, differences exist relative to style of mineralization and configuration of the altered interval between the Main Malusok and the Malusok Southeast VMS deposits. Based on characteristics exhibited by each individual deposit, it is inferred that the Main Malusok VMS deposit overlies a feeder zone whereas the Malusok Southeast sulfide lenses represent satellite deposits and transported blocks.

The Sargaz Cu–Zn massive sulfide deposit is situated in the southeastern part of Kerman Province, in the southern Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone of Iran. The stratigraphic footwall of the Sargaz deposit is Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic (?) pillowed basalt, whereas the stratigraphic hanging wall is andesite. Mafic volcanic rocks are overlain by andesitic volcaniclastics and volcanic breccias and locally by heterogeneous debris flows. Rhyodacitic flows and volcaniclastics overlie the sequence of basaltic and andesitic rocks. Based on the bimodal nature of volcanism, the regional geologic setting and petrochemistry of the volcanic rocks, we suggest massive sulfide mineralization in the Sargaz formed in a nascent ensialic back-arc basin. The current reserves (after ancient mining) of the Sargaz deposit are 3 Mt at 1.34% Cu, 0.38% Zn, 0.08%Pb, 0.24 g/t Au, and 7 g/t Ag. The structurally dismembered massive sulfide lens is zoned from a pyrite-rich base, to a pyrite?±?chalcopyrite-rich central part, and a sphalerite–chalcopyrite-rich upper part, with a sphalerite-rich zone lateral to the upper part. The main sulfide mineral is pyrite, with lesser chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The feeder zone, comprised of a vein stockwork consists of quartz–sulfide–sericite pesudobreccia and, in the deepest part, chlorite–quartz–pyrite pesudobreccia. Footwall hydrothermal alteration extends at least 70–80 m below the massive sulfide lens and more than a hundred meters along strike from the massive sulfide lens. Jasper and Fe–Mn bearing chert horizons lateral to the sulfide deposit represent low-temperature hydrothermal precipitates of the evolving hydrothermal system. Based on mineral textures and paragenetic relationships, the growth history of the Sargaz deposit is complex and includes: (1) early precipitation of sulfides (protore) on the seafloor as precipitation of fine-grained anhedral pyrite, sphalerite, quartz, and barite; (2) anhydrite precipitation in open spaces and mineral interstices within the sulfide mound followed by its subsequent dissolution, formation of breccia textures, and mound clasts and precipitation of coarse-grained pyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite–tennantite, galena and barite; (3) replacement of pre-existing sulfides by chalcopyrite precipitated at higher temperatures (zone refining); (4) continued “refining” led to the dissolution of stage 3 chalcopyrite and formation of a base-metal-depleted pyrite body in the lowermost part of the massive sulfide lens; (5) carbonate veins were emplaced into the sulfide lens, replacing stage 2 barite. The δ34S composition of the sulfides ranges from +2.8‰ to +8.5‰ (average, +5.6‰) with a general increase of δ34S ratios with depth within the massive sulfide lens and underlying stockwork zone. The heavier values indicate that some of the sulfur was derived from seawater sulfate that was ultimately thermochemically reduced in deep hydrothermal reaction zones.

The Boliden deposit (8.3 Mt at 15.9 g/t Au) is interpreted to have been formed between ca. 1894 and 1891 Ma, based on two new U–Pb ID-TIMS ages: a maximum age of 1893.9?+?2.0/?1.9 Ma obtained from an altered quartz and feldspar porphyritic rhyolite in the deposit footwall in the volcanic Skellefte group and a minimum age of 1890.8?±?1 Ma obtained from a felsic mass-flow deposit in the lowermost part of the volcano-sedimentary Vargfors group, which forms the stratigraphic hanging wall to the deposit. These ages are in agreement with the alteration and mineralization being formed at or near the sea floor in the volcanogenic massive sulfide environment. These two ages and the geologic relationships imply that: (1) volcanism and hydrothermal activity in the Skellefte group were initiated earlier than 1.89 Ga which was previously considered to be the onset of volcanism in the Skellefte group; (2) the volcano-sedimentary succession of the Vargfors group is perhaps as old as 1892 Ma in the eastern part of the Skellefte district; and (3) an early (synvolcanic) deformation event in the Skellefte group is evidenced by the unconformity between the ≤1893.9?+?2.0/?1.9 Ma Skellefte group upper volcanic rocks and the ≤1890.8?±?1 Ma Vargfors sedimentary and volcanic rocks in the Boliden domain. Differential block tilting, uplift, and subsidence controlled by synvolcanic faults in an extensional environment is likely, perhaps explaining some hybrid VMS-epithermal characteristics shown by the VMS deposits of the district.

The Ferguson Lake Ni–Cu–Co–platinum-group element (PGE) deposit in Nunavut, Canada, occurs near the structural hanging wall of a metamorphosed gabbroic sill that is concordant with the enclosing country rock gneisses and amphibolites. Massive to semi-massive sulfide occurs toward the structural hanging wall of the metagabbro, and a low-sulfide, high-PGE style of mineralization (sulfide veins and disseminations) locally occurs ~30–50 m below the main massive sulfide. Water–rock interaction in the Ferguson Lake Ni–Cu–Co–PGE deposit is manifested mostly as widespread, post-metamorphic, epidote–chlorite–calcite veins, and replacement assemblages that contain variable amounts of sulfides and platinum-group minerals (PGM). PGM occur as inclusions in magmatic pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in both the massive sulfide and high-PGE zones, at the contact between sulfides and hornblende or magnetite inclusions in the massive sulfide, in undeformed sulfide veins and adjacent chlorite and/or epidote halos, in hornblende adjacent to hydrothermal veins, and in plagioclase–chlorite aggregates replacing garnet cemented by sulfide. The PGM are mostly represented by the kotulskite (PdTe)–sobolevskite (PdBi) solid solution but also include michenerite (PdBiTe), froodite (PdBi2), merenskyite (PdTe2), mertieite II (Pd8[Sb,As]3), and sperrylite (PtAs2) and occur in variety of textural settings. Those that occur in massive and interstitial sulfides, interpreted to be of magmatic origin and formed through exsolution from base metal sulfides at temperatures <600°C, are dominantly Bi rich (i.e., Te-bearing sobolevskite), whereas those that occur in late-stage hydrothermal sulfide/silicate veins and their epidote–chlorite alteration halos tend to be more Te rich (i.e., Bi-bearing kotulskite). The chemistry and textural setting of the various PGM supports a genetic model that links the magmatic and hydrothermal end-members of the sulfide–PGM mineralization. The association of PGM with magmatic sulfides in the massive sulfide and high-PGE zones has been interpreted to indicate that PGE mineralization was initially formed through exsolution from base metal sulfides which formed by magmatic sulfide liquid segregation and crystallization. However, the occurrence of PGM in undeformed sulfide-bearing veins and in their chlorite–epidote halos and differences in PGM chemistry indicate that hydrothermal fluids were responsible for post-metamorphic redistribution and dispersion of PGE.

Abstract: Tizapa volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit is hosted in greenschist facies metamorphic rocks; footwall is green schist of felsic to mafic metavolcanic rocks and hanging wall is graphite schist of metasedmentary pelitic rock. Pb-Pb dating of ore samples indicates 103. 4Ma to 156. 3Ma for the age of mineralization (JICA/MMAJ, 1991).

A multi-element geochemical study of the wall rocks of intermediate to felsic volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits was carried out to identify pathfinder elements which significantly enlarge the size of exploration targets. Drill core samples from the Crandon massive sulfide deposit in Wisconsin, and outcrop samples from the United Verde and Iron King deposits in Arizona, and from the Captains Flat, Mt. Costigan, and Wiseman Creek deposits in New South Wales, Australia were analyzed. Because anomalously high fluorine values have been described in several volcanic-hosted ore systems, fluorine was included in the study. All of the above deposits have patterns of fluorine enrichment around ore. Drill core samples from two noneconomic prospects within ten miles of the Crandon deposit contain background to only weakly anomalous fluorine values. At the large Crandon deposit (> 50 million tons of zinc, copper ore), fluorine enrichment extends approximately 320 m into the footwall rocks and at least 220 m into the hanging wall rocks. At the large United Verde deposit (> 50 million tons of copper, zinc ore), fluorine enrichment is recognizable in the footwall rocks at least 650 m from the ore. At the smaller Iron King deposit (five million tons production of zinc, lead, copper ore), fluorine enrichment extends for a distance of approximately 60 m into the footwall rocks. At the small deposits in New South Wales (< five million tons production of zinc, lead, copper ore), fluorine enrichment is easily recognizable, but with the samples collected, the limits of the anomalous patterns cannot be defined.Fluorine occurs in some hydrothermal systems unassociated with mineralization and is therefore not a specific signature of ore-forming processes. From the work completed, many massive sulfide deposits in volcanic rocks occur in hydrothermal systems which contain fluorine. On the basis of the data presented, if anomalously high fluorine values do exist in an exploration search area, the chances of finding a massive sulfide ore deposit are improved.Genetic models for volcanic-hosted massive sulfide ore deposits have concentrated on rock textures, alteration mineralogy, and geochemistry of the ore metals. From the data presented, fluorine should be considered as a component of massive sulfide systems in intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks, and should be considered as a possible complexing agent for the ore metals.

A multi-element geochemical study of the wallrocks which host the large Precambrian Crandon deposit (≈ 70 million tons of zinc, copper ore) in Wisconsin, U.S.A. was carried out to identify pathfinder elements which significantly enlarge the size of the deposit as an exploration target. The Crandon deposit occurs in what appears to be a “normal”, subalkaline, intermediate to felsic volcanic sequence. The silica concentration of the wallrocks shows neither a systematic relationship to volcanic stratigraphy nor a distinctive pattern around ore.To determine if silica has been added to the host rocks, a regression analysis was performed on published data from 496 unaltered, subalkaline volcanic rocks from the Abitibi Subprovince of Canada, with silica as the dependent variable and the ratio of “immobile” elements Zr/TiO2 as the independent variable. Based on the second degree regression curve and the associated standard error of estimate, predicted and residual silica values were calculated and plotted for the Crandon host rocks. The results show that massive sulfide ore was deposited in andesitic rocks with an original SiO2 content of 52–62%, and that more than 7.4% SiO2 was added to the rocks stratigraphically beneath the deposit and on strike with the deposit. Silica was added to the hanging wall rocks also, which confirms that hydrothermal activity at Crandon continued after cessation of massive sulfide ore deposition. In contrast to the pattern of silica enrichment at Crandon which significantly enlarges the size of the exploration target, two noneconomic prospects within ten miles of Crandon contain low to moderate levels of silica enrichment and corresponding low base metal values.Silica enrichment occurs in some systems unassociated with mineralization and is therefore not a specific signature of ore-forming processes. However, from the data presented on the Crandon deposit, if silica enrichment does exist in an exploration search area, the chances of finding a massive sulfide ore deposit are improved.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of hot HNO3 insoluble residues of rock powders is used as a new exploration technique for the volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposit in the Rosebery mine area. The EPR signal intensities measured in 326.5±5 mT sweeps are strong in the altered rocks, and show a negative correlation with Ca, Na and Sr, and a positive correlation with K/Na, Rb/Sr and (K × Rb)/(Ca × Na × Sr). The EPR intensities measured in 326.5±100 mT sweeps show high values in the footwall pyroclastics, host rocks and hanging wall pyroclastics near and around the Rosebery deposit, and correlate positively with K, Fe, Mn, Ba, F, Rb, Zn, Pb and Zr. The Rosebery deposit and associated footwall alteration zone are located at the intersection of two elongated paramagnetic halos. The first is characterized by strong intensities of [AlO4]° signals measured at magnetic flux density sweeps over 326.5±5 mT, trends NE–SW, and passes discordantly from the west to the east the White Spur Formation, altered footwall (footwall alteration zone), host rock of the Rosebery deposit, hanging wall and Mount Black Volcanics. The second, largely stratabound, halo is defined by strong intensities of Mn2+ sextets observed at magnetic flux density sweeps over 326.5±100 mT, runs N–S following the stratigraphic trend, and outlines the mineralized host rock and footwall alteration zone. It also extends toward the south into the unaltered footwall and hanging wall rocks. The first type of halo is considered to be related to wall rock alteration due to the VHMS mineralization processes as well to later Devonian metamorphism, and the second is thought to be related to massive sulphide mineralization alone.

Statistical analysis of the vein thickness distributions of veins in the Cambrian Hellyer volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit, Australia, indicates that the vein thickness data conform to power-law distributions characterised by fractal dimensions D. The most intensely mineralised vein type is characterised by a low fractal dimension, whereas weakly mineralised or barren vein types have elevated D-values. The observed differences in the fractal dimensions suggest that the study of vein thickness distributions may provide a tool in exploration. It is also shown that the field observations can be explained by a model linking the fractal dimensions of the vein thickness distributions with the mechanisms responsible for the formation and evolution of the vein systems.

Abstract: The Ashele Cu-Zn deposit is a recently discovered volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit in Xinjiang, Northwestern China. It is the largest Cu-Zn deposit in this type of deposits in China, which were formed in the early period of later Palaeozoic Era. This deposit is hosted within a suit of bimodal submarine volcanic rocks of the Ashele Formation of Lower-Middle Devonian System formed in an environment of paleocontinental margin rift setting. Lensoid orebodies occur between spilitic rocks developed at footwall and quartz-keratophyric tuff at hanging wall. Zonation of metal elements in the Ashele mine is one of typical volcanic-related exhalative Cu-Zn sulfide deposits in the world. Black ores enriched in Pb, Zn and Ag occurs on the top of the No. 1 orebody in the Ashele deposit, yellow ores enriched in Cu in the middle part, and the chalcopyritization stringer below the massive sulfide ores. Zonation of ore-structure in the No. 1 orebody is also apparent and corresponds to the zoning of elements, i. e. lamellar and/or banded sulfide-sulfate ores on the top, massive sulfide ores in the middle, and stockwork veinlets associated with altered breccia pipe on the bottom. Four epochs of mineralization in the Ashele deposit has been recognized. The first period of syngenetic-exhalative deposition of sulfides is the main epoch of mineralization, and the ores deposited subsequently subjected to thermo-metamorphism at the second epoch, superimposed by hydrothermal mineralization at the third epoch, and weathered or oxidized at the fourth epoch.
More than 100 categories of minerals have been recognized in the Ashele mine, but only pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, galena, barite, quartz, chlorite, sericite, and calcite are dominant, making up various types of ores, and alteration pipes or horizons. Studies of ore petrology suggest that the massive ores were volcanogenic and deposited by exhalative process.

The latest or n ewest version of the char acteristic an alysis (NCHARAN)computer program offers the exploration geologist a wide variety of options for integrating regionalized multivariate data. The options include the selection of regional cells for characterizing deposit models, the selection of variables that constitute the models, and the choice of logical combinations of variables that best represent these models. Moreover, the program provides for the display of results which, in turn, makes possible review, reselection, and refinement of a model. Most important, the performance of the above-mentioned steps in an interactive computing mode can result in a timely and meaningful interpretation of the data available to the exploration geologist. The most recent application of characteristic analysis has resulted in the possible discovery of economic sulfide mineralization in the Grong area in central Norway. Exploration data for 27 geophysical, geological, and geochemical variables were used to construct a mineralized and a lithogeochemical model for an area that contained a known massive sulfide deposit. The models were applied to exploration data collected from the Gjersvik area in the Grong mining district and resulted in the identification of two localities of possible mineralization. Detailed field examination revealed the presence of a sulfide vein system and a partially inverted stratigraphic sequence indicating the possible presence of a massive sulfide deposit at depth.

测试结果表明,不同产状黄铁矿的平均分子式相似,分别为FeS_(1.98)、FeS_(1.99)和FeS_(1.98),似层状和脉状硫化物中磁黄铁矿的平均化学式为Fe_(0.886)S和Fe_(0.874)S,属形成温度相对较低单斜磁黄铁矿。

The Heath Steele massive sulphide deposit in northern New Brunswick lies conformably within a sedimentary-volcanic sequence of probable Ordovician age which has been metamorphosed to the greenschist stage. The dominant sulphide mineral is pyrite, and the main economic minerals are sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite; the general grade of the ore is 5% Zn, 2% Pb, and 1% Cu.The distribution of Pb and Zn in acid volcanic rocks stratigraphically above the massive sulphides is compared with the distribution in similar rocks stratigraphically below the sulphides. Whereas there are discernable differences in the populations, there is also considerable overlap between them. To enable individual samples to be classified, linear discriminant functions were calculated for the two groups; Pb and Zn were found to be the most useful variables to separate the two populations. The functions were then tested on hanging wall and footwall samples not used in computing the functions. A halo region, extending about 1,200 ft above the sulphides and 4,000 ft along the same stratigraphic horizon as the sulphides was outlined by samples classified as “hanging wall”. Beyond the halo zone there is no significant difference in the distribution of Pb and Zn between the hanging wall and footwall acid volcanic rocks. The results demonstrate that rocks at Heath Steele, which show no evidence of mineralogical alteration attributable to mineralization, have a trace element halo of considerable extent spatially associated with the sulphides. If similar halos can be shown to be a general feature of massive sulphide deposits, the technique described should have wide application for exploration for deeply buried deposits of this type.

The Keban Pb-Zn deposit is an old and important mine in Turkey, and intensive geological, geophysical exploration and diamond drilling have been carried out in the area in an attempt to find new ore reserves. Graphitic schist in the hanging wall of the ore zone, which has sealed the deposit, has produced many false geophysical anomalies. Thus, it is apparently difficult to distinguish the geophysical anomalies related to ore deposits from those caused by the graphitic schist and other geological features of the area. Geochemical data obtained from soil samples over the deposite show significant leakage anomalies indicating the mineralization at depth. The geochemical data are also helpful in the interpretation of geophysical data.

Staurolite from the Dry River South volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in northern Queensland, Australia is enriched in ZnO (2.5–6.8%) only within the massive sulfide lens or in highly pyritic biotite-chlorite schist just below the massive sulfide lens. In the footwall alteration zone, staurolite ZnO levels vary between 0.4 and 1.3%, whereas in hanging wall metagraywackes and metapelites, the ZnO content is mainly below 1.0%.As staurolite from metapelitec rocks contains up to 7.9% ZnO, high ZnO levels in staurolite do not necessarily indicate a relationship to Zn-rich massive sulfide. Staurolite grains from the Dry River South amd other massive sulfide lenses have low TiO2 concentrations (mainly <0.4%) relative to staurolite grains from metasediments and alteration zones (mainly >0.4%). The low concentration of TiO2 in staurolite from the massive sulfide lens results from the low initial Ti concentration in exhalative ores. High ZnO and low TiO2 values are indicative of staurolite associated with Zn-rich massive sulfide.Zincian staurolite is a potential exploration indicator at both prospect and reconnaissance scales. At the prospect scale, zinc levels have potential in distinguishing true from false gossans, distinguishing low grade portions of massive sulfide lenses from barren massive pyrite bodies, and characterizing alteration zones. At the reconnaissance scale, staurolite can be collected in the heavy mineral fraction of stream sediments, and multiple grains can be analyzed rapidly using modern electron microprobes.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMA-II infrared spectrometer. The Al–OH band was used to derive information on the octahedral Al content and the abundance of white mica (sericite) in the hydrothermal alteration and mineralization system. The range of the Al–OH band wavelength from 2192 nm to 2222 nm corresponds to the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica approximately from 3.9 to 3.0 (based on 4 octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range represents a significant compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Furthermore, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variation of white mica is spatially related to hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that phengitic white mica tends to occur in 1) main upflow fluid channel, 2) intensely altered volcanic rocks, and 3) Pb–Zn mineralization, whereas muscovitic white mica was formed preferentially distal to massive sulfide mineralization on the margin of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the Al–OH band wavelength, and therefore the octahedral Al content, of white mica can be used as vectors to mineralization to map the hydrothermal system at Hellyer.
