Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is a novel data analysis technique for nonlinear and non-stationary data. We present a time-frequency analysis of both simulated light curves and an X-ray burst from the X-ray burster 4U 1702-429 with both the HHT and the Windowed Fast Fourier Transform (WFFT) methods. Our results show that the HHT method has failed in all cases for light curves with Poissonian fluctuations which are typical for all photon counting instruments used in astronomy, whereas the WFFT method can sensitively detect the periodic signals in the presence of Poissonian fluctuations; the only drawback of the WFFT method is that it cannot detect sharp frequency variations accurately.  相似文献

Many astrophysical problems arising within the context of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, very-high energy gamma rays or neutrinos require calculation of the flux produced by sources tracing the distribution of galaxies in the Universe. We discuss a simple weighting scheme, an application of the method introduced by Lynden-Bell in 1971, that allows the calculation of the flux sky map directly from a flux-limited galaxy catalogue without cutting a volume-limited subsample. Using this scheme, the galaxy distribution can be modelled up to large scales while representing the distribution in the nearby Universe with maximum accuracy. We consider fluctuations in the flux map arising from the finiteness of the galaxy sample. We show how these fluctuations are reduced by the weighting scheme and discuss how the remaining fluctuations limit the applicability of the method.  相似文献

The fluctuations of radio emission of the atmosphere (for the present only cloudy) are a substantial limiting factor for observations of cosmic radio sources on centimetre and millimetre wavelengths. For suppressing these fluctuations the dual-beam method (differential receiving from two slightly separated direction) is widely used. At the same time works for perfecting this method are going on as well as in searching other possibilities with the principal aim of doing away limitations on sizes of sources under observation. There are considered here these methods with a competitive evaluation of their possibilities for suppressing fluctuation of the atmosphere radio emissions.  相似文献

Topological defect theories lead to non-Gaussian features on maps of fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), which enable us to distinguish them from maps predicted by standard inflationary models. We have recently presented a maximum entropy method (MEM) which simultaneously deconvolves interferometer maps of CMBR fluctuations, and separates out foreground contaminants. By applying this method to simulated observations using a realistic ground-based interferometer, we demonstrate that it is possible to recover the prominent hotspots in the CMBR maps which delineate individual defects, even in the presence of a significant Galactic foreground.  相似文献

Secondary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) can be detected by using the cross-correlation between the large-scale structure (LSS) and the CMB temperature fluctuations. In such studies, chance correlations of primordial CMB fluctuations with the LSS are the main source of uncertainty. We present a method for reducing this noise by exploiting information contained in the polarization of CMB photons. The method is described in general terms and then applied to our recently proposed optimal method for measuring the integrated Sachs–Wolfe (ISW) effect. We obtain an expected signal-to-noise ratio of up to 8.5. This corresponds to an enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio by 23 per cent as compared to the standard method for ISW detection, and by 16 per cent w.r.t. our recently proposed method, both for the best-case scenario of having perfect (noiseless) CMB and LSS data.  相似文献

A study of the Earth’s rotation in space reveals a complex pattern of variations in its orientation, the excitation mechanisms of these variations, and their manifestations in various natural processes. The Earth’s rotation rate is not constant but exhibits complex fluctuations that account for some fraction of 108 (corresponding to variations of several milliseconds (ms) in the length of the day). These variations span a wide spectrum of time scales, from hours to centuries or longer, reflecting the fact that they are produced by a wide variety of geophysical and astronomical processes. We discuss the results of our statistical comparison of long series of observations to reveal the most coherent variations. The spectral composition of the experimental time series has been determined using modified periodogram and single-channel autoregression methods. A comparative analysis has been performed by a two-channel autoregression spectral estimation method. The results of our comparison of the time series suggest that the fluctuations with periods of about 73 years are highly coherent.  相似文献

Data from the 13 May 1971 β Scorpii occultation by the southern polar region of Jupiter (Vapillon et al., 1973, Astron. Astrophys. 29, 135-149) are re-analyzed with current methods. We correct the previous results for an inacurrate background estimation and calculate new temperature profiles, that are now consistent with the results of other observers of this occultation, as well as with the current knowledge of the jovian atmosphere. The characteristics of the profiles of temperature gradient and the spectral behavior of the temperature fluctuations are found to be similar to the results of previous investigations of planetary atmospheres and in agreement with the presence of atmospheric propagating gravity waves in the jovian atmosphere. We use a wavelet analysis of the temperature profiles to identify the dominant modes of wave activity and compare the reconstructed temperature fluctuations to model-generated gravity waves.  相似文献

Using the metric conformal transformation and simple path integral, Feynman propagator method, for computing its quantum fluctuations, we analyse the radiation dominated anisotropic Bianchi Type I cosmology. We proceed to show that the quantum conformal fluctuations diverge at the classical spacetime singularity, suggesting that a singularity free solution can exist in anisotropic cosmology in the quantum regime. Since the December 1998 issue of this journal was delayed, we were able to include this paper in this issue.  相似文献

We review the problem of fluctuations in particle shower theory. By using a generalization of Furry equation, we find relations between the n-particle correlation function and the number of particles average or 1-particle correlation function. Such relations show that the average is the only independent dynamical variable. We also develop a numerical code to solve the equation for the correlation functions and compare the results with those from a Monte Carlo simulation which show a perfect agreement between both methods.  相似文献

The presence of convective and turbulent motions, and the evolution of magnetic fields give rise to existence of temperature fluctuations in stellar atmospheres, active galactic nuclei and other cosmic objects. We observe the time and surface averaged radiation fluxes from these objects. These fluxes depend on both the mean temperature and averaged temperature fluctuations. The usual photosphere models do not take into account the temperature fluctuations and use only the distribution of the mean temperature into surface layers of stars. We investigate how the temperature fluctuations change the spectra in continuum assuming that the degree of fluctuations (the ratio of mean temperature fluctuation to the mean temperature) is small. We suggest the procedure of calculation of continuum spectra, which takes into account the temperature fluctuations. As a first step one uses the usual model of a photosphere without fluctuations. The observed spectrum is presented as a part depending on mean temperature and the additional part proportional to quadratic value of fluctuation degree. It is shown that for some forms of absorption factor the additional part in Wien’s region of spectrum can be evaluated directly from observed spectrum. This part depends on the first and second wavelength derivatives, which can be calculated numerically from the observed spectrum. Our estimates show that the temperature dependence of absorption factors is very important by calculation of continuum spectra corrections. As the examples we present the estimates for a few stars from Pulkovo spectrophotometric catalog and for the Sun. The influence of temperature fluctuations on color indices of observed cosmic objects is also investigated.  相似文献

We perform the correlation and spectral analysis of phase-space density and potential fluctuations in a model of an open star cluster for various values of the smoothing parameter ? of the force functions in the equations of motion of cluster stars, and compute the mutual correlation functions for the fluctuations of potential U and phase-space density f of the cluster model at different clustercentric distances. We use the Fourier transform of the mutual correlation functions to compute the power spectra and dispersion curves of the potential and phase-space density fluctuations. The spectrum of potential fluctuations proves to be less complex than that of phase-space density fluctuations. The most powerful potential fluctuations are associated with phase-space density fluctuations, and their spectrum lies in the domain of low frequencies ν < 3/τ v.r.; at intermediate and high frequencies (ν > 3/τ v.r.), the contribution of potential fluctuations to those of the phase-space density is small or equal to zero (here τ v.r. is the violent relaxation time scale of the cluster). We find a number of unstable potential fluctuations in the core of the cluster model (up to 30 pairs of fluctuations with different complex conjugate frequencies). We also find and analyze the dependences of the spectra and dispersion curves of phase-space density and potential fluctuations on ?. We find a “repeatability” (significant correlation) of the spectra at some values of parameter ?. The form of the dispersion curve is unstable against small variations of ?. We discuss the astrophysical applications of our results: the break-up in the cluster core of the phase-space density wave running from the cluster periphery toward its center into several waves with frequencies commensurable to that of the external (tidal) influence; emission and reflection of phase-space and potential waves near the cluster core boundary; possible wavelength and phase discretization of the phase-space and potential waves in the cluster model.  相似文献

Using simple path integral, Feynman propagator method and the relation between conformal timeη and scale factor Τ, we investigate the non-conformal quantum fluctuations (of expansion and shear) and axisymmetric singularity case in radiation dominated anisotropic cosmology. We show that near the classical singularity the quantum fluctuations tend to diverge. A non-telescopic method of determining the quality of atmospheric seeing is discussed for large angular diameter objects, such as the Sun. In this method the concept of thermodynamic fluctuations is used to relate the observed intensity fluctuations to the r.m.s. angular diameter of the atmospheric seeing cells and telescopic angle of arrival fluctuations. Comparison between the measured r.m.s. cell size and telescopic angle of arrival fluctuations are presented for various degrees of seeing. Cross-correlation coefficients of 0.95 have been measured during such comparisons.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. Recently, Jenkins et al. [6] reported on fluctuations in the detected decay events of 36Cl which were measured with a Geiger–Müller counter. Experimental data of 32Si measured by means of an end-window gas-flow proportional counter at the Brookhaven National Laboratory show similar periodicity, albeit a different amplitude. Jenkins et al. interpret the fluctuations as evidence of solar influence on the decay rates of beta-decaying radionuclides. In this work, liquid scintillation counting was used to check for potential variations in the 36Cl decay rates. A custom-built counter with three photomultiplier tubes was used. In contrast to commercial counters, the relevant parameters of our system are well controlled and the discrimination threshold and HV setting can be adjusted and checked. The experimental data were analyzed by means of the triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) method which is a primary method for activity determination. Thus, our results do not depend on any other standard or reference source. Our data show fluctuations which are by more than one order of magnitude lower than those seen in the experiment using a Geiger–Müller counter. More importantly, no oscillation could be identified. Interestingly, our data overlap in time with those from Jenkins et al. [6]. We do not observe the phase and amplitude as seen by Jenkins and conclude that the fluctuations are not due to solar influence. This also implies that the interpretation by Jenkins et al. is false.  相似文献

We consider the image formation for an extremely distant source in an optically dense, homogeneous, and isotropic medium. We show that the angular size of the image would presently be θ0 ≈ 10′, irrespective of the initial redshift z. Parameters of the inhomogeneities capable of producing the observed effect were estimated. We note that this effect should be taken into account for the baryon density fluctuations that were damped according to Silk at the prerecombination epoch. The spot radiation spectrum is shown to be a diluted Planckian spectrum with a dilution factor much larger than unity. We also point out the presence of peculiar tangential polarization in the spot, which reaches several tens of percent at the spot edge. All these observational features clearly distinguish the fluctuations under consideration from the standard fluctuations.  相似文献

The temperature of the intergalactic medium (IGM) is an important factor in determining the linewidths of the absorption lines in the Ly α forest. We present a method to characterize the linewidth distribution using a decomposition of an Ly α spectrum in terms of discrete wavelets. Such wavelets form an orthogonal basis, so the decomposition is unique. We demonstrate using hydrodynamic simulations that the mean and dispersion of the wavelet amplitudes are strongly correlated with both the temperature of the absorbing gas and its dependence on the gas density. Since wavelets are also localized in space, we are able to analyse the temperature distribution as a function of position along the spectrum. We illustrate how this method could be used to identify fluctuations in the IGM temperature that might result from late reionization or local effects.  相似文献

Hardly any of the observed black hole accretion disks in X-ray binaries and active galaxies shows constant flux. When the local stochastic variations of the disk occur at specific regions where a resonant behaviour takes place, there appear the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). If the global structure of the flow and its non-linear hydrodynamics affects the fluctuations, the variability is chaotic in the sense of deterministic chaos. Our aim is to solve a problem of the stochastic versus deterministic nature of the black hole binary variabilities. We use both observational and analytic methods. We use the recurrence analysis and we study the occurence of long diagonal lines in the recurrence plot of observed data series and compare it to the surrogate series. We analyze here the data of two X-ray binaries – XTE J1550-564 and GX 339-4 observed by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. In these sources, the non-linear variability is expected because of the global conditions (such as the mean accretion rate) leading to the possible instability of an accretion disk. The thermal-viscous instability and fluctuations around the fixed-point solution occurs at high accretion rate, when the radiation pressure gives dominant contribution to the stress tensor.  相似文献

We present predictions for the one-point probability distribution and cumulants of the transmitted QSO flux in the high redshift Lyman- α forest. We make use of the correlation between the Lyman- α optical depth and the underlying matter density predicted by gravitational instability theory and seen in numerical hydrodynamic simulations. We have modelled the growth of matter fluctuations using the non-linear shear‐free dynamics, an approximation which reproduces well the results of perturbation theory for the cumulants in the linear and weakly non-linear clustering regime. As high matter overdensities tend to saturate in spectra, the statistics of the flux distribution are dominated by weakly non-linear overdensities. As a result, our analytic approach can produce accurate predictions, when tested against N -body simulation results, even when the underlying matter field has root-mean-square fluctuations larger than unity. Our treatment can be applied to either Gaussian or non-Gaussian initial conditions. Here we concentrate on the former case, but also include a study of a specific non-Gaussian model. We discuss how the methods and predictions we present can be used as a tool to study the generic clustering properties of the Lyman- α forest at high redshift. With such an approach, rather than concentrating on simulating specific cosmological models, we may be in a position to directly test our assumptions for the Gaussian nature of the initial conditions, and the gravitational instability origin of structure itself. In a separate paper we present results for two-point statistics.  相似文献

Continuous measurements of the geomagnetic field variations at ground stations are important to investigate several aspects of magnetospheric dynamics related to variations in the solar wind conditions which, ultimately, originate from the Sun. We present a comparative analysis of geomagnetic field measurements at several ground stations with simultaneous magnetospheric and interplanetary observations in order to understand the origin and characteristics of the observed fluctuations. The results suggest that long period geomagnetic field fluctuations can be directly driven by solar wind density fluctuations at the same frequencies via the modulation of the magnetopause current. We also discuss the possible occurrence of additional contributions related with cavity/waveguide resonances of the entire magnetosphere as well as those of resonance processes of the geomagnetic field lines.  相似文献

We investigate a spatially flat cold dark matter model (with the matter density parameter     with a primordial feature in the initial power spectrum. We assume that there is a bump in the power spectrum of density fluctuations at wavelengths     , which corresponds to the scale of superclusters of galaxies . There are indications for such a feature in the power spectra derived from redshift surveys and also in the power spectra derived from peculiar velocities of galaxies. We study the mass function of clusters of galaxies, the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations, the rms bulk velocity and the rms peculiar velocity of clusters of galaxies. The baryon density is assumed to be consistent with the big bang nucleosynthesis value. We show that with an appropriately chosen feature in the power spectrum of density fluctuations at the scale of superclusters, the mass function of clusters, the CMB power spectrum, the rms bulk velocity and the rms peculiar velocity of clusters are in good agreement with the observed data.  相似文献
