We present R-band galaxy luminosity functions (GLFs) from aspectroscopic sample of six nearby rich galaxy clusters. In addition to individual cluster GLFs, extending to, in one case, M R=–14, we also present composite GLFs for cluster and field galaxies toM R=–17. All six cluster samples are consistent with the composite GLF, but there is evidence that the GLF of the quiescent population in clusters is not universal. Furthermore, the GLF of quiescent galaxies is significantly steeper in clusters than in the field. The overall GLF in clusters is consistent with that of field galaxies, except for the luminous tip, which is enhanced in clusters versus the field. We determine the mass profile of a synthetic cluster built from the combination of 59 nearby clusters observed in the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS). We use ellipticals and S0s as tracers of the cluster potential, and solve the Jeans equation assuming isotropic orbits. Such an assumption is justified by the analysis of the shape of the velocity distribution of ellipticals and S0s. We find that the cluster mass profile is consistent with the Navarro, Frenk and White(NFW) model. We use this cluster mass profile to search for equilibrium solutions for the other cluster galaxy populations: very bright ellipticals (M R ≤–22+5 log h),early-type spirals (Sa-Sb), and late-type spirals and irregulars (Sbc-Ir), together with emission-line galaxies. We find equilibrium solutions for both the early- and the late-spirals, but not for the very bright ellipticals. The dynamics of very bright ellipticals is probably affected by dissipative processes which invalidate the use of the collisionless Jeans equation. The equilibrium solution found for the early-spirals implies them to move on nearly-isotropic orbits. Late-spirals are instead found to be on mildly radial orbits, with the radial anisotropy increasing outwards. We discuss the implications of these results for the evolutionary histories of the different populations of cluster galaxies. We analyze the properties of the clusters of galaxies in the region of the Ursa Major (UMa) supercluster using observational data from SDSS and 2MASS catalogs. The region studied includes a supercluster (with a galaxy and cluster overdensity of 3 and 15, respectively) and field clusters inside the 150-Mpc diameter surrounding region. The total dynamical mass of 10 clusters of galaxies in UMa is equal to 2.25 × 1015 M , and the mass of 11 clusters of galaxies in the UMa neighborhood is equal to 1.70 × 1015 M . The fraction of early-type galaxies brighter than M K * + 1 in the virialized regions of clusters is, on the average, equal to 70%, and it is virtually independent on the mass of the cluster. The fraction of these galaxies and their average photometric parameters are almost the same both for UMa clusters and for the clusters located in its surroundings. Parameters of the clusters of galaxies, such as infrared luminosities up to a fixed magnitude, the mass-to-luminosity ratio, and the number of galaxies have almost the same correlations with the cluster mass as in other samples of galaxies clusters. However, the scatter of these parameters for UMa member clusters is twice smaller than the corresponding scatter for field clusters, possibly, due to the common origin of UMa clusters and synchronized dynamical evolution of clusters in the supercluster.  相似文献

Results from a statistical study of Kazarian galaxies and the objects surrounding them are presented. It is shown that: (1) the sample of Kazarian galaxies up to 16m.0 is complete. (2) Roughly 35.7% of the Kazarian galaxies are members of clusters, 14.0% of groups, and 13.6% of binary systems, while 36.7% are single galaxies. (3) Of the 580 Kazarian galaxies, roughly 61.2% are infrared, 8.8% radio, and 2.8% x-ray sources. (4) The relative numbers of Kazarian galaxies for complete samples of I, R, and X in the different groups are systematically higher than the corresponding numbers for samples of all Kazarian galaxies.  相似文献

Gravitational flexion has been introduced as a technique by which one can map out and study substructure in clusters of galaxies. Previous analyses involving flexion have measured the individual galaxy–galaxy flexion signal, or used either parametric techniques or a Kaiser, Squires and Broadhurst (KSB)-type inversion to reconstruct the mass distribution in Abell 1689. In this paper, we present an aperture mass statistic for flexion, and apply it to the lensed images of background galaxies obtained by ray-tracing simulations through a simple analytic mass distribution and through a galaxy cluster from the Millennium Simulation. We show that this method is effective at detecting and accurately tracing structure within clusters of galaxies on subarcminute scales with high signal to noise even using a moderate background source number density and image resolution. In addition, the method provides much more information about both the overall shape and the small-scale structure of a cluster of galaxies than can be achieved through a weak lensing mass reconstruction using gravitational shear data. Lastly, we discuss how the zero-points of the aperture mass might be used to infer the masses of structures identified using this method.  相似文献

A sample of 11 thousand galaxies with radial velocities V LG < 3500 km/s is used to study the features of the local distribution of luminous (stellar) and dark matter within a sphere of radius of around 50 Mpc around us. The average density of matter in this volume, ?? m,loc = 0.08 ± 0.02, turns out to be much lower than the global cosmic density ?? m,glob = 0.28 ± 0.03. We discuss three possible explanations of this paradox: 1) galaxy groups and clusters are surrounded by extended dark halos, the major part of the mass of which is located outside their virial radii; 2) the considered local volume of the Universe is not representative, being situated inside a giant void; and 3) the bulk of matter in the Universe is not related to clusters and groups, but is rather distributed between them in the form of massive dark clumps. Some arguments in favor of the latter assumption are presented. Besides the two well-known inconsistencies of modern cosmological models with the observational data: the problem of missing satellites of normal galaxies and the problem of missing baryons, there arises another one??the issue of missing dark matter.  相似文献

The location of galaxies in 377 rich Abell galaxy clusters is discussed. We compared the distributions of galaxies in the sample containing all galaxies with the sample compiled from the 20 brightest objects. Counts in circular sectors with angle width equal to 30î show isotropy. Only in the case of BM I clusters and the coordinate system related to the cluster major axis did we find anisotropic distributions. We investigated also the distributions of galaxy position angles within clusters exhibiting isotropy. The structure position angles for both samples have been studied as well. They appeared to be different. The difference in location of galaxies in the case of cD clusters, as well as the more elliptical shape and different position angles of samples containing bright galaxies is observed.  相似文献

We review and discuss horizontal branch (HB) stars in a broad astrophysical context, including both variable and non-variable stars. A reassessment of the Oosterhoff dichotomy is presented, which provides unprecedented detail regarding its origin and systematics. We show that the Oosterhoff dichotomy and the distribution of globular clusters in the HB morphology-metallicity plane both exclude, with high statistical significance, the possibility that the Galactic halo may have formed from the accretion of dwarf galaxies resembling present-day Milky Way satellites such as Fornax, Sagittarius, and the LMC—an argument which, due to its strong reliance on the ancient RR Lyrae stars, is essentially independent of the chemical evolution of these systems after the very earliest epochs in the Galaxy’s history. Convenient analytical fits to isochrones in the HB type–[Fe/H] plane are also provided. In this sense, a rediscussion of the second-parameter problem is also presented, focusing on the cases of NGC 288/NGC 362, M13/M3, the extreme outer-halo globular clusters with predominantly red HBs, and the metal-rich globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. The recently revived possibility that the helium abundance may play an important role as a second parameter is also addressed, and possible constraints on this scenario discussed. We critically discuss the possibility that the observed properties of HB stars in NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 might be accounted for if these clusters possess a relatively minor population of helium-enriched stars. A technique is proposed to estimate the HB types of extragalactic globular clusters on the basis of integrated far-UV photometry. The importance of bright type II Cepheids as tracers of faint blue HB stars in distant systems is also emphasized. The relationship between the absolute V magnitude of the HB at the RR Lyrae level and metallicity, as obtained on the basis of trigonometric parallax measurements for the star RR Lyr, is also revisited. Taking into due account the evolutionary status of RR Lyr, the derived relation implies a true distance modulus to the LMC of (mM)0=18.44±0.11. Techniques providing discrepant slopes and zero points for the M V (RRL)–[Fe/H] relation are briefly discussed. We provide a convenient analytical fit to theoretical model predictions for the period change rates of RR Lyrae stars in globular clusters, and compare the model results with the available data. Finally, the conductive opacities used in evolutionary calculations of low-mass stars are also investigated. M. Catelan is John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow.  相似文献

A sample of 41 radio-galaxies with 13.0m corr15.5 has been analyzed to test the angular redshift anisotropy discovered on Sc I galaxies by Rubin, Rubin and Ford. The sample does not present their anisotropy but contains an even more curious distribution of radial velocities which suggests that the Rubin-Ford effect results from an anomalous redshift of light when it travels through clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

The results of deep radio, sub-mm and X-ray observations of samples of high redshift (z∼1) clusters are presented. These reveal significant excesses of active galaxies associated with the clusters at all three wavelengths. The cluster radio source population shows evolution consistent with the (1+z)3 evolution typical of many AGN classes. A large fraction of the AGN are hosted by apparently passive early-type galaxies, often with a close companion. These results essentially constitute the detection of a counterpart of the Butcher-Oemler effect for both strongly star bursting galaxies and AGN. We present the first results of our X‐shooter observations for a sample of dwarf (–17 < MB < –15) galaxies in nearby (0.04 < z < 0.07) galaxy clusters. This luminosity range is fundamental to trace the evolution of higher‐z star‐forming cluster galaxies down to the present day, and to explore the galaxy scaling relations of early‐type galaxies over a broad mass range. Thanks to high resolution and availability of several lines we can derive the velocity dispersion of the galaxies in this range of luminosities and we begin the construction of the fundamental plane of faint early‐type galaxies (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We investigated the properties of galaxy clusters in the region of the Hercules supercluster using observational data from the SDSS and 2MASS catalogs and the NED. We have selected 13 galaxy clusters with a total dynamical mass of 4.82 × 1015 M in a 100 × 45 Mpc supercluster region in the plane of the sky (0.030 < z < 0.041). In addition, our sample includes eight clusters from the immediate neighborhoods of the superclusters and ten field clusters at the same z. The derived properties of the rich Hercules supercluster are shown in comparison with the data for the poor Leo supercluster. The main parameters of the virialized galaxy cluster regions in the near infrared (K s ) for the Hercules supercluster differ from those for the Leo supercluster: the number of galaxies and the total luminosity (to a limiting magnitude of ?21 · m 5) increase with cluster mass (L K,200M 200 0.91±0.07 and N 200M 200 0.94±0.07 ), but the dependences are steeper by 0.28 and 0.22. In the virialized cluster regions, the fraction of early-type galaxies selected by the bulge contribution, concentration index, and u t= r color is, on average, 66% (60% in Leo, 70% in the field) among the galaxies brighter than ?23 · m 3 and 54% (51% in Leo, 61% in the field) among the galaxies brighter than ?22 · m 3. The fraction of early-type galaxies in the superclusters does not change with galaxy cluster mass and luminosity. The composite luminosity function of the rich Hercules supercluster is described by a Schechter function and does not differ from the luminosity function of the poor Leo supercluster for the luminosity interval [?26 m , ?21 · m 5] but differs from the field luminosity function at the same z determined from ten galaxy clusters.  相似文献

Images of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field are analyzed to obtain a catalog of galaxies for which the angular sizes, surface brightness, photometric redshifts, and absolute magnitudes are found. The catalog contains a total of about 4000 galaxies identified at a high signal-to-noise ratio, which allows the cosmological relations angular size—redshift and surface brightness-redshift to be analyzed. The parameters of the evolution of linear sizes and surface brightness of distant galaxies in the redshift interval 0.5–6.5 are estimated in terms of a grid of cosmological models with different density parameters (Ω V ; Ω m ). The distribution of photometric redshifts of galaxies is analyzed and possible superlarge inhomogeneities in the radial distribution of galaxies are found with scale lengths as large as 2000 Mpc.  相似文献

In the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, we study the properties of voids and of fainter galaxies within voids that are defined by brighter galaxies. Our results are compared with simulated galaxy catalogues from the Millennium simulation coupled with a semi-analytical galaxy formation recipe. We derive the void size distribution and discuss its dependence on the faint magnitude limit of the galaxies defining the voids. While voids among faint galaxies are typically smaller than those among bright galaxies, the ratio of the void sizes to the mean galaxy separation reaches larger values. This is well reproduced in the mock galaxy samples studied. We provide analytic fitting functions for the void size distribution. Furthermore, we study the galaxy population inside voids defined by galaxies with   B J− 5 log  h < −20  and diameter larger than  10  h −1 Mpc  . We find a clear bimodality of galaxies inside voids and in the average field but with different characteristics. The abundance of blue cloud galaxies inside voids is enhanced. There is an indication of a slight blueshift of the blue cloud. Furthermore, galaxies in void centres have slightly higher specific star formation rates as measured by the η parameter. We determine the radial distribution of the ratio of early- and late-type galaxies through the voids. We find and discuss some differences between observations and the Millennium catalogues.  相似文献

The dynamical masses of dwarf-spheroidals, spiral and elliptical galaxies, dwarf irregular binaries, groups of galaxies and clusters are shown to lie in a band about the M ∼ ρR3 line. The value of ρ is approximately the same as that estimated for unseen matter in the solar neighbourhood. The clusters themselves lie about theM ∼ R -3 line derived for a self-gravitating neutrino gas; their masses are distributed around the maximum Jeans-mass, MJmax. corresponding to mv - 10 eV in an expanding universe. The present day length scales of clusters and the dispersion in the velocities observed within them are understood in terms of a 100-fold expansion subsequent to the initial growth of the fluctuations at MJmax. These systematics on theR-M plane imply that the initial condensations in the expanding universe are on the scale of the rich clusters of galaxies, these condensations were triggered dominantly by the gravitation of the neutrinos and the constant density of al systems arises naturally due to the embedding of these systems in the large scale neutrino condensations. If the neutrino density falls off asr -2 beyond the cluster edge till the distributions from different clusters overlap, then the mean density of the neutrinos approximately equals the closure density of the universe.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the orientations of 1433 galaxies found in the region  15h 48m≤α(2000) ≤ 19h 28m, −68°≤δ(2000) ≤−62°  . In this region we investigated three Abell clusters (S0794, S0797, S0805) of richness Class 0 and the Triangulum Australis cluster. Our aim is to examine non-random effects in galaxy orientations in clusters. In addition, we classified the investigated galaxies into subsamples on the basis of their axial ratio, major diameter and morphology. The spin vector orientations of total galaxies in the investigated region is found to be random. No preferred orientation is found in the clusters. We could not note any morphological dependence of the galaxy orientations in our samples. No preferred orientations can be seen for the spiral galaxies. The morphologically unidentified galaxies, galaxies having major diameters of <47 arcsec, and the nearly edge-on galaxies  ( b / a < 0.5, 0.4 < b / a ≤ 0.5)  show anisotropy: spin vectors of galaxies tend to be oriented perpendicular to the Local Supercluster plane and spin vector projections tend to point radially with respect to the Virgo cluster centre.  相似文献

We measure the relative evolution of the number of bright and faint (as faint as  0.05 L *)  red galaxies in a sample of 28 clusters, out of which 16 are at  0.50 ≤ z ≤ 1.27  , all observed through a pair of filters bracketing the 4000-Å break rest frame. The abundance of red galaxies, relative to bright ones, is constant over all the studied redshift range,  0 < z < 1.3  , and rules out a differential evolution between bright and faint red galaxies as large as claimed in some past works. Faint red galaxies are largely assembled and in place at   z = 1.3  and their abundance does not depend on cluster mass, parametrized by velocity dispersion or X-ray luminosity. Our analysis, with respect to the previous one, samples a wider redshift range, minimizes systematics and put a more attention to statistical issues, keeping at the same time a large number of clusters.  相似文献

Based on data from the Two-Micrometer All-Sky Survey (2MASS), we analyzed the infrared properties of 451 Local-Volume galaxies at distances D ≤ 10 Mpc. We determined the K-band luminosity function of the galaxies in the range of absolute magnitudes from ?25m to ?11m. The local luminosity density within 8 Mpc is 6.8 × 108L Mpc?3, a factor of 1.5 ± 0.1 higher than the global mean K-band luminosity density. We determined the ratios of the virial mass to the K-band luminosity for nearby groups and clusters of galaxies. In the luminosity range from 5 × 1010 to 2 × 1013L, the dependence log(M/LK) ∝ (0.27 ± 0.03) log LK with a dispersion of ~0.1 comparable to the measurement errors of the masses and luminosities of the systems of galaxies holds for the groups and clusters of galaxies. The ensemble-averaged ratio, 〈M/LK〉 ? (20–25) M/L, was found to be much smaller than the expected global ratio, (80–90)M/L, in the standard model with Ωm = 0.27. This discrepancy can be eliminated if the bulk of the dark matter in the Universe is not associated with galaxies and their systems.  相似文献

In this paper we study the relations between the main characteristics of groups and clusters of galaxies using the archival data of the SDSS and 2MASX catalogs. We have developed and implemented a new method of determining the size of galaxy systems and their effective radius which contains half of the galaxies and not half the luminosity, since the luminosity of the brightest galaxy in a group can account for over 50% of the total luminosity of the group. The derived parameters (log LK, logRe, and log σ200) for 94 systems of galaxies (0.0038 < z < 0.09) determine the Fundamental Plane (FP), which, with a scatter of 0.15, is similar in form to the FP of galaxy clusters obtained by Schaeffer et al. (1993) and D’Onofrio et al. (2013) with other methods and for different bands. We show that the FP in the near-infrared region (NIR) for 94 galaxy systems has the form of LK\(R_e^{0.70 \pm {{0.13}_\sigma }1.34 \pm 0.13}\), whereas in x-rays it has the form of—LX\(R_e^{1.15 \pm {{0.39}_\sigma }2.56 \pm 0.40}\). The form of the FP for groups and clusters is consistent with the FP for early-type galaxies determined in the same way. The form of the FP for galaxy systems deviates from the shape that one would expect from virial predictions. Adding the mass-to-light ratio as a fourth independent parameter has little effect on this deviation, but decreases the scatter of the FP for a sample of rich galaxy clusters by 12%.  相似文献

The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献
