The Edinburgh-Cape Blue Object Survey is a major survey to discover blue stellar objects brighter than B 18 in the southern sky. It is covering an area of sky of 10,000 square degrees with |b| > 30° and < 0°. The blue stellar objects are selected by automatic techniques from U and B pairs of UK Schmidt Telescope plates scanned with the COSMOS measuring machine. Follow-up photometry and spectroscopy are being obtained with the SAAO telescopes to classify objects brighter than B = 16.5. This paper describes the survey, the techniques used to extract the blue stellar objects, the photometric accuracy, the spectroscopic classification, and the completeness of the survey.  相似文献

We present the spectra, positions, and finding charts for 31 bright ( R <19.3) colour-selected quasars covering the redshift range z =3.85–4.78, with four having redshifts z >4.5. The majority are in the southern sky ( δ <−25°). The quasar candidates were selected for their red ( B J− R ≳2.5) colours from UK or POSSII Schmidt Plates scanned at the Automated Plate Measuring (APM) facility in Cambridge. Low-resolution (≳ 10 Å) spectra were obtained to identify the quasars, primarily at the Las Campanas Observatory. The highest redshift quasar in our survey is at z ≈4.8 ( R =18.7) and its spectrum shows a damped Ly α absorption system at z =4.46. This is currently the highest redshift damped Ly α absorber detected. Five of these quasars exhibit intrinsic broad absorption line features. Combined with the previously published results from the first part of the APM United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (UKST) survey we have now surveyed a total of ∼8000 deg2 of sky i.e. 40 per cent of the high galactic latitude (| b |>30°) sky, resulting in 59 optically selected quasars in the redshift range 3.85 to 4.78; 49 of which have z ≥4.00.  相似文献

We present survey data in the narrow-band L filter (nb L ), taken at UKIRT, for a total area of 277 arcmin2, roughly equally divided between four regions at zero Galactic latitude and longitudes ±4.°3 and ±2.°3. The 80 per cent completeness level for these observations is at roughly magnitude 11.0. This magnitude limit, owing to the low coefficient for interstellar extinction at this wavelength ( A nb L =0.047 AV ), allows us to observe bulge giants. We match the nb L magnitudes with DENIS survey K magnitudes, and find 95 per cent of nb L sources are matched to K sources. Constructing colour–magnitude diagrams, we deredden the magnitudes and find evidence for a longitude-dependent asymmetry in the source counts. We find that there are ∼15 per cent and ∼5 per cent more sources at the negative longitude than at the corresponding positive longitude for the fields at ±4.°3 and ±2.°3, respectively. This is compared with the predictions of some Galactic bar models. We find an asymmetry in the expected sense, which favours gas dynamical models and the recent deconvolution of surface photometry data over earlier treatments of photometric data.  相似文献

Kodak Technical Pan (Tech-Pan) film is a standard panchromatic emulsion that was used at the UK 1.2-m Schmidt Telescope (UKST) for a variety of broad-band exposures between 1992 and 2003. However, despite its versatility and frequent use, no formal presentation of its colour-term stability has been provided. A sample of 32 short-exposure Tech-Pan films was specifically acquired in five wavebands with a view to establishing the photometric relationships between Tech-Pan and the equivalent glass-based emulsions previously used. These films have been measured using the SuperCOSMOS measuring machine and the data reduced to provide the appropriate quantitative information. New colour terms relating these measurements to the Cousins photoelectric system are presented. They are shown to be stable, reproducible, generally small and similar to colour terms previously derived for the older emulsions on glass that Tech-Pan effectively replaced. These results give confidence in the use of Tech-Pan photometry from on-line UKST legacy survey archives.  相似文献

We present BV photometry and simultaneous high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy of the newly-discovered γ Doradus variable HR 8330 taken during the 1997 and 1998 observing seasons. We calculate power spectra for the B - and V -band data sets and for the time series defined throughout the observing season at each point across the Fe  ii λ 4508.289 and the Ti  ii λ 4501.278 line profiles to search for periodic variability. Period analysis reveals a single, 2.6-d period in both the photometric and the spectroscopic data, with a 237° phase lag between them. Based on the location of HR 8330 in the HR diagram and the characteristics of its photometric and spectroscopic variations, we conclude that HR  8330 is a bona fide γ Doradus-type pulsating variable.  相似文献

We have applied the astrometric techniques devised by Murray for analysis of 48-inch Schmidt photographic data to SuperCOSMOS scans of UK Schmidt plates centred on Kapteyn's Selected Area 94 ( α =2h 53m, δ =0°). In this preliminary study, we combine astrometric data from four short-exposure V -band plates, taken in 1987 August (2 plates) and 1993 August (2 plates), with BVRI photometry from sky-limited plate material, to identify stars with proper motions exceeding 0.1 arcsec yr−1. This paper discusses the completeness of the resulting sample and presents spectroscopy of 30 stars with μ >0.2 arcsec yr−1. Based on the latter observations and the distribution in the [H V , ( V − I )] reduced proper-motion diagram, we have classified stars in the complete sample as candidate white dwarfs, main-sequence dwarfs and halo subdwarfs, and derived estimates of the disc and halo luminosity functions.  相似文献

Using the PDS microdensitometer at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, we have acquired U , B , V , R and I surface photometry from UK Schmidt photographic plates for all the galaxies with measured redshifts in the Durham–AAT redshift survey. By comparison with CCD photometry we show that such precision photographic photometry of galaxies off IIIa emulsions is capable of an accuracy as good as a few hundredths of a magnitude. We discuss the colour-related properties of these galaxies, and derive luminosity functions in each waveband. We show that when divided by colour, the faint-end slope of the luminosity function of the bluer galaxies is significantly steeper than that for the redder ones.  相似文献

We present simultaneous UBV uvby photometry for the 18 brightest northern Cepheids carried out between 1995 and 1997. Additionally, two fainter stars have been observed in the Johnson system only. The whole photometric data base contains about 3500 individual data points for 20 stars. The accuracy has been carefully tested with different methods. A serious systematic difference has been found between the present data set and the Stro¨mgren photometry available in the literature, which has probably been caused by the peculiar filter set used in the earlier study.   As an extension to the photometry, we took high-resolution optical spectra at David Dunlap Observatory in the red spectral region (λ/Δλ≈ 40 000, in the interval of 6200 and 6600 Å including Hα). The spectroscopic programme contained 12 stars from the photometric programme, the newly discovered bright classical Cepheid CK Cam and two double-mode Cepheids (TU Cas and CO Aur). New radial velocities obtained with the cross-correlation technique are presented. We found significant velocity differences between two cross-correlated spectral regions (6188–6220 and 6405–6435 Å) as large as 0.8–1.2 km s−1, which show very characteristic phase dependence in certain Cepheids.   Finally, recent period variations are briefly discussed in terms of phase jumps and duplicity.  相似文献

Results from a survey of the northern Galactic plane (at declination ≳ 30°) at 151 MHz made with the Cambridge Low Frequency Synthesis Telescope are presented. This survey is designated the 7C(G) — i.e. the Galactic portion of the ongoing 7C surveys. This covers the regions 80° <  l  104° and 126° <  l  < 180°, for | b | ≤ 55°., and has some coverage to | b | ≈ 9°, with a resolution of ≈ 70 × 70 cossec (δ) arcsec2 (RA × Dec.). The observations, data reduction and calibration of this survey are described, and a catalogue of 6262 compact sources, with a completeness limit of ≈ 0.25 Jy over most of the survey region, is presented. The catalogue has an rms positional accuracy of better than 10 arcsec, and the flux densities are tied to the scale of Roger, Bridle & Costain with an accuracy of better than 10 per cent.  相似文献

We present an RI photometric survey covering an area of 430 arcmin2 around the multiple star σ Orionis. The observations were conducted with the 0.8 m IAC‐80 Telescope at the Teide Observatory. The survey limiting R and I magnitudes are 22.5 and 21, and completeness magnitudes 21 and 20, respectively. We have selected 53 candidates from the I vs. RI colour‐magnitude diagram (I = 14–20) that follow the previously known photometric sequence of the cluster. Adopting an age of 2–4 Myr for the cluster, we find that these objects span a mass range from 0.35 M to 0.015 M. We have performed J‐band photometry of 52 candidates and Ks photometry for 12 of them, with the result that 50 follow the expected infrared sequence for the cluster, thus confirming with great confidence that the majority of the candidates are bona fide members. JHKs photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) is available for 50 of the candidates and are in good agreement with our data. Out of 48 candidates, which have photometric accuracies better than 0.1 mag in all bands, only three appear to show near‐infrared excesses. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Surface photometry is carried out for the photometric standard galaxy NGC 3379 on the basis of two plates in the blue band taken with the Bejing Schmidt telescope. The results, including luminosity profiles, photometric parameters, integrated luminosity distribution, ellipticity and position angle variation, are presented in various forms of figures and tables. Especially our geometric profiles, i.e., ellipticity and position angle variations reach up to 5, much fainter region than that any previous study did. The accuracy of the present data is checked by comparing them with the surface photometry in the literature. We find the zero-point 0.12 mag brighter than the calibration of de Vaucouleurs and Capaccioli (1979), which agrees with the values 0.10–0.15 mag difference claimed by recent observations. The systematic differences is found to be less than 0.1 mag.  相似文献

We present a detailed multiwavelength photometric study of giant H  ii regions NGC 592 and NGC 588 in the nearby small spiral galaxy M33. We use data taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on board the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ). We detect several massive stars in both ionizing clusters. Six Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars are known to exist within those regions and we are able to constrain their physical properties by comparing their photometry to the latest grid of model atmospheres for WR stars of the nitrogen sequence (WN subclass). We estimate the age and mass of both regions by fitting our photometry to models of integrated stellar populations.  相似文献

We present an algorithm (MEAD, for 'Mapping Extinction Against Distance') which will determine intrinsic  ( r '− i ')  colour, extinction, and distance for early-A to K4 stars extracted from the IPHAS   r '/ i '/Hα  photometric data base. These data can be binned up to map extinction in three dimensions across the northern Galactic plane. The large size of the IPHAS data base (∼200 million unique objects), the accuracy of the digital photometry it contains and its faint limiting magnitude  ( r '∼ 20)  allow extinction to be mapped with fine angular (∼10 arcmin) and distance (∼ 0.1 kpc) resolution to distances of up to 10 kpc, outside the solar circle. High reddening within the solar circle on occasion brings this range down to ∼2 kpc. The resolution achieved, both in angle and depth, greatly exceeds that of previous empirical 3D extinction maps, enabling the structure of the Galactic Plane to be studied in increased detail. MEAD accounts for the effect of the survey magnitude limits, photometric errors, unresolved interstellar medium (ISM) substructure and binarity. The impact of metallicity variations, within the range typical of the Galactic disc is small. The accuracy and reliability of MEAD are tested through the use of simulated photometry created with Monte Carlo sampling techniques. The success of this algorithm is demonstrated on a selection of fields and the results are compared to the literature.  相似文献

We present the first data release from the second epoch Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS-2). MGPS-2 was carried out with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope at a frequency of 843 MHz and with a restoring beam of 45 × 45      arcsec2, making it the highest resolution large-scale radio survey of the southern Galactic plane. It covers the range  | b | < 10° and 245° < l < 365°  , and is the Galactic counterpart to the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) which covers the whole southern sky with  δ≤−30° (| b | > 10°  ).
In this paper, we present the MGPS-2 compact source catalogue. The catalogue has 48 850 sources above a limiting peak brightness of 10 mJy beam−1. Positions in the catalogue are accurate to 1–2 arcsec. A full catalogue including extended sources is in preparation. We have carried out an analysis of the compact source density across the Galactic plane and find that the source density is not statistically higher than the density expected from the extragalactic source density alone.
We also present version 2.0 of the SUMSS image data and catalogue which is now available online. The data consist of 629 4.3°× 4.3° mosaic images covering the 8100 deg2 of sky with  δ≤−30° and | b | > 10°  . The catalogue contains 210 412 radio sources to a limiting peak brightness of 6 mJy beam−1 at  δ≤−50°  and 10 mJy beam−1 at  δ > −50°  . We describe the updates and improvements made to the SUMSS cataloguing process.  相似文献

Online Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) material is often used to obtain information on newly discovered variable stars for older epochs (e.g. Nova progenitors, flare stars, etc.). We present here the results of an investigation of photometry on online DSS material in small fields calibrated by CCD sequences. We compared different source extraction mechanisms and found that even down near to the sensitivity limit, despite the H-compression used for the online material, photometry with an accuracy better than 0.1 mag rms is possible on DSS-II. Our investigation shows that the accuracy depends strongly on the source extraction method. The SuperCOSMOS scans, although retrieved with a higher spatial resolution, do not give us better results. The methods and parameters presented here allow the user to obtain good plate photometry in small fields down to the Schmidt plate survey limits with a few bright CCD calibrators, which may be calibrated with amateur-size telescopes. Especially for the events mentioned above, new field photometry for calibration purposes mostly exists, but the progenitors were not measured photometrically before. Also, the follow-up whether stellar concentrations are newly detected clusters or similar work may be done without using mid-size telescopes. The calibration presented here is a 'local' one for small fields. We show that the method presented here gives higher accuracies than 'global' calibrations of surveys (e.g. Guide Star Catalogue-II (GSC-II), SuperCOSMOS and the US Naval Observatory Astrometry Catalog B).  相似文献

Results of observations of the long-period variable Y Ori are presented. The photoelectric observations in UBVR were made at the 60-cm telescope of the high-altitude Maydanak station of the Tashkent Astronomical Institute during the autumn of 1989. The UBVR lightcurves as well as the variations in the color indices U-B, B-V, and V-R are presented. The photographic observations were made at the 40 Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Observatory and at the 70-cm Maksutov telescope of the Abastumani Observatory. A nebulosity was discovered around Y Ori in red light near the brightness maximum. Such a formation is observed for the first time, not only for Y Ori but also for long-period variables in general. We have carried out single and multisite photometry of the three β Cephei stars β and 15 CMa as well as KZ Mus. For the two stars in CMa, we obtained 270 h of measurement in the Strömgren uvy and Johnson V filters, while 150 h of time-resolved Strömgren uvy photometry was acquired for KZ Mus. All three stars are multiperiodic variables, with three (β CMa) and four (15 CMa, KZ Mus) independent pulsation modes. Two of the mode frequencies of 15 CMa are new discoveries and one of the known modes showed amplitude variations over the last 33 yr. Taken together, this fully explains the diverse behaviour of the star reported in the literature.
Mode identification by means of the amplitude ratios in the different passbands suggests one radial mode for each star. In addition, β CMa has a dominant  ℓ= 2  mode while its third mode is non-radial with unknown ℓ. The non-radial modes of 15 CMa, which are  ℓ≤ 3  , form an almost equally split triplet that, if physical, would imply that we see the star under an inclination angle larger than 55°. The strongest non-radial mode of KZ Mus is  ℓ= 2  , followed by the radial mode and a dipole mode. Its weakest known mode is non-radial with unknown ℓ, confirming previous mode identifications for the pulsations of the star.
The phased light curve for the strongest mode of 15 CMa has a descending branch steeper than the rising branch. A stillstand phenomenon during the rise to maximum light is indicated. Given the low photometric amplitude of this non-radial mode this is at first sight surprising, but it can be explained by the aspect angle of the mode.  相似文献
