Cihai and Cinan are Permian magnetite deposits related to mafic-ultramafic intrusions in the Beishan region, Xinjiang, NW China. The Cihai mafic intrusion is dominantly composed of dolerite, gabbro and fine-grained massive magnetite ore, while gabbro, pyrrhotite + pyrite-bearing clinopyroxenite and magnetite ore comprise the major units in Cinan. Clinopyroxene occurs in both deposits as 0.1–2 mm in diameter subhedral to anhedral grains in dolerite, gabbro and clinopyroxenite. High FeO contents (11.7–28.9 wt%), low SiO2 (43.6–54.3 wt%) and Al2O3 contents (0.15–6.08 wt%), and low total REE and trace element contents of clinopyroxene in the Cinan clinopyroxenite imply crystallization early, at high pressure. This clinopyroxene is FeO-rich and Si and Ti-poor, consistent with the clinopyroxene component of large-scale Cu-Ni sulfide deposits in the Eastern Tianshan and Panxi ares, as well as Tarim mafic intrusion and basalt, implying the Cinan mafic intrusion and sulfide is related to tectonic activity in the Tarim LIP. The similar mineral chemistry of clinopyroxene, apatite and magnetite in the Cihai and Cinan gabbros (e.g., depleted LREE, negative Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta anomalies in clinopyroxene, lack of Eu anomaly in apatite and similarity of oxygen fugacity as indicated by V in magnetite), indicate similar parental magmatic characteristics. Mineral compositions suggest a crystallization sequence of clinopyroxenite/with a small amount of sulfide – gabbro – magnetite ore in the Cinan deposit, and magnetite ore – gabbro – dolerite in Cihai. The basaltic magma was emplaced at depth, with magnetite segregation (and formation of the Cinan magnetite ores) occurring in relatively low fO2 conditions, after clinopyroxenite and gabbro fractional crystallization. The evolved Fe-rich basaltic magma rapidly rose to intermediate or shallow depths, forming an immiscible Fe-Ti oxide magma as fO2 increased and leaving a Fe-poor residual magma in the chamber. The residual magmas was emplaced at different levels in the crust, forming the Cihai gabbro and dolerite, respectively. Finally, the immiscible Fe-Ti oxide magma was emplaced into the earlier formed dolerite because of late magma pulse uplift, resulting in a distinct boundary between the magnetite ores and dolerite.

The Hongge magmatic Fe-Ti-V oxide deposit in the Panxi region, SW China, is hosted in a layered mafic–ultramafic intrusion. This 2.7-km-thick, lopolith-like intrusion consists of the lower, middle, and upper zones, which are composed of olivine clinopyroxenite, clinopyroxenite, and gabbro, respectively. Abundant Fe-Ti oxide layers mainly occur in the middle zone and the lower part of the upper zone. Fe-Ti oxides include Cr-rich and Cr-poor titanomagnetite and granular ilmenite. Cr-rich titanomagnetite is commonly disseminated in the olivine clinopyroxenite of the lower parts of the lower and middle zones and contains 1.89 to 14.9 wt% Cr2O3 and 3.20 to 16.2 wt% TiO2, whereas Cr-poor titanomagnetite typically occurs as net-textured and massive ores in the upper middle and upper zones and contains much lower Cr2O3 (<0.4 wt%) but more variable TiO2 (0.11 to 18.2 wt%). Disseminated Cr-rich titanomagnetite in the ultramafic rocks is commonly enclosed in either olivine or clinopyroxene, whereas Cr-poor titanomangetite of the net-textured and massive ores is mainly interstitial to clinopyroxene and plagioclase. The lithology of the Hongge intrusion is consistent with multiple injections of magmas, the lower zone being derived from a single pulse of less differentiated ferrobasaltic magma and the middle and upper zones from multiple pulses of more differentiated magmas. Cr-rich titanomagnetite in the disseminated ores of the lower and middle zones is interpreted to represent an early crystallization phase whereas clusters of Cr-poor titanomagnetite, granular ilmenite, and apatite in the net-textured ores of the middle and upper zones are thought to have formed from an Fe-Ti-(P)-rich melt segregated from a differentiated ferrobasaltic magma as a result of liquid immiscibility. The dense Fe-Ti-(P)-rich melt percolated downward through the underlying silicate crystal mush to form net-textured and massive Fe-Ti oxide ores, whereas the coexisting Si-rich melt formed the overlying plagioclase-rich rocks in the intrusion.

The Potato River intrusion is a Keweenawan (1100 Ma) mafic plutonemplaced in Keweenawan volcanics and earlier Proterozoic metasedimentaryrocks along the southeastern flank of the Lake Superior syncline. It comprises the following lithostratigraphic zones: a thinto absent Border zone of altered olivine gabbro; a Lower zoneof olivine gabbro; a Picritic zone of picrite and troctolite;a Middle zone of olivine gabbro and leucogabbro; an Upper zoneof quartz leucogabbro and ferrogabbro; and a Roof zone of granophyricand granitic rocks. Fractional crystallization is evident fromcompositional changes in the rocks and cumulus minerals withstratigraphic height. Elements concentrated in the cumulus mineralsolivine and plagioclase (Mg, Fe2+, Al, Ca, Ni, Co, Cr, Sr) decreasewith height; elements concentrated in the trapped liquid (Na,K, La, Y, Zr, Nb, Rb, Ba) increase with height; and other elements(Ti, Fe3+, P, Ga, V, Sc, Cu, Zn) show complicated behavior relatedto the appearance of additional cumulus phases such as clinopyroxene,Fe-Ti oxides, and apatite. Lower zone rocks contain some sulfide, probably from sulfur derived from the country rock, and theUpper zone has sulfides probably precipitated from an immisciblesulfide liquid. The sulfide-bearing rocks have similaritiesto those of other intrusions, such as Bushveld, Stillwater, and Skaergaard. The picritic and troctolitic rocks of the Picritic zone indicatethat the intrusion was open to additional injections of maficmagma. Roof zone granophyric rocks are residual liquids intrudedalong the upper margin of the intrusion during regional tilting, but Roof zone granitic rocks are probably melted country rock.An attempt is made to estimate by reverse stratigraphic summationthe compositional path of the magma that solidified above thePicritic zone. The first compositions are highly aluminous, which suggests that the upper part of the intrusion has beenenriched in plagioclase by convection-aided crystal sorting.A complementary unit of mafic rocks is not exposed, but it couldbe present down dip. Some of the later compositions are similarto typical Keweenawan high-Al tholeiites. The magma did notundergo extreme iron enrichment, probably because of oxygenfugacity buffering.

The Late Permian Fe-Ti oxide ore-bearing Baima igneous complex (BIC) is one of three gabbro-granitoid complexes with the Emeishan large igneous province. Mineral compositions are determined for the BIC layered gabbro in order to constrain subsolidus and magma chamber processes. The averaged compositions of cumulus olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase within individual samples range from Fo65-76, Mg# = 75 to 82 and An49-64 but they are not correlative. The observed mineral compositions are consistent with those modeled using the pHMELTS program. Highly variable magnetite compositions are consistent with extensive subsolidus re-equilibration and exsolution. The occurrence of reversely-zoned granular olivine in Fe-Ti oxide ores is a manifestation of Mg transfer between Fe-Ti oxides and olivine at relatively high (<1150?°C) subsolidus temperatures. The primary oxide is inferred to be an aluminous titanomagnetite. Similar to other layered intrusions in the region, the gabbroic unit of the BIC displays Zr depletion which is consistent with loss of a residual liquid during magma differentiation. If the most Zr-rich syenites of the complex are taken into account, the Zr budgets between the combined gabbro-syenite and the basalts are similar. This indicates that the BIC most likely represents a closed system in terms of magma extraction.

Polymineralic aggregates composed of clinopyroxene, Fe-Ti oxide minerals, apatite and accessory K-feldspar, biotite, and amphibole are enclosed in cumulus plagioclase grains in the Middle Zone of the Skærgaard intrusion. The chemistry of the minerals in the aggregates, and the textural relations between the aggregates and the host plagioclase grains indicate that they represent inclusions of the contemporaneous melt of the Skærgaard intrusion. Through mass balance calculations a quantitative estimate of the melt composition for this level in the intrusion can be obtained, and this estimate confirms that the silica content in the Middle Zone melt was similar to, or possibly even lower than, the silica content in the initial Skærgaard melt, and relatively enriched in iron.

ABSTRACT

The Piqiang intrusion is one of the two important ma?c-ultrama?c layered intrusions that host giant Fe-Ti-V oxide deposits in the Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province, NW China. The intrusion mainly consists of gabbro, anorthosite and minor plagioclase-bearing clinopyroxenite in the marginal zone. Disseminated to massive Fe-Ti oxide ores occur as layers and lenses within the gabbro. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb results from both a gabbro from the Piqiang intrusion and a granite from the surrounding granitic dyke yield ages of ~270 Ma. Geochemically, the Piqiang silicate rocks are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), moderately depleted in high ?eld strength elements (HFSE), and have a limited range of Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic compositions. The similar mineralogy, mineral compositions, and trace element characteristics of the layered units suggest that all the rocks are co-magmatic. The parental magma is Fe-Ti-rich and is akin to the most primitive diabasic dyke which is associated with the Piqiang intrusion. Partial melting of the Tarim mantle plume with involvement of a subduction-metasomatized lithospheric mantle source best explains the geochemistry and petrogenesis of the parental magmas of the Piqiang intrusion. We propose that the lithospheric mantle source may have been metasomatized by subduction-related materials and the metasomatic enrichment of this source region which may be correlated with oceanic sediment recycling during southward subduction of the South Tianshan oceanic slab during the Early-Middle Paleozoic. Crystal settling and mechanical sorting is the predominant process responsible for the formation of the massive Fe-Ti oxide ores in the Piqiang intrusion. Central to ore formation is a combination of the protracted differentiation history of a Fe-Ti-enriched parental magma and the later addition of external H2O from the country rocks to the slowly cooling magma chamber.

The Panzhihua gabbroic layered intrusion is associated withthe 260 Ma Emeishan Large Igneous Province in SW China. Thissill-like body hosts a giant Fe–Ti–V oxide depositwith 1333 million ton ore reserves, which makes China a majorproducer of these metals. The intrusion has a Marginal zoneof fine-grained hornblende-bearing gabbro and olivine gabbro, followed upward by Lower, Middle, and Upper zones. The Lowerand Middle zones consist of layered melanogabbro and gabbrocomposed of cumulate clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and olivine. These zones also contain magnetite layers. The Upper zone consistschiefly of leucogabbro composed of plagioclase and clinopyroxenewith minor olivine. Most rocks in the body show variable-scalerhythmic modal layering in which dark minerals, primarily clinopyroxene, dominate in the lower parts of each layer, and lighter minerals, primarily plagioclase, dominate in the upper parts. The oxideores occur as layers and lenses within the gabbros and are concentratedin the lower parts of the intrusion. Ore textures and associatedmineral assemblages indicate that the ore bodies formed by verylate-stage crystallization of V-rich titanomagnetite from animmiscible oxide liquid in a fluid-rich environment. The rocksof the Panzhihua intrusion become more evolved in chemistryupward and follow a tholeiitic differentiation trend with enrichmentin Fe, Ti, and V. They are enriched in light rare earth elementsrelative to heavy rare earth elements, and exhibit positiveNb, Ta, and Ti anomalies and negative Zr and Hf anomalies. Thesilicate rocks and oxide ores of the Panzhihua intrusion formedfrom highly evolved Fe–Ti–V-rich ferrobasaltic orferropicritic magmas. The textures of the ores and the abundanceof minor hydrous phases indicate that addition of fluids fromupper crustal wall-rocks induced the separation of the immiscibleoxide melts from which the Fe–Ti–V oxide ore bodiesin the lower part of the intrusion crystallized. The Coldwell alkaline complex is a large (> 350 km2) gabbro and syenite intrusion on the north shore of Lake Superior. It was emplaced at 1108 Ma during early magmatic activity associated with the formation of the Mid-Continent Rift of North America. The eastern gabbro forms a partial ring dyke on the outer margin of the complex and consists of at least three discrete intrusions. The largest of these is the layered gabbro that comprises a 300 m thick fine- to medium-grained basal unit overlain by up to 1100 m of variably massive to layered gabbroic cumulates which vary from olivine gabbro to anorthosite. Several xenoliths of Archaean metamorphic rocks that range in size from 10's to 100's of meters are present in the central part of the intrusion. Within discrete horizons in the layered gabbro are many centimeter- to meter-scale, gabbroic xenoliths. The main cumulus minerals, in order of crystallization, are plagioclase, olivine and clinopyroxene ± Fe-Ti oxides. Biotite and Fe-Ti-oxide are the dominant intercumulus phases. Orthopyroxene occurs not as a cumulus phase but as peritectic overgrowths on cumulus olivine. A detailed petrographic and mineral chemical study of samples from two stratigraphically controlled traverses through the layered gabbro indicates that the stratigraphy cannot be correlated along the 33 km strike of the ring dyke. Mineral compositions show both normal and reversed fractionation trends. These patterns are interpreted to record at least three separate intrusions of magma into restricted dilatant zones within the ring dyke possibly associated with ongoing caldera collapse. Calculations of parental melt composition using mineral — melt equilibria show that even the most primitive gabbros crystallized from an evolved magma with mg# of 0.42-0.49. The presence of orthopyroxene overgrowths on cumulus olivine suggests rising silica activity in the melt during crystallization and implies a subalkaline parentage for the layered gabbro.

The Khopoli intrusion, exposed at the base of the Thakurvadi Formation of the Deccan Traps in the Western Ghats, India, is composed of olivine gabbro with 50–55 % modal olivine, 20–25 % plagioclase, 10–15 % clinopyroxene, 5–10 % low-Ca pyroxene, and <5 % Fe-Ti oxides. It represents a cumulate rock from which trapped interstitial liquid was almost completely expelled. The Khopoli olivine gabbros have high MgO (23.5–26.9 wt.%), Ni (733–883 ppm) and Cr (1,432–1,048 ppm), and low concentrations of incompatible elements including the rare earth elements (REE). The compositions of the most primitive cumulus olivine and clinopyroxene indicate that the parental magma of the Khopoli intrusion was an evolved basaltic melt (Mg# 49–58). Calculated parental melt compositions in equilibrium with clinopyroxene are moderately enriched in the light REE and show many similarities with Deccan tholeiitic basalts of the Bushe, Khandala and Thakurvadi Formations. Nd-Sr isotopic compositions of Khopoli olivine gabbros (εNdt?=??9.0 to ?12.7; 87Sr/86Sr?=?0.7088–0.7285) indicate crustal contamination. AFC modelling suggests that the Khopoli olivine gabbros were derived from a Thakurvadi or Khandala-like basaltic melt with variable degrees of crustal contamination. Unlike the commonly alkalic, pre- and post-volcanic intrusions known in the Deccan Traps, the Khopoli intrusion provides a window to the shallow subvolcanic architecture and magmatic processes associated with the main tholeiitic flood basalt sequence. Measured true density values of the Khopoli olivine gabbros are as high as 3.06 g/cm3, and such high-level olivine-rich intrusions in flood basalt provinces can also explain geophysical observations such as high gravity anomalies and high seismic velocity crustal horizons.

The Paleoproterozoic Kauhajärvi gabbro is one of several Fe-, Ti-, and P-rich mafic intrusions associated with granitoids in the Fennoscandian shield in western Finland. The gabbro is cut by the late-orogenic Lauhanvuori granite (ca.1870?Ma), whereas the surrounding area is composed of synorogenic, collision-related granitoids and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks (ca. 1890?Ma) belonging to the Mid Finland Granitoid Complex. The mafic intrusions were probably emplaced into a Svecofennian rift zone. They are characterized by a high phosphorus content; the common occurrence of ilmenite as separate grains; and the coeval crystallization of apatite, Fe-Ti oxides, and Fe-Mg silicates. The Kauhajärvi gabbro is composed of two geochemically and structurally distinct zones. The basal zone is composed of poorly-layered, fine- to medium-grained gabbro, which represents an early intrusion of tholeiitic magma, and has rather high concentrations of chromium, magnesium and silica. Typically, the concentrations of iron, titanium and phosphorus are low, except for the top that is enriched in apatite and ilmenite. During most of the crystal-liquid fractionation of the basal zone magma, low f O2 limited the crystallization of Fe-Ti-oxides. Instead, titanium became enriched in the uppermost layer of the basal zone. The main zone represents a later injection of more evolved tholeiitic magma and makes up 80 to 90%of the total intrusion volume. Peridotite is common, along with gabbro and gabbronorite, in the lower and middle parts of the main zone, and anorthosite is common near the top of the main zone. The Mg:Fe ratio in mafic minerals and vanadium concentrations in magnetite decrease upwards. The variation within the main zone can be explained by crystal-liquid fractionation of a single batch of a parental magma under conditions of relatively high f O2. Titanium is not progressively enriched. The ratio of titanium to iron (TiO2/Fe2O3 = 0.16 to 0.20; Fe total as Fe2O3) is constant in the main zone and normal for mafic intrusions. Titanium is sited in separate ilmenite grains and in lamella within ilmenomagnetite (Ti-bearing magnetite). The high phosphorus content in the main zone is interpreted to result in crystallization of ilmenite and ilmenomagnetite instead of Ti-rich magnetite under relatively high f O2 conditions. High concentrations of titanium, iron and phosphorus in rocks of the main zone can be explained by pre-emplacement crystal-melt fractionation in a deep magma reservoir and/or contamination of mantle-derived mafic magmas by granitic magmas from partial melting of crustal rocks. A low-grade Fe-Ti-P resource at Kauhajärvi consists of layers with as much as 20 wt. % combined ilmenite (usually 8 to 11 wt. %), apatite (1 to 8 wt. %) and magnetite (1 to 9 wt. %). Mineralized layers are of variable thickness (2?m to 30?m) and occur in variable host rocks (peridotite or gabbro). The Fe-Ti oxides are most abundant in peridotite and pyroxene- or olivine-rich gabbronorite within the main zone. The contact between mineralized rocks (4%TiO2) and non- or slightly-mineralized rocks is gradual. The deposit as a whole consists of three to five mineralized layers with maximum combined thickness of 70?m. Apatite is most abundant in the oxide-rich layers, but is locally also concentrated in anorthosite with low Fe-Ti oxide contents. The weight ratio of ilmenite to magnetite is 3:2. The ratio of total Ti-Fe-oxides to apatite averages 4.0, with the range of 1.5 to >15.

The Neoproterozoic Korab Kansi mafic-ultramafic intrusion is one of the largest (100 km2) intrusions in the Southern Eastern Desert of Egypt. The intrusion consists of Fe-Ti-bearing dunite layers, amphibole peridotites, pyroxenites, troctolites, olivine gabbros, gabbronorites, pyroxene gabbros and pyroxene-hornblende gabbros, and also hosts significant Fe-Ti deposits, mainly as titanomagnetite-ilmenite. These lithologies show rhythmic layers and intrusive contacts against the surrounding granites and ophiolitic-island arc assemblages. The wide ranges of olivine forsterite contents (Fo67.9-85.7), clinopyroxene Mg# (0.57–0.95), amphibole Mg# (0.47–0.88), and plagioclase compositions (An85.8-40.9) indicate the role of fractional crystallization in the evolution from ultramafic to mafic rock types. Clinopyroxene (Cpx) has high REE contents (2–30 times chondrite) with depleted LREE relative to HREE, like those crystallized from ferropicritic melts generated in an island-arc setting. Melts in equilibrium with Cpx also resemble ferropicrites crystallized from olivine-rich mantle melts. Cpx chemistry and its host rock compositions have affinities to tholeiitic and calc-alkaline magma types. Compositions of mafic-ultramafic rocks are depleted in HFSE (e.g. Nb, Ta, Zr, Th and U) relative to LILE (e.g. Li, Rb, Ba, Pb and Sr) due to the addition of subduction-related hydrous fluids (rich in LILE) to the mantle source, suggesting an island-arc setting. Fine-grained olivine gabbros may represent quenched melts approximating the primary magma compositions because they are typically similar in assemblage and chemistry as well as in whole-rock chemistry to ferropicrites. We suggest that the Korab Kansi intrusion crystallized at temperatures ranging from ~700 to 1100 °C from ferropicritic magma derived from melting of metasomatized mantle at <5 Kbar. These hydrous ferropicritic melts were generated in the deep mantle and evolved by fractional crystallization under high ƒO2 at relatively shallow depth. Fractionation formed calc-alkaline magmas during the maturation of an island arc system, reflecting the role of subduction-related fluids. The interaction of metasomatized lithosphere with upwelling asthenospheric melts produced the Fe and Ti-rich ferropicritic parental melts that are responsible for precipitating large quantities of Fe-Ti oxide layers in the Korab Kansi mafic-ultramafic intrusion. The other factors controlling these economic Fe-Ti deposits beside parental melts are high oxygen fugacity, water content and increasing degrees of mantle partial melting. The generation of Ti-rich melts and formation of Fe-Ti deposits in few layered intrusions in Egypt possibly reflect the Neoproterozoic mantle heterogeneity in the Nubian Shield. We suggest that Cryogenian-Tonian mafic intrusions in SE Egypt can be subdivided into Alaskan-type intrusions that are enriched in PGEs whereas Korab Kansi-type layered intrusions are enriched in Fe-Ti-V deposits.

The iron-rich ultramafic pegmatites comprise a suite of coarse-grainedrocks that form discordant bodies within the layered sequenceof the Bushveld Complex. These pegmatites, which are considerablymore abundant than is generally realized, provide evidence forthe differentiation of iron-rich residual melts. The pegmatitesare composed largely of iron-rich olivine and clinopyroxene, together with Ti-magnetite and ilmenite. Feldspar is characteristicallyabsent, but paradoxically the pegmatites preferentially replaceanorthositic cumulates. Two subgroups are recognized, olivine-clinopyroxenepegmatite and Fe-Ti oxides pegmatite. With increased stratigraphicheight the pegmatites become richer in Fe-Ti oxides. Thus, olivine-clinopyroxenepegmatite is prevalent in the Upper Critical and Lower MainZones, whereas Fe-Ti oxide pegmatite is restricted to the UpperMain and Upper Zones. Zoned pegmatite, with a core of Fe-Tioxide pegmatite, is transitional between the two subgroups. New whole-rock and electron microprobe analyses of olivine-clinopyroxenepegmatite from the Upper Critical and Lower Main Zones provideconvincing evidence that their composition is directly relatedto height. Cryptic compositional variations are analogous tothose displayed by the layered cumulates, but for a given heightthe pegmatites are always more evolved. Compositions of clinopyroxenein the pegmatites reflect a near-linear relationship with height, whereas cumulus pyroxenes display upward iron-enrichment trendscomplicated by replenishment and reaction with trapped intercumulusliquid. The olivine-clinopyroxene pegmatite formed by magmatic replacementof earlier-formed cumulates in response to infiltration of iron-richmelts. Suitably differentiated melts comprised intercumulusand residual liquids derived from thick anorthosite layers. The absence of feldspar, although not fully understood, is attributedto an immiscible relationship between dense, iron-rich meltsand light, silica-alkali-rich liquids. The latter infiltratedupward to be reincorporated into the resident magma. The iron-richmelts, however, drained down into the crystallizing cumulatepile. Channelling along early-formed fractures and joints wassignificant, locally resulting in huge pipe-like bodies of pegmatite. The iron-rich melts became increasingly differentiated withheight, partly in response to the fractional crystallizationof more evolved cumulates. The olivine-clinopyroxene pegmatitesare related to infiltration of Fe-Ti oxide-rich silicate melt, whereas Fe-Ti oxide pegmatite is ascribed to Fe-Ti oxide liquid,as originally argued by Bateman (1951). The Bushveld Complexfollowed the Fenner trend of almost uninterrupted iron enrichment.Evidence of pronounced iron enrichment is, however, manifestedin the discordant iron-rich ultramafic pegmatites several thousandsof metres below the height at which iron-rich cumulates areobserved.

Large layered intrusions are almost certainly periodically replenished during their protracted cooling and crystallization. The exact composition(s) of the replenishing magma(s) in the case of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, has been debated, mainly on the basis of major element composition and likely crystallization sequences. The intrusion is dominated by orthopyroxene and plagioclase, and so their Cr and Sr contents, and likely partition coefficient values, can be used to re-investigate the appropriateness of the various proposed parental magmas. One magma type, with about 12% MgO, 1000 ppm Cr and 180 ppm Sr, can explain the genesis of the entire Lower and Critical Zones. A number of other magma compositions proposed to produce the Critical Zone fail to match these trace-element constraints by being too poor in Cr. A fundamentally different magma type was added at the base of the Main Zone, but none of the proposed compositions is consistent with the trace-element requirements. Specifically, the Cr contents are higher than predicted from pyroxene compositions. A further geological constraint is demonstrated from a consideration of the Cr budget at this level. There is an abrupt decrease from about 0.4% to 0.1% Cr2O3 in orthopyroxene across this Critical Zone–Main Zone transition. No realistic proportions of mixing between the residual magma at the top of the Critical Zone and any proposed added magma composition can have produced a composition that could have crystallized these low-Cr orthopyroxenes. Instead, it is suggested that the resident magma from the Upper Critical Zone was expelled from the chamber, possibly as sills into the country rocks, during influx of a dense, differentiated magma. Near the level of the Pyroxenite Marker in the Main Zone, there is further addition of a ferrobasaltic magma, with 6% MgO, 111 ppm Cr and 350 ppm Sr, that is consistent with the geochemical requirements.

The Kap Edvard Holm Layered Series forms part of the East GreenlandTertiary Province, and was emplaced at shallow crustal level(at depths corresponding to a pressure of 1–2 kbar) duringcontinental break-up. It consists of two suites: a gabbro suitecomprising olivine and oxide gabbros, leucocratic olivine gabbrosand anorthosites, and a suite of wehrlites that formed fromthe intrusion of the gabbros during their solidification bya hydrous, high-MgO magma. Ion microprobe analyses of clinopyroxenereveal chemical contrasts between the parental melt of the wehrlitesuite and that of the gabbro suite. Thin sills (1–2 mthick) of the wehrlite suite, however, have clinopyroxene compositionssimilar to the gabbro suite, and were formed by interactionwith interstitial melts from the host layered gabbros. All evolvedmembers of the gabbro suite have elevated Nd, Zr and Sr concentrationsand Nd/Yb ratios, relative to the melt parental to the gabbrosuite. These characteristics are attributed to establishmentof a magma chamber at depths corresponding to a pressure of10 kbar, where melts evolved before injection into the low-pressuremagma chamber. Anorthosites of the gabbro suite are believedto have crystallized from such injections. The melts becamesupersaturated in plagioclase by the pressure release that followedtransportation to the low-pressure magma chamber after initialfractionation at 10 kbar. The most evolved gabbros formed bysubsequent fractionation within the low-pressure magma chamber. Our results indicate that high-pressure fractionation may beimportant in generating some of the lithological variationsin layered intrusions.

The Rogaland anorthosite province (S. Norway) contains numerous Fe-Ti oxide deposits, including the second most important ilmenite deposit in the world, the Tellnes deposit. The largest deposits are located in the Åna-Sira anorthosite massif. Others occur in the Håland-Helleren anorthosite massif, particularly along the deformed contact with the Egersund-Ogna massif, where they were previously considered formed by metasomatic processes. All deposits are now regarded as magmatic. The structure, mineralogy and geochemistry of 11 selected Fe-Ti deposits (Tellnes, Storgangen, Blåfjell, Laksedal, Kydlandsvatn, Kagnuden, Rødemyr, Hestnes, Eigerøy, Svånes, and Jerneld) are discussed in light of recent models proposed for the origin of Rogaland anorthosites and related rocks. Massif-type anorthosites result from the diapiric uprise of a plagioclase crystal mush which crystallized along a large PT interval. Except for Tellnes, which is related to a post-deformation dyke, the Fe-Ti deposits in anorthosite massifs have been deformed by this movement during and after their crystallization. The differentiation process of the jotunitic parental magma has built up cumulates in the Bjerkreim-Sokndal layered intrusion and liquids in the Tellnes dyke and other jotunitic intrusions. Ilmenite is a liquidus mineral immediately after plagioclase in the sequence of crystallization of these jotunites, its interstitial character in the rocks resulting from subsolidus recrystallization. Ilmenite can thus accumulate early in the evolution of jotunitic magmas. This feature, together with high contents in Cr, V, Mg and Ni, links the Jerneld, Blåfjell and Svånes deposits (type?1) to the early evolution of a jotunitic magma. In the Bjerkreim-Sokndal intrusion, magnetite can appear with ilmenite at the very beginning of the sequence of crystallization, but normally crystallizes after orthopyroxene and before clinopyroxene and apatite. The early appearance of magnetite is a characteristic feature of type 2 deposits (Tellnes, Storgangen, Kydlandsvatn, Rødemyr I) and suggests conditions similar to the early magnetite cumulates in the Bjerkreim-Sokndal intrusion. Evidence of layering further favours gravity-controlled sorting processes to concentrate the oxides. Large-scale subsolidus segregation of the oxides due to high-temperature deformation can further concentrate these minerals in silicate-absent meter-sized masses. Type 3 deposits (Rødemyr II, Kagnuden, Hestnes and Eigerøy) could be derived from the more evolved stages of differentiation, as indicated by high REE in apatite, high Ti and Zn in magnetite and relatively low Cr, V, Mg, Ni contents in both oxides. The Cr content in both oxide minerals is however higher than in the equivalent cumulates of the Bjerkreim-Sokndal intrusion. Although immiscibility as the mechanism of enrichment leading to silicate-absent oxide-apatite veins, as in Hestnes and Eigerøy, cannot be precluded, there is no direct evidence in the veins, nor has any structural or geochemical evidence of immiscibility ever been found in jotunite dykes and Fe-Ti-P-rich rocks. Further investigations on the influence of subsolidus exchange of elements between the two oxides are needed to improve the use of trace elements as differentiation indexes.
