Abstract

The fundamental of cartographic generalisation, the reduction of the amount of information which can be shown on a map in relation to reduction in scale, is examined. The Principle of Selection was first proposed by Töpfer in 1961, and is expressed as an equation relating the number of occurrences of a particular feature at source map scale and at derived map scale. The application of this to small-scale maps involves the introduction of two constants to represent symbolic exaggeration and symbolic form. Examples are given and illustrated. The paper is accompanied by explanatory notes by Dr D. H. Maling, who presented the paper on behalf of the authors at the XX International Geographical Congress London 1964, Section IX, Cartography.  相似文献

Abstract

Analysis of eye movements has been used for decades as a method for assessing the performance of visual stimuli. Until recently, this has mainly been applied to static and non-cartographic stimuli, but due to technological developments and reduced cost of equipment, interactive and cartographic applications are now feasible. suggest a new analysis method which applies Hägerstrand’s Space-Time-Cube (STC; ) to eye movement data. However, in an interactive three-dimensional STC, identifying and exploring key behaviours can be difficult. In order to ameliorate these difficulties, we propose a variation of the STC method, which uses two-dimensional projections of the STC onto the XT and YT planes. These two-dimensional projections are found to facilitate rapid identification of significant patterns in the data set. A prototype implementing this and other dynamical methods has been developed, and is presented with examples illustrating the benefits of working with two-dimensional projections of the STC.  相似文献

Lenticular visualisation methods are innovative advancements of modern presentation media in cartography. Owing to the mainly three-dimensional perception of people, this technique, in print as well as on screen, offers the possibility to introduce autostereoscopic, i.e. three-dimensional views in cartography. On the basis of true 3D, it has already found its way into the visualisation of relief relations. Moreover, it also opens perspectives for the more widespread products of thematic cartography (thematic maps). Multi-layered representation becomes possible on the basis of three-dimensional or sequentially differentiated depictions of spatial phenomena. Thus, several parameters or dimensions of cartographic content can be displayed at the same time. This essay discusses some potential applications of the lenticular foil technique for thematic cartography on a theoretical basis.  相似文献

Abstract

The progressive projection is by origin a manual cartographic technique, traditionally used by panoramic landscape painters; however, it is rarely encountered in digitally created three-dimensional (3D) maps. In this article, the advantages of this specific projection when designing 3D maps are presented, the processes involved in its manual construction, as well as the existing and potential digital implementation approaches, are reviewed. A new algorithmic solution is described, allowing for user-friendly interactive bending of a terrain model into a progressive view, with options to add a curved horizon, to vertically exaggerate the terrain, and to create a 360° strip panorama. The resulting software, Terrain Bender, is freely available for download.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper is an elaboration of the theses proposed in ‘Cartographic presentation of forms and degradation of the natural environment: sozological map on a scale of 1∶50?000’ (), where a sozological map of Poland was presented. The said map contained comprehensive cartographic information on the forms of environmental protection and degradation, made to a scale of 1∶50?000. The thematic scope of the map has already been modified twice: in 1997 and in 2005, with the ensuing changes presented in corresponding manuals: Sozological Map on a Scale of 1∶50?000, in an Analogue and Digital Form (Chief National Geodesist, 1997) and Technical Guidelines GIS-4. Sozological Map of Poland, Scale of 1∶50?000, in an Analogue and Digital Form (2005). Many years’ worth of experience gained since the launch of this cartographic system points out to the need for broadening the presented content and improving the map’s scale. Thus, attempts have been made at rescaling the map to 1∶10?000. Increasing the degree of detail is particularly necessary for presenting areas of intensive human activity. In this paper, the authors propose technical and graphical solutions for the 1∶10?000 scale.  相似文献

Abstract

The type of remotely sensed imagery best suited for natural hazards analysis is largely dependent on the geographic size and discreteness of the hazard in question. Some forms of imagery that are appropriate for analyses of spatially fixed, relatively fine‐scale hazards are inappropriate for use with geographically widespread and transient hazards, and vice versa. In this paper we utilize one study area, Waterton‐Glacier International Peace Park (Canada and USA), and two natural hazard types (snow avalanches and forest fires), to illustrate how these remote sensing principles can be presented to students of natural hazards. We also address the issue of familiarity, or lack thereof, that students have with different images from a variety of platforms.  相似文献

In satellite data analysis, one big advantage of analytical orbit integration, which cannot be overestimated, is missed in the numerical integration approach: spectral analysis or the lumped coefficient concept may be used not only to design efficient algorithms but overall for much better insight into the force-field determination problem. The lumped coefficient concept, considered from a practical point of view, consists of the separation of the observation equation matrix A=BT into the product of two matrices. The matrix T is a very sparse matrix separating into small block-diagonal matrices connecting the harmonic coefficients with the lumped coefficients. The lumped coefficients are nothing other than the amplitudes of trigonometric functions depending on three angular orbital variables; therefore, the matrix N=B T B will become for a sufficient length of a data set a diagonal dominant matrix, in the case of an unlimited data string length a strictly diagonal one. Using an analytical solution of high order, the non-linear observation equations for low–low SST range data can be transformed into a form to allow the application of the lumped concept. They are presented here for a second-order solution together with an outline of how to proceed with data analysis in the spectral domain in such a case. The dynamic model presented here provides not only a practical algorithm for the parameter determination but also a simple method for an investigation of some fundamental questions, such as the determination of the range of the subset of geopotential coefficients which can be properly determined by means of SST techniques or the definition of an optimal orbital configuration for particular SST missions. Numerical results have already been obtained and will be published elsewhere. Received: 15 January 1999 / Accepted: 30 November 1999  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to demonstrate results and considerations regarding the use of remote sensing big data for archaeological and Cultural Heritage management large scale applications. For this purpose, the Earth Engine© developed by Google© was exploited. Earth Engine© provides a robust and expandable cloud platform where several freely distributed remote sensing big data, such as Landsat, can be accessed, analysed and visualized. Two different applications are presented here as follows: the first one is based on the evaluation of multi-temporal Landsat series datasets for the detection of buried Neolithic tells (‘magoules’) in the area of Thessaly, in Greece using linear orthogonal equations. The second case exploits European scale multi-temporal DMSP-OLS Night-time Lights Time Series to visualize the impact of urban sprawl in the vicinity of UNESCO World Heritage sites and monuments. Both applications highlight the considerable opportunities that big data can offer to the fields of archaeology and Cultural Heritage, while the studies also demonstrate the great challenges that still are needed to be overcome in order to make the exploitation of big data process manageable and fruitful for future applications.  相似文献

Abstract

The Lack hitherto of studies of cycle-touring mapping in Britain is noted, and some basic attributes of cycle touring, including speed, daily distance, gradients and wind, are described. Essential and desirable qualities for a cycle-touring map are enumerated, including the need to depict all rural routes available to cyclists; it is concluded that the optimum scale is in the range 1:100 000–1:126 720, and that relief should by contours at an interval not greater than 30 metres. National mapping in the optimum scale range which were published after 1945 are then reviewed, and reasons suggested as to why none has been kept in print. The mapping available for cycle touring in Britain in 2001 is Ordnance Survey (OS) 1:50 000 Landranger series contains all the necessary information, it is too bulky to be suitable; and that most of the other maps published in the optimum scale range have inadequate relief information and all offer very limited geographical cover. The potential competition for the OS 1:50 000 from a national map series in the optimum scale range is acknowledged, and an outline specification for a 1:125 000 series is described, which seeks to minimize that competiton whilst providing all the necessary information for cycle touring.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Visibility determination is a key requirement in a wide range of national and urban applications, such as national security, landscape management, and urban design. Mobile LiDAR point clouds can depict the urban built environment with a high level of details and accuracy. However, few three-dimensional visibility approaches have been developed for the street-level point-cloud data. Accordingly, an approach based on mobile LiDAR point clouds has been developed to map the three-dimensional visibility at the street level. The method consists of five steps: voxelization of point-cloud data, construction of lines-of-sight, construction of sectors of sight, construction of three-dimensional visible space, and calculation of volume index. The proposed approach is able to automatically measure the volume of visible space and openness at any viewpoint along a street. This approach has been applied to three study areas. The results indicated that the proposed approach enables accurate simulation of visible space as well as high-resolution (1 m × 1 m) mapping of the visible volume index. The proposed approach can make a contribution to the improvement of urban planning and design processes that aim at developing more sustainable built environments.  相似文献

A method for filtering of geodetic observationwhich leaves the final result normally distributed, is presented. Furthermore, it is shown that if you sacrifice100.a% of all the observations you may be (1−β).100% sure that a gross error of the size Δ is rejected. Another and, may be intuitively, more appealing method is presented; the two methods are compared and it is shown why Method 1 should be preferred to Method 2 for geodetic purposes. Finally the two methods are demonstrated in some numerical examples.  相似文献

A relativistic delay model for Earth-based very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observation of sources at finite distances is derived. The model directly provides the VLBI delay in the scale of terrestrial time. The effect of the curved wave front is represented by using a pseudo source vector K = (R 1 + R 2)/(R 1 + R 2), and the variation of the baseline vector due to the difference of arrival time is taken into account up to the second-order by using Halley’s method. The precision of the new VLBI delay model is 1 ps for all radio sources above 100 km altitude from the Earth’s surface in Earth-based VLBI observation. Simple correction terms (parallax effect) are obtained, which can also adopt the consensus model (e.g. International Earth Rotation and Reference Frames Service conventions) to finite-distance radio source at R > 10 pc with the same precision. The new model may enable estimation of distance to the radio source directly with VLBI delay data.  相似文献

Abstract

An important problem faced by national mapping agencies is frequent map updates. An ideal solution is only updating the large-scale map with other smaller scale maps undergoing automatic updates. This process may involve a series of operators, among which selective omission has received much attention. This study focuses on selective omission in a road network, and the use of an artificial neural network (i.e. a back propagation neural network, BPNN). The use of another type of artificial neural network (i.e. a self-organizing map, SOM) is investigated as a comparison. The use of both neural networks for selective omission is tested on a real-life road network. The use of a BPNN for practical application road updating is also tested. The results of selective omission are evaluated by overall accuracy. It is found that (1) the use of a BPNN can adaptively determine which and how many roads are to be retained at a specific scale, with an overall accuracy above 80%; (2) it may be hard to determine which and how many roads should be retained at a specific scale using an SOM. Therefore, the BPNN is more effective for selective omission in road updating.  相似文献

Abstract

An assessment is made of the accuracy of the map and written survey, which is essentially a list of land-holders and the areas held by each, and of their mutual consistency. The geometry of the map is compared quantitatively with that of the first edition (1852) Ordnance Survey 6-inch (1 : 10 560) map. The Saxton map is found to have a scale of 1 : 5140, leading to the conclusion that the perch used in the scale bar represents 71/9 yards or thereabouts. The areas quoted in the written survey are consistent with acres based on this value. The positional accuracy of points on the map is found to be ~20 m, and areas of typical plots determined from the map are uncertain by between about 4 and 12%. The relationship between these two facts can be understood through a detailed study of the statistics of the errors in separations of points on the map. The written survey is found to omit a substantial number of plots of land from its listings. The map thus appears to be more reliable overall than the written survey.  相似文献

Abstract

The Stereographic Projection, owing to the ease and accuracy with which it can be drawn on a small scale, offers natural attractiveness for the treatment of spherical geometry upon a plane surface. It would therefore be rash for a present-day writer to claim as novel what may well be an infringement of patent rights morally belonging to Hipparchus, who possibly knew most of what is worth knowing about the matter 2,000 years ago. However, since a fairly extensive delving into writings upon the subject has not brought to light anything quite on the lines here put forward, it may be worth while to systematize in this paper some processes which the present writer has found practically useful for some time past.  相似文献

Abstract

Field work for the 1/1,250 scale re-survey of Great Britain was fully described in an article by Brigadier R. P.Wheeler in the April, 1948, issue of this Review (ix, 68, 234–247). The object of this article is to outline the method’ of reproduction of these plans and of the resultant 1/2,500 scale plans of urban areas. The 1/2,500 series covering rural areas is a separate problem, one of revision rather than re-survey. Experiments are in hand now to find out the best ways to provide field material and produce the final plans on National Grid sheet lines. The 1/1,250 scale series will contain about forty thousand plans and the 1/2,500 series of the same areas about nine thousand. It is therefore important that production methods should be straightforward and maintain an economical balance between the use of men and machines.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One of the essential steps for satellite albedo validation is upscaling in situ measurements to corresponding pixel scale over relatively heterogeneous land surfaces. Although the multi-scale validation strategy is applicable for heterogeneous surfaces, the calibration of the high-resolution imagery during upscaling process is never perfect, and thus the upscaling results suffer from errors. The regression-kriging (RK) technique can compensate the calibration part by applying kriging to upscale residuals and produce more accurate upscaling results. In this paper, in situ measurements and high spatial resolution albedo imagery combined with RK technique was proposed. This method is illustrated by upscaling surface albedo from in situ measurements scale to the coarse pixel scale in the core experimental area of HiWATER, where 17 WSN nodes were deployed at heterogeneous area. The upscaling results of this method were compared with the upscaling results from multi-scale strategy. The results show that the upscaling method based on in situ measurements and high-resolution imagery combined with RK technique can capture the spatial characteristics of surface albedo better. Further, an attempt was made to expand this method in time series. Finally, a preliminary validation of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer albedo product was performed as the tentative application.  相似文献

Abstract

In text-books on surveying the rangefinder is usually dismissed in one sentence, which merely remarks on its inaccuracies and places in the category of scientific curios an instrument which should be most valuable to the plane-tabler in certain types of country. It is to combat this effect and to help topographers in their arduous work that these notes have been written. They are written from experience gained on topographical survey, on a scale of 1/125,000, in a tropical dependency where reduction of cost is of primary importance.  相似文献

Abstract

The Survey in which the following methods were employed was for a final map on a scale of 1/500,000, with contours at a 500-foot Vertical Interval. In order to make use of any available information shown on existing maps, the scale used in different areas in the field was that of existing maps. These scales were 1,000 roods to 1 inch (1 rood = 12.396 English feet), 840 roods to 1 inch (1/125,000), and 1,680 roods to 1 inch (1/250,000).  相似文献

Scree Representation on Topographic Maps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract

<title/>

Scree patterns are an important element of mountain maps in Swiss style. The size and density of scree dots vary with the exposition towards a source of illumination, which makes the dots extremely labour intensive to map without specialized algorithms. This paper identifies design principles for the symbolisation of scree fields on mountain slopes and presents a digital method for the quick placement of dot symbols requiring only minimal interventions by a cartographer. When digitally produced scree is combined with a shaded relief and a rock drawing, the terrain appears as a continuous three-dimensional surface to the reader. The described method is implemented in Scree Painter, a specialized free open-source software application. Scree patterns produced with Scree Painter match the quality standards of manually generated scree representations.  相似文献
