A remote sensing and Geographic Information System-based study has been carried out for landslide susceptibility zonation in the Chamoli region, part of Garhwal Himalayas. Logistic regression has been applied to correlate the presence of landslides with independent physical factors including slope, aspect, relative relief, land use/cover, lithology, lineament, and drainage density. Coefficients of the categories of each factor have been obtained and used to assess the landslide probability value to ultimately categorize the area into various landslide susceptibility zones; very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. The results show that 71.13% of observed landslides fall in 21.96% of predicted very high and high susceptibility zone, which in fact should be the case. Furthermore, lineament first buffer category (0–500 m) and the east and south aspects are the most influential in causing landslides in the region.

Garhwal Himalayas are seismically very active and simultaneously suffering from landslide hazards. Landslides are one of the most frequent natural hazards in Himalayas causing damages worth more than one billion US$ and around 200 deaths every year. Thus, it is of paramount importance to identify the landslide causative factors to study them carefully and rank them as per their influence on the occurrence of landslides. The difference image of GIS-derived landslide susceptibility zonation maps prepared for pre- and post-Chamoli earthquake shows the effect of seismic shaking on the occurrence of landslides in the Garhwal Himalaya. An attempt has been made to incorporate seismic shaking parameters in terms of peak ground acceleration with other static landslide causative factors to produce landslide susceptibility zonation map in geographic information system environment. In this paper, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis has been carried out to calculate peak ground acceleration values at different time periods for estimating seismic shaking conditions in the study area. Further, these values are used as one of the causative factors of landslides in the study area and it is observed that it refines the preparation of landslide susceptibility zonation map in seismically active areas like Garhwal Himalayas.

For assessing landslide susceptibility, the spatial distribution of landslides in the field is essential. The landslide inventory map is prepared on the basis of historical information of individual landslide events from different sources such as previously published reports, satellite imageries, aerial photographs and interview with local inhabitants. Then, the distribution of landslides in the study area is verified with field surveys. However, the selection of contributing factors for modelling landslide susceptibility is an inhibit task. The previous studies show that the factors are chosen as per availability of data. This paper documents the landslide susceptibility mapping in the Garuwa sub-basin, East Nepal using frequency ratio method. Nine different contributing factors are considered: slope aspect, slope angle, slope shape, relative relief, geology, distance from faults, land use, distance from drainage and annual rainfall. To analyse the effect of contributing factors, the landslide susceptibility index maps are generated four times using (a) topographical factors and geological factors, (b) topographical factors, geological factors and land use, (c) topographical factors, geological factors, land use and drainage and (d) all nine causative factors. By comparing with the pre-existing landslides, the fourth case (considering all nine causative factors) yields the best success rate accuracy, i.e. 81.19 %, which is then used to produce the final landslide susceptibility zonation map. Then, the final landslide susceptibility map is validated through chi-square test. The standard chi-square value with 3 degrees of freedom at the 0.001 significance level is 16.3, whereas the calculated chi-square value is 7,125.79. Since the calculated chi-square value is greater than the standard chi-square value, it can be concluded that the landslide susceptibility map is considered as statistically significant. Moreover, the results show that the predicted susceptibility levels are found to be in good agreement with the past landslide occurrences.

Landslides are one of the most widespread natural hazards in high mountain terrains such as the Himalayas, which are one of the youngest tectonically and seismically active mountain ranges in the world. The crustal movements along the longitudinal thrusts and transverse faults give rise to earthquakes and in turn initiate landslides in the region. In fact, in addition to various static factors causing landslides, earthquakes are one of the major causes of landslides. It is thus imperative to incorporate seismic factor also while carrying out landslide susceptibility zonation map preparation in a seismically active areas like Garhwal Himalayas. In this paper, a study on the effect of earthquakes on landslide susceptibility zonation has been demonstrated by taking Chamoli earthquake as an example.

Identification of landslides and production of landslide susceptibility maps are crucial steps that can help planners, local administrations, and decision makers in disaster planning. Accuracy of the landslide susceptibility maps is important for reducing the losses of life and property. Models used for landslide susceptibility mapping require a combination of various factors describing features of the terrain and meteorological conditions. Many algorithms have been developed and applied in the literature to increase the accuracy of landslide susceptibility maps. In recent years, geographic information system-based multi-criteria decision analyses (MCDA) and support vector regression (SVR) have been successfully applied in the production of landslide susceptibility maps. In this study, the MCDA and SVR methods were employed to assess the shallow landslide susceptibility of Trabzon province (NE Turkey) using lithology, slope, land cover, aspect, topographic wetness index, drainage density, slope length, elevation, and distance to road as input data. Performances of the methods were compared with that of widely used logistic regression model using ROC and success rate curves. Results showed that the MCDA and SVR outperformed the conventional logistic regression method in the mapping of shallow landslides. Therefore, multi-criteria decision method and support vector regression were employed to determine potential landslide zones in the study area.

Majority of landslides in the Indian sub-continent are triggered by rainfall. Several attempts in the global scenario have been made to establish rainfall thresholds in terms of intensity-duration and antecedent rainfall models on global, regional and local scales for the occurrence of landslides. However, in the context of the Indian Himalayas, the rainfall thresholds for landslide occurrences are not yet understood fully. Neither on regional scale nor on local scale, establishing such rainfall thresholds for landslide occurrences in Indian Himalayas has yet been attempted. This paper presents an attempt towards deriving local rainfall thresholds for landslides based on daily rainfall data in and around Chamoli-Joshimath region of the Garhwal Himalayas, India. Around 128 landslides taken place in last 4 years from 2009 to 2012 have been studied to derive rainfall thresholds. Out of 128 landslides, however, rainfall events pertaining to 81 landslides were analysed to yield an empirical intensity–duration threshold for landslide occurrences. The rainfall threshold relationship fitted to the lower boundary of the landslide triggering rainfall events is I?=?1.82 D ?0.23 (I?=?rainfall intensity in millimeters per hour and D?=?duration in hours). It is revealed that for rainfall events of shorter duration (≤24 h) with a rainfall intensity of 0.87 mm/h, the risk of landslide occurrence in this part of the terrain is expected to be high. Also, the role of antecedent rainfall in causing landslides was analysed by considering daily rainfall at failure and different period cumulative rainfall prior to failure considering all 128 landslides. It is observed that a minimum 10-day antecedent rainfall of 55 mm and a 20-day antecedent rainfall of 185 mm are required for the initiation of landslides in this area. These rainfall thresholds presented in this paper may be improved with the hourly rainfall data vis-à-vis landslide occurrences and also data of later years. However, these thresholds may be used in landslide warning systems for this particular region of the Garhwal Himalayas to guide the traffic and provide safety to the tourists travelling along this pilgrim route during monsoon seasons.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and characterize recent landslide events in the Larji–Kullu Tectonic Window (LKTW), and to establish a relationship between the tectonic and lithologic characters of the terrain and the landslides activity. Using multispectral satellite image analysis with selected field investigation, a landslide occurrence database has been generated for the period between 1984 and 2015. To decipher the accelerated occurrences of landslides in the region, an integrated study is undertaken in the Kullu (also known as Kulu) valley of Beas River basin within the LKTW complex, to analyze the litho-structural and terrain slope interactions using morpho-tectonic parameters such as Topographic/Bedding Plane Interaction Angle (TOBIA) index, terrain surface roughness index and lithological competency analysis. A prominent clustering of landslides is observed in the north of Sainj River, contained within the tectonic window. Major sites of landslides are found to be located in the intensely fractured Manikaran Quartzite occurring within the core of the LKTW. The landslides are mostly associated with southern and southwestern-facing slopes and activations are pronounced in the ‘Orthoclinal’ slope class with gradient of 37°–48°. Thematic maps, e.g., geological, structural, geomorphological, slope and slope-aspect maps are generated and considered together to understand the morpho-tectonic scenario of the tectonic window. Observations from the above-stated thematic maps along with the occurrences of moderate magnitude earthquake epicenters helped to infer neotectonic movements along the Sainj River fault. Tectonic upliftment of the northern bank of the Sainj River along with increased precipitation through decades has resulted in recurrent landslides within the LKTW.

A landslide susceptibility assessment for İzmir city (Western Turkey), which is the third biggest city of Turkey, was performed by a logistic regression method. A database of landslide characteristics was prepared using detailed field surveys. The major landslides in the study area are generally observed in the field, dominated by weathered volcanics, and 39.63% of the total landslide area is in this unit. The parameters of lithology, slope gradient, slope aspect, distance to drainage, distance to roads and distance to fault lines were used as variables in the logistic regression analysis. The effect of each parameter on landslide occurrence was assessed from the corresponding coefficients that appear in the logistic regression function. On the basis of the obtained coefficients, lithology plays the most important role in determining landslide occurrence and distribution. Slope gradient has a more significant effect than the other geomorphological parameters, such as slope aspect and distance to drainage. Using a predicted map of probability, the study area was classified into five categories of landslide susceptibility: very low, low, moderate, high and very high. Whereas 49.65% of the total study area has very low susceptibility, very high susceptibility zones make up 11.69% of the area.

Landslide susceptibility mapping is among the useful tools applied in disaster management and planning development activities in mountainous areas. The susceptibility maps prepared in this research provide valuable information for landslide hazard management in Lashgarak region of Tehran. This study was conducted to, first, prepare landslide susceptibility maps for Lashgarak region and evaluate landslide effect on mainlines and, second, to analyze the main factors affecting landslide hazard increase in the study area in order to propose efficient strategies for landslide hazard mitigation. A GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis model (fuzzy logic) is used in the present work for scientific evaluation of landslide susceptible areas in Lashgarak region. To this end, ArcGIS, PCIGeomatica, and IDIRISI software packages were used. Eight information layers were selected for information analysis: ground strength class, slope angle, terrain roughness, normalized difference moisture index, normalized difference vegetation index, distance from fault, distance from the river, and distance from the road. Next, eight different scenarios were created to determine landslide susceptibility of the study area using different operators (intersection (AND), union (OR), algebraic sum (SUM), multiplication (PRODUCT), and different fuzzy gamma values) of fuzzy overlay approach. After that, the performance of various fuzzy operators in landslide susceptibility mapping was empirically compared. The results revealed the excellent consistency of landslide susceptibility map prepared using the fuzzy union (OR) operator with landslide distribution map in the study area. Eventually, the accuracy of landslide susceptibility map prepared using the fuzzy union (OR) operator was evaluated using the frequency ratio diagram. The results showed that frequency values of the landslides gradually increase from “low susceptibility” to high “susceptibility” as 88.34% of the landslides are categorized into two “high” and “very high” susceptibility classes, implying the satisfactory consistency between the landslide susceptibility map prepared using fuzzy union (OR) operator and landslide distribution map.

Landslides the most common geo-hazard in hilly terrain are short lived phenomena but cause extraordinary landscape changes and destruction of life and property. The frequency and intensity of landslides occurrences along NH-21 during the rainy season not only disrupts traffic movement but also misbalance the agro-economic and developmental activities of the region frittering away thousand crores of rupees from the exchequer. An assessment of landslide susceptibility is, therefore, a prerequisite for sustainable development of the region. The present study deals with the preparation of macro-zonation maps of landslide susceptibility in an area of about 100 sq km on 1:50,000 scale across Garamaura-Swarghat section of National Highway-21. The map has been prepared by superimposing the terrain evaluation maps in a particular zone such as lithological map, structural map, slope morphometry map, relative relief map, land use and land cover map and hydrological condition map using landslide susceptibility evaluation factor rating scheme and calculating the total estimated susceptibility as per the guidelines of IS: 14496 (Part-2) 1998). Numerical weightages are assigned to the prime causative factors of slope instability such as lithology, structure, slope morphometery, relative relief, land use and groundwater conditions as per the scheme approved by Bureau of Indian Standard for the purpose of landslide susceptibility zonation. The area depicts zones of different instability. The identified susceptibility zones compared with landslide intensity in the area show some congruence with the weightages of the inputs. The incongruence in intensity and frequency of landslide occurrences and the inferred susceptibility zones of BIS scheme allow other geotechnical considerations and causative factors to be incorporated for the landslide susceptibility zonation.

Sliding mass of landslides highly endangered the area along travel path, especially landslides with long travel distance. It is necessary to develop an effective prediction model for preliminarily evaluating landslide travel distance so as to improve disaster prevention and relocation. This paper collected 54 landslides with 347–4,170 m travel distance triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake to discuss the effectiveness of various influential factors on landslide travel distance and obtained an empirical model for its prediction. The results revealed that rock type, sliding source volume, and slope transition angle were the predominant factors on landslide travel distance. The validity of proposed model was verified by the satisfactory agreement between observations and predictions. Therefore, this model might be practically applicable in Wenchuan earthquake area and other similar geomorphological and geological regions.

This article presents a multidisciplinary approach to landslide susceptibility mapping by means of logistic regression, artificial neural network, and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. The methodology applied in ranking slope instability developed through statistical models (conditional analysis and logistic regression), and neural network application, in order to better understand the relationship between the geological/geomorphological landforms and processes and landslide occurrence, and to increase the performance of landslide susceptibility models. The proposed experimental study concerns with a wide research project, promoted by the Tuscany Region Administration and APAT-Italian Geological Survey, aimed at defining the landslide hazard in the area of the Sheet 250 “Castelnuovo di Garfagnana” (1:50,000 scale). The study area is located in the middle part of the Serchio River basin and is characterized by high landslide susceptibility due to its geological, geomorphological, and climatic features, among the most severe in Italy. Terrain susceptibility to slope failure has been approached by means of indirect-quantitative statistical methods and neural network software application. Experimental results from different methods and the potentials and pitfalls of this methodological approach have been presented and discussed. Applying multivariate statistical analyses made it possible a better understanding of the phenomena and quantification of the relationship between the instability factors and landslide occurrence. In particular, the application of a multilayer neural network, equipped for supervised learning and error control, has improved the performance of the model. Finally, a first attempt to evaluate the classification efficiency of the multivariate models has been performed by means of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analysis approach.

In this study, we present a landslide susceptibility assessment carried out after the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. For the Zhouqu segment in the Bailongjiang basin in north-western China landslide susceptibility was computed by a logistic regression method. This region has been experiencing landslides for a long time, and numerous additional slope failures were triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. The data used for this study consists of slope failures attributed to the 2008 earthquake, the 878 post Wenchuan earthquake landslides and collapses inventory build up by combination the field investigation, monoscopic manual interpretation, image classification and texture analysis using SPOT 5 and ALOS remote-sensing image data. All data derived from remote sensing images are validated during field investigations. The landslide pre-disposing factor database was constructed. A digital elevation model (DEM) with a 30 × 30 m resolution, orthophotos, geological and land-use maps and information on peak ground acceleration data from the 2008 earthquake is used. The statistical analysis of the relation between Wencuan earthquake-triggered landslides and pre-disposing factors show the great influence of lithological and topographical conditions for earthquake-triggered slope failures. The quality of susceptibility mapping was validated by splitting the study area into a training and validation set. The prediction capability analysis showed that the landslide susceptibility map could be used for land planning as well as emergency planning by local authorities in this region.
