One of IUGS‘s past Secretary-Generals,the Dutchman Simon van der Heide (SvdH)is still in good physical shape and enjoys an excellent memory. I visited him on 17 November 2003 and on January 5th 2004 in his nice house in the outskirts of the city of Haarlem, the Netherlands. William Watt Hutchison, ＂Hutch＂ to his many friends around the world, was a Scots-born Canadian geologist who served Canada and the IUGS in myriad dynamic and creative ways. Most notably, he served as the IUGS Secretary General （1976-1980） at a pivotal time in its history, and as IUGS President （1984-1987）. It has been a tradition to organize very successful UNESCO Postgraduate Courses on Geochemical Prospecting Methods in the former Czechoslovakia from mid 70‘s. The first certificated course-GEOCHIM PRAHA UNESCO 1975 was launched on September 5, 1975 and lasted till October 25,1975. Since that time this course has been organized biannually by the Czech Geological Survey in Prague together with the Dionyz SEtúr Geological Survey in Bratislava and sponsored by the Division of Earth Sciences (UNESCO/Paris) and the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry (IAGS). Introduction A workshop and field trip of the International Geoscience Programme （IGCP） project 499 entitled Devonian Land-Sea Interaction： Evolution of Ecosystems and Climate （DEVEC） was organized between April 23rd and 30th in Tripoli, Libya. A one day symposium in Tripoli was followed by a field trip to the Awaynat Wanin Area of the Southern Ghadamis Basin, west of Libya.
